Hello, and welcome to Revery TrueCrime. I'm your host page. There's
a statistic according to the FBI thatsays when a woman is met with foul
play, the chances she somehow knowsher attacker is ninety six point four percent,
(00:26):
and completely random attacks on women areless than four percent. So let's
say a woman happened to be avictim of foul play in a state she
had only been residing in for twentythree days. She didn't know anyone when
she arrived, so the number ofpeople who she actually was around regularly and
(00:51):
knew for twenty three days wouldn't behuge. Kristen Motta Feri maybe new thirty
to fifty pool. Roughly, thereis a nine out of ten possibility that
at least one of those people,if nothing else, knows what happened to
(01:11):
Kristen on June twenty third, nineteenninety seven. Let's begin Danbury, Connecticut,
June first, nineteen seventy nine,a teacher named Debbie and an electrical
engineer named Bob welcomed their little girl, Kristen Deborah Motta Ferry, into the
(01:36):
world. Together, Bob and Debbieraised Kristen and her three sisters Alison,
Lauren and Meghan and Charlotte North Carolina. Kristen and her family were frequent travelers
and loved embarking on new adventures.Kristin even went on a school trip all
(01:57):
the way to Russia. Once Kristingraduated Providence High School a year early,
she went to Matthew's Catholic Church andshe worked at Wolfman Pizza. In nineteen
ninety seven, Kristen was attending NorthCarolina State University, where she majored in
(02:20):
industrial design, and she completed herfreshman year being the recipient of a Park
Scholarship. She excelled in the programand was one of the brainiest scholars.
Only the top finest students were selectedto be Park Scholars. Kristin made the
(02:43):
decision to venture to the San FranciscoBay Area that summer all on her own,
to attend the University of California,Berkeley, just for the summer.
She had plans to study her passionphotography. Those credits would go towards her
degree at North Carolina State University.Kristen had her future all planned out.
(03:09):
She and her family had gone tothe Bay Area before on vacation, and
she was thrilled about her impending summerthere. Even though her parents were happy
for her, they were a littleanxious that their second to oldest daughter was
moving that far away from them.As most parents would, they had their
(03:32):
concerns. After all, they wereable to spend time with Kristen whenever they
wanted. When she was attending NorthCarolina State University. At first they told
her that she couldn't go because itwas just too far away. But Kristen
was a determined young woman and pleadedwith them every day. Taking into consideration
(03:58):
how Kristen was an awesome, wellrounded child who never got in trouble and
made phenomenal grades, they said yes. Searching for a room, Kristin used
Craig's List and found a Victorian housein Oakland on Jane Avenue. There,
(04:18):
Kristin had four male roommates. Sheimmediately went out job hunting and quickly snagged
two jobs. Kristen was a busyyoung lady, working part time at the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art andfull time in the Crocker Galleria mall at
(04:39):
Spinelli's Coffee Shop which is now knownas Tully's Coffee. When she would get
off work in the afternoons. Sheloved exploring and seeing the sights of this
new city that would be her summerhome. She kept in touch with her
parents, making sure to call themall the time. She was having a
(05:01):
blast, and her parents were reallyglad that she was enjoying herself. With
that they could breathe a little easierknowing she was adjusting well to her new
surroundings and keeping in touch only afew weeks after she turned eighteen. On
the twenty third of June nineteen ninetyseven, Kristen was done for the day
(05:26):
at the coffee shop around three thatafternoon. She told her co workers that
she might go to Baker Beach, close to Land's End Beach, and asked
them for directions. They told herthe directions and also said that she could
take the bus there. About fortyfive minutes after Kristen had left work,
(05:48):
she was still in the mall. She didn't clock out that day either,
which was the first time she hadever forgotten to do so. Her co
workers saw her walking around the secondfloor of them all with a mysterious blond
woman who was wearing a green batpack. That day, Christian was captured on
(06:12):
video surveillance as she took out cashfrom her bank. It's not certain if
she left them all with this womanor not. The mystery blonde has never
been identified or come forward, eventhough so many have publicly begged for her
to. That night, her roommatesclaimed she never came home. They didn't
(06:38):
think anything of it since Christian enjoyedsightseeing around San Francisco a lot, exploring
her new surroundings, and this wasn'ther first night to not show up.
The guys didn't know if she decidedto stay with a friend that night,
maybe even a boyfriend. Therefore, they didn't report it to the police.
(07:00):
The roommates didn't really know each otherall that well, except two of the
brothers who lived there. They werealways busy with their own lives, doing
their own things. The next daywas the first day of photography class.
Kristen was so enthusiastic about her futureand attending that class. She would not
(07:27):
miss it for the world if shecould help it. But that day,
her seat and class was empty. She also did not collect her four hundred
dollar paycheck from the coffee shop. Her roommates had no idea that she didn't
go to school that day, Butwhen she never came home and they found
(07:47):
out that she didn't show up forwork, they knew something wasn't right.
Kristen definitely would not flake out onher job. Back in North Carolina,
her parents sat by the phone, expecting Kristen to call as usual and to
(08:07):
tell them about her first day atschool, but that call would never come.
They brushed it off. Maybe shewas tired or really busy. One
of Kristin's friends had not heard fromher in a few days and she had
a bad feeling. This friend calledKristen's parents. She told them something didn't
(08:31):
feel right and she couldn't get ahold of Kristen. Kristen's father, Bob,
called the house and left a voicemessage. On June twenty fifth,
one of her roommates called him back, saying Kristen hadn't been there for three
days, but if she happened tocome back, they would tell her to
(08:52):
call them right away. On thefourth day, her roommates finally took her
since seriously and now they were concerned. They called Kristen's parents and let them
know. They found out Kristin hadnot been showing up to either of her
(09:13):
jobs and nobody had seen her sinceshe was with the blind lady and them
all After work. On the twentythird, they informed Bob they were going
to call the police and report Kristinmissing. Worried to death, Bob and
Debbie booked a flight immediately to SanFrancisco, arriving on the twenty seventh of
(09:37):
June. They went to the OaklandPolice Department and filed a missing persons report.
For three days, the police didnothing. On Monday the thirtieth,
the police finally took their bloodhounds outto see if they could track Kristen,
sent to give them an idea ofwhere she possible went the day she disappeared.
(10:03):
The dogs led the police to themunicipal thirty eight Geary bus outside of
the mall at the end of thebus route. The bloodhounds also picked up
her scent at Sutro Heights Park, but lost her scent nearby. Law enforcement
interviewed Kristen's co workers and they toldthem about the twenty third, how Kristin
(10:28):
wanted to go to Baker Beach, possibly to a party that was supposed to
be happening there, and about theblind woman that she was walking around the
mall, with one manager said hewas almost positive that Kristen was alone when
she left the mall. The policeand the family have begged the woman to
(10:50):
come forward, but for some reasonshe has not. Some theorize that this
mystery woman, especially since she hasrefused to come forward, may have been
used as bait to lure Kristen tosomeone else for nefarious reasons. The police
(11:16):
continued to interview anyone who knew Kristen, and multiple officers, along with National
Park Service rangers, combed through theplaces. At the beach, the bloodhounds
hit on her scent At Ocean Beachon the west side of San Francisco.
The waters were freezing and the waveswere rough. It's possible she stopped there
(11:43):
to take photographs. This definitely wasn'ta place anyone would go swimming. It's
also a very popular location for touriststo see the coastline. The dogs led
the police to the Cliff House, another big tourist attraction. It's a restaurant
(12:05):
and bar with a gift shop. You could also watch the sea lions close
by as they swam around and sunbathedon rocks. It's a place that Kristen
would have loved and likely would takea lot of pictures there. The last
location the dogs led police to wasthe edge of a cliff with a gorgeous
(12:31):
view of the ocean. It's unlikelythat anything sinister happened here, however,
as we know, it's not impossible. Although there are usually always people around
taking pictures, as Kristen may havedone. Officers talk to people hanging out
(12:52):
there, but none of them couldremember seeing Kristen to Speculations are that maybe
she accidentally fell into the ocean orsomeone kidnapped her at that spot. However,
police surmise there are always people around, and that would have been nearly
(13:15):
impossible without either one of those thingsbeing seen by someone. There is an
episode of Unsolved Mysteries about Kristen's disappearance, and the officer with the bloodhound stated
quote, we got down to thebeach area and came to a point where
the trails seemed to have stopped. That's a very treacherous part of the San
(13:39):
Francisco waterline. Numerous people each yearare washed off the rocks and are never
seen again. So it was adistinct possibility that she had in fact fallen
into the ocean. Kristen's father isn'treally on board with that theory, saying,
(14:01):
quote, we really don't believe that'swhat happened to Kristen. It's a
very tourist oriented area, so thereare always people around. If she had
fallen into the water, somebody wouldhave seen something. At this point,
the police told Kristin's parents there wasno proof of foul play and suggested that
(14:26):
she may have simply disappeared on herown. But Kristin's parents knew better and
they did not accept that as ananswer. They know their daughter would never
do that. Plus, she wasbe unhappy to be in San Francisco and
had been telling her parents and friendsalready how pumped she was to go back
(14:50):
to North Carolina for her sophomore year. Kristen had everything going for her.
Why would she pick up and walkaway from her life? It doesn't make
any sense. One characteristic about Kristenwas that she was naive. As BookSmart
(15:11):
as she was, she wasn't verystreet smart, especially in this new environment.
Co Workers recalled Kristen going to aconcert and Mountain View at the Shoreline
Amphitheater. When the show was over, she missed her train, which was
the last train going back to Oakland. Kristen had planned to make her bed
(15:37):
on a train station bench until arandom guy she met at the show talked
her out of it. Instead, she went with this stranger and crashed on
his brother's couch. He did driveher to work the next morning, and
thankfully he turned out to be agood person who she became good acquainted pans
(16:00):
with, just in case. Thepolice did interview this young man and came
to the conclusion that he didn't haveanything to do with Kristen's disappearance. It's
just the fact that she was sotrusting right away that really disturbed law enforcement.
(16:22):
Back in North Carolina, the studentsshe knew were shocked and overcome with
grief about this whole situation. AtNorth Carolina State University, the scholars went
around the campus and the city ofCharlotte posting missing person flyers and yellow ribbons.
(16:44):
What was thought to be a breakin the case happened the next month.
On July tenth, John and Numa, who lived near the mall where
Kristin worked, called KGO TV,an ABC news station of affiliate in San
Francisco, with a shocking revelation. He claimed that Kristen was murdered by two
(17:07):
women who had dumped her body nearPoint Raise under a bridge as a result
of a lesbian love affair gone wrong. Later, John had a confession to
make to the police. He saidhe had falsely blamed those women because they
may have been plotting to get hisgirlfriend, Jill Lampo, who was also
(17:32):
their coworker, fired from their jobat the local YMCA. Did John know
Kristen, He claims he never knewher and just wanted to get revenge on
the two women. However, policefound something quite disturbing when they searched his
(17:52):
apartment. A good amount of bloodwas found and it was DNA tested.
As it turns out, the bloodbelonged to a cat. John did place
several personal ads for women in theBay Area and would strong arm them into
(18:14):
having sex with him. Another oddclue was found at his girlfriend, Jill's
apartment her diary. Jill's diary hada few pages ripped out of it,
and she said John was the onewho tore the pages out. These pages
(18:36):
were the same time frame that Kristinhad been in San Francisco. The police
asked Jill, why is this diarythe way it is, and she said
that some of the stuff that wasin there could come back to hurt John.
She never went into any more detailthan that, Did John really tear
(19:00):
the pages out? Did Jill doit? It seems there was something there
to hide. In January of nineteenninety eight, Kristen's fellow park Scholars had
a great idea to bring awareness toKristen's disappearance. Since ESPN was always at
(19:22):
the university's basketball games, airing themon television, they handed out yellow ribbons
at one of the games to grabthe viewer's attention. Not only did the
coach wear a ribbon, but sodid the coach of the team they were
playing against. The plan worked,ESPN started to get calls from people who
(19:45):
wanted to know what was with allthe yellow ribbons. So many calls,
in fact, that the sports commentatorsdecided to take a few minutes of airtime
to discuss Kristen and her disappearance. In May of nineteen ninety eight, police
now expressed that they believed wholeheartedly thatKristen's disappearance involved foul play. They were
(20:14):
just not sure what happened, butthey set out to find answers. Bob
and Debbie did their own investigating onthe side discovering jammed in Kristen's trash can
in her room a Bay Guardian newspaper. The paper had an offer the week
(20:36):
of June eleventh, where submitting adswere free of charge. Circled on that
newspaper was an ad that read friendsFemales seeking friends to share activities who enjoy
music, photography, working out, walks, coffee, or simply the beach
(20:57):
exploring the Bay area interested, callme. Even though it's not verified that
Kristin wrote the ad, it wassomething her parents believed she would write since
those were all of the things sheenjoyed. It's also suspected if someone else
(21:18):
wrote the ad, Kristen may havecircled it. Is it possible that the
blond woman she was seen with atthem All wrote the ad. Usually,
the authors of these ads are loggedinto a computer. Unfortunately, the office
at the newspaper had gotten a newcomputer system and all the old files were
(21:41):
deleted for the next year. Kristen'sparents diligently went back to San Francisco many
times to post Kristen's missing person flyersand spread the word about the reward they
were offering lie of nineteen ninety eight, Bob and Debby up the reward to
(22:03):
twenty five thousand dollars, hoping themoney would entice someone to come forward with
information. Oakland police are sure morethan one person had to know what happened
to kristin Mota Ferry. They constantlyasked for anyone with any information to come
(22:26):
to them and tell what they know, or even call anonymously. A short
time later, Bob and Debby wenton the Maury Povit Show to talk about
Kristen's disappearance on a wider scale. They also increased the reward money it was
(22:48):
now at fifty thousand dollars for anyinformation about Kristen's whereabouts or knowledge of who
had a hand in her disappearance. They wanted so badly to believe their daughter
was still alive somewhere, but intheir hearts they knew it was more than
likely foul play, and they weredetermined to find the person or people responsible.
(23:18):
Detectives were feeling a little bit defeatedas they continued to follow up on
every call they received and kept reachingdead ends. The police wanted to talk
to John Anuma again. John hadbeen dismissed in the beginning, as law
enforcement thought he was just trying toget revenge on the two women he accused,
(23:42):
and after speaking with Jill, theythought there was no evidence that tied
him to Kristen's disappearance. However,John began to look more suspicious over time.
Three men went to the police sayingJohn had done horrific things to them
(24:04):
from rape, sexual assault, andabduction. One of the women told police
quote, he hit me over thehead and said, you know I'm going
to have to kill you. Ican't let you go. Then he turned
around and said, now you knowwhat happened to kristin Mota Ferry. Thankfully
(24:30):
the woman was able to get away. She said the statement he made was
no joke and she was positive hehad something to do with Kristen's disappearance.
During their quest to find John, they discovered that he moved to his native
Hawaii, where he was living withhis girlfriend. John and the detectives talked
(24:56):
on the phone, and John saidhe would fly back to take a polygraph
test. He vehemently denied having anythingto do with Kristen's disappearance, and he
passed the polygraph exam. Many yearslater, in twenty fifteen, there was
(25:17):
an independent search with a world classCadiver dog of the house on Jane Avenue
where Kristen had resided. The Cadiverdog sniffed around, and suddenly the canine's
nose detected the scent of human remainsaround the vents of the basement, as
(25:37):
well as the drainage pipe downhill fromthe home. The dog's owner, Paul
Dotsy, who used to be aMammoth Lake's police sergeant, told the Oakland
Police it would be best to digout this concrete piece in the basement and
question her former roommates again. Twoyears later, February twenty seventeen, a
(26:03):
forensic anthropologist from the University of Tennesseenamed doctor r. Pad Vass went to
the house. He brought with hima patented device he made that identifies human
decomposition chemicals, and he scanned theresidence with it. That device pinpointed between
(26:25):
the house where Kristen was living andthe house next door, which was being
used as a halfway house for peoplewho violated their parole. On the Fine
Kristen dot com blog, it statesthat Kristen's parents had no idea she was
living just steps away from a placeof potential danger. Kristen didn't know about
(26:52):
the halfway house when she moved ineither. Now, Kristen always walked home
from work, and sometimes she didn'tmake it back to the house until well
after eleven at night. Something mayhave happened to Kristen anywhere on the route
that she walked home, or evenright before she made it into her doorway.
(27:21):
Posted to find Kristen dot com isa plea from another neighbor. It's
called Battle for the Soul of Adam'sPoint New a dozen photographs providing the rot
at the core of two seven eighthJane, which was the house next door
to Kristen. It says, quoteA piece of this plea says, as
(27:45):
most of you know, two seveneight Jane Avenue has been a nuisance for
years. It was a convalescent hospitalfrom the sixties until the state closed it
down for licensing violations in nineteen five. Since then, two seven eight Jane
has been home to a pitbull breedingand fighting ring, raising and slaughtering rabbits,
(28:11):
a methamphetamine laboratory, several roach coaches, which was closed by the Health
Department for poisoning Laney College students andalso for selling drugs. A rooming house
for mainly fifty one fifties or mentalcases. A poorly supervised program for youth
(28:32):
with gender issues two seventy eight.Jane opened again recently under the cover of
deception, lies and deceit. Insteadof a facility for nine to fourteen year
old youths as we were told itwould be, it was a halfway house
for juvenile probationers. That's right.Bounced from juvie halls in Alameda, CONTRACOSCA,
(28:59):
and San Francisco. They came straightto Jane Avenue. Now there are
new owners of that house and theyhave been nothing but kind to the Moda
fairies. Paul Dotsy's belief is thata crime happened there and not a burial.
(29:22):
As far as the basement, theexcavation of the floor turned out to
be a dead end, revealing nothing. An officer said that the ground,
which was dense clay, would makeit very difficult for anyone to dig up
and bury a body there and thencover it back up again. Not impossible,
(29:47):
but very very difficult, Detective PaulDotsy said, quote. There are
other explanations such as cremation ashes orIndian burial sites. Near a concrete slab
at the bottom of the porch stepsat the house next door, there was
(30:10):
a chemical spot which identified that humanblood was there. When the DNA test
came back, the blood was reportedlya match to Kristen, which they discovered
through testing Bob and Debby's blood, which they had given a while back for
any testing authorities may have needed itfor. The Oakland Police's public officer responded
(30:34):
to this discovery, saying the informationhad not been given to the police department.
Quote at this time, the informationwe need from doctor Vass to collect
samples for his human decomposition testing hasnot been forwarded to the department. Additionally,
(30:55):
no information regarding the more recent bloodtesting conducted it on the porch has
been disclosed to the department. BothPaul Dotsy and doctor Vass were adamant that
this was not true at all,and the police department had more than enough
(31:15):
information to perform their own tests.Doctor Vass stated, quote, all OPD
needs to do is bring their owndogs out to that site and see what
happens. Earlier, doctor Vass hadwritten an email saying quote. I am
(31:37):
quite sure that Paul also told OPDhow to look for human specific volatile organic
compounds and collected soil samples. Allyou need is a gas chromatograph coupled with
a mass spectrometer, which every universityor crime lab in the world have.
(31:57):
The procedure is very straightforward. KimL. Pascalini founded the National Center for
Missing Adults, which is a UnitedStates organization helping out and locating adults who
have gone missing. Kristen was eighteenwhen she vanished, and the resources that
(32:22):
were accessible for looking for her werelacking. In nineteen ninety nine, Representative
Sue Meric presented Kristen's Act. PresidentBill Clinton approved the law in two thousand.
Kristen's Law aided law enforcement and familieswho have been affected by people they
(32:44):
care about over the age of seventeendisappearing. Christen's Law also provided one million
dollars a year to help organizations likethe National Center for Missing Adults. In
two thousand and five, Kristen's Lawexpired and funding ran out, but as
(33:07):
thrived due to volunteers. Close friendof the family, Dennis Man, refuses
to give up. He has stuckby the family in their efforts to find
Kristen. Ever since he saw herstory on the news in North Carolina,
he has followed any little clue possible. At the time of the breaking news,
(33:31):
Dennis was working at a homeless shelter, and even though he didn't know
the Modi Fairy family, he feltcompelled to help. He even went to
San Francisco, walking tirelessly up anddown the streets handing people missing person flyers.
Unbeknownst to Dennis, he would getimmersed into Kristen's case for twenty plus
(33:55):
years. Talking to S. F. Gay, he said, quote,
I never thought it was going tobe this long. I always thought that
I was going to run into somebodywho knew her, or the cops were
going to find her, or shewas going to show up somewhere. I
remember in the early days, itwas okay, I just stay another week.
(34:20):
I'll just stay another week. Thenext thing, you know, the
months and the years just accumulated.Dennis would end up crashing many nights in
his vehicle and joining a gem justso he could wash off. He has
traveled all through northern California, talkedto countless people, and has flown to
(34:44):
Hawaii and Thailand just to follow allleads possible. Dennis owns the website find
Kristen dot com and has a verydetailed blog of the twenty three year case
summary, which I highly recommend everyonego and check out. Dennis received a
(35:07):
tip that I have thought about alot since reading his blog. In June
of twenty twelve, John and Numa'sgirlfriend, Jill Lampo, called her uncle
in hysterics and at some point heruncle began to jot down notes. They
(35:28):
talked for about four hours as shevented about everything that had been going wrong
in her life. Jill's uncle didnot want to come forward about this because
he didn't want to be involved, but Jill's aunt took charge. She was
on Google looking up her niece,Jill Lampo, and she found the fine
(35:51):
Kristen website, where she emailed Dennisa copy of her husband's notes. There's
a picture of the handwritten note onfine Kristen dot com. Kristen's name was
never mentioned, but Jill did sayshe helped in an unspeakable abduction and murder
(36:13):
when she was dating someone who wasvery controlling. This takes us back to
the diary the police found at Jill'splace, there was another name inside,
Matthew Luke. Jill and Matthew dated. Eventually she broke up with him to
(36:35):
be with John Auma. It wasn'tlong after Kristin disappeared that Matthew began working
at Spinelli's Coffee shop after being referredthere by his friend Kelly Strathman. Kelly
was a young man who had workedalongside Kristen. Dennis Mann wanted to talk
(36:58):
to Kelly back in nineteen ninety eight, since he was interviewing everyone that had
worked with Kristen. One person toldDennis the way to get Kelly's number would
be to call Matthew Luke. Theywere good friends and he would definitely know
how to reach Kelly now. Atthis time, it was May of nineteen
(37:21):
ninety eight, and Dennis had noidea who this Matthew was or that he
could possibly be tied to Kristen's disappearance. Dennis was simply calling to get Kelly's
number. When Matthew answered the phone, Dennis introduced himself, and before he
could finish his sentence, Matthew screamedat him at the mention of Kristen's name.
(37:47):
Even before Mota Ferri left Dennis's mouthand then Matthew hung up on him.
Why would Matthew explode like that?In two thousand and eight, the
FBI said it was fair to saythat Matthew was the center of the investigation
(38:07):
and they were treating him very carefully. In the beginning of the episode,
I said, the FBI statistic forwomen knowing their assailant is ninety six point
four percent. If Kristin knew herassailant, it is very possible that Kelly's
(38:28):
connection to Matthew, Jill, andJohn could have something to do with Kristen's
disappearance, especially since Jill made thatharrowing confession to her uncle. The police
have always had their eyes on Johnand Matthew, but there's no evidence as
(38:49):
of now to tie them to herdisappearance, and they are not suspects.
These are all theories that have beenthought of by the family and close friends
who have been living this nightmare forover twenty years. It's also important to
note they don't think Kelly had ahand in Kristen's disappearance. He's merely connected
(39:15):
to Kristen by association. Kristen's sisterLauren told ABC seven quote When I think
about twenty years having gone by,I feel quite robbed on having missed out
on the experience and Kristen not beinghere part of our family for the beautiful
(39:37):
milestones in our lives. Kristen's fathersaid, quote, In a perfect world,
I'd love to learn Kristen was aliveand some unbelievable thing happened to her
and she would come back to joinour family. Short of that, not
(39:58):
knowing what happened to her is theworst. So if we're able to get
closure and determine this is where Kristenis and get justice for whoever did this
to her, that would be atremendous relief to her family. Kristen's case
is still an open case, andif you have any information on Kristin Motaferi,
