Speaker 1 (00:00):
Later.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Oh my goodness, the food looks and smells amazing. I
hope you're hungry. This is this Servis podcast.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Hello and welcome back to Served, where we are serving
you up a ton of great foody suggestions here around Canberra.
I'm Mick Carojuana, your host, not only for this episode
of the podcast, but for this award ceremony. Yes, that's right.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Today, Oh today, of all days, we celebrate some of
Canberra's best business, the cream of the crop. As you
will not in my eyes. I haven't actually made these
awards or picked any nominees, but these are awards that
were handed out the other day to numerous act restaurants, cafes,
caterers and more.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
That are the best in their cuisines. An Amplify CBR
journalist and friend of the podcast, Hannah Donald, has the
full list of winners for us to praise and to
celebrate and have a party. Well done for all the winners.
I've never hosted an award ceremony before, and I'm if
this is my audition, I don't think it's going too well.

(01:04):
I could be better. I promised Logis or Oscars or
whoever wants me to hope. If you want me to
host your awards ceremony, shoot me a message. I would
love to. I promise it would. I'd be a lot
better than this. I could bring the music if you
want it. Also, wouldn't be an episode of Served without
the mention of an international food day, and this one
is Linguini Day, September fifteenth. We've got a list of

(01:27):
the yummiest Italian places for you to go out and
celebrate on the day. That is all on the way
on this episode I've Served. For those of you who
don't know, my background is sports media, which is basically
just sports journalism with a different title. So I somewhat

(01:48):
studied journalism. However, I'm not good at it. So when
I saw the story coming out about the Best Restaurants
award winners here in the act, I thought, no, I'll
get an actual journalist on to help me explain, and
it is a good friend of mine, Hannah Donald from
the Amplified CBR newsroom. Hannah, how are.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
You going, I'm good. Michael, how are you going?

Speaker 1 (02:07):
I'm good. I'm good. Now, before we do get into
this list, though a little bit about you. You're not
originally from Canberra.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
I'm not I'm from Townsville, would not say it's the
foody capital.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
I've never been to Townsville, so I can't confirm nor deny.
But if you're saying that, then it's a no. You
were born in Townsville and then you've gone around the
country basically.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yeah. I went down to a little small town just
south of Geelong called Queenscliffe and I lived there on
and off. I was either there or in Townsville. I
switched about four or five times before I was thirteen.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
So out of those three places, is Camber the best
food wise?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Well? Yeah, yeah. Where I lived in Victoria was close
to Melbourne, so it is a bit of a that
was good, but it was a small town so you
had limited options.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Just remember what sort of podcast camera's the est? Yes, exactly.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
What did you ask me? This was?

Speaker 1 (03:03):
This was a bit I was going to keep all this.
I'm sorry. So we'll run from the top and I'll
go is Canbra the best? And you say yes, Okay,
So Canberra's out of those three, is definitely the best.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
One hundred percent. Yeah, there's just like endless options in
Canberra and they just keep coming.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yeah, but you were so close to Melbourne, when you
were in Geelong.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
I was so close to Melbourne, it was, but where
I lived there were limited options and I was eleven.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Fair, so you can't really do the trip up to Geelong.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah. No, well done. That was a good bit, thank you.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Well, what are your favorite places to eat at here
in Canberra?

Speaker 2 (03:39):
My favorites they're generally pretty much all around the city. Okay,
I if it's lunchtime, I like to go to eighty
twenty or Fresh Something Yummy. Their salmon there is so good.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
You did say the other week. I asked for the
best salads and you did say that eighty twenty. That
will be coming up in a bonus bite episodes soon,
by the way, so you stick around that. You said
one salad from eighty twenty is you'll go.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
To one hundred percent. It's their suit If I'm correct,
I believe it's a super salad. That's the one with
But you have to add the grilled salmon, yeah, which
is fine.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
And the great thing about eighty twenty is that there's
so many different locations around Camber now. They're not just
in one little area, so it depends where you are.
You're probably a stone throw away from them.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
So one eighty twenty or I mean, I just love
a key bar yep is a staple and Amichi bar ohtar.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
I did put a photo of yours up the other
day on the served Instagram page with it was like
a barrada with some tomatoes not mixed in it, but
it was around it.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yes, it looked and had ducker on top as well.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
And yeah, it is very good. My girlfriend has made
me fall in love with barrata.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
As you should and as she should.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah, yes, exactly. It is a glorious cheese. If you've
never tried barrata, what are you doing with your life?
Go and try it as soon as you can. But man,
that one from Amichi.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's so good, and they have such fresh bread with
it and a lot of bread worth it.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Well, that's that's what I sometimes am worried about when
you go and get barata, is you don't have enough bread?

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Well I got it there one time and I ordered
extra bread.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Yeah, too much bread.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
I couldn't eat all the bread.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Oh that's a shame it was.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I've cried.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
You know what you should have done, gotten yourself.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
An extra You're a thinker.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
I'm creating. Yeah, but the problem is because I got
this food podcast. I love all these places. So these
awards that were about to talk about, I wouldn't be
any good at helping select them.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
I want to give them all awards exactly I want them.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
If they aren't getting those participation awards that used to
get when you're playing sport when you're younger, that had
like a little voucher to go to McDonald's, then the
ACT government's doing it wrong. All right. So these are
these awards? What are they? I saw them yesterday.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah. So they're the Restaurant and Catering Awards by host
Plus okay, and they're all for excellence in the Act.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Yeah. Nice.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
So these aren't, like Australia hundred percent the best in
easy tar, but you should be.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
These are the ones that are shining out here in
the nation's capital. Yes, all right. I see that they've
got different sort of categories and you've got your list
over there, So which ones have stood out to you?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Well? And I really hope I'm pronouncing this correctly. I
double checked yesterday. But we'll see. Labistri Num from in
Campbell has one Restaurant of the Year.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Oh wow, congratulations, they.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Have an incredible looking menu. I've never been.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
I've never been either.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
But they're French and they look insanely good. And I
mean Raku's in there.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Raku did get Best Asian Restaurant. And whenever someone comes
to Camber and they ask me, oh, where should I
go and everything, if I say, if you want like
a fine dining sort of experience, Raku is the place
to go. Controversial, I've never actually been meither.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
I've never been either.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
It's on mixed buckal list and I'm going to go,
but I've just never been and I just haven't found
a time to go, so I need to go.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Literally me too. But it's also a lot of sashimi.
I'm not really into that. I know a lot of
people are.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
I am a big sashimi fan. Yeah yeah, well that's
your loss and my game.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
If they cooked it, I'd be there.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Requirements, Hi, what else is there?

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Brunello has won the Best Italian Restaurant Nice Capitol.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Bar and Grill Great Michael Box chef Michael Box does
an incredible steak there. He actually will be a guest
on the podcast in the coming weeks, but we will
dive into both where the best steaks are apart from
Capitol Bar and Grill and the best way to have
a roast.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Well, they actually won two categories. They won Best Restaurant
in a hotel slash Resort and Best Steak Restaurant.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Oh look at him. Go well done, Michael Box.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
We have a few steak restaurants here are specifically for that.
So the fact they won that is very good.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
It is very good to see. I also did see
as well. Shout out to Bunny Bean's Cafe and Holt
for getting breakfast Restaurant of the Year, and Stella's by
the Lake in Belconnon forgetting cafe dining. And if you
go to Stellar's by the Lake and you sit outside
and you get yourself a little coffee, maybe a little
sweet treat, gorgeous view.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
What's the difference between breakfast restaurant and cafe?

Speaker 1 (08:05):
I believe, all right, I don't know. I don't. I
don't do these awards.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Because in my mind breakfast.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Hannah, I'm not too sure. But again, I feel like
they're both deserving of the awards.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
I am proud of both of them.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Yeah, no, they've they've done well. I see. Less how
did you say it again? Less bistron So it's not that.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
You don't pronounce the s. It's like their bistronst m,
bistro Um, bistronm.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Lebistron Um also won Europemian Restaurant of the Year as well,
and Dana in Curtain won Indian Restaurant of the Year,
which will sadly be their last award because they are
shutting up shop very soon. They won a lot of
awards both in Canberra and nationally as well as one
of the best Indian restaurants. Right but I believe let

(08:51):
me just double check.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Well, why are you double check that Lebistronam also won
Best Premium Dining.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
Labistron Arm is doing it all.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
They are killing it.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Yeah. Back to Dana, Yes, they are shunting up shop
very soon, so it will be in the next couple
of months. So if you want to go and try
the best Indian restaurant not only just in Canberra but
one of the best in the country, then make sure
you go and go and book a table because they
do some fabulous stuff. There also a shout out to
the Cupping Room in Civic for being voted the best
flat white in Australia by What if in their uniquely

(09:20):
Australian awards. I like that they won for best flat white,
not best coffee in general, best flat white. They do
flat whites differently and they do it well. There. If
you've never had a coffee from the cupping room before,
you are in for an experience, a uniquely Australian experience,
it seems. Haha. Also shout out to the Ginger group

(09:41):
who won a bunch of different awards as well. And
again leabistron Arm Restaurant of the Year. You know what
that deserves an applause.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Woo woo woo.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yeah, come on, honey, you gotta get into it. Yes,
that's it.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Sorry, I was reading. Oh I can't read and think
at the same time.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Okay, well let's try that again. Okay, And again shout
out to Restaurant of the Year. Yeah, Hanna, thank you
so much for running us through that list. Before you
do go, I do want to talk about it in
this International Food Day. It is September the fifteenth, It

(10:19):
is International Linguini Day.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
That is so exciting.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
It is very exciting. I feel like linguini is a
bit of an underrated pasta. Yeah, you don't see it
too many times on the menu. People more go for
a spag bog and a feti chinie. Funnily enough, before
we recorded this episode the night before we both made
pasta army I did. My parents made it.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
But pastes your parents make spag bowl.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
Can't go wrong with this bag bot, I can't. It's
just the classics in there. Mum cooked it when Dad
normally cooks it, cooks it and he puts a bit
of baking. Does well? What did you cook?

Speaker 2 (10:56):
I cooked carbana and it was very good.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
You didn't do a poor person's carbonar? You went all out?

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Yeah, I did a carbonara for someone who earns a
lot more money than I do. I went and got
a fat piece of panchattar nice and it was. It
was very, very very good, with like fresh pastor as well.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Yeah good? Did you bring some in for leftovers? Today?

Speaker 2 (11:18):
I actually get into my brother to take to work.
I know, don't look at me like that. I was
thinking I should have brought someone for you, but otherwise
he wouldn't have had lunch.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Oh, you're too good of a sister.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Oh, he is twenty six and could get his own lunch.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
As much as our lovely listeners might be sitting there going, guys,
this sounds all well, but I'm not going to be
able to indulge in your carbonara or spag bowl. Where
can I actually go to enjoy Italian in Canberra? Well,
don't worry, keep on listening, because that is what we're
going to talk about right now, some of the best
Italian restaurants in Canberra. Hannah, you have bought your favorites, yes,
and I have bought five different places that actually do

(11:55):
sell linguini. So if you want to celebrate International Linguini
Day by not just getting a pasta, by getting that,
then that's the way to go. Yeah, you start us off.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Okay, Well I love Agastini's, Okay, And if you want
to go there, they're going to be at Floriaard. Oh yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
I have been, and they've been at what's that other
one that is earlier on in the year enlightened, Yes, yeah,
around Enlightened. Yeah, so it was in a different sort
of area. But I don't know if they're doing in.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
The food markets.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah yeah, I think they were doing pizza rather than
past of but still a little set up.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Yeah, well you should better get it a Floriad when
that opens a day after Linguini day.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Oh my god, it is all aligning. This is too good.
One place if you do want to go on the
fifteenth or September before your linguini is Briscola, Italian. They
do two different sort of linguinis. They do a linguini
ricotta and a linguini de mare, which has King Braun's
scollops and muscles in it, along with your other sort

(12:56):
of favorite stuff. I hope that is really that. I'm
going to nail all these because I am now ninety
days strong in my Italian duwe lingo, so there is
a lot of pressure on me to nail all these.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Anyway, Well, your linguini pronunciation, it's beautiful.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Thank you. I have watched a rattatui. Is that Italian?
That's French?

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Oh? Is it?

Speaker 1 (13:15):
I just went with it, idiot.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Another place I love Malto on the Kingston Foreshore, so lovely.
And some of the dishes I like put that put
in the cheese wheel at your table, but I can't
pronounce it. Is it like cauchero pepe? That one that's
the one yep, yeah, that you go to. Well, I've
only been there twice, okay, And I've gotten it both

(13:40):
like both times.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Well, maybe next time you go. Because Malto Italian is
actually on my list as well, because they do a linguini.
It is a linguini gone Grancio. It is again all
your favorite linguini stuff with blue swimmer crab. I saw
a photo of it. Gorgeous, okay, and maybe they could
do it in.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
The cheese will I'll be there on the fifties.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
I feel like they need to. I feel like it.
Another one as well is Mezzalira. They do a squid
ink linguini, which I like the sound of.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
I do like squid in.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Yeah, A lot of people don't, but it's it's fun.
It changes the pasta's color. Just have a little bit
of fun.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Yeah. I actually spilt it on my white shirt last
time I had it. No, so don't do that.

Speaker 1 (14:18):
Yeah, wear an apron, but eat it for sure.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
Just don't wear it.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
You haven't sold me on that, Hanner.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Sorry.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Do you have any other places on your list?

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yes? All of these places, I just like I can't pronounce.
I mean, I think it's Chez Frederic yep in Breton.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Love, that's like my go to you pasta place and
you get like pretty good portions for pretty cheap. So
love there, and we're only other places meet you. But
which already said if.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
It's a fan favorite, of course it's going to be
on the best Italian list.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Yes, and you can have your apparol spirits. I had
a Lemonchello spirits there last weekend.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
I do love me a lemon Cillo.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
It was amazing with pizza.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
My last place is a place that has two different locations.
On both locations they've got two different linguinis, so it
is blue cheese. They've got Manica and they've got Woden.
In Monica, they've got an Italian sausage mince linguini, which
looks very nice. But Woden is where I am loving it,
and I'm worried I'm going to buger up this pronunciation.

(15:16):
So due lingo. This is all pressures on. It is
the linguini, Aglio oleo Gambria, damn it, the linguini. It
is prawn olive oil, and yes, prawn and olive oil.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
And it's what I translated.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
Well done, thank you. It looks good as well. I
do love that a lot of them are seafood based.
Big fan of seafood in pasta in general. But I
also like that Baluchis in Manica do an Italian sausage one.
So if you hate your seafood but you want to
celebrate Linguini Day to the fullest, then Baluchi's in Manica
is your way to go. I do want to also

(15:55):
give a shout out to Italian and Sons. It has
been on Mixed bucket list since since day dot and I.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Still have my bucket list too.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
I've just never been, and I need to go because
it looks beautiful. I know Amber is, you know, chomping
at the bit to go.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
You have to take her there.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
I do, but again I've I've just updated mix bucke list.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
They have Linguini.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
No, they don't have Linguini.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Oh you can't go on the fifteenth hmm?

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Could I do pasta for lunch and dinner? Obviously breakfast?

Speaker 2 (16:27):
I mean I love pastoral times.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
A day, but they won't be open for breakfast.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
Open for you?

Speaker 1 (16:34):
Hey? Are you Italian? The Sons been lovely having you
here in the studio with me today. Thank you so
much for coming in. You're a longtime listener, but your
first time on the potty so welcome.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Any chance to talk about pasta.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
I'm there, okay, so if there is another international past.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Today, yeah, otherwise, don't bother talking to me.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Oh okay. Well that's our friendship over okay, and that's
the episode over see's next week.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
Well that's it. You filled up on all the food content.
