Welcome to a new kind of happy hour!! The Undrunken™ Podcast is hanging out with friends for an hour or so as they share their stories and journey with their relationship with alcohol. Not all of us consider ourselves alcoholics or identify with being sober, hence the term, Undrunken™.
This happy hour is with Jen who found us after meeting Durandy and we had a wide-ranging conversation about her personal experiences with alcohol, her choice not to drink, and how this impacts her life. We explored the societal pressures surrounding drinking, the effects of alcohol on personal relationships, and the potential benefits of not drinking. Jen also shared her experiences with concerts and how avoiding alcohol can enhance the experience.
Jen reflected on her past experiences with alcohol, explaining that she never developed a taste for it and it made her uncomfortable. Jen also shared that they had previously joked about being in recovery to avoid pressure from others, but later realized it was insensitive and reaffirming of her personal choice not to drink, emphasizing that it's her decision and not a struggle.
Jen shared that she and her husband do not drink much if at all, and that they are sure to have open conversations with their son about it. Jen also reflected on their own experiences with alcohol in high school and how they never felt the need to drink. I love how she encouraged others who might feel left out for not drinking to believe in themselves and their unique paths.
Jen shared her love for concerts, and being in the front row to fully immerse themselves in the music. Jen also highlighted the conveniences of not drinking at concerts, like not having to worry about getting lost or spending money on alcohol. She mentioned that their decision to avoid alcohol has both positive and negative impacts on their work, such as keeping her out of certain social circles and potentially hindering her ability to connect with colleagues.
Jen shares how she was affected by a friend's drinking habits and how she now prefers to have a small group of sober friends. Jen shared that they never set out to be a non-drinker and only tried it a few times, but it never really appealed to them. She found resonance with Andy's episode on the podcast, where they described a similar experience. Jen expressed that she hopes her story would connect with others who may have similar experiences and encourages others to reach out if so.
