Speaker 1 (00:02):
Middle West Spirits
was founded in 2008,.
Focusing on elevating thedistinct flavors of the Ohio
River Valley.
Their spirits honor their rootsand reflect their originality
as makers, their integrity asproducers, and their the start
to the bottle, to your glass, with unique weeded and rye
(00:28):
bourbons, and also rye and wheatwhiskeys.
The Michelon brand is easy tosip.
It might be a grain-to-glassexperience, but I like to think
of it as uncut and unfilteredfrom their family to yours.
Really, what is going on?
(00:55):
Hold on, folks, I'm going toget this.
That doesn't make any sense.
Let's try that.
There.
(01:25):
It is.
There we go, there we go.
Yeah, all right, folks.
Uh, we'll just give a.
We lost the.
We'll just give a brief recapof it.
Am I going?
Yeah, I'm going.
I lost the thing.
We are getting things.
Welcome everybody.
(01:46):
We are going to do the JackDaniels triple malt and I just
gave a whole brief thing, butmaybe I can brief it afterwards,
after we're done.
But basically it's made ofthree different malts a rye,
jack Daniels rye, mash bill, mash bill.
(02:07):
Also it's made of Jack Danielsregular mash bill 8012 barley,
8012 rye.
And then the last one is 100%American single malt.
I mean, it's American malt.
And who knew that they made aJack Daniels.
Oh, you have a couple of JackDaniels single malts.
Oh, okay, randy, so this wasthe first expression that they
(02:29):
included in, but now they haveit.
So I'm going to put this in myglass and we are going to do the
Old Louisville Whiskey Company.
They're in Louisville, kentucky, with Amin down there, their
sponsored barrel bottlebreakdown for the Scotchy
(02:49):
Bourbon Boys.
The barrel bottle breakdown ismade up of a Nox you can get
from four categories of aroma, taste, body and finish aroma,
(03:11):
taste, body and finish um.
The aroma and the body are in acategory of up to four knocks
and the taste and the finish arein a category of up to five
knocks per category.
If you think one of thecategories is exceptional, I can
give it a but up up so that itcan get an extra, but it's only
one category that you can giveit an extra um every once that
it can get an extra, but it'sonly one category that you can
give it an extra um every once.
While I broke the rules, but inthis case we're going to give
(03:32):
this uh, barrel bottle breakdownfor jack daniels triple mash
one and I'm I I really believethat this is my overall favorite
Jack Daniels.
Of all of it I've tasted a lot.
I've tasted barrel proof it allhas.
(03:55):
Randy was saying a lot of ithas.
I'm going to put some in theshot glass because I'm going to
respect it.
I pulled this from the tastingit's little when we bought our,
our stuff.
I've got the hat right here.
I really like this hat.
It's kind of a cool hat, there's no doubt.
(04:16):
But, um, that's what it is.
It's in there.
I'll put that up there.
But in the glass.
I'll put that up there, but inthe glass.
Let's check out the bottle.
You can see that, remember.
Check outwwwscotchiebourbonboyscom for
t-shirts and glens.
They're there.
(04:36):
Or contact me directly righthere on Facebook.
I'll send you it.
You know, venmo me the cash andI'll send you a t-shirt and a
glen.
We love these Scotchie BourbonBoys Glens.
I love this.
To be able to do this, oh tricky.
And you hold it up and in theglass it has thick legs as it
(04:56):
drops back down Long thick legs.
I don't know if you can seethat yes, you kind of can in the
reflection.
That is some nice, um,viscosity.
That's one thing that I thoughtabout this triple mash.
When you're dealing with thethree different mashes.
I mean I don't know what thisis so unique to jack daniels,
considering, um, they've beendoing so much.
(05:17):
Uh, what would you say?
Um, they do so, they.
They just did jack daniels.
Then they came out with singlebarrel.
Then they came out with um,their their barrel proof, but
overall it's the same mash billand it all has the similar thing
going on.
But, um, I find it that this issomething unique and different
(05:42):
and I really like it.
So I'm a little bit biased tostart off.
So I am going to take a sip.
I mean the rye, the bourbon orthe Tennessee whiskey sweetness
(06:10):
is amazing.
It is sweet, it's right upthere.
It's the sweetest Jack Danielsproduct by a mile.
And I don't you know that maltyflavor that single malts have.
It's kind of hmm, what is it?
(06:34):
Let me do that again.
I'm trying to think what cerealthat is.
I'm trying to say Lucky Charms, you pick up the grain of the
(06:57):
barley.
Oh, it's close.
I'm trying to think what elseis there.
Let's try that again.
It's delicious.
The nose I would have to, like Igot to figure out with my
(07:41):
nosing kit what that's, whatthose smells are.
The sweetness is so good.
All right.
So there's a little bit of, youwould say, the marzipan on the
nose.
It's chocolatey and it's justthe right.
I mean it just.
For me this just fits as far asa nose.
It's only a $40 bottle ofbourbon.
(08:02):
But when you're looking fordifferent, it's kind of cool.
I mean it's different.
It's not like any Jack DanielsI've ever had.
So there's up front, on thetaste, it's hard for you to say
(08:41):
they didn't add sugar, hard foryou to say they didn't add sugar
.
I feel like now it's somethingsweet, like it's caramel but
maple.
So it kind of goes from caramelmaple.
Then it pulls off an oak, somewhat of an oak flavor, like
(09:07):
the wood of the barrel, a littlebit of char and then there's
nothing harsh about it With a.
(09:40):
It almost goes cinnamon, likeyou had a breath mint, but then
it's sweet and then it'schocolate.
But what kind of chocolate?
I don't know if it's marzipan,because that's bland to me.
Usually it's more like a darkchocolate and the finish is
(10:02):
medium.
But the dark chocolate hangsout like no, it's long, it just
hangs out in the back, sothere's no leather.
It's like a dark chocolate, hazelnut finish like dark, dark
but with a little bit ofhazelnut to add the sweetness in
(10:25):
.
So that's kind of a cool.
I'm like you could see me.
I looked at the thing, youcould see me there.
Uh, just thinking I'll sit backup.
Uh, so far are we still.
We're still going.
So let's give this.
Let's do the bottle, the barrel, bottle breakdown of, let's see
(10:50):
.
So I'm gonna give this nose.
Now there's a little pepper onthat one.
I'm gonna give the nose a three, three bright knocks on the
(11:16):
barrel.
Now I would say sugar smackcereal.
Let's see.
Almost.
Yeah, I think that's closerthan Lucky Charms there.
(11:36):
John Cheers, matt, good to seeyou.
Let's go to the body.
In the glass it does amazingand you're drinking it.
(11:59):
If I could give it a three anda half, I would.
The half is there.
I don't know if I could givethe body a four, but it's three.
So it's definitely a three onthe body.
(12:20):
Now this is the part where it'stricky for me, I think out of
five I really like this, butthis has the richness and
goodness that I like, but Idon't.
I don't see it having it's sosweet.
(12:45):
I don't see it having it's sosweet.
It's really really sweet.
Like it's like you would thinkthis was flavored.
It's that good as far assweetness Taste, it's just not
(13:08):
complex enough.
Its complexity is that it hasflavors of mixing a rye, a
Tennessee whiskey, slash bourbonand then American single malt
all together.
So the complexity is that Ihave a hard time picking out the
(13:31):
flavors because they're notflavors that are normally there.
But they are delicious.
I gotta give it four of five onthe taste.
That's what I'm gonna do.
I fixed my, I fixed the barrelthis weekend, I did a whole new
(13:54):
cleanup and everything on the,so that everything behind if you
look, there's some new bottlesback there and there's not the
same ones always as always.
And you know I've pretty muchstraightened everything up.
It was clutter.
I couldn't move around.
Oh, there was a really coolspider down here too.
(14:15):
I sucked that baby up.
Wife thought it was a brownrecluse, but I don't know A
brown recluse Recluse, that'sfunny.
And then I look at John RichSugar Smack cereal with the frog
.
Yeah, I could see that Allright.
So we gave it the.
(14:39):
The finish is pleasant.
You're talking about a nicedark chocolate, a sweet dark
chocolate, not a dark darkchocolate, and there's a little
bit of nutty hazelnut in there.
That's a delicious finish.
That's surprising and, like Isay, I absolutely love this.
This is, this is something thatI go out of my way.
(14:59):
If I see a bottle and I'mgetting low, I'm gonna buy
another bottle of it.
It's just something that iskind of special from Jack
Daniels and, uh, I would.
It's definitely highlyrecommendable.
But the finish I'm going togive a four to two.
So we're looking at 14 out of 18for a 40 bottle of bourbon or
(15:26):
whiskey, blended whiskey.
I mean, can you go wrong withthat?
Um, I think that 14 out of 18on.
I wish there was a couple ofthe other guys on tonight, but
they're not.
But I picked this because Ithought it was kind of special
(15:48):
and it was a good thing to doand a good sequence into as we
move that out.
14 out of 18,.
Folks Highly recommend JackDaniels' triple mash.
I would say normally JackDaniels for me is a 10 or a 12,
depending on 8 out of 18.
(16:10):
Not bad, but it's not myfavorite.
So there you go, 14 out of 18.
All right, so let's start ourbeginner bourbon.
So the way that I look at abeginner bourbon is people just
getting into.
There's two types of beginners.
One, somebody who has drankwhiskey their whole life and
(16:34):
they've drank Jim Beam and JackDaniels and they've had stuff at
the bar.
They had some Maker's Mark,wild Turkey 101, and they're
ready to come into the lifestyleof, you know, not getting, not
drinking whiskey to get drunk, but drinking whiskey to drinking
(17:00):
whiskey to get drunk butdrinking whiskey to um,
appreciate it and taste it.
And, you know, kick back, relax, you know, just do the whole
bourbon lifestyle or whiskeylifestyle.
That's like.
That's one of the reasons whyscotch was so popular, in my
opinion.
I don't know anybody who justchugs scotch or goes out and
(17:20):
does shots of scotch.
You get a scotch, it's becausethere's some value to it and
you're celebrating and you'rejust having it, you're sipping,
relaxing.
That's what scotch was and nowthat's what bourbon is to me.
So if you're a beginner goinginto the connoisseur, that's one
(17:43):
thing, but if you're a beginner, that's starting out.
Somebody who really didn't likewhiskey and didn't drink a lot
of whiskey, people who drankvodka, gin, rum, whatnot these
ones that I'm going to discussand one's going to be
controversial.
I don't think they might all becontroversial, but there's what
(18:03):
I started with.
The main thing of what Istarted with was started with
was Jack Daniels was all.
I was like whatever.
But what got me first was BasilHayden.
(18:25):
Now, this isn't Basil Hayden, this is Basil Hayden 10 year.
So I'm kind of going out on alimb tonight and saying I would
suggest Basil Hayden too, Ithink.
Think anybody who wants tostart.
It's a great bottle, greatdesign, nice cap.
Basil Hayden is 80 proof, soyou're not going to get
(18:47):
overproofed and the regularBasil hayden is fantastic.
But if I wanted to pullsomebody in and take them
instantly where they'd be likereally, really impressed.
But it also is the right.
(19:09):
Um, what would you say?
Let's get a little water inthere.
The right thing I would suggestto somebody, if they could get
it, basil hayden 10 one.
(19:30):
It's a little bit moreexpensive than basil hayden,
it's a higher end bottle, butwhat 10 year is is.
Basil Hayden to me lacks alittle bit of flavor, where I
want a little bit more flavor at80 proof.
(19:52):
Well, in my opinion, to startout, if you were going to start
somebody out who was gettinginto the higher ends or you're
just starting out and youhaven't I think Basil Hayden
Tenure is a fantastic one tostart out.
It's a perfect bridge.
You're going to be paying alittle bit more.
(20:15):
You're not paying the $40, $35,$40.
You're paying the $50, $60.
And that's where whiskey isright now.
So I really think that thebridge for somebody all right,
$79.99.
All right.
But in Ohio it was $74.99, ifI'm not mistaken, the last time
(20:39):
I got it, when I got this bottle.
So the nose on it isspectacular.
It's bourbon, it's, you know, aJim Beam product at $80.
Anything higher proof in thismash bill from Jim Beam is old
granddad.
They said they're neverchanging Basil Hayden as far as
(21:04):
its standard $80.
Then the $10, it's $80.
They're keeping it at 10-yearand everything.
But when you're talking aboutbottled and bond, basil Hayden
is old granddad.
That's the next level.
That's why they don't change it, because they already have the
brand in another form.
So this is going to stay thesame all along.
(21:26):
But there's also a reason whythey're not changing Basil
Hayden.
As far as Basil Hayden, now, they have Basil Hayden Smoke.
They have Basil Hayden Toast, one of my wife's favorite.
They have different expressions.
They have dark Hayden smoke.
They have basil Hayden toast, one of my wife's favorite.
They have different expressions.
They have dark rye, they haveCaribbean rye.
They've done all differentexpressions with basil Hayden
but it sticks at this 80 proof.
(21:50):
You know, up until six, sevenyears ago, I'm telling you, 80
proof was more than enough prooffor most people here in the
United States, it just was.
So you know that one rightthere for me is a perfect one.
You want to start someone offand they're at your bar and
(22:24):
they're like whatever you pullout, basil Hayden 10, I think
you make.
Yeah, they're no.
Bottled in Bond, the Bottled inBond is Old Grandad Walker.
This is 80 proof.
But Bottled in Bond, basilHayden is old granddad.
Old granddad becomes the mashbill of Basil Hayden.
When it's in a bottled in bondform, it becomes old granddad.
(22:47):
That's what I was making outfor that one.
But you drink it.
In my opinion, the 10-year haseverything that you need, but it
is People who are just startingon it, beginners.
The word that they want to useis everything's too harsh.
They want smooth and in myopinion I call it easy, and this
(23:11):
is easy with flavor.
That's what I want to say, whereas a lot of time with
regular Basil Hayden there's notas much flavor.
So you can get somebody I thinkmost people like if somebody
drinks Jim Beam.
I think this for them to getthem into the sipping thing,
(23:34):
that's great.
If they've had Jim Bean andJack Daniels, those are a little
bit harsher.
And what does harsh mean?
They got more pepper, they gotmore spice.
That's a little bit hotter, adeeper Kentucky hug.
That's what harsher is.
When you're talking about easy, you're talking about you can
taste the whiskey and you couldkeep it in your mouth and you
(23:56):
don't get the pepper or thespice burning your, burning your
tongue or heating up yourtongue so you can't taste the
flavors.
I could keep that.
And it's sweet.
It's got that flavor, that nicebourbon flavor of you know, not
(24:20):
too much caramel, a little bitof the, the basil, um, the Jim
Beam peanuts there, the.
It's just fantastic one tostart off at.
And that's the first one.
The second one it's another JimBeam product that is bottled in
bond.
And when we talk if you talk toBernie Lubbers who's going to
(24:41):
be on the podcast coming up,there's not a lot of bottled in
bond.
Bottled in bond bourbons arethe least produced bourbons in
the world.
So that is kind of cool.
And this right here is Old Tub.
Now, old Tub is unfiltered.
This is the original brand ofJim Beam's Jacob Beam.
(25:06):
This is what the Beams made fora long time.
It was Old Tub and this one'sBottled and Bond 100 proof.
Let me read the label.
But this is another one.
If somebody is a beam drinkerand they want to start to get in
to another level, I really loveOld Tub.
(25:29):
Now, old Tub is less easy.
It's not harsh like beam, easy,it's not harsh like beam, but
it's um, gotta gotta kick.
So it's somebody who likeswhiskey that then they don't
mind the little bit of the bite.
This has it.
So this says all right.
(25:51):
Before jim beam bourbon, theBeam family made Old Tub, an
unfiltered bonded bourbon.
Old Tub was the foundation forwhat would become the world's
number one bourbon.
This limited edition bottle isa tribute to that groundbreaking
whiskey.
It comes out, it doesn't.
It's not always on the shelf, but when I get one, when my
(26:15):
baseball draft is next mondayand I will be drinking this old
tub and um, it's still got a, acork, it's a synthetic and let's
see what this does tonight,I'll just add a little bit of
that.
And once again, in my opinion, great to suggest to somebody,
(26:35):
especially if they like beam, but they, you know, they know
they're like.
I just like Jim Beam, I likeJack Daniels, and you want to
get them, you want to bridgethem into higher end bourbons.
This is the one.
Also, you got Basil Hayden, Igot one more.
Yep, there's a little bit more.
(26:56):
There's a little more, there'sa little, it's 100 proof.
It's got a little bit ofleather on it.
Um, jim Beam with the add ofleather, and this is more like
just what would.
This was for a whiskey lover, that would, um.
The other comparison that Iwould use is Old Taylor Small
Batch.
(27:16):
But I'm going to tell you, oldTaylor Small Batch is bottled in
bond and it's these two.
This is cheaper, this is like$24.99, where Old Taylor will
run you about $50 right now or$40 something.
But but Valiant Hanick said didyou ever try Melody Brothers?
(27:39):
I have, but not a beginnerbourbon, that's for sure.
So I'll say that the Old Tubhas a little bit more of the
bourbon flavor and the whiskey, but it's not complex.
So you're going to be able topick some of the flavors out for
someone beginning and this issomething that I'd offer,
(28:01):
because they are able to pickthese flavors out and then you
can kind of say do you taste alittle bit of caramel?
Do you taste a little bit ofpeanut?
Do you taste the leather on thefinish?
You can kind of this is rightfor it's great for people who
start out, but those two andbasil hated in the tenure.
But my thing is someone uh, Ibelieve one of the guys said
(28:24):
tonight that they suggested evanwilliams bottled in bond twenty
dollars.
It's good and I I admit, but Idon't think evan williams
bottled in bond is good for abeginner and the reason why I I
say that is because EvanWilliams bottled in Bond, in my
opinion, is a man's man'sbourbon and if you're trying to
(28:44):
get someone into it and they'vebeen drinking Jack Daniels or
whatever, it might be a littlebit, too much bit, um, too much.
But this evan williams and it,this, this is one of my favorite
(29:05):
.
It is, I want to say, let'sjust get right back at it.
Um, this, this is a blend.
Again, it's called evanwilliams.
I want to say master blend, kKentucky Straight Bourbon
Whiskey.
So it's bourbon, a blend ofdifferent bourbons, and it is 90
proof.
Now it's 10 proof points lowerthan the Bottled and Bond.
(29:34):
It is, I believe, now 80 bucksa bottle.
When I first started I think itwas $59.99.
It's 60 bucks a bottle but it'sup to 80.
It might even be $99 a bottle, but it's only available at the
Evan Williams Experience.
But if I'm going to takesomebody and I think about what
(29:55):
to give them which is a greatbeginner's bourbon that has
flavor beyond its thing I'mgoing with this master blend.
It has uh, do we go?
What did we go with?
Okay, we put it over there.
It has a masterful blend offive various Evan Williams
(30:20):
expressions.
Each of these well-craftedbourbons have been married
together form a rare and uniquebottling of bourbon.
The Evan Williams familyincludes four different types of
American whiskey types, allrepresented in an expertly
mingled to form a distinctquality bourbon worthy of Evan
Williams' name.
They have I believe it's the24-year they have some of it of
the higher-end bourbon that theysell very rarely.
(30:44):
But this blend is, in myopinion, the perfect beginners.
I understand the bottle's alittle bit expensive, but if
you're going to do it, if youcan get this and you do anybody
who tries this the flavor isunbelievable.
(31:05):
It's, it's sweet, the finish isgood and it is easy.
Very, very, very.
For a 90 proof.
This is a drinkable, fantasticintroduction to what bourbon
(31:32):
should taste like.
I mean, I like Cave Hill.
That's another one that Iabsolutely love, except once
again, I don't think it'sintroduction to somebody because
I think it's got too much punch.
Most people that you want to getin, you want to start them off
so they can taste the flavors, but you don't want it so peppery
and spicy.
They can't, and they'rebasically all they tell you is
it burns, it burns.
This isn't going to.
None of these three are goingto burn.
All of them are going to be fordifferent people.
(31:55):
Starting out this, in myopinion, someone who loves
scotch, you do this basil haydentenure and you convert them
over with that.
Somebody who likes jack daniels, jim beam and wants a little
bit more old tub's, a greatthing to bring them over as a
beginner.
But if you're talking aboutsomebody straight up is coming
(32:15):
and they say they don't likebourbon, you, you have them
taste this and, in my opinion, you're going to basically start
them off on their bourbonjourney.
So those are the three that Idefinitely definitely consider
you know and like.
So it's kind of cool and my itjust.
These are, these are myopinions, these are my
(32:36):
suggestions.
Tiny loves to talk.
I also love to stop therecording and miss the whole
thing.
I will say for everybody whocame on I just want to quickly
redo what the mash bills are.
Redo what the mash bills are.
(32:59):
I wonder if it's actuallyprobably I don't have to go on
the on the website, but I willif I have to.
A blend of three bondedwhiskeys with pleasant notes of
honey, malt and soft oak, leading to a long, well bottled
and bond.
Damn that says that a blend ofamerican malt.
Okay, so I'll give you the, thetotal breakdown, real quick.
That's fine.
(33:19):
I know people stick around fora sec.
Let me just review this for thepeople on the podcast.
I promised understand it justall of a sudden stopped and then
you were back in.
We're almost to the point.
But I can, I'm, I'm right there.
I will tell you so.
The Jack Daniels triple mashthat picked up 14 out of 18
(33:43):
knocks in our barrel bottlebreakdown the mash bill is 60%
Jack Daniels Tennessee rye, 70%rye, 18% corn and 12% malted.
In the Tennessee Rye the mashbill is of the Jack.
The 20% is Jack Daniel'sTennessee Whiskey, which has a
(34:06):
mash bill of 80% corn, 12% ryeand 8% malted barley, and 20%
Jack Daniel's American Maltwhich, according to this, they
hadn't released.
This is their first ever timeof releasing American Malt which
, according to this, they hadn'treleased.
This is their first ever timeof releasing American Malt and
nobody even knew they did anAmerican Malt and it's 100%
(34:27):
malted barley.
Randy Ford has then informed usthat EH, taylor Barrel Proof oh
, eh, taylor barrel proof, um,secondary, yeah, 200 max.
Um, but most of the time when Ilove actually, the barrel proof
(34:48):
is fantastic, but, um, what Iwanted to say about this is that
the american malt was this isthe first time it was released
into anything in 2022.
It is 2025 now, so they'restill releasing it in this
because this is the newestexpression of the triple mash.
I picked this up just recentlyat the jack daniels distillery.
Was hoping that day there wassome 14, but there was not.
(35:09):
But there you go.
So, folks, um, um, let me knowwhat you think.
I am going to end this oneverybody.
I really appreciate everybodythat's on YouTube, facebook,
watching.
If you guys want to hang out alittle bit afterwards, I can.
We could keep talking, but I'mgoing to end this podcast for
(35:35):
the audio, just remember.
Let's see if I can get this up.
Yeah, it's going to be shorteron the audio because I kind of
blew it.
So am I still recording?
Yes, I'm still recording.
I don't know how I did it, butI did it.
So, everybody, thanks forjoining us.
