Speaker:
We are on day five of our ADHD (00:00):
undefined
Speaker:
friendly advent study, so let's (00:01):
undefined
Speaker:
dive in. (00:03):
undefined
Speaker:
But first, if you are new here,
my name is Rachel. (00:04):
undefined
Speaker:
I'm an ADHD and a Jesus lover (00:06):
undefined
Speaker:
and I help other women with (00:08):
undefined
Speaker:
chaotic brains seek, find and (00:10):
undefined
Speaker:
live the abundant life that (00:11):
undefined
Speaker:
Jesus offers. (00:13):
undefined
Speaker:
This is a free advent study I'm
doing. (00:14):
undefined
Speaker:
There is a workbook that also is
free. (00:16):
undefined
Speaker:
You can download that at the
link in my bio. (00:18):
undefined
Speaker:
And again while I am doing this
for free, if you would like to (00:21):
undefined
Speaker:
support the study and support me
by buying me a coffee, you can (00:23):
undefined
Speaker:
do that in my bio as well. (00:26):
undefined
Speaker:
Okay, let's get into it for the
day. (00:27):
undefined
Speaker:
Oh, and last thing, if you are
just finding me right now, you (00:30):
undefined
Speaker:
are not behind. (00:32):
undefined
Speaker:
No one is ever behind here. (00:33):
undefined
Speaker:
This is intentionally designed
to be low effort, high impact (00:34):
undefined
Speaker:
for my fellow ADHD girlies or
girlies with chaotic brains. (00:38):
undefined
Speaker:
So for those of you who are just (00:43):
undefined
Speaker:
joining us, we are doing a song (00:45):
undefined
Speaker:
every single week leading up to (00:47):
undefined
Speaker:
Christmas. (00:49):
undefined
Speaker:
So this week's song is oh come
oh Come Emmanuel. (00:50):
undefined
Speaker:
If you haven't listened to it in
a while, go listen to it. (00:53):
undefined
Speaker:
Skillet just released a
fantastic version, and then we (00:55):
undefined
Speaker:
have a scripture passage for
today, as well as a journaling (00:58):
undefined
Speaker:
prompt for today, and all of
this is in the workbook. (01:01):
undefined
Speaker:
Very nicely laid out. (01:04):
undefined
Speaker:
There is a suggested schedule
for how to complete the study. (01:05):
undefined
Speaker:
If you know a little more
structure is your jam that is in (01:08):
undefined
Speaker:
there, or you can just complete
it however your heart desires. (01:11):
undefined
Speaker:
So I will stop saying, let's get (01:14):
undefined
Speaker:
into it, let's actually get into (01:16):
undefined
Speaker:
it. (01:17):
undefined
Speaker:
And if you hear wild squawking, (01:18):
undefined
Speaker:
one of my chickens is laying an (01:20):
undefined
Speaker:
egg right now, so please ignore (01:21):
undefined
Speaker:
that. (01:22):
undefined
Speaker:
So we are reading Luke one
twenty six through thirty eight (01:23):
undefined
Speaker:
today in the sixth month. (01:27):
undefined
Speaker:
Oh, I'm in the ESV, by the way. (01:29):
undefined
Speaker:
In the sixth month, the angel
Gabriel was sent from God to a (01:31):
undefined
Speaker:
city of Galilee named Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man (01:34):
undefined
Speaker:
whose name was Joseph, of the
house of David. (01:37):
undefined
Speaker:
And the virgin's name was Mary. (01:39):
undefined
Speaker:
And he came to her and said,
greetings, O favored one, the (01:41):
undefined
Speaker:
Lord is with you. (01:43):
undefined
Speaker:
But she was greatly troubled at (01:44):
undefined
Speaker:
the saying, and tried to discern (01:46):
undefined
Speaker:
what sort of greeting this might (01:47):
undefined
Speaker:
be. (01:48):
undefined
Speaker:
And the angel said to her, do
not be afraid, Mary, for you (01:48):
undefined
Speaker:
have found favor with God. (01:51):
undefined
Speaker:
And behold, you will conceive in
your womb, and bear a son, and (01:52):
undefined
Speaker:
you shall call his name Jesus. (01:55):
undefined
Speaker:
And he will be great, and will (01:56):
undefined
Speaker:
be called the son of the Most (01:58):
undefined
Speaker:
High. (01:59):
undefined
Speaker:
And the Lord your God will give (01:59):
undefined
Speaker:
to him the throne of his father (02:01):
undefined
Speaker:
David, and he will reign over (02:02):
undefined
Speaker:
the house of Jacob forever, and (02:04):
undefined
Speaker:
of his kingdom there will be no (02:05):
undefined
Speaker:
end. (02:07):
undefined
Speaker:
And Mary said to the angel, how (02:07):
undefined
Speaker:
will this be, since I am a (02:09):
undefined
Speaker:
virgin? (02:10):
undefined
Speaker:
And the angel answered her, The
Holy Spirit will come upon you, (02:11):
undefined
Speaker:
and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you. (02:13):
undefined
Speaker:
Therefore the child to be born (02:16):
undefined
Speaker:
will be called holy, the Son of (02:17):
undefined
Speaker:
God. (02:19):
undefined
Speaker:
And behold, your relative
Elizabeth, in her old age also (02:19):
undefined
Speaker:
has conceived a son. (02:22):
undefined
Speaker:
And this is an. (02:24):
undefined
Speaker:
And this is the sixth month with
her who was called barren. (02:25):
undefined
Speaker:
For nothing will be impossible
with God. (02:28):
undefined
Speaker:
And Mary said, behold, I am the
servant of the Lord. (02:31):
undefined
Speaker:
Let it be to me according to
your word. (02:34):
undefined
Speaker:
And the angel departed from her. (02:36):
undefined
Speaker:
Now, before we get into the
journaling prompt for the day, I (02:39):
undefined
Speaker:
want to talk a little bit
because this response that Mary (02:42):
undefined
Speaker:
has seems very, very similar to
the one that Zechariah gives (02:45):
undefined
Speaker:
just a few verses before
Zechariah is told, hey, your (02:48):
undefined
Speaker:
wife is going to have a baby,
and he's like, ah, how is that (02:51):
undefined
Speaker:
going to happen? (02:54):
undefined
Speaker:
My wife and I are old. (02:54):
undefined
Speaker:
And he then is rendered unable (02:55):
undefined
Speaker:
to speak until the child is (02:58):
undefined
Speaker:
born. (02:59):
undefined
Speaker:
Meanwhile we say, Mary, Here we
see Mary saying, how will this (02:59):
undefined
Speaker:
be since I am a virgin? (03:03):
undefined
Speaker:
They seem like very, very
similar responses. (03:05):
undefined
Speaker:
So it kind of seems like God is (03:07):
undefined
Speaker:
giving an inconsistent response (03:09):
undefined
Speaker:
when given the same prompt, (03:10):
undefined
Speaker:
essentially. (03:13):
undefined
Speaker:
But there's a really important (03:14):
undefined
Speaker:
distinction here that I want to (03:16):
undefined
Speaker:
look at. (03:17):
undefined
Speaker:
So looking at the verse,
Zachariah says in verse (03:18):
undefined
Speaker:
eighteen, we're still in chapter
one, verse eighteen. (03:21):
undefined
Speaker:
And Zechariah said to the angel,
how shall I know this? (03:24):
undefined
Speaker:
For I am an old man, and my wife
is advanced in years. (03:27):
undefined
Speaker:
Zechariah, there's kind of an
arguing back. (03:31):
undefined
Speaker:
And we know this by looking at
the word here for. (03:34):
undefined
Speaker:
No, he says, how shall I know
this? (03:37):
undefined
Speaker:
And the word here is ginosko,
which means to know for sure. (03:40):
undefined
Speaker:
So he basically is going, okay, (03:45):
undefined
Speaker:
and how am I supposed to trust (03:46):
undefined
Speaker:
you? (03:48):
undefined
Speaker:
Whereas when we look at what
Mary says, she says, and the (03:48):
undefined
Speaker:
angel said to Mary. (03:52):
undefined
Speaker:
And Mary said to the angel, how (03:53):
undefined
Speaker:
will this be, since I am a (03:55):
undefined
Speaker:
virgin? (03:56):
undefined
Speaker:
And what we see from how Mary
phrases her question. (03:57):
undefined
Speaker:
I'm going to post a screenshot
of the words up here, because (04:00):
undefined
Speaker:
there's several and I won't. (04:03):
undefined
Speaker:
I don't want to take too much
time going through them, but (04:04):
undefined
Speaker:
essentially what we gather from
the words, the original words (04:06):
undefined
Speaker:
that build up how Mary phrased
her question is, how is this (04:09):
undefined
Speaker:
going to happen? (04:13):
undefined
Speaker:
It's not asking to be convinced. (04:14):
undefined
Speaker:
It's asking about the mechanics,
which, when you think about it, (04:17):
undefined
Speaker:
makes perfect sense because she
is think about it. (04:19):
undefined
Speaker:
She is a young girl who has who (04:23):
undefined
Speaker:
is a virgin being told, hey, (04:25):
undefined
Speaker:
you're going to have a baby in (04:28):
undefined
Speaker:
you. (04:29):
undefined
Speaker:
And as far as she knows, there
is one way for that to happen. (04:29):
undefined
Speaker:
So she very much has a spirit of (04:33):
undefined
Speaker:
like, all right, give me the (04:36):
undefined
Speaker:
details. (04:38):
undefined
Speaker:
Whereas Zachariah is going, oh
yeah, prove it. (04:39):
undefined
Speaker:
So that kind of section has (04:43):
undefined
Speaker:
always bugged me because I'm (04:44):
undefined
Speaker:
like, they basically did the (04:45):
undefined
Speaker:
same thing, like Cain and Abel, (04:46):
undefined
Speaker:
right? (04:48):
undefined
Speaker:
They both brought offerings to
the Lord, but they got very, (04:48):
undefined
Speaker:
very, very different results. (04:51):
undefined
Speaker:
It comes down to the heart and
we can tell a little bit more (04:53):
undefined
Speaker:
about where their hearts were at
and the questions they were (04:56):
undefined
Speaker:
actually answering by going back
to the original text. (04:58):
undefined
Speaker:
But let's go ahead and proceed
with today's journaling prompt. (05:02):
undefined
Speaker:
Again, all of this is in the
workbook that you can get for (05:05):
undefined
Speaker:
free at the link in my bio. (05:08):
undefined
Speaker:
Otherwise I will read out the
prompt to you. (05:10):
undefined
Speaker:
You can pause it, go answer it, (05:12):
undefined
Speaker:
and then we'll keep talking (05:13):
undefined
Speaker:
about it. (05:14):
undefined
Speaker:
So today we are on Scripture
journaling prompt number four. (05:15):
undefined
Speaker:
Has God ever asked something of (05:19):
undefined
Speaker:
you that you felt completely (05:20):
undefined
Speaker:
unprepared for? (05:22):
undefined
Speaker:
How did his plan for your good (05:23):
undefined
Speaker:
become clear as that situation (05:25):
undefined
Speaker:
played out? (05:26):
undefined
Speaker:
Or if you're still in that
season, how do you see his (05:27):
undefined
Speaker:
goodness even in the darkness? (05:31):
undefined
Speaker:
So before we talk about it,
pause this video, go do some (05:33):
undefined
Speaker:
journaling on this prompt, and
then come back to me for me. (05:36):
undefined
Speaker:
A couple years ago, I and I've (05:41):
undefined
Speaker:
talked quite a bit about this, (05:42):
undefined
Speaker:
but I became a single mom quite (05:43):
undefined
Speaker:
literally. (05:45):
undefined
Speaker:
Overnight. (05:46):
undefined
Speaker:
I went from planning for my (05:46):
undefined
Speaker:
second baby to being served (05:48):
undefined
Speaker:
divorce papers, no longer living (05:50):
undefined
Speaker:
in the home that I absolutely (05:52):
undefined
Speaker:
loved, having to figure out how (05:53):
undefined
Speaker:
to provide for myself and this (05:54):
undefined
Speaker:
little baby that I had while (05:56):
undefined
Speaker:
learning how to be a mom for the (05:58):
undefined
Speaker:
first time. (05:59):
undefined
Speaker:
And at first blush, I look back (06:00):
undefined
Speaker:
and I'm like, wow, I was (06:02):
undefined
Speaker:
completely unprepared for that (06:03):
undefined
Speaker:
situation. (06:04):
undefined
Speaker:
But when I look closer and what
I want to encourage you to do, (06:05):
undefined
Speaker:
if you haven't done the prompt,
please go do it, because I'm (06:09):
undefined
Speaker:
going somewhere with this. (06:12):
undefined
Speaker:
But what I want to encourage you
to do is look back and see how (06:13):
undefined
Speaker:
God actually had been preparing
you for that situation. (06:16):
undefined
Speaker:
So in my case, I have always (06:20):
undefined
Speaker:
really struggled with female (06:23):
undefined
Speaker:
friendships. (06:25):
undefined
Speaker:
I was primarily just friends
with guys growing up. (06:25):
undefined
Speaker:
I always had a really awkward
dynamic with other women, with (06:28):
undefined
Speaker:
other girls when I was growing
up, and I very much did the (06:33):
undefined
Speaker:
whole like, oh, guys are just
like way easier. (06:35):
undefined
Speaker:
There's so much less drama when (06:38):
undefined
Speaker:
really it's that I did not (06:39):
undefined
Speaker:
understand how female (06:41):
undefined
Speaker:
friendships worked. (06:42):
undefined
Speaker:
And once I started to really (06:44):
undefined
Speaker:
take my faith seriously (06:46):
undefined
Speaker:
throughout that process, a (06:48):
undefined
Speaker:
friend of mine invited me to a (06:50):
undefined
Speaker:
Bible study that she had been (06:51):
undefined
Speaker:
part of. (06:52):
undefined
Speaker:
And literally the moment I
walked through the door that (06:54):
undefined
Speaker:
first night, I got the sense
that something was different. (06:57):
undefined
Speaker:
I felt welcome, I felt
connected, and that group over (07:00):
undefined
Speaker:
time became my circle, my tribe. (07:05):
undefined
Speaker:
They were my people, and that (07:09):
undefined
Speaker:
those relationships I cultivated (07:12):
undefined
Speaker:
and cultivated, for I believe I (07:14):
undefined
Speaker:
was in that group for about (07:16):
undefined
Speaker:
three years before I got (07:17):
undefined
Speaker:
divorced. (07:20):
undefined
Speaker:
And hold on. (07:21):
undefined
Speaker:
Between building that group of (07:22):
undefined
Speaker:
women around me and digging into (07:25):
undefined
Speaker:
my faith and deepening my faith (07:28):
undefined
Speaker:
and relying more and more on (07:30):
undefined
Speaker:
God, the best way I can describe (07:31):
undefined
Speaker:
it is so, you know, when they're (07:33):
undefined
Speaker:
working on historical buildings (07:34):
undefined
Speaker:
and they have to build up these (07:36):
undefined
Speaker:
supports and scaffolds to make (07:37):
undefined
Speaker:
sure that the structure is (07:39):
undefined
Speaker:
supported while they do work on (07:40):
undefined
Speaker:
it. (07:42):
undefined
Speaker:
The best way I can describe what
happened is God built up these (07:43):
undefined
Speaker:
supports in my life so that when
my entire life imploded and (07:46):
undefined
Speaker:
everything I knew crumbled, I
was still left standing. (07:49):
undefined
Speaker:
God did such a gentle, beautiful (07:54):
undefined
Speaker:
job of building a support, (07:56):
undefined
Speaker:
building a community around me (07:59):
undefined
Speaker:
so that when everything I had (08:01):
undefined
Speaker:
ever known pretty much (08:03):
undefined
Speaker:
disintegrated into thin air when (08:04):
undefined
Speaker:
the future I had honestly really (08:06):
undefined
Speaker:
pridefully thought I had secured (08:08):
undefined
Speaker:
for myself. (08:10):
undefined
Speaker:
When that was completely gone
and my life had really no (08:11):
undefined
Speaker:
forward trajectory at that
point, it was all uncertain. (08:15):
undefined
Speaker:
God helped me pick up the
pieces. (08:19):
undefined
Speaker:
I was not completely broken. (08:21):
undefined
Speaker:
It was incredibly difficult. (08:23):
undefined
Speaker:
Yeah, but I had the community. (08:24):
undefined
Speaker:
I had the supports. (08:26):
undefined
Speaker:
I had the resources to be able (08:27):
undefined
Speaker:
to move forward instead of being (08:29):
undefined
Speaker:
completely crushed. (08:31):
undefined
Speaker:
And so journaling about that got
me thinking that I wonder what (08:34):
undefined
Speaker:
Mary had had to overcome. (08:38):
undefined
Speaker:
I wonder what refinement had
happened in her life. (08:39):
undefined
Speaker:
I wonder what fears and beliefs
and thoughts she had about (08:42):
undefined
Speaker:
herself and about her life that
God had to systematically break (08:45):
undefined
Speaker:
down in her in order for this to
be her reaction. (08:49):
undefined
Speaker:
In order for this to be bringing (08:54):
undefined
Speaker:
Jesus into the world, to be (08:56):
undefined
Speaker:
something that she was equipped (08:58):
undefined
Speaker:
to do. (09:00):
undefined
Speaker:
So a thought that I had here was
he is faithful to prepare and (09:01):
undefined
Speaker:
equip us if we allow ourselves
to be prepared and equipped. (09:05):
undefined
Speaker:
I don't ever want to have to
wonder how would this situation (09:08):
undefined
Speaker:
be different if I had listened. (09:11):
undefined
Speaker:
And so, moving forward in my
life, I forever want to be on (09:14):
undefined
Speaker:
the path that God has for me. (09:18):
undefined
Speaker:
Not because it's the easiest (09:20):
undefined
Speaker:
path, not because it's the most (09:21):
undefined
Speaker:
prosperous path. (09:23):
undefined
Speaker:
Not because it's the most fun
path. (09:24):
undefined
Speaker:
Because let's be real, following
Jesus is hard, and a lot of (09:26):
undefined
Speaker:
times it doesn't feel like it
makes sense right now. (09:29):
undefined
Speaker:
But I forever will strive to be
on the path he has for me (09:32):
undefined
Speaker:
because I don't know what's
coming ahead, and I don't ever (09:37):
undefined
Speaker:
want to miss his preparation
because of my own selfishness or (09:41):
undefined
Speaker:
my own pride, I absolutely have. (09:46):
undefined
Speaker:
I spent so much of my life just (09:47):
undefined
Speaker:
feeling like I had all of the (09:51):
undefined
Speaker:
answers. (09:52):
undefined
Speaker:
I grew up in the church. (09:52):
undefined
Speaker:
I grew up going to Christian
school. (09:53):
undefined
Speaker:
I very much felt like I had it
figured out, well, you marry a (09:55):
undefined
Speaker:
nice Christian boy after you go
to a nice Christian college and (09:59):
undefined
Speaker:
then you have a nice Christian
life with some nice Christian (10:01):
undefined
Speaker:
kids going to your nice
Christian church, maybe even (10:04):
undefined
Speaker:
your nice Christian Wednesday
night Bible study. (10:06):
undefined
Speaker:
That's what I thought following
Jesus boiled down to. (10:09):
undefined
Speaker:
And boy was I wrong. (10:12):
undefined
Speaker:
I wasted the vast majority of my
life feeling that way. (10:13):
undefined
Speaker:
And so I am so dedicated to. (10:17):
undefined
Speaker:
And this is an ongoing process. (10:20):
undefined
Speaker:
I am by no means saying, hey,
I've got it figured out. (10:22):
undefined
Speaker:
Follow me because I know what
I'm doing, I don't. (10:24):
undefined
Speaker:
I absolutely don't, but I have
lived the difference. (10:27):
undefined
Speaker:
And so I want to encourage you (10:31):
undefined
Speaker:
to join me in having a renewed (10:32):
undefined
Speaker:
focus on seeking Christ, seeking (10:35):
undefined
Speaker:
his path, seeking his direction (10:37):
undefined
Speaker:
not because of how it's going to (10:40):
undefined
Speaker:
affect our lives now, but (10:41):
undefined
Speaker:
because we do not see the path (10:43):
undefined
Speaker:
ahead. (10:45):
undefined
Speaker:
We do not know how he is (10:45):
undefined
Speaker:
planning to equip us and prepare (10:47):
undefined
Speaker:
us now for things that are (10:48):
undefined
Speaker:
ahead. (10:50):
undefined
Speaker:
And that can be really scary
stuff like, you know, getting (10:51):
undefined
Speaker:
divorced from your high school
sweetheart when you're a brand (10:54):
undefined
Speaker:
new mom and suddenly don't have
your own place to live, or that (10:57):
undefined
Speaker:
can be really beautiful. (11:01):
undefined
Speaker:
God had the most incredible
marriage for me, and it's (11:03):
undefined
Speaker:
because I was doing the work,
working on myself, going to (11:07):
undefined
Speaker:
therapy, growing in my faith,
working on my community, (11:11):
undefined
Speaker:
building into my life that when
the incredible man I get to call (11:13):
undefined
Speaker:
my husband came along. (11:18):
undefined
Speaker:
He had been doing all of those
things as well. (11:19):
undefined
Speaker:
And when God brought us (11:21):
undefined
Speaker:
together, we were ready for each (11:22):
undefined
Speaker:
other. (11:24):
undefined
Speaker:
And things are difficult. (11:25):
undefined
Speaker:
Absolutely. (11:26):
undefined
Speaker:
Life is not perfect or easy by
any stretch of the imagination. (11:27):
undefined
Speaker:
But the marriage that we get to
share, and the camaraderie that (11:31):

Speaker:
we have and the genuine
partnership that we have and the (11:35):
undefined
Speaker:
love that we have is so
incredibly worth it. (11:38):
undefined
Speaker:
So God is preparing and
equipping us, yes, for scary (11:41):
undefined
Speaker:
things that are going to be
really difficult to get through (11:44):
undefined
Speaker:
on our own. (11:47):
undefined
Speaker:
So we better prepare for them
with him, but also so that we're (11:47):
undefined
Speaker:
ready to enjoy the fullness and
the blessing that he has for us. (11:51):
undefined
Speaker:
So little bonus prompt for you
today. (11:55):
undefined
Speaker:
This is actually not in the
workbook. (11:57):
undefined
Speaker:
Maybe I'll go add it to the
workbook, but I want to (11:59):
undefined
Speaker:
encourage you today, sit down
with your journal and ask God to (12:02):
undefined
Speaker:
show you where in your life are
you deviating from his plan? (12:05):
undefined
Speaker:
Not for your own prosperity, not
so that your own life is easier, (12:10):
undefined
Speaker:
but so that you don't miss out
on what he has for you. (12:14):
undefined
Speaker:
Ask him. (12:17):
undefined
Speaker:
He will show you. (12:18):
undefined
Speaker:
James is very clear that when we
seek him with a whole heart, we (12:20):
undefined
Speaker:
will find him, and that he gives
wisdom to those who ask. (12:23):
undefined
Speaker:
So I want to encourage you take
some time today and seek his (12:27):
undefined
Speaker:
face on where you need to fine
tune and find his path. (12:30):
undefined
Speaker:
Okay, that is all I have for
you. (12:35):
undefined
Speaker:
