Why Did Jesus Die? | The Meaning of Good Friday

In this Good Friday bonus episode, we explore the powerful meaning behind the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and why it’s the most pivotal moment in Christian history.

Looking at the Gospel of John, we highlight how ancient prophecies were fulfilled - even through the actions of Roman soldiers. From the dividing of garments to the spear in His side, every detail reveals a divine plan. We also unpack the symbolism of the blood and water and what it means for salvation.

Jesus' final words - “It is finished” - weren’t the end, but the beginning of hope for all humanity.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey guys, here's some bonus content from the Saints
that Serve podcast.
I hope you enjoy it.
Bonus hey guys, welcome to somebonus content for the Saints
that Serve podcast.
Some very special bonus contentthe most special bonus content,
I would say I would actuallysay that this is why we do this.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Yeah, yeah, it actually is.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
We are talking about.
So it is Good Friday and it isa very good Friday, and it is a
very good Friday For those ofyou who do not know what Good
Friday is.
It is the remembrancecelebration that Christians
partake in as we remember theday that Christ Jesus Christ,

(00:48):
our Lord and Savior, wascrucified and died.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
He died on a Friday, during the Passover and he did
in fact die.
It wasn't any kind of hoax, itwasn't any kind of oh, he was
just in a coma, you knowanything silly or goofy like.
No excuses, no make-believe.
He died.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yes, the Romans were better at documenting verified
deaths than our modern-daymorgues.
So he was dead.
He was killed by Romans Romansoldiers, sorry.
And then he was put in a newtomb close to where he was
crucified.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
And that rock was rolled and closed up and the
tomb was sealed.
That is what I was looking for.
Yes, sealed.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
It was sealed and guarded.
That's.
Another thing is that it wasn'tjust sealed because there was
anticipation that people wouldtry to make it seem like his
resurrection was a hoax, becausehe predicted his own
resurrection.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Mm-hmm.
Oh, whoa, that's a littlespoiler territory for our
episode on Monday.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
That is a spoiler.
We're getting ahead.
We are doing this episode.
We're doing this episode toremember the importance of Good
Friday and then tune in Mondayto get the finisher, the full
story, Full story Of Easter.
Yeah, so I'm going to read Ihave opened up to the gospel of
John, chapter 19, and we'regoing to be starting in verse 16

(02:22):
.
In verse 16.
So he delivered him over to themto be crucified.
So they took Jesus and he wentout, bearing his own cross, to
the place called the place of askull, Galgatha, which in
Aramaic is Galgatha.
There they crucified him andwith him two others, one on

(02:50):
either side and Jesus betweenthem.
Pilate also wrote aninscription and put it on the
cross.
It read Jesus of Nazareth, theking of the Jews.
Many of the Jews read thisinscription, for the place where
Jesus was crucified was nearthe city and it was written in
Aramaic, in Latin and in Greek.
So the chief priests of theJews said to Pilate Do not write

(03:14):
the king of the Jews, butrather this man said I am king
of the Jews.
Pilate answered what I havewritten I have written.
When the soldiers had crucifiedJesus, they took his garments
and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier,
also his tunic.
But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to

(03:38):
bottom.
So they said to one another Letus not tear it, but cast lots
for it, so to see whose it shallbe.
This was to fulfill thescripture which says they
divided my garments among themand for my clothing they cast
lots.
So the soldiers did thesethings, but standing by the

(04:02):
cross of Jesus, where his motherand his mother's sister, Mary,
the wife of Clopas and MaryMagdalene, when Jesus saw his
mother and the disciple whom heloved standing nearby, he said
to his mother Woman, behold yourson.
Then he said to the discipleBehold your mother.

(04:24):
And from that hour the discipletook her to his own home.
After this, Jesus, knowing thatall was now finished, said to
fulfill the scripture, I thirst.
A jar full of sour wine stoodthere.
So they put a sponge full ofthe sour wine on a hyssop branch

(04:47):
and held it to his mouth.
When Jesus had received thesour wine, he said it is
finished.
And he bowed his head and gaveup his spirit, Since it was the
day of preparation and so thatthe bodies would not remain on
the cross on the Sabbath.

(05:08):
For that Sabbath was a high day.
The Jews asked Pilate that theirlegs might be broken and that
they might be taken away.
So the soldiers came and brokethe legs of the first and of the
other who had been crucifiedwith him.
But when they came to Jesus andsaw that he was already dead,

(05:32):
they did not break his legs.
But one of the soldiers piercedhis side with a spear and at
once there came out blood andwater.
He who saw it has borne witness.
His testimony is true and heknows that he is telling the
truth that you also may believe.

(05:53):
For these things took place, that the scripture might be
fulfilled.
Not one of his bones will bebroken.
And again another scripturesays they will look on him whom
they have pierced.
So yeah, that's the death ofChrist according to the Gospel
of John.
A little bit of a somber readingthere, yeah, and you know it's.

(06:17):
It's cool to to read it and seethat john is emphasizing like
hey, like the reason I'm tellingyou that they divided his
garments and then they cast lotsfor it.
Like that's a fulfillment, likethese are roman soldiers who
have no care to fulfill any kindof Jewish prophecy for the Jews

(06:37):
, who they consider subordinates.
But here they are fulfilling anOld Testament prophecy.
And then later on, you know, asoldier's just trying to verify
that he is no longer alive andso he spears him in the side and
it fulfills an Old Testamentprophecy of not a bone will be

(06:58):
broken, and when he spears himoutpours blood and water.
And those are significantbecause for ritual cleanliness
and spiritual cleanlinessaccording to Levitical law, for
ritual cleanliness or bodilycleanliness, like if you ever

(07:20):
have unclean discharge or womenduring their menstrual cycle or
someone with leprosy and theyget over the leprosy or whatever
, whenever those things happen, they have to go and do a
ceremonial cleansing with waterof their body, because it's an
external thing that has to becleansed before they can enter

(07:41):
into communion with God.
Whereas if they commit a moreserious sin of the heart,
meaning like they lie or theywithhold something or they're in
opposition, they covet theirneighbor or whatever, it is One
of the sins.
That's not like you have to bekilled for doing this, but you
do have to make a sacrifice.
The atonement is blood.

(08:02):
Blood has to be poured out andthat's where the animal
sacrificial system came intoplay, and so Christ died on the
cross and when they spear him, outpours blood and water, the
two necessary atoning liquids tobe atoned bodily and
spiritually, and then later onwe'll see that those are a

(08:27):
testament.
There are two of the three thattestify to Christ and his
finished work on the cross it'sthe blood, the water and the
spirit.
God's spirit was on Christ andso it's just like.
Here he is.
Jesus is dead, he's dying.

(08:47):
There's no way he has controlover these prophecies being
fulfilled and there's no waythat he could make it work out
to where the imagery would justbe so blatantly obvious to
someone who's under OldTestament law.
And yet here we are.
So, yeah, big deal, Some wouldsay the biggest deal.
Yes, Hebrews makes the point.

(09:07):
I can't remember the verse Inour Monday episode.
I'll have the verse, but itmakes the point that Christ was
the final and necessarysacrifice, Like there didn't
need to be another one after him.
He was the sacrifice that trulyatoned for all sin, both past,

(09:32):
present and future sin.
And so you know, whenever thespirit comes upon somebody and
the light that shines on theirsin and they're made aware like,
oh, I'm the bad guy, Like Ineed to be healed, Christ's
crucifixion on the cross is thesacrifice that was made in order

(09:54):
for us to be healed from oursin and to be delivered from
that death that comes from sin.
So, yeah, really cool stuff.
Like I said, I'll have thatverse in Hebrews.
It talks about him being thesacrifice.
There's not another necessaryone, Like he's the only

(10:15):
necessary sacrifice that atonesfor sin.
So, yeah, if you don't believein this and you think it's a
bunch of fairy tale nonsenseyeah, made up fairy tale
nonsense.
First off, you're wrong.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Yeah, I think that.
And in a more loving and caringstatement, reach out, and in a
more loving and caring statementreach out.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
Yeah, let us know if you have questions or if you
have disputes or corrections.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
I guess Because we're open to conversation.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
Yes, 100%, we're not going to be.
We're not going to shut youdown.
We want to hear what you haveto say.
I will say that this is themost documented ancient event
that we have today, likeChrist's life and death and
resurrection is the most writtenabout thing in all of human

(11:08):
history.
So to say that it's just madeup, you're going against a lot
of evidence that says that it'snot made up.
All because your pride doesn'tyour worldview tells you that it
can't be, and so, rather thantrying to take an unbiased

(11:29):
approach and look at it, I meanwe're the same way as Christians
.
Like anything that's outside ofChrist we tend to be biased of,
we all have our biases right, and as Americans, we have a bias
against other countries Onlybecause we live free.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Yeah, so everyone has biases because of the culture
or the paradigm that they livein, but the truth of the gospel
is that Christ died for your sin.
You are forgiven.
Receive that forgiveness sothat you can live in the eternal
life that God has for you.
He created you to live as aneternal being in this perfect

(12:12):
world that he's bringing about, and the onboarding is the
acceptance of forgivenessthrough Christ.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
So just try to have an open mind and just look at
the gospels I mean look at thegospel of John, read it all the
way through and see what peoplehave to say about people that
are.
If you're education, you're abig education person.
There's a lot of educatedpeople that have a lot to say
about the death and resurrectionof Jesus Christ.

(12:42):
Hey guys, try Christ.
Well, I don't want to say itthat way, that almost sounds
like a—.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Like you're questioning.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
Hey, just dip your feet in the water or whatever.
Like no, I mean to be totallyhonest as a Christian.
Like if you become a believer, you become counter-cultural and
so there will be a lot ofopposition in your life in
general if you choose to followChrist.

(13:14):
So I mean, some places have itworse than we do in America.
There are some countries in theworld that if they find out
you're a Christian you're goingto be killed, but here it's like
it'll say like oh, so you'redumb or you're ignorant or
you're a bigot or you're ahypocrite because you believe in
Jesus.

(13:34):
So but yes, there is somesacrifice that comes with being
a believer, and sacrifice isliving as the world lives.
But it's so much better, somuch better.
I've lived both lives and I canhonestly say that living for
Christ is way better than livingfor myself.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
So we're going to sell a t-shirt and it's going to
sell on the front it's going tosay try Christ.
On the back it's going to say, actually don't just try Christ.
And then your entire speech.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
After that, the entire speech.
Oh yeah, man, but yeah, seriously, if you have any
questions or concerns orarguments, reach out.
We would love to hear from youand we will actually talk back.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
Yep.
So thanks for tuning in to thisvery special beginning what I
would say bonus episode to ourEaster special.
Yes, so tune in on Monday Forthe grand finale, for the grand
finale of our Easter special, which, if we talked about these
things Good Friday and whatnotwe're going to go a lot deeper,

(14:45):
a lot deeper.
So I'm going to finish out withI think this applies to the end
of this episode and, as Jesussaid while he was hanging on the
cross, it is finished.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
