Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening and
welcome to the Unraid March
Digest.
I'm your host, stephano Partita, and let's talk about all the
things that went down in March.
Unraid 7.1 Beta 1 is nowavailable for download and you
(00:22):
can install it today if youwanted.
But before you run off and goinstall the beta, you should
definitely know about somepotential issues that you might
run into, particularly withthird-party drivers like Nvidia
or Realtek.
Some containers may fail tolaunch or no longer load,
because the drivers may need tobe recompiled in order for the
containers to take advantage ofthose drivers.
(00:44):
You should also know thatbefore you update to the beta,
you should definitely update allyour plugins, including the
Unraid Connect plugin, so thatway you can mitigate as many
potential issues as possible.
So, with all that in mind, whatis included with the Unraid 7.1
Beta 1 release?
With this release, you canexpect some new features like
wireless networking support, vmenhancements, the ability to
(01:08):
import foreign ZFS pools andBattlemage GPU support.
Of all those features listed, there are two that interest me
in particular, the first beingthe ability to import foreign
ZFS pools.
So that's really cool, becauseif you're on TrueNAS and you're
looking to convert over toUnraid, for whatever reason, you
can now import those ZFS pools, making the transition from
(01:29):
TrueNAS to Unraid that much moresimple.
And also, you can have theability to have Battlemage Intel
GPU support now with the6.12.20 Linux kernel, and that's
really cool, because Battlemagelooks like it's going to be a
very impressive GPU, especiallyfor servers.
If you're looking for a budgetgraphics card, this would be
(01:50):
something that you could use Now.
Is it a great alternative toGPUs and all your other options?
Probably not, but it is veryflexible in terms of what you
can do with it, so that's reallygreat to see that that support
is included.
There are some VM enhancementsthat are also particularly
interesting.
We have Verge GL and QXLsupport being added.
With these two enhancements, one of the most interesting is
(02:13):
going to be Verge GL, andeveryone is going to want to
hear this.
Verge GL will give you theability to use your Intel or AMD
graphics card across multipleLinux VMs at the same time.
That's right, you heard me.
You can now use one graphicscard for multiple Linux VMs at
the same time in the beta onerelease.
Now, if you're wondering well, what about Windows?
(02:34):
Well, right now it's notworking.
It may work in the future, butI don't have the details to
explain any of that at this timeand, as far as NVIDIA goes, I
believe it will work with theNUVO drivers and not the NVIDIA
proprietary drivers.
But finally, a win for everyoneon AMD and also a big win for
everyone that's using Intel.
Good job, guys.
(02:55):
With QXL Virtual GPU support, you now have the ability to
support multiple screens andhave adjustable memory
allocation.
As far as user VM templatesgoes, you can save and reuse
custom configurations, which isa great addition.
There's other VM improvementsas well, like CPU pinning is now
optional, whereas it was notbefore, and the primary GPU
(03:17):
passthrough warning now alertsusers that a compatible vBIOS is
required when using GPUpass-through.
Oh my gosh, ladies and gentlemen, I'm just now learning the Beta
2 is actually available.
Well, we're not gonna discussit in this video, because I just
got done telling you everythingyou need to know about the Beta
1, and there's really not thatmuch of a big difference between
Beta 2,.
Just use the Beta 2, since youalready know it's out there and
(03:39):
available.
Don't use beta 1.
All the same stuff stillapplies.
And then some just give me onesecond to clean up over here
because I don't have a secretaryor anybody to help me out.
So, uh, while we wait, though,I can tell you that the
linkstation s1 and n2 have beenreviewed and those videos are
now live on the uncast showitself as well as other outlets
(04:00):
on YouTube.
So definitely be sure to checkthat out, because I believe you
all will be interested inknowing about the Li-Link
Station N2 and S1, as they addsome new features like 10 gig
networking and 2.5 gigabitethernet networking to those
systems, which is a huge plusfor anyone that's pushing some
serious data to their Unraidservers.
(04:20):
A very interesting blog postand video is available on
building the ultimate energyefficient Unraid server and not
to give away all of the thingsfrom this, but it's really cool
to see that a 90 terabyte serveridles around 20 to 25 watts
while also having an N100 basedmotherboard, and there's a whole
bunch of other things in thereas well that make this a very
(04:43):
pleasant video as well as read,so definitely be sure to check
that out if you're allinterested in learning about the
most efficient Unraid serverthat may exist.
One of the newest shows to landon the Uncashed channel is the
Ed and Stefano Unleashed show.
This was previously apre-recorded show between Ed and
myself, but we've nowtransitioned this to be live, so
(05:05):
that means that you guys willhave the chance to participate
in this live show, ask usquestions about self-hosting,
unraid or really anything tech, and we can all laugh and have
some fun along the way.
So mark your calendars, becauseon April 5th of this year,
around 9 am Central Time, weshould go live and we look
forward to seeing all of youthere to interact with us.
