(00:39):
Hello everyone. Welcome back to The Victim's
Voice. I am your host, Lorelai.
We last went over the indictmentthat indicated the charges
against Matthew farewell and talked about the motion for
detention pending trial. We also talked about the course
of Sandra and Matthew's relationship and what happened
when she found out that she was pregnant.
(01:01):
Today, we're going to start withthe day that Sandra died and go
over everything in detail that was found by the FDI during the
internal investigation. There's a lot more to it than
what the Canton Police Department and the Massachusetts
State Police have set, so let's go ahead and jump right in.
On February 1st, 2021, at 12:19 PM, the day that it is believed
(01:27):
Birchmore was killed, she sent Farewell text messages
indicating that she was going tobe released early that day at
12:35 from her job at the SharonPublic Schools.
Farewell told her that he would not be in the area that day.
Later that afternoon, Birchmore told Farewell that she had
received a baby gift in the mailand that she was not planning to
(01:49):
have a baby shower until late March because of the then going
COVID-19 pandemic. She told Farewell that once she
learned whether they were havinga boy or a girl, she wanted him
to purchase clothes for the child to wear when he or she
came home from the hospital. Investigators reviewed the
(02:09):
surveillance videos from Birchmore's Canton apartment
building on February 1st, 2021. She is seen on the CCTV footage
at approximately 5 O 1:00 PM accepting a DoorDash order and
then again going outside at 5:30PM and returning back inside the
building at 5:33 PM with a snow brush.
(02:33):
That is the last time Sandra is seen on any of the surveillance
footage. Later that evening, at
approximately 9 O 8:00 PM, Farewell sent Birchmore a text
message asking whether he could come by for a second.
Birchmore responded to this message at 9:10 PM, indicating
that when he arrived at her apartment, the door would be
(02:56):
open for him. This message to Farewell at 9:10
PM is the last known message sent from Birchmore's cell
phone. Surveillance video shows
Farewell entering Birchmore's Canton apartment building at
9:14 PM. In the surveillance video,
Farewell is wearing street clothes, a hoodie with the hood
(03:17):
up, and a face mask that is similar to the medical face mask
that many people used during theCOVID-19 pandemic.
Investigators interviewed multiple witnesses who all
indicated that Farewell resistedwearing a mask during the
pandemic. One of these witnesses stated
that Farewell would only wear a mask when on duty and required
(03:39):
by a department policy to do so.So why was he wearing one when
he arrived at Sandra's apartment?
It seems that he might have beenaware of the surveillance
cameras and was trying to conceal his identity.
The video surveillance recordingshows that Farewell left
Birchmore's apartment at 9:43 PM.
(04:00):
Three days later, on February 4th of 2021, Canton police
officers conducted a well-being check at Birchmore's apartment.
1 of Birchmore's Co workers called the police because
Birchmore had failed to show up for work that day.
When officers arrived, they found Birchmore's body seated on
the floor in a reclined positionwith a duffel bag strapped tied
(04:22):
around her neck. That strap was connected to her
closet door knob, the closet that Farewell had inspected
approximately 1 week earlier while visiting Birchmore.
At least one first responder quickly concluded that Birchmore
had been deceased for days. Crime scene photographs show
(04:44):
Birchmore wearing the same clothing that she was wearing
when she is seen on video entering her apartment on
February 1st of 2021 at 5:33 PM.This is consistent with
Birchmore having died later thatsame evening.
According to police reports, when Birchmore's body was found,
her cell phone was on the floor, located approximately 12 inches
(05:08):
from her right hand and six inches from her bent right knee.
The agents reviewed the data on Birchmore's phone.
A log report indicates that the phone was locked down from 9:13
PM on February 1st until the device powered off because of
battery loss on February 3rd. On February 1st, while still
(05:31):
locked, Birchmore's phone recorded a screenshot of a black
screen at 9:18 PM. In other words, after sending a
final text message to Farewell to tell him the door was
unlocked, Birchmore's phone locked and was not unlocked
until after the device was recovered by police.
Her phone was never used again after Farewell visited her
(05:53):
apartment. Health data on Birchmore's phone
indicates that the last movementrecorded by the phone on
February 1st occurred at 9:40 PM.
That was 3 minutes before Farewell was captured on
surveillance video leaving Birchmore's apartment.
Specifically, this data indicates that the mechanism
(06:14):
that Apple uses to record movement registered 8 steps at
approximately 9:40 PM. These recorded steps occurred
while Farewell was still in Birchmore's apartment.
The phone recorded no additionalsteps between 9:40 PM and the
time it was recovered by first responders on February 4th.
(06:36):
As noted above, first respondersultimately found the phone next
to Birchmore's body. Based on a review of the
frequency of Birchmore's phone used over weeks, months, and
years leading up to her death. Her failure to access her phone
is inconsistent with her usual habits when alive and await.
(06:56):
Birchmore's phone used during the hours leading up to her
death on February 1st was reviewed.
The following are some of the items in Birchmore's phone data
from the hours earlier that day.1:25 PM to 1:31 PM.
Eight hours before all signs of life from Sandra stop, she
communicated with a photographerregarding the timeline for
(07:18):
booking a newborn photography shoot. 7:57 PM.
Less than two hours before all signs of life from Sandra stop,
she texted a friend to obtain baby clothes from her. 8:25 PM.
Approximately 1 hour before all signs of life from Sandra's
(07:38):
stop, she performed a Google search for Cubby kids furniture.
The motion states that they alsointerviewed family members who
helped clean Birchmore's apartment in the days following
her death. Some of the things they observed
were also inconsistent with Birchmore deciding to die by
suicide. For example, during their first
(08:00):
visit, they noted that Birchmorehad been in the middle of doing
laundry when she died, with a load of wet clothes in the
washing machine and another loadin the dryer.
Why would someone worry about starting laundry if they were
contemplating taking their life that same day?
Additionally, they observed a homemade sign saying
congratulations, you're going tobe a father.
(08:23):
That sign had an ultrasound photo on it and was sprinkled
with glitter. This shows that Sandra was
excited about the baby. It doesn't show someone who
would want to harm herself and her unborn child.
Additionally, in Birchmore's apartment, family members
observed a new baby stroller that was still in its package.
(08:44):
They also observed homemade and store bought onesies for a baby,
one onesie read. We're going to be parents with a
set of footprints underneath. Birchmore had packages that had
been delivered recently, including clothing and other
supplies for her baby. Birchmore had ordered items
shortly before her death, and packages continued to arrive in
(09:07):
the days following her death. Also, not the actions of someone
who is planning to end everything.
Finally, family members found a necklace that belonged to
Birchmore lying on the floor of her bedroom.
This necklace consisted of a thin gold chain with a pink
Flamingo charm. The family members observed that
(09:30):
the necklaces chain was broken, but not at the class.
There was also a large clump of hair on the chain.
From the agents review of the crime scene photos, he observed
that while the strap was still around Birchmore's neck, the
necklace was broken and hanging from the left side of her neck.
The necklace's charm was on the right side of her abdomen.
(09:51):
Why was this not taken in for evidence?
The Canton police, Stoughton Police, and the Massachusetts
State Police had all of this information from the very
beginning. All the text messages and other
phone data showed no movement after Matthew was at her
apartment. All the information from the
family members surveillance showing Matthew entering and
(10:15):
leaving around the time of her death.
They had everything, yet they still quickly ruled her death of
suicide and closed the case. And just like with the Kieran
Reed case, the FBI had to step in and do Canton and Ms. PS job
for them. When the medical examiner
performed an autopsy on Birchmore's body, they
(10:37):
determined that Birchmore's cause of death was asphyxia by
hanging. Even though the medical
examiner's written autopsy report noted that Birchmore's
hyoid bone, which is AU shaped bone at the front of the neck,
was fractured on the right side and that she suffered from
particular hemorrhages and additionally had a hemorrhage of
(10:57):
her left sternal thyroid muscle, they still ruled that Sanders
manner of death was suicide. The medical examiner's autopsy
report further confirmed that Birchmore was approximately 8 to
10 weeks pregnant at the time ofher death.
The autopsy included toxicology testing.
(11:18):
The results of the toxicology testing was negative for all
substances except for citrulline, which was likely
explained by the antidepressantsBurchmore had been prescribed.
As part of this investigation, the FBI retained Dr. William
Smock as an expert to independently review the crime
(11:39):
scene photos, autopsy photos, and the medical examiner's
autopsy report. Doctor Smock is an Emergency
medical residency and forensic fellowship trained physician
with more than 40 years of experience in the forensic
evaluation of injuries, crime scenes, the forensic evaluation
and reconstruction of wounds including asphyxia related
(12:02):
deaths. He has treated and evaluated
thousands of patients, both fatally and non fatally injured,
who have experienced the psychological consequences of
asphyxia, including strangulation.
Doctor Smock has written, lectured extensively and trained
thousands of law enforcement officers, physicians, nurses,
(12:25):
judges and attorneys on evidencecollection, crime scene
investigation that analysts and reconstruction of wounds, injury
mechanisms, and the medical risks and consequences of
asphyxia. So this guy is definitely an
expert in the field and knows what the hell he's talking
about. Based on his review of the
(12:48):
evidence, Doctor Smock has made several observations and
conclusions that call into question the prior finding that
Birchmore's cause of death was suicide, and instead further
confirmed that Birchmore's causeof death was in fact homicide.
First, Doctor Smock concluded that the fracture of the right
superior horn of Birchmore's hyoid bone is not consistent
(13:13):
with the position in which firstresponders found her, which was
setting a setting hanging is called an incomplete hanging,
meaning only partial body weightis applied to the neck ligature.
Dr. Smock's review of hundreds of cases of hangings in the
forensic medical literature found no reported cases of hyoid
(13:33):
bone fractures in seated women. Fractures of the hyoid bone are
more commonly seen in strangulation assaults and in
hangings with full body weight applied to the ligature, but not
in seated hangings. So basically an incomplete
hanging wouldn't have put enoughpressure on the hyoid bone to
fracture it, which a lot of times the hyoid bone isn't even
(13:57):
fractured in a regular hanging. That's usually how they know if
someone really took their own life or if it was staged. 2nd
Doctor Smock noted that during the autopsy, a pattern imprint
was documented on Birchmore's right upper chest.
The pattern imprint was the consequence of a buckle or
(14:17):
buckles from the ligature strap being forced downward in a Miss
Birchmore's chest. The presence of this pattern
imprint is not consistent with aligature hanging.
Rather, the presence of the pattern is consistent with blunt
force trauma from an assault. When first responders found
Birchmore's body, the buckle responsible for this imprint was
(14:41):
observed just below her right ear.
However, the location of the imprint on her chest is not
consistent with an incomplete ligature hanging. 3rd Doctor
Smock reviewed the autopsy photos that depict Birchmore
with areas of skin missing from the inferior and lateral aspects
of her nose consistent with abrasion.
(15:04):
These types of injuries are commonly seen in cases of
suffocation when the victim moves their nose back and forth
in effort to breathe. 4th DoctorSmock noted that Birchmore was
in the habit of always wearing the chain necklace that had a
Flamingo pendant, the one that the family found in Search
Sanders apartment. It was later determined that the
(15:25):
chain was found broken around Birchmore's neck.
The breaking of Birchmore's chain necklace is consistent
with the struggle. Based on his education,
experience, training, and his review of the materials.
In this case, Doctor Smock determined with a reasonable
degree of medical and scientificcertainty that the cause of Miss
(15:46):
Birchmore's death is asphyxia and that the manner of her death
is homicide. Now we're going to discuss the
inconsistent statements that were made during the interview
with Farewell and the State Police detectives.
On February 6th of 2021, two days after police found
Birchmore's body in her apartment, Massachusetts State
(16:09):
Police detectives interviewed Farewell.
The interview did not occur in an interrogation room at the
Police Department like you wouldassume it would, but occurred in
the parking lot of a Stoughton elementary school.
During this interview, Farewell made several false statements
about his relationship with Birchmore.
(16:31):
Farewell told him officers that he was involved in a sexual
relationship with Sandra, but claimed the relationship only
began in 2020. Based on this investigation,
Farewell's statement to detectives was false.
As described above, Farewell began having sex with Sandra in
(16:52):
2013 and continued to have sex with her up until her death.
Farewell told detectives that hehad only had sex with Sandra two
or three times in the previous year.
This statement was also false based on text messages between
Farewell and Sandra. Farewell had sexual intercourse
(17:12):
with Sandra on at least 10 occasions between January 1st of
2020 and February 1st of 2021. Farewell also told detectives
that he could not have been the father of Sandra's unborn child
because the last time he had intercourse with her was on was
in October of 2020. This statement was also found to
(17:36):
be false. Next is a text message
conversation between Farewell and Birchmore on November 18th
of 2020, which is a month after the last time Farewell says he
had sex with Sandra. In the text exchanged, they
discussed an upcoming sexual encounter.
(17:57):
Farewell. I'm going to try for tonight.
I've been in interviews all day regarding the murder.
Sorry Birchmore. Exciting.
OK, I'm running to the store anddoing something for you.
Then I hope you can come. Farewell.
What are you doing for me Birchmore Lol shaving Birchmore
(18:22):
again? Are you planning on rolling me
over? I need to know what you want if
you come farewell. If you want me to roll you
farewell again. Would you want me to use a
condom if I roll you Birchmore? I don't have any loli.
Never picked any up Birchmore again.
Do you want me to just take whatyou do or try and say no?
(18:45):
I know being told no is your favorite.
Farewell. Say no Birchmore.
OK, Based on all the role-playing that Farewell and
Sandra have done over time, it seems that this dirtbag had a
fascination with taking advantage of young girls,
especially ones who told him no.He likes to be dominant over
(19:08):
them and take what he wants. He is a disgusting piece of
trash. Farewell also told detectives
that Sandra had been sectioned on multiple occasions, which in
law enforcement terms is code for when someone with severe
mental health issues is committed to a hospital for
treatment. So what does this mean?
(19:30):
Does this give him an excuse to take advantage of Sandra?
Or is he trying to make it soundlike Sandra is crazy and
therefore no one should believe anything that she says?
The Stoughton Police Department, the law enforcement agency in
the town where Sandra grew up and lived most of her life
before moving to Canton at the end of 2020, has a record of
(19:51):
Sandra being subjected to this temporary mental health
hospitalization only one time, in May of 2020, according to
police records and information disclosed by person #7.
On that day, Sandra had gotten into a fight with a family
member. Who called the police and
reported that Sandra was going to harm herself.
(20:14):
The police took Sandra to the hospital where she was evaluated
and deemed not at risk for self harm.
She was released a few hours later.
According to person #7, Sandra had stated that she was not
suicidal, just angry at her family member.
Also, minutes after Sanders released from this unfounded
(20:35):
quote UN quote section, Farewelland Sandra engaged in a graphic
sexual conversation. Later, Sandra apologized for
worrying. Farewell and Farewell replied, I
wasn't worried. I knew you were fine.
The Canton Police Department hasno record of Sandra being
(20:57):
subject to temporary mental health hospitalization.
While there is evidence that indicates that Sandra may have
had suicidal ideations on a few occasions between 2016 and 2018,
which Farewell likely knew aboutbecause he was exploiting her
during that time, there wasn't evidence of any suicide
(21:18):
ideations in approximately 3 years leading up to her death.
In fact, all of the witnesses who were interviewed about their
interactions with Sandra in the weeks leading up to her death
suggested that during that period she was excited,
optimistic, and involved in future planning.
Person #7 had a therapy session with Sandra on January 31st of
(21:42):
2021. During that meeting, person #7
screened Sandra for any signs ofdepression or suicidal ideation.
They found none. Person #7 had regular sessions
with Sandra and noted no signs of depression or suicidal
ideation in the months leading up to her death, and had her
(22:04):
next appointment scheduled with Sandra for February 4th of 2021,
the day that her body was found.Additionally, Farewell told
detectives that he had been trying to distance himself from
Sandra. This is inconsistent with
evidence that in Sandra's final days, Farewell asked for a key
(22:27):
to her apartment. In that same conversation, he
told her that he may not be ableto visit her because he was at a
death, but that it was all good because we do them all the time.
Also, in a text message exchangebetween Birchmore and Farewell
from January 29th of 2021, Birchmore expressed joy at
(22:49):
Farewell agreeing to engage in sexual activity with her again.
Following Birchmore's death, theStoughton Police Department
placed Farewell on administrative leave.
Around that time, Farewell met aCo worker, person #4, at a local
bar. During that meeting, Farewell
(23:10):
told person #4 that he had a sexual relationship with Sandra.
However, according to person #4,at no point during that
conversation did Farewell express any sadness, grief, or
remorse about Sandra's death. Farewell did tell person #4 that
he was angry with MSP for looking at him.
(23:33):
At some point during the summer of 2021, person #4 attended a
social gathering with Farewell, during which Farewell
participated in a joke about Sandra being hung on the door.
This guy is sick. Now we're going to go over some
(23:53):
additional evidence relevant to detention, such as that Farewell
had a history of choking Birchmore and he had fantasies
that involved rape. Through this investigation,
agents have identified evidence that Farewell expressed an
interest in violent sex and had a history of choking Sandra.
(24:17):
On more than one occasion, Farewell asked Sandra to perform
his rape and Disease during sex, where Sandra would pretend to be
the victim of Farewell's simulated sexual assaults.
According to text messages that were found, there was indication
that over the course of their relationship, Farewell initiated
the concept of choking Sandra onnumerous occasions in 2020, the
(24:41):
year preceding her death. Text messages reveal that
Farewell told Sandra on at least20 separate occasions that he
would grab her throat, pin her down by her throat, squeeze her
throat, or choke her during sexual activity.
These messages were sent on 20 different dates between January
29th of 2020 and November 13th of 2020, based on a review of
(25:06):
Sandra's journal entries. As early as 2013, when Sandra
was just 16 years old, Farewell introduced the idea of choking
during their sexual encounters and discussions.
One such example of Farewell promising to choke Sandra
occurred on October 14th of 2020, when Farewell told her
(25:27):
that he was going to cover her mouth during sex.
And maybe I'll choke you a little.
In that same conversation, Farewell told Sandra a quote.
I'll grab your throat and say you won't say a word to anyone.
End Quote. On October 15th of 2020,
Farewell told Sandra that duringtheir next sexual encounter, he
(25:49):
was going to, quote, grab her throat and say shut the fuck up
now or I won't pull out. End Quote.
On November 13th of 2020, Farewell and Sandra again
discussed choking. In that conversation, Farewell
told Sandra, quote, maybe I'll hold you down by your throat
(26:09):
while I pound you. End Quote.
He asked her quote UN quote how tight he should squeeze and then
stated that he wanted her to feel like quote Oh my God, this
is really happening and I can't stop it.
End Quote. Sandra's journal entries from
2013 through 2020 detail a continuous and sometimes violent
(26:31):
sexual relationship with Farewell.
Sandra often journaled about Farewell using sex acts to
punish her. According to her journal
entries, Farewell would engage in forceful oral, vaginal, and
anal sex acts to punish her for her mistakes, such as getting
bad grades, having intercourse with other people, and failing
(26:54):
to share her cell phone locationwith him.
Numerous text messages that Farewell sent Sandra, including
some from March of 2019, are consistent with Farewell's
practice of using certain sex acts to punish Farewell or
Sandra for lying or being intimate with someone else.
(27:15):
For example, in a text conversation on March 7th of
2019, Farewell said you would have to take a serious pounding
to make me happy. Birchmore is it for everything.
Farewell no Farewell again. You owe me 3 Farewell again.
(27:36):
I'll give you a break and spreadthem out.
Birchmore, please. Not all the same day, Farewell.
No, I'll give you like a week soyou can fill it and then as soon
as it goes away you'll get it again.
So you fill it for like a whole month.
Birchmore Not going to be a fun month, Farewell.
(27:57):
Not for you. According to the evidence that
the federal agents found on Sanders phone, Farewell was
obsessed with rape fantasies. Text messages between Farewell
and Sandra reveal Farewell's interest in sexual assault.
For example, in one text conversation on November 8th of
(28:18):
2020, Farewell told Sandra that he enjoyed having sex with her.
When Sandra asked what would be perfect for him, Farewell
replied quote, you say no and make me take it full R word.
End Quote. When Sandra indicated that she
was willing to do that, Farewellresponded with quote, doesn't
(28:40):
matter, I'll do whatever I want anyways, End Quote.
During another text message conversation between Farewell
and Sandra, Farewell instructed her to call him quote UN quote
Daddy during sexual encounters and that conversation on October
18th of 2020, Farewell told Sandra that Daddy was going to
(29:03):
engage in anal sex with her. He also indicated that when he
was done, he was going to grab her hair, pull her head back and
tell her to quote keep fucking mouth shut.
Do you understand me? End Quote.
Matthew Farewell also seems to be very obsessive in
controlling. According to these documents,
(29:23):
text messages between Farewell and Sandra include Farewell's
repeated demands that she set her phone's location sharing
settings to allow him to always view her location.
In these text message conversations, Farewell
indicated that Sandra needed to share this information in order
to gain back his trust for her alleged lies and infidelity.
(29:47):
What does he mean infidelity? This man is married with three
kids and had been the whole timehe was having sex with Sandra
but he's going to punish her forher infidelity?
This guy is a sick fuck. On March 11th of 2019, Farewell
(30:09):
asked why Sandra's location was off and why he could no longer
see it. On March 22nd of 2019, Farewell
asked Sandra to reveal her location.
When she responded that she was at 7-11, Farewell told her that
he knew she was in Abington and he asked multiple times why she
(30:31):
would go there when Stoughton has 100 convenience stores.
On April 22nd of 2019, Farewell sent Sandra a text message that
said, quote, I know you're hiding shit, your location is
off again, End Quote. On June 22nd of 2019, Farewell
(30:53):
sent Sandra a text message asking why she turned off her
location data the other day. On July 5th of 2019, Farewell
again reached out to Sandra saying, I see your location is
off again. According to a tax exchange in
July of 2020, Farewell apparently transitioned from
(31:14):
wanting to track Sanders location to prioritizing
secrecy. Here's another tax exchange from
that day, Farewell. You can turn your location back
off if you want. Birchmore.
It wasn't off, that's why I wasn't sure why it wasn't
showing up. Then I just unshared and
reshared it with you. You can have it, it's been a
(31:37):
thing for years lol. Farewell lol OK Birchmore, I
don't care if you know where I am, I'm not doing anything I
shouldn't be. My legs are shaking a shit ton
right now. I'm feeling that tomorrow.
Farewell lol I know that, I justdon't really like any of that
(31:57):
stuff. Big Brother is always watching
Birchmore. I don't understand what you mean
Farewell. I'm just saying iPhones keep
track of way too much stuff. I don't mean anything by it.
The federal agents also found some disturbing images in
Matthew Farewell's iCloud account means indicating his
(32:19):
interest and having intercourse with dead bodies.
Farewell's iCloud data also contains images that reveal his
interest in domestic and sexual violence.
Farewell's iCloud data also includes images that could
reveal his interest in strangulation.
(32:40):
For example, one such image states when she says don't choke
me daddy and you get carried away and now she's dead.
There is also a screenshot of animage of a woman saying that she
could not sleep, followed by a man choking her saying Goodnight
Bitch. After killing Sandra, agents
(33:01):
found evidence of Farewell trying to conceal his crime.
On February 9th of 2021. After giving his personal cell
phone to state police detectives, Farewell used his
Stoughton Police issued cell phone to make and delete to
Google searches. First, Farewell searched for and
(33:22):
deleted. Can deleted imessages be
recovered by Selbright? He then searched for and
deleted. Can you revoke consent?
In Massachusetts? Agents identified text messages
between Farewell and Sandra in which Farewell directed her to
destroy evidence of their sexualrelationship.
(33:44):
On March 11th, 2019, Farewell sent Sandra a text reminding her
to Make sure you clear all this out.
On March 19th of 2019, Farewell sent standard texts about his
desire to use sexual violence and to pretend to rape her.
At the end of this conversation,Farewell sent her a text
(34:07):
indicating that he was going to bed and instructed her to clear
out this text. On June 5th, 2019, Farewell
directed Sandra to make sure alltheir text messages and Facebook
messages had been deleted. There were also text messages
found between Farewell and Sandra in which Farewell
(34:28):
directed her to destroy evidenceregarding the beginning of their
relationship. This would be evidence that
could be used to show Farewell'sefforts to coerce and entice
Sandra to engage in sexual intercourse when she was 15
years old. Farewell wish we had just done
it for real the first time. Birchmore.
(34:49):
I know you do baby. With a sad face.
Farewell. It would have been perfect.
Birchmore. Yes, Birchmore again.
Was it still perfect the first time?
Farewell, Of course it was. Baby birchmore :) farewell I
never thought you'd let me, Birchmore.
(35:12):
I never thought you would. Farewell.
I wanted it so bad. Birchmore So did I.
I knew the day we made eye contact I wanted you to fuck me.
Farewell. You should have told me we could
have fucked so much sooner. Birchmore :) Farewell.
(35:34):
Clear that part out, baby. And that is the end of the
motion. Matthew Farewell has pleaded not
guilty to the charges in the indictment, therefore he is
taking the case to trial and making Sanders family and
friends relive her horrible demise.
(35:56):
On September 3rd, the Governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey
spoke out about Sanders case stating that Sandra and her
family deserved justice. She said, quote, my heart goes
out to Sandra Birchmore, may sherest in peace and her family.
The idea that somebody in a position of power preyed on her,
(36:17):
it disgust me. And the people and the person
who did this need to be held accountable to the fullest
extent of the law. And the Burchmore family
deserves justice. We can't bring Sandra back, but
it's very important there be accountability and that justice
be done. End Quote.
A detention hearing was scheduled for September 12th,
(36:39):
but Farewell requested a quote, Volunteer Voluntary order of
detention without prejudice, EndQuote, which would allow him to
stay in custody while retaining his right to request a detention
hearing at a later date. The filing requested that the
September 12th hearing date be canceled so Farewell's attorney
(37:00):
can work through the details of the case.
The motion was granted and he was then scheduled to appear in
court on October 17th for a status hearing.
Also, the judge approved a motion filed by prosecutors
asking the court to enter a protective order restricting the
use and estimation of information in the case,
(37:21):
including crime scene photos depicting Sanders body autopsy
photos, Sanders phone and laptopextractions, Sandra's medical
records and any police reports identifying witnesses by name.
Prosecutors said they don't wantFarewell to be allowed to review
those materials unless in the presence of his lawyer or other
(37:44):
members of the defense team. Quote, to prevent the
unauthorized decimation or distribution of this protected
information, which the government believes could expose
the victim or witnesses to significant safety and or
privacy risk. End Quote.
(38:05):
Of course, the defense had no objection to this motion.
On October 11th, 2024, a status hearing took place and the
prosecution announced that they have some new DNA evidence that
they are going to introduce in the case that will prove the
guilt of Matthew Farewell. The State will bring an expert
(38:25):
testimony in regards to this DNAevidence.
They also are going to call William Smock to testify as an
expert witness. On October 19th, 2024, Sandra's
cousin Barbara Wright, along with other citizens of Staten
Canton and surrounding towns came together at the five way
(38:46):
intersection near the police station in Town Hall to hold a
standout to demand Justice for Sandra.
Blue signs that read Justice forSandra Birchmore and other
posters reprimanding Massachusetts State and local
police agencies flooded the intersection.
Horns honk and drivers waved as they passed, giving support to
(39:09):
the protesters. While the protest called for
legal justice, there was also a focus on domestic violence.
Sandra's supporters stated that while she was groomed by
Farewell as a child, Sandra alsobelieved the police officer was
her boyfriend. So she was therefore a victim of
domestic violence. Barbara said.
(39:31):
Quote, I want parents to understand just because it's Boy
Scouts, church, a babysitter or a police station, find out where
your kids are going. Don't just send them off into a
program. Find out what it's all about.
And that is all we know at the moment.
(39:51):
As far as I could find, there's been no new court date since
October and no trial date has been set.
So now we wait to see what happens next.
But right now, Matthew Farewell is in jail where he should be.
And hopefully, Sandra will get the justice her and her baby
deserve in the near future. When there are updates to this
(40:13):
story, I will let you know. For photos from this case, jump
on over to the Victim's Voice atFacebook or Instagram and come
back next week where we will dive into a new case.
Until then, stay safe and peace out.
