(00:00):
I forgot there was a Pokemon Presents today, and apparently so did the Pokemon Company,

(00:04):
since they showed off nothing special.
I know that's quite the statement, but let me tell you why.
Welcome to the SwitchClicks Podcast, episode 148.
My name is Dakota, and today I'm joined by Tyler.
Hello!
And Kaiser.
Heyo!

(00:25):
I know, that started off with probably the hottest take so far, that they showed up absolutely
nothing.
I would say hot, it was pretty cold.
I mean, according to Twitter, people are like this direct for some reason.
No idea why.
I mean, if I'm being 100% honest, this is pretty much the same as most Pokemon Presents.

(00:46):
Every other Pokemon Presents is like this.
I think this time it's just kind of like a...
It is the joke that, oh, we're gonna make, they're gonna show off a mobile game, a cafe
game, and then DLC at the end.
And if they don't have DLC that year, then they'll release information about the next
game.
Hey, guess what happened this time?

(01:06):
The exact same thing.
Wow, who would've guessed?
Damn, I can't believe it.
Wow.
I was so taken aback by the nut thing that I fell asleep.
I'm happy that it took us 150 episodes, but we finally struck a hot take.

(01:29):
It took us a bit, but we're here.
It's as hot as fresh ice.
It might be pretty mild, but still, I don't know.
I won't even say hot, man.
I'm sorry, but it's dry.
We have like, okay, show us the school.
I don't know.

(01:49):
I think it's as hot as saying anything negative about Pokemon, because there's always gonna
be...
Yeah, I mean, grr, where's my graphics?
Where's my optimism?
I mean, outside of that, I honestly, this feels more like it should've been a standard

(02:12):
announcement rather than just, well, a whole blown direct.
But you don't get 500,000 people watching.
Not 500,000.
That's like 100% true.
100% probably true.
500,000 is probably right.
You don't get 500,000 live viewers without doing a Pokemon Presents.
Yeah.
Because the mystery around it makes people assume there's gonna be something, especially

(02:37):
when they marketed it.
The marketing where the M on the Pokemon logo is flashing, and it's like, oh, this is gonna
be something interesting.
And it was a Mewtwo raid.
Yeah.
Damn.
Admittedly, a cool animation to announce it, but where's that money in the games?

(03:01):
It is, I mean, to be fair, a pre-rendered animation is easier than rendering it real
time in the games, but I do 100% agree.
Especially the amount of, the Pokemon Presents are always so funny because they show a little

(03:22):
bit of things that would be really nice in the game, be it a Pokemon Masters thing and
having a voice for the rival, or two separate little animes, like anime announcements.
One is a YouTube series, one is the actual anime showing that they can do good animation,

(03:44):
and then a 3D pre-rendered announcement for Mewtwo.
All combined are like, oh, wow, I can't wait to see these in actual Pokemon games.
No.
Especially when you halfway through the Presents, they show off to Detective Pikachu Returns
and it still looks like garbage.

(04:06):
It looks like the 3DS game still.
It looks like a complete joke.
The Switch can do so much better, you can't blame it on the hardware.
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
There's no devil's advocate.
I'm sorry, look, all I have to say is that jokes have to be funny, alright?
It's insane because there's like excuses you can make for a big Pokemon game where it's

(04:30):
like, oh, it can't look like Pokemon Snap because Pokemon Snap is on rails and you're
not adventuring through everything.
I feel like Detective Pikachu can look like Pokemon Snap.
100% I think it could also look better than Pokemon Snap, if given the chance.
And genuinely, I don't think Detective Pikachu Returns has shadows.
I think that's what the problem is.

(04:52):
It has no lighting.
I think the shadows are just really low opacity because I'm pretty sure.
I might be like Mandela affecting myself.
There's a good chance I'm fully Mandela affecting myself and putting shadows in with my brain.
Give me that rage tracing, honestly.
I'm not expecting rage tracing, but they have proof that Pokemon Snap or Pokemon in general

(05:20):
can look good with Pokemon Snap.
I think honestly, I think Pokemon Unite looks better than Pokemon Pikachu.
Yeah, you're right.
Ouch.
To be fair, that's the top down game.
Wow.
It is a...
It's remarkable how it just doesn't look like they...

(05:47):
Ah, man.
It's such a depressing sight because Pokemon, it feels like it's so easy to clown on because
it is, to be fair.
And there's just no attempt to be better.
Well, I heard somebody say that the web anime stuff, which to be fair, I've heard nobody

(06:16):
talk about the Zora one that they released sometime last year.
And also the animation stuff for the Mewtwo raid.
That is all just money they're going to burn for tax write-offs.
And honestly, that's the most plausible thing.

(06:42):
Even with the big announcement, the DLC for the game, well, it does look fine.
Looks about the same as the previous game.
I feel like I have to wait until I actually play it because I will because I'm a little
goofy chill guy.
But I feel like in Sword and Shield, the DLC was kind of like, oops, we realized we messed

(07:07):
up a little bit and we're actively making the game better with this inclusion.
We're trying a little bit harder to make the game visually appealing.
Whereas this one just looks like it just feels like an addition.
There doesn't really seem to be much of a growth anywhere in a very weird and...

(07:31):
I don't know.
I feel like literally everything about this was middling and could have been...
I think making a big deal about it is why it's so bad.
Yeah.
Honestly, I feel no hype for that DLC.
And considering it's going to come out in roughly 30 days, I can wait another 30 days

(07:55):
and have three games that I'm going to play.
You got the new Spider-Man, you got the new Mario, and you got the Sonic all in the same
day.
That's insane.
Yeah.
Triple spread.
Come on.
And then what?
Probably like two months later, the second part of the DLC comes out.
And my feelings towards Sword and Shield were I grinded that game and felt nothing.
So why would I buy the DLC?

(08:16):
And the DLC, first part kind of looks all right, but it was just new Pokemon and maybe
new areas I could not tell.
I think it's a new area.
Yeah.
New area.
Yeah, there was new area.
I imagine half the size of the normal map.
The second part was just, oh, you get this room with four corridors and you can find

(08:41):
new Pokemon.
Am I really paying for Pokemon?
Nah.
Pay for experience.
There's no experience.
It's not entirely the case.
It's paying for...
Yeah, never mind.
It's paying for experience.
I...
It's that self-realization.
I'm sorry, buddy.
It is...

(09:02):
I've made a horrible mistake by the last two weeks of my life.
I've gotten really back into certain Pokemon fan games and stuff.
And I've been having a really good time with passion-filled, really well-made Pokemon fan

(09:23):
games and ROM hacks.
And then this presence was announced and I'm like, oh, I'm actually in a Pokemon mood.
This is exciting.
And then I watch it and it's just like, okay, I'm going to go back to Pokemon Infinite Fusion
now.
Yeah.
It's just a big group.
Yeah.
It's very weird.
The other thing, they're kind of pulling what Breath of the Wild did with exclusivity things.

(09:50):
And it looks like in part one or part two, you'll unlock full flight with your legendary
Pokemon.
So they're putting that behind a paywall.
To be fair, Nintendo has not been very good for DLC.
Even Breath of the Wild DLC is not incredible.
What other DLC is there?
Let's see the blade.
I'm going to be 100% honest.

(10:10):
I'm pretty sure you're going to unlock full flight for a mini-game or two.
It's not going to be an...
It's either going to be you unlock it for that specific area's open world, they don't
let you do it in the previous one.
I would be in shock if they open it up to the main game as well, you can fly around.

(10:32):
I think you're right.
Either that or you can only fly inside that dome.
Because I'm pretty sure it didn't...
Following Pokemon, you can unlock it in one of the DLCs in the last one.
And then you weren't...
But you were only allowed to walk them in the DLC areas?
Or am I thinking about the wrong thing?
No, that was right.

(10:53):
When you got to the island in the first part, Pokemon can only follow you around in that
area.
Okay.
Yeah, no.
It's so bad that you can predict that and put a decent amount of money on that and make
millions.
Actually, you wouldn't make millions because it's too predictable.
Yeah, no.
I wouldn't be...
It's so annoying because I actually enjoyed Scarlet and Violet quite a bit.

(11:17):
I feel like there's a couple mistakes that...
There's a couple easy dumb mistakes in the sense.
Very easy fixes to make a Pokemon game that I really would like, but instead they just...
I don't know.
Not having the gym leader scale is such a baffling choice.

(11:40):
You can pick any gym leader.
You can fight anyone in any order you'd like, but there is a specific order you're supposed
to take because their levels don't change based on the amount of badges you have.
Yeah.
I mean, we're treading the same ground, but yeah.
It's such a...
I feel like every game is like, oh, this one actually...

(12:05):
These advancements show that the next game could be the one I've...
A really good one.
It's like three choices away from being correct.
And then the next game comes out and they're like, oh, now they're two choices away from
being correct.
And then they go seven steps back.
It's just that I can understand what you really enjoy because it's that sense of progression.

(12:31):
Sometimes I feel that Pokemon...
I really do like more linear games, not a lot of open world.
The sense of progression feels more real in those games, right?
And that's why I do really enjoy a lot of JRPGs, Pokemon for one, right?
Scarlet Violet, I'm not all defensive about, but I'm not particularly impressed either.

(12:58):
It does well in a lot of areas, but in some others, it's that much better.
I'm sorry.
It is a...I don't know about this.
Let's talk about Pokemon Cafe Reman.
I'm completely ignoring it for a reason.
What do you mean?
It's a peak.
It's a peak, all right?

(13:19):
It's honestly the most important announcement, all right?
You know what I did do?
After the presents, I'm like, okay, who's actually playing the game?
So I went over to Google Trends and a lot of people are playing it.
More people are playing it now than when it was initially released.

(13:39):
That's hilarious.
I guess there's bound to be...like with the amount of...for how long this game's been
out, there has to be like you pop in and there's like infinite content.
Yeah.
I mean, I played it for a bit, maybe like 50 levels, but it got stale.
Oh, speaking of baffling choices, I really want to...like this is a complaint I've had

(14:05):
for such a long time, but Pokemon Masters EX, still a crazy name, crazy name that they
named it Pokemon Master Sex and just kept it.
Whoa, friendly language here.
The choice to make a mobile game, oh, bump my mic, made a mobile game that you can battle

(14:27):
any trainer in the series as any trainer in the series.
And then they don't just make it the battling system from the game.
I feel like it would be the perfect mobile game if it was just like the in-game battling
system from the video games, but you could do it on your phone and that's the only...that's
the game.
The game is just battling Pokemon.

(14:50):
It's like Pokemon...
And the fact that they put voice actors to every single character is just so much salt
in the world.
It's like a salt...yeah.
Like Pokemon Showdown has been profitable for so long.
It doesn't make any money, but like it's been successful.
People like the game because you can battle Pokemon on your computer and on your phone.

(15:11):
Why don't you just make the game where you can battle Pokemon like in the games, but
now you can battle like Lance or you can battle like Cynthia, but she has a special, I don't
know, Arceus or something.
If I go to like...I just feel like I'd be so happy to have my little team of guys from

(15:36):
the games I like so much and I'm like, oh, a special challenge run where I have to fight
Zinnia with Rayquaza?
Wow.
I'm popping off.
Instead of...it's like the most bland...oh wow.
I had such a crazy choice and I was just reminded about it when they announced...I don't even

(15:58):
remember the rival's name, Nomona.
Wow.
Nomona voice popped into my ears.
Do we want to go on something positive for the last few minutes?
Sure.
Yeah, it's Pokemon.
I still like the series as much as this episode is telling people otherwise.

(16:19):
I'm sorry.
Usually in previous episodes, we talk about the Pokemon designs and we really like them.
So the new Pokemon that they showed, the three I believe, Diplo, Raikou.
I don't remember.
It's got a crazy sentence name like all the Paradox Pokemon.

(16:40):
I just don't know what it is right now.
And Raikou and they have different versions of the story.
And also Duraludon's evolution.
It's like a bridge.
I don't remember its name.
It's something really dumb, I think.
But in a fun Pokemon way.
Once again, I must reiterate, we are fake fans.
That's true.

(17:02):
I don't think I've memorized all the Gen 9 names yet.
I do think Pokemon does continue to put out pretty good ones.
In fact, I think the Ko-Ballion is probably like, it's a pretty decent for the robot designs,
which have all been pretty bad so far outside of Galaid, Gardevoir, whatever the name is.

(17:25):
Galaid-O-Var.
Yeah, that one.
That's definitely the name, Galaid-O-Var.
That one was good.
Most of the robot ones were not great.
And the Ko-Ballion one isn't the greatest thing in the world, but you know, it's better
than like High Dragon.
But yeah, I'm still happy with how that came out.

(17:46):
And I have no complaints about weird long necked Raikou.
Yeah, honestly, I don't either.
And theoretically, we should be getting the third out of the two triplets.
Where's my Entei?
Oh, that's true.
Where's the one that everybody memes about?
I feel like Entei is either going to be a Triceratops, which like sounds like it could
be the case, or a Pterodactyl.

(18:07):
And I think the Pterodactyl sounds funny because how does he fit like that?
How does he fit like that?
I hope it is a Pterodactyl.
I really hope it's the worst looking thing ever.
Because that sounds so weird.
It sounds incredibly awful, but we can't just take our eyes off it.
We just can't.

(18:28):
Oh boy.
Diplin's sick.
Oh, yes.
I'm a little worried that he doesn't evolve any further.
He probably doesn't.
That's kind of like...
Either way, Applin's by himself is amazing.
His evolutions aren't great.
Appleton slander?
Yeah, I think that's slander.

(18:52):
I get Flapple.
Flapple's kind of bad, but I love Appleton so much.
Appleton's a funny little dude.
Oh, actually, I did forget about this.
In a combo of positive and negative things to say, one, it's crazy they have not just
announced the Pokemon games coming to Ninja Switch Online.

(19:13):
That feels like the moneymaker of the century.
Yeah, but then they can't sell them for like 10 bucks a pop.
When have they even remotely tried to sell?
They haven't tried to sell like...
Is the 3DS store still open?
It's not open anymore, but when it was open, they had a yellow, red, blue crystal all for

(19:34):
like five bucks a pop.
Yeah, but what about Ruby Sapphire Emerald?
I feel like Ruby Sapphire Emerald...
They haven't been playable since the game.
Actually, it might have been on the Wii or something weird.
I don't think they have been though.
It feels like such an easy moneymaking opportunity.
Weird that they have not done it.

(19:55):
However, I am happy they had the Pokemon trading card game because it's actually a game I've
been wanting an excuse to play for a while.
And it's honestly probably the thing I was most like, oh, that's cool when it was announced.
But that being the thing that I was most...
I popped off the most about and that being like, oh, sitting in my bed looking at my

(20:19):
phone going, huh, was the biggest reaction I gave.
I think the biggest reaction for me was seeing the new girl character with blue hair that
looks like the guy from Arceus.
Oh, yes.
Yes.
And obviously, it's got to be descendants of something, which is pretty cool.

(20:44):
That is a fun one.
I didn't realize that it was Adam Man's descendant until someone on Twitter said it and I went,
oh, wait.
That's iconic blue.
True.
I do wonder...
This is like a weirdly mean-spirited thing to say.

(21:05):
I have no actual vendetta against them, but I do wonder what if I popped onto a Pokemon
YouTuber's channel, how...
Obviously they should be applauded if they explode on... they give their Pokemon YouTuber
reactions to this, this presents.

(21:28):
Because I cannot imagine seeing Mewtwo raid for the fourth time in a row.
Which is also crazy because I think two years ago or maybe three years ago, they did a very
similar Pokemon presents where they were hyping up a purple effect and it ended up being like

(21:48):
another raid battle for Mewtwo.
So they did it twice.
But I cannot imagine seeing a person jump out of their chair in excitement over Mewtwo
being in his 100th Pokemon game.
So what I did see was Tyranitar2.
He uploaded his reaction like an hour after.

(22:09):
I don't watch him at all.
It was just in my recommended.
I'm like, how could you make a video out of this?
And he did.
He jumped out of his seat when they started talking about DLC.
Bruh.
Like you've gotta be kidding me.
No shade.
They're just making money.
And you know what?
A good majority of them I've watched for a very long period of time.

(22:31):
But I do think...
They're honestly, they're doing a great job.
Yeah, get that bag.
They're doing their...
Get that bag.
But yeah, I do think the visual was like...
The visual like Pokemon Cafe remix is announced and you're like running circles around your
room.
The fish is in the game!

(22:54):
It's like a Smash Brothers reveal.
You grab your like 30 inch Tetsugiri plush off the wall.
You're hugging it.
Now you gotta grind like what?
10,000 levels just to get that one Pokemon.
I don't know how the game works.

(23:18):
We also have no...
We can't really speak on anything about clickbait because I'm clickbaiting this video as Pokemon
presents nothing.
I don't think...
I love Pokemon YouTube for how oversaturated it is so it's not like...
These guys suck because of this.

(23:39):
I just think it's funny.
Although in a complete opposite tone of view, I just clicked into like halfway through a
drive reacting and he's giving the most dead-faced reaction to like the Pikachu plush being announced

(24:03):
for the Pokemon World Champion chance and there is nothing behind his eyes.
I'm like that's a cool Pikachu plush.
I was like I can't wait to see him being popped off but it's like most of this presents he
is sitting in his chair pretty much still nothing behind those eyes.

(24:24):
He's fallen asleep.
That is very funny.
He's the smartest Pokemon fan.
That was not what I was expecting.
He's been getting too much...
He's been playing Pokemon to sleep too much.
He's been getting too much of sleep.
He's a wild Pokemon fan.
No he's just grinding Pokemon sleep next to him.
That's why he has to stay still in his chair.

(24:45):
That's true.
Also it has to be the most dystopian thing that they just simply say like Pokemon sleep
has been like the reason...
Like gives you a reason to wake up or something.
I think they say something like that.
That is crazy.

(25:05):
