toolbox podcast is brought to

helping tech leaders like you,and the frustration of low
performing teams, and losingexcellent employees, so they can
increase productivity by 50%. Gohome on time, and sleep better
(00:21):
at night.
Paul Simkins (00:23):
Hello, and welcome
to the tech leaders toolbox. I'm
Paul Simkins. And we're herebecause how you lead today
determines how your teamsucceeds tomorrow. This is
Episode 54 of the podcast. Ifyou've ever driven a car, you
have likely had the experienceof driving through heavy fog.
Now, down here in Florida, weget fog. And it's not as bad as
(00:45):
it is in other places. Butthere's been days where there
has been fog, especially in themiddle and areas where the fog
is so heavy that you can barelysee 50 feet in front of you
maybe even 10 feet in front ofyou. And when you're driving
through that, it's hard to knowwhere you're going. Have you
ever felt like that with yourbusiness as well? Well, today,
(01:08):
we're going to talk about somethings to help you gain more
clarity. Plus, I have a greatoutdoor recipe on tap is going
to be a great grilled cheeserecipe for meat lovers. Are you
ready? Let's go.
(01:29):
building a business, building acareer, building a life can feel
a lot like you're going througha fog. And in fact, that's
precisely the problem for manypeople. They spend their time
trying to navigate through fog,no examples, you have a
businessman with no realdirection, who leaps at the next
(01:52):
new thing and offers to offer inhopes of profits to turn the
business around. For the personwho goes all in to the next
guaranteed scheme that's goingto make them millions instantly?
How many people know somebodylike that? Right? They're always
jumping on this, oh, this isgonna get rich quick, this is
(02:12):
gonna get me. You have the guyor girl who obsesses over the
next person they meet that theythink will truly make them
happy. And that is one of themost dangerous ones because it
creates dangerous relationships, and dangerous results when it
doesn't pan out. See, manypeople will make decisions when
(02:35):
things aren't going well. Theylook for relief in the despair
of the valley. So this is youknow, this is something I
remember from one of my mentors, john C. Maxwell, he talks about
this, that people look forrelief in the despair of the
valley, instead of waiting forthe clarity that comes from
being on the mountaintop. Andwhen you're experiencing the
(02:58):
darkness of the valley, it'salways tempting to make changes
that you hope will relieve thediscomfort. In other words, when
we are at our most discomfort,or highest levels of discomfort,
we will sometimes go out of ourway to try to become comfortable
again, even to the point ofmaking irrational Decisions,
(03:24):
decisions that we would nevereven come close to making in any
other kind of situation, butwill make them during those
moments of extreme discomfort inthe hopes that we can become
comfortable again. And whathappens many times is that
people try to navigate throughheavy fog that we talked about,
(03:47):
and in desperation, tend to doone of two things. They either
do nothing. Or they sit thereand think for example, if you're
in a heavy fog, and you juststop your car on the highway,
because the fog is so heavy andyou do nothing. Well, as you
might guess, that's not exactlya formula for success. It's not
(04:09):
moving you forward. And in fact,it's putting you in great danger
because you've got a good chanceof getting run over. The other
thing that people do as analternative is instead of doing
nothing, they'll simply leap atthe first thing that seems to
promise any kind of an immediatereturn. And when I think in the
business world of this one ofthe biggest examples I've think
(04:32):
of this is that during times ofstress, and this happened back
in the nut back in the 90s andearly in 2000 when we had some
economic laws that the firstthing organizations do is they
jump at layoffs making layoffsthat because we're having a
(04:53):
downtime and economic downtime, then the first thing to do is is
trim the fat and for some reasonThey think the fat are the
people that are actually doingthe job and producing the
product and serving thecustomers. And there's the ones
who go, again, this happenedaround 2007 2006 are actually
closer to 2010. I believe itwas. Back in 2010. We're having
(05:17):
an economic downturn and many, many organizations had large
numbers of layoffs. A lot ofsmaller businesses look to get,
you know, get rid of most oftheir staff, and overworked the
ones that are there saying, hey, you're just going to have to
double down and things just itjust tumbled down like that. And
(05:38):
it's the irrational decisionthat they jumped immediately at
for immediate relief, thinkingthat layoffs were the solution.
Now, now, don't get me wrong.
There are times where layoffscan be unavoidable for a variety
of reasons. But it's not ourfirst option. And in fact, it's,
(05:59):
it's typically should be ourvery last resort. And here's
something else you need to knowabout layoffs. If you are in a
situation where you need to havea layoff, and all likelihood, it
is because the leaders made themistake. Somewhere along the
(06:20):
lines, we didn't see far enoughahead, to be able to prepare and
navigate for it.
Or we were so short sighted thatwe seek immediate relief from
something instead of looking forways we can seize the
opportunity and maximize it. sosuccessful, successful people
(06:46):
have clarity in where they'regoing, clarity and what they
want clarity in the path to moveforward. And when that path
becomes foggy, they'veanticipated that and they are
taking steps to navigate theirway through the fog, avoiding
(07:09):
making the irrational decisions.
Knowing that somewhere along theway, the path is going to clear
up for them. And they joyfullyproceed on their journey. And
the path they're following itmay wind the hills may seem
steep at times the road getrocky on occasion. And of
course, fog will seep in everynow and then. But they forge
(07:33):
ahead with the determinationbecause they can see where
they're going. So how do youachieve this level of clarity in
your business or in your life?
I've noticed four key elementsto the successful people that
(07:53):
helped them achieve clarity andbe able to forge ahead. And the
first thing is that they knowwhat their core values are. They
know what they stand for. Sowhen it comes to time to make
decisions, everything they do,every decision they make every
(08:15):
bit of planning. Everythingrevolves around those core
values. Those core values arethe one thing that they are not
going to sacrifice, no matterwhat it's the non negotiables of
their life or theirorganization. It's the very core
and it factors into everydecision they make everything
(08:38):
they do. So honesty is a keycore value integrity is a key
core value. And if you want tointegrate those kinds of values
in everything you do, it makesyour decisions easier. I've
often used the quote before fromactually Roy Disney who says
(08:58):
making decisions are easy whenyou know what your values are.
So successful people know whattheir core values are. The
second thing is they definetheir purpose. What they are
driven to do what they want toaccomplish, where it is they
want to end up, they always havea very strong vision of where
(09:25):
they want to end up. The road toget there is not always clear.
There are some things you justcan't anticipate, no matter what
nobody really anticipated, aregetting hit with a virus so
severe that it will upset theglobal economy
Unknown (09:52):
for a year
Paul Simkins (09:55):
will result in
1000s 10s hundreds of 1000s of
deaths. Maybe I think actuallymillions of deaths around the
world. Nobody anticipated that.
Know what you're driven to doknow what you want to
accomplish. Successful peopleknow their purpose. They also
visualize the end of the roadagain, they see where it is that
(10:19):
they're trying to go. Sometimeswhen you're in that fog, all you
can think about is the next 10feet in front of you. But you
know that you're on the road, because you're trying to go
somewhere, you have to knowwhere that end of the road
leads. And finally, they keep aneye on the path in front of
(10:40):
them. Because this is whereyou're going to encounter those
rocky roads. It's where you'regoing to spend all your time
looking ahead, the roadblocks infront of you may stop you before
you can get there, if you're notpaying attention. So just
remember, overall, it's not theproblems that make your life so
special. It's the clarity youget when you are determined to
(11:04):
see your way through it. We'llbe back in a moment.
Producer (11:12):

Paul Simkins (11:41):
All right, so
again, this part of the show I
always like to share because ofmy love for outdoor cooking. I
love it so much do smoker I havea grill, I have Dutch ovens and
I do a lot of cooking over openfire. I love to do that kind of
stuff. And I love it so much. Iactually created a Facebook
group called smoke indash. Andme and all my friends we hang
(12:04):
out there and we invite you tocome and join us as well whether
you're whether you're anexperienced outdoor cooker, or
it's just something thatinterests you or you're new or
you just like hearing aboutrecipes, come out and join us on
the smoking dash Facebook group.
And during the show here Ialways like to share an outdoor
cooking recipe. Most of them aresomething that I've tried before
and had success with. And, andso a lot of the recipes that I
(12:28):
share if you're not into outdoorcooking well that's okay, you
can do this inside as well on astove or in an oven. And this
one today I think you're reallygoing to enjoy. This is a
grilled brisket and cheeserecipe. Oh, this is just so
good. And so for what you'regoing to need for this of
(12:49):
course, is you're going to needa barbecue brisket. So it needs
to be already cooked barbecuedbrisket, it can be sliced or it
can be shredded either way. Andyou want some thick sliced
bread. You know again, don't getyour standard, buy it in the
store, you know, like WonderBread or anything like that you
want something a little thickersliced. And then you're going to
(13:09):
want some kind of a sweet savoryspread. I like bacon jam. That's
something new for me I gotintroduced to it actually, I
wasn't even didn't even know itwas a thing and my daughter gave
me a jar of it for as aChristmas present. Bacon jam and
Oh, that's good. It's got again, that combination of sweet and
(13:30):
savory to it. And you're goingto want some of that. And then
you're going to want slicedcheddar cheese and sliced
grilled cheese. And then I likefor this if Do you like to use
spreadable butter. So the firstthing you want to do is again,
you want to take your smokedbrisket and you need to be if
it's not already sliced orshredded, you're going to cut it
(13:51):
into half inch slices. If it'stender yet still firm enough to
cut otherwise just shred themeat. Then using a spreader
knife, you're going to put alayer of the sweet savory spread
bacon jam or whatever. Put thaton one side of two slices of
bread for each serving thatyou're going to do. Then you're
(14:11):
going to put one slice ofcheddar on one piece of bread
slices graer on the other.
You're going to put two to threeslices of the brisket on top of
the cheese on one slice of thebread. Place the other one on
top of course where you'remaking a sandwich right and then
spread butter, a thin layer ofbutter on one side of the of the
(14:34):
sandwich mmediately placed thaton the grill with the butter
side down. Butter the other sidewhile you're waiting about you
want your grill to be at aboutmedium high heat. And again,
you're going to grill on the oneside until it gets a nice brown
crust usually about threeminutes. Then you're gonna flip
(14:54):
it over. Do the other side forabout three minutes or so or
until the cheese is melted. Andoh, you would just like in
combination with the spread thetwo different kinds of cheeses
and of course, the smokiness ofthe brisket is just a thoroughly
enjoyable sandwich, grilledbrisket and cheese. And if
(15:15):
you're interested in thatrecipe, I put all these recipes
out on the smoke indash Facebookgroup, you can come out to
facebook and join us there andhave access to that recipe and
more. If you're not a bigFacebook, or that's okay, you
can just send an email to me atPaul at boldly lead.com. And
(15:35):
I'll be glad to send you a copyof the recipe. Alright, so this
week, we talked about how to seeyour way through the fog, making

core values, know your purpose, see the end of the road, while
