All right, it's time to journeywithin and go beyond.
Welcome back Today.
I just wanted to share with youone of my favorite parables.
I read this one a couple ofyears ago and it was really
impactful, so much so that Ispent a good week and the next
(01:32):
couple of months just kind ofmulling over what it exactly
meant for me in my life, and ifyou know my story, you'll know
that I come from a corporatebackground and I was always in
this pursuit of the next thing.
So, moving from Dallas, where Igrew up to New York City and
then I decided to move into thepublic relations and marketing
(01:58):
space and I had always imaginedat some point I would become a
CMO.
But over time, just seeing theway that the space evolved and
how stressed out people were, Ireally just kind of lost my
interest in that.
And when I finally became theVP of public relations for a PR
(02:20):
agency in New York City, that'swhen my health really took a
turn.
And maybe you're in a similarplace in your life where you're
looking at the work you're doingand, yes, you might be paid
very handsomely, but what's thereal cost?
And it is a parable that youmight have heard before, but its
(02:53):
message is timeless and it'sespecially relevant for those of
us who are striving for bothprofessional success and
personal fulfillment.
Now, since this isn't ahypnosis audio, you can
certainly listen to today'sepisode without closing your
eyes, but if you are in a placewhere you'd like to rest, you'd
like to just listen, it's okayto do that too.
(03:21):
An American investment bankerwas taking a much-needed
vacation in a small coastalMexican village when a small
boat with just one fishermandocked.
The boat had several largefresh fish in it and the
investment banker was impressedby the quality of the fish and
(03:44):
asked the man how long it tookto catch them.
The Mexican fisherman repliedonly a little while.
The banker then asked why hehadn't stayed out longer to
catch more fish.
The Mexican fisherman repliedhe had enough enough fish to
(04:06):
support his family's immediateneeds.
The American then asked butwhat do you do with the rest of
your time?
The fisherman replied Well, Isleep late, I fish a little play
with my children, take a siestawith my wife, stroll into the
(04:30):
village each evening where I sipwine and play guitar with my
amigos.
I have a full and busy life.
Senor, the investment maker, scoffed I have an Ivy League MBA
and I could help you.
You could spend more timefishing.
(04:56):
With the proceeds you could buya bigger boat and the proceeds
from the bigger boat would thenbuy you several boats until
eventually you could have awhole fleet of fishing boats and
instead of just selling yourcatch to the middleman, you
could sell directly to theprocessor.
Eventually you could open yourown cannery.
(05:20):
You could control the product, the processing and the
distribution.
Then the banker added of courseyou would need to leave this
small coastal fishing villageand move to Mexico City where
you could run your growingenterprise.
The Mexican fisherman asked but, señor, how long will all of
(05:50):
this take?
To which the American repliedI'd give it a good 15 to 20
years.
But then what, asked theMexican man?
The American laughed and saidWell, that's the best part.
When the time is right, youwould announce an IPO and sell
(06:11):
your company stock to the publicand become very rich.
You could make millions,millions, senor.
Then what?
To which the investment makerreplied then you would retire.
(06:31):
You would move to a smallcoastal village where you would
sleep late, fish a little playwith your kids, take siesta with
your wife, stroll to thevillage in the evenings where
you could sip wine and play yourguitar with your amigos.
(07:11):
Each time I read this parable,I'm struck by how accurately it
portrays the rat race and theAmerican ideal of success.
No-transcript.
We aspire to be listed in theForbes magazine's richest people
.
We turn to social media and seeinfluencers showcasing their
lavish vacations and theirfast-track journeys to success,
(07:34):
with the promise that you canhave this too, as long as you
buy their magical $1,000 product.
This is a conversation that werarely have.
Beyond the relentless pursuitand the setting of our goals.
What is it that we're reallyafter?
For many of us, it's thisunconscious feeling that we're
(07:58):
chasing.
We want to feel abundant, free, significant.
But here's the twist to all ofthis the peak of an emotion,
that emotion that you've beenchasing.
(08:18):
It only lasts for a mere 90seconds.
So maybe another vital aspecthere is to consider the value of
living in the present.
You know, we often are pushingout our joy and our happiness
into the future.
The formula sounds a little likethis when I achieve or possess
(08:38):
X, then I will be Y, or then Ican have Y.
When I get that promotion, I'lltake my kids on a vacation and
spend quality time with them.
When I win that account, I'llfinally get some rest.
What would happen if you choosethose outcomes today?
What if you chose to spend timewith your kids?
(09:01):
What if you chose to rest orchose to have a meaningful
conversation with someone?
What would it be like for youto enjoy your time, your life,
right now?
Because the truth is that wecan find joy and pleasure and
gratitude in the small momentsof every day.
So it's worth getting curiousabout what that looks like for
(09:24):
you Now in the upcoming weeks.
I'm thrilled to share a newseries of episodes here on the

my archives with a founder whostarted her company based on a
dream, and in this dream, hergrandmother revealed a secret
(10:07):
