What if the divine and the mysterious are closer than you think? From the quaint streets of Chattanooga, Tennessee, I, Billy Shadow, invite you on an enthralling journey through tales of glowing beings that shattered my childhood perception of reality. Joined by the insightful Daniel Van Cleave, we unravel these otherworldly experiences and discuss their striking parallels with biblical narratives, where fear and reassurance often accompany encounters with the celestial. Inspired by the vivid depictions in Frank Peretti's novels, we ponder the eternal battle between good and evil, and how these encounters can illuminate truths beyond our comprehension.

Transformations, exorcisms, and the intriguing dynamics of supernatural warfare await you in our candid discussions. Hear about a young woman's profound change after an exorcism and a chilling account of demons seemingly transferred to a dog. These stories prompt us to question the very nature of demons: are they chaotic rebels or something far more complex? As we explore these spiritual skirmishes, we reflect on the possibility of turning malevolent events into forces for good, much like the narrative of the freed demoniac who defied the darkness to become a guiding light in his community. Join us to gain insights into the unseen battles that quietly shape our existence.

Cleave continues now.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome to the Sonic Hitchhiker Podcast Dedicated to
all things strange, mysteriousand just plain out of the
ordinary.
Your guide on this audioodyssey is Billy Shadow.
Billy has led a life full ofexperiences that have put him on
his current path, from hishumble beginnings in the ghettos
of southwest Georgia to theGreat Plains of Oklahoma.

(00:28):
Billy has led a life full ofexperiences.
As a youth, billy traveled withhis family on a bus while his
father preached in churchesacross the country.
As a young man, billy spenttime in the military, became an
entrepreneur, met and workedwith multiple celebrities,
became a singer-songwriter.
Billy's travels and experienceshave led him to witness

(00:48):
exorcisms, cult mind-controlevents, ghosts and other
supernatural phenomena.
It is because of his interestin these experiences that this
podcast was created.
And now your host, billy.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Shadow, I want to ask you this now.
We talked about UFOs and wekind of got off track, but in a
good way, I think.
I think it's very interesting.
People hopefully will find itthat way.
As a child and this is in one ofmy episodes I don't know if you
listen to any of them, but oneof my episodes I talk about
something that happened to me asa child that I've never been
able to explain and I want youropinion of it.

(01:23):
Happened to me as a child thatI've never been able to explain
and I want your opinion of itStaying at my grandfather's
house grandmother andgrandfather's house in
Chattanooga, tennessee, duringthe summer.
Sometimes my dad don't ask mewhat he did.
He would drop us off and I'mone of nine kids and of course
there weren't nine at the time, but I was I always want to say
nine, but I think I was 10 yearsold, but one summer and I've

(01:44):
told this story in a previousepisode so I won't go into too
many details but we were droppedoff as usual.
On occasion we would getdropped off and my dad would go
do his thing and my mom and thefamily would stay there at my
grandmother's house inChattanooga, tennessee, really
old house, and one night I fellasleep on the couch and I saw
three beings, all glowing white,at the front door, hands

(02:09):
outstretched.
They didn't look what we wouldcall evil or they didn't look
malicious in any way, but theyscared me as a child.
You're not used to seeingsomething like that and I saw
them and I remember doingeverything I could to wake up,
thinking this must be a dream.
Every time I looked again, theywere just closer to the.

(02:30):
Eventually they were right overme.
When I, when I sat up on thecouch, they were right there,
clear as day.
Three, three beings male, female, I don't know, but beings of
light would be accurate becausethey were literally glowing,
with their hands outstretchedand smile.
I do remember them smiling.
They again, they didn't lookmean, terrified, but they
terrified me because who seesthat?

(02:51):
Once the lights came on, theydisappeared.
There was no doubt that I wasawake.
I don't know what that was I II've said ghosts, but I don't
know.
I don't know what form.
Throughout the Bible, peoplecome to people and spirits come
to people in different forms, whether it's animals, beams of

(03:13):
light, voices.
Were you afraid what?

Speaker 3 (03:16):
was your emotion.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
I was afraid because I think anyone that would see
something that you can't explainlike that out of the blue would
be frightened.
I think even an adult.
I was a kid, but even as anadult I'll be honest.
If I tonight lay in my bed andthere's three things that show
up, yeah, I'm afraid the Biblementions that if you have this,

(03:41):
that fear is not of God.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
So that's also something that Michael the
archangel showed up to Mary.
Why did he tell her don't beafraid?

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Because she would be afraid.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
She was peeing down both legs.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
She was terrified.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
I'm just I mean it's a good point.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
It's a good point.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
In Scripture, the terror.
I think it opened my eyes.
I would recommend reading someFrank Peretti novels.
If you've not read any of those, they're obviously fictional.
But Frank Peretti, piercing theDarkness, this Present Darkness
.
He really features andhighlights in his book the

(04:24):
battle between good and evil thebattle between good, as in the
messengers of God, these angels, the angels that Jesus said in
the Gospels, that the angels ofthe children come to him daily
on their behalf.
So I believe we have assignmentangels that have an assignment

(04:44):
over us for protection, according to what Jesus alluded
to.
The children certainly do, butI think equally, not necessarily
as powerful, and I think FrankParedes does a very good job of
featuring the battle that goeson between those that oppose and
force, and I mentioned beforeI've seen them both.

(05:07):
I picked up a hitchhiker onetime I don't pick up hitchhikers
, Don't recommend picking uphitchhikers Passed him
Overwhelming draw to turn aroundand go back and get that dude.
He was a milky skininned blackdude with blue eyes.
So I unholstered my .357 Magnum, I stuck it under my leg and I

(05:31):
had my left hand on it under myleg ready in case he was a
predator Right.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
But you had this overwhelming desire to pick him
up, regardless of the fear thatyou most certainly had, since
you had a pistol.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
I picked him up.
Yeah, yeah, he gets in my truck.
I mean, he pulls a knife andtries to cut.
I'm going to shoot him.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
But something in your head said I've got to go pick
this guy up.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yes, sir, I know now it was the Holy Spirit.
So he told me.
He said put your sword away, Icome in peace.
And let me tell you, when hespoke to me, he said there was
no more fear.
He said that.
He said put your sword away, Icome in peace the hitchhiker and
I pulled.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
That's interesting I pulled.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
I pulled my 357 magnum out from under my leg.
Yeah, I holstered it.
I stuck it back in my door andwe had about a 30-minute ride
where he began to tell me aboutall kinds of relationships that
I had.
He knew everybody I knew, notjust in that city but other
cities.
He had encounters.
He told me about an encounterhe had with a friend of mine's

(06:41):
granddaddy who this, this friend, had been dead for.
I mean this grandpa, hisgrandpa had been dead for 30
years and but this guy, um, youknow that that was 27, 28 years
ago.
It's been a while but, um, butit blew my mind and and so I'm

(07:02):
thinking, okay, he could be aprophet, he could be an angel.
I'm thinking he's an.
He could be a prophet, he couldbe an angel, I'm thinking he's
an angel.
But I knew he was an angel.
When he disappeared we were, hetold me to drop him off at.
I picked him up in Camilla, georgia, heading South.
He told me to drop him off atthe farmer's market.
I said farmer's market's closed, bro, and he goes.

(07:23):
Yeah, I said where are youheaded?
And he said I'm headed to thetrain station.
I said well, I'm taking you tothe train station and he goes
you're going the extra mile, bless you.
I take him to the train stationabout a mile away and he said
God bless you.
I don't think I touched him.
I wanted to.
He opened the door, steps out, shuts the door.

(07:48):
I got out of my truck.
There's nobody around.
We're in a parking lot inThomasville, georgia, at the
train station.
I got out of my truck because Iwanted to shake his hand.
I got out of my truck, dude wasgone.
I got down on all fours.
I look under the truck becauseI thought, okay, I'm a realist.
Dude just crawled under mytruck.
What's going on?

(08:09):
But I knew.
I knew what it was.
I had entertained an angel.
You know, I've seen that inother people's lives.
I've had people come to me.
One mother that was trying torock her child to sleep and her
child was a couple of months oldnever spoke a word.

(08:30):
First word out of the child'smouth was after the mother
realized that the child wasmoving its head around and
watching.
And this lamp comes on in theroom and the child is what is
moving around?
Like the mom knows, the childis watching something in the

(08:50):
room and she goes OK, yeah, yeah, your angels need to leave this
room so you can go to sleep.
Now Door shuts and the childspeaks and says Gabriel, mom
heard Gabriel.
Those things you can't explain.
So I think there are tons ofencounters, both the good.

(09:15):
The ones that I like to talkabout are the good ones.
The ones I don't like to talkabout are the ones where I've
seen face shifts.
I've seen the evil in person'seyes.
I've seen sat and did notphysically see the demons come
out of this girl, but I knew thedemons came out of her and some

(09:36):
of the demons were witnessed byone of the guys in our group.
There's about six or seven ofus around her after a church
service praying over her and ittook her hours to be able to say
leave me in Jesus name.
She could not say the nameJesus.
She would try to form it and itjust wouldn't come out.
Finally, after hours ofbattling, pulling her hair out,

(09:58):
gritting her teeth, screaming, carrying on, these demons came
out and I was always baffledbecause they knocked a dude over
my friend named Cordy.
They knocked Cordy over.
Cordy's the only one that sawphysically, saw dozens of them
leave hurt.
They knocked him on his back, hurt him.

(10:18):
He hurt the back of his head,he was terrified, he was a wreck
and I thought that messes mytheology up, because I don't
believe a Christian can bephysically accosted by a demon.
I don't believe a Christian can.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Oh.
But Daniel, you should know.
You know this now for sure, butback then maybe not.
But you know, in the NewTestament Jesus' disciples,
there was a devil hanging out inthe graveyard in the form of a
man.
And because the disciples werepretty cocky, they thought,

(10:51):
because we're hanging out withthis guy, jesus, who does all of
these miracles and cast outdemons and can tell a fig tree
to die and such.
And he did at one time say youknow, if you had the faith, you
would be able to do what I do ifyou had the faith I had.
The problem is they didn't havethe faith he had.
But at one point there's thisguy running around in the

(11:12):
graveyard everyone was afraid of, and of course he was possessed
with a demon and several devils, apparently legions, yes and uh
.
The disciples take it onthemselves to be exorcist and
they're going to go out and tryto do this themselves without
the man in charge, which who wasJesus, and when they did, he

(11:32):
beat the crap out of them.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
So much, so yeah, that at all I definitely believe
that that um, someone can bepossessed by a demon and that
person can attack.
I watched um a physical attack,a physical attack where
exponential strength, where hewas throwing grown Brazilian Jiu

(11:55):
Jitsu martial artists.
He was throwing them all overthe place the human body.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Let me go back to my point real quick.
Sorry about that.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Go ahead my buddy Cordy, struggled for the longest
.
Why was Cordy not?
Why was Cordy hit for thelongest?
Why was Cordy not?
Why was Cordy hit?
Well, all of a sudden?
I mean, he's terrified, he's amess.
I've seen other encounters towhere my beliefs are that you
cannot be possessed by thespirit of God and possessed by

(12:28):
the spirit of Beelzebub or Satanor Lucifer or whatever you want
to call it.
And so Cordy, several yearslater, posted on Facebook hey, I
just realized I was lost, called out to Jesus.
I'm free.
I've never.
And I called him.
I was like what, man, that'scrazy.
So I go back to that encounterwhere this young lady by the way

(12:51):
, the demons left her To theextent.
This was a Saturday night.
Sunday morning she walked intothe hall of the church and I
walked up to her and introducedmyself.
Her eyes were blue.
The night before they werebrown, totally different
complexion, totally differentgirl.
It took me minutes to be ableto recognize her, to really

(13:12):
truthfully accept, and I hadspent hours in a circle with her
, pleading with her and tryingto help and coach her to be free
.
But yeah, you know, I think of,I think of.
So I definitely believe you canbe jumped and mauled and even
killed by a demon-possessedperson.
But I don't think that.

(13:32):
I think that demon has tooccupy something, whether it's a
dog.
For instance, my brother engageda demon-possessed man as a
deacon at a church, went withone of the pastors and this
demon-possessed man was runningon all fours around the house
barking, crawled under the bedwhen they got there and they're

(13:55):
calling out to him to be freedand calling out to him to, and
his wife is terrified.
I mean, this dude is.
They should not have gone withjust the two of them.
This was a very dangeroussituation.
Well, this guy the pastor's,commanding the demons to leave
him.
Which is between him and theLord.
I don't think that that is agood.

(14:17):
Unless the Lord told him to dothat Maybe he did.
The guy takes off, tears outthe back door, runs through the
yard, runs up and grabs this dogby the ears my brother David
witnessed this and Pastor AndyGrabs the dog, pulls the dog's
snout up to his mouth and hebegins to convulse and begins to

(14:40):
carry on.
The dog starts.
They disengage.
The dog starts barking, carrying on, breaks, the chain,
runs off and they find the dogdead on.
Breaks, the chain runs off andthey find the dog dead.
It was their belief that thatperson transferred those demons
to that dog.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Well, yeah, go ahead.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
Humans I believe they can possess.
You know, in the demoniac thatyou mentioned, the demons asked
to be sent to the pigs, to theswine, and it was perhaps
hundreds of them, maybe maybethousands, I don't know.
But um, um, they went andentered those pigs and they run
off into the, into the sea, anddrown.
But but, but, when they getinto the sea, guess what's in

(15:23):
the sea?
Lots of fishies, lots of otherbeings that they can.
They can get in those otherbeings and they can transport to
to um other places, maybe afisherman, maybe a fisherman's,
pulling a net in, and all of asudden they jumped from that
fish to that, to that human, Imean that's.

(15:44):
I don't have any proof of that, but that's my thoughts on that.
I studied that and thought thatyou know for years.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
But no, I, I, I, uh, I want to.
I don't know how much time youhave, daniel, just let me know
when you're ready to go um again.
You can always come back againand tell other story, because I
find this stuff fascinating.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
I hope other people do as well, so you tell me I
want to address the things youwant to address.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
I've got a few more minutes okay, okay, all right,
well, I well, we, this.
This may be the last subject wetalk about, because that's
that's fascinating enough on itsown, but I too, I want to.
I want to relay a story to youand let you and see what your
thought on this, based on yourstory about the dog, which is
fascinating.
Wow, that's, that's.

(16:29):
That's something else, and I dobelieve that if, if, god, if,
if, if it is a spiritual, theBible says a spiritual warfare,
and I'm using the Bible becausewe both that's our part of our
faith.
So the Bible does claimspiritual warfare.
Dark and light.
Satan at one time was an angelof light and still apparently

(16:50):
tries to.
And I want to ask you thisquestion if Satan wants to be
Christ-like, if he wants to comeoff as an angel of light, are
these demons that do all theseridiculous things and attack
people?
Obviously you're not going towant to believe in something
that attacks you and tries tohurt you.
What would you think demons are?

(17:11):
If Satan is the master?
Are the demons rebels?
What's going on?
What do you think is going onin that?

Speaker 3 (17:19):
Look at the people around demon possession.
Let's take the demoniac.
You brought him up.
He's probably in a graveyard.
He's chained, he's naked.
He's running around like araging lunatic.
I mean, he's messed up.
He's a miracle he lives.
But you look at all of thepeople around him.
There's a village.

(17:39):
These people are certainly notJewish, because Jews did not
handle pigs, so they arecertainly what the Bible calls
Gentiles.
Their livelihood is the pigs.
They're raising the pigs fortheir support, just to provide
for their family.
But they're looking around andthey're seeing this crazy man

(18:00):
that's foaming at the mouth anddangerous.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
He's a terrorizer.
He's terrorizing people.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
He's terrorizing them .
Imagine the story when, all ofa sudden, this man walks up and,
by the way, if you remember, after he's freed he wants to go
with Jesus and Jesus says no,you don't come with me, you stay
here.
Why did he want him to staythere?
He wanted him to make disciplesof that village.
He had a story.

(18:27):
He had a story where he hadgone through hell, hard times,
crazy encounters, and that storyin that, that whole scenario,
no doubt drew people to a holyGod and a reverent God.
What the devil often means, whatthe enemy, satan you know we
call him all kinds of thingswhat he means for evil.

(18:48):
The Bible tells us that Godmeans for good and he brings
about good.
And I think, billy, the dangerthat we face as men, as
Christians, as whether you'reChristian or not, the danger we
face is that I think we saw itcoming up in our upbringing is

(19:14):
not just just because you have aflutter in your stomach or you
have an unction or a sense to dosomething.
That doesn't mean you need togo do it.
Many to sit on, many to wait, and I think a lot of mistakes
are made on the altar of.
I'm going to do this becausethis is what I felt, this is
what I sense, this is what I'msupposed to do.

(19:35):
This because this is what Ifelt, this is what I sensed,
this is what I'm supposed to do.
Well, you better make sure thetiming is right.
I think often we mess up thetiming and we mess up the
context.
You mentioned the Bible can bemanipulated, I think.
I think it's taken out ofcontext in so many scenarios and

(19:57):
because we don't see the rawpicture.
I'd like to finally say this, and I just as a, as a rule of
thumb, I want to challenge yourlisteners to, to, to make, make
decisions from the rocking chair, make decisions from your 90
year old person, from your90-year-old person.

(20:17):
You're 90-something years oldFor me.
I'm sitting I hoped it wasTennessee I want to sit in the
mountains, I'm on this porch andI'm just rocking.
I'm 90-something years old.
I want to look back on my lifefrom that 90-year-old rocking
chair and I want to be able to,to see certain things, I want to

(20:39):
be able to have experiencecertain things, but there's
things that I don't need to rockin that chair and process and
if I'm not careful, we can maketerrible mistakes based on what
we feel or what we sense, because we move too soon and God
is aligning all of thesephenomenas.

(20:59):
You mentioned the Red Sea.
You mentioned Balaam's donkey, you know all these mosaic laws
and all this stuff.
I mean, just even last week Isaw a Red Sea.
I mean it was small, no big, nobig deal, but I think it's
going to be a big deal.
I'm standing here in the officeand somebody mentions the bank

(21:24):
and all of a sudden I realize,oh, I've got to go by and do
this at the bank and I totallyforgot about an appointment that
I had, which is not usual forme.
I'm very punctual, I want to beon time.
So all of a sudden I'm at thebank and I'm reckless, I'm not
thinking about this appointmentthat I have.
So I get to the bank and assoon as I pull up in the bank, I

(21:47):
look and I see one of my oldbuddies sitting in a car.
He's on the phone, he waves.
I'm like Albert, that was goodto see him.
I need to call him.
I go on in the bank.
Well, he comes in the bank.
We start talking.
Long story short, he and I areinvolved in three commercial

(22:07):
development projects.

Speaker 2 (22:08):
Right, now from that happenstance appointment.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
We're standing there talking, we're exchanging
numbers and hey, let me help yousomething down the road.
You know anything I can do foryou?
And all of a sudden myappointment calls me and says,
hey, where are you at?
And I was like, oh, I'm sosorry, I'll be there in 10
minutes, I'm so sorry.
So the next day this guy callsme and says, hey, he said, and I
quote, I don't think it washappenstance that we ran into

(22:30):
each other yesterday.
He said would you take a lookat this post office renovation?
Would you take a look at thisrestaurant I need fixed?
Are you interested in doingthis development?
All of a sudden it's blown intoall these projects.
I think the Lord aligned thatand that's a small little bitty
parting of the sea, but that wecould sit here and talk all day

(22:55):
long of many, many encountersmuch greater than that from you
know, having a flat tire, havingto pull over, and then, next
thing you know, there's thiscatastrophic accident down the
way where there's a 25 car pileup.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Oh, we could we could , we could, we could have that
discussion for for hours.
Yes, yes, I want to.
I want to say something to youbefore we get out of here, and
this is something that isimportant to me and I think it's
important for the listeners aswell.
Where we live is between ourtwo ears, ultimately, and I also
think that's where the yourlives.

(23:33):
And if you notice, in thescripture that we talk about
with the man in the graveyardwho is possessed, there is
something that is said when thedemons are out of him that is
mentioned.
That, I think, is probably themost important thing that comes
out of that whole experience, which is when the demons are out

(23:56):
of him and the Bible says thatpeople couldn't believe it
because they saw him sittingaround in his right.
What?

Speaker 3 (24:04):
Right mind.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
Exactly that's what you got to protect, that's what
we all have to protect, because,in the end, that's where we
live and if anything is going topossess us, that's where it's
going to possess us at.
And that's another we live andthat, if anything is going to
possess us, that's where it'sgoing to possess us at.
And that's another story foranother day.
Because let me tell yousomething, for the mind is is,
can be, the most powerful thingthat you have, but it can also

(24:27):
be, but it is also, the mostvulnerable thing that you have,
and that's for the children, that's for the adults, that's
for all of us.
Daniel, I want to reallyappreciate, I want to tell you
how thankful I am that you have, and that's for the children,
that's for the adults, that'sfor all of us.
Daniel, I want to reallyappreciate, I want to tell you
how thankful I am that you cameon here today.

Speaker 1 (24:41):
This was fascinating.
I knew it would be.
That'll do it for anotheredition of the show.

Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
