In this episode we explore “Front Line Justice” and discuss the role of Justice of the Peace; how the many duties they perform and responsibilities they have directly impact you, the constituent. Please join us as we welcome Ms. Teri Nunley, former Justice of the Peace, representing Precinct 1, and current Justice Dave Neighbor of Precinct 2 to discuss the role and responsibilities of a justice of the peace. We provide a historical overview of the office, including its origins in Texas and the changes it has undergone over the years. The justices of the peace explain their daily duties, which include handling traffic cases, criminal cases punishable by fines, and civil cases. We also discuss the challenges they face, such as managing a heavy workload and dealing with emotional cases like evictions and truancy. The conversation touches on the importance of community involvement and the need for term limits and rotation of justices of the peace to bring fresh perspectives and prevent career politicians from dominating the office. In this conversation, the guests discuss various aspects of the Justice of the Peace (JP) role in Kendall County. They cover topics such as the county budget and salaries, the importance of JPs in the community, case studies involving juvenile offenders, preventing crime and accidents, reconstituting Project CARE, individualized solutions for cases, creative approaches to juvenile offenders, the role of mentors in a child's life, the importance of community support, addressing truancy issues, investigating deaths and suspicious cases, and the overall role of JPs in the county.
