Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following podcast is a work of fiction.
All characters are the creationof Peter Williams.
Any resemblance to someoneliving or dead is purely
coincidental.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Thank you, Honey, I'm home is usually a wonderful,
happy thing Children runninginto the arms of their father,
mothers smiling, the sounds of ahappy, healthy household but
not today.
Today, those words bring horror, death, and well, you'll see.

(00:36):
First, let me remind you thatthis podcast may contain images
of graphic violence, childendangerment and naughty, salty
language.
Now settle in.
Oh, maybe lock a door or two.
You don't want any unwantedvisitors or interruptions as you

(01:00):
grab your tentacles for thisTentacle.
Tuesday's chapter of Woe andLamentation, chapter 14.
Oh, that's not good.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
If anyone had told Roger Diaz that he'd be working
in a secret lab in a hauntedhouse, he would have laughed at
you.
He was a devout realist anddidn't believe in anything at
all Ghosts, an overactiveimagination, angels and demons,
maybe aliens, but spiritual.
And the creator, please.

(01:37):
He and the word are nicestories told to families and
children, designed to give hope.
It was all bullshit.
That was until a strangecloaked man pushed me down and
seemed to hurry past him.
Hey, he yelled.
That was when he saw it, thisthing that was lurching towards
him.
He scrambled backwards and hecould feel the dry branches of

(02:00):
the bush digging into the smallof his back.
This thing was half bird andman, maybe lizard, because its
human features had scales.
Drool poured from its beak, itseyes focused on him as it
crawled towards him on thesidewalk, forgetting about the
man in the cloak.
Oh shit, shit, shit, shit.

(02:21):
Diaz thought If he didn't turnand get up, it was sure to catch
him, but if he didn't move, itwas strange how detailed the
creature seemed against theblack of the night, a night that
vanished instantly in anexplosion of blue as a wall of
light broke through the darkness, wrapping, warping in an
unnatural way surrounding thecreature, whose eyes now bulged

(02:45):
as if gasping for breath.
It made a pirouette towards thelight, digging its claws into
the sidewalk.
It pulled back, screeching,croaking.
He wasn't sure what the soundwas it could even be a gurgle as
it grabbed at its throat, trying to pull away an unseen
cord.
The cloaked man stepped out ofthe blue fire and towards it,

(03:07):
and Diaz could see that the bluelight emanated from the man's
left hand.
His eyes glowed an eerieamethyst, and he let a small wry
smile cross his lips.
As he raised his hand, thecreature squelched as it spit up
blood and goo.
And he let a small wry smilecross his lips.
As he raised his hand, thecreature squelched as it spit up
blood and goo.
His eyes then looked towardsDiaz Get up and move behind me.

(03:29):
Diaz nodded and pulled himselfoff the ground, the thing
desperately lashing at him, atthe cloaked figure, as crunch,
chunk by chunk, the thing wascompressed and then pulled into
the man's hand.
That was how he met Jonah.
That was the day, well night, that the veil had been torn open
and now he was a full member ofthe Sacred Dawn, which these

(03:53):
days, even more than usual, wasa difficult and dangerous job.
He looked at his watch it wasnearly 1600,600 hours.
Henry had yet to check in andAlex was running late.
He was more concerned aboutHenry than Alex.
Henry Bell, former police chiefof Montgomery, was normally
confined to a wheelchair, butthrough some sort of miracle he

(04:15):
was able not only to take theform of the low-class demons
sent to obtain alex, he was alsoable to walk.
The transceiver was increasinglystaticky, usually a sign that
something more powerful waseither near the gate or trying
to take form in the house.
Even though barriers had beenset up and the place had been
blessed, the vestibule with theplanets carved into the floor

(04:38):
seemed to act as a strangeconduit.
He checked the cameras.
They too were glitchy.
He couldn't keep the fireplacein focus.
Damn, what could be causingthat?
He clicked the radio next to himand called to another station
Rosie, it's Diaz.
You read yes, diaz, I can'tkeep that damn fireplace in

(04:59):
focus.
Can you check it out?
I still need to run the specson Alex's last test.
You got it, diaz.
Just remember you owe me acoffee after work.
Sure, thanks.
He began to run the test andthe camera came back on.
He could see Rosie smile, waveand climb down the ladder before

(05:20):
turning back to the fireplace.
On the camera it was clear thateither the camera had froze
again or she Rosie, he called.
He could see a puddle of liquidform directly on the floor
beneath her.
He followed to where she waslooking.
Oh, Lord, it's not good was allhe could mutter as he pressed

(05:41):
the emergency button and lockeddown the facility.
It would keep anyone that wasnot marked out and it would keep
that thing in.
He had him pushed away from thedesk when he saw Rosie's body
split in two.
Her legs stood like an obscenefountain, spewing blood straight
up.
Briefly as her body crashed tothe floor, crossing himself with

(06:02):
the sign of the word, hegrabbed one item he hoped could
help him and ran down the stairsto meet it, whatever it was.
Rose was half asleep at her desk.
It was another day at theThomas residence Haunted house.
She scoffed.
She had seen nothing toconvince her that this place was
nothing more than a creepy, cold old house, although the

(06:30):
vestibule was odd.
She pulled the pencil back fromthe white paper and admired her
latest cynical cartoon.
It was of Alex in what wasaffectionately called the Danger
Room, named after the oldMarvel comic the X-Men.
There she was training onweights, martial arts, and they
even had a creative obstaclecourse with swinging bags.
They also had ropes and somehired actors to attack her with
various weapons.

(06:51):
Ridiculous, she thought.
Unlike Diaz, she had neverexperienced anything
supernatural and only came towork here because she had met
Harmony, she loved herbewitching personality and when
they had sat down drinking ather favorite watering hole,
mccluskey's, the Thomasresidence had come up, and how
she worked there doingparanormal research and again,

(07:15):
while she had never seenanything supernatural herself,
she still wanted to.
That would be so cool.
She still wanted to.
That would be so cool.
She remarked to Harmony Becareful what you wish for.
But in the 18 months since shecame here, nothing, nada, zip,
zilch.
She hadn't been present on theday the creature manifested in

(07:35):
the fireplace, nor did she seeHenry take its form, walk and go
through himself.
No to her, this place was asilly farce.
And well, at least it paid well, and Diaz was pretty cute too.
The radio crackled Rosie, it'sDiaz.
You read yeah, diaz.
She stretched and yawned andfrowned at her empty coffee cup.

(07:59):
I can't keep that damnfireplace in focus.
Can you check it out?
I still need to run the specson Alex's last test.
You got it, diaz.
Just remember you owe me a cupof coffee after work.
She heard Diaz laugh.
Sure, thanks.
Rose got up and headed towardsthe great room and fireplace.

(08:19):
She grabbed a ladder andclimbed towards the camera.
The wire was loose and shereconnected it.
Her hand felt something wet andsticky on the beam near the
camera.
Ick, what Ugh?
Now she would need to clean upbefore going back to being bored
Seeing the camera light flickback on.

(08:40):
She smiled and waved at Diaz.
Before climbing back down shebrushed the substance onto her
pants.
It was dark, red, almostblood-colored.
She turned to head towards thebathroom and froze.
Something stood in the fireplacea tall, thick, bulging thing.

(09:01):
It had the look of somethingtorn apart and stuck back
together.
It gazed at her and she felther bladder let loose as it
smiled and said Honey, I'm home.
A tree-trunked, skinless armextended towards her in an
unnatural manner, as if it wasmade of bubble gum, stretching,

(09:23):
turning until she felt it plungeinto her stomach, punching
straight through her.
She could hear Dia screaming, still on the radio, calling to
her, but she felt nothing, justdarkness descending before her
eyes as her body split and shefell face down towards the floor
.
Alarms blared and outside, thesounds of police vehicles

(09:46):
arriving told Diaz that theyknew about the intruder.
He could hear it tearing, smashing, screaming.
Where is she?
Where is she?
Where is she?
It repeated over and over again.
Another voice seemed to try andcomment master.
It appears she's not here.
But but what mark?

(10:07):
How can I test my new strengthif she's not here?
Look, mark was pointing to aroom where they kept the
creature that henry waspretending to be.
Do you sense it?
Yes, yes, that sweet smell ofdecay.
Of course Diaz peered at themfrom behind one of the large

(10:29):
posts that held up the home'sframe.
He aimed his device at thesmaller, pale-looking man
wearing white overalls with apatch-reading tentacle world
order Shit.
It was, as he feared.
The group that had attacked andhad killed so many members of
the Sacred Dawn was here.

(10:50):
Richard Donaldson skidded to ahulk in front of the Thomas
residence.
Two cars had already taken postand, per his instruction, had
pulled out the heavy artillery.
Not that they had much in thisregards Several pump shotguns, a
few laser scope rifles and onerocket-powered grenade launcher
they had bought at auction.
What's the situation?

(11:12):
He called to them Quiet, sir, quiet.
That's not a good sign.
If Diaz or Rose had emergedinto confusion, that would mean
that his instincts had beenwrong.
But silence.
Have you tried to raise Diaz?
Static, sir?
Fuck, what do you want to do?
You and the others wait hereuntil the rest arrive and then

(11:36):
storm the place.
Sir, trust me, he eyed the RPG.
We may need that.
Why Terrorist?
No, eric, terror itself.
He unholstered his 9mm.
You're going in?
Eric asked yes.
He signaled for the others tostay back.

(11:56):
As he meandered his way to theside entrance that Jonah had
shown him, it was a man-sizeddoor built into the chimney.
It was still intact.
That's something.
He pressed a brick and thechimney shifted.
He signaled back to Eric andthe others that he was going in.
A very narrow staircase gave himno room for mobility, an

(12:18):
oppressive air hung around himand it was about 10 minutes
until he finally reached theblood-stained floor.
He carefully pushed the panelopen and looked inside.
The blood that had seeped underthe door came from a pair of
legs Frozen in place.
The upper torso collapsed in aheap.
The creature wasn't here, although he could hear commotion

(12:41):
from deeper inside.
He pulled back on the gunloading around in the chamber
and stepped into the Thomasresidence.
Where is she?
He heard a violent scream andthe smashing of equipment.
My master, it's apparent she'snot here, but Do you sense that?
Yes, he heard another crash, this time the sound of stone

(13:05):
crumbling.
I won't let you.
He heard Diaz scream and thensomething akin to the sound of
thunder rumbled the house andwalls.
A heavy thud followed.
Did he get it?
A second followed.
No, it was walking towards Diaz.
He heard Diaz scream andsomething snapping.

(13:26):
No, rich hollered, charging inAbove him.
The front door was knocked inand he could hear officers
filing into the vestibule.
We have company, master.
Let them come.
Their screams may satisfy mydesire for blood.
Rich turned the corner but didnot freeze.

(13:48):
He unloaded his gun into Markand the beast.
Mark fell backwards, clutchinghis chest, and the beast moved
in a rage towards Rich, who hadreloaded, and again emptied the
bullets, this time into itsmisshapen head.
A bulging arm shot at him, hitting the wall next to him.
The mist was still enough toknock the wind out of him, but

(14:10):
it had stopped, as if frozen, something small about the size
of a girl was standing directlyin front of it.
There she is, but Alex glowed, glowed in a way that made both
Mark and the deformed Henryuncomfortable.
Like the years before, alexyells, I won't let you.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Has Alex done something foolish?
Stepped in front of the verybeast out to obtain her.
And Chief Donaldson, are youjust going to lie there and
allow things to unfold, althoughI'm not sure you have much of a
choice.
But first we must turn backback to the tower.

(15:00):
Jonah and Arista, with chapter15, silas on the move.
