the talent tank podcast withyour host Wyatt Pemberton
bringing you the best, fastest, most knowledgeable personalities
and Ultra4 and off road racing
Wyatt Pemberton (00:20):
all right all
right. All right, here we go.
The talent tank. Little pre showaction going on here. We haven't
tried this before. But new newformat different format. I'm
experimenting but I'm not. Imean, we're literally gonna
carry the best and best insiderinformation you can get on with
me today. We got Mr. Miles, houseguest miles, how are you?
(00:40):
Oh, good, buddy. Yeah, thanksfor having me. It's been a lot
of fun chatting with you thelast you know, forever. But the
last few weeks we've been prettyin depth. And this should be a
fun show. And a K 2021 is asgoofy as 2020 was, we're gonna
have a good time. Well, thisshow right here. This is brought
to you brought to everyone byRCV performance. I gotta give a
(01:00):
hand out to these guys. Anyonewho listened to your this show
from the very beginning. I'mreally selective about who I
have on as advertisers and who Isaw my name with. And all the
advertisers I've had today havejust been the best pillars of
the community. I mean, we hadyour brand. At one point we had
mass performance magnitude, springs, and then we had a
(01:21):
custom splice out of Lawrence,Kansas. But man these guys are
CV performance we've known Milesand I both we've known Ricky
Berry over there, they're theirmarketing guy, you know they're
out of Rockford, Illinois. Andwe've known Ricky Kosh. He was
in high school when I first methim so this is back in the mid
2000s. I knew him before he hada driver's license and it's been
(01:42):
15 maybe 18 years back backbefore rock bouncing rock racing
or any of that was even a thingis just trail riding so Ricky
B's uh you know depth in thefour wheel drive and him filling
into RC visa a good fit. Oh,he's a great he's great over
there. And you know, with that, you know, I I support you know,
like you said, you you've heardme say this, I know you have a
same for what's your exact sceneof the support? You know, just
(02:06):
rcvs a great deal. So pleasesupport who supports this sport.
I like that, you know, you makeit rhyme and you make it real so
is is a tongue twister for me.
My thing is, you know, I want toalign the show align myself
align my personal brand and useas well Miles's align your brand
with, with companies thatrepresent what we like and, and,
and do. And with RCV. I mean, these guys 100%, American made
(02:27):
product 100% American made withAmerican made tooling. That's
how American these guys are.
They've been around since 1949.
They've been the last 20 years, their division RCV performance
where they've, they just threwout the book on what CV
manufacturing was. And whatever, whatever people thought it was
before these guys literally tookthe book and threw it out the
(02:48):
door. And I've heard their theirhead of the organization, Jim
Olson say that exact thing. Theythrew the book out the things
that they are doing with CVS
Unknown (02:58):
in that way that we as
an industry, we as a hobby
group, we as a family aretesting them. We're competitors,
we're test them in the thecraziest of climates, in the
craziest of situations, thecraziest races. If they make
something, we throw morehorsepower at it. If they make
something with a ton of angle,we asked him for more angle than
(03:20):
they've answered. And they'veanswered and they've answered
and look at it, like all the bignames running. I mean, I'm
trying to think of a big namethat doesn't run them and I
can't really think of too many.
They make an amazing product andthey get they get tested hard.
And they they prove themselves.
Yeah, look at the front of anyof the front running. utvs
actually the whole UTV field, let's look at them. Your jeeps
(03:40):
that are out trail riding any ofyour ultra for cars, look on the
front of those cars, and youwill see that orange you'll see
the orange Bell, the orange Belllike I mean, and when you set
you know you for me what I thinkabout when I see them I almost
think about like warm wincheswhat worn winches mean for
offroad and ultra for and youcan't hardly go off roading
without a warm winch. You can'thardly go off roading without an
(04:03):
RCV you know CV setup you knowand I mean, you obviously can go
wheeling without it but how muchis your time as on a weekend if
you're going to wreck wheelingeven you know how much time you
spend on the side of the trailfixing your axle compared to
just put the right stuff in thebeginning. You know you have
hundreds maybe 1000s of dollarsin the weekend you know and fuel
and and lodging and all thattime off. And you can be stuck
(04:26):
on the side of trail working onsomething so it's you know,
proofs in the pudding. arfi RCVhas figured out I prefer to
spend my time on the side of thetrail drinking beer not spinning
wrenches. Well, RC vperformance, RC v performance
comm hit them up. They will beon the lake bed they will be
vendors this year they've beenvendors, I think that this is
(04:47):
their 10th year in a row outsupporting the event. You know
they they are amazing. They willnot be selling products on the
lake bed to my knowledge and ifI understood correctly, that you
can still buy everything youwant. Have it dropship to
Your house, everything you need, they've got it online, or you
can call them, but they've got apromo code, co h 2021. That
(05:08):
you'll be able to use all theway until February the sixth of
2021. To get I believe it saysshow special, the 10% discount
that they would have offered onthe lake bed. They're offering
it up online now today, just youknow, in the Times ran, you
know, one, they don't need awhole product out there, too.
You don't need to you beswapping cash with them or
(05:29):
hauling off parts, you know, from the lake bed from them. But
RCB performance, guys, thank youfor supporting the show
supporting the talent tank. Andfor everyone listening, you
know, support those guys thatsupport us. All right, miles.
Here we go. So this is gonna befun, right? This is the hashtag
KH 2021 the talent tank pre showbrought to you by RCV
performance. It's miles wide andpure listening going. What? What
(05:53):
What do you expect? I mean, thisyear is 2020 was crazy racing
was out the door. And here weare. Kayla hammers is happening
in days, it's going off hammertown is mostly built. You can't
there's places in Los Angeles, you can't even eat in a
restaurant. And we're going toput on a race out in the desert.
If that doesn't tell you thehurdles and the insanity of what
(06:15):
Dave Cole and Alan Johnson andRyan Thomas, and Don King. Yeah,
the whole hammer King crews puttheir heart and soul into make
it happen. So huge shout out tothose guys for bringing it to us
so that they've dotted their I'scross the T's and lots and lots
of hurdles. I talk to Dave on aregular basis at this point. And
you can tell it in his voicehe's stressed as he's always
(06:37):
stressed, but I think there'sthis extra level, these guys
have moved mountains, they'vemade magic happen. And I saw
today people are starting to gettheir COVID test delivered to
the house. So we're gonna talkabout that here in a little bit
as well. But before we get totalking about COVID protocols, I
do want to say a couple thingsthat just you know are near and
dear to me on this guy's whenyou show up on the lake bed.
Just remember, all eyes are onus. Don't be that guy. And don't
(07:03):
give your the people that wantto see our event shut down.
Don't give me ammunition. If yousee someone doing something
along those lines, be anambassador for the sport. You
know, being an ambassador forthe family and say something,
say something to whoever thatis. This isn't you know, we're
not trying to stop somebodythat's bouncing off the rev
limiter on backdoor that shouldalways should happen. But just
make sure they have a mask on.
Okay, that's it and just like injust like in years past, I mean,
(07:25):
you know, we've been doing anamazing job, you know, just like
trash, pack it in, pack it out.
You know, that's a real deal.
And COVID All eyes are on us. Soit's it's for us to fails for us
to succeed. So I know I know us.
I know you guys, we can makethis happen. We just have to
work together and do it. So guyswhat to expect today. So miles
(07:48):
and I we're gonna go throughactually have some COVID
information that I want to passon the mitigation plan from from
hammer King. And then we'regonna dive into the meat and
potatoes. We've got some callins lined up with some really
cool, folks. We're gonna walkthrough a little bit of a
walkthrough on the racecourse.
And then we're gonna do a kindof a walkthrough of the classes
and talk about each class andwhat they have going on, or each
individual race and kind of whatthey have going on. Some of them
(08:09):
you know, we don't have a ton ofinformation on I'm not gonna lie
right now like the motos. I'mnot a moto guy. Like if anyone
has seen me ride two wheels. I'mnot good at it and just mildly
on a pit bike a few times.
That's what I meant. And itwasn't good. Was it? Not at all?
Yeah, it was good. I mean, wellthrow, right? Yeah, absolutely.
(08:31):
And everyone was like, hey, whycouldn't get on my pit bike. And
now now that's I know the worstwreck I ever had all pitbike was
headed a backdoor. We were allwearing. Yeah, yeah. A good
buddy. He was a beard. And, youknow, you're headed up there to
watch. I think we're just gonnahead head up and watch people
just bang on it. One evening, late night. So we're on. We're
(08:53):
on pit bikes. We're cruising upthere. And you know that
sandwashed just below backdoor.
I don't know what happened. ButI jumped off that thing and in
the front end washed out. Oh,completely. I hit the sand You
wrecked and you pop the beerthat was in your car and made it
look like a pitcher pants. Ithink I had two beers and each
jacket pocket and two beers andeach overall pocket or whatever
and, and to have exploded. Itwas a disaster. And I was cold
(09:16):
and it was wet. It was windy.
And it was awesome. I was somiserable. And y'all were just
laughing. But hey, I still hadlike six cold beers to a minor
broke while I was still good.
But that might have been thelast time you saw me ride.
That's and that's been someyears ago. Yeah, that covers Can
you the motors. Yeah, so wewon't talk about that much. But
we'll get there. We'll touch onthat. So that's kind of what to
(09:37):
expect. We're gonna roll throughthis, but I'm gonna dive into
COVID protocols real quick, kindof what to expect from what I
gleaned from what i've gleanedfrom talking to all the all the
crew over at a hammer King andan ultra for racing and the
information that they providedwith me, really there's,
there's, for me, boil it down.
(09:57):
There's two designations.
There's white riskbands and there's blue
wristbands. I'm gonna talk aboutthe white wristbands real quick.
That's probably the easiest.
That's for everybody that comesto the hammers that doesn't plan
to go into hammer town. You canget the gate you still pay your
30 bucks for the week long ofracing. And you just have to,
(10:18):
you know, pass the the basic ofa basically just a temperature
check. Yeah, yeah, you and youcan even get if you fail the
first temperature check, theywill bring a different
thermometer and check it again.
Now, if you fail the secondtime, they can't even let you
in, you won't even get a whitewristband. So just just FYI, on
that. But if you're good, youcan come You can come into the
hammers, pay your money, dowhatever you like, you just
(10:39):
can't go into hammer town.
That's the only limitation fromwhat I can tell with the white
wristband. But let's say youhave a white wristband, and you
decide, you know what, I'd likesome, you know, dang brothers
pizza, and I want to go inthere, I want to get some get,
give me some pizza. They havethe ready test the quick rapid
test at gate two right next tothe big March. big burly 20
(11:02):
bucks. 20 takes about 1515minutes, so it doesn't cost any
more to get into hammertone itjust, you know just have to
cover the cost of the rapidtest. And so you take that and
then they'll they'll swap outyour white wristband for a blue
wristband. And you know, Idropped in there that big March
would be sitting at gate two.
That's another change for thisyear. Merchants totally outside
that's on the outside of hammertown so you don't have to go
(11:24):
into hammer town. If you want tobuy king of the hammers
merchandise. It will be rightthere at gate two. Yeah, Roxy's
gonna be there. Excuse me busy.
She got her whole team. And theyjust showed up a couple days ago
and the they got a truckload ofstuff. So
I saw the guys like printing.
You know what the coolest thingthat I saw that they're making
is flannels. They've got flannelshirts. They've got like a red.
(11:45):
There's me. It's off. The gridflannels are slick. Yeah, they
are nice. And then they've got ablue like a royal blue. I like
both. I'm not a flannel guy, soI wouldn't look good in it. I
mean, I am I'm concerned aboutmy looks here, but they look
pretty badass. Like I saw likeBrian tried to pull it off
actually. Man. I feel like Ilook like with my my stature and
(12:06):
my goatee. I'd look like alumberjack I feel. Yeah, Yeah,
probably. Yeah. Paul Bunyan.
Only fatter? Yeah, lots oflaughs Brian Krause. I saw him
wearing a you know, someflannels last year I looked I
was like, man, Brian, youactually look pretty good.
You're handsome looking dudewearing flannel? And I'm like So
Brian cross can pull off theplan. Oh, hey, he's engaged back
(12:27):
off. This is true. This he's heis expecting he is with child.
Oh, I mean Bailey's with but youknow, yeah, it's roughly the
same thing. Same same thing. I'mgonna let that one go before
everyboycotts, boycotts us for making
light of all good fun. Oh, it'stotally all in good fun. So we
talked about, you know, the thewhite wristband, the white
(12:48):
wristband getting you into thehammers, or into lake bed into
Johnson Valley to JohnsonValley, and 92,000 acres. Yeah,
it's amazing. It's huge. Sosocial destiny at its finest.
Yeah. And as you get into thehammers, as you come to the
Welcome Gate, you will have youread the sign is a signage is
going to be everything. If youare a general admission look,
(13:10):
and you're looking for a whiteor a blue general mission,
you're going to go left, thereis going to be signage for you
to go left. For the guys that goright. Let's talk about them
real quick, your guys that aregoing to go right, they are
going to be vendor staff, competitors, crew media, third
guys that are pretty muchguaranteed that they need to be
they need to get someregistration paperwork and
(13:32):
guarantee that they're going toend up in hammer town prove with
the COVID test or the antibodiesor the vaccine or proof that
you've had COVID Yeah, sothere's two complete options
there right there's basicallyyou need to meet the protocol
for a mission to hammer town andto meet that you need to provide
a negative COVID test result orproof of antibodies or the
(13:53):
vaccine test results that arevalid for seven days seven days
prior to your first entrance.
That's right That's right andthen submit to a self administer
or you can submit to a selfadministered on site you can
purchase at the Welcome Gate orat big March and that'd be if
you had a white wristband theregate two you could get swapped
to a blue for anyone who isunable to read or refuses to
(14:15):
provide the those results theyjust won't they won't be granted
access to hammer town at thatyou know that they're there for
blue the blue one you know it'sgonna provide you access to
those controlled areas. That'sreally the gist that we need to
get out there that if you seefolks wearing a white wristband
in hammer town they shouldn't bethere they haven't you know
(14:38):
totally been tested i mean it'sit's simple it you know,
everybody be smart have funwe're you know, we want this
race to happen just as bad asyou guys so it's simple we got
to play by the rules and andyou'll put the sign off we've
seen you know, time and timeagain, everything's getting
postponed canceled, but okay, which is happening. So let's
let's let's make it happen. It'sup to us. So let's talk about
(14:58):
that exactly what that means.
Looks like at the Welcome Gate.
If you come in your crew stuff, vendor media, or even if you're
coming in as for the whitewristband, just ga watch the
event signage, I can't expressthat enough, the signage should
be correct and accurate forwhich direction where do you go?
When you pull up, when you pullup k wait staff members will
(15:19):
approach the driver passengerwindows depending on how many
people are in the car and wherethey're at. And they will,
they're assuming that you know, you're you're looking for access
to come in. And what they'll dois they're going to take your
temperature, if your temperatureis below the the threshold, and
you provide your negative test, then you can park and you can go
(15:39):
into the the tent there, thereception tent, the welcome
tent, and get your packets andget your correct wristbands, and
all your normal signage andwhatnot, all your normal
signage. But the key is, do notexit your vehicle until after
kmh staff have told you, you aregood to go. Now there will be
plenty of people direct and use.
(16:02):
So just like normal, just payattention. Be calm, be
courteous, and patience. Now,will there be issues and hang
ups and slip ups and chaos?
Yeah, there's going to be a lotthere's gonna be some of that.
So because it's a learning curvefor everybody. I mean, it's
gonna be a fluid situation.
What's today we don't know. Imean, we don't know what's gonna
happen. But uh, but the hammerKing guys are doing their best
(16:25):
and, and let's face it, it's upto us to make it happen. So So
Have some patience, have somegrace, you'll be on the lake bed
pretty quickly, hey, I skippedover I glossed over the
threshold for that temperaturetest. It's 100.4 credit. And
that's kind of it, I thinkthere's you know, hammer King is
doing a lot along those lines toensure that their staff is safe.
The media staff is safe. I knewas of yesterday, they you know,
(16:48):
the onsite Delta for staff, there's about 40 of them
outdoors, plus, yep, plus, they'd all tested negative. And
so they've been doing a verygood job of trying to keep
themselves separated from fromthe public and from interactions
outside of their tight group of44 horse marking for tents set
up for building the utilities, the infrastructure that all go
into hammer town. So kudos tothose guys. And you can, you
(17:10):
know, obviously go into ultrafor racing COMM And lots of this
COVID information is on there.
So if there's any updates, youknow, Alan's on the ball with
it, he'll be either sending outemails or updating the website
so just, you know, payattention. This will you know,
obviously air Monday, thingscould change, but it's looking
good. Yeah, it's a dynamicsituation. I think we you know,
what are we we're nine monthsinto shelter in place for 14
(17:32):
days.
10 months? It's kind ofridiculous. I mean, it really is
ridiculous. And it really is,you know, it's crazy that in in
say, this is the new normal.
This isn't the new normalnormal. No, this is insane.
There will be light at the endof the tunnel. Yeah, there will
be This is insane at its finest.
But you know, we're gonna jumpthrough the hoops because we
(17:54):
want to see racing, our friendswant to race. We want to race,
our business, livelihoods, etcetera, et cetera, et all all
kind of, you know, land on thisand just like the ultra for
family, we figured out just likeon the side of the racecourse,
you figure it out. We're gonnaget through this together. But
it takes all of us It absolutelydoes. The next thing is face
mask. And mask up guys, that's Iabsolutely hate mask. I mean,
(18:19):
I'm gonna tell you right now, Iabsolutely. You mean hate it,
you know, on a daily basis, Iwear it a couple times a day,
usually from the front of therestaurant to the seat to my
seat, and somehow COVID staysover the top of my head. But,
you know, we're gonna be outthere in the public in the land
on federal land. And oh, andthere's a new executive by the
rules. Yeah. Wear mask. If youare, you know, obviously, if
(18:41):
you're in your toder home oryou're in your trailer, you're
in your race tent. That'sanother story. But be smart
foot. Yeah. And then watch thesix foot thing as best you can.
But if you're out just strollinghammer town. I mean, it's not
that much different. I know Ialways have a buff on anyway, or
bandanna just for the dust. It'snot, I don't think it's gonna be
(19:02):
that big of a change. I reallydon't at this point. And while
we're talking about that, youknow, so one of the things that
ultra for is doing is uh, thethe drivers meetings will be on
a on a network via zoom. Sothat's going to be one thing
that's that we are or thathammer King is doing to help
with the COVID situation is andit'll be actually kind of nice
because you can hear and see alot better and not have a bunch
(19:24):
of people in one tent. socrazy things yeah, great segue
on that miles. Yeah, so they'regonna hammer King is set up a
hammer town network. I believeit's only gonna be available and
that's just the internet, right?
Yeah, I believe so. I don'tknow. I mean, this is a but this
is Travis Walder level. This isabove my paygrade is Yeah.
(19:45):
savant level internet going on.
Now. They are going to bebroadcasting the live feed and
the drivers meetings are goingto be on a local network
broadcast in the hammer townvicinity. As soon as all hammer
town will be covered. I betthere's gonna be some bleed over
where you probably will watch iton your phone or what
We're outside of hammer town.
But that's, you know, what yousee on the big screen is what
you should be able to see onthis local network. I'm not sure
(20:06):
how that works, I don't know, ifit's hardwired and you get a
plug up in, in every pitlocation, or if it's Wi Fi
enabled, I don't know, I hadn'thad that conveyed to me. But I
was very, very excited to hearabout this kind of local
network. So when it comes tolike drivers meeting stuff, if
you aren't comfortable beingthere with, you know, everybody
else that tries to cram intothat tent, you don't need to
(20:29):
that you can catch it elsewhere.
And you'll be able to, tocontact him working 24 seven via
that that network to you know, may not be an instant reply, but
they will be monitoring that 24seven, so there'll be constant
contact between you know, anyracer hammer King all that jazz.
So should you know it's going tobe a goofy year, but we're gonna
(20:49):
we're gonna make it happen.
Yeah, and that said there is aCOVID-19 coordinators name's Rob
minor, he'll typically bestationed somewhere around gate
two, you know, you can alwaysget anybody with a with hammer
King, or ultra for racing, youcan get relayed over to rob for
COVID issues on whether manthat's gonna be 151 point 65
everyone should have that onememorize. If you're an off road
(21:10):
racing, you should know whatchannel weatherman is. And what
that call out is. Also, youshould be able to get them on
hold for for ultra for one. AndI don't know how many people
have that in the radio, butthat's a 150 1.7 100. And that's
a good one to remember. I don'tknow if you need that tattooed
on your wrist or whatever, that's a good one to know. But
weatherman 151 point 65 you canalways get a hold of hold for
(21:31):
four across there, or ultra forone, obviously, don't turn your
mic on there and then push it inand then shove it between the
seats and drive off. People willfind you and kill you. I mean,
that's just how that's going towork on a stuck mic. But if you
do have an emergency and you doneed to get a hold of someone
operational support COVID-19coordinator or just have other
(21:51):
issues. Everyone knows thosefrequencies will are effective,
like a 911 for the lake bed.
Okay, guys, and use themsparingly. That's not for that's
not for going and asking if youcan get pizza delivered to your
toaster. That's four, you've gota problem. Okay. All right,
(22:12):
moving on. Let's go. Let's go.
Let's talk about the live feed.
I mean, so we've kind of talkedabout it, you started it up.
live feed is unchanged, unchanged. Well, it's kind of
changed. We don't have it intoWell, it's augmented, but it's
subtracted we subtracted theeuros. So you know we've removed
the accent guys. I mean, I don'twant to say that about our buddy
(22:33):
Jim Marsden and that he's notgoing to be there I don't want
to say that about our buddy beenmappi air nappy hair been won't
get a fill in and jump in youknow all of our foreign guys
that aren't able to make it tothe race so we are in a lot of
behind the scene guys are goingto get so we're gonna miss all
our all our foreigners heavilyso yeah, but tune in. We'll be
(22:54):
there in spirit. They willabsolutely. I mean, and a lot of
hammer. A lot of hammer towngets built but a lot of euros.
Come on for that. You know,Chris spoiler alert, man. I just
Crosland Ian. I mean, just allof them. I love them all.
There's certain there's anothercouple that I will not say their
name because we like, why Ican't believe you didn't say my
name. But the big guy. We knowthe big guy. The big guy will
(23:17):
not be there. And I don't meanagain. I don't mean to cherry.
Love all you guys. Sorry. Youguys aren't gonna make it but
let's talk about the live feedreal quick. We're going to be
short, Jim Marsden. But the livefeed is still awesome. This year
we gain a Pam Hall. Pam Hall isamazing. She was actually on the
talent tank a month ago or amonth or so ago. amazing woman
she's really coming up in herown as an announcer an ultra for
(23:38):
today. She's out marketingcourse with JT Taylor. We're
gonna ring her here in a littlebit. We might not get her we may
get her We'll see. I talked toher early this morning. But with
Emily and the normals Do we haveyou know Ricky Johnson, he and
Ian Johnson not related. Youknow, Scott rain. He's been with
us for a long time. We've addeda Tiffany stone you've
recognized her she does lots ofreporting. She'll be at the
remote pit one, I believe. Andwe'll have a Larry Ross there's
(24:01):
gonna be guests. We have a fewmore other guests. That could be
But yeah, I mean, the the hosttown is going to be thick. And
we'll bring you the best liveshow we can and pay per view
this year. I mean, that's gonnabe fun. I'm excited about the
pay per view. And the pay perview sounds like Oh, man, you
know, we got to pay more money.
Let me tell you what you getright right now $35 It gets you
every race on the live feed forthe year. It This is
(24:23):
augmentation to the live feed.
So this looks more like NFLaccess. This looks like the
NASCAR garage stuff. It's wherethere will be some in car there
will be some in car radio. So ifyou just want to listen to Jason
shear, I believe he's one of thedrivers that they are trying to
wire up to his frequency. Soyou'll hear you know how his
race is going. I believe ShannonCampbell was another the was
(24:44):
thrown out for guys that havebeen approached about so you
will be locked in. Or if youjust want to see the action on
backdoor. You can have the livefeed up on one side and you can
have your pay per view access, you know on another monitor or
on your phone or on another TVor whatever, and just have that
thing you know locked in rightnow.
mailbox and watch the back doorbut remember that you know we
are it's not pay per view onlythe live show will still be
(25:06):
there is this is just added tolike you said the in car the in
video there's gonna be an extraheli feed I believe so it's you
know it's 10 bucks for the weekor 35 for the year it's worth it
you don't know how much moneyDave invests in the live show
how much stuff they play with atry with so this just a little
bit to help him because it youknow, he spends a ton of money
and it's not free so you know 35bucks for whole season well
(25:29):
worth it do it and and we'regonna bring you one hell of a
show and back to the live showis you don't have to come and
hammers stay at home if youwant. The live shows amazing. I
mean, well, let me tell mystory. Yeah.
Alright, so I'm terrible. I'mgonna strip everyone's gonna
realize that this is my this ismy why it's a life hack on King
(25:50):
of the hammers. It's, I'mterrible about I'm gonna call
myself out here. So since 2014,I was to race in 2014. We had a
radiator issue, couldn't repairit. I raced Parker a couple days
before and ended up on the roaddriving home to Texas, on the
Friday of the 4400 race end uprealizing the coverage is
(26:10):
amazing. So pretty much sincethen, I have missed the 4400
race, and this year will be nodifferent. I am flying. You come
out to the hammers, hang outwith the boys. check everything
out. The hands, kiss the babies.
And then you go home and sit onyour couch and watch it. Well,
yes and no, usually I'm drivingso I'm somewhere in West Texas
last year. I happen to IExactly. Last year, I just
(26:33):
happened to be pulling I pulledin my driveway after 24 hours on
the road. And I sat down and inthe next 30 minutes. Josh
Bleiler Marcos Gomez and EricMiller, you know, cross the
finish line and just so you'reyou are watching from the couch
when Josh beiler is upside downfor 30 minutes. Yes. And blue
motor? Yes, absolutely. I wasand I was freaking out. And then
(26:56):
I and then the helicopter chaseon Marcos Gomez. And you can see
a arm get ripped off as hetotally wadded that up. It was
insanity. And yes, I got towatch it from my couch. I wasn't
sitting there was no sitting Iwas standing up. And I've been
up for 20 some hours at thatpoint. And I'm jumping up and
down stressed out about and itwas the coverage. You were
(27:17):
there. But you were there there.
I watched it with you throughyour eyes. And it was the live
coverage was amazing. I don'twant to you know, tell people
don't come to lake bed becausethe the atmosphere in the event
itself is amazing. But I flyout. Then this year, I fly home
on Friday evening, I get into toHouston sometime before 10pm.
(27:37):
And then I'm gonna wake up, eatsome breakfast and turn on the
live show. And be ready for afull day of watching the
insanity. I'm ready. I'm soready for so. And again, with
COVID. We do encourage the liveshow, you know, if you're, you
know, have any inkling of notcoming don't watch the live
show. I mean, last year, we had3 million unique views. And that
(28:01):
was 30% up from 2019. And we'rehoping to do that again. We're
hoping for 4 million views thisyear. So and that goes back to
you guys sharing with yourfriends, friends, family, get on
the Instagram, hashtag Get up,get on the Facebook, start a
watch party hit the sharebutton. Like you know, tell your
friends tell your family let'slet's let's ultra fours.
Awesome. That's my passion.
Obviously. That's your passion.
(28:22):
If you're listening to this, that's your passion too. So
well. Let's make ultra foramazing. I love it. I'm so far
on this show. It sounded like abig commercial, right? You've
heard about RCV. We've told youwe've talked at you about COVID
protocols. We're all kind ofalmost numb to those. But I just
want to get the rightinformation in front of you.
We've told you the live show isjust exactly what it is. So now
(28:43):
at this point, we need to getinto in my zone if this is a
commercial are we getting paid?
I don't I try not to cuss I justabout dropped an F bomb there.
Oh, no. So I am doing this. Youknow, we're lucky to have our CV
performance, you know, coveringthe editing bill and in some of
(29:03):
the cost around that.
Oh, I will give you beard. How'sthat all I need your girl? I'm
not. But I'm not good aboutgetting your beer though. So
I'll make the promise. And thennext year now I'm like, oh, one
bottle of water. While thewater. Wow. Yeah. So let's let's
let's get into race stuff. let'sget let's get away from kind of
(29:24):
the administrative section ofthe of this show. Let's talk
about what people dial in. Imean, at this point, they're 30
minutes in on an ad. Nobodywants to hear that. So yeah, now
this part gets easy. This partgets fun. We'll just yeah, we'll
roll it. This is gonna be thegood stuff. All right. So did we
cover all the information Ithink we need to get I think we
did. Right? Oh, probably not.
But enough of it. Enough isenough that I can remember. So
(29:46):
that said course the course isreleased on Wednesday at noon,
right? Thursday at noon. Are yousure? Nope. I thought it was
Wednesday. I'm pretty sure it'sThursday. But we'll do that.
heckler. Sorry, guys, I mightyou know, we're lying. It
doesn't really matter to us. Wedon't really care. But what we
do care about is we can talk toyou guys about you know, the
(30:08):
first loop first loop 76.4miles. That's loop a loop B is
40 miles. You know the meat andpotatoes here Thursday at noon,
it opens pre running. Yeah, there you go. Oh, what did I
write down Wednesday? I'm notvery good with this stuff.
Apparently. The pits a remotepit at very small 15 remote pit
at Rice race miles 61. So onlytwo remote pits unlike past
(30:31):
years, that's right and remoteto is where to be was last year.
So there's no two A is just twois where to be was. And so that
really puts it with there's nopits? Well, let's well on your
back off that. Let me back offthat. Let's start you know, the
desert race desert race. Thoseguys gonna be 117 miles so
(30:52):
they're gonna get a loop B. Andactually, I'm sorry about that.
That loop be the 40 miles.
That's just for the desert race.
I'm sorry. That's 117 miles.
Loop B should have all the rocktrails in it right now for the
desert. Not for the desert. Butfor everybody else. Yeah, yeah.
I mean, we've got that going. SoI've got a I've got a couple
(31:13):
little things here real quick.
Man, I was looking at thecourse. Wow, Is this right? Did
they really say these guys aregoing up? LFA
Yeah, I believe so. Yeah, Ithink that's gonna be the last
three if I'm not mistaken. And Iwas talking to JT and he said
it's no punk this year. It'sgonna be tough as hell to pay
(31:35):
and then that new kingsgraveyard like we're going back
to rock crawling. Well, I sawthat I saw the Kings graveyard
stuff from Cody. And in that'sCody Wagner. He went out and
showed some videos. These guysare coming down that trail
right? Yeah, they're coming downin Well, I don't know I mean it
it looks it looked gnarly. I didlike the the flyover the Googler
(31:57):
flyover how insane that lookswith the verticals doesn't look
like there's any real good placeyou know, like a lot of the
other rock trails looks likethere's some good bypasses up on
the sides of the mountain thisdidn't look like any of that.
Yeah, I don't think there's anybypasses it's you're gonna have
to go down the the tough toughpart and I think we know Dave
was talking in the pre show thatyou're gonna be coming down that
(32:19):
more than likely in the dark andwe'll have all the rigid lights
haven't lit up for for safety, but also for the camera crew.
It's gonna be awesome to have tohave that all lit up for for
everybody back on watch and Ican't wait it's gonna be an epic
finish. Yeah, I mean every yearis an epic finish but this one
(32:39):
should be extra crazy. And thenthe other thing I had no so we
talked about key tree you knowand we talked about the course
we talked about hella pay youknow as we kind of roll into the
show as hammers opens there's alot of work that goes into it
and I know someone like I said Imentioned Pam Hall earlier she's
gonna be joining you here in alittle bit for this year. We're
(33:01):
gonna call her and I believe sheis out on court she's already
been there for a few dayshelping with everything I think
she's out with JT as we speaktrying to mark course so yeah,
I'm trying to get to the pointwhere actually so she's texting
with me. That's that that's signone and let me let me plug my
phone in and see if I can raiseher
(33:31):
well I'm not getting there butwe'll see if she comes back real
quick. We'll drop this well Iguess if she is out marketing
courses at the racecourse justnot go by the cell phone bush.
No, I think that one at leastnot at this time of the day.
Well, so that's alright, we canjump forward. We're gonna move
on to basically after hammers isopen the first event that we
(33:52):
have going on pretty awesome.
It's an amazing weekend we dothe whole schedule got shifted.
So this one is now the toy tiresdesert challenge opening
weekend. Presented by MonsterEnergy. This is going to be
awesome. I mean, there's we'retalking the B twos versus the B
three grudge match returningempty class 11 showdown.
Nothing's presented by bajajerky. That's you know B ones
versus t twos the battle thelight bed. And then of course I
(34:15):
mean the toy tires desertchallenge. I mean, the T
boys drives me. And if youhaven't heard one of these guys
ground pound past you and justthumping your heart you know as
they go by you're missing out onlife. I mean, there's the only
thing I can say that is close tohaving BJ Baldwin or Andy
(34:37):
McMillan or came steel camps togo by you at 110 miles an hour.
Right? They're throwing rocks, slinging rocks. The only thing I
can compare that to is Top Fueldragsters just watch one launch.
So so quick story on that I wasrolling with you at the moment.
And we're on the we're racingthe unicorn and we're heading
across that lake bed and somepretty good dust. I'm gonna say
(34:58):
we're doing a you know, rightaround 100
And all of a sudden we get blownby by I don't know who it was.
And I haven't been scared manytimes that scared the devils out
of me.
Yeah, well, I mean, we were thatwas the the nursing issue right?
We hada we got hot and it was crazy.
We couldn't run we should havebeen running 130 135 across that
lake, but at that point, we didhave clean air. We were on the
(35:21):
right side of the dust, but wehad to slow down because we
started getting hot. And next, you know, I want to say was
Tracy graph, and we go, okay, racy graph, blurred probably
4040 miles an hour faster. Oh,whoa, we were going 100. Yeah.
There. I do love that. But youknow what that means? If we're
going to talk about, you know, the Toyo tires desert challenge
(35:42):
and desert trucks. We got to doone thing. This just sticks we
got to call Austin fishforeigner of dialing up. Fish
logistics.
logistics.
See if we game see how manyrings it takes for him to
answer.
Hello, fish. Hey, what's goingon man? All right, so here we
(36:04):
are. We've got Austin fishforeigner on the phone. Thanks
for picking up fish. Thanks foragreeing to come on the talent
tank. You've got no problemyou've got miles miles the the
the sexy voice of hammer town.
And then myself. And, you know,we're calling to talk to you
about something that's coming uphere and I guess 10 days away,
you know, five days away sevendays away something like that.
(36:25):
It's very very soon. Desertracing, trophy trucks class ones
and I know they have differentnames we'll talk about that and
we're gonna laugh about thatbecause I know your take on that
Yeah. And and what's going to goon down at Keene the hammers for
basically what's going to be nowthis desert racing weekend
before the whole rock racingweek starts. And man you're our
proxy man your might you're thego to guy in my book with fish
(36:48):
just sticks your your operationover there at fish, just six on
Instagram. On Facebook, you livefeed live stream and cover every
desert race all about love andlove. All the updates are
awesome. Yeah, man, you're theguy. Right? So we're gonna talk
to you know, we can call trophytruck drivers. We know those
guys. I mean, they come try torace on our turf. You know,
(37:10):
they're trying to learn what thehammers are about.
And I even remember, there,there's a brace that's actually
coming up, that's actually youknow, got canceled. It got
punted to, you know, six, eightmonths in the future from now,
but kinking hammers is going on.
I remember when those guys cameand tried to lure one of the
hammers folks to help them buildthe equivalent of a hammer town
(37:33):
for their event. It just neverhappened. It was terrible. Well,
Austin does is crazy. He has aright what Dave does is
absolutely great. And he's a bigidea guy, and I think everyone
knows works. does. So we want totalk to you fish. We're gonna
we, I think my idea of how thisis gonna go. This is obviously
(37:53):
the first pre show, as you know,I know you've done plenty of pre
shows, for races littleprologues? Yeah, I think it's
kind of along those lines. Butthis is new, right. This formats
new last year. How many deserttrucks? Did we have racing at
Keno hammers last year?
Yeah, you know, that's a goodquestion. I think it was it was
less than than a dozen or so. Ithink it was.
(38:17):
Yeah, I think it was about that.
And by the time the racestarted, you know, a couple
broken qualifying. I think itwas only about 10 maybe maybe 12
that that started the actualrace itself. And then by the end
of the first lap, I think it wasabout half that that was still
good. Because it's a race, brutal and gnarly in this year,
just to throw it out there. Thenumber that I have in front of
me at this point in time, whichwe already know that numbers
(38:37):
actually grew today even isthere's currently 88 registered
desert entries. Now I'm guessingcloser to 100 by the time it
comes up to it. Yeah. But that'snot all trophy trucks are
the ones Yeah, we're gonna takethat segue and we're gonna we're
gonna take the tangent right nowbecause Austin's take on this is
(38:57):
is even funnier than mine.
trophy trucks or trophy trucksright? Our t ones trophy x.
Yeah, it's all the same thingyou can call whatever you want
call it trophy trucks toy trucktrucks call it unlimited trucks
called t ones. I don't care.
They're their trophy trucks.
You know, not everybody'sallowed to call him that. And we
are we are we can and so thenyou know for so for King of the
(39:19):
hammers. The desert weekend.
We've got, um, just walk throughthem here we've got the T ones.
For normal nomenclature. That'sthe trophy trucks. We've got the
T tubes. That's 6100 spectrucks. We've got the B ones. I
don't know.
One car it is it's a class onecar then we've got the beat us.
(39:39):
The B two guys are saying carclass tins. And as we go through
these actually I want to jumpback up trophy trucks. The T
ones that's unlimitedhorsepower, unlimited travel.
That's an unlimited engineeredvehicle. Unlimited everything
unlimited budget, budget.
Unlimited country clubs,unlimited.
(40:00):
You know, so then we jumped tothe T twos the 6100 that's a
spec truck. That's a spec T one.
It's got shorter arms and acrate motor a sealed crate
motor, correct? Yeah, that'swhat the the 6100 is Yeah, it's
a spec spec motor. Basically, the arms are not spec or any of
that thing. It's basically justa spec motor, everyone else uses
(40:20):
the same motor. Other than thatyou can have your own brand
aren't it's not like the likethe trophy s for example, where
they're all built by the samemanufacturer. So it is a spec
class to a certain extentbasically the motor is the most
spec out of it, but they have tobe narrower right there's like a
max width on on them correct?
You know, I think it depends onwhat organization you're in. I
(40:42):
don't even know rememberactually off the top of my head
now I don't even think there isthere might be there might be I
know they had a tire size limitthere the tire size limit they
weren't allowed to run like the40 inch tires. So they limit it
to smaller tire before Yeah, sothat that there is a tire size
limit Other than that, you knowsome of the organizations have
changed the rules recently. Ifyou raise just for example if
your racing score it had adifferent motor size than the
(41:04):
desert there was different sothat you know as a spec motor
there was different spec sizes Ibelieve most of them have gone
to the bigger motor now thisyear and what's the ballpark
ballpark horsepower on this wellthe T ones you have some guys
that now are over 1000 are closeto 1200 horsepower with these
these big blocks have in thereand there's there's no limit you
know, you could throw a twinturbo on there and you get you
(41:24):
know over 1200 horsepower, thethe spec trophy trucks they're
right around 500 I think it'sactually like 530 something like
that pretty close to that andthat's what they're they're
limited to so you have overdouble the horsepower in these
into T ones versus the T twosnow. Okay, and then as we move
forward to the kind of nextclasses down we've got the B
ones which would be theunlimited buggies what we know
(41:47):
is a class one you know they aslong as they fit the Is it the
best in the desert be one scorewell once again it is different
no matter where you go so to mepoloncarz is a class one car
investment desert they'reactually class 1500 cars so
they're the number 1500something you know 1500
investment desert score theirclass one car everybody calls
(42:09):
with a class one car so theirclass one car now is that but
that needs to be a buggy rearend not a solid axle rear end
after the Justin Davis playingYeah, actually it was the it was
the herps kind of that thatinitially kind of came out with
the truggy a lot of everybodyknows what the drug is pretty
much that racing class one butit was a solid interaxial so
then some other people starteddoing the same thing later and
(42:31):
then score finally made a rulethat you cannot raise the solid
rear axle in class one day goesby those same rules are not
because they've hasn't reallyhad a v one class before so I
don't know which set of rulesplaying with so you might be
able to sneak in a solid axle ifyou wanted to race and take the
body off. I don't know if that'sallowed or not yet days race.
Some of our guys are in thatclass with us all that rear axle
(42:53):
if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, thereare some 4400 cars in there. Or
you go Yeah, hits then we moveddown we've got the the C tins
the the v2, right the classtins. And that's a an Ecotec.
Basically, it's a buggy, butwith unlimited travel, correct.
But your what your issue is,you're it's a spec motor or
(43:14):
limited motor. So then youreally want to be light. So they
tend to be very light vehicles, right? Yep, that's a class 10
car. Yeah, it's got a limitedmotor. It's a sealed motor, same
basic concept as the spec truckclass. It's just the buggy
version of it. Really. They arevery fast. They can be four
wheel drive. There's no ruleabout that. As of right now,
once again, you know, with Daverunning it, I don't know his
(43:36):
exact rules on that class. Ithink it's pretty open. But I
believe you're just gonna haveto have that. That same motor in
that class. And just to go backreal quick now that you
mentioned that there is some4400 cars racing and the B class
and I had a trophy truck that Iknew I couldn't go out there and
be Bryce Menzies and I wouldtake the body off and I'd go
enter in the B class and have agood shot at winning that and
(43:57):
just cuts off all the buggyguys. That's what I would do.
Hey, there might be a late entrywith you and me, right, we're
gonna go find one. Yeah, therewe go. I'm sure there's plenty
sit on the sideline with theraces that have gotten punted.
So exactly, then the next classwe move down, we've got the
desert utvs the B threes, rightthis this is you know, we have
UTV that is racing during Kinghammers you know, the the the
(44:20):
four drives, but these are theguys that they can before drive,
but it's still you know, desertUTV so guy could run the same
car on on Saturday and then runit the following that Wednesday,
miles on Thursday, have a run atthe following Thursday. So we've
got that but now there's ashootout so as we as we work
through this, right, we've gotthe beat you know, leading off
(44:41):
the Toyo tires desert challengeweekend. You know this presented
by Monster Energy. We've got theB two versus B three grudge
match. That's the class tinsversus the desert utvs this is b
two versus B three. And this isan ongoing forever now we've got
these utvs that are running 35inch tires. The
The lines are blurring a lot, aren't they? Yeah, I mean, uh,
(45:04):
you know, a buggy is you know,UTV nowadays is basically a
class 10 car, these these raceutvs are not like your standard,
you know, golf carts thateverybody used to call, they're
not even close to that anymore, they're closer to an actual
class 10 car and therefore willdrive. So you have a big
advantage. The disadvantage youhave in most of these is that
they have a belt, they don'thave a real transmission. Now
(45:25):
you have the Honda and theYamaha that both have a real
transmission, but they don'thave a turbo. So now they're
down on power compared to theother ones. So the class handcar
is still going to beat them inmy opinion, I don't think
they're going to be able to beatthem just because of how rough
this course is. The class 10quarter will get them there and
a class 10 car has a higher topend speed. They'll do over 100
miles an hour and a class 10car, you're not going to go 100
(45:46):
miles an hour, maybe nine high90s ish in a UTV, but they're
going to get the sense they'regoing to beat them in my
opinion. I kind of tend toagree. But and it's kind of
anybody's day, miles, what isthe what's the purse for that
race? So the the purse for thatrace, I believe is 25 K. Yeah, I
believe it's it. So there's over$500,000 for the whole week. And
(46:11):
that one's Yeah, I think there's25 k on the line for that one.
That's That's nuts. I wentthrough kind of the the entry
there's a lot of cars signed up.
And like I said, they're kind ofgrown by the day. So no double
that 50 grand. Oh, that's a 50grand, that's $1,000 purse
between the shootout. But thatgrudge match between the B twos
and the threes. That's crazy. Imean, I mean, fish that should
(46:35):
draw a big car count, correctthat if you if you're in desert
javaee or if you're in a youhave a B two car, you got the
shot at a $50,000 purse. Youknow, honestly, you know, and
I'm always straight up. And Ithink that's why people like
what I have to say, honestly, Iam surprised that this entry
list is not much bigger than itis I really am. Because for that
(46:57):
reason that you just said, thisis the most money that any of
these cars I've ever raised for,you would think that there would
be just tons of them out there.
Because there's a ton of tankcars out there. There's a ton of
new TVs out there. I don't knowwhy the entry list isn't bigger,
honestly, like the guys that arethere. There's a lot of good
fast guys, but I think a lot ofpeople are gonna be both race
(47:17):
this race. Yeah, I think they'regonna be, you know, kind of
thrown back when it gets done.
Now I, you know, I know peoplerun out to the ultra for racing
website and look at who's signedup. I do know, after a
conversation that we had lastnight with the guys over here
marking the entries are a littlebit behind on days, and they've
been flooded with entries. Sowhen we look at the, like, when
(47:37):
we look at the T one list, the Tone list? I don't know, I think
it has 15 or 20. It's not a ton.
But I do know that yesterday, there was a conversation with
herb, someone from herorganization reached out asking
course questions, and it camedown to where they were coming
from was, do we bring threetrucks? Or do we bring five
(47:59):
trucks? And so yeah, if we havethings like that going on, I
mean, there's still time to getentries in. Dave, we'll take
your money and let you line upfor the green flag. This will
happen. Yeah, for sure. Forsure. And then at the same time,
there is at least four cars fort ones that are on that entry
list that aren't coming to therace that I know of personally.
So you know, in the end, maybeit'll kind of even out but i
(48:20):
think you know, the T one classspecifically, this is a very
hard race for that class becauseyou have guys like Bryce Menzies
showing up, who if Bryce Menziesdoes not have a bad day, no one
is going to beat Bryce Menziesthat I see on the century list
that I know is coming to thisrace. There's some guys that
could get really close, but ifBryce has a perfect day,
honestly, he's gonna win, like, and that's, that's just how it
is. And these other guys knowthis, and it's pretty much a
(48:42):
winner take all race. And Ithink that's kind of why you
don't see you know, quite asmany people showing up for it.
Is it awesome? Yeah, it's reallycool. You get to say you're the
best of the best. But at thesame time, you got guys like
Bryce who other people are like, well, I can't beat them. So some
guys, you know, don't come forthat reason. I think that's
fair. he's a he's a very formerolder, formidable driver.
(49:04):
Yeah, yeah. I mean, I mean, lastyear, you saw, you know,
obviously Luke McMillan. He washe was there but Luke Newton.
None of the Macmillan's arecoming this year. So like Dan
McMillan, Andy McNeil and LukeMcMillan they're on the list,
but they're not coming. So youreally you know, the
competition. There's still someguys there like obviously Bryce
Matthews is the clear favorite, but you have guys like Cameron
Sinclair coming that you knowwho Cameron will be right there.
Cameras doing pretty much everyrace there isn't this king of
(49:25):
hammers thing. So he'sdefinitely going to have some
some course Simon. This will beone of the first races that he
does, but you know, stillCameron knows that it does it
really well. So I think it'sgonna be fun to watch. You know,
Bryce and Cameron specificallythose two battle and out of
those two are my favorites onthe on the list that I see. We
like all those guys. Absolutely.
I'm gonna jump forward just alittle bit to the next thing.
The next battle of the lake bedis the next race that I've got
(49:49):
listed here. The B ones versusthe T twos. Is that really is
that really a thing or see itclass ones in 6100s? Is that
really shapedmade up to be a feud Is that
real? I, I'm a little bitdisconnected from the desert
world from when I was racingclass one. And I never had a
problem with the 6100 they werealways behind us or if I had a
(50:10):
problem, and I had to work myway through, it was never a
problem working my way throughthem. Actually miles who's on
here, miles kodra with me for anevent where we had an issue and
and we had to work throughbasically the whole 6100 pack.
And it wasn't, it wasn't aproblem. We worked through the
whole pack pretty quickly. So isthere really a C one versus
(50:33):
6100? grudge there? I don'tthink so. Honestly, I don't
think it's gonna be close. Ithink the class one cars, we're
gonna smoke the 6100 trucks. Imean, the class one cars have,
you know, 800 horsepower, theyhave more travel. Let me bad
thing. Class one cars, comparedto a 6100 6100 truck is one of
the most durable and have theirlimited on motor, but they're
(50:57):
built like a trophy truck. It isa trophy truck, basically a
smaller motor, so you can drivea 6100 truck almost floored the
whole day. And it doesn't reallygo fast enough to hurt itself
with a good driver in it. Wherethese class one cars go freakin
fast. I mean, you can get crazyin a class one car look at guys
like Josh Daniels. Some of theseguys just do hair, things, you
know, and and they break a lot.
(51:20):
They really do they break youknow, they have CDs they have
they're not as strong as a 6100truck, but they're way faster.
So just looking at the end list.
You know, I see it on the list.
There's 14 of them there and youhave some really fast guys you
have like, you know, JustinDavis, you have a couple other
really fast guys Cody ParkhouseBrock Dickerson I mean, these
are these are some of the topclass one guys that are racing
(51:41):
nowadays. So if these guys onceagain, if any of these guys have
a perfect game, there's notgonna be 6100 truck in sight.
That's kind of my opinion aswell. Hey, I do want to throw
out you know, he was Episode 44here on the talent tank. He's a
just a really badass racer andultra for he missed the podium
four times this year and ultrafor by less than 30 seconds, but
(52:02):
Paul horschel will be racing hishis car that he won.
He won his class in Baja. 1000with back in November. So we've
got a 4400 guy that may give allthese other guys pretty good
runs for their money. Yeah, Imean, that'll be cool. And is
that I assume? Is that anindependent rear end car or is
that a solid?
(52:23):
Solid axle? Yeah, so solid axlecar. I'm sorry mile. Fish can't
hear what miles says this is sothis is driving me crazy. miles
is interjecting. I'm like oh,yeah, you should do that. I
apologize. So your thing willmiles and I will get this worked
out before all the other peoplethat were that will be called on
this. No big deal. No big deal.
Honestly, what would you justsaid you know that that being a
(52:44):
solid extra part. That's what Iwas just talking about a minute
ago, how the classroom cars arefragile that that is an
advantage for that solid axlecar right there. Just getting
having that solid axle on thecar makes it a lot more
reliable, most of the time withhigh horsepower than some of
these buggies. So once again, ifthese top guys have a problem,
that guy is probably going to beright there with them and then
he's just gonna pull ahead. Soit is a good race by having
(53:05):
those two next I like that theyare allowing the solid axles to
come in class one. I'm trulyexcited about that. That whole
event itself. Okay, this isn'tthe first race this is the the I
believe the second race on thefirst day on Saturday of the
Toyo tires desert challenge.
This is the MP class elevens sothis is MPs sponsoring the class
(53:26):
11 race if I understood rightthere's around 15 entries at
this point they're racing theshort course that King of the
hammers the whole thing is beingpresented by baja jerky so
that's cool to have you know anoutside the industry sponsored
given money and also about classhe's actually really good too by
the way just real quick I didhave a bunch of that stuff
before it tastes really good Ihighly suggest it well handicap
(53:49):
for us the what class elevensare tell us what they are you
know most wired listeners Aren'tyou know they're 4400 guys or
they're getting the hammers guysyeah, they're not the desert
guys and that's why you You'reour subject matter expert on
this. They're like a slot littlebug and they have like a cult
following. Yeah, class theliving is pretty much the the
(54:09):
ultimate, the coolest, the mostbadass the most manly frickin
class that there is in desertracing. That's all I can say
about class 11 if you ever raceda class 11 You are the man like
these things just beat the shitout of you all day like they
just are you go as fast as youcan in a little Herbie bug
basically and they really theylast they get through the silt
(54:31):
they don't get stuck that muchthey drive right around people
that are stuck that go right uprock clients you know hills they
it's these things are awesome.
So this is going to be a reallycool race. I'm really glad Dave
is doing this race. It's gonnabe cool to see a bunch of these
I think I'm not sure on this.
Maybe miles knows are they arethey doing a land rush start to
I don't know about the landrusstarted all but I do know
there's 20 k on the line. And wegot a couple of our own guys. We
(54:53):
got Brian cross race one andJosh atterbury and Wyatt related
to fish about the Josh atterburyWe saw him when he first got the
car. He went bombing through thewoods and just skyed out, almost
messed up, but rolled with itand it went pretty viral. It was
awesome to watch. Yeah, soBrian Krause ultra for guy
racing class 11 but Josh out ofBarry, you're absolutely right
(55:15):
miles Josh and Barry 4400. Guy,but so fish. I don't know if you
saw this video go viral. I mean, the white one is it's a white
bug. White class 11 he's justlike, you know, just hitting
some pretty good whoops and justgets the rhythm section wrong.
And launches this thing and ittakes a gnarly basketball in
bounce into a dead cat bounce.
(55:38):
Oh, wow. Hilarious. We'll haveto. We'll have to go look that
up. It was actually pretty easyto find. But yeah, so yeah,
there's been some 4400 guys, orat least some ultra for guys
that have been like, embraced itand ran out and grabbed grab
class. 11 cars, I think is whatI heard correctly was Bailey.
Campbell. Bailey was superexcited when Brian crops you
(56:00):
know, her her fiance you know, strolled in with his class 11
she was just ecstatic that youknow, they were racing another
class out of the Campbellstable. Yeah, it's gonna be
really cool to see this class. Iknow it's the first time I've
ever done it there. And youknow, I honestly I think this is
gonna have one of the biggestattendance is watching is this
is this class just because it'sgoing to be pretty cool. You
(56:22):
don't you don't see that everyday. It'll be all short course
you know, it's gonna be an hourand a half race should be
roughly 25 laps and very easy towatch and a lot of fun. And
these guys, you know, there'snot a huge horsepower
difference. So it's gonna be adrivers race and the class 11
showdown that's gonna be it'sgonna be a good time to watch.
Well, I'm with you. miles. Ithink that I think you're I
(56:43):
think this is gonna be just agreat race to watch. Fish. I
think you're spot on with all ofyour reads on this, that it's
gonna be a fun one. Do you thinkthis is kind of some writing on
the wall for you know, get latejavin. here as we jump off the
jump off, as we've seen 13 cars,10 cars, 12 trucks or whatever
that was in 2019? I'm sorry, in2020. And then here we are with
(57:05):
over 80 Desert vehiclesregistered for the toy tires
desert challenge weekend, do youthink this grows next year, and
it's more and it's more and it'smore and taking car counts from
from other series, or it justreshuffles the calendar? You
know, that's a tough one, really, I do think that there is
(57:25):
going to be some more lateentries, like you said, because
that other race in Nevada gotmoved way back. And that race,
the people that were going to dothat race, a lot of them were
not going to do this race, justbecause they didn't have time,
you know, they had to pick, sothey were going to pick either
this race or that race. And ifthey picked that race, they
probably weren't gonna do thisrace, there's not enough time to
get your car ready for a lot ofpeople. So that being said, that
(57:46):
other race being moved toDecember, you know, it gives
people the opportunity if theywant to, to come out and do this
race now. So I really do hopethat they get some more entries
and Sunday passes. Because likeI said earlier, I kind of taken
back at the amount in some ofthese only, I would have thought
that some of these would havebeen bigger, with the amount of
money that's on the line, theonly thing I can think is kind
of like what I said for the Tone class, where these guys know
(58:08):
that the top people are gonnawin and they can't beat those
top people. So they're scared.
You know, it's like I said, it'sa winner take all for almost all
these verses what I think isfirst and second, get paid, I
don't even know, third, getpaid. So if you know that, like
you don't really have a shot toget first or second, I think
that keeps some people away.
However, with the TV coverage, you know, the TV I call TV,
though, the live show that Daveputs on on the internet is it's
(58:30):
worth coming out to this raceand doing because you don't get
that at a lot of these otherraces. So people back home can
watch you, you know, you getsome coverage, actually, you
know, some decent coverage. So,I don't know, hopefully a lot
more show up in the last minute.
I'm glad you you propped thelive show. We've talked about
it, you know before you'regetting you on the phone, and I
know we're gonna talk about awhole bunch more, but the live
show is gonna be what you COVIDit's just been so funky. And I
(58:52):
think they're expecting numbersout of the hammers to be greater
than they've been in years pastjust people are ready to get out
of the house, they're ready togo recreate they're ready to go,
we'll be ready to go see racing, and we think is going to be a
blot year. I mean, they'reexpecting it planning for it.
But if you aren't comfortablemaking your way out there,
you're not comfortable beingaround a ton of people or
(59:12):
whatever, for whatever reason, health conditions or whatever
that is the live show is legit.
And if you want to go out to thethe grab that pay per view for
the live show, that's anadditional that's augmented
coverage. So it's not justyou're gonna have your live
show. And if you can put up asecond monitor, you can watch
(59:33):
the pay per view and that's youcan select what you want to
watch. If you just want to watchthe camera from backdoor you can
put the camera on backdoor andcatch just that portion. And
that's only 10 bucks for theweek. Yeah, I think I think Dave
is doing a great job with thisstuff. And you know, I know
Myles is part of that show andDave actually asked me to be
part of that show this year soI'm stoked to go out there and
be part of that and you know, having the this user select
(59:56):
ability on what they want towatch is epic that no one has
done that before desert racingthat's never been done there's
been other live feeds you knowthat have been that have showed
the race live and covered someof it, but there's never been a
and I'm going to call it NASCARstyle because you can do this in
NASCAR you can get your NASCARpass and for the year and you
can go on you can pick whatdriver you want to listen to the
radio you can pick what driveryou want to watch their car you
(01:00:16):
know and now for Dave to bedoing that type stuff or close
to it. It's pretty cool you knowand definitely big props to Dave
for stepping up and doing that Ithink people are gonna are gonna
love it you know the problem isit might be not as many people
at home because everyone wantsto be there but well maybe we
will see but I did love that youwere you dropped the nugget in
there that I didn't want to bethe one to to release you know
(01:00:37):
the crack and so to speak butthat you are you're going to be
one of the live showcommentators
no not really my thing but youknow I usually like to have good
info for everybody so I've beenout there the last couple of
years and just I you know I wasbehind the scenes a bit posted
information and pass it somethings along to the people on
(01:00:58):
the show. But you know this yearI think I'll be I'll be fine
sitting outdoors You know, thisis a big outdoor event. So I
think it's a good spot for me togo and I you know hopefully I
can have some information to addto everybody to help the show
out. Well I can't wait to seeAustin Thank you for calling in
everybody if you guys see fishout on the lake bed or just want
to track down who exactly fishesis a logistics that's like
(01:01:22):
logistics but spelled with afish in the front of it. And man
Thank you for letting us callyou pick your brain get your
read on exactly what's going onwith this prototype desert
challenge presented by MonsterEnergy on this opening weekend
of hammers right on Yeah, I'mreally I'm really stoked it will
we'll see you guys out therenext weekend. All right, we'll
catch you later Yeah, thanksokay
(01:01:42):
well miles he's great man I lovefish you know having fish on you
know we had him Go Fish on fishNo, you know I've met fishing a
couple different times in lifethrough different racing genres
and then last year got to hangout with him a little bit for
counting stuff and and you knowin the McMillan boys you know
the the brothers ban and loopwith him I mean just just great
(01:02:04):
people in the desert it's verycool to see the car counts go
from what they were you knowwith one event yet last year to
where we're at this year and youknow, across COVID hammer King
is really open the gamut up toother classes and other tracks
and other courses and otheropportunities in huge huge
(01:02:25):
persons. And I'm just like fishOh for sure. And like you know
how cool is it because like Ifeel like why you and I know
ultra for for very well that boyfish he knows the desert like no
other like that dude is the theexpert of the desert whoops like
he knows he knows who's the whowas the what and it's cool to
have him last year he helped usa lot on the behind the scenes
(01:02:49):
with the live show and to havehim really link up with this is
gonna be fun. He's the go tosubject matter expert for all
things desert racing. And I knowpeople look at ultra forests
somewhat desert racing, andit's, you know, when we mix it
in, but it's apples and oranges, but it's two different things.
Well, this time around, youknow, and what happens on that
opening weekend is they come toour turf. This is our turf. This
(01:03:10):
is this is the hammers. This isJohnson Valley. This is where
guys like Randy slawson cut histeeth, you know, as a little
kid, right? And Bailey Cole grewup going out there and climbing
around growing up.
Bailey Cold Stone up. He's a bighe's a big man. I love Bailey.
And you know, we'll talk abouthim probably later in the show,
(01:03:31):
too. But yes, he changed hisnumber. He's number 17. JT
Taylor seems to come to mind.
Maybe Right. Yeah. Used to bethe 13. Anyway. Well, no rest
for the wicked. Let's move on.
Let's move on to through to theschedule. So. So moving into
Monday, we've got the ken M.
UTV, King of the hammers, qualifying. We've got the Holley
(01:03:54):
EFI shootout. That's all therock bouncers, that's awesome.
And then we got the laser netrock coordination. That word is
something else. I always mess itup coronation, and feel like
what on earth is that deal? Andwe're going to talk about it. So
the EFI Holly, if I shoot outrock bouncers, yeah, so I
believe I'll be doing the doingthat with Matthew Holt. He does
he races for with the southernrock racing series. He helps an
(01:04:18):
ounce with him a little bit andhe helped us last year, but I
believe it'll be me and Mattteamed up for the Holley EFI
shot shootout presented by Kingshocks and action sports canopy.
Well, my only my thing you know,I love watching those guys
absolutely beat the crap out oftheir bouncers like absolute I
mean, when Nolan Grogan calledthose guys rock bouncers, and
(01:04:39):
that that just stuck in italways has stuck, you know,
they're not rock crawling, they're bouncing. And in their
absolute on a show, they put ona show, but when they break,
they break big and then therecovery time is forever, and it
gets boring, and then I loseinterest. And then I'm like,
Okay, I'm out of beer andI'm out of here. And that's
(01:05:00):
where Dave and Cody Wagner Mr.
Lazar has himself kind of cameup with the rock coronation and
that's where Cody is gonnahandpick a half a dozen or so of
his close buddies and they'regonna have the moon buggies with
the rear steer and all that andthey'll have a hill or a new
Hill that's never been climbedright next to where the shootout
(01:05:22):
is going to be that I can'tdisclose quite yet. But if we
have a recovery we're going tosend one of those rock back rock
buggies up you know with Codyand maybe Craig Allen and a few
more and they're going to do thelow slow crawling and try to
make it the top so the shootoutis gonna be a lot of fun because
there's the action all nightlong. So that if I understood it
right as is described to mewhile the bouncers are going
(01:05:44):
then they're going to pan thecamera over and get the guys
next to this crazy issues youknow climb where you know when
there's idle time they will beable to pan the camera over and
check out these guys in the rockcrawler so like any of the
Jessie Haynes crawlers with theyou know the all the
articulations pretty penny andall those pretty penny Yes,
(01:06:07):
they're all got those those carsare amazing portal axles single
seaters are light and just theylook like Billy goes right man,
they just stuff so in theory, you know, the plan is and I like
the plan. That's that's the partthat I like I rock crawling does
intrigued me, though, I justdon't have the patience for it,
(01:06:27):
but I will watch it. Especiallyif it's like a halftime show.
For four guys just banging offthe rev limiter trying to spit
every axle shaft out of theircar. I will absolutely cheer
that on. I love watching a trainwreck. Yeah, I just listened to
racing on the rocks. Cody Wagnerwas just on his podcast just a
(01:06:47):
week or two ago. So if you wantto know a little bit more, Cody
and Jesse dive in deep, so I'llgive a racing on the rocks that
listen. Yeah, I think that's agreat segue. And I know we
talked about that pre show, butthe talent tank only puts up so
many shows a year. Right. It'sit's why and, and my time and
busy. I actually have a job afamily, it's you know, those
(01:07:07):
things that most peopleapparently have. I mean, who
knew? And, you know, behind thescenes just enough to realize
that you putting out a you know,a two hour episode that eats up
810 hours. I mean, so thank youfor doing it, but it's a lot of
time and we appreciate yourefforts. So with that Jesse,
Jesse is amazing. And his showracing on the rocks. You know,
(01:07:28):
he started out you know, covering a lot of you know,
Southern rock racing stuff. Alot of the stuff utvs he's
covered definitely covered someultra for guys. You've been on.
You've been on his show miles.
But man, I've got thrown anotherset of guys out there, though.
Whiskey wine and wheelingpodcast, those guys between
racing on the rocks and whiskeywine and wheeling. I don't know
what it is with the drinks likedrinks and wheeling. Show names.
(01:07:50):
But and then of course, but butI mean, come back, come back
home to mama to the mothershipwith the talent tank. You guys
got to come back when I youknow. Yeah, all three of those
podcasts that keeps me busywork. I love it. So and then the
guys over whiskey wine andwheeling. Talk to those guys
quite a bit. You know, Jason,Jason, such a good dude. He's
(01:08:11):
asked me to come on his show acouple times, and I just haven't
had the time and the wherewithalto do it. And you know, everyone
that tells me, you know, yes,I'll be on your show, you know
that there's no ability to sayno, and then I'm, I'm being the
pot, you know, call me saying,No, no, I'm gonna do it. And
we'll err, you know, it'll be onthe talent tank, but I know,
you're like, well, we want toknow your history. Why and like,
(01:08:33):
that's kind of lame, but allright, that really late. Yeah.
See? There you go. The the jury.
At least? I'm a tall. Oh, youweren't talking about my height?
Ah, ha ha. Yeah, what wasfriends like you? Oh, man. So so
moving from those guys. Ihaven't seen the car counts for
(01:08:54):
the bouncers yet. Haven't seenthe car counts for the
coordination deal. But I thinkthat's a great idea. I think
that I think that works. I mean, here's what everyone knows what
I love about Dr. Ford that andwhat I love about Dave not
scared to try something and ifit doesn't work, we move on and
last year or fix it or orimprove it just like the
shootout. Let's Yeah, that'sgreat. But with all that
(01:09:16):
downtime, it's like day to dayto do what do I talk about for
the next 20 minutes? bla bla blabla, boom, rock, coronation.
Rock coronation? It is. Well, you know, so that that kind of
wraps up Monday, right. Mondaynight. We'll do that. And then
of course, after rockcoronation, where do we end up?
I typically end up at the tribefirepit. Is that going on this
year? Yeah, at least. Yep. Iknow. Tried to sponsor the fire
(01:09:37):
pit. But is it still? I don'tknow when COVID I don't know. I
will tell. Time will tell them.
We'll get some information. Iknow. They don't want you know,
crowds greater than 10 peoplehanging around. So I don't know.
Are we gonna have little groupsof 10 pockets around there? I
don't know. But I'd love to havesome fireball with my good buddy
Danny Edwards from the rockzombies. He's mobile way over
there. We got to do that. Allright, Danny. There's your
(01:09:58):
There's your shout out. You bet.
Make it walk over from from GBRa scene. And let's go.
fireball bring it. All right, man Tuesday. This is modos day
man and, and you know, we endthe day. We've got motos all day
and then we've got the pit crewchallenge that night. Well, it's
modos. And every man challengequalifies. So we're gonna have
two live shows going on sametime, so it's gonna be busy. So
(01:10:20):
we'll have the modos race goingon. And the four wheel parts
every man channel is qualifyingsimultaneously. It's on the live
show, you're gonna have like onthe left screen, you're gonna
have motos and on the rightyou're gonna have MC qualifying
right, or it's gonna be it'sgonna be busy. It's gonna be
fun. Yeah, I think it's gonna befun. I mean, I'm pretty, pretty
excited about it. But the allballs racing, King of the modos
(01:10:43):
Tell me about that. I'm miles.
You're not you. As we saidearlier, I'm not a moto guy.
You're not really a moto guy.
You're pitbike guy. I yeah, so Idon't know a whole lot. Those
guys are insane. watching thoseguys. bland rush star. It's It's
amazing. You know, CameronSteel's racing, every single,
you know, racist. You'reincluding the all balls king of
the modos. And I got a funnybackstory. So my director, Tim,
(01:11:05):
he's from Canada. He He's akayaker. He drives a minivan
doesn't know off road itanything. So last year, you
know, we're kind of you know,I'm helping him build the the
host schedule and whatnot. Andhe's like, hey, do you want to
do the motos announcing them? Iwill if I need to, but I'm not
really a moto guy. Whatever.
He's like, oil like this. Youknow, who knows him as well.
Ricky Johnson would probably bea good fit. Oh, does he know
(01:11:26):
motos? I'm like, well, so I senthim the Wikipedia. Yeah, it's
just fine. No, that's goodstuff. I think those guys are
insane. And really, I only knowI only know how to use Nick. Rob
eustache used to race it, buthe's washed up. He's literally
washed up I mean, he's on a boatall day now every day he's in
the water. But I believe CodyWebb's coming back and that name
(01:11:46):
I'm not a moto guy. I know thatname. Yeah, he'll he'll be back
to defend once again. Andthere's there's a bunch of them
those guys you know what theyyou know what the ultra four
guys go up and then you send adirt bike up there. It's just
it. Those guys are impressive.
You know what I found impressivethe other day and this wasn't in
a moto but it wasn't two wheelswas Connor Clifford. You know
(01:12:09):
that name Connor Clifford isLance's boy doing some downhill
mountain biking, and he'ssending God I guess my legal
name for it. My only word for itis my reaction was like, how do
you go that fast and reiteratethat fast? He's 12 or 13? Yeah,
young man. He's been a big BMXracer and it's been fun to watch
(01:12:32):
him and now he's doing that thatmountain bike stuff is pretty
wild. Well if he if he if Lancestays on him Lancer in a you
know, his parents, you know, amazing individuals. Lance, the

they stay on him the way he isand he moves over to moto and he

be formidable. With his abilityto retrain the video I watched

So sorry, I'm asking you thephotos. It's gonna be awesome.
(01:13:15):
Love that ever. Man challengewith Power Hour right around
four o'clock, I believe. So it'sgoing to be a full busy day of
qualifying and racing. And thenthat night I believe, myself and
Pam Hall will be hosting the pitcrew challenge presented by pro
eagle and buggy whip. And Ithink we may have a couple guest
hosts as well. Last year we hadBlake Wilkie helped me out. We
(01:13:37):
may get Dustin battleaxe Jonesto help us out. But we'll have
more than 10 I believe. Guysthat sign up to do the pit crew
challenge you get a lot of coolswag, a lot of cool prizes. It's
a lot of fun. So it's you know,it's we're at around a minute
you have to change a tire youhave to put some fake fuel in
and it's uh, you know, it's justa fun thing to do to get your
crew out there involved and justanother added thing to to make
(01:14:01):
hammers week what it is. Or youfind out how slow you really
are.
Yeah, that's that's it rightthere. So that that's wrapping

(01:16:34):
Oh man, Wednesday, Wednesday,Wednesday we've got that's the
first day of LC q that'squalifying for the 4400 class,
buddy. We're not ready to talkabout them yet. But I I'm smell
race gas.
I'm so excited. We're gettingthere. All right, well,
(01:16:54):
Thursday, Thursday, we're gonnacircle back to this you can am
UTV, King of the hammers. Thisis the fastest growing class in
the desert. This is the fastestgrowing class at ultra for lots
and lots of cars. I mean theYeah, the cannamd Motorsports
UTV king of the hammerspresented by Progressive
(01:17:15):
Insurance. Thursday it's gonnabe on hunter Miller see if he
can back up is when we got a lotof cannamd guys that are that
are going to be fast. You know,I just said Dustin Jones will be
there. Both Miller brothers willbe there. It's gonna be Damon
Campbell's build a new car.
Yeah, that's gonna be a fun oneto see. There's like Casey curry
will be in there. I saw.
(01:17:35):
I saw Jason shear and theentries. Really? And then don't
forget that the new Honda team.
Jordan Pellegrino and BaileyCole just got added to Team
Honda for their UTV. I mean, howcool is that for those two young
individuals? I mean, those guyshave earned their way up the
ranks. They're racing 4400 andnow Honda huge name. Bring them
on team. Good for those guys.
(01:17:59):
That's what ultra four is allabout. I love Bailey. I don't
know Jordan, but I do want tosee what I have seen. Oh,
Jordan, I'm really impressed.
But I'd love it if you wouldraise something more than just
kena hammers. I'd love to seehim in the series or some series
based on that, hey, somewhere inthere I've got notes in here
miles and in back me up here.
But one of the nights and itmight have been I might have
(01:18:21):
skipped it that they're gonna bedoing some short course. Short
Course work. Well, so that's inmy notes. Dave and Ricky were
kind of bantering about it atthe cage pre show was there may
be some West Coast short courseguys playing around on our short
course it's just a littlehearsay. There's a little nugget
(01:18:41):
drop don't know all the ins andouts is very possible to see a
pro tuner pro for out thereplaying on our infield. So
that's so you heard exactly whatI heard. Okay. Well, I didn't
know if I was crazy. I thoughtthat was a little bit insane.
But you know, sometimes I do geta lot more of the insight of
things. And I haven't heard anymore than I heard on the pre
show. So let's put my puzzlestogether. We'll see what
(01:19:03):
happens. But with Lucas kind ofdropping out there's some hints
of somebody else stepping in. Ihope you know short course
racing in the West Coast keepsgoing and we may have a
teenager's you get a paycheckfrom ultra for I down I heard
ultra for was taking over theshort course business. That's
what I heard. And I don't knowif I thought that was amazing.
(01:19:24):
Crazy. elated. Scared, you'relike, wow, I think that's pretty
cool. I think the ultra foursposition as a racing
organization to pull somethingoff like that, but I'm
cautiously optimistic. I want tohear more. I've only heard
rumors and conjecture. I haven'theard anyone confirm it. So I
also want to Well, I haven'theard anyone say it's not
(01:19:46):
happening to me either. So yeah,we'll see. We'll see how it all
plays out. It's gonna be it'sgonna be it's gonna be a good
week. And yeah, we'll geteverything kicked off. Yeah,
this this will be the first raceof the Optima battery. King of
the hammers.
Presented by laser now how coolis it for laser net to kind of
step up and help ultra forthrough these crazy COVID time
(01:20:07):
so huge shout out to Cody Wagnerhe's been making all of our
trophies for quite some time andwith the little void we had per
COVID Optima battery stepped upto be the the title sponsor and
then old Cody with laser netstepped up be the presenting
sponsor for the king in hammersweek. So huge shout out to
(01:20:27):
Optima and laser net. Yeah, I'mexcited about that. So we're
talking UTV in and I didn't wantto get ahead of ourselves and we
actually we talked about hunterMiller there for a second you
know, he one lashing Who's thatguy? Oh, yeah, yeah, who
exactly who is unaware becausethis dude you know, he he'd
never raced Can he never been tothe hammers before? And he shows
(01:20:47):
up and he wins. And then hisbrother had a problem in his car
during the UTV race. It was sostill basically fully prep car.
I think he broke it. mile levelis a front end. So it was
something simple as like a boltback. It was something simple.
So he ends up signing up in the4400 race on Friday q in
finishes and 17th in a UTV sothese two Miller brothers out of
(01:21:08):
North Texas something else, butuh, on that note, and you've had
hunter on the on a podcast, Ibelieve, right. Let's call him
so we have to listen to anotherTexas guy. All of them.
He's not answering either.
Hello, there he is. hotter. Wegot ya. What? Okay, okay, so I
was laughing because oh, well,he's not gonna take my call
(01:21:32):
either. So, Connor, you gotwhite here. You got miles. I've
got you on. We're doing a littlepre show action. We're talking a
king of the hammers coming up.
Want to talk to you about yourcall? Huh? Yeah. Yeah, I was
kind of forced into. He was hewas absolutely forced in it.
Hunter. Wolf one. Thanks. Thanksfor coming on. Let's pick your
(01:21:54):
brain for a minute. But you arethe current defending UTV champ,
a king the hammers. How's thatweigh on you? Uh, try not think
about it too much.
You know, we came in last year, kind of underprepared. And this
year, I feel like we're overprepared. But, you know,
sometimes thatdoesn't always work out like you
hope it to. So. I don't know.
(01:22:16):
I'm trying not to think aboutthe pressure too much. Last
year, we didn't have anyexpectations on us. And this
year, obviously, everybody'swatching us. So we'll see. Well,
and you've done some pre runningthis year. Right? You've already
been out there a little bit.
Yeah, yeah, we took it one tripout there. We're changing our
setup quite a bit for this year.
So we wanted to go out there andmake sure it was actually going
(01:22:37):
to work. So we took took a longweekend, we went out and watched
the last works race and went outand drove for three or four days
out there and everything workedawesome. It was you know, me and
Cody, Kyle Cheney, Phil blurton,a couple of the other KTM guys
Dustin Jones with us had areally good trip and and learn
quite a bit. So pretty, prettyconfident in what we figured
(01:22:57):
out. So you kind of named offkind of all all the front
runners, all that front pack.
That's awesome. I look forwardto hearing all those names
again, on race day. You and yourbrother, you guys built new cars
this year? Yeah, we did. We youknow, we took the platforms that
we had last year, and reallyjust expanded on those, you
know, we didn't know shit aboutrock crawling, and we are
(01:23:17):
buddies over at s3, you know, alot of them knew what was going
on. And, and we took theiradvice. And they built us some
chassis that worked really well.
But, you know, last year, wereally focused on pre running in
the rocks, and pretty much nonein the desert. And, you know, we
set our cars up to go throughthe rocks as good as we could.
(01:23:39):
But, you know, when we started,we got there and had committed
to that narrower car setup andstarted pruning in the desert.
We're like, Man, these thingsare a bit of a handful. So, you
know, we took the same basicchassis and went to the 72 inch
wide suspension when up to a 35inch tire. We've got some pretty
trick new a arms thatchange change things a little
(01:24:00):
bit, you know, so I think we'rein a little bit better spot than
we were. Well, I know when youtext me a picture of the 35 I
was, you know, my jaw drop. Now,now that you've had the the new
cars out on 35 What's that feel?
Like? What's the difference thatyou notice right off the bat?
Oh, dude, they're so nasty.
Like, you know, last year you'rekind of just bashing through
(01:24:23):
stuff and trying to keep yourarms and everything from just
smoking rocks. But with thoseyou just have so much more
ground clearance and we gothrough the rock so much faster
that just you know eateverything up obviously I mean
the 32 was it measured out askind of even a small 32 maybe
closer to a 31 and those aretrue 35 and it's it's a huge
difference and then go into thewider stance. The car still
(01:24:46):
handles awesome. You know, it'sit's a big, big, big difference.
How does the 30 fives react inthe desert? I honestly I feel
like better you know the holesout there so big from the big
trucks and stuff andYou know, we're getting up to 35
our tires, not a whole lotsmaller anymore. So it eats up
the big holes. I mean, ofcourse, it's a little tougher on
(01:25:07):
the belts and all that. But, youknow, you manage that stuff and
car still got awesome top speed.
So what is the top? Well, areyou pushing 100?
Oh, yeah, yeah, we can run 100for sure. For sure. I think Cody
said last year across the lakethat he saw 105. And that was on
32. So, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Butthen, you know, the trucks are
(01:25:30):
still going on. SoWell, yeah. I mean, that's a,
you know, a trophy truck run on140. Versus Yeah, guys. Luckily,
you guys won't be on the samecourse. But you'd rather have
any, you know, I guessstrategies already worked out
talked about, as far as like, you know, are you going to work
to qualify up front again, likeyou guys did last year? You guys
left?
(01:25:52):
To right. Yeah, that that'lldefinitely be the goal. You
know, Cody obviously had thatbummer. Mechanical right off the
bat last year. But you know, when we were getting ready last
year, like man, How awesomewould it be if we're just
qualify up there and are runningtogether the whole race, you
know, which I think we reallywould have had he not had that.
It was just a shock bolt break, you know, which is very random.
(01:26:15):
I think we really would have sobut you know, we're definitely
not the only ones. There's a lotof guys that can run up front.
So I'd love it to have you know, five or six of us out there the
whole time. Cody opened eyes, you know, when you can take a
40, you know, a UTV and run withthe 4400s and finish that race
in 17th position.
(01:26:35):
Yeah, oh, yeah, for sure.
We're scared to death, to behonest with you, you know, I
left right after the right stuffat home. And,
you know, it was kind of a joke, like, you just stay in 140 400.
You know, well, then he startedtalking to him. And everybody's
like, yeah, yeah, car passes, tech and everything.
And we were, you know, we werescared. We thought they were
(01:26:56):
gonna use him for traction thewhole time. But he actually got
through everything. pretty dang.
Well, you know, of course, is wewere at a or he was at a pretty
big disadvantage in the desert.
But we got into the rocks. Imean, the utvs can pretty well
hold their own against the bigtrucks now, just because so
light, you know, we'll see.
We'll see. I mean, it wasdefinitely opened eyes. And
hopefully, we can open a littlewider this year. I don't have a
(01:27:19):
current class list. But man, your your numbers were way up
there. I mean, we're talkingabout over 600 entries for the
whole week. I think, you know, over 100 of them are just UTV.
Yeah, yeah. It's crazy. Thebiggest class, and it's not even
that it's, you know, all racingis expensive. But UTV is not
that cheap. It's, it is a it'san expensive, you know, to run
(01:27:43):
in the front, like you guys do.
new cars, full tube chassis, 35inch tires. That takes a lot to
make one of those cars handlethat. Yeah, it really does. You
know, I mean, we start withstock cars, of course, and we
take them down to the barechassis and we cut, cut a lot of
parts off and reinforced a lotof the things and we do both
sides on them. And you know, that's kind of a discussion that
(01:28:04):
has been going around about utvslately is, you know, they're
evolving to the point and, or toa point, they're just going
further and further every year.
And it's like, well, when do youget to the point where it's just
becoming too expensive, youknow, and it's not as appealing
to the everyday guy like it isright now. It's kind of a fine
line where you know, you want tobuild these badass cars. But at
(01:28:25):
the same time, you don't want toget to the point where you have
to build a completely custom carjust to compete, you know. So
I'm sure those rules are goingto evolve over the years, and
we'll see what happens. But, youknow, our pre runners are very
production based. I mean, they're a stock chassis that we
add some gussets in and thenjust bolt on suspension and a
bolt on cage. And honestly, Ifeel like they're just as
(01:28:46):
capable as their race cars, theyjust won't last quite as long.
You know, they won't take quitethe beating that the race cars
will but they still get throughthis stuff. Pretty good. Yeah, I
mean, those key names. I mean, they're, I mean, right now
they're the the thing to bePolaris. Polaris is still
amazing product. But you had,you know, a ton of success, not
(01:29:07):
just the key of hammers and anultra for racing, but your other
racing that you do outside therest of the year. Yeah, then you
just win takes place. Yeah, yeah. Did and you know, all the
front runners out there and arein camps as well as a cool race.
12 hours straight. That wasawesome. Yep. 12 straight. Yeah,
that place is awesome. It'sridiculous. There's nothing else
like it, that's for sure. Youknow, I came up and visited you
(01:29:30):
that one time text Plex, and itwas a mud mud pit. So yeah, I
think it's me every time I'vebeen it's been a mud pit. So
that's why I didn't come visityou any more often.
Are you coming to hammers? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely.
Can't miss the hammers. Now hardto take a lot of take a lot of
rain. Turn that one into a mudpit. Although it looks like it
is supposed to rain all nextweek when we're out there pre
(01:29:51):
running. So yes, that's exactlyright. Yeah. So So yeah, you're
welcome. I'm not gonna get inuntil a couple days later. So
I'm not gonna take full creditfor that. Maybe just
marks for credit. Take thetropical weather from down here
on the Gulf Coast. Man 100 Thankyou for taking a little bit of
time from from your schedule tojust let us drop in on you asked
you about you know, yourstrategy about your new car
(01:30:13):
about the prep you and yourbrother Cody have have had
getting ready to come back outthere for a second time for a
second big race and hopefullybackup your win last year and
nobody will think you know, youjust don't mess with Texas,
right? Yeah, that's exactlyright. Yeah, that's that's the
biggest motivator here is justprove it wasn't a fluke. You
(01:30:33):
know. So, ya know, I definitelyappreciate it and we're looking
forward to you. I will I'llcatch up with you guys on the
lake bed. Okay, thanks. Thanksfor letting us call you Okay,
Hunter. Yeah.
I will catch you soon. Yeah.
He's such a great guy. Oh, yeah.
I love talking to Hunter.
Yeah, I am so I don't know Codythat well, but uh, you know,
(01:30:54):
hunters, hunters, just a, he's acharacter developed a fun
relationship with him. Just thetext messages I get from he
cracks me up. You know, he'sliterally one of us. But he came
into our fold of buddies in thelast last year in the last year,
but from a different angle.
Right. You know, it's like thebirds of a feather flock
together and he found he foundhis flock right. But he came
through the UTV channels ofshort course and and all that so
(01:31:17):
love that guy. I you know, I'llbe cheering cheering him on.
There's there's so many greatguys are racing, UTV. There's so
many big names to JeremyMcGrath. McGrath like yeah, how
cool is that? And thenobviously, we have our core
group, you know, we've gotthere's, I think, over 100 utvs
of aeration with us this year.
(01:31:38):
This this. The camp m UTV, the10 m Motorsports UTV race
presented by ProgressiveInsurance, that race is gonna be
fun. It's a huge class. It's afun class, those things are so
incredibly capable. It's gonnabe a great day racing on
Thursday. Well, I got to pullthis up, because there was some
there was some names in herethat are racing, the UTV that I
(01:31:59):
just absolutely floored by,right. You know, Bailey Cole, we
know he's in the Han Honda car,and if I don't name someone's
name, don't be mad at me. Butsome of these names, you know,
Brock Eggers over there. Camsteel Casey Currie. Ampudia. Oh,
yeah, Rodrigo Ampunia. ChipMacLaughlin, Just Healy
Campbell. Right. Uh, CJ Greaves.
I mean, that guy's nuts. DanWyrick. I mean, you can't forget
(01:32:23):
Dustin Battleaxe Jones. I mean, there are some names. Obviously.
We just you just heard us talkto hunter Miller, you know,
shares in there. Jason Weller,Jeremy McGrath, Johnny Greaves,
Jordan Pellegrino. Oh, and thenall our core guys, JP Gomez all
the Gomez's are they I didn'teven Yeah, well, I part of the
(01:32:44):
time. I think you get some ofthe 4400 guys running over there
because they for pre record prerunning. So you got a huge
advantage. Why wouldn't you?
Yeah, leave I Lauren Marcos.
Yeah, for sure. Guthrie's inthere? both together three. No,
let me back that up. I thinkthere's like three Guthrie's
running. I think there's likethree. I don't know who all they
are. But they're scurrilouslyjunior and senior. They're the
(01:33:07):
two winningest UTV kena hammersout there, Phil Blurton. Oh,
yeah, he's that guy's gonna wineventually. Phil Cagleiro. Oh,
I'm glad to see he's comingback. Yep, I saw him on a list.
What about this one? Sara Price.
Yep, yep, she's arrived. Youknow, I'm awesome. See her out
(01:33:27):
there yet. Shannon Campbell inthere. Wayland Campbell in
there? You know another Texasguys Andy Williams with the
Rufus racing crew. You know, there's so many men and Clark's
been doing good last season. Oneof my favorite underdogs is
Scotland sage, that dude, heraced every single race and
almost finished every singlemile. He just timed out on a
(01:33:48):
race and that guy shows up byhimself Southern California all
the way to Tennessee. I justlove that the core ultra for
guys that race with us all thetime that Nathan Wolfie, he had
a great showing at thenationals. Well, I want to jump
real quick. I wouldn't jump backto the stage real quick because
I think he finished nationals. Ithink he ended up in third.
There was some drama around thecourse at Nationals at Oklahoma.
(01:34:11):
And I ended up meeting him youknow, through Dave Cole and
through the timing trailer inwalking through his issue. Great
What a great dude like an on topof his game like he knew they
knew the math, they knew thetiming and they knew where that
there was a deficiency that hiscar couldn't have read because
he couldn't have finished wherehe finished if the timing was
(01:34:32):
accurate. And he came to ultrafor he laid out his case went to
the to the time and trailer Iwent with him to the timing
trailer and walked the thingfrom you know, from cradle to
grave what the issue was. Andguess what it changed the
outcome and the National pointsrun for him. He ended up third
and national points I believe isI think where you end up
finishing great guy like him.
I'll definitely be cheering forhim. But yeah, there's so many
(01:34:54):
he runs an in a machine too.
He's one of the few guys thatruns no turbo like that guy.
He just he's in a, you know, long system. I'm disappointed to
see not racing this year.
Because it got him James.
You know, he's only had sixmonths to finish this car. So he
started it like two weeks ago, maybe a week ago James Cantrell,
(01:35:16):
we're talking about you Jamescan trail. You got rid of your
car. It was an awesome auction.
Like I put money in on it, andthen I forget who won it, but
then he had to fully I know whowon it. I'm just not gonna say
that. I feel bad for the guy.
Like, it's awesome. He won. Butthen next picture I saw of it.
Totally torn down. He was havingto totally re prep the thing,
(01:35:36):
James. Come on, man. We love youtoo much. good fun. You give me
too much Hill. Well, man, Ithink what you know, we talked
about utvs quite a bit. Beforewe get into the EMC. I got a I
got a text message while we'regoing on here. And we're gonna
jump off on we're gonna we'regonna ring Pam Hall again. Let's
(01:35:57):
call Pam Hall. I want to callhim on the ground boots on the
ground. Let's call her littleboots. They're tiny bits. So she
even answers this time. Shedidn't answer the other time.
Hello, we have Pam Hall. Okay,so everyone heard us tried to
call you a few times and they'relike that chicken picking up his
(01:36:17):
call.
It's crazy here. SoPam, you got miles miles on the
phone and you got meI'm jealous. You're there by the
way. I am sorry. I was told Icould come start working early.
So I've been here working witheverybody actually. I'm going to
start course marking I believetomorrow with JT so that'll be a
(01:36:40):
fun fun day. So that homeworkthat's exactly it. Pam you are
you are our boots on the groundright now you're you're in
hammer town you're in thebeginnings of it right it's I am
we've been watching the thetower cam from from laser town
that Cody Wagner posts up dailyprogress pics of tents going up
and RV showing up. And you flewin a couple days ago. You saw
(01:37:03):
your mom, you have to call mymom I flew into California back
on I don't know what day it was.
I've already been in hammer towntomorrow be a week that I've
been in hammer town.
And 10 days is plenty for me.
And we did really quiet I canhardly hear miles
10 days is plenty for me so goodfor you.
(01:37:26):
And then you know we said youryour you are boots on the ground
and the miles you know counterwith are there little boots? Oh,
yes. Yes. My boots on theground. This is my first
adventure and my new boots. Ihave my adventure boots. And
this is how I'm breaking them inthis year. Nice. So how's the
vibe there? What's Uh, what'swhat's the feeling what's going
on the last few days? Well, it'sbeen super busy because they're
(01:37:47):
trying to get all these all thecanopies up as you'll see if
you're watching the daily cam,all of the easy apps and stuff
not easy, because they're noteasy apps, but those style of
tents that they're putting upfor the teams and also for like
the vendors and everything.
Because tomorrow The weather'ssupposed to change. So it's
going to not be a good daytomorrow weather wise. So
they're working their butts offthe ground crew here putting in
the cables for all of the forall of the internet and all of
(01:38:11):
the light towers for the powerfor everybody. It's it's a it's
a really good vibe. Buteverybody's working their their
high knees off for sure.
Awesome. Yes. And then coursewise, you know, we've talked to
JT, you know, over the course ofthe past week, and kind of what
course looks like and then youwere gonna go out with him
today. It sounds like you guysdidn't end up doing that. But
(01:38:31):
I'm not today. I do know all thestakes are up but the directions
and all that he just has to youguys just have to drive by and
staple at this point is mine.
Correct? How fun is that gonnabe? It's gonna be a blast. I did
that with him in Oklahoma, as Isaid before, and it was so much
fun. And like Michael said, I'mdoing my homework. And as many
years as I've been coming tohammer town, I are king of the
(01:38:52):
hammers. I mean, this is only myfifth here but even coming out
here camping, I've never gone onthe course. So it's going to be
super exciting to get out thereon course and mark with him
again, the crew what we do, whatI've been told we're doing is
there's going to be youhopscotch each other. So with
all the stakes in the ground, you know, and long as you're
running like the lead nav systemor whatever GPS you have with
(01:39:15):
you and your vehicle, we havethe course and we just hopscotch
and like mark where the arrowsor you know the wrong ways all
of that you have to do all ofthat marking you just hop in a
cane and just cruise around andputting stakes up and and and
how cool is it to get eyes onthe course like I'm I'm jealous.
Oh, well, that's probably Imean, I love working with you
(01:39:38):
miles don't take this wrong,because you aren't a favorite.
But going out there on courseand marking the course that's my
favorite part so far that I'vedone. Because like we've said,
you know, helps me get up thereand talk about the course I know
exactly where the racers are.
You need to come here here earlynext year and do this with us.
Yeah, absolutely done, butWe'll see you or him, you're
(01:40:00):
going to be our subject matterexpert. Really? I mean, miles,
he's going to start playingsecond fiddle to you. And I'm,
you know, miles.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:40:10):
So what, what
else is going on out there? Tell
us tell us. Anything more abouthammer town? Are you guys on
schedule? Do you believe?
Pam Hall (01:40:18):
Yes. So far, it seems
like the crew, it's been
mentioned, because we have adaily meeting every morning,
before we all go off and do ourjobs. Everybody has their group
that they're working with. Andit seems like everybody is on
schedule, and everybody'sgetting their stuff done. And
they everybody knows whatthey're doing. So they're just
going in there working. Andthey're working hard to get it
(01:40:40):
done. But the vibe is reallygood. Everybody's working super
awesome. Together. I've actuallybeen out jogging the perimeter
of hammer town every morning. Sogets is a different perspective
on the progress. But I go and Ijog and I come in and we have
our meeting and, and Dave andRyan, they just have their list.
And everybody just does whatthey're doing for the day. Like
(01:41:02):
it's just awesome. Everything isto me because being here so
early. This is the earliest I'veever been here. And I'm like,
Wow, this is awesome. Like seenhow everybody works so well
together. Everybody, the coreof, of HammerKing is just
amazing. They work together sowell. And they can get so much
stuff done. So it's a you know, huge shout out to you and them
(01:41:24):
for making it happen. Yeah. Andthen I've been working with
Robert and Tandy, we calledevery single vendor and sponsor,
just reminders, just make surethey have all their stuff
together, like paperwork andeverything. So when they get
here, it's just an easy process, getting them through the gate,
because of course with you know, the year and the way it's gone
the past year at the gate is alittle different this year
(01:41:47):
having to either do your COVIDtest or turn in your negative
test results. So it's just alittle different this year, but
gates open today. All of usstaff, we actually all tested. I
think it was two days ago, everysingle person was negative,
which is great. Now we're allbanded because we've all just
been together for the past, youknow, week and some of them have
been January night. I mean,
Miles Hasselquist (01:42:08):
and you just
mentioned vendors. One question
we've had is food vendors. I'veheard dang brothers pizza is
gonna be there. I've heard anice cream shop, maybe some
barbecue tacos, hot dogs. Do youhave any more insight on what
kind of grub we're gonna have?
Pam Hall (01:42:23):
Yes. Okay. So that's
actually another thing that I
was helping out Tandi andRobert, they, they put it up to
me the other day to call some ofthese food vendors and get them
hired. And so I'm like, crap, ifthe food is not good, it's gonna
be on me this year. But I founda french fry guy that does
gourmet french fries, like carneasada. orange chicken fries,
(01:42:44):
like all these different fries.
The base of it all is awesometries. Yes. And everybody's
super stoked about that. But no,we have Dang Brothers, for sure.
We have the fry guy. The tacoguy is actually the same guy
that's been here with KingShocks every year, so they know
about the event.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:43:03):
Excellent.
Pam Hall (01:43:03):
And they're just yeah,
so they're strict, strictly
street tacos. And if you'vegone, you know, in the past
years to shocks taco night.
Miles Hasselquist (01:43:10):
It's like a
pizza.
Pam Hall (01:43:13):
Now they're bringing
their truck.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:43:14):
Now is there
gonna be the coffee guy that was
there.
Pam Hall (01:43:18):
Not the same one as
last year. I guess there's a lot
of different protocols that thetrucks need to have. And there's
not done being built yet. But wedo have a coffee guy coming. We
do have an ice cream person, which I don't know who wants ice
cream when it's 40 degreesoutside, but
Wyatt Pemberton (01:43:34):
we're gonna
find out.
Pam Hall (01:43:36):
everybody's excited
because it's the same ice cream
person as last year I believe.
And that guy, so
Wyatt Pemberton (01:43:43):
I can literally
hear myself getting fatter in
the microphone, thinking aboutfrench fries, and my
Pam Hall (01:43:53):
fries are gonna be
bomb. All right. He makes curly
fries too.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:43:58):
I'm there and
straight up Pam. Next year,
we're gonna get you on video towhere I see you and not miles
because you're, you're, you'reprettier than him.
Miles Hasselquist (01:44:05):
He wants you
to have the knowledge but I got
the looks.
Pam Hall (01:44:10):
I actually definitely
like because we're all trying to
conserve our water in ourshowers in our trailers because
we're all living in trailerstogether. And so we've been
going over to Dave's ranch atdinnertime and everybody's been
using the showers there. And Itold him I said, I gotta go a
little earlier. I said because Ihave to wash my hair. It's been
a week. Like I've legitly beenout here and haven't washed my
(01:44:31):
hair for a week. Miles. Youmight be able to, you know, go
for that with you, but not me.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:44:36):
Miles would ask
me if he could take a shower
with me. Like he was like, hey,go.
He'd probably asked if he couldshower. You too and it wouldn't
be sexual.
Pam Hall (01:44:46):
Oh my god.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:44:49):
That's just the
kind of guy he is. Yeah, he'll
offer it to anybody.
Pam Hall (01:44:52):
No, we've we've
actually really cool. Dave hired
somebody. His name is actuallyDavid and I've known him for
five years through another eventthat I actually am a part of.
And he's not here cookingbreakfast, lunch and dinner for
us. So we don't really have tocook. Of course, I have certain
staple foods that I have tohave. We don't really have to
(01:45:12):
cook and he's making amazingfood. And last year, I lost
eight pounds. This year, I thinkI'm gonna gain eight pounds.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:45:19):
Yeah. Oh, okay.
Well, I've, you know, I've seenyour morning Run, run pictures,
your morning run selfies. Andthat's pretty inspiring. The
ability to get out there. Iremember my first time out the
hammers in '09 Miles with us,you know, we're on the same team
at that point. And just beingable to being some Kansas
flatlanders and getting to watchthe sun come up over the
(01:45:39):
mountains. There are Means Dry.
Like, there's kind of nothing.
Nothing really comes close to itwhen you think about what
Hammertown is and what King ofthe Hammers is and getting to
witness a part of it. And makinghistory you know, these guys are
pulling off a race in Californiain this environment. All eyes
are on us. It's you know ourtime to shine. Let's not be that
(01:46:01):
guy. Let's not give anyoneammunition but yeah, we're
pretty envious of you alreadybeing out there by the way.
Pam Hall (01:46:10):
Well, it'd be awesome
if I had my crew out here. I'm
gonna have a crew out here. Weall have our crew out here but
my my peeps that I sit and talkwith all the time.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:46:18):
Oh, well, I was
hoping that you would be pre
running with JT and markingcourse today. I really am.
That's actually disappointingbecause Miles and I had practice
singing Happy Birthday for JTtoday because it's today's his
birthday.
Pam Hall (01:46:30):
I don't know where
he's at. I think he went out
with Travis. He's out setting upsome towers for the internet
towers up on the hill. Somesatellites i think is what I
heard he was doing right now orI would definitely go over and
we could totally see him happybirthday because that would be
freakin hilarious.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:46:45):
That sounds
like a terrible way to spend
your birthday with TravisWalder.
Pam Hall (01:46:51):
No, definitely not. I
mean, he has a birthday every
day. Whoa,
Miles Hasselquist (01:46:55):
we're just
lucky.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:46:56):
Well, I can't
wait to be there for a week for
Monday. I'll be there for hisbirthday a week from Monday. I
can't wait.
Pam Hall (01:47:01):
Okay. I'll have to
have to sing Happy Birthday
again. No.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:47:05):
Well, Pam, did
you have anything else that you
knew earth shattering going onout there that you want to
convey to everyone listening?
That is?
Pam Hall (01:47:15):
I do actually. So the
only thing like we've all
already been asked that whetheryou're outside or not, or inside
our trailer, so you don't haveto, because like you said, All
eyes are on us. And we'repulling this event off. I mean,
Dave Cole, and everybody hasworked so hard to make sure this
event is going. And people thatknow me personally know that
(01:47:35):
like, I don't like to wear mymask. But I do just because I
don't want to be a spreader if Iwas ever get it. But the thing
about it is out here we have alleyes on us BLM is driving
around, I mean, they've beendriving around. So when people
are here, and also, it's alsomandated that when you're on
federal lands, you have to wearyour mask. So we're out here on,
(01:47:57):
you know, the Bureau of LandManagement, we're on this
federal land, everybody's gonnahave to wear the mask. So as
much as people hate doing it,you know, so not everybody, but
a lot of people don't like doingit. When you're here, we need to
have everybody to respect therules, because they could
probably still shut us down ifthey wanted to. So I mean, I
don't know if I should be sayingthat on this podcast right now.
But at the gate, they're doingeverything they can to, you
(01:48:20):
know, meet all the codes andrules that are in place. And as
long as everybody just followssuit, and does what they have to
do to let this event go keepgoing on because it's going on
it's 100% on this where yourmask thisor something like that?
Wyatt Pemberton (01:48:37):
No, no, that's
Pam, you're you're spot on we
that's exactly we've kind ofstarted the show, you know, at
this point an hour and a halfago. So when we talked about,
you know, the first time when wetried to call you back,
Pam Hall (01:48:52):
I was actually I was
actually up turning getting my
COVID tests done and turned downand getting my band.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:48:57):
There you go.
That's, that's the mostimportant that's almost as
important as talking to Milesand I,
Pam Hall (01:49:02):
I know, I wanted to be
able to get back into
hammerfell.
Wyatt Pemberton (01:49:07):
So we went over
we went over the new what the
protocols look like you knowwhat the white bands look like
what the blue bands look likehow when you're coming into the
the welcome the Welcome Gate, going left or going right,
depending on who you are, ifyour general admission, or if
you're over there, you know, you're part of a team or media
or Ultra4 staff and tag on tothat. And then yeah, just I
(01:49:28):
think you hit hit the head ofthe nail there. All eyes are on
us. And I keep saying Don't bethat guy. And don't give that
other side ammunition to shut usdown to shut the event down.
Nobody wants to be the reasonand it does suck. We've no one
is sugar coating that like noneof us are happy. No one if there
(01:49:49):
is a human that is happy thatthey have to wear masks.
Everyone else has to wear amask. I don't know that they're
human like that's. No one hascan be excited about this, but
it's kind of what we're havingthe hoopHaving to jump through
to ensure that this event goesoff and goes on and we kill it,
we have a great time. Andeveryone races, the vendors make
(01:50:10):
their money, our sponsors, youknow, get the coverage they
need, media gets the coveragethey need, everyone gets, you
know, paid or recreates orwhatever their end goal for the
event is. You check the boxes, and you have a damn good time
checking those boxes.
Pam Hall (01:50:26):
Right, exactly.
Exactly. Yeah, it just you know,in the process was easy at the
gate coming in with this COVIDstuff like I signed, I had my
negative tests, they banned you.
I mean, it's easy to get yourit's, the whole testing is easy
to do. And you only have to doyour tests. If you're coming in
Hammertown. If you're actuallycoming within the perimeter of
(01:50:47):
hammer town is the only reasonwhy you have to do a COVID test.
If you don't do a COVID test, you're not allowed in fine.
Miles Hasselquist (01:50:52):
That's
awesome to hear firsthand
knowledge. So that is goingsmooth or that's cool.
Pam Hall (01:50:58):
I mean, because they
banned you get a separate band
to get into hammer town. And ifyou don't want to test it if you
don't want to if you want to behere but you don't want to get
tested then Soviet there'splenty of stuff going on on the
outside of hammer town. Right?
Absolutely. But But let's saylet's say your white band, you
just want to be generaladmission you don't want to take
the test you get into JohnsonValley means dry like
(01:51:19):
everything's going on. And youdecide you want to now try out
this french fry place that youjust mentioned, you hear word
that this thing so good. You cango to gate to right next to big
March big 18 Wheeler says ultrafor down the side as a big swing
open sides with Roxy, beautifulRoxy hanging out in there
selling her merge. And rightnext to that you can buy a rapid
(01:51:40):
test right there and get it donein 15 minutes. And you can get
your white band swapped for ablue band and walk around and
hammertone free and easy.
Exactly, exactly. And it's $30.
So some people opted to do amelon test and it was a self
administered test. And you knowit we were we mailed them out to
(01:52:00):
everybody. And well, the companydid and then you it was $30 to
do that or was $30 to do a rapidtest here. I understand the
point of getting it early athome you know especially for the
people that needed to travelafar but I just I waited till I
got here i mean i i've beenprotecting myself for the last
(01:52:20):
20 days before I even got herebut just because I knew the
stipulation if I was to catchit, I'm not allowed to come here
and I'm like, I'm going to kickin hammers I don't care.
Unknown (01:52:31):
I'm going to make sure
I quarantine myself My family
was careful. I wore my maskeverywhere I went and that's not
normally me but when I know Ihave something coming up I do it
but out here we like I saidwe've all been wearing our
masks, although already and weall took our tests everybody was
negative and it's just it worksout great in the COVID
coordinate coordinator, thecompany that's doing all the
(01:52:52):
COVID testing he's been out herewith us so you know they've been
all been paying attention towhat we're doing. They know that
we're being verycautious and making sure we're
not super spreaders or whateverpeople want to call it but like
I said we're all negative so weall know we're good. If I find a
mask, a pink mask or evenpurple, it can be white even
maybe even pastel yellow thathas a kind of take on it. A
(01:53:16):
cupcake with maybe like acandle. I'm gonna buy it for JT
you could totally have it madesomewhere.
Probably this is just coming tome now. Hey, Chip McLaughlin. I
know this is probably too latefor you to have it made. Chip we
make this for JT you know that'shis that's his brother. You know
what would be funny is I'msomebody that has like one of
(01:53:38):
those that I don't know what youcall it like the Cricut cutter
or whatever and then you justiron it on. iron it on. You
might find it iron on cupcakepatch or iron on I like Amazon
we might see if we can executethis JT may end up with 4000
cupcake masks by the end of theweek. Gil is walking up to him
(01:53:59):
happy birthdayit's pink it's your color
the thing though he want to killevery yeah but he would wake me
up put itup well Pam Thank you for
letting us let us drop in on youand drop in on you out on means
dry lake their belly aching thehammers doing all the work that
(01:54:22):
goes into getting getting itready for the masses to show up.
Thank you. Yeah, I can't waitfor all my peeps to show up and
people already showing up thegates open this morning. So as
of this morning hammer townfront gate is opened up my
hammer town but well I guess itis hammer town key and the
hammers front. Welcome Gate isopen 24 hours a day now. They
opened last or this morning. Whowas the first race team? Is
(01:54:45):
there a race team there? um youknow I have not seen any race
teams actually here that arecamping already bernthal trophy
trucks. I've seen them I don'tknow what they're doing. I've
just seen them like Hollenbeckgoing by but they have like
I don't know for trucks out hereor something but Brent balls
here I just don't know. No ultrafourteens are here yet. Only a
(01:55:07):
trophy truck team, but they arelike camping out here. I don't
know where they're at. Now theymay just be running back to and
from town. My money was gonna beon James Cantrell was not there
yet, so justwell Pam, thank you so much.
We'll see you. We'll see you ina week. Can't wait. Yeah, I
can't wait. Super excited. Youguys travel safe. And thanks for
(01:55:28):
having me on. Yeah, we'll catchyou later. Thanks, man. Bye bye,
dude.
Did you really just say toodalooThat's it, but
I'll say it to you later to tothe loo. Oh my god. Who is this
guy? Wow. crushing it throughthe schedule. I was glad we were
(01:55:50):
able to pick up Pam there, man.
Yo moving down. Like I saidearlier no rest for the wicked.
I mean, we've talked to Thursdayso now Friday which is
traditionally the ultra 440 400day Friday race it's no longer
right we've we've we bouncedthose guys there on Saturday now
so we've got we've got the MCman yeah the four wheel parts
(01:56:11):
every man challenge and I lovethis class because it can be you
know we have three differentclasses racing at the same time.
So it's a little tricky tofollow along. Because they're
they're all racing against eachother but they're racing in
their own class. The the stockclasses the 4600 Spyder track
stock class, the 4500 classesthe Yukon gear and axle modified
(01:56:32):
class and then the the retiredultra for cars, the custom built
ones the 4800 brand newMotorsports legends class, those
guys are you know, it's almostan ultra four car you can only
have a single shock per corner37 inch maximum DLT tires like I
said, these three class are alot of fun. The stock class may
be my favorite to watch thoseguys are insane. they you know
(01:56:54):
they can put a stock Broncostock Jeep through there and and
race with with everybody. So Iheard rumor there's a guy
running a stock for runner. AndI don't know if he's on 30 ones,
but I think he may be on 30 onescome out to race. Is that. Are
you talking about Boston Kyleand no, no, no. No old car? No,
no, Bailey Cole's old car? No,we're actually we're gonna call
(01:57:16):
Kyle. I need to talk to him.
Yeah, that's a cool story. Wetalked about the MC the MC be in
three classes. It's truly fourclasses. It just hasn't gotten
ironed out yet that fourth classbut that fourth class? Kyle
soglin. In the ed class.
Yeah. So ultra four is going tohave an Eevee class. We have its
(01:57:37):
first entry this year. It is.
Well it used to be Bailey Cole'slet him tell us. Yeah. Yeah,
we'll get there. We'll getthere. I do need to give marine.
I've actually seen Kyle Sigler.
I promise that guy, you know,he's the he's the fellow that he
worked for ultra for for a longtime. And he's one Dave Cole's
(01:57:59):
right hand guys. You know, hetexted Jesus, Matt phallus and
company and he got anopportunity to go work at Tesla.
And they've basically told youknow, he was like, I'm not I
don't know if I should take it.
And Dave was basically like,Listen, if you don't take that
job on firing you, so eitherway, you're gonna be better. You
better take it or you're fired.
(01:58:20):
But man, speaking of a TexasJesus, me and him were texting
back the other day, he's got oneof his good buddies, Brandon
Sloane. He's gonna be racing a4500 car it's his daily driver
for runner and he's converted itto make all the safety rules and
he's gonna drive it to the racetrack. That's what I heard is
key in the hammers. Okay, yeah, that's 4500 Brandon Sloane and
(01:58:42):
Texas use as a down here toslower Boehner out that's his
real name or bit.
class in a daily driver car.
That's gonna be fun. Well, realquick, doesn't doesn't also
Isn't he the coordinator isn'tMatt phallus the coordinator txg
as the coordinator for the ultrathree race, the Three Wheeler
race that goes on. This isunofficial. This is not in there
Wednesday night, and those guysare gonna have a good time with
(01:59:05):
it. I probably should havewritten down some some
information about that. It'skind of up the hill. It's
basically in the hammer heights, but a little bit south of the
hammer heights. Yeah, outside ofhammer town and they basically
have a carved out circle. Andyou they just take their Three
Wheeler synergising around untilsomebody falls off I think.
(01:59:25):
Well, there's definitely unomoss cervesa in moss in moss,
I'm looking for my phone becauseI would like to look on
Instagram because I feel likethere was a time and date on
Instagram for the Texas Jesushad listed listed. So someone
who's you know quicker to thepunch the me and look that up.
(01:59:49):
Yeah, man, the ultra Three ThreeWheeler race. They've got like a
huge green almost let's call ita Christmas tree. 20 foot tall
of Christmas lights that theypulled up it was green last year
anyway and they run laps aroundit as hard as fast as possible
on like little Honda 70s orwhatever through that you show
up with their they're insane towatch around. These guys
(02:00:12):
actually absolutely try to killthemselves. open face helmets. I
mean, basically, back when menwere men, that's who's racing
the ultra threes. I mean theseguys are these guys are a piece
of work well, yeah with withoutfurther ado, let's call Let's
call cos eglon. And let's talkabout his EV effort in the in
the EMC race. I'm just sointerested in kind of what all
(02:00:32):
he's got going on a Boston Kyle.
He was one of our core guys forquite a while.
Hello, Kyle. Hey,Kyle, what's up a
little quiet, but I think I gotyou. Let me move that. So I have
(02:00:54):
let me throw my phone underneatha headset so that maybe you can
hear him better? As an oldbuddy. Hey, I got you. What's
up?
You guys down there. And nextweek? Yeah, likewise. So how's
uh, how's progress coming on theold foreigner and give us just
kind of a quick rundown What yougot? What you how'd you make it?
How many buck connectors you hadto put on this thing? And how
(02:01:15):
are you making this thingelectric. So it all started with
I just wanted to come up, I hada four runner that the three
liter and it got all messed up.
And I was wanted to do anelectric crawler. And then I
heard that there's gonna be anEevee class and I was like, Oh,
geez, I gotta go racing man.
Dave up, actually his oldforeigner, we didn't have enough
time to make a new race car fromscratch. So I started to convert
(02:01:37):
his foreigner, basically, wetook the 22 out, we took a
Nissan LEAF and stripped it,that motor fit pretty well
between the fenders. And we justcame up with an adapter, just
like, it's pretty basic. But itgoes straight to the Toyota
transmission. And then we maderacks. And we we set the
batteries a little different inour own custom racks. And
they're going to slide in andout of the bed. So we can swap
(02:01:59):
them that fit. And we got someextra batteries so that we can
make it all day, you know, andhave the batteries charging at
unit while the car is on course.
And then we come back and we'llswap them again. And I mean,
it's relatively simple, really.
You know, the nuts and bolts Isuppose? How far can you make it
on a single charge with the youknow, is it one or two batteries
or so we have three in total, wehave to have the sort of the low
(02:02:25):
range style that that from thetypical Nissan LEAF, we have one
that's from a brand new modelNissan LEAF that has about
triple the range of the standardbattery, we can hold two
standard batteries in the bed ofthe truck at once. Or we can
hold one high capacity batteryat once. We don't actually know
what our range is. That's kindof why we wanted to do this
(02:02:47):
thing is that we can we can youknow, bench race all day about
this. But we don't actually knowhow far a kilowatt of juice is
going to take the 5000 poundsfor a runner with 35 inch tires
through Johnson Valley. Well, wejust don't we don't have hard
data yet. So we can't wait tofind out. But we hope for one
mile per kilowatt hour as anaverage. And if we got that,
then we're all set we can runall day. Have fun. Yeah. I
(02:03:11):
mentioned earlier before wecalled you that you know your
your you work for Tesla. Butthis isn't, you know, what
you're doing isn't you know, associated with him. But what
you are doing is absolutelygroundbreaking in our sport. Oh,
yeah. I mean, it's justsomething that we've been
talking about with Dave are theguys that I was, you know,
rattled around the fire. We'vebeen talking about it for years.
(02:03:31):
And it was just you know, it'sfinally Nissan leafs were cheap
enough that I could get theparts and kind of just kind of
went for it. You know, I mean, definitely the class being
opened, is why I chose to goahead and make a car.
Originally, I was just going toconvert my crawler just for fun.
But then bam, now we got a stageor a race you want actual class,
like let's do it. Yeah. And ifyou are racing in your own
(02:03:54):
class, I mean, you should winthis thing, right.
I guess you just get it. Yeah,we'll just we'll go about 20
feet and shut it down. We'vemade it the fire. So you got it.
Right.
So yeah, I mean, the way I kindof see it is, you know, we
really want competition forsure. I won't really call it
like a win, you know, per se,I'm the only car in the class.
But I'd be really interested tosee the times that we can put
(02:04:17):
out compared to the 4600. Guys,it is a 4600 car or it was we
didn't change anything on thesuspension or drivetrain except
for obviously the electricmotor. We did add about 1000
pounds of batteries in the bed.
And the motor really only makesa little bit more torque than
the 22 is that the same 100horsepower. So I wouldn't say we
got a big advantage reallyanything we added a lot of
(02:04:37):
weight. So I'm interested to seewhat the times are and rub. rub
elbows with the 4600 guys outthere. It's gonna be a lot of
fun. Well, they won't hear youcome in. That's one thing.
Kyle Segglin (02:04:49):
It's definitely
it's quiet isn't a VA for sure.
But it makes a noise though.
It's actually it's pretty good.
It's louder than I thought itwas.
Miles Hasselquist (02:04:58):
How long does
it take you to swap a battery
Unknown (02:05:01):
In the pits, again, we
were not exactly sure. Another
thing from the beginning wewanted to talk about you know,
from the outset was safety forour team. So our pit strategy is
not going to be we're not goingto be ferociously swapping them
as fast as possible. We're gonnabring the car in we're gonna
shut everything down we're gonnacheck everything everyone's
gonna have PP correct highvoltage gloves, and we're just
(02:05:22):
going to take our time and slopit correctly. No problem. So we
will probably take we can easilydo it in inside 10 minutes No
problem, but tighter if we if wekind of hustled Okay, so so so
normal if you know yes, we wecould probably get it down to a
two minute swap if we really ifwe really tried Well, I saw
video you guys have driven itit's running this isn't like
(02:05:45):
there's no like you it's not aconcept or you're not totally
you end all be all thrashing butyou know, we're in the the last
week before departure for thehammers. What are you guys
locking? Are you guys lockinganything? Well, I wouldn't say
no. We could feasibly everythingwe need to do we could
technically do on the lake bed.
So we're looking pretty goodtoday and tomorrow. Finishing up
(02:06:08):
some some more battery rackswe're gonna have eight in total.
So we have like the last two tobuild but I mean we're just
making more of the same we don'twant to figuring out anything
new. So we're just gonna executea few more battery racks wiring
the some of the batterymanagement system stuff all
stuff we've already done beforewe just need to repeat it. Yeah,
start start getting the trailerready and kind of that kind of
(02:06:29):
that sort of thing. Get ourspares on order get our tools
set out what we want to bring.
That's that's where we're atright now. So we're pretty good
spot. Do you do you have ahammers address? A hammer garage
address at this point? No, we'regonna we're actually gonna we
thought about it and we're gonnastay outside of hammer town
we're going to be camping atBama is to say off we have the
(02:06:51):
greatest camp ever. It's the onewith a really big teepee the LED
teepee with the trike race thatgoes around it. That's where our
that's where our race team isgoing to get out of and that's
our camp. You if anybody seesthe the large led TT it's right
by hammer con. It's the rise alittle bit. Go check us out
Tuesday night we got a big trekrace want everyone to come and
(02:07:12):
have fun. We have a lot of fun.
No kidding. We were just talkingabout the just is just not in
three minutes before we calledyou. We are talking about the
ultra three. Yeah. Three Wheelerrace. And I tried to describe a
TPS a better description. Idescribed it as a very large lit
up Christmas tree of lights islike a pole. But TP is a good
one. And it's kind of a littlebit south of the of the hammer
(02:07:35):
heights, which would be just tothe west of hammer town. Yeah,
exactly. Yeah, we have a greatbig race on Tuesday. Hey, you
don't even need to bring ittonight. We got it. We got
trikes and helmets, in hereracing. And we're gonna have
anybody who wants to get on atrike is more than encouraged.
We have a lot of fun. So come onup there and enjoy. Yeah, you
don't even need to bring yourown open face helmet. But do
(02:07:56):
bring your own beer. Oh, yeah.
That's typically the idea forsure. Yeah. Right. Well
participate in the party. I'm soexcited to see an Eevee take the
start at King hammers. And I'llbe you know, absolutely cheering
you on to see you guys. Get afinish an Eevee vehicle
finishing the single hardest oneday race in the world. I think
(02:08:20):
that opens up a whole bunch ofdoors and it's gonna open up a
bunch of eyes for the future.
Yeah, and we're proud of you didfor you for stepping in stepping
up, man. that's a that's a coolsigning cow. Thanks. Thanks a
lot, guys. Yeah, it's been ateam effort. I could not have
done this by myself.
Garage team. I mean, I can't sayenough about Charlie. But we'll
about Jeff and all the otherguys have helped out so much.
(02:08:42):
And yeah, it's it's it's a it'sreally exciting. We can't wait
to get some real data and thenhopefully, figure out how we
want to build next one, whichyou know, build something
faster. You know, so, this is agreat, we're having a lot of
fun. It's really cool.
Well, it sounds like it. Like Isaid, I started following you
guys on on Instagram aftersomebody tipped me off to the
(02:09:03):
Eevee. You know, I was like,I've got to check this out. I've
got to check this out. And thatwas you have to talk to your
boss much Ilan. Oh, no. Themanufacturing side. So I don't
look, you know, we don't i don'treally get to talk to, like, you
know, like research anddevelopment or anything to
vehicles and stuff. I know. I'venever thought that'd be cool.
(02:09:24):
But I think he should talk toyou. Yeah, yeah, sure. Yeah. I
mean, hopefully Yeah. I'm down.
Basically, I mean, I happen towork at Tesla, but I'm in the,
the the industrial side. We'rejust building the cars. I'm not
in like, the research side ofthings. So I that's okay. I can
see you. You know, you racing acyber trophy truck next year.
(02:09:46):
I'm pulling for you. We're gonnaget this set up. Sounds cool.
I'm in. Thank you, Kyle, forletting us call you and in talk
to us about this new class. Thatis this. It's a class of one
you're in a class all byyourself.
That's how classy you are.
You're on class in seeingsomebody show up with an Eevee.
8k, which it's been talked aboutforever. But here it is really
(02:10:07):
cool. And you're going to havemore wins and why it ever has
probably.
Yeah. This should be kind oflocked in for the first one.
Hopefully, I'd love to see somecompetition though. That'd be
great. But hopefully definitelythe next one. I hope so. We'll
see. Well, awesome. Well, weKyle, we'll see you here in a
week. Okay. Absolutely. Thanksso much, guys.
(02:10:30):
Everybody later on, man, thatguy's he's crazy and awesome. At
the same time. Like I think Ithink that he embodies the
offroad Rock Crawler rock sportsmentality of you can't tell me I
can't do it. I am pushing theenvelope in every aspect of it.
(02:10:51):
Yeah, I like what he's doingwith his backstory is cool. I
mean, he's from the east coast, kind of gypsies out to
California accidentally bumpedinto Texas, Jesus started
working for Dave was a part ofthe core team. Now he's at Tesla
building electric racecar. Imean, get on Kyle. That's
awesome. So as we're sittinghere talking about the EMC, this
(02:11:11):
will be the 10th running of theEMC. That's That's awesome. I
mean, for all parts. Thanks beenthere from the beginning. And,
you know, making it happen. Andyeah, Dino to have the three
different classes of stock classand modified the legends like
it's a wallet. Yeah. And now theEevee. But it's just cool to
have so many different optionsto race on, on, you know,
(02:11:33):
whether it's budget restraints,or you know, all the different
situations to just giveeverybody a class to come out
and have fun and enjoy the ultrapoor lifestyle. It's a it's a
great setup. Yeah, we go back inhistory. And we can remember
when Dave said at one time, there will never be more than
one class. Yeah. And there weare. We are living. So we really
(02:11:54):
haven't talked car counts.
Before we kind of move on to thenext thing that we've got to
talk about. As we talk about carcounts. Car counts. Were
hovering around 600. yesterday.
Yeah. Well over 500 there.
sniffing six. sniffing 600. Lastyear, we were on five and a
quarter. So car counts are upthis year, which is amazing. The
biggest thing that I that Iheard out of, you know, are the
(02:12:16):
people that need stuff in ourears is last year 13 Desert
vehicles this year over 100Well, I'm not counting all the
utvs but I'm talking like, okay, are they over?
100 they're stiff? 100 I mean,it'd be cool if you know, Herb
(02:12:39):
shows up with five trophy truckslike fish, you know, fish said,
I mean, granted, there's beenyou know, the millions dropping
out. I mean, that's alldifferent, but we're talking
about more cars on the lake bedthan ever. And we're all gonna
be wearing masks. It needs tolook better. Well, yeah, you
look good.
Well, the time has come for usto wrap up this show. You know,
(02:13:04):
we're gonna sign off Yeah, we'redone.
This is the part of the showwhere it gets good because we're
gonna talk 4400 This is the onewhere the big daddy's the guys
that run it all. We're gonnatalk about the unlimited four
drives. We're going to talkabout our boy Josh Bleiler who
who won last year we're going totalk about our boy Marcos who
(02:13:25):
should have won and then talenttalent tank empty about three
miles out we're going to talkabout Eric Miller he's you know
back gonna back up a third placehe but he was national champion
this year, which we won't talkabout how Josh Bleiler Oklahoma,
but man, we might.
We can be Yeah, this is this isthe big show. This is the 2021
(02:13:47):
Optima batteries king of thehammers presented by laser nut.
This is the big show the bigdance. This is what the whole
week builds to and it's gonna beamazing. I can't wait to get
this is the this is where itgoes cruise control. This is
where it gets fun. This is whereit gets exciting. And I just
can't wait for you know it'sgonna be on Saturday this year.
(02:14:08):
It's gonna be crazy. Yeah, Idon't know, man. Sorry. So as
you guys heard earlier in theshow, I'm watching this from my
couch at home because of howgood the live show is. It's like
watching the Superbowl I'm notwilling to pay that kind of
money to go watch the SuperBowl. But I do like I do like
football. So I do like watch. Iwill watch at home watch the
Super Bowl is the next day. Andthen that the chiefs are playing
that day, right? Come on miles.
Come on. Like that's like such aloaded question of surprises.
(02:14:31):
Not a bandwagon fan. Chrissummers is a real fan.
And he's a Texan. Yeah, he gotit. He gave up on his Cowgirls.
Man. So 4400 car counts. Wereright around 100 100 I believe
there's roughly 10 LCQ's. Yep.
And, and you know, you show upyou're probably going to get in.
(02:14:56):
That's happened before too.
Right there.
Some stretches. You know, lastyear we had some, some drama,
drama around the finish. Therewas some timing issues. Those
have all been worked out sincelast year, we've got USAC on
board, you suck. He's been hugeand it's made my job so much
easier. And they videotape.
They're videoing every I saytape, it's not tape anymore is
(02:15:19):
that's an old hangover, or oldhat, right? It's a, they're
videoing. They're videoing thestart finish line yet. And so
they have taught and they'rethey're taking, they're also
taking time. So they can crosscheck the times that they're
that your timer, supposedly tripthe wire and cross check it with
your car and or if your car goesacross, and there wasn't a
(02:15:39):
trigger, then they know thatyour transponder is off, and
they can still use the time. Sothey've built in some
redundancies. I think there wassome redundancies in the past,
but they still we had somefailures. But this year,
hopefully there's no drama,there's always drama, I
shouldn't say there will alwaysbe some there will be for sure
it's racing. We're, you know, adult human. Basically women,
that strap on helmets, and thengo bash each other's bumpers on
(02:16:04):
the desert. Man, miles, who doyou think is in your favorites
to, to win this thing? Everybodyalways asked me that. And I hate
it. Because I don't want to havea favorite because everybody's
my favorite. But who could winthis race? Anybody? A past King,
no doubt about it, they'veproved it. They've been there,
(02:16:24):
done that. So I'm not going tobe redundant on that. Who hasn't
won it that will win it or couldwin it. That's a long list. But
top of that listis going to be as me Paul
Horschel always leave I surelyany of the Gomez brothers. I
mean, we have such a stack listof guys out there that you know,
I can't name all because itwould be almost all of them. But
(02:16:47):
this is gonna be a show andthey're, they're gonna have to
earn it. And just like everyyear, you have to have luck on
your side, it doesn't matter howwell you've pre ran how well
you've got your pits set up, itcomes down to race day, you have
to get lucky on certainsituations. And, and, and it
used to be a you know, a race toit's a long race. Don't be
wrong, but it's a sprint of along race. Now, you can't just
(02:17:09):
you know lollygag and get laksadays nickel, you have to you
have to run? Well, I'vedescribed it or maybe I've heard
it described and I've adoptedthis I'm not sure which one of
the if I don't think I'moriginal on this one, but
described as 10,000 drag races.
I love that one, because that'swhat it is. And you're drag
(02:17:30):
racing from rock to rock, andyou're trying to win every
single drag race and you know, drag race so they rebuild their
motors every you know, two, three rounds or less. We got
around 10,000. And then ifyou're you know, in theory, you
should still be able to runafter that. Unless you're Josh
Blyler and you roll on backdoorand you lose all your oil right?
Then you really have Yeah, whenyou're in the lead, then you
(02:17:52):
really only have about threequarters of mile and you're
still gonna bake your motor. Butyou get the scepter that's good.
Right so I did I get that I gethit with that too. Like, why are
your pics and these never age?
Well, but I'm gonna give themanyway because they don't age.
Well. If I didn't have WaylandCampbell on there and if Bailey
Campbell is racing, I put himher on there too. And don't
forget cameras steel. He wasleading this race. Yeah, the
(02:18:14):
list goes on. There were so manydriver changes last year. It was
it was Dave didn't need to sellyou the full seat healing need
to sell you the front edgebecause you're on the edge of
your seat the whole time. That'swhy I said when I walked in the
door from from California lasttime, I've got that last 2030
minutes of the race and I stoodthe entire time like, Ah, man,
my top three 440 400 I think Imean, I think there's any just
(02:18:36):
like you said that there'sthere's a bunch that could win.
I'm gonna say there's probably20 it can be any one. You know,
I'd love to see like a tom wiseup there. But really, it takes
like you said stars aligning.
Paul horschel He's my guy. Ithink you know, Paul's gonna
race in the TT race or the T onerace will correct that in a
(02:18:56):
class or a B one race. A B one.
Yeah. He's gonna be out there inthat horschel missed the podium
four times this year by lessthan 30 seconds. He's to me. He
seems real consistent. Joshbeiler. Josh is definitely you
know, a guy there. But I thinkyou know, a Campbell car I'd
like I can see a Campbell car upthere. I could see it being Ryan
Miller and Bailey's car. Youknow, of course. Bailey Bailey.
(02:19:19):
Bailey Campbell when I think sheI think no offense, Waylon. I
know you're listening. I thinkyour sister wins before you do
next time. So how cool would itbe to have a queen of the
hammers just for just foreverything? I mean, we almost
had it last year, Bailey, Baileyand Ryan were so close. And they
had was a power steering pump.
(02:19:41):
The water pump as a water pumpfully liberated itself. And that
was it. I mean, that's all shewrote. Yes. I'd like to hear
Ryan Miller he's over in theCampbell camp. He's still
filling in driving duties in youknow, for Bailey Campbell,
because she is with child youknow, come along. And Brian
Croft, sir expanded a month orso I think yeah.
real soon and then of courseBrian Crofts he's in you know
(02:20:02):
Campbell car. He's a very formalcompetitor in that car learning
that car well, but then man Iput it into it's a toss up for
me the Miller pro chassisbetween Josh Bleiler and Eric
Miller those two together. Ithink Josh is the cleaner driver
at the end of the day, but Ericcan push I think very harsh.
(02:20:25):
Yeah, like harder. Like I don'teven know how to drive some of
time in a solid axle like howare his eyes still focusing on
what's in front of me and by howthat paint shakers riding?
And then outside of that, it canbe anybody's day in a UFO car.
If you are if you're racing theJoe Thompson UFO car, it could
(02:20:45):
be easily beard and you know, the guys that are in those cars,
right? You've got you know, theall the Gomez brothers. You got
wyrick in there, you've gotJaron Gunter. drinka Pereira has
that brand new and it is notracing as as of now. I don't
believe he has his other carlocked, locked and loaded and
100% I'm not racing it. He saidit's not 100% as of yet, so I
(02:21:10):
don't think he'll be racing itbut he you know, will Time will
tell but I wish it was I lovethat car. Man. 4400 so then when
we talk about total mileage, wedon't have total mileage yet.
Yeah, last year was 212 I thinkthis one may be a little longer
I think there's there's threelaps if I'm not mistaken. And
last three is going to begnarly. All the rock drills with
(02:21:32):
no pits on that last lap andthen going down that new kings
graveyard. It's gonna be atestament This is last year you
know there's a lot of talk thisrace is easy. This year is not
gonna be easy. Yeah, I try I'velooked up in I suck at trail
names over there in that part ofthe world. But kings graveyard
is basically the sap towards thesouth end of the course of the
(02:21:55):
south end of the rock trails buton the backside of that saddle
so if you're standing in hammertown, and you look towards the
sunrise, you see the saddle kindof the end of the mountain
range. You see that saddle onthe south end you kind of go
over that and then you make aleft and you will find the
entrance at the bottom of Kingsgraveyard now those guys are
coming down that and it's goingto be gnarly. And maybe at
(02:22:17):
night. I don't wish this onanybody with someone gets broken
in there. They are traction.
Yeah, it's gonna get it's gonnaget interesting it's gonna get
it's gonna get fun for us. Do weknow about the first point that
they hit first rock trails it'sgotta be after the first set
right we're gonna get 76 miles adesert probably that so the
normal desert the first desertloop similar for my
(02:22:38):
understanding and then all ofthe major rock trails are up but
it's a guessing game. I mean alot of people have put out their
their ideas because we know thetrails we just don't know how
they're aligned. And I don'tthink anybody's gonna know it.
Nobody is going to know it untilThursday the 28th at noon if I'm
not mistaken and which I thinkis cool. I think it kind of
(02:23:00):
equalize the playing ground alittle bit go out there and pre
run pre run pre run but youdon't know where your pre
running and i i think that'sfair for the people that are
coming from the Millers. Nobodycomes from all the way out east
I mean, I haven't actually havea different opinion of that we
actually know every record weknow the rock trail names and we
know the direction they areavailable if you're going to pre
run rocks that's what you needto be preparing you need to pre
(02:23:23):
run that list and in thosedirections. Now what order they
come in that's anybody's guessright? And I guess it doesn't
matter you're right if you canpre run the rock section that's
that's worth one and last I meanyou can tumble the desert loser
race Don't get me wrong but therock trails if you can pre read
them and get out there and do itdo it it's good. I mean Sunday I
feel like you just want conjuredup your Nick Nelson your
(02:23:46):
internet Nelson there with youcould tumble in the desert in
the open desert and lose it all.
Pour Nick last year in his truckis T one. Man I still feel bad
right morning. God it was aheartbreaker. Well, you know
that that all said, I think thiscalls for one thing. There's
(02:24:07):
only one thing that could hit meand do another but though Yeah,
let's let's do it. Let's call. Idon't know man. Who? Who? Who?
Who in our picks. Would we callI would call. I don't know, man.
Big B. I think we call call acurrent brainer and key King.
Josh Wyler. Let's see if JoshBoyle answers Who knows?
(02:24:31):
Mattia texting Tom, we'recalling that would help. I'll
leave him a voicemail. Yeah.
Hi, this is Josh would beleaving a message and I'll call
you back. Thanks. Well, lookiehere we got calling in here. Did
we get Mr. Josh Blyler?
Wyatt Pemberton (02:24:53):
Yep, gotcha.
Josh Blyler (02:24:54):
Sorry. I missed
you, man.
Miles Hasselquist (02:24:55):
Your tag
you're it.
Wyatt Pemberton (02:24:58):
Well, you got
Miles, Got Wyatt, and everybody
we've got the form the current Ialmost had former that'd be
terrible Josh. I'm sorry. Thecurrent defending 4400 King of
the Hammers Josh Blyler a Big BMotorsports racing out of
Pennsylvania.
Josh Blyler (02:25:19):
Are you doing jobs
good guys?
Wyatt Pemberton (02:25:21):
I'm doing good.
So one quick question, Josh, would you have answered if I
would have called first? Or whatdo you do? Absolutely. Sure.
Yeah. Miles actually wanted toask what you're wearing.
Josh Blyler (02:25:37):
awkward but okay.
Wyatt Pemberton (02:25:38):
So hey, so here
we are, we've kind of done we've
actually made it through theentire week talking about King
of the Hammers about each of theclasses, racers in each class,
you know, strategies COVID allthat jazz. But we've we've came
to the culmination right this isthis is the pinnacle of the
week. This is the Saturday race.
This is the 4400s This is theUnlimited four wheel drive cars.
(02:25:58):
This is what everybody you know, buys tickets for to come see to
see you guys run. You're thecurrent defending King. Amazing
run last year. You you've had anamazing year, we did kind of
talk about you what happened toyou in October in Oklahoma, and
missing a turn and actually endup giving up national
(02:26:18):
championship to to your buddyEric Miller. That's, I'm sure
that still stings a little so Iknow, we know, you are motivated
to come back with a vengeance.
You want to back up that? That4400 win and keep that scepter
you know, above the mantel therethe of the old casa, what's the
plan?
Josh Blyler (02:26:37):
Well, that all
sounds great. But to be honest,
it's probably very far from thetruth. I mean, don't get me
wrong, it would be awesome toback it up and bring that thing
back home. But it's not reallythe way I am, I guess, you know,
to to win this thing was so farout of my expectations that it
(02:26:58):
just still seems like a fairytale. So you know, we're our
plan is probably veryunconventional you know, we're
gonna go to this race it likewe've raced every single race
we've ever entered. You know,we're going to go there to
finish you know, we're going totake chances when needed, but
for the most part, runconservative, keep the car
together. It's a long race. Youknow, when Dave listed the the
(02:27:21):
trails we were going to beracing on, you know, he just
kept saying up, it was upeverything. So it's, I think
it's going to be a brutal longrace, a lot of carnage and you
need to make it to the, to theend before you can even think
about winning the thing. Sothat's how we're gonna attack
it. We just want to go for afinish and see where it shakes
out. So with all the rock trailsup, that should favor the Miller
(02:27:44):
pro chassis. Absolutely. This isour kind of deal. You know, the
the fast desert stuff is fun.
It's a blast, but it's notreally nice cars don't do bad at
it, but it's not what I wasgonna do all day long. I would
certainly took a differentweapon. So these these cars Love
Rocks, they love.So we're gonna,it's our kind of gig for sure.
Wyatt Pemberton (02:28:08):
And speaking
about the Miller car, how's uh,
how's your dad's car coming?
Josh Blyler (02:28:11):
Great. We just
those cars got loaded up this
morning at noon, actually. Andthey're headed west there.
Either. Whatever wood it's aboutseven o'clock. So they're seven
hours deep across the country.
So what uh, how much drive timeyou haven't like, because you
guys just finished it right? Imean, you started from a bare
chassis and built it all the wayup. Yeah, that thing has not
driven further than about 30feet.
Unknown (02:28:37):
For all intents and
purposes, it's the same cars the
other three mechanically it'sexactly the same. We made a lot
of electrical changes we put amotek system in this thing and
really tried to jazz it up andgive it technology so there's
there's a lot of unknowns andthat's why we're leaving so
early. We want to go out thereand get some miles on this thing
and work out some bugs andhopefully have it ready to rip.
(02:28:58):
Are you gonna Are you gonnadrive it when you shot shocked
in it? Absolutely not.
ignore my friend miles here withsuch a loaded question. We know
we know what happened with yourlast new car that you guys
brought to the hammers andshocked tuned it didn't it
didn't end well. It did not atall. Nope. You know, that's the
(02:29:20):
car that we totaled that car twoyears ago. It was brand new took
it to the desert. You know, justbeing a bunch of jackasses and
water the thing up shock tuning.
totally my fault nobody else'sfault.
You know, took that car homerebuilt it over a year. The
first race that ever reallyentered the first race that
absolutely ever entered was kingof the hammers 2020 and we know
(02:29:42):
the history there right? It won.
It did it did a great job itcame back and was ready to do I
think so with that with what youguys have going and kind of the
the plan and the strategy. Idon't find your plan to be
unconventional. I do still putyou guys favorites based on your
calm cool.
collectiveness behind the wheel, though a lot of the course
(02:30:02):
hardness preparedness and a lotof the a lot of the rock trails
are up. I do I find that's goingto favor you guys and, and the
ability to the steering that youguys have the angle that you
guys can get out of your frontaxles steering in the rocks. I
think you guys are gonna beheavily favored. Do you have any
concerns about any of the newtrails that have had their names
(02:30:26):
drop? Yes, just King graveyardthing. To be honest with you. We
talked about it. We're figuringon getting there. We'll be there
by Monday, unload the cars andhead straight there and go give
it a rip. You know, I've neverbeen on it drove drove past it,
you know, knowing where it's at.
And hearing where it's at. Youknow, seeing Cody Wagner's
footage of those guys driving onit. So it's, it's interesting.
The, the name I take offensething that's hurtful, but, you
(02:30:49):
know, it is what it is. And I'mexcited to go do it. It's
something new. I've never beenon it. So we're gonna we're
gonna go drive around and seewhat we can do. And are you
taking four cars out? Assume Doyou have both your old cars for
pre renders? Yes. Yep. So that'sthe idea. We're gonna pound the
test out of those two things andtry to and we gotta get some
(02:31:11):
miles on the new car. You know, just to make sure we got the
bugs worked out but other thanthat, try to keep the two
racecars kind of clean andpristine and ready to go on race
day. You know, the whole COVIDthing screwed us up a little
bit. You know, traditionallywhat we did was we'd go right
from Reno nationals. And we'd goup to Johnson Valley and toy
around for a week and that wasour pre run trip with Reno not
(02:31:33):
happening this year. And thenOklahoma was the Nationals race
that's only halfway across thecountry. So we talked about it
as a group as the name we'reonly halfway there it's kind of
silly. We're in the middle ofbuilding this new car. Let's
skip the pre run trip at the endof the year get this new car
done go out to hammers a weekearly and and do our pre run
there. Make sense system worksif you have to spare cars. It
(02:31:56):
doesn't work to go there for aweek and pound the piss out of
them and then expect on the racewithout a tremendous amount of
work on your hands. Yeah, absolutely fair. I want to jump
back to Kings graveyard Iabsolutely will start calling
that thing that kingmaker if ifyou backup your when we can
change the name of that you knowthat there's not a trail out
(02:32:16):
there that can't have the namethe name changed on it right.
Well, maybe backdoor but all therest I mean, if you call us you
there's there will be a trailthat will be named King breaker
at some point. I'm sure but butyou can also but by you my words
right now I mark my words willmake a new trail somewhere out
there called the kingmaker.
Fair. Fair enough. I like that.
(02:32:39):
So as you guys, you guys wrapthis up your cars. Your four
cars already already left outthere going to get there. Your
plans? You're going to be there.
What on the 25th? Today, right.
Monday? Monday? Yes, that iscorrect. Yep. So this airs,
you'll be on the lake by by thetime this airs are very close
(02:32:59):
to. Well, that's that. That isexcited. Now is your hammer town
address very similar to where ithas been in the past down in
South hammer town? Yes, thelocation is the same. It's now
205 laser net instead of 205.
savvy but same same location, just a different name. Gotcha.
Okay. And that's the quietthat's the quiet side of town.
Right? You know that it has HOAdues.
(02:33:23):
Get off my lawn. Is the old guysaid I guess but no, we like it
over there. It's nice and quiet.
You don't get disturbed. Youknow, the media people like
miles, they generally get lostand don't find you. So it's kind
of relaxing. If you're gettingthere on Monday, have you guys
already done your COVID test?
Yeah, well, actually, we we kindof lucked out, I guess you call
it luck. Rates right aroundChristmas, it hit the race shop.
(02:33:46):
And it pretty much ran throughall of us. So we all had it. I
think there's three guys on mycore group that did not get it.
And they just went out theretest today and came back
negative. So they're good to go.
But for the rest of us the COVIDwas kind of a golden ticket. We
got it got it out of the wayreally didn't affect us just
kind of got it would have neverdreamt about it even being
tested. But then we found theloophole that if you had a
(02:34:08):
previous positive, you don'tneed to get tested. So there was
our golden ticket and we tookadvantage of that. Excellent.
Excellent. Excellent. Excellent.
Well, have you talked to yourbrother Eric Miller, about his
efforts? Yeah, I know. They'restroking and getting things
done. The I don't know a lot ofspecifics, but I know there's
(02:34:28):
they're doing what Miller campdoes and and they'll be ready
for sure. Awesome. Well, Josh, Ididn't have any more questions
for you. I don't want to jinxshare or get you to release any
secret sauce. I don't know thatthere is any. But you certainly
had an amazing run last year.
And you've been you're one ofthe best drivers out there in
the last four or five years. Soman, thank you for coming on.
(02:34:49):
You know, even just a littlequick glimpse behind the curtain
about you in the happy Pappynumber two, and kind of what
your strategy is in how long youguys will be on the
like men, I mean, you guys aregonna be formidable. Yeah,
absolutely. I appreciate thecall. And there's certainly no
secret sauce to our program,we're kind of standing motto is
(02:35:09):
average average guys havingabove average fun and, and
really, that's what it's allabout, you know, we're, we're
having a blast. It's all friendsand buddies. And we're doing
this because we really enjoy it.
And it's just, it's really neatto be part of something that so
few people in the world ever getto experience and we're living
it so it's it's just, it's adream. I love it. And you guys,
and you guys are good, folks. Imean, that's I like to see good
(02:35:32):
people doing good things. Well,Josh, good luck. I'll see you
here in a week, man. Exciting.
And thank you for letting us uh,pick your brain here for a few
minutes tonight. Not a problem, guys. We'll see you on the lake
bed and we'll go have some fun.
All right. We'll catch youlater. All right. Hey, guys.
class act. humble. humble. thatdude's awesome. So yeah, here's
(02:35:57):
a plan. Hi. I know everyone'sgoing oh, you know, Josh is a
winner. He wants to go out andwin for sure. But yeah, so does
everybody does everybody. Butyou know, he has the capability
to win. But he's so humble abouthow he does it, and how he goes
about it. And their program isso well ran. I mean, they are
prepared to the tee. How wouldyou think about that, that their
(02:36:19):
whole race shop had had had theCOVID already? That's Uh, yeah,
that's, that's while I'm, Iguess that's good. Maybe that
plays in. Maybe that's a playsinto their hand.
Or stressing is I haven't takenmy test yet. I'll take it in a
week, I guess somewhere inthere. And then and then fly.
I'll be taken on any time. So wecruise through it. miles, man,
(02:36:41):
we're there. We have. We havegotten there. We've gone through
everything. You know, one thingthat we didn't talk about?
Money, money, money, money.
Show me the money purses, over ahalf a million dollars in cash
prizes heading out to the racerslike that's, that's a lot of
money. That's incredible. That'sa half a million. Yeah, I know.
(02:37:04):
I think we talked about purse alittle bit with fish when we
were talking the desert stuff.
And we were he was you know, shocked as we were that we
haven't seen a just a massiveinflux of desert cars showing up
for the chance that, you know, persons that they've never seen
before. Well, I mean, here weare. We may be surprised you
know that that 600 car countmaybe 700 by the time it's all
said and done. Can you imaginein 2007 13 cars ran this race in
(02:37:28):
2008 was it 75 in 2009 they keptit I think 100 and then here we
are we're racing almost everyday of the week starting in it's
470 Saturday to Saturday soeight days straight man oh man
