At Spirit Fest USA in Dulles, Virginia, we sat down with Vanessa Anseloni from the Spiritist Society of Virginia for a conversation that bridged neuroscience, spirituality, and service to humanity. What we discovered was a movement dedicated to teaching, healing, and inspiring...rooted in Spiritism, a philosophy and science exploring our nature, origins, and destiny as immortal beings.

Vanessa, a neuroscientist and psychologist, shared how the Society blends rigorous study with heart-centered practice, offering free programs for children, teens, and adults. From lessons on emotional intelligence to outreach for the homeless in Washington, D.C., their mission is grounded in compassion and inclusivity, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds.

We dive deep into:
  • What Spiritism really is and how it connects the physical and spiritual realms
  • The groundbreaking MRI research revealing the “spiritual brain”
  • Why mastering your emotional intelligence is essential before deep spiritual work
  • The Society’s powerful outreach programs, and why kids play a central role
  • Mediumship in your DNA: the science and history behind this innate human gift
  • How Spiritist Parenting, Kardec Radio, and the Spiritist Magazine are helping spread light globally
Along the way, Vanessa shares fascinating stories, like asking her spirit guides for help during her master’s degree exams, and waking with exactly the information she needed. We also explore how Spiritist lessons for children (including wisdom from Benjamin Franklin’s 13 virtues!) are shaping the next generation of compassionate, conscious leaders.

This episode is a reminder that spirituality isn’t about abandoning reason; it’s about aligning the mind and heart to better serve yourself, your community, and the world.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Things are getting really hot heavy here at spirit past
USA in Dallas Expo or yeah, Dallas Expo Center in Chantilly, Virginia.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
We now have Vanessa and Soloney Yes, yes.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Yes, got it right, from the Spirit Society of Virginia.
We've got to talk to her because this is incredible.
Many questions, yes, okay, So let's start from the very
very beginning. What is a Spirit Society of Virginia. Sorry,
Spiritual Society Virginia.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Yes, spiritual sort of Virginia, psycho spiritual center where we
study about our immortality, reincarnation, medium ship. We teach children, teens, adults.
We do reach out outreach programs. We do charitable actions
as well. And we are the sponsors of the Spiritist Magazine,

(00:54):
which is a magazine that has been international for seventeen years.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
Wow. Yes.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
We have Kardek Radio, which is our international radio that
has been happening for fourteen years.

Speaker 5 (01:05):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
And we have our publisher which is going to turn
a year this year.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
Oh congratulations, that's fantastic.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
You picked a very easy mission.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
Huh, No, work it all, no work at all.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah. So what led you to start the society?

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Well, actually I come from a Spiritist family. I was born,
so became an American. I've been in the US for
twenty seven years and we have a more dense one
hundred year old Spiritist center in Brazil that is like
a whole block.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
So what exactly is spiritist? What does that mean? It
comes from spiritism.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
It's the science that explains our nature, our origin, and
our destiny as immortal spirits and our connection with the
spiritual the physical realm. So it started in Friends in
eighteen fifty seven with Kardec and it spread to the world.
Brazil is nowadays the greatest spiritist Like there has more

(02:14):
people the spiritists in the world, but it's spread out.
It's fantastic, various countries and we practice mediumship. The difference
is that everything is free. We're all volunteers, one hundred
percent volunteer based. So we have our professions. Like for me,
I am a neuroscientist, I am a psychologist. I have
my profession and everything we do is in our off time.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Right.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Wow, yeah, Krry, she hit the hot spot for me.
You know which one? I have a feeling neuroscientists, right.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
That is such a cool like dichotomy, but neuroscience and
metaphysics or spirituality not something that typically go hand in
hand together.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
But more more.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
It is more so, how did you find yourself to
this as a neuro scientist, I know.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
Is there a connection between the brain and the soul?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Science cannot say that because for science, desult doesn't exist.
You know, because for science, desault doesn't exist. Because science
you have to you say that. I know, because I'm
an between.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
The brands right now. But you're right. Science has to
show results.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Predictably, right. You have to have measurable results that can
be done again and again and again. And for this
type of work, it's not possible. You can't have measurable
results that have different paradigm.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
In now our credit radio shows, we've interviewed several people,
amongst them like you don't know Bird the the are
scientists who actually at Penn State University and then later
at Thamas Jefferson University, he researched, He did mr studies
on mediums. He brought mediums from Brazil who are spiritists,

(04:06):
and he compared to other types of mediums, and he
compared to people who are what unquote not mediums because
at the end of the day, we know everybody's a medium.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
But well, I'm actually an extra laarge.

Speaker 4 (04:16):
You know.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
I'm sorry, Daniel Jackson, I stole your joke.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
So he show what happens to the brain. So in
his studies he shows that we have a spiritual brain.
He wrote a book about it.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
We have a spiritual brain, we have a spiritual intelligence.
We need to take care of it. But people don't.
So true, that's very tit. But as a psychologist, I
would say, before working on your spirituality, you need to
work on your emotions, your emotional intelligence.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
You can't really reach that.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Level of spirituality without taking care of your emotions.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
Well doesn't that makes sense?

Speaker 5 (04:58):
Because if you're having all these hectic thoughts and anxiety
and fear, and that's all taking feeling up your head
too much.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
For example, I'm a medium. If I don't know how
to hear my emotions, I'm going to connect what kind
of spirits I'm not gonna connect to.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
The not good ones?

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Do I need to fix that? Organize myself my emotions.
As I tell my daughter, your mind is like a
photo album. You think it's like vivid images.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
So whatever you're thinking, it is making connections and those
connections will lead to associations that will either lead you
to progress or hinder you.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
That's amazingly profound, it is.

Speaker 5 (05:45):
It's so simple, yes, so deep and complex at the
same time.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
It really is so.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Gosh. How does someone come to terms with.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Because we talked about if you are trying to move
in this direction, then your mind's outright, you're going to
you're going to bring up the wrong side of the fence,
for lack of a better term. Right, So how does
someone we talk we've heard about shadow work and all
that kind of stuff. How does someone get to the
point and when do they know that they're at a
point where they can safely move forward with spiritualism.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
Okay, so let's talk about our emotions. We need to
know ourselves in our main book, the spiritual book. Here,
we have a whole booth filled with books. People need
to instruct themselves. People think so spiritual, I just need
to meditate. No no, no, no no.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
We need to connect our reasoning with our feelings to
align ourselves. So when you instruct yourself, like question nine
hundred and nineteen of the spiritualk by card ag, how
am I going to progress without making mistakes? The answer

(07:01):
of the Good Spirits was self knowledge, so like here
so many opportunities for us to learn more about ourselves.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
Who are we? Once I get to know of who
I am, then I can make choices more consciously and
can walk with our ardent angels, connect with spirit guides.
I tell my daughter and the kids in our center, say, look,
every night when you go to sleep, you can ask

(07:34):
your guarden angel to take you to the spiritual realm.
You can learn things. Next day. If you have a test,
you're gonna be better off. I'll give you an example myself.
When I was applying for my master's degree before my PhD,
I was studying so hard. I had a two day
test to pass to both through the application process interviews.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Except right it was midnight. I couldn't study anything. So
I went to sleep. Before I slept, I asked the
good spirits, can I keep studying the spiritual realm. I'm
not asking to be to be a cheater or anything.
Can I continue because my body needs to rest? Said sure,

(08:24):
So I slept, woke up at six am. First thing
when I woke up, they showed me forgot to study
this paragraph. Go to the book study because that's gonna
be a question on this I got the test.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
It was right.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
So it's kind of cheating in a way though, right,
fair point, fair point. So you've got a bunch of
magazines in your e laugh. So we gotta I gotta
call him out because so here's.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
The gorgeous and we have special articles, especially when about
mediumship in the genes from a group of psychiatrists who
showed first hand how we have specific genes expressing our
ability as mediums.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
So they researched on people who are mediums and who
are not so called mediums. They did the whole study
and they showed you and our mRNA studies that there
are some genes that are specifically lighting up for people
who are mediums.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
So then what you're saying is that you're either a
medium or you're not from because in your genes.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
Yes, so your medium as you're born. There's no such things.
I became a medium. No, you didn't know you were,
but you were.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
But are you saying that that's in everyone's DNA?

Speaker 3 (09:50):
In everyone's And Cardek said that in eighteen sixty one
when you published a medium's book.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
He said, it's an organic thing. Mediumship is in the body.
So if you're a medium, your daughter, potentially maybe a meddle.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
So I actually that brings me to the question I was.
You said, you do you teach children? Yes, and you
do outreaches. And I opened this to what I think
I needed to see, and it was teens. As I say,
teens write advice messages to punch Spilot.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
And we have a teen.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
I can tell you what they're saying. Don't do it, bunches,
don't do it, I said.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
I Actually, they said, you have got talk to him.
He can't. He has something to teach you. M. So
this is a study that we've been doing here. This
is here with us.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
She's one of the dcators as well, teaching a book
about Jesus time. It's a mid domestic book through the
medium the Brazilian medium Chiku Chavir two thousand years ago.
So the spirit who used to be a sanatory back
then we met. Spilot talks about the whole story. And
there is one lessing in which we asked them, what

(11:04):
if you would like to write a letter to some
of these people, who would you choose?

Speaker 4 (11:08):
They choose punctions Pilot.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Interesting, Wow, I like this.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
Listen to Olivia. She knows Jesus is innocent Oh my gosh,
this is wonderful, and this program be came to publish.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
We actually came to publish other books for kids as well,
other books for kids, all.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
Especially, for example, all the Fox Sisters in the United States.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
He already knows about it northeast of New York, the
famous story of the Fox Sisters.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
And here we have a book that tells about it,
and we have a trilogy by.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
Our dear. It's a an astronaut. He doesn't want to
say his name, and he says, call me astronaut. James
came to teach children about charity. So he palls Charity
Planet the planet Charity, and he leads them to a
journey to Galilee to teach about the special places where
Jesus stopped and what he did to teach little kids

(12:15):
about it. And these i special ones from another spirit author.
It's a poem by Chris Walney about the lightingness.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
So this is very special to me right now because
when we so with New Reality, what we do is
we gather content partners from literally all over the world,
from Thailand to Portugal to the UK to everywhere, and
they create these these shows, which essentially are these beautiful messages.
And I've always said it's like everyone's holding out their
little light, their candle in the darkness, and it's beautiful.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
But you can only eliminate a little space.

Speaker 5 (12:52):
So we plan or we our goal with New Reality
TV is to gather all of these candles together to
create this big, beautiful beacon of life and love that
people can't help see and that they'll be drawn to.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
That's beautiful.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
We need it, definitely, Definitely, that's very good. For example,
that's act example.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Yes it is, so, I see there's a there's a
very concerted effort focus on educating kids.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Yes, so is that? Would you say that's the main
mission of the society, Yes, it is.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Okay, we have lots of adults, but our main mission,
right Daisy, are the kids.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Every Wednesday when we have our medianistic meetings, the spirit educators,
the educators of the Beyond come.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
They're the ones who will lay out the books, the programs.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
And soon we're going to release a new website with
all the lesson plans that we have, especially one for
US Americans from Ben Franklin and he's thirteen Virtues have
lesson planned teaching kids That about the thirteen virtual program
that he created when he was twenty years old. Wow,

(14:04):
people talk about being friendly, they talk about death in Texas, about.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
Time is money, but the most important thing they don't talk.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
About the virtues. Yeah right, yeah, no.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
So it's great because you are helping to shape the
minds of the young when they're young, so that when
they grow older they are adults that already have this
in their toolkit and can live like the right way
and help others to live like.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
They're getting it from the beginning.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
Yes, and you see so many of the problems that
we have is because children are learning other values I
guess you could call them that are necessarily those of
love and light and virtue. So I think if you
instill this at a young age, it spreads like wildfire exactly.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
And our kids come with us to DC. We have
a special license. We are the only organization who has
a license in d C to do outreach programs for
the beggars and the homeless in the Franklin Park and
the Much Person Square, and our kids they come as

(15:09):
early as a parent want. They come to give them food,
to pray with them, to talk with them, and to
learn that there is more to life than just ourselves.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
Fantastic gods one fantastic and then your radio show that
you have her or where it's done on the it's
a digital no, no.

Speaker 4 (15:30):
No, we have an app. Okay, we have an app
for car radio KA RDC Radio. We have an app
twenty four seven.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
And we also have an app for the Spiritist Magazine,
which is free of charge.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
We have sixty nine issues.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
They're available for Pinko to read the magazine digitally if
they want. And we also have another effort of our
Spiritu Society is the Spiritist Parenting supporting parents.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
Yes we are.

Speaker 4 (16:01):
You have your ful daughter here with you.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
This is so unique, how important it is to support
parents in their mission. It's called Spiritist Parenting. It's a
free app as well. Everything we do is free. Everyone
who works with us is volunteer. One hundred percent volunteer based.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
That's amazing.

Speaker 4 (16:21):
Therefore one hundred percent.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
And all we want to do is really support people
in their family, restoring the values of family, God in
the family, true spirituality, all embracing no no prejudices, no boundaries.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
One world together.

Speaker 5 (16:42):
So that actually just sparked the question what about people
that have different religious beliefs.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
They're being kind a place with you, yeah, perfect, Yes,
Actually the effort we started in the Sea more than.

Speaker 4 (16:57):
Twelve years ago.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
It started in our partnership with the Escenes in Bethesda.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (17:05):
Yes. We also have lots of collaborations with Spiritualists up north,
and when we founded the Spiritists out of Baltimore twenty
seven years ago before I came to Virginia and it's
still there, the Spiritists out of Baltimore. We have lots
of collaborations with Jewish friends like Sohara am I Hof

(17:26):
in Baltimore, Maryland. She is one of our strongest supporters
and ministers from Unity Churches and other churches as well.
So we welcome my from mine and I love that
so much. And places like Spiritfest where you have all
of these different people.

Speaker 5 (17:43):
I think it's so important to know that you don't
you can be Christian, you can be Jewish, you can
be whatever, and this space is not exclusive. We welcome everybody,
and I think ultimately we've had some of our content
partners say that they've worked with people, and in particular
So she worked with a Muslim. Oh, gentlemen, he was
very he didn't he had to do it for work.

(18:05):
She was helping a corporate route setting and he did
not want to be involved. But at the end of
their week, he came up to her and said, you
have made me a better mustard. Yes, you know, or
I can practice you know, my my religion more holy
because of you. And that's what I love about this. Yes,
it just helps you to be better whatever you are,
whoever you are. This environment, this atmosphere helps you to

(18:28):
be better.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
I agree with you.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
I feel so good to be here and we are
at a critical time on Earth in which we're making
good choices. The choice to be tolerant, understanding together, that's
the only choice we have to really move forward.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Thank you so much for what you're doing. It's such
an important mission. You really appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (18:55):
We have a wonderful group. Yeah, wonderful.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
Knowing that that it's all free and everyone to volunteer
says a lot, says a lot. So thank you for
what you're doing. Thank you for what you're doing.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Uh and uh my express gratitude to everyone involved with
the society because that's an amazing thing that you're doing.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
So thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
If someone wanted to get involved with society, how can
is there a way for them to get involved with you?

Speaker 3 (19:17):
Well, the kids contact us at either CARDEC great with
the Spiritist magazine or the Spirit Start of Virginia and
contact us and we go from there.

Speaker 4 (19:25):
And what is your website? Says Virginia dot org.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
Okay to Virginia dot org. You heard it here first,
all right, Thank you so much for joining us again
