Veronica Edwards show where we
have fun financial conversationsthat everyone listening can
apply to their personal andprofessional life.
I'm your host, Veronica Edwards, and it is the season year and
wrap up episode for season threeon bizradious, so always want
(00:27):
to thank the V team fordownloading the podcast.
Our goal every season is justanother thousand downloads.
So we were really shooting togo over and beyond and say, hey,
let's hit 4,000 downloadsbefore season four and we hit
that goal already.
So thank you, thank you, thankyou to everybody that has been
(00:48):
supporting the show for the lastthree years and going into
season four, we're going to pushfor over 5,000 downloads, which
we're already less than I think800, I think we're like 700
downloads away.
It's crazy.
So today's guest is the brandambassador of the Veronica
Edwards Show and we've made it atradition that now this young
(01:10):
lady is always going to do theyear-end wrap-up with me because
she is responsible for creatingall the amazing social media
for the show.
She's also helped me this yearintroduce a monthly newsletter
that encompasses the radio show.
My business just me personallycalled Veronica's View.
So if anybody is looking forany type of digital services for
(01:33):
their business marketing wise,or even if they're venturing on
writing a book or performing.
She does it all.
So, without further ado, I'dlike to introduce Drew's mama,
Ms Jylan Barr.
Jhylin (01:50):
Girl, you about to be a
mama, I'm about to be a mama.
Veronica (01:55):
How are you so much
has changed in a year, huh.
A lot happened in a year girl,so typically, when we have folks
on the show that never been, wesay, hey, tell us about you,
how you started your business.
We're dead and all that.
Jylan is not just a friend.
This is home for her.
So I'm more curious for you toshare with folks.
(02:15):
What have you been doing thelast nine months?
The last year you're a yearolder.
Tell us about the world of MsJylan Farr.
The last year you're a yearolder.
Jhylin (02:25):
Tell us about the world
of Ms Jylan Farr.
The last nine months I've justbeen a walking incubator.
You know, which has been anadventure in itself.
Veronica (02:35):
Oh, jylan, keep it
real, girl, for those that are
listening, you're 26 years old, you're about to have your first
baby.
I mean, just four years ago, wewere celebrating you graduating
from college, which within apandemic right.
So, girl, what are you feelinglike?
Are you freaking out?
Are you feeling like, oh mygoodness, oh my goodness.
Jhylin (02:53):
They laugh at me all
the time because I say oh my
gosh, I'm about to have a kid, nobody panic.
Um, they laugh and they're likeum, I think you're the only one
panicking.
So, yes, yes, I am panicking onthe inside, like what?
Veronica (03:06):
in the world.
Jhylin (03:07):
What am I doing?
When did this happen?
Is this a dream?
Veronica (03:11):
Girl.
Jhylin (03:12):
We all are.
Veronica (03:14):
I was going to say
just so you know, regardless, if
you're 26, 36, 56, we're alwayslike what?
I'm not ready, what am I goingto do?
It's everybody's first time.
Jhylin (03:24):
I was just talking with
my eye and I was like I mean,
I'm grown and I'mself-sufficient, but when it was
time to tell my mom I was like15 all over again.
I was terrified.
Veronica (03:37):
Yes, shout out to your
mom, ebony Sullivan, coo of
Cassie Electric, also my co-hostfor small biz chats that we do
almost monthly.
Now it's supposed to bequarterly and your mom had you
when she was 19 years old, soyour mommy is going to be a
young grandma who wants to becalled lovey child.
Jhylin (04:00):
Yes, she's a lovey.
She said all that other stuffis for old ladies child.
Veronica (04:07):
Yes, she's a lovey.
She said all that other stuffis for old ladies.
I love it.
It's the new thing.
I've heard people callthemselves Coco lovey, all the
things.
So I'm excited for you.
So this is right on timebecause V Team, we're going to
be on break, so we'll have bestof shows in the month of August.
This show is going to air, Ithink, the last week of July and
then Jylan will have her bundleof joy.
(04:28):
Hopefully she makes it toSeptember, but I'm taking bets
that she might have a baby inthree weeks.
We've already celebrated Jylanwith a baby shower at the
beginning of July and I'm surethere's going to be more to come
and you deserve all of it.
So definitely keep your feet upand enjoy.
Jylan has some interns, that'sgoing to help.
(04:49):
So we're trying to put out asmuch content as possible so we
can prepare.
So let's talk about seasonthree, girl.
Jhylin (04:57):
Didn't we show up and
show out?
Yo V Team showed up and showout.
I want to applaud team showedup and show out.
I want to applaud yes, yes, wegot all the downloads.
You guys show up and listen andI think that is just so
wonderful, thank you guys.
Veronica (05:13):
Yes, I mean I can't
believe I was telling jylan
before we came on.
Like man, I had to go back andsee what shows we had on season
three, because we start theseason typically in August,
september and then we wrap upusually end of June and in July,
just depends on the productionschedule.
So, season three we actuallyhad our first episode August the
(05:37):
2nd and it was a summerchecklist and it was our CPA
chat.
So, jyla, we lost Michelle thisseason and it was our CPA chat.
Jhylin (05:46):
So, Jyla, we lost
Michelle this season.
We retired our CPA withMichelle.
Cpa chat with Michelle.
Veronica (05:57):
Yes, and that's only
because Michelle actually
retired and Michelle's my secondCPA friend under the age of 60,
not to tell Michelle's business, but Michelle's young and she
retired her whole business.
So she said Veronica, I loveyou, but I'm gonna need a break.
I said you know, what, Michelle, I want to be you when I grow
up.
So I'm just thankful that shewas able to give us two seasons
(06:17):
of, you know, cpa chats.
We had so many great topics andwe're just picking up where
Michelle left off by havingsmall biz hot topics with your
mom, ebony Sullivan, and thosehave been so informative.
We just aired one about KPIskey performance indicators.
My mom was like girl, that'sgood for personal life too, and
(06:43):
it is, you know.
We talked about AI.
That's been a big buzzword, youknow artificial intelligence
and.
But the key with that welearned is for repetitive things
, that you don't necessarilyneed a personality, you don't
need to know any details, butthat's really taking over small
businesses.
So you know, I always like tofind out from you because you're
(07:05):
putting all of the informationtogether and you always put a
great twist on it.
It's always.
I get excited.
Every week.
I'm like I wonder what Jalyn'sgoing to do you know, for this
week's show, so I would love foryou to share, like what were
some of your favorite shows.
What type of shows do youusually like when it comes to
creating social media and what'sbeen some of the biggest things
(07:26):
that you've learned some things.
You know that I'm forcing youto stretch a little bit you know
, in areas that you didn'tnecessarily have experience in,
but I just know what jowell andI'm like, okay, she's never flew
a plane before, but I'm prettysure if I give her enough time
her and the baby can figure itout we'll'll figure it out.
Jhylin (07:45):
We're going to put our
heads together.
So this season my favoriteshows are always just the family
shows.
But I think it's just because Ihave so much to work with and I
can go anywhere with them, sothe family editions are always
my favorite.
(08:06):
But this season I think yourshow with and it was actually a
more recent show with BrandyMills yes, it did numbers.
People really enjoy Brandy, soshout out to Brandy, shout out
to Brandy, who always goes viral.
Veronica (08:27):
She is a friend of
mine and soon to be consulting
client and she's actually in myfinancial tools class currently,
and she just published ajournal called Women you Are
Strong.
Face it to Fix it, and I gaveJialin a copy of this also and
she's just amazing.
So it's one of those easyturners.
(08:49):
It's like less than 60 pages,it's informative, but it also
allows you to write some notesand to hold yourself accountable
.
So I'm all for a good read, butthat I can also come back and
I'm sure I can go back to thisjournal six months from now, a
year from now, and findsomething different that I can
pull out of it.
So love Brandy Mills.
You mentioned family additions.
(09:11):
This season we had the great DrReverend.
I'm going to add a doctor to it, dr Reverend Tameka Milton, my
cousin, who's an amazing singerand has a faith-based business,
and I love that.
She's showing that, yes, youcould be a woman of God, yes,
you can provide religiousservices, but it's still a
(09:34):
business.
Jhylin (09:35):
Right.
Veronica (09:36):
It's still a business,
so I love that.
And then, of course, every yearwe have to have Mommy on.
Jhylin (09:43):
And she always shows up
and shows out honey, mommy
gonna come and do what Mommydoes, okay, honey.
Veronica (09:50):
This year she had a
little speech on faith.
You know at the end of it.
I said okay, and she'scompetitive too, because her
very first show is still well.
It got bumped down because DrSophia Mitchell bumped her from
second place this season tothird place.
But mommy is always like howmany downloads I get?
Oh, okay, I have to hype it upsome more.
(10:11):
So she'll say the timing of thisseason.
There was a lot going on withdeaths in the family and she's
making excuses, retirements, things of that sort.
But you know, number one v teammembers shout out to bobby,
shout out to darcy.
Jhylin (10:27):
Man, she's your number
one man, for sure, so yeah.
Veronica (10:31):
So what was something,
Jylan, that you learned, what
was something that I pushed youacross?
All the things You're doing mynewsletter now I'm trying to
step it up with TikTok.
I still haven't done a video.
I'm scared, but you know all ofthese things you've been
pushing me.
Jhylin (10:57):
But what have been some
things that made you kind of a
little out of your comfort zone, but you're glad that you
experienced it this season.
Just a lot of this video stuffTrying to get us a YouTube going
(11:19):
and our TikTok going, thinkingoutside of the box for just
content ideas, what I thinkpeople would enjoy.
Um, getting me on platforms Ihaven't used before, I say all
the time you and my mom thinkI'm IT girl and I might be you
IT advertising, marketing yourbrick?
Veronica (11:29):
like because I'll keep
up, of course, with Cassie
Electric's social media, becauseI know Jialin's over that and
it's funny because I'll betalking to your mom and she's
like how did you find out aboutthis?
I'm like it's on your website, you know it's on your Facebook.
She's like oh, Jialin justtakes care of it, I'm not even
worried about it.
But you do such a good jobbecause I'm sure people
listening is like oh, anelectric company, that's not
(11:50):
sexy, but you make it cool, LikeI'm always like oh, I wonder
what cool little thing thatthey're going to show on video.
If there's any tips, it'sfamily.
Jhylin (11:59):
It just makes I would
feel like I want to work you
know, at Cassie Electric, we aresuch a energetic family and
everybody around us, everyonehas such a huge personality,
family and everybody around us,everyone has such a huge
personality and I don't want tolike put everyone's business out
there, but it's marketable.
You know what I mean.
So I always tell everybody justbe yourself, show up as you and
(12:21):
be authentic.
People love that, you know.
Veronica (12:25):
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
So, with that being said, Jalyn, we always like to provide, you
know, the listeners with sometips, some jewels, and you're a
self-taught digital mediaconsultant.
That's my title I have for youthis season.
You know, what advice do yougive to other creators starting
their business?
And you know, I always say inthese questions what is
(12:46):
something you wish somebody toldyou at the beginning of this
journey?
Because, yes, you have abackground in business, but your
trade was, you're a baker, youknow, like your food, that's
your passion, but you have, you're so good at so many things
.
So, with being self-taught inthis, what advice would you give
to those listening?
Jhylin (13:08):
Just be confident,
don't don't be so.
I think with me starting out, Iwas so timid to try new things
or do new things or even speakout in the room, because I am
self-taught and I was likethere's so much I need to learn,
um, but if you're creative, you're doing it already.
(13:29):
You know, so don't be, stepoutside of your comfort zone and
do it, but also learn fromeverything, learn from everybody
.
You know, everything, everythingis a is a classroom, everywhere
is a classroom, and myself Ilike to take a lot of the little
free, little courses thatpeople offer or, um, use their
(13:54):
their creative tricks and hacksand things that I learn on canva
.
Um, you don't have to go toschool to be a.
To be a master, you just haveto want to be, so you'll find
those things.
Um, what connects with you?
Join, join groups on Facebookand LinkedIn.
Just don't be afraid to networkand ask questions, because I've
(14:18):
learned so much from people youwouldn't even expect, or people
I don't even know, that I justmay ask a question online and
people are so open to sharingwith you.
So don't be afraid to to justask and put yourself out there.
Veronica (14:33):
Yes, and I'm glad that
you said have confidence,
because having confidencedoesn't mean you don't ask
questions, you know.
Being confident doesn't meanyou know all the answers, it
just means you say it with yourchest.
You know, in recent we werestruggling with something, you
know, trying to post a video onthe newsletter, and John just
was like V, I can't figure thisout.
(14:54):
You know, can you reach out tosomebody?
Can you do that?
And I told her I'm so thankfulthat you stopped and asked,
because when I started my careeras an auditor, we were charging
people by the hour.
So our managers always said ifit takes you more than 15 to 30
minutes, let me know, becausetime is money and we cannot just
have you spinning your wheelsfor an hour because you're too
(15:16):
timid or you're too nervous thatyou're going to look stupid
which you can never look stupidor make somebody, make the
company look bad.
You're going to make them lookbad if you're spending too much
time just trying to figure out.
They know you don't know.
Jhylin (15:28):
Exactly.
Veronica (15:29):
They just want you to
ask the right questions to
figure it out.
So I love that you said haveconfidence and you're not going
to know everything.
And network.
That's one of the tips that I'mhaving in one of my upcoming
newsletters as a CPA tip is youhave to network and you can do
that with just wifi at home.
(15:49):
You know, because there's somany virtual online networking
groups, I just joined a BlackCPA, you know, like Facebook
group.
Then I just joined a CPA group.
You know I wanted to get aflavor of both but ultimately I
miss having other CPAs that Ican bounce.
You know, questions off of ohmy God, are you and the baby
(16:09):
okay?
Are you all right?
Okay?
Jhylin (16:11):
had a little water go
down the wrong way, sorry we're
checking up with anythingjowling does we're like?
Veronica (16:17):
are you and the baby?
Jhylin (16:19):
okay, it's no more just
me, it's no more just me it's
past.
Veronica (16:24):
At this point you got
your last birthday present, your
last exactly exactly.
Jhylin (16:29):
people call me and
they're like can I speak to Drew
?
Veronica (16:32):
I'm like Drew is
unavailable and Jylan's both her
name's with a J and baby Drew'sname is going to be with a J.
I love that.
So, before we go, jylan, whatdo you have in store for the
remainder of the year?
So for those that are listening, they're probably like OK,
jylan is a business owner withthis social media digital
(16:53):
excellence that you do.
You also do that for CassieElectric, your mom, your
grandmother's business and yourfather's business.
So how are you going to balancethis?
What is the rest of 2024looking like for you?
Jhylin (17:08):
Taking it a little slow
the rest of 2024, just trying
to get adapted to motherhood.
I'll still be working, but justa little slower.
I have some new clients linedup for the new year, so I'm
really excited about that.
Veronica (17:25):
What industry?
If you don't mind me asking.
Jhylin (17:28):
Real estate and they
need that.
I'm getting, you know, I'mgetting getting heads all over
the place, so that's reallyexciting.
I'm really excited about that.
Veronica (17:40):
Make sure I go over
rates with you.
You know your rates be too lowSometimes.
Jhylin (17:43):
I'd be telling Shaolin
I'd be giving her raises.
I'm like what's wrong with you?
Veronica (17:48):
Why didn't?
Jhylin (17:48):
you make me pay you
more.
That's part of that confidencething, girl.
I told you I'm like self-taughtso I be doubting myself, but
people are really like feelingwhat I have.
So, yes, we'll get that on thebooks.
I'm going to need someconsulting, but yeah, I'm kind
of just chilling for the rest ofthe year and going to come out
(18:09):
swinging at the top of 2025.
Veronica (18:12):
Yes, because it's
going to be your birthday.
We need that body snatched,honey.
Jhylin (18:15):
Yes, girl, and I know
the baby's going to be healthy.
Veronica (18:19):
That baby's going to
be working, filing papers, doing
social media before she canwalk.
Jhylin (18:25):
They already got her an
assistant electrician shirt.
She coming to work.
She got boots.
Veronica (18:31):
assistant electrician
shirt.
She coming to work.
She got boots.
Jhylin (18:37):
We definitely need and
those listening.
Veronica (18:39):
you can write off your
children as employees, so we
will make sure we get baby Drewworking Well.
Jalyn, thank you so much formaking time.
I know you're starting to getto that point where you're
trying to wrap up things.
You're down to the last stretch, you know, with the pregnancy
and you wear it so well and I'mso proud of you for bringing
this beautiful life into theworld and I'm excited to spoil.
(19:00):
Look, we got that baby sospoiled.
Jhylin (19:02):
Yeah, already right.
Veronica (19:06):
But thank you for
helping me scale up my business.
I was very nervous to outsourcesome of these things.
Now I'm just like, oh, thisdelegation thing is kind of nice
.
Jhylin (19:14):
You know like yes.
Veronica (19:17):
