First up, hewell News.

The Hewell Service Departmentprovided 960 massages in May to
the DC, maryland, virginia area,bringing our total sessions for
the year to 4,583.
Hewell Executive Director, calCates, presented a keynote
speech at the National Hospiceand Palliative Care Organization
virtual convention in Apriltitled Snuggling Up to your
Mortality for Clinical Effect.

Dr Ann Blair-Kennedy from theUniversity of South Carolina and

Homecoming is September 20ththrough 21st.
There are four classesavailable on Friday, the 20th

two in the morning and two inthe afternoon.
Each class is worth four CEsfor a possible total of eight
credits.
Last month I told you about thetwo classes available Friday
morning one for pregnancy andone about lymphatics and today
I'm going to tell you about theclasses for Friday afternoon.
The first class is the ethicsof solidarity seeing yourself
and others to provide the bestpossible care.
Carrie Jordan, healwell'soperations director and chief,

whack-a-mole with Cal Cates, ourexecutive director and chief of
Worms, will present a coursethat will help you explore your
own mind, especially those partswe all wish didn't exist the
place where bias lives.
You'll learn about theneurobiology behind implicit
bias and why it's important tomove from the idea of cultural
competency to practicingcultural humility.
Carrie and Cal will also helpyou understand specific issues

about ethical caring for LGBTQIAplus community members.
You'll engage with currentevents and participate in small
group exercises and large groupdiscussions.
The second afternoon class isIntegrating Fossil Research into
Clinical Practice with KathyRyan.
Kathy has attended theInternational Fossil Research
Congress since it started in2007.
This class will talk aboutcurrent fossil research, science

and evidence informed clinicalconsiderations.
Kathy will help you understandhow to take fascial research and
apply it to your practice.
You'll learn fascial'sfunctional role, consequences of
fascial injury or dysfunctionand how our hands-on work works.
Research serves its purposebest when it's put into action.

Up next, state and national newsOhio has joined the Interstate
Compact which would allowmassage therapist licensing in
one state to follow thetherapist to other participating
states.
The compact needs seven statesto join before it can begin to
hammer out the rules.
Nevada has also accepted thecompact and New York, kentucky,

nebraska and Alabama areconsidering it.
Georgia was considering it buthas run into some trouble.

Delaware has introduced a Housebill that would increase
massage therapy educationrequirements from 500 to 265.
Tennessee has passed a billincreasing massage therapy
education requirements from 500to 650.

Alabama has terminated theAlabama Board of Massage Therapy
and its functions to create thenew Alabama Massage Therapy
Licensing Board, which willoperate under the Board of
Nursing.
If you are a resident ofAlabama, you do not need to
renew early or request anylicense under the new board.
The board has seven seats opento licensed massage therapists.
The board must be completed byJuly 1st, so if you're

interested in being a boardmember, you will need to email
your resume and cover letter tothe Alabama governor, lieutenant
governor and house speaker.

The Coalition of NationalMassage Organizations is having
a meeting June 10th through 11thin Dallas, texas.
The coalition is made up of theseven largest national
associations.
Abmp and AMTA representinsurance-based membership

Ncbtmb represents continuingeducation, fsmtb represents
state boards and the nationalexam.
Afmte represents educators,comta represents school
accreditation and the MassageTherapy Foundation represents
research.
The coalition is most wellknown for organizing and funding
the Entry-Level AnalysisProject, or ELAP, which hired

experts in massage therapy toestablish a curriculum for
entry-level massage education,and it is where the 625-hour
program standard comes from.

The coalition discussed theFSMTB Model Practice Act,
continuing education oversight,accreditation and recognition in

the massage school landscape,the Polaris Project about human
trafficking, and identificationof topics and issues for ongoing
discussion.
Further topics agreed upon werecontinuing education oversight,
human trafficking and theTeacher Standards Project.
I wrote to all of theorganizations about this year's
meeting, asking to attend as ajournalist and, if I cannot
attend, to request the coalitioncreate a report for this

meeting.
As of this episode, I havereceived three replies one from
Dawn Hogue from Compta.
She says she will not be ableto attend because this meeting
is a reschedule from theoriginal, but Compta will be
sending Dale Healy, theircommission chair.
My second response was from KimAlexander, president of AFMTE,
stating that past presidentSherry Aldrich and secretary
Vicki Winston will be attending.

She says the AFMTE isparticularly interested in
discussing gainful employment.
The last reply was from AdrianAsta, president of the Massage
Therapy Foundation, stating thatthe Massage Therapy Foundation
will not be attending becausequote since the meeting is in
person, with no hybrid option,it would be fiscally
irresponsible for us to attend.
Unquote.
She states the Massage TherapyFoundation is also looking
forward to hearing what comesout of the meeting.
