Speaker 1 (00:37):
Anchors up sells it for home sept I'm gonna take that, lay, Jared,
how old are you?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
All right?
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Whoda? I don't know why I had the instinct to
read the same.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Well, there's not.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Actually believe in with me vaking the noise. This is
the second episode of before of them still working on
the same good. I don't even know if me faking
the noise gets the old noise gate, to be honest
with you, but you know what, It's fine, Kyle.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
It is time.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
It is time to get to know our enemies.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Who are the.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
M It's Texas Longhorns, So let's get right into it. Yeah.
Seven months later and we're back, Well, not exact team,
same same laundry, same laundry. Well, instead of playing in
in in Texas, they're coming up to Ohio to play
this one this time. Yeah, they sure are. Here's the thing, though,
(01:49):
it's it's really hard to beat a team like this twice.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
It is.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
We've talked about it.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
I mean, ask Oregon last year. It's really tough to
be a team twice. And the good thing for Ohio
State it's a new season. Yeah, so maybe it doesn't
count as beating a team twice, new season, new coordinators.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
It is.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, we have tape on their quarterback. They don't have
tape on our quarterback. I'll say that much. Which all
of this like we have new coordinators and they don't
have tapes. They don't have tape on our quarterback. This
is all like hard kopium. I think, like, oh, yeah,
we had to replace both of our coordinators and our
(02:35):
quarterback doesn't have any experience. Watch us twist that and
do a good thing.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
Ah.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
But yeah, I'm I'm not. I'm not going into this
game super optimistic.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
I think both both teams you can say that too.
There's a lot of departures on both sides. On both teams, sure,
both sides.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Of the ball. Yeah, I mean you could definitely look
at all how State with the coordinators especially not being there,
look at that as maybe the disadvantage for Ohio State.
But I mean you look at some of the recent
news from from both teams. Here, Texas out with their
(03:20):
left tackle and potentially the right tackle, we'll see game
time decision.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
There reports out there that their right tackle broke his
hand and potentially is a game time decision. That's interesting
on how breaking a hand and you can still play,
especially at a offensive line position there I might that'd
(03:51):
be very tough to do.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
I mean, you're not supposed to hold anyway.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Right, there's holding in every play, Jared, there's holding an every.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Kyle I used to I used to play offensive line.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
I know they're there.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
You you Holding is part of it. It's just not
It's not a matter of not holding. It's a matter
of where you hold on the jersey, I understand. But
from like, especially from a pass protection standpoint, if you're grabbing,
you've already lost. If you're grabbing, you've already lost, at
least from a pass protection standpoint, at least at tackle
mm hm, fair run blocking. That is a little bit different.
(04:30):
That's a little bit different. But yeah, we up on
the screen right now. We have key players on the offense,
key players on the defense, and they're statistics from last season.
Of course, it's week one, so we only have last
year statistics. We don't have any of this year statistics yet, obviously,
(04:50):
but here they are. Last year number two defense in
the country as far as points allowed, Number war in
the country, as far as yards allowed, Number one passing
defense in the entire country.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Last year yards pass.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
That's that's really what matters the most in my opinion.
Yards per game they did drop down the seventh, but
I think yards per past is probably the most telling.
Really good on third downs is a defensive unit. It
was odd how bad Texas was offensively in the red zone. Yeah,
(05:34):
I mean yeah, quite frankly, their offense wasn't Their offense
was not like great last year. It was obviously good.
I don't think anyone would say it was bad, but
they had a lot of running issues and viewers just
(05:57):
never lived up to the hype that was attributed to him.
And Manning will have the reins now. And he looked
good when he played. I don't last year because he
did play a decent amount last year. I wouldn't say
he looked fantastic when he played. He looked good, and
(06:19):
those were his first couple starts, like it would it
would probably be more newsworthy if he had played fantastic.
My biggest thing coming into this game this year is
just the motivating factor of like Ohio State wins the
(06:43):
National Championship game, and no matter how motivated you attempt
to remain like one team got knocked out of the
playoffs and have been stewing on that all year, all
off season, that is, and that to me is a
(07:04):
motivating factor that you simply can't manufacture. On the other side,
you simply cannot, no matter how self driving, no matter
how self motivating the players are, no matter what Ryan
Day and coach Mick and everyone did to create motivation,
(07:31):
you cannot manufacture the motivation of getting to play the
team that knocked you out of the playoffs in Week
one the next year. They have better continuity coming back
on their coaching staff. They have better continuity coming back
on their offense, especially since, like I said, Manning actually
has real snaps under his belt. They have a good
(07:55):
wide receiving corps, they have Archie Manning. I'm not particularly
afraid of their running game, but they have. They have
an incredibly solid defense coming back. I think this is
a competitive game. I think it's a game that can
(08:17):
go either direction. Like it very very easily can go
either direction. This just might be a who gets the
bounce at the end of the game, who gets the
good or bad call from the refs. It really could
come down to that.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Yeah, I agree with a lot that you said.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
There there are wide receivers I think it is better.
That would be better than last year. Whisner doesn't doesn't
scare me all that much on the ground in the
passing game, absolutely, yeah. I think in the he's definitely
been a playmaker whenever the viewers threw it to him.
(09:03):
Forty four receptions last year from Wisner. Then it didn't
really get to see the end zone that much last year,
only sixteen eachdowns. He averaged right around four and a
half yards per carry all all season. As like your
main running back, like that's yeah, that's I would expect
(09:27):
that to be maybe a little bit higher as a
starting running back at Texas there right, like looking at
the past few games here, two point seven against Ohio State,
two point five against Arizona State, two point seven against Georgia.
That's not going to get it done.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
That's not going to get it done on the.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Ground there as a team, they were sixty ninth in
the country rushing yards per game, sixty fourth per rush,
like they were bottom half or close to it as
a as a running offense last year.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
And then you're out with one, possibly two of your
starting running backs. We're not running offensive lineman. That doesn't
that doesn't bode too well in terms of both the
rushing and the.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Pass protection there.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Yeah, Esquire's demanding to see Archie Manning's birth certificate down
in the chat. Is arch short for Archibald, arch Mandius Archimedes.
I don't know, man It might it might just be Archie,
although Archibald probably makes more sense. They do have They
(10:43):
do have a transfer Jack Andrees from cow our tight end.
Our tight end transfer is better ours is Yes.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Fifty six receptions over six hundred yards and only two touchdowns.
Plaint maybe to keep an eye out on, of course,
like young quarterbacks loving tight ends. Week one, definitely something
to keep an eye out for.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Defense.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Defensively here, they got a lot of They got a
lot of players back. Colin Simmons is back, Anthony Hill junior,
you know, Lafu is back, Uh, Jalen is back, Michael
Uh and the safety is back as well. A lot
of playmakers defensively for Texas. And we saw and we
(11:33):
saw in the in the game against Ohio State. State
did many times during the game struggled to move the ball,
and rightfully so, I think Texas Texas was an extraordinary
defensive team last year. Yeah, and they're returning a lot
of key players. Definitely, Definitely, I think Texas is scary
(11:54):
on the defensive defensive side than offensive this year for me.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
Yeah and yeah, absolutely. And when it comes down to it,
and this this sucks to say. I really wish I didn't.
I really wish I wasn't about to say this, But
this is gonna come down to like how Ready is saying, Yeah,
I mean that that sucks because he's a red shirt
(12:21):
freshman quarterback starting in his first game, not just starting
in his first game, but these are going to be
his first like competitive snaps ever at the collegiate level,
and he's about to play against the number one team
in the country and that's listen, congrats to him, Like
(12:42):
it would be huge if that's not too big for him,
because in all likelihood that's just going to be too
big for him. That's that's a huge order. That's a
huge ask on a red shirt freshman quarterback getting his
first serious starts at the collegiate level. If he's actually
able to rise to that, that'll be a pleasant surprise.
(13:03):
Like it's it should not be the expectation that he
is able to rise to that occasion, because not again,
this is the Texas is the number one team in
the country, rightfully so in my opinion, and like, yeah,
you do get you do get to play at home.
That's nice, but they are the Texas squad has to
(13:28):
be geared, absolutely geared, knowing that they have a revenge
game for the past seven months, like that's it just
feels a little too big. It all feels a little
too big, not not just for saying, but for a
team that is replacing a lot of starters this year.
(13:52):
And this is this is why I've been I've said
it several times during the off season. I don't expect
Ohio State to win this game. And for what it for,
for what it matters, it doesn't matter Like if Ohio
State gets blown out in this game, that would matter.
I don't think that'll happen. For the record, Yeah, but
Ohios they can lose this game, and as long as
(14:13):
they don't look terrible, as long as they don't get
blown out, as long as they don't embarrass themselves, it
won't matter. No, Nope, Playoff Committee is not gonna hold
a less than ten point loss in Week one against
number one team in the country against the High State.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Agreed, I got I've got.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Some interesting numbers in terms of first start for high
state quarterbacks, and now we'll give those stats after our
first ad break.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
Here.
Speaker 2 (14:43):

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Back, Okay, Kyle, Now when when you give us first
time O highest state quarterback starters? Yeah, so last year's Howard,
please please be sure to tell us who they played.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Uh yeah, that's that's a that's a that's a good.
That's a that's a good.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
That's a good note to add in there.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
So yeah, so let's start.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Let's start back in twenty eighteen, Haskins played at Oregon State.
Played Oregon State. Uh huh three four, three D and
thirteen yards in five touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Yep, pretty pretty good.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Now he was he a red was he a red
shirt freshman?
Speaker 3 (15:52):
He wasn't?
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Okay, was was Oregon State even kind of ranked?
Speaker 4 (15:59):
No?
Speaker 2 (15:59):
But I'm going to move move on just for the
sake of time. Here Uh, justin justin fields. His first time,
he threw two hundred thirty four yards and four touchdowns
against Florida Atlantic. Okay Atlantic Ward? Now moving forward?
Speaker 3 (16:18):
Uh is CJ. Stroud his first his first.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Game, he was a red shirt freshman. Two hundred and
ninety four yards and four touchdowns. Okay against your golden
govers Steward. Okay, I mean that's that's the most impressive
line so far.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
That's better.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
And then McCord Minnesota ranked No. None of these were
McCord two years ago. Two hundred and thirty nine yards
Okay against Indiana.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
How many touchdowns did he had? He had no touchdowns?
Speaker 2 (16:55):
Two hundred thirty nine yards.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
That that's that's not fantastic and that was not It's
Indiana was still Indiana at that point.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
And then and then the last one last year, Howard
first time at a first time starting at Ohio.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
State through.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Starter and three touchdowns. But that is it that those
are those are the numbers there, and we're gonna with that.
We're gonna go and move into our sloop stairs, Jared,
We're gonna talk about We're gonna talk about us some uh,
some players to watch here and give our key matchups
(17:37):
and our final score. All right, so we'll start with
Ohio State player to watch. I think you kind of
hint it at it Jared earlier. Earlier in this episode,
it's it's got to be Julian sand the play. The
play you're to watch is Julian saying that's I think
that's that's the correct answer here. Yeah, I'd like to
(18:01):
select the Cgius Round opening game package, please. I mean,
it's the most fair comparison only because he was at
least playing a power of what we would have called
at the time of Power five team and him Stroud
a freshman. His second game, okay was against Oregon, Okay,
(18:27):
and he threw four four hundred and eighty four yards
and three touchdowns against Oregon. Okay, But that that that
was not a good Oregon team. We're we're we're in between.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Good. They were ranked twice, they were ranked twelve at
that time, okay, and it felt like a struggle. Well,
we had game, we had defensive issues. That that that
team had defensive issues. That wasn't done Stroud.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
All right, you got for your player to watch Jared.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Ill on the defensive side.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Either either like your Ohio State player to watch. Oh
I already said it's saying, okay, enemy, any.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
Player to watch? Who do you have for Texas?
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Who's the one player to keep an eye out for.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
I could give a lot of places. I think I
can go with Anthony Hill at linebacker. You just leader
of that defense Ohio State. I think Ohio State is
probably gonna need to They need at least three touchdowns.
And that's with I say at least three touchdowns. That's
also me saying with a few field goals sprinkled on top,
(19:47):
like I they they need, they need like at least
thirty one points. I think to win this football game,
and that's going to be difficult.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
I have.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
I know we were kind of.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Talking lowly of him, but I think I think if
Texas is going to win, it's going to be on
the backs of him. I think it's a contrivion. Wisner
the running back, Okay be a playmaker on both the
running I think more so on the passing side. He
caught six passes for forty two yards against Ohio State
(20:28):
in the Cotton Bowl.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Maybe that's just kind of.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
Preview of what we'll see this weekend here. Get more
more success thrown to him than on the ground, because
he had seventeen touches on the ground for forty six yards.
Not great, Paul, So no, Yeah, I think if Texas
is going to have success, we will see bigger numbers
(20:53):
from Wisner. All right, And the key matchup here to me,
to me, Jared, I think the key matchup it's Ohio
State's defensive line versus Texas offensive line. How well, how
well can Ohio States defensive line get pressure on Manning
(21:15):
stop Wizner? And yeah, I think I think that, Yeah,
got to rattle him, make him uncomfortable because mann Manning's
Manning's going to get.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Happy feet here.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
He's rushed the ball quite a few times in the
limited playing that he had last year, and he still
he still ran the ball. He had four touchdowns on
the ground as a backup quarterback. Maybe we'll see we'll
see him, uh see him more on more on scrambling
plays here. Yeah, introduce him, to introduce him to our linebackers.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Ryan Day did say Jared that he feels confident in
a five man defensive tackle rotation.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Okay, Uh, yeah, I mean I can see that.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
I can see Donald Houston Smith, Junior Malone and Carter.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Yeah, that's that makes sense to me.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Mm hmm yeah, all right, who do you got for
your key matchup?
Speaker 1 (22:21):
Jared Key matchup? I'm gonna have Arch versus the Ohio
State Secondary.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
Hmm okay, all right.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Uh hinted a little bit in our previous episode. If
you haven't listened to that, check out yesterday's episode.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Ohiowa State favored in this game by two and a
half points.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Jared and myself are picking the underdog, while.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Our guest picker Buck Esquire.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Has picked Ohio State and I will start with him.
And he has a few sentences here.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
About the matchup. Here, he says, we've never been more back.
Time to drive Sark back to the bottle. Arch has
met Leithan Ransom. Time to introduce him to Arvel Reese.
OSU takes an instant classic at home twenty seven to
(23:23):
twenty two. And what do you have as the final score?
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Jared with you.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Saying that Texas will cover next, I have Texas both
covering and winning. I have Texas twenty seven, Ohio State
twenty four.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
All right, I'm hoping to get a few little brownie
points back from the check because I got some I
got some boo birds earlier. I do have Texas covering,
but I have Ohio State winning twenty one to twenty.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
One.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
It's funny, that's a low scorer at.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
You got two young quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
You got it.
Speaker 1 (24:09):
Week one gonna you're gonna see some some rough times.
You're going to see some mental mistakes. I think I
think it could be low scoring. Who scores in the
last scenario, Oh, you're throwing a curveball here? You know what,
just just there's an easy answer to that.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
Just nice, a nice one on one matchup to the
corner of the end zone.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
To JJ of course. Yeah, yeah, there's with with just
over with just over three, with just.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
Over three minutes left in the game, defense and time
on the Kyle, I know, but the defense stands up tall,
it makes a stop, alright, giving a high State the
ball back in to run the time? All right, all right,
all right, okay, Kyle? Is that is that is that
(25:08):
the show? Did we do it? Uh?
Speaker 4 (25:11):
That is?
Speaker 2 (25:11):
We do have a little bit of time left here.
If there's anything else that you want to you want.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
To talk about or cover here, I think I think
again I've said it. I'll say it one more time.
I think the big factor here is just the the
the motivation imbalance there. It's it's just incredibly difficult to
(25:37):
manufacture the type of motivation that Texas is just going
to or uh organically have. I almost said origami, Like,
no kidding, I almost said orgonically that they had that
that Texas organically has. It's just you got knocked out
of Ohio. You got Ohio State knocked you out of
the playoffs last year, and you've had the entire season,
(26:00):
the entire offseason since then to prepare for this game.
Just revenge minded. And like I said, as long as
Ohio State stays close and it stays competitive and it's
not some big blowout, which I don't think it will be,
I think it'll be fine. As far as the Ohio State,
(26:20):
it's long term playoff and national title hopes. You know,
it might cost you the number one seed, but it's
not gonna cost you the playoff spot and it's not
going to hurt you at all from a big ten standpoint.
So I do think Ohio State loses, but I also
don't think it will be a big deal. Yeah, overall,
(26:41):
it's not gonna be a big deal as long as
it's not a not as long as it's not a blowout.
And I just don't see that because of how just
how talented Ohio State is here, Heartline would be in
the box, per per Ryan Day here, m h, he
will be. I mean you have to, I don't. I
(27:02):
think a coordinator has to be up in the box
that or they have to have a trusted co coordinator
in the box on their behalf, you know what I mean.
But I think you need a coordinator up in the box. Yeah,
just you're too big of a disadvantage not seeing things
from up there, having desk space in front of you,
(27:26):
with the play sheets, just that level of like emotional
separation to be able to think calmly and rationally. I
being up in the booth as a play caller, I
think is just a huge, huge deal. Yep.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
And with the and with the helmet communications now it
will make make his job a little bit easier now.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Too, because it makes.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
I see yeah, uh, and in his first time as
the offensive coordinator, I know he was on the sideline
and with with Day there, yeah, I do remember like
Day vaguely mentioning about like wanting heart Line there to
help kind of guide him and help make make different
(28:13):
kind of substitutions as well too. But sure, once once
I'm up in the up in the booth and I think,
I think that's the that's the right call. Yeah, yeah,
I mean when when Heartline had his first stinted offensive coordinator,
you know, that was two seasons ago. They was still
calling the place, they was still calling the plays.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
And when they brought in, uh, chip Kelly last year,
everyone knew it was a there was probably gonna be
a one year's stay at Ohio State, and it was
understood that that was the case, and it was understood
that was a big part of chip Kelly's job to
get Heartline ready.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
Brian Hartlines now had the opportunity to learn under both
Ryan Day and Chip Kelly. So you know, I know,
his first into the offensive coordinator wasn't fantastic, but you
have to give people an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
To learn and to grow.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
And they also there were other challenges on that offense
beyond Brian Hartline on the offensive line at quarterback. You know, yeap,
all right, And I think with that we'll go ahead
and uh we'll go and end that episode here, Jared,
so go ahead and as I bring in.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Our legally not brutus. Uh, we'll go here.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Orenstown, Wrenstown. Yeah, Uh, anything you want for Kyle's corner
or are we just nope? All right? Once again, tonight's
ending music will be brought to you by the new
Bomb Turks. So with all that being said, I'd like
encourage everyone to drink local beer, listen to local music,
and of course ports podcast. Once agains.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
If I had a brad he said he was not
asy more than the average market. He said he was
forgiven a real dem Well, I said that was just
on wader. Paul would con the audience of child said
he's been paid. Take on a here, no hero Tomas,
(30:29):
no lot some cows. I would look at your work
when you like a me on What I do? My
wo he said, is to come not Gonas. Couldn't sell
it that in m s. He's just saying round saying
to go away. I guess he said to say about
(30:52):
don't tell Paul gon bunny.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
At it a chow They say paid?
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Take on hire heroda No, what is no gow? I'm
a wook a your what I can feel? One? No? God?
(31:30):
What's the thing he does in Prismatween and the dry
of the union jo from my man.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
I live in the world.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
I see leader when we reput lock as we go
all the time, yell just a job, and he said,
may take on up here. No hero to thea No
what is to God? I'm a wooking your no one.
I can feel what do J.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Come on? It is odd
