The legacy of Elmer T. Lee lives on through his namesake single barrel bourbon, where we compare the newest 2025 release with a 2019 bottle to explore how this iconic whiskey maintains its high standards over time.

• Elmer T. Lee was Buffalo Trace's fourth master distiller who revolutionized bourbon by launching Blanton's in 1984 as the first modern single barrel bourbon
• The 2025 Elmer T. Lee delivers exceptional nose with caramel, vanilla, and oak notes, scoring 15/18 in our barrel bottle breakdown
• Comparing 2019 vs 2025 releases shows the newer bottle has more pronounced flavors while the older release has mellowed into an easier-drinking experience
• Elmer sought bourbon with vanilla notes, smooth taste, and no harsh aftertaste – qualities still present in today's releases
• At 90 proof, Elmer T. Lee drinks well above its proof point with excellent viscosity and flavor complexity
• Both releases showcase classic bourbon characteristics with the 2025 bringing more vibrant, attention-commanding flavors

Join us on our Kentucky distillery tour as we visit Maker's Mark and Jack Daniel's in the coming days, with live updates planned throughout the journey.

The enduring legacy of bourbon pioneer Elmer T. Lee takes center stage as we crack open the new 2025 release of his namesake single barrel bourbon. This exploration celebrates the man who revolutionized the industry by introducing Blanton's in 1984 as the first modern single barrel bourbon brand.

The 2025 Elmer T. Lee immediately impresses with an exceptional nose that evokes vintage, dusty bourbons—rich caramel, perfect vanilla balance, and just the right amount of oak with zero ethanol burn. At 90 proof, this bourbon drinks well above its strength, offering remarkable complexity and a viscosity that creates beautiful, long-lasting legs in the glass. The flavor profile delivers everything Elmer himself sought when selecting barrels: pronounced vanilla-forward notes, smooth mouthfeel, and a balanced finish without harsh burn.

What makes this tasting particularly fascinating is the side-by-side comparison with a 2019 bottle. While both expressions showcase the classic Elmer T. Lee character, the 2025 release presents more vibrant, attention-commanding flavors, while the 2019 has mellowed into an exceptionally smooth, approachable pour. This comparison highlights the subtle variations between single barrels selected years apart, while confirming the consistent quality standards established by the master distiller himself.

Through rare interview footage, we hear Elmer describe his selection process in his own words, providing invaluable context for appreciating his bourbon legacy. For anyone fortunate enough to secure a bottle at its retail price of approximately $80, this expression delivers exceptional value and a direct connection to bourbon history. Whether you're new to bourbon or a seasoned enthusiast, Elmer T. Lee continues to represent everything special about Kentucky's native spirit.

So that I was.
I was impressed to be 16, so Ididn't think that for one second
that we're at that point.

(05:05):
But I know that we do a lot onYouTube.
We do a lot on Facebook.
Great to have everybody hereTonight is Elmer T Lee.
This is our podcast.
We will be doing the barrelbottle breakdown of it coming up
real soon.
I'm not going to hang aroundlong tonight.

(05:25):
We're going to get this.
We're going to get this throughin a timely manner.
I sometimes will drag on orwhatnot, but you know, you know
that's just how it goes.
Well, this is March Madness.
Our last podcast was based offthat.
You've got Irish whiskey comingout in the state of Ohio.

(05:48):
It's been fantastic.
They had an Irish whiskey eventPlus.
Then you've got releases fromthe distilleries and this past
Tuesday I picked up the newestrelease of Elmer T Lee.
I'm going to open that uptonight and we're going to do
the barrel, the bottle breakdown, and then also I have the 2019

(06:12):
and that's all I had left.
So that's why I chose to pickup that Elmer T Lee, because I
really didn't have it.
Now I got another bottle, veryexcited for that.
But in the meantime I'm going tolook this irish whiskey that I
picked up.
Uh, it is the whistler, and thewhistler, uh, comes out with
stuff and they finish.
This one was ohio liquor, barbados rum, cast 12, eight

(06:38):
aged it's 12 year and 29 monthold irish whiskey in x bourbon
barrels.
Uh, it's a single cask and um,let's see, we got 61, 100 and
the.
The proof is really up therebecause it's 61.34, so that's
121.68 proof on Irish whiskey.

(07:06):
So the Whistler, let's see, theWhistler Irish single cask was
hand-selected by and bottled forOhio liquor.
Only A select few casks offantastic quality can be
considered for our single castprogram.

(07:39):
Set aside, cast that, wow, emboss, a deep and rich flavor
profile making it a truly uniqueirish whiskey of high ice
quality.
I've never heard of emboss, butthat's what it says.
So, anyways, that's what it is.

(08:00):
Uh, the whistler sit andwhistle a while is what it says.
Um, bone and distillery companymeath ireland imported.
So we got, you know, they wentover and picked that up and we
are talking, uh, high proofirish whiskey.
And I'm gonna give this baby alittle taste to let you all know

(08:24):
how good it is.
I love rum, cask anything.
So where the Irish whiskey, youknow it's a single malt.
So into Irish, you know, firstit's in bourbon barrels and then
then it's in finished inBarbados barrels.
So I'll tell you what this oneis like.

(08:47):
Man, that's good.
One of the things about, in myopinion, the rum comes across
unbelievable with the singlemalt.
So the rum cast finish, and thereason why I got that bottle
was because it's so delicious.

(09:07):
The vanillas from the rum justadd into the irish whiskey and
then the proof is like imbue, no, it was in.
I'm telling you walker, oh,look at it again, it is in.
Our Can be reconsidered, for Iam BUS.

(09:39):
No, i-m-b-u-e, is that what youcame up with?
I-m-b-u-e, i-m-b-u-e.
So it's not M-B-U, it's M-B-U.
So there we go.
So I would say it's delicious, this one, if you ever come

(10:03):
across this one or any kind ofIrish whiskey in a rum cask
finish.
The rum works a little bitbetter with the Irish whiskey
because they're like bourbon isa lot bigger taste.
So you add the rum.
So the rum doesn't quite dowhat it does to the Irish.
You know the cask, the um, the,the single malt, the malt it's

(10:29):
just a malt, it's a malt whiskeyHmm, highly recommend,
delicious, almost like candy.
All right, so one thing I wantedto talk about quickly I was
asked and I said I would do itis that the Bourbon Capital

(10:49):
Academy in Bardstown, kentucky,is starting up classes March
15th.
It's a great way to start yourbourbon trail experience in
Bardstown.
You can go to their website andjust look up the Bourerman
Capital Academy and you can seeall the different classes they

(11:10):
have scheduled and the classesthat they're going to have
coming up.
It's in the Brendiamo Penthousewhere the Kentucky Bourbon
Festival offices are Fantasticfacility and the classes are.

(11:30):
If you're starting out inbourbon, this is the thing to do
Start here and then start thebourbon trail.
So I would highly recommend theBourbon Capital Academy.
So check that out everybody.
I did that because I know TracyGreen, who's part of that, and

(11:52):
definitely it's a good and coolway to experience Kentucky and
bourbon there's no doubt aboutit and learn a little bit.
They've got classes forbeginners and intermediate and
experts.
They've got something foreverybody.
So there you go.
I'm not a fan of rum, finishedbourbon or whiskey.

(12:13):
I will tell you this, though, thomas, you might not be a fan,
but on this one, this one, therum, vanilla candy kind of thing
, and the way that it mixes,it's much I'm.
I do like some rum castbourbons, uh, but this is, this
is on a different level.
You might like this one, that'sfor sure.

(12:34):
Um, what's up I love.
Thank you, big, big whitey.
Uh, thanks for uh checking outthe channel and thanks for
commenting what you sipping ontonight.
Um, I'm about to go.
Elmer T Lee.
So here we go.
Interesting, how does I?
It's got a thing on the bottom.

(12:55):
I thought I took them all off,but I did not.
That one made it through.
That's okay, all right.
So what I'm going to do?
I've got a little couple thingsfor everybody.
Let's see about Elmer T Lee.
First, let's pull up the iPadiPad time.

(13:18):
It's the iPad time, elmer T Lee.
I've got that right there.
I've got that right there.
There we go, all right.
So let's see, he was the masterdistiller at Buffalo Trace.

(13:45):
He was the fourth one andmaster distiller emeritus after
his retirement in 1985.
He was born in Peaks Mill, kentucky.
This is Elmer T Lee in 1919.
He is known for launchingBlanton's in 1984, the first
modern bourbon brand marketed asa single barrel marketed as a

(14:09):
single barrel.
He worked with albert blantonand uh, albert used to bring and
catch single barrel, get singlebarrels pulled out for guests
and and whatnot.
And so in 1984 elmer wanted topay tribute to colonel blanton
and he basically started pullingbarrels from where Colonel
Blanton loved the warehouse Hit's metal and he pulled them

(14:32):
specifically from where AlbertBlanton did.
That's great, randy, that youpicked up your MSRP.
Are you in Ohio?
Because Ohio kind of killed iton Tuesday.
That's where I got my newestone too.
He's president of the KentuckyDistillery credited the premium

(14:52):
market that Mr Lee pioneered asa major factor in the bourbon
industry's turnaround in thelast decade.
Sales reached 30 milliongallons in 2012 for the first
time since 1973.
All right, he entered theUniversity of Kentucky but
withdrew to volunteer for theArmy in World War II.
He served as a radar bombardierin a B-29 bomber based in Guam.

(15:16):
Mr Lee returned to theuniversity after the war to get
his degree and began working atthe distillery as a maintenance
engineer when, under a differentowner, it was called the George
T Stagg Distillery at the time.
He was promoted to plantsuperintendent in 1966 and to
plant manager in 1969 and giventhe title Master Distiller in

(15:39):
the early 1980s, after hisretirement at Buffalo Trace.
Retirement, buffalo tracehonored mr lee with a single
barrel brand of his own, theelmer t lee kentucky straight
bourbon whiskey bottled frombarrels.
He continued selecting himselfinto the 90s.
The label won gold medals in2013 at both the los angeles

(16:03):
international wine and spiritsCompetition and the San
Francisco World SpiritsCompetition.
The journal Whiskey Advocatedescribed its flavor as elegant
and complex.
Lee was inducted into theKentucky Bourbon Fall of Fame in
2001 and received the LifetimeAchievement Award from both
Whiskey Advocate in 2002 andWhiskey Magazine in 2012.

(16:24):
Lee died in Frankfort, kentucky, in 2013 at the age of 93.
What a life, especially whenyou're considering he was in the
distilling industry.
You know, some people say thatwhiskey is hard on your body and
other people say that whiskeyis good for you.
Connected, all of Connecticut,of all states.

(16:49):
Nice, he picked it up inConnecticut.
That's excellent.
I think this is an actualtribute to them, making enough
that everybody's starting to getsome.
So that's kind of cool to dothat Now.
I do have a quick share screenand I have it.
Let's see if I can do it.

(17:09):
Share my share, share, let'ssee if I got it up.
All right, that's it.
Let's bring that up.
Share, and this is the start ofan interview that was done,
done and I'll play it for alittle bit.
This is Elmer.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
T Lee.
I worked here during the springbreaks and the summer vacations
from the university.
I worked here for a few weeksand got to know the plant and
they got to know me.
So when I graduated I wasoffered a job here and I went to

(17:52):
work here in 1949.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
Tell me a little bit more about the Elmer T Lee brand
.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
As you said earlier, that was established some years
ago upon your retirement, isthat not?

Speaker 1 (18:09):
true In 1986.

Speaker 3 (18:13):
Tell me a bit about the process of selection.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
You do that.
Tell me what you're looking for.

Speaker 3 (18:19):
I'm looking for what I consider to be the proper
taste for bourbon.
It's going to have thecharacteristics that good
bourbon has.
It's going to have vanilla-typetaste.
It's going to have a smoothtaste to the palate.

(18:40):
It's going to have some vanillaI mentioned that Vanilla taste
to it and it's just a goodsmooth bourbon flavor to it.
It's highly flavored not highlyflavored, but it's got a good
flavor to it and it don't havean aftertaste burn to it.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Have a aftertaste burn to it, that's the things I
guard against when I'm tastingit.
There you go.
That's his selection thing.
And let's see, I should be ableto.
How can I do this?
Where do you go to stop sharing?
That's like crazy that it's not.

(19:30):
The button's not there.
All right, let's go back to.
Okay, let's see Close window.
Move to iPad?
All right, that is funny.
Oh, it's this.
I'm going to look for my Zoom.
Oh, sharing, stop share.

(19:51):
There we go.
All right, back.
I'm back.
You got to hear what he doesright from Elmer.
Elmer write his own words onthe interview.
I find that spectacular, whathe looks for and the simpleness.
I mean, this is the man whostarted Blanton's in 1984.
He's the one that is creditedfor the single barrel.

(20:13):
So with that, let's get intothe Elmer T Lee 2025 that I
picked up on Tuesday because ofthe state of Ohio's March
Madness.
I mean, this drop was crazy.
Everybody kind of got a littlebit of a glimpse of it, but
everybody thought around fouro'clock I got there and I was
about 20th in line and thenthere was no email and I had an

(20:38):
appointment.
So I had to bow out and at 4.54the email went out and I got
through my appointment andheaded over back into line.
I was about I would say nowabout 80, 85th in line and got
there at five to six.
I mean we're talking fiveminutes before drop time.
I went through.

(20:58):
I ended up with an Elmer T Lee.
I could have also gone backthrough and got a Weller 12 year
, but I also had picked up aspecial bottle that was a decent
price and that is a specialbottle that's going to be going
out to somebody.
So that was kind of cool.

(21:18):
So let's start the OldLouisville Whiskey Company
Barrel Bottle Breakdown of ElmerT Lee.
While I'm opening this this is afresh crack I am about to tell

(21:39):
you about our barrel bottlebreakdown rating system.
We base it off of NOX.
There are four categories Nose, which is your aroma, smell,
body, taste and finish.
The nose and the body can getup to four NOX the taste and the

(22:06):
finish can get up to fiveknocks.
The old louisville whiskeycompany in louisville, kentucky,
amin there does a great job.
Uh, you got to check it out.
Get over there.
Um, look it up.
You don't want to miss out.
And if you go there, let themknow that Tiny sent you over

(22:28):
there and he's got barrels inthe back.
He's got his tour experience.
You can buy Pretty much.
His distribution is straightfrom the distilleries and he has
now got his own little potstill this there and he's
running some there.
So it's really cool oldlouisville whiskey company.

(22:52):
So you can give it up to fiveknocks on the taste and the
finish and if one of thecategories is exceptional, you
can add an extra knock, which iscalled a boot up up.
So with no more, let's see.
Uh oh, over here I've got myknocker, my trusty bung hammer,

(23:18):
and I'm going to knock thebarrel over here behind me.
Some people can hear it, somepeople't, but I will tell you
how many I give it and I willmake a noise one way or another
when we're knocking.
So this is Elmer 2025 FreshCrack.
Elmer T Lee.
I always like, when I open itto let the air come out.

(23:42):
I even sometimes sniff it outand know that that air has been
sitting in there for a while.
There's fresh air and we'regoing to basically tip this over
, shake it up a little bit, getit there.
So any of that air, whateverit's all mixed in, and here we
go.
Elmer T Lee is 90 proof.

(24:03):
We've just heard from him.
I'll read what it says on theback.
I believe I did this before,but let's just say Elmer T Lee
blew some of the finest bourbonsever bottled.
This single barrel bourbon is atribute to him and you heard
how he picked it.
Now he's not obviously pickingit anymore, so it is a single

(24:26):
barrel.
At night, some, some arewinners, some are losers, but in
this case, most of the time, what he was looking for, I think
they look for, and I can't seeit being a loser.
Now I'm gonna let y'all knowhow this goes and then
afterwards we're going tocompare the two the 2019 to the
2025.

(24:47):
Oh, the nose is almost.
Oh my God, it's the nose of aDusty.
I don't know why.
Tons of caramel this is likeold-fashioned whiskey.
This is the stuff that I drinkat Revival Spirits with Brad
Bonds.
Drink at Revival Spirits withBrad Bonds.

(25:21):
Oh my God, that's off thecharts.
Caramel, vanilla, just theright amount of oak.
No, no ethanol.
Oh, that's what I want kentuckyto whiskey to taste like.
Let's see what it does in myglass.
Let's roll this baby around.
We're rolling it.
There it comes.

(25:43):
You bring that up off the glassand you look at it's 90 proof
the nose, in my opinion, isalready that that's an
exceptional nose and it'ssticking to that glen, the, the
legs still haven't started toform, and what's forming?

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Wow, wow.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
It's really long legs .
That's got some nice viscosityto it.
All right, let's see what ittastes like.
We'll do the body and the.
The caramel vanilla that is.

(27:08):
That's delicious.
That is really a good barrel.
Oak leather.
Finish is decent.
The finish is decent.
I would say that is damn.
That's damn good whiskey.
This is my wheelhouse here.

(27:30):
All right, this one's an easyone.
All right.
The nose is the real strongpoint of this.
I am going to give the nose.
I will give it a.

(27:51):
I'm going to give it fourknocks, the most I can, and I'm
going to give the nose a, but upup.
One, two, three, four and a,but up up.
So five out of four alreadyCan't give any more but up ups.

(28:14):
But now the body Great body fora 90 proof.
But taste hits your cheeks, butnot the body part.
It's really good.
On the body, I'm going to givethe body a three, three, one,

(28:40):
two, three.
So right now we're sitting ateight, three and five.
Taste it's what I want a bourbonto taste like.
There's a perfect right amountof caramel.
That's what I want a bourbon totaste like.
There's a perfect right amountof caramel, perfect amount of

(29:03):
vanilla and then there's alittle bit of, I want to say,
char, a little bit of oak, alittle bit of leather on the
finish, and the finish is long.
That's a damn good bottle.
That is a damn good bottle andthe bottle's really cool.

(29:24):
It's got Elmer T Lee but in theback it's got a picture of him.
Now when it's full you see theElmer T Lee, but as it empties
you see more of the picture ofhim.
So it's really kind of cool.
Cool bottle, cool presentation,all right.
Taste-wise.
Out of five, I I'm gonna give ita four, four.
It's really good, all right.

(29:45):
So we'll give it a four, four, one, two, three, four on taste
and the finish.
The finish for me is also.

(30:07):
It's long, but we're dealingwith a little bit of leather and
oak and char, not as sweet.
I like a sweet finish.
So I think on this one I amgoing to give the finish a three
, one, two, three.
So tiny in the old louisvillebarrel bottle breakdown highly

(30:33):
recommends a bottle for this.
No doubt.
If you can get a bottle of itit's great.
And it's a 15 out of 18 at a 90proof and I mean you're talking
eight out of eight and thenseven out of 10 on the taste and
the and which caught, and weare talking about, I mean, 15

(30:58):
out of 18 on a, on a 90 proof.
This Elmer T Lee has delivered, all right.
So 15 out of 18 on that, elmerT Lee.
So do you do all that on thetours?
I do it on my tastings.
They're big, big whitey andThomas.

(31:19):
You know, sometimes in MichiganI've I've been up there seeing
some stuff, all right.
So now comes the fun part.
Um, this is a 2019 given to meby Super Nash.
I am going to compare the two.
This has been in the bottle andthis is just all I have left.

(31:42):
That's why I wanted to get.
This is just all I have left.
That's why I wanted to get thisnew Elmer T Lee, and we'll
right now.
It was $80 for the MSRP.
This was people were shocked atthe because it probably went up
, I think, since last yearalmost twenty dollars.

(32:02):
So we'll see what it's good,all right.
So we're going to compare thetwo.
Um, two single barrels going upagainst each other, and this
one's six years old and this oneis brand new.
So I'm going to do a littletaste here.
Gotta love that.
Now I'm going to see how closethis is.

(32:24):
There is the vanilla and thenthere's the caramel aspect of
that one.
This is 90 proof.
That does a great thing.
Let's roll that baby around inthe glass and see what happens
with that.
All right, we're going to dothat.
We're going to see.
See how it sticks.
It seems to be doing similarstuff.
Same thing.

(32:45):
Both of them are 90 proof andnice then it's.
It's sticking, maybe a littlebit longer, but that's been in
the that's.
Uh, this is a bottom pouropposed to a top pour, so let's
see what happens.
Not, the nose is nowhere nearthis nose.

(33:05):
This one has a little bit morepepper and a little bit of a
sting.
All right, let's see what ittastes like.
Interesting, this one is waymore easy.

(33:37):
That one drinks higher than a90.
This one's drinking like an 80.
They're very close, but thisone's more poignant everything's

(33:57):
.
This one's mellowed down.
The 2019 is a softer.
This one's mellowed down 2019is a softer pour, but they are
very close.

(34:22):
I would say on this one, the2019,.
A lot of people say that ElmerT Lee is good, but it just
doesn't pop.
Where the 2025 does pop, the2019 is very, very easy.

(34:43):
I would say this is a great.
The 2019.
I would give this to somebodywho was starting out.
There's a lot of vanilla inthat.
Wow, this one's just more.

(35:13):
Everything's more.
Stand up at attention on the2025.
The flavors are pronounced.
At attention on the 2025.
The flavors are pronounced, whereas the same flavors are all
kind of like hanging out.

(35:34):
This nose is much better.
There's something about thisnose that's a little bit
different.
I'm going to say the 2025 isbetter than 2019.

(35:57):
I really recommend the 15 outof 18 on that.
I really recommend the 15 outof 18 on that.
Elmer T Lee.
Oh, I lost my.
Let's see what we're doing here.
All right, drew says it's avery easy and smooth bourbon
with classic bourbon notes.
I would say that the 2019 isdefinitely easy and smooth, like

(36:25):
you said, with the ClassicBourbon Notes.
This one is Classic BourbonNotes but it's got a kick.
So I'm going with the 2025 overthe 2019.
But I for sure will finish that2019 and reestablish the 2025
on my shelf.

(36:47):
So there we go, folks, thescotchy bourbon boys.
Old louisville whiskey companybarrel bottle breakdown for
tonight.
So we've done the with thewhistler.
We've done the elmer t.
We've done the Elmer T Lee.
It's funny because I haven'thad that much, but I haven't
been having much at all becauseof the fact that having

(37:12):
pneumonia and a gallbladderattack really kind of made it a
little bit rough on me.

(37:36):
Um, uh, 82, 99 in the jewel Osco.
Um, yeah, I think we were 80, Ithink we were 79, 99.
I think that's one thing.
So it was probably out the doorright around what you said.
Um, really, someone's going totry and like, I don't understand
why someone's gonna call me amI always fun to watch?
But he drinks stuck in aconference, whatever, all right,
why I'm getting called.

(37:57):
All right, that's actually.
And that's probably messing upthe All right, let's just get
off that.
And I think I'm Stefan.
I'm on my podcast.
I got to go Tell them to videochat me.
No, I can't do anything rightnow.
I'm on my podcast.
Okay, sorry folks, I'm going toget back onto the YouTube.

(38:22):

I'm going to unpause it.
No, it looks like we're stillgoing.
Are we still going?
Yep, we're still going.

I don't know how that wouldhappen, but that did you know.

(38:44):

We're live and I'll just goback to YouTube and catch that
feed.
There we are, let's see, play, all right, all right.
All right, all right, I'mprobably not on the live part.

(39:08):
Let's just go here and catch up.
I know how to do this.
All right, here we go Live, let's see.
All right, that was me messingaround.
All right, no sound, there yougo.
Yep, the sound came because, uh, my son just was trying to.

(39:31):
It doesn't matter, all rightanyways.
All right, so that's prettymuch it for tonight.

Uh, look for a couple, uh, I Imight do a couple lives from
florida, might do a live fromjack daniels.

And another thing again as soonas I uploaded our cover song
from the Alabama song, which isa cover from 1914 that the Doors

(40:39):
did and then BMI Records wasdisputing it.
And now there's another disputefrom another record company on
Little Steve-O's cover of theAlabama song that I put on.
But I'm doing the dispute.
I'm going to not be able tofinish up with the Alabama song
till this dispute is done, butonce it's done hopefully it's

(41:01):
done and we'll keep going, because I don't know what the
hell is going on, that peopleare trying.
Obviously I'm getting bigenough that people think they
want a piece of me, so we'll seewhat happens.
Do a live from my, randy.
I won't have time to do a livefrom your place in Florida.

(41:23):
I wish I did, but my mom'scooking dinner, so it just
depends when I go through andSave Travels Tomorrow one of my
favorites.
