Speaker 1 (00:01):
Strawut media, food news, celebrities, and more from the world's
number one plant based food and lifestyle magazine.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
It's the veg News Podcast and here's your host, Jasmine Singer. Hi, everyone,
Welcome to another Tuesday and another episode of the veg
News Podcast, brought to you by Mudwater, the perfect morning
coffee alternative. I'm your host, Jasmine Singer, and today I

(00:36):
will be speaking with the hilarious vegan actress and comedian
Tig Nataro, who I absolutely adore. We will also be
checking in with veg News Products Editor Sarah McLaughlin, answering
your questions from the veg News Hotline, and getting an
update from veg News publisher Colleen Holland. But first, it's

(00:56):
time for the headlines of the week. Each week we'll
share our favorite stories. Here are some we can't stop
gabbing about here at vetch News HQ Story number one.
For nearly thirteen years, the Great Food Truck Race has
pitted food truck teams against one another as they race
to outcook and outsell each other for a chance to

(01:19):
win fifty thousand dollars. Last year, the Food Network show
crowned its first plant based winner, and this year vegans
have claimed victory once more. Denver based pop up The
Easy Vegan, claimed victory on season sixteen of The Great
Food Truck Race, prompting host Tyler Florence to declare, it's

(01:39):
a new era of food here in America. Our second
story today, This year, the twenty eighth annual United Nations
Climate Change Conference will go mostly vegan, a move that
is quite frankly long overdue. The conference, commonly referred to
as COP twenty eight, will adopt a menu that is
three quarters plant based. The decision comes after youth constituents

(02:03):
of the United Nations urged COP twenty eight organizers to
forego a meat heavy menu in favor of a more
plant forward, culturally inclusive one. The move connects the dots
between resource intensive animal agriculture and the climate crisis while
modeling sustainable food choices. Our third story today, Heading to

(02:24):
the grocery store, it's the perfect time to stock up
on strawberries. According to a recent study out of San
Diego State University, a daily serving of strawberries can improve
cognitive function and heart health in older adults. Participants who
consumed freeze dried strawberry powder experienced a five percent increase

(02:46):
in cognitive speed and a decrease in systolic blood pressure
of almost four percent. This suggests potential benefits for cognitive
health and hypertension management. Strawberry Fields Forever h huh, our
fourth story, Clueless star and longtime vegan, Alicia Silverstone recently

(03:07):
gave fans a video tour of her Hollywood Hills home,
and it is seriously a true vegan paradise. Avocados, berries, persimmons,
lettuce and herbs grow in the star's garden. Solar panels
line her roof, and a graywater system ensures every last
drop of water accounts. Silverstone has spent nearly thirty years

(03:30):
creating this eco friendly haven that reflects her values and
her aspirations and commitment to the environment. Major goals, if
I do say so, myself and our fifth story today.
More than fourteen hundred US mayors recently came together as
part of the ninety first Annual Conference of Mayors. Together,
the local government officials adopted a resolution supporting a plant

(03:54):
based approach to help address challenges brought forth by chronic diseases,
climate change, and health care costs. New York City Mayor
Eric Adams initiated the resolution as he has actively been
increasing the plant based food options in New York schools, hospitals,
and government agencies Vegan Food for All. And that's all

(04:15):
of our top stories this week. All of our headlines
of the week will be linked to in the show
notes and at VegNews dot com slash podcast. Tig Nataro
is a writer, actress, and stand up comedian known for
her deadpan delivery. She is a breast cancer survivor and
an activist, having delivered stand up shows about both her

(04:37):
diagnosis with the album Live as well as her double
mastectomy without Reconstruction with the special Boyish Girl Interrupted, part
of which she performed topless. We will hear from Tig
right after this. Well, I've been following your career for

(05:02):
quite some time, and when I learned that you were
leaning toward the plant side, I seriously I basically plotted.
So I'd love to know a little bit more about
how your veganism came to be. I hear that Alicia
Silverstone might have had something to do with it.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Well, I mean, she's an old friend of mine and
she's definitely given me some guidance, But I actually went
to it for health reasons, and I had a lot
going on in twenty twelve and I came through all that,
but then I still was experiencing a lot of chronic pain,

(05:37):
and so I did my research and everything kind of
pointed to that, and then I tried it out and
had pretty quick results. I would say, maybe four days
into it, and then it just kind of bled into
other things of educating myself and becoming more aware of

(05:58):
environmental issues and animal rights and I'm going more and
more in the direction beyond just plant based food.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Well, that is really seriously great to hear, and I'm
also excited to hear that you're moving towards some of
the broader issues of why some people choose to be vegan.
And I actually read that when you were a kid
you wanted to be a veterinarian. I saw that you
would kind of like venture off to study raccoons or
to collect the bird feathers. That's so adorable. Is there

(06:30):
a connection between your early childhood love of animals and
your current day veganism.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
I think veganism brought me back in touch with my
genuine love of animals and realizing that society kind of
allowed me to forget the real connection there, and I
was eating animals and abusing animals, and that's kind of
part of what I'm talking about beyond just eating that way.

(06:58):
I mean, I still have some clothing that isn't fully vegan,
but I'm no longer buying clothing that isn't fully vegan,
and so I'm trying to expand beyond just the food.
I'm not the biggest shopper, but I've kind of had

(07:21):
the luxury of different projects that I've worked on. I've
let everybody know that i want my clothing to be vegan,
and so a lot of what I'm buying is stuff
that I'm getting. I really am not a big shopper
at all, but people that have had to shop for me,

(07:42):
it's a different projects and the clothes that I've ended
up being able to keep.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
What about your family? What do they think of your
veganism and are they.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
On board they're also vegan?

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Oh cool? How is it raising vegan kids?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
It's great, it's easy, it makes sense. I'll talk to
my son about how we don't eat animals and they
think it's the most insane conversation I'm trying to have
with them. They're just like, no, we don't eat the animals,
Like they just think it's just utter insanity that I

(08:19):
would be suggesting such a thing.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, totally. I've talked to a few kids who've been
raised vegan, and as weird as it is to become
an adult and then realize that we've had this great
cognitive dissonance and we've been eating animals our whole lives,
I think it would somehow be even weirder to realize
that other people do.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
I'm very curious what's going to happen if they start
showing some sort of interest and not, But I also
try not to get to hung up on that fear
or concern. We also have an a pair that lives
with us from Scotland and he's a vegan triathletes, so

(09:02):
we have quite the vegan household.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Oh wow, wow, that's great, the amount of athletes who
are going vegan. I think that that's seriously one of
the things that will mainstream this quicker than anything else.
Like they're so outspoken about it. I love it, and
things I love also include I know that you're currently
starring in Star Trek Discovery, which, on a personal note,

(09:25):
it's the first time I've ever watched Star Trek, which
my wife is both pleased with and totally annoyed about.
But you are ultimately what got me to watch it,
not her. And on one episode, your character was talking
with Lieutenant Commander Paul Stammetz and when he walks away,
he kind of scolds you and says, now eat your protein,

(09:48):
And all I kept thinking was, well, at least in
the future, vegans won't still be asked where they get
their protein, which kind of begs the question, is all
the food and outer space in the future vegan? And
I know that you made a mention of vegan steak, which,
oh my god, it made me so excited, But what
do you think the protein is?

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Oh my gosh, Ollie, I had thought that much about it.
I like to think that it's all vegan in real life.
I would like to think that the future is all vegan.
I feel like it potentially is going that way. We
just have to hit a massive tipping point.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Has your veganism been an influence in either Star Trek
or in any of the other projects that you've been
able to work on.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
I have other projects that I'm working on where veganism
is not only part of the discussion with the shows
and characters, but it's really crazy the pushback that happens
with networks and studios and producers. People are really not

(11:00):
comfortable with it.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Okay, I might be going out on a limb here,
but I've been vegan as long as I've been gay,
and I'm wondering if there's like some kind of similarity there,
Like producers and whatnot are not really ready for veganism.
But there was definitely a time when the same thing
could be said about gay people in the media, right.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
Yeah, And I feel like that's all gonna head in
the right direction. It just needs a little more time,
But I feel like we're on I feel like we're
on the path. Just the fact that I can be
out on the road and see that chain restaurants are

(11:45):
promoting impossible burger in Middle America really gets me. Hope.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
I remember when you hosted an event by PCRM which
celebrated the passage of California's Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act, and
at the event you stated that veganism is a very
important political move. Can you speak more about that.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Well, I mean, it's just a really basic idea of
everything seems silly if you're not concerned about environmental issues
and veganism, and nothing matters if that's not the root concern,
because if the planet isn't saved, then we're not going

(12:30):
to be around to make our arguments and fight about
stupid political stuff.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
So you have twin boys, as you mentioned, and I
think it would be a really scary place sometimes to
be raising little kids, especially given the implications of what
you just mentioned, right, of climate change, of the current
political system, of so many other things. Can you tell
me what kind of world you want these boys to

(12:57):
inherit or maybe even to create that's different from what
we have today.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Yeah, I would love that this is a time that
their generation looked back at and just laughed, just couldn't
believe the kind of ignorant and stupidity that was going on,
That they had evolved so far beyond where we are

(13:27):
that it would be not truly comical in a way
where you're having a fun laugh about it, but just
really couldn't believe where we were right now. I mean,
I'm remaining hopeful, and I'm also trying to remain active
and positive, and but yeah, I don't want to be

(13:48):
a stagnant hopeful. I'm for sure trying to do my part,
but I I have to for the sake of so
many things, so especially my own children, that that there's
hope for the future.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
So switching gears, what are your favorite vegan places to
visit in la as well as while traveling LA?

Speaker 3 (14:15):
I love I mean, it's kind of the obvious stuff
of crossroads and all that stuff. And then I also
in Toronto. I love Planta. There's so many places. I mean,
it's it's made touring a whole new world for me

(14:37):
after becoming vegan, because it's just I'm excited to be
there to do my try out my new material in
different cities. But I also can't wait to locate the
next vegan place. It's going to blow my mind. My
wife and I eat typically at home almost all of

(15:00):
our meals because our pair, our Scottish vegan triathlete O pair,
also makes food for us. But even before he lived
with us, we still made pretty much all of our
meals at home, and so that's we really enjoy eating

(15:24):
at home. But then it's also nice every now and
then to treat ourselves to one of these amazing restaurants,
especially traveling.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Well, I really appreciate you talking to me. This has
been seriously so incredible. I am a big fan of
your work and I really am so grateful to you
for chatting with me today, and again, thank you so
much for being vegan and for being so vocal about it.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Of course you too.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
Well. My vegan hero is Sarah McLaughlin because she really
is basically the vegan Google, and Sarah's back today to
talk about debuts of vegan products from major brands. Sarah,
welcome back.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
So happy to be back and excited to talk about
all these new innovations.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
These are like huge because I know that you're going
to be talking about the vegan version of non vegan
things that have been a staple in so many of
our lives and in so many of our lunches. But
now we are bringing new meaning to the sentence that

(16:32):
anything you can eat, I can eat vegan. So tell
us about what's going on with these major brands and
what some of the star products are in that in
that realm.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
Yeah, So we've seen an explosion of these major major
food companies adding vegan alternatives or like vegan options for
those popular nostalgic products that we all eat as kids,
I mean, unless you happened to be vegan since birth.
But yeah, there's been a whole explosion of things from
cheese to candy to mac and cheese. And one of

(17:09):
the really big ones that came out just last year
was Baby Bell Cheese, which are the little cheese wheels
wrapped in wax that we used to.

Speaker 5 (17:18):
Have as kids.

Speaker 4 (17:19):
But now they have a vegan alternative one which actually
comes wrapped in green wax wrappers, which is kind of cute. Uh,
And they just added a new flavor to the line actually,
so they originally came out with the mazzilla ones and
now they have a white cheddar. But those were a
very nostalgic and stream moment.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Yeah for me too, And I am older than you,
so even back when I was a kid, we were
eating that and it just like boggles my mind to
think that there is a vegan version for my little
niece who's growing up now. So cool. And what else
is it? I think it's another another cheesy category.

Speaker 4 (17:56):
Yeah, so from the same like cheese food manufacturing company
is Borson Cheese, which is a really popular spreadable cheese
that you can find in the cheese section at like
any major grocery store, but they just added a vegan
version two years ago, and it actually hit Trader Joe's
shelves last year, which is really cool because it's like
making it super accessible and you don't usually find products

(18:20):
that aren't private labeled at Trader Joe's, so it's kind
of cool to be able to get that like nostalgic
cheese spread and it has like garlic and herbs in it,
so it's like something you can almost use as a
cream cheese alternative and put on like a bagel or
something like that, but you can also just eat it
with crackers or an apple yeah, or an.

Speaker 5 (18:38):
Apple yeah, try it.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Try it if you're listening to this, Okay, all right,
moving past cheese. What other big vegan innovations have there
been recently?

Speaker 4 (18:49):
So the one that's been going viral on social media
is the new vegan Reese's Peanut butter cups. And this
is like a super nostalgic moment because they say like
plant based and broad letters on the packaging and they
use oat milk for the milk chocolate part.

Speaker 5 (19:07):
Oat milk is everywhere, but same company.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
They also have Hershey's bars made with oat milk, and
just a very like nostalgic candy that's gonna be available
like everywhere really soon, so in gas stations and seven
eleven's and everything like that, which is cool. People can
get a vegan chocolate treat basically anywhere.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Are these moments where you're like where you just sit
down and you're like, what the heck? Because you've been
doing this is your life, Like you're a professional vegan.
You spend all day every day thinking about veganism, writing
about veganism, taking photos about vegan products, trying new vegan things,
and is this one of those things that like stopped
you in your tracks.

Speaker 5 (19:50):
The Reese's Peanut butter cups definitely.

Speaker 4 (19:52):
I was like very surprised when I saw those on Instagram,
which is funny because I feel like most things don't
surprise me anymore. It seems kind of like a no
brainer that all of these companies are adding vegan options
because obviously it just speaks to how veganism is really
growing as a group of consumers. But the Resa's Peanut

(20:13):
butter cups was definitely a one because that was like
my favorite candy when I was a kid, so being
able to have a vegan alternative which I tried. I
tried them recently and they do really hold up to
the nostalgia.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
So so I haven't had that yet, but I admit
to more than occasionally grabbing a spoon from my silverware
drawer and just like taking a spoonful of peanut butter.
In the freezer is where I keep the vegan chocolate chips,
so I'll just like put them on the peanut butter
on the spoon and like savor that while still standing

(20:47):
in front of the refrigerator. Like it doesn't even make
it to the living room. So clearly I need this
in my life as well. We can't. We can't stay
away from cheese for that long, apparently in the world
of veganism. Tell us what's.

Speaker 5 (21:00):
Next, well, diving back into cheese.

Speaker 4 (21:04):
Kraft actually came out with vegan cheese slices and they
partnered with the vegan company based out of Brazil called
not Coo to do that. And not co makes a
ton of like vegan milks and cheeses and stuff. But
they're really changing the game by partnering with these big
companies to release vegan products.

Speaker 5 (21:21):
So Craft slices.

Speaker 4 (21:24):
I'm like debatable if you could even count those as
actual cheese to begin with, But now there's a vegan
alternative for them. So if you like the craft slices,
there's an option for you that's dairy free.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
Wow. Wow, that's this. I just clicked on the article
that Anna Starsinovskiya wrote about this when it came out
last fall, and clearly this article sort of went viral
because there's like a billion people who clicked on it,
give or take, and I guess people just have craft

(22:00):
marketing is genius, and so the fact that like veganism
can hop on that bandwagon is extra cool.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
And you have.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
A few products coming up that are from equally iconic brands.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
Yeah, I don't think there's any cream cheese more recognizable
than Philadelphia Cream Cheese, and they came out with a
vegan cream cheese option last year, which is really cool.
And yeah, it's like hitting a bunch of bagel shops
and things like that as their dairy free option now.
So it's cool to see such an iconic brand really

(22:37):
lean into veganism and recognize that they should have a
vegan option and.

Speaker 5 (22:41):
It comes packaged.

Speaker 4 (22:42):
I think one of the cool things about these products
is seeing them come in that very like classic nostalgic
packaging with the words vegan on it.

Speaker 5 (22:50):
It's a pretty cool moment.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
I know someone who's like really into the idea of multiverses,
and I just like to imagine that there is a
multiverse where these are the only products that exist. We
basically live in the vegan version of our world. All right, Well,
maybe we could have a few more improvements aside from
just making things vegan, but I'll save that for another
show entirely what's next.

Speaker 4 (23:14):
So next, getting into the world of baking, toll House,
which is famous for their chocolate chip cookies, added two
new dedicated vegan chocolate chips to their baking lines. So
previously there are semi sweet chocolate chips, which are usually
accidentally vegan contained milk, and so now they have vegan
semi sweet chocolate chips and dark chocolate chips for baking.

(23:37):
Just very classic brand and again one of those products
that didn't even really need milk in it to start with.
So it's cool to see that they have a vegan
semi sweet option.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
Now have you heard of the movie A Quiet Girl?
I haven't Okay, it kind of just came out. It's like,
but it's streaming. It's an indie movie. It has like
I think, one hundred percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It's very good.
But there's this one scene in it where this girl,
and yes she is indeed a quiet girl, is at
like a family's farm visiting and it's the only scene

(24:11):
in which she's just talking, talking, talking. She's just so
concerned about why we're milking this cow in this scene
and she's like, well, what are her children gonna drink?
And the her uncle is like, well, there's like a
milk powder, and she's like, well, well, why don't we
just have the powder? Which, yes, that's flawed, but it

(24:33):
was like such a moment of recognition in this like fit.
I was like blown away by it. And then when
I hear you talking about like toll House and Philadelphia
and all of these these companies that have relied on
milk and this horrible exploitation of these animals, It's like, dude,

(24:54):
there are other.

Speaker 4 (24:55):
Ways, totally, and also like hopefully these companies are recognizing
that they never needed the milk and the products to
begin with, like especially chocolate that's not milk chocolate. There's
no reason that it should have milk in it, but.

Speaker 2 (25:11):
I digres, well, you digress. But it's a good transition
to our second to last product, which.

Speaker 4 (25:18):
Is so revisiting the world of vegan candy. Vegan kit
cats have now hit the market. Unfortunately not in the
US yet, but they're all over the UK and they're
in Canada and like a bunch of places, so we're
really hoping that KitKat brings them to the US soon. Again,
just a very popular candy that now has a very

(25:40):
like easily spotted vegan label on it, which is really cool.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Give me a break. Get yeah, thank you, thank you
so much. I'm here all night. Okay, I think you
have one more for us, Sarah, What is it?

Speaker 4 (25:55):
So? The last one going back to Kraft is they
actually have a vegan mac and cheese now, which is
really cool. It comes into the blue classic Kraft Mac
and Cheese box. Unfortunately only available in Australia at the moment,
so we're really hopey and may bring a US I
know we've been commenting on their Instagram and saying like
when is this coming to the US. So again cool

(26:18):
because a lot of these products are very easily appealed
to kids. So kids like to have things that taste
familiar and stuff like that, so it would be really
cool to have a Kraft mac and cheese, so they're
not missing out on any of that, like nostalgic food.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:37):
Well, if you're listening to this and you're in Australia,
my address is twenty five No, okid, I'm not going
to tell you my address, but I will if you
DM me and you want to send that to me.
I'm kidding, No, I'm not.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
Sarah.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
Thank you so much for coming back. I always love
to hear from you. It always fills me with inspiration
and wild, wild, wild hunger. So thank you for keeping
us in the vegan.

Speaker 5 (27:00):
No, of course, hopefully there's even more next time we talk.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
