And I'm your other
co-host, mr Eric Almighty, and
for this edition of CreatorSpotlight, we have finally
completed the mission of gettingand rounding the cast of my
dear friend Nokatan, that we hadthe pleasure of meeting earlier
this year at Brick City AnimeFestival, and our final guest,
phil, is possibly the best forlast.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Man, what a crazy
journey it has been to get all
of these guests on, as we got tosee them a couple times here
this year, and we're very, veryexcited to complete the Infinity
Stone quadrant that we havebeen collecting from this group
of people that we met earlier inthe year at Brick City Anime
Festival.
Please welcome in our guest forthis month's episode, donald
(01:24):
Guzzi.
Donald, so good to see you.
Thank you so much for takingthe time, and how are you doing
here tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Doing well, guys.
Thank you so much for having meon.
And I'm doing pretty good.
You know, just recently cameoff of a nice disconnecting
vacation, so you know I'm comingdown from that.
The weather in Georgia isstarting to cool down a little
bit, so that's nice.
I mean, you know, still in thehigh 80s in the afternoon, but
like the mornings are in thehigh 50s, so that's nice.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
But uh, yeah, man
doing pretty good uh, cooler
weather for anybody that livesin the south like we do.
I walked out, eric, I don'tknow if this happened to you the
other day, heading to work, there was a tiny, tiny chill in
the air.
A little tiny, it didn't.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
It didn't last very
long, but no, and then it's just
going to be wet and hot, whichis just Florida weather, so I
don't know what's going tohappen but I did enjoy it when
it was there.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, fun while it
lasted.
But, donald, we are so excitedto get to speak to you here this
evening and learn about yourstory, your creative journey,
everything in between.
So, before we get started, please, for our audience that
may not be familiar with you oryour work, introduce yourself
and what you do.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
All right.
So, as you said, I'm DonaldGuzzi.
I am a voiceover actor anddirector.
I've been in the business since2014.
So just almost 11 yearsactually September, so it is 11
years as of this month, and youmay know me from the narrator,
(02:51):
from my Dear Friend Nokotan.
I'm also Shinsuke Takasugi anda plethora of other characters
in Hulu's Gintama, and I'm alsocurrently directing the graphic
audio production of StormlightArchive book five, wind and
Truth by Brandon.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Sanderson yeah, we
were talking before we got
started.
Plenty to do, keeping busy, which is nice.
Also good to hear that you wereable to at least get some time
in for yourself here recently.
So, yeah, we are super excitedto hear about you know
everything that you have doneand where you have.
You know how you got where youare now.
So let's kind of just startthere.
(03:27):
We've had a ton of voice actorson and we always want to know,
like, where did you start off?
And I think one of the bestquestions to always ask is did
you start off like a lot ofpeople as a theater kid, or was
your journey a little bitdifferent?
What's kind of your originstory?
Speaker 3 (03:44):
So right off the bat,
no, I was not a theater kid at
all, acting nothing, none ofthat.
So I actually.
So I lived in South Florida forpretty much majority of my life
.
I've only been living here inGeorgia for about three years,
so my journey begins down therein Miami.
So I went to an audio school inMiami called SAE Institute and
(04:06):
I was, you know, I went therefor audio engineering.
So I fully wanted to dive intoaudio engineering.
I wanted to do concerts, likelive sound, and I was very
hell-bent on doing that prettymuch from the start.
I went to the school.
It was a really rough ninemonths.
It was really difficult.
It was a really rough ninemonths.
It was really difficult.
And you know, going throughthere I was fully again fully
(04:29):
wanting to do live sound, readyto go.
I had my plan and everything.
And then we got to thepost-production side and the
project for post-production waswe basically got like a short
clip.
Actually there were twoprojects, excuse me, but it was
basically you take a clip from amovie, show, video game,
something, strip all the soundaway from it, do all the sound,
(04:53):
design all the voices and mix itall down in five one, so in
surround sound, and that waslike the one of the one of our
big projects for post-production.
And in doing that I was like,oh man, this is dope, I want to
do that instead.
So I pivoted pretty hard andwent into that.
(05:14):
I actually got the best inclass for the 5.1, that project
we got best in class.
I have a plaque.
It's downstairs.
So we got that.
And fresh out of school I got ajob as a quality control
engineer at a studio down inMiami called Universal Synergia
and, um, so quality control foranyone who might not know is
(05:37):
basically I would watch dubbedcontent, mark down anything that
was wrong with it.
If it was long, short, flubbed, mispronunciation, like anything
that bothered me, I'd report itback to the director.
They would rerecord it, it'dcome back to me, I'd approve it,
send it out the door.
So that's kind of where Istarted and from there I you
(05:57):
know it was a voiceover studioand they did English, french,
spanish and Portuguese, so theydid a whole bunch of stuff and,
um, while I was there I was like, holy shit, I could, I might be
able to, I don't know, voiceacting like you know, watching
anime and cartoons andeverything.
Growing up.
I'm like I could.
I'm here Like I might be ableto do that.
(06:20):
So for about six months I buggedthe casting director.
I was like, hey man, can yougive me anything?
Like I'll do crowd work, I'lldo anything.
You know, I was like, let mejust get in the booth, let me
try it, and keep in mind I'venever done this before, ever.
And eventually he got sick ofme and he was like, all right,
fine, like if, if I give yousomething, will you just shut
(06:40):
the hell up and leave me alone?
And he, I was like absolutely.
And so he threw me in the boothand it was like, you know, he
did a voice test.
It wasn't like a actual role oranything, yet it was an, it was
an audition.
And, um, you know, he was likehe's like oh wow, you're not as
bad as I thought you'd be.
You know, blunt, blunt as hell.
And I was like, uh, thanks, Iguess.
(07:03):
And he was like all right, I'llstart throwing you some stuff.
And ever since I started slowlyworking into voiceover that way,
while also moving upwards inthe audio engineering.
So through my tenure atUniversal, which was about 10
years or so, I went from qualitycontrol to recording engineer,
(07:23):
to directing recording engineer,to mixing, to mastering
engineer, which, to be fair, anyone in post mastering
engineering in post isn't real.
It's not real.
It's not a real position.
But I digress Masteringengineer into 5.1.
(07:44):
Back to, like, head of qualitycontrol.
Like I've been all over theplace Anything in production
when it comes to a voiceoverstudio, save script control.
Like I've been all over theplace anything in production
when it comes to a voiceoverstudio, save script adaptation.
I've done it and you know so.
I was doing voiceover on theside while working on that.
But, uh, on the voiceover sidewhen, um, we got to a point
where, you know, I was getting alot of small stuff, a lot of
small stuff, just cutting myteeth, getting used to it,
getting used to it.
And, um, a they were castingfor and it was an HBO show.
(08:09):
I don't know where it wentWe've done so much, so many
projects that just disappearinto the ether but it was an HBO
show and the show was actuallyit was called a Magnifica 70.
It was all about the film, filmindustry in the seventies in
Brazil.
It was a really cool show, coolshow, and they were auditioning
for this one character and theyusually sent three options.
Well, the third option wassupposed to come in to record
(08:31):
and he no-call, no-showed, andthey were like shit, what are we
going to do?
We need a third person.
And then they were like screwit, send Donald, they're not
going to pick him.
Well, they did so.
That's how I got my first leadand, of course, can't find it
anywhere and, to be fair, probably better off, because I'm
sure it wasn't that great.
But yeah, and from there, likeit really helped me.
(08:52):
It was like one of those thingswhere it was like you need to
get good really quick or you'renever going to get a lead again.
So you know, it lit a fireunder my ass and ever since it
was like it was just roll afterroll after roll and again it was
all Miami.
So it's like telenovelas thatgo out to uh, uh, africa, like
all the Telemundo shows they airin Africa and English, and like
(09:14):
just a bunch of a bunch ofdifferent like Latin shows that
don't.
Yeah, and from there I had leftin 20, was it 21 or 22?
Somewhere around there it wassomewhere.
It was briefly after COVID.
My timeline is skewed eversince Left there went to another
(09:37):
studio called Enboga, which alot of people PTSD hardcore with
that place.
We can talk about that a littlebit later.
But I worked there for aboutnine months and then my wife got
a really good job and we movedout to Georgia and I came out
here and I was like and she waslike, hey, like don't worry
(09:59):
about getting a job, I'm makingenough right now, try full and
it failed miserably, lost all myclients, like everything died,
all the studios in Miami stoppedcasting me.
It was like like careerimplosion.
It was crazy.
Tried streaming Didn't work, like you know.
And then finally I was like allright, like I'm going to have
(10:20):
to get a job, like you know, like a normie Gross.
I'm going to have to get a job, like you know, like a normie
Gross.
But so I was, you know, applying for stuff and looking
for things.
And I ended up going to DragonCon that year, two years ago now
(10:42):
, and Graphic Audio had a boothat Dragon Con and I had been
recording for Graphic Audio as atalent since COVID era.
So, like you know, I wasfamiliar with them.
I hadn't done a ton of work forthem, but I've worked enough to
know a handful of the directors, and one of the directors I
worked with the most was there.
So I introduced myself blah, blah, blah, whatever, shot the
shit a little bit and then, as Iwas getting ready to leave, I
was like you know what, screw it.
I turned around and I was like, are you guys hiring?
(11:03):
And he was like no, but yes,he's like not yet.
He's like, but you know, sendme your stuff and we'll.
You know, we'll see, we'll seewhat happens, we'll at bare
minimum look at it.
But we are going to be hiringsoon.
And you know, a couple monthslater, february rolls around and
now I am, I am a creativedirector with graphic audio and
(11:26):
that's the uh, that's the verycondensed uh version of that Um,
and of course, somewhere inbetween, you know, no, catan
happened and Gintama, um,handful of other things around
there.
But, like I'll be honest, thosestories aren't incredibly
interesting.
I mean, maybe no Catan is, butI'm sure we'll end up talking
about that a little bit later.
(11:46):
But that's the condensed TLDRversion of my journey.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I'm curious if you're
like me and also Eric to a
degree as well.
Now I do most of the audioediting for the podcast.
Eric has a lot of the video.
Have you gotten to a pointbecause you have an ear for this
and for me, if I listen to apodcast and the audio is off,
the podcast cadence is off orsomething like that I can't do
(12:13):
it, I can't listen to it.
Has that happened with you nowthat you have a trained ear for
stuff and if anything is off, you're like I can't do this, I
got to find something else.
Is it the same for you?
Speaker 3 (12:26):
All the time, all the
time, and it's why I don't
watch a lot of stuff.
Everyone comes to me and islike, oh, have you seen this new
anime?
Have you seen this, whatever?
And I'm like no, because Ican't.
It's so hard to turn the brainoff.
The first three to four yearsof my career was literally
finding mistakes.
It's so hard to come back fromthat.
(12:49):
I always use this instance.
This is the kind of crap that Ipick up on.
I was watching Daredevil, theNetflix Daredevil series.
There's a scene where they'refighting in the bar and all the
shit happens.
And then Luke Cage comes outand he's like y'all better knock
it the hell off or whatever.
And everyone stops.
And then you see on one of thetables, you see this glass
(13:10):
bottle roll off the table, fallon the floor.
You hear the glass break.
The bottle doesn't break, pulled me right the hell out and
immediately I was like God damnit.
Like that's the, like thetiniest stupid shit pulls me out
and like it makes me really.
It makes it really hard toenjoy things, at least at least
(13:34):
with like you know little.
Yeah, it makes it really hardto enjoy things.
So to answer your question yes,100% happens all the time.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
For a lot of people,
them exiting the mcu was like
bad storytelling, but for you itwas just poor sound design.
So that's unfortunate, but no,I, I totally understand now that
that's actually hilarious.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Donald is there.
I feel like you have one thatmight be itching at you, like is
there?
Is there one thing that youlike know of that is either not
very like, well known or is justsomething that bugs you
Whenever you're watching a movie, a show?
Is there a particular thingthat happens that bothers you,
or a particular thing in a filmor a show that genuinely bugs
(14:19):
you?
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Spaceships making
noise in space.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
It's really dumb,
it's really dumb, it's really
dumb, but like Firefly or, yeah, firefly is my favorite TV show
of all time.
You know Breaking Bad closesecond.
So I'm biased, I'm sorry, nothing will ever get above that
, but they did it right.
There ain't no sounds in spaceand I think they're like the
(14:44):
only ones who did it and like Iget it.
You know, you suspend belief, you want.
You know, like when you'reseeing ship combat or whatever,
like obviously you need tosuspend belief a little bit.
But like the times where theyshow the ships, just you know,
floating in space and they'remaking noise, I'm like god damn
it and they're making noise.
(15:05):
I'm like god damn it.
But yeah, that would probablybe my stupid, stupid pet peeve
about stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Yeah, we knew we had
to get it out of the way.
We had to just start off, youknow, getting you angry.
Donald, it's been really coolkind of hearing your journey,
because it's so different from alot of not just the rest of the
no Catan cast but voice actorswe've had in the past, like it's
so different from a lot of notjust the rest of the no Catan
cast but voice actors we've hadin the past, like it's really
interesting.
It's also really admirable, like you putting yourself out
there led to a lot of thoseopportunities.
Sometimes it just takes theleap of faith to be able to do
(15:37):
that and I just think I thinkthat's really really cool.
When it comes to the kind of thejourney you're on now, are
there things that you're likehesitant to do?
Are you kind of, you know, holding back on things now as
work's coming in and asopportunities are coming in?
Are you still in that phasewhere it's hard to say no?
Like what is that balance thatyou're going through now from
(16:00):
you know, that guy that wasgetting those opportunities
throwing himself out there on alimb to what you're doing now?
Like, is that something thatyou continue to try to instill
daily, or have you kind ofreined that back in a little bit
?
Speaker 3 (16:13):
So, as for avoiding
certain things, I won't
necessarily say I like avoid acertain like aspect or certain
projects.
Like there's always going to beprojects that I'll never want
to do, purely because, like youknow, writing's on the wall that
it's probably not going to comeout, or things like that.
Like I try to avoid fanprojects of other things, you
(16:36):
know, and no shade on any ofthat like at all.
It's just not something at youknow, the point I am at in my
career that I really want to do.
I tend to kind of also stayaway from free work only because
I don't have the time.
So a handful of things here andthere, if someone comes up and
(16:57):
it's a really cool thing and I'mlike you know what yeah, bet
I'm in Things like that willcome up.
But honestly, one of the mainthings that I'm starting to
pivot away from actually isdubbing.
Like I've um, you know I had mylike 10 year cycle down in
Miami, right, and like it's veryweird, you can kind of notice
(17:18):
it in in mainstream like animeas well.
Like you know, you'll have, you'll have a new actor right,
they'll pop up and they'll bethe, they'll be the lead in like
everything for like 10 to 12years and then they start to.
They start their down into somemore supporting.
Like they'll get a lead hereand there still they're still
really good but like they starton their like their down, you
(17:39):
know, downward, into notobscurity, but, like you know,
downward into not obscurity, butlike you know they don't get as
many big things anymore butthey don't need to.
You know, it's like they have somuch other stuff that they're
probably doing.
But I had that cycle as welldown in Miami.
It was like, and then I hit myyou know, I came down but I
never went back up, you know.
So, like you know, I moved upto Georgia, lost all my clients
(18:00):
and everything and I'vebasically had to rebuild my
career from, you know, from theground up the past couple of
years and I'm finally startingto get back into a, into a
better position.
Like, um, you know, I still dodubbing.
It's not that I hate it, it'sjust dubbing is notoriously low
pay and it's not always, youknow, and it's some studios are
(18:23):
just not fun to record for orwork with.
And, um, you know, that's justthe the truth of the matter.
Like I would, I would, totallystill I'd, I'd go, you know I
would, I would record for forany of the big anime houses, you
know, of course, if theopportunity arose.
But, like, when it comes to justdubbing in general, I've kind
of started to pivot and I'mstarting to move more into
(18:43):
audiobooks.
So you know, I'm just like Igeneral, I've kind of started to
pivot and I'm starting to movemore into audio books.
So you know, I'm just like.
I'm like I did that.
I want to try and test out someof the other things.
I'm also really trying to breakout into video games.
That's been a challenge and ahalf.
You know nothing, nothing yet,but you just keep trying.
I don't know if that answeredyour question.
I went off on a little bit of atangent, but no it did.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
No, it did Because,
again, I know your journey, you
know getting to this point hasbeen different and I figured,
like your journey now isprobably a little bit different
than you know, rue and Josh andBay, as close-knit of a group as
you guys are, and we'll talkmaybe again a little bit about
that here in a moment.
But, Phil, like a goodtransition to you, like you're
(19:25):
so early into your journey and Iknow that you are looking at
some of these other things, whether it is dubbing something,
whether it is audio books, gaming, so I think that's just
really interesting to kind ofhear how many other
opportunities there are and thatthey're very similar but
they're not always just like aguaranteed lock to get in
because you do one thing.
(19:46):
So, phil, I figured you hadsome, some pretty good insight
and maybe a good question tothrow in.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Yeah, absolutely so,
you know.
Like Donald saying, you knowhe's 11 years into his journey,
I'm barely a year in.
So I am looking to findcreators with free projects that
I can jump on, because I needto make a demo, you know, and I
need to get stuff on the booksand it's very interesting to you
know, as you kind of I lovepeople being able to say, you
(20:12):
know, farther along in theirjourney, they have control over
what they do and do not want towork with.
Like I got chosen for an audiobook pretty early on and then I
realized I'm not going to havethe time to both record this and
edit it and I had to pass on it, you know, and then that.
But that was a really valuablelesson for me to learn.
So that was really really greattoo.
But yeah, it's video.
(20:33):
Actually, I have a funny story.
Just the other day, a game thatI had submitted an audition for
that I wasn't chosen for onCasting Call Club went up on
Steam and was on the front page.
I was like like hey, these guysdidn't pick me.
Everyone go give bad reviews tothis game.
Don't do that, please.
It looks very fun, um, but it'sjust, it's crazy to see, like
(20:54):
that was one of the first timesI ever saw, like one of the
things I auditioned for just outin the ether, you know it's
like oh, I recognize that logo.
So I would really like to know, because obviously you know
everybody, we've talked as faras your castmates, everybody is
remote and it is kind of a Idon't want to say it's a newer
thing, but a lot of people, justlike when it came to stand up
(21:15):
comedy, which I did for a longtime, or even acting, everyone
was like you got to go to NewYork, you got to go to LA,
you're in a hub when it comes toat least what I think of as far
as film, when it comes toAtlanta and also TV.
Have there been any advantagesto being in a larger area when
it comes to an Atlanta, or haveyou not seen really too much of
(21:37):
a difference from you know, obviously you said when you were
in South Florida you weregetting a lot of roles and then
all of a sudden that dried up.
So has there been any anythingadvantageous to being in a
bigger city for people that arethinking about maybe leaving
where they currently are to gosomewhere else?
Speaker 3 (21:51):
For me personally?
No, I thought it would.
But you know, when I, when Ihad first moved up here, and you
know, and I had nothing, like Iwas cold, I was emailing all
the post studios, any ADR places, like anything and everything
and like nothing, no responses,no, nothing.
And you know, of course, nowMarvel's leaving Atlanta.
If you were unaware, they'removing to the UK, which is a
(22:13):
huge hit because, like my nextdoor neighbor works in Transpo
for film, my neighbor, onestraight over, he's a visual
effects person.
He does a lot of the casting andmolding.
He worked on Guardians of theGalaxy Blade, the unreleased
Blade that never came out.
He was like I've started andstopped on that show so many
(22:35):
damn times, but he worked onthat he did.
He built the Fortress ofSolitude for the new Spider-Man,
spider-man, superman, you know.
So, like all these people, youknow they're going to take some
big hits.
But for me personally it hasn'tbeen incredibly advantageous.
But if I was looking to be anon-screen actor or get into like
(22:56):
post for film and movies andstuff like that, I'm sure it
would be a lot easier to getthose jobs here than it would be
anywhere else, you know, andthat's not to say moving
somewhere isn't going to helpyou.
You know, like studios, likeyou know Crunchy and what's the
(23:16):
other one, crunchy and Sentai.
You know it's one of thosethings where you 90, you know,
was it 90 something?
Percent of the actors have tolive there to work there, and
everyone who doesn't are peoplewho have worked there in the
past but now maybe live in LA orsomething like that, and you
know things like that.
But so for me, no, but it has,you know, it has totally helped
(23:38):
other people.
Just, if you do decide to makethat kind of jump, be prepared.
Like don't, don't just do it ona whim.
Be like I'm going to be a voiceactor and I've been doing it
for six months, I'm going tomove to Texas.
Don't do that, because you'regoing to get chewed up and spit
out.
Like, get some stuff under yourbelt before you go and make
those jumps.
Not telling you not to do itTotally, do it if you want to do
(24:00):
it.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
But be like, make
sure you're in a good place
before you make that kind ofjump.
Yeah, I know a lot ofJacksonville based actors will.
They'll go up to Atlanta for aday, they'll film a show,
there'll be an extra in a TVshow and they'll spend like a
couple of days, like a weekend,a week, up there and you know
they'll try and do as much asthey can and they come back.
So, yeah, I can definitely seeit being much different.
When it comes to voiceover, um,not necessarily being, as as
you mentioned, as advantageousin terms of you know, your hub
(24:28):
or wherever that is.
Uh, you know, we've talked toboth bae and rue, who mentioned
they started off with a blanketover their head and a microphone
and a laptop and you know whatyou guys can certainly do that
too.
So, um, yeah, but yeah, eric, just curious, you know, because
I you know that I have plans ofeventually.
You know I'm from Dallas, donald, I went to high school
there, so like I do have kind ofroots there as well.
(24:50):
And but the West Coast calls tome like the Green Goblin mask
man, like I want to go out there.
So bad Talk about weather Idefinitely want to end up in,
not necessarily LA.
I'd like to maybe be in like aSan Diego or like the outskirts,
something like that.
But yeah, you know me, eric, Iam sorry, jacksonville, I'm
trying to bounce.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Yeah, he's, he's
itching, he's itching to leave.
But you know, donald, let's,let's kind of bring it towards.
You know, we've mentioned acouple of your castmates, from
my dear friend no Katan, whichis obviously how we got to meet
you, which was just such a vibe, like again, the four of you
especially really made a markand it was really cool to see
(25:30):
you guys interacting with fans, really exciting to see you guys
interact with each other andjust the whole vibe that you've
had.
So I kind of want to turn it tothat question of, like, your
interactions with your castmatesand the experience you've had
going to conventions.
Like what has that been like toyou?
Again, something that is Iwouldn't say out of the norm
(25:53):
maybe for you, but I'm sure, like I'm sure it was maybe a
culture shock at first.
Like whenever somebody goes totheir first con, I'm always
interested to hear, like whatwas that culture shock for you?
Speaker 3 (26:04):
So yeah, that was it.
It was Brick City.
I get brick and bold mixed upall the time, so it was Brick
City, okay, yeah.
So that was the first time Ihad met Rue, which was awesome,
but actually my first conventionwas this really really small
convention in, I want to say, sarasota, somewhere over on the
(26:29):
west coast of Florida.
It was called Southwest FloridaCon and we were there for
Gintama.
They had hired, they had pulledlike eight of us for Gintama to
go over there and we did.
You know, we did that and it wasterrible.
We were not prepared, we didn'thave prints.
We had headshots with ourcharacters on them and that's
what we were selling.
Like you know, we weren't ready, we didn't know, and Gintama
(26:53):
had been out for like a year ortwo at that point already.
So, like the hype was gone andyou know we didn't think about
it.
It was just one of the guys waslike, hey, why aren't we doing
conventions?
And I was like, yeah, whyaren't we doing like whatever?
And you know, we did that.
But then we got to.
We got to go to Supercon.
So that was super.
(27:14):
That was the Supercon rightafter COVID.
So it was like that first, thatfirst big convention and that
was interesting because it waslike it was super weird because,
you know, you had the plasticpanels in front of you to not,
like you know, touch people andthings like that.
So that was a very weird thingafter going to conventions for
so long as like an attendee anduh, it was really cool.
(27:35):
And then, you know, gettinggetting to do like with nokatan
was the first time I've reallybeen able to like travel for
these conventions, so that'sbeen really, really, really cool
.
I've been, you know, first timeI've really been able to like
travel for these conventions, sothat's been really, really,
really cool.
I've been, you know, visitingplaces I've never been, and
that's what I get out of it, man, like I love meeting the fans
and I love seeing new places andthings like that.
(27:56):
I mean, like, as for CultureShock Rise, like I don't know, I
lost the plot a little bit.
Sorry, that happens a lot.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
No, I mean like it
was an interesting time to do it
.
Like conventions feel likethey're just now finally getting
back to the groove of what theywere and honestly, phil, any
convention that we go to is,like, significantly different
from the other ones.
So like, so, like it's,sometimes it's a culture shock
across the board yeah, okay.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
So so, yeah, like all
the you know, the different
conventions we did, honestly, bold and wasabi con, which I
think honestly I think thosewere like our first two for
nokatan were incredible and Istill think were the best
conventions we did, like it wasawesome, like we had, like we
didn't expect much.
(28:50):
You know, like I had alreadydone a couple of conventions and
like got nothing.
So I was like hey, like I waslike temper expectations, like
it is a big show, but like it'snot the big show.
You know, I was like so temperexpectations, don't expect
whatever.
And it was great, so muchbetter, blew expectations out of
the water.
Those two conventions wereamazing.
(29:11):
And then all the other ones.
They were good, they weren'tbad, but going down to like
because we had did Jacksonvillebasically like twice in like
eight or nine months, which wasa bad mistake, jacksonville
basically like twice in likeeight or nine months, which was
a bad mistake Living well, mainly because, like everyone
who had went to WasabiCon hadyou know it was like nine months
(29:32):
ago they had already seen uswhy are we going to go to the
same city twice in the same year?
Like it's kind of, you know, learning experience for
everything.
But those conventions have beengreat and then we've had others
that have been not amazing and Iwill not I will not name any of
them on where you can tie it tome.
(29:54):
But yeah, like of course youcan't win them all, you know,
like some conventions you justdon't make sales or they treat
you like crap or like anythinglike that and like you know,
it's all, it's all part of it.
It's like, all right, heard notgoing to, just not going to go
that one again, you know.
But yeah, the getting to meetyou guys at at brick and where
you, you guys were at, bold too, right.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
We were, there was
another.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Yes, okay, I was just
.
You know, I'm like again twoB's relatively somewhat close
ish.
But yeah, I hope that answersyour question.
Speaker 1 (30:30):
Yeah, no, no, I think
that that's perfect.
And you know, phil, I thinkthis would be a good pivot.
We typically like to talk somepop culture stuff, but did you
have any other questions fromlike dubbing standpoint,
audiobooks, anything like that, that you kind of wanted to dive
in?
Speaker 2 (30:50):
no, uh.
Well, I'll ask one questionconvention related here in a
moment.
I do want to shout out donald, because multiple times he has,
like live troubleshooted with mevia instagram in terms of
trying to figure out some of myaudio.
So thank you very much for that.
You do not have to do that ortake the time.
So I appreciate you.
As two people who have neverbeen to a Dragon Con and the
(31:10):
first time I ever looked into itI was like this is overwhelming
, we're not going this year,we're going to have to try
another year Do you havesuggestions for newbies who have
never been or experienced aDragon Con?
I did confirm, eric, that I didlearn there are vendors there.
I just never see pictures ofthem, but I just assumed
everybody hung out in the hotellobby because that's the only
pictures I ever see from dragoncon.
(31:31):
So do you have suggestions forsomeone who has never been, for
a couple people who have neverbeen but want to go?
Speaker 3 (31:38):
sure.
So I've only actually I've onlybeen once, that one time I
haven't gone since, not for lackof trying, it's just it like it
doesn't line up time-wise, butso to to set expectations a
little bit, you've been being inflorida.
You've been to megacon, thebiggest, you know, the biggest
con in florida.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
Yeah, it's like four
of those jesus we already
stopped going to megacon becauseit's overwhelming.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
So DragonCon is
incredibly overwhelming but it
is like I will always recommendit Because, like you know,
megacon, with the amount ofpeople they have, like you know,
everyone's shoulder to shoulder, all the aisles are cramped in
and whatever you know.
So something about DragonConand where it is in Atlanta,
(32:24):
right.
So Dragon Con takes place overabout I think it's five hotels,
so it's five buildings.
The dealer's room is four tofive stories of vendors selling
stuff.
The reason you're not findingpictures of the vendor hall is
because no one takes pictures inthe vendor hall, because it's
crazy and like you, just likeyou don't hang out in the vendor
(32:47):
hall like you do at any ofthese other conventions.
The vendor hall is the vendorhall.
If you're going to go hang out, you're going to do it somewhere
else.
Like it's five hotels, likeit's a nonstop party, like that
was something I was not, Iwasn't ready for, but we only
went for one day and it's like Ithink a five-day convention or
something like that, or afour-day convention and they do
the parade and everything likethat.
(33:08):
But one tip I will say is,before you ever go, make sure
you look at the panels and makesure you block out time to see
those panels, because if youdon't, you won't go.
You won't get there.
If you want, you're like, allright, I recommend also taking
(33:28):
one day to do the dealer's room, just one and one of those
things.
It's not like you can go in andout.
If you go in that dealer's room, don't come back out Because
you're going to have to waitthree or four hours to get back
in.
When we went, so we showed up,we got, or four hours to get
back in.
When we went, so we showed up,we got our tickets and
everything and we lined upoutside the dealer hall.
This was like an hour and ahalf before the place opened and
(33:51):
the line wrapped around thebuilding twice.
So it is insane.
But you know, you get into thedealer's room even at full
capacity.
You don't feel likeclaustrophobic, which blew my
mind.
It was crazy, like I was.
Like the aisles are wide, likethe vendors have space, there's
space to move, like it feltreally like I was like for the
(34:15):
amount of people that's here, itdoes not feel as crowded as it
is, which was amazing.
But again, you, you know youlook out the window and you see
the line wrapped around thebuilding eight times of people
just move and the line neverstops moving.
People are always coming in,but it's a lot, and then the
panels are in a completelydifferent building.
(34:35):
So that's why I say, if you wantto do panels, don't do it on a
day where you're going to go tothe dealer's room because you're
not going to leave, you're notgoing to want to leave because
you won't get back in.
The Artist Alley is also in adifferent hotel, the Tabletop
Gaming is in a different hotel.
Like it's crazy, but all thehotels are connected by either
Skybridge or Underground Tunnel, which is pretty dope.
(34:59):
So there's like the MartaStation, which is our like train
.
Our metro train is actuallyunderground and it goes right
underneath where Dragon Con is.
There's like a train stationright there.
So, like what I'm going to donext year or when, the next time
I go is I'm just going to driveto the Marta station, take the
train in and do it like thatCause, cause, I'm sorry, fuck
(35:21):
parking in Atlanta and fuckparking for Dragon Con even more
.
So, like you know, that's it.
I would say you know, make sureyou really have to plan
efficiently to make do with yourtime, like if you're only going
to go for one day.
Don't plan on seeing panels, orI should say, either plan on
doing the panels and other stuffor the dealer's room.
(35:41):
You're probably not going toreally be able to do both, but
there's a lot of really coolstuff to see and it is an
amazing convention.
It's incredible.
I'm very excited to go back.
Hopefully we're going to do itagain next year because it just
happened while I was on vacation, otherwise we would have went.
But yeah, those three tips Ithink are pretty good.
Now, this is also coming fromone person who only went once.
(36:04):
I'm sure DragonCon veterans cantotally, you know, give you
some more better tips about theparties and the you know and
staying safe and things likethat.
But since I wasn't stayingthere, I didn't have that part
of the experience.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
I will say this I
definitely think.
Another part of it for me islisten, I've driven in Los
Angeles and I've driven inAtlanta, and Atlanta is the city
I at least like to drive my carin in the entire country.
I hate it so much.
Every time I drive to Atlantawe usually stop like an hour
before, ahead of time, so I canswitch seats with somebody and
let them drive into the citybecause I hate it.
(36:41):
So, but yeah, eric, we, youknow, we just had to gather all
those tips as much as we canbefore making that Dragon Con
leave, because, yeah, it'ssomething we certainly would
want to commit multiple days to,for sure.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
Oh yeah, and it's,
and it's worth it.
And sorry, just to piggybackoff the traffic thing, so driven
in Atlanta, dc, la and Miami.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
Oh, Miami sucks.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Miami is the worst
one.
I forgot about Miami.
Fight me.
I have people in LA telling meLA's worse.
I have people in Atlantatelling me Atlanta's worse.
I'm like y'all can fuck off.
Miami is the worst, Miami sucks.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Fight me, fight me,
me.
I agree with you.
Miami sucks man.
I uh, maybe you know, maybe thereason we haven't been down to
one of those conventions downthere, super whatever, super con
or whatever they do, the galaxycon shows, yeah, yeah, it
always the miami ones and theatlanta ones always come up.
Speaker 1 (37:36):
And then it should.
We find like a thousand reasonsnot to do it, but I think
dragon cons the one that willprobably bite sooner than later.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
I will say, eric, it
was actually the one year
anniversary, I think, yesterdayof myself, Eric, my sister and
brother-in-law.
We drove down to sunrise to gosee childish Gambino oh, that's
weird, I'm wearing this shirtand we, we did a quick
turnaround, so we went down andcame back and that wasn't too
bad.
But that final stretch andthere's just nothing, it's just
boring is so bad.
(38:05):
We did pretty well, so we leftin the afternoon, early
afternoon, and then we got backthe next morning at like 4 am
and we were all like, oh, we'retoo old for that, ever again,
but totally worth it, great show.
And he also ended up having tocancel the tour after that for
health reasons.
So we at least we got to see itright before that happened,
which was really nice.
It was worth it, but never againnever again.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
Yeah, no, no, we're
not.
Uh, we're not that, uh, thatlimber anymore.
But you know, Donald, before weget into some of the more
casual stuff, you were talking alittle bit in the pre-show
about how like this year hasgone for you and like it's been
a minute since you haven't beenworking on this project.
(38:48):
So tell me a little bit about, like your work with the
Stormlight Archive, Becausethat's like, first of all, huge,
Second of all, super exciting,Like what has been your
experience and like that'ssomething you're still actively
kind of like devoted to.
So give us a little bit ofinsight into that, as much as
you can, of course.
Uh, you know, keeping that inmind.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
Yeah, no, I can, I
can, I can totally talk about it
, cause, uh, so, for anyone notfamiliar, uh, stormlight Archive
is a epic fantasy series, uh,by Brandon Sanderson.
He's I love him personally, buthe's not everyone's cup of tea,
you know.
Like I get it, I'm not going tobe the guy to be like you don't
like Brandon Sanderson, youcan't be a friend of mine, like
(39:31):
no, but it's been.
It's been incredibly rewardingand infuriating, like it's.
So, if you have you ever seen astormlight book out in the wild
, the cover looks familiar not,I don't know about the
stormlight one.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
I mean I've seen
brandon sanderson books out
there, for sure like the way aking's always comes up on like,
uh, like, as an example of likebooks that will just pop up on
my feed and people will talkabout.
Like I read this and it wasamazing, and it's always like
books like that, where thecovers really stand out to me.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
Yeah, so Way of Kings
is the first Stormlight book,
but what I was going to bring upis that they are, they're big
boys.
So Wind and Truth, which isbook five the one I'm working on
is the biggest one, yet it isjust it's like barely under
500,000 words.
I thought I had the book inhere, I don't.
(40:29):
It is huge, like I think it'son your hand, I think it's like
this.
It is massive, and so that'sbeen a big challenge.
So you know, that's why Ishould say that's why it's been,
and so that's been a bigchallenge.
So you know, that's why Ishould say that's why it's been
taking so long.
You know the way the way graphicaudio works is like if a book
is exceptionally long, they'llsplit it up into parts.
(40:51):
And, uh, that used to bebecause of storage restraints,
you know, way back in the day, because they used to release
stuff on CD.
That's how old graphic audio is.
And so it's split into fiveparts, 10 sides per part, which
are basically like 10 sections, and each section is about 10 to
(41:13):
fit usually around 10,000 wordsor so.
So it's like each part is about100,000 words, words or so.
So it's like each part is about100,000 words and it being the
fifth book means a lot ofcreative choices and things like
that had already been done forme.
You know, I am the thirddirector, I think Second or
(41:35):
third.
It's a little convoluted whodid the first couple?
So that's been a hurdle because, you know, having to one
massive cast list.
So I'm like having to gothrough this gigantic old cast
list to try, you know, be likealright, who was this character?
Who plays them, things likethat.
It's like going through massiveamounts of characters trying to
(42:00):
figure out who plays who, figuring out which characters
had their names change halfwaythrough, because sometimes the
characters' names change andthen they'll cast someone else
as a different actor, but it'sstill the same character.
So I'm like, all right, whattimelines do I need to readjust
to make it all make sense andthings like that.
The name pronunciations.
(42:21):
There's also an incrediblydifficult side to this.
There is an entire group ofpeople in this series that speak
to rhythms to convey emotionrather than normal emotion.
We have rhythms that they haveto speak and hum to.
It's really hard.
It's really hard.
So, like those are some big,big challenges and also having
(42:42):
to recast some of the prominentcharacters, like I've had some
like big, like that's the maincomplaint I've seen a lot of
people have with with wind andtruth and some of the other ones
is having to recast uh, maincharacters like the character.
I think one of the maincharacters, adeline, he's been
he's been recast twice.
I think, like a couple of themain characters have all the
character.
(43:02):
I think one of the maincharacters, adolin, he's been
recast twice.
I think, like a couple of themain characters have all been
recast a handful of times.
You know the series has beengoing on for Jesus who knows
like really, really, really long.
Like the first book, the firstgraphic audio version of
Stormlight, came out in I'mwaiting for the page to load
2016.
So almost 10 years this serieshas been going on with graphic
(43:25):
audio.
So like of course, you havesome actors who stop working or
even die, like it's been that.
But like the main challenge hasbeen trying to maintain
continuity based on everythingthat came before me.
That's the hardest part, youknow.
So making sure the charactersstay true to themselves, making
sure all the like you knowcontinuity is there and trying
(43:49):
to decipher these goddamn notesfrom the previous director and
also the previous the main sounddesigner who used to be the
director on like the firstcouple parts.
When he quit graphic audio hetook all his sound effects and
music with him that he madebecause he did a lot of custom
music and sound effects for thething Just took them left and
(44:10):
I'm like, okay, so I don't havethese anymore and I have no
reference.
So I'm like I feel I felt sobad for my designer.
I was like, hey, man, likewe're going to have to recreate
like all of these effects thatwere like have been around since
book one that we no longer have.
And you know things like that, like just trying to make
(44:31):
everything, everything cohesivewith all the books that came
before.
That's been the biggestchallenge.
I'd say, um, but the talent'sbeen great.
The script adaptation has been.
It's been really fun, but again, incredibly frustrating trying
to solve those problems and justbecause the book is so dense,
(44:51):
it just takes a long time.
Like, yeah, I started on it inDecember of last year and I am
just now starting the adaptationprocess on part five, which is
the final part.
So you know, parts one and twoare out, part three will be out
this month at some point and Ithink part four comes out in
like November and I think partfive is going to be January or
(45:13):
something like that.
I'm not entirely sure.
The dates aren't completelyfinal yet.
But yeah, man, it's been a hellof a ride.
Incredibly proud of what we'vedone so far.
I think it sounds amazing andyou know, to be able to work on
a Sanderson property in anofficial capacity has been like
a real dream come true.
As someone who's been aSanderson fan for a pretty long
(45:33):
time, yeah, it's super cool.
Speaker 1 (45:36):
I mean I'm not even
in that world because I can't
read, I can't read, I can't read, so but it's just like really
cool to hear about that.
I'm just overwhelmed of thebook from afar, so I can only
imagine how you're feeling, phil.
Has that ever been like asBrandon Sanderson ever been on
your radar?
Like again, for people who arein it, like he's like the guy,
(46:00):
he's like the guy, right, butfor us, phil, probably something
we'll never dive into.
What is that?
Something that you would do,because, again, you do tend to
read books from time to time.
What would it take for you tojump into one?
Speaker 2 (46:12):
Well, for me, I mean,
it's always an audio book.
So, like, the most recent thing, of course, that I did was
Project Hail Mary, because theykept spoiling the movie and
spoiling the book in the trailer.
So I was like, let me, let melisten to this damn thing.
So, yeah, I never say never, just because that is so it's so
accessible in terms of audiobooks.
Now it's like you know, I'llprobably do one or two a year,
(46:35):
so that would be the way that Iwould definitely go into it.
So you know, love hearing howmuch work goes into it.
I feel kind of bad now forcomplaining about 150,000 words
from the project that I gotselected for earlier.
That was like you, bitch, do it, but no, it was yeah.
But yeah, it's really coolhearing some of the behind the
(46:56):
scenes.
I guess one question I'll askwhen we're talking about
audiobook does listening to anaudiobook count as reading?
Some people have strongopinions about this.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
Fuck them.
Yes, it does.
I don't care.
You're consuming the media, dog.
Because I'm the same way, bro.
I can't read.
It's hard for me to sit downand read a book.
I don't know why I feel likeit's wasting time and it's
wasting time and like it's not.
It's perfectly fine.
But, like, for whatever reason,my internal clock is like don't
do that.
Why don't you just sit andstare at your computer screen
(47:26):
and not do a goddamn thing forthree hours and look at your
steam library?
Speaker 2 (47:29):
I was just gonna say
look, which one of these games
in my steam library am I notgonna play so I totally like
consume the media how you wantto consume the media, you know.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
Like read the
audiobook.
Fuck the haters who cares?
Like you know.
At the end of the day, like ifit really you know if it chaps
their ass that much that youlistened to the audiobook and
didn't read the book.
They need to go touch grass.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
Like you know, people
need to stop letting stupid
little things like take controlof their lives yeah, so, and
also just like we talked aboutearlier in terms of like a bad
audio or anything, or qualitycan ruin a podcast for me or
whatever a great narrator in abook man.
The narrator for project hailmary is ray porter, I believe,
(48:18):
and people like after I, ofcourse.
After I finished, the narratorfor Project Hail Mary is Ray
Porter, I believe, and peoplelike after I, of course.
After I finished the book, Igot a bunch of Instagram reels
about people also that had justfinished the book and everyone
was like you guys got to listento this audio book.
So, like a really greatnarrator can change the entire
thing.
So that's why I also listen toa lot of like autobiography.
So, if it's, if it's read bythe person, like eric, I've
(48:40):
listened to leslie odom juniorsand he reads it.
You know it's him.
Or simu liu, you know.
So it's really cool to hearthem, jojo, like whenever they
read it themselves.
I love that as well.
So but, donald, what do you do?
You know you said you just tooka vacation, so that's great,
but in between work and you know, eric and I can also very much
relate to this, because we'resitting, like you said, we're
(49:02):
sitting at these screens all dayand eventually we have to step
away and do something else.
Do something else on the screen.
What do you do for yourself?
What are those things that younerd out on you?
Just actually, before westarted, started talking about a
collection that you're startingto put together here that, if
you're not watching on theYouTube version of this podcast
is very prominently displayed.
So what do you do for yourself?
To kind of kill some time?
(49:23):
What fandoms are you into andstuff like that.
Speaker 3 (49:26):
So, yeah, I guess we
can start with like on my screen
, I know it like I can't quitesee it, it's a little cut off.
But I've started kind of goingback and collecting some of my
old childhood consoles.
It started with the Dreamcast, then I got a Super Nintendo, an
original Nintendo and a PS1.
You know, I've actually beencollecting that Like I actually
(49:49):
recently just finally beat discone of Final Fantasy IX, so like
I've been slowly workingthrough that.
That was one I never played, like you know.
So I'm like enjoying that.
So retro gaming a little bit.
I also have like a handheld umein odin 2.
So like I do I do some retrogaming and stuff on that as well
.
I also, you know, I, I, uh Iplay mmos too.
(50:12):
Like I've um, I'm currentlyplaying, uh, horizon 11, which
is a final fantasy 11 likeprivate server with like some
added extras.
Like it's like they'rebasically taking the game,
keeping it at the level cap ofthe original game and then like
releasing the old content, butso everything's like horizontal
(50:32):
versus, like having to level upand whatever it is, it's fun to
me.
It's an MMO I never played backin the day.
So like all my friends who areplaying it with me, are like
living vicariously through meredoing all the stuff they've
done when they were kids and I'mlike this is so fucking cool.
And they're like, yeah, it is.
I remember the first, Iremember my first beer, you know
(50:52):
like that kind of thing.
But you know, outside of, youknow gaming and stuff like that.
I also do mountain biking Not somuch recently because, again,
stormlight's been my whole lifepretty much, so I haven't really
I used to be able to take anhour or two in the morning and
go for a ride before work, butnow I can't really do that until
(51:14):
Stormlight's over, just becauseit's just so dense.
But I do mountain biking andthat's my touch.
Grass, you know, go outsidemoments and you know traveling.
When I can, I do write a littlebit.
I don't have anything to like, you know, put out there yet, but
like one of my goals, probablywithin the next five years maybe
(51:38):
, would be to try and producelike my own audio drama or book
or something, something likethat.
I've been really really, reallywanting to to do that recently
and the itch is starting to itchreally bad.
So I'm probably going to starttrying to dive into that a
little bit more.
But um, but yeah, man, mountainbiking, you know general nerd
(52:02):
stuff, like again, I don't watcha lot of stuff, but you know,
old school animes, of course, are still my.
You know my bread and butter.
Like now, to preface, I do notcondone the mangaka's behavior
at all, but Rurouni Kenshin wasmy favorite.
You know like I, no longer Idon't support Watsuki at all,
but Rurouni Kenshin was myfavorite.
You know like I, no longer Idon't support Watsuki at all,
(52:26):
but you know I.
You know, luckily for me, beforethe allegations came out, I had
already pretty much bought theentire manga, the anime series,
everything.
So I've got it all.
I could still enjoy the mediaguilt relatively guilt-free, I
should say.
You know, like I still feel bad, but like you know, I'm like,
look, I bought all these thingsbefore all this shit happened.
So like whatever, and I'm notactively supporting him, like I
(52:46):
haven't watched the new show, Ihaven't, you know, bought
anything like licensed firsthand, like everything's always
secondhand or anything like that.
But Rurouni Kenshin was likethe first anime that really like
locked me in.
You know, outside of dragonball z, which I think it was
everyone's like thing, but likeroni, kenshin was the first one
(53:07):
that I was like whoa this is socool, like it's.
It's.
It's more like realistic, butawesome.
Speaker 1 (53:15):
I don't know it's one
of those, but uh, yeah, I mean,
um, one of the things that youkind of mentioned with the
gaming is is that something likeare you just the classic, like,
like you like playing theclassics, you like the nostalgia
, or is there anything?
Speaker 2 (53:33):
Look at that boxy TV
back there.
Look at that thick boy backthere.
Speaker 1 (53:37):
God damn, I was going
to say you know, you mentioned
you, you mentioned trying tostream it at one point and stuff
like that.
Is there anything in the lastdecade that has scratched that
itch, anywhere close to what youget when you get from playing
those nostalgic games?
Anything in the past decadethat's really caught your eye or
is stand out to you?
Speaker 3 (53:57):
Baldur's Gate 3.
Speaker 1 (53:59):
Definitely Baldur's.
Speaker 3 (54:00):
Gate 3.
Definitely, definitely Baldur'sGate 3.
That thing sucked me in andwould not let me go for a while
and, surprisingly enough, Iactually don't have that many
hours in.
I think I beat it and it wasbetween 70 and 80 hours Because,
to be fair, like in the earlygame, I was like I'm going to do
everything and then by the timeI got to the third act I was
like I just need to finish thisfucking game because my ADD is
(54:20):
going to make me not want toplay it anymore.
So like I need to finish it.
So I kind of like streamlinedthe back end a little bit.
But that game was likeincredible.
And, of course, uh uh, claire, obscure expedition 33 was pretty
uh, gameplay wise, amazing thestory.
I don't want to spoil it foranyone who hasn't played it, but
(54:44):
one of the later acts.
There's a trope in there that Iam not a fan of and it
immediately made me not want tofinish the game.
But that's me.
Personally, I will never notrecommend the game.
It's incredible Gameplay-wise.
They shook up the turn-basedformulas so well.
If y'all haven't tried it orhaven't played it, highly
recommend.
And I mean outside of of that.
(55:06):
Like you know, there's somethings here and there like uh,
hard, honestly hard to say, butlike those are like the two
standouts for me of the past, you know however long that have
really like grabbed me and heldme.
Speaker 1 (55:22):
Yeah, I mean two of
the biggest games that have come
out in recent memory too, andlike Baldur's Gate three, I
played with a couple of friendson my PlayStation.
I was like number one, I'drather play this on a PC, which
I now have, and then number two,I'd rather play it by myself
because nobody likes the choicesI'm making.
So I just would get yelled atconstantly but then also told I
(55:43):
can't be told anything, so Ihave to figure it out on my own.
It was a very weird dynamic atplay, but Claire Obscure is
actually going to be the episodethat drops before this one.
So we I have finished the gameand Phil was at the end of Act
one.
I told him he had to get to theend of the act one for obvious
reasons, but at that point hecould kind of talk about the
(56:03):
game.
Uh, to a specific capacity, andI agree with you, like clear
obscure.
I get why a lot of people kindof tried to push it as, like
game of the year front runner.
It's a great game but story andcharacter wise might be the
weakest elements.
Like I definitely think thecombat is what kept me going for
(56:24):
so long, but there was, I mean, act two is also just long as
fuck.
So I was like I got to, I gotto get through it and I wasn't
too too fond of it.
But who knows, maybe I'll likeit.
They're doing a live actionadaptation so, phil, maybe
that'll be good.
Speaker 3 (56:42):
We'll see, as I want
to point out spoiler.
You know as spoiler free as Ican be, getting to the point
that I think you know what I'mtalking about where you get to
the end of the game and it's notthe end of the game.
I'm not going to tell you wherethat happens, but it's like you
get there and then the thinghappens and I was like oh, oh,
(57:06):
come on.
Like I was like bro, you suckedme right out, like you had me,
because, like I was digging thestory, I loved it, I loved the
mystery.
Like some of the characterswere a little eh, but like
overall, like I was reallydigging the story.
I was like you know, I'm likefight this bitch.
Like I'm going to do this thing, I'm going to do this, whatever
, I'm going to save these people, do this shit.
(57:26):
Like I want to uncover themystery of what the fuck is
going on.
And then I did and I didn'tlike it.
Speaker 1 (57:33):
Yeah, you know, I
would have cool with it just
being, you know the paint restand and renoir, and then you
know stuff like that.
But then, like again, they, they try to do a lot.
I would say that whole thirdact.
I was like, all right, let's,uh, let's, let's wrap this one
up.
You know, let's, let's wrap itup.
But yeah, no, phil, claire, obscure talk is always great.
Speaker 2 (57:54):
Uh, I, I know you
still have to beat the game, but
uh, it'll be very I'm stillvery curious what your reaction
is going to be yeah, I also hadto lower the difficulty because
I suck at parrying and dodging,so I'm like playing just to get
to get the story elementsbecause like, yeah, it's just
not my thing.
Uh, no matter what the game is,I think the only one I
mentioned this when we recordedthe other night, like the only
(58:16):
one I was kind of okay atoutside of, like batman and
spider-man, but that's becausethere's very clear indicators of
when you're supposed to hit thebutton was like ghost of
tsushima and I was like okay atthat.
But otherwise parrying anddodging not my bag man.
So I am excited to to getthrough the game and have my
thoughts in terms of the endingbecause, yeah, you're now that
you're the second person thathas also said that we haven't
(58:38):
talked talked to a whole lot ofpeople, eric, that have finished
the game, so that is veryinteresting to hear from both of
you for sure.
What is?
As somebody who has collectedsome old school consoles, you
also have obviously experiencewith the newer stuff.
I always like to ask thisquestion what's the best video
game controller ever?
Speaker 3 (59:02):
Probably the
DualShock.
Honestly, I think the like Imean the Xbox controller is
great too, honestly, like theway it is, but it's a tie man
between the Xbox controller andthe DualShock.
Yeah, man, I think I'm sittinghere like what's more
(59:23):
comfortable, having the thumb uphere and down here, or both
down here?
Speaker 2 (59:29):
Eric, grab your
controller.
Speaker 3 (59:30):
We all have to.
Speaker 1 (59:31):
I mean they're kind
of the same really.
Speaker 3 (59:34):
I'm just gonna say
Everyone grab their controller.
I'll say the DualShock walked,so the new age Xbox controller
could run, you know, and I meanthe PS5 controller, the
DualSense, whatever the hellthey call it, I don't fucking
know.
They're great too.
But like you know anything withthe two joysticks, because I
(59:55):
mean, like I've been playing, like trying to play the
Dreamcast with one stick.
I'm like, oh my God, trying toplay Sonic Adventure 2, I'm like
Jesus Christ and the Dreamcasthad the memory card in it that
also had a screen on it.
Yeah, dude, I used to play theChao Garden on that shit all the
(01:00:17):
time.
To be fair, that's the onlyreason I beat.
Sonic Adventure 2 was to getthe shit from my chow garden.
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:00:27):
My answer for the
longest time was the 360 slash,
the Xbox controller.
But you just mentioned I lovethe PS5 controller and, eric, I
know you don't really use yoursthat much anymore but as far as,
like the evolution of thePlayStationstation controller, I
feel like the ps5 is wherethey've really really gotten it
down and I've I've expressed notfrustration but like I just a
wish that it was as compatibleon steam as the xbox controller,
(01:00:50):
because I just really loveusing it.
I've been able to connect it tomy pc, but it just sometimes it
just doesn't work right.
So I'm just like I'm just notgoing to deal with this and I'll
just use the xbox one.
So yeah, but I love that ps5controller, man.
I think it's pretty solid yeah,ps5 controller.
Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
I mean especially
when with astrobot, um and
astro's playroom like that, thatlike really maximized the
controller no one else ever usedthose features.
Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
Features again I just
don't.
Speaker 1 (01:01:14):
I'll never understand
why you can blow into your
controller and that's not justlike a mechanic in like multiple
games or franchises.
I don't, I don't understand itI'll never hear it.
Speaker 2 (01:01:25):
Sony eric wants to
blow into his controller.
Make it happen, guys.
Speaker 1 (01:01:27):
Make it happen, make
it happen.
But uh, yeah, no, I mean, youknow a little bit of talks on
some of the some of the thingsthat you're into, uh, donald.
So what is it gonna take for usfor uh to get you to watch
k-pop demon hunters, what is uh,what is that gonna take?
Speaker 3 (01:01:46):
I'm waiting for my
wife to come back from
deployment.
Hell, yeah, because I told herI was like.
I was like I was like nicole, when you come back home, can we
watch k-pop demon hunters?
Because we also.
We don't watch a lot of thingstogether because she doesn't,
she likes to just sit and read.
She doesn't like to watch a lotof things.
So I kind of have to force heror coerce her a little bit.
(01:02:06):
But I was like k-pop demonhunters, it's, you know, it's,
it's k-pop, the music's good andwhatever.
And I'm like I want to watch it, but like I'd like to watch it
with you.
So I'm like I'm waiting for herto come back from deployment,
which is two weeks, two weeksgive or take, something like
that.
So yeah, my wife travels forwork, fyi, but yeah, I'm waiting
(01:02:26):
for her to come home.
So you don't got to try toohard, I want to watch it.
And if we don't watch it whileshe's home and she leaves again
on another deployment, I'm justgoing to watch it by myself.
Speaker 1 (01:02:36):
Okay, no, I'm just
making sure.
Just making sure, Is thereanything that you've been
wanting to check out that's inyour queue, like anything that
you've been like just kind ofpushing off to the side, whether
it is an anime, maybe like anewer series or a show or a
movie, anything that's kind ofsitting in your queue alongside
K-pop Demon Hunters right now?
Speaker 3 (01:03:06):
right now, so in my
queue the bear was kind of up
there.
I did start watching that, though, so that's not quite in
my queue anymore.
I haven't finished it yet, butthat, bro, arguably one of the
most stressful shows I've everwatched in my life, oh for sure,
yeah, phil couldn't keepwatching it.
Speaker 1 (01:03:15):
he's like this is
just what you guys dealt with in
the restaurant industry.
I'm like it's pretty accurateNot going to lie to you.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Yeah, like you know,
I live with bartenders, so like
I'm like, yeah, I'm like this is, it's so visceral, oh my God.
But yeah, so the bear was oneof them Psychopaths.
I want to go back and actuallyfinish Psycho Pass, because that
series was so dope.
I was like this is the new ageGhost in the Shell and I'm so
(01:03:46):
here for it, like I am ready, and I was enjoying the hell out
of it.
But then I kind of fell off.
What else?
Like I know there's stuff andof course, as soon as you ask
the question, it just Out, itgoes.
But yeah, that's right now inmy, in my queue.
Oh the, the League of Legendsshow god damn it, oh arcane yes,
(01:04:08):
arcane, thank you.
I think I I had I'm like almostdone with season one and like
yeah.
So, like you know, I I dothings in in like spurts like
I'll be like hell, yeah, withthe bear.
I was like I watched season onein a couple days and then I
just stopped watching it.
I got halfway through seasontwo, I should say, and then just
(01:04:30):
stopped Stupid crap like that.
But I mean, yeah, those areprobably the most recent things
that I've wanted to try to diveback into a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
Yeah, and Arcane's
really easy to kind of do that
because it has those threeepisode batches that it was
released in.
So it kind of is a nice neatlittle bow after a couple
episodes.
Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
I think that's why I
rewatch it so much is just
because of that specifically.
You can get through threeepisodes and you're done with a
mini arc and then they move onto the next one.
So season two needed a littlebit more as far as that.
So I'll be interested to hearwhat you think once you get to
season two.
But it's still still very, verygood.
Shout out to them they just wonanother Emmy, so yeah, but the
bear, like Eric said, I couldn'tget into the bear like I wanted
(01:05:15):
to, but it does have some ofthe funniest moments of any show
I've ever seen.
And also Forks is one of thebest episodes of television
that's ever been created.
That's the episode title, right, eric Forks.
Speaker 1 (01:05:25):
I believe.
So yeah, and that's season two.
Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
Yes.
So whenever it comes up on myalgorithm like a clip from that,
I'm like, yep, I'm going to sithere and watch this, this is
great.
But yeah, I totally get thatthere's just so much to get
through and I'll start something.
And then I'll be like, oh, Ialso want to start this and, you
know, maybe I also want tolisten to an audio book or play
a video game, and it just justthere's just not enough time,
man.
Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
Not enough time, yeah
, not enough time in the day.
I'm excited to get into thisand I am going to be leading
this, phil, for the first time,so you might have to walk me
through some of this.
I'm going to do my best, but weare going to play a game of
(01:06:10):
jeopardy, so you guys should beable to see, lord my screen a
little pop culture jeopardy.
All right, not trademarked, not, so feel free.
If you got to use the qr codeor you could go to
playfactilecom join, you'regoing to put in the code and
then, uh, you're going to selectwhat you want to represent your
(01:06:33):
team, and we've got severaldifferent categories.
I really tried to go broad withthis one, so we are gonna see.
We're gonna see how this goes.
These are usually pittedagainst phil, uh, but, phil, I
will tell you there are some inthere specifically for you okay.
Speaker 2 (01:06:50):
Okay, it took me to
the sign-in screen instead, I
think probably because I usuallysign in, but let me.
Speaker 1 (01:06:57):
Usually sign in.
We got Onion, I get to see allthe characters.
Speaker 2 (01:07:03):
Actually, we did play
this at work, eric, the other
day, and I had to tell theinstructor how to use it
properly.
I was like hey, you can just dothis, just so you know.
Nice, obviously, I'm to tellthe instructor how to like use
it properly.
I was like hey, uh, you canjust do this, just so you don't
nice obviously I'm goingdinosaur.
Speaker 1 (01:07:20):
Why is a mosasaur on
here?
More sources and a dinosaur.
It's an aquatic.
Okay, never mind, I will gowith my favorite you're getting.
You're getting a little tooinvested.
Speaker 2 (01:07:23):
Okay, we'll go with
my favorite dinosaurs.
Speaker 1 (01:07:25):
Okay, all right, cool
, cool.
So we got onion and spinosaurusa tale a battle as old as time
I'm going to be, terrible atthis, oh man.
All right, let's go ahead andbegin our game here.
So you guys will have yourbuzzer on your phones.
You can buzz in.
Once the question is being read, it will light up after a few
(01:07:46):
seconds.
First one to buzz in gets thechance at the actual thing here.
Also, phil, I don't know if youknew this, because you usually
have people send in the finalfact tile answer.
It looks like they can enter it, so I'm going to try to do that
feature Cool.
So we're going to see if thatactually works.
But, yeah, let's go ahead andjump into the category.
(01:08:09):
So you guys are going to seesix categories here Blockbusters
and bombs, video game iconsname this meme 90s, kid, 2020s
moments and pop culture,geography.
So, donald, as our guest, youget to select the board first.
Where would you like to go andhow much?
Speaker 3 (01:08:32):
Huh, I'm going gonna
be an asshole.
Let's do 90s kid for a thousandhell yeah, I'm gonna miss it I
know I'm gonna.
I know it's gonna be somethingso stupid.
I'm gonna know I'm gonna missit, but screw it, let's do it,
I'm gonna lose.
Speaker 1 (01:08:44):
I'm gonna lose right
off the bat.
All right, 90s kids, or ahundred, a thousand.
What 90s kids show aired on foxkids, where a band of kids
transform into comic book heroesafter a ghost grants them
powers battling comic villainadversaries you know, fantastic,
because, uh, I was the one, Iwas the one kid who didn't watch
(01:09:07):
fox fox kids.
Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
I did cartoon network
hours, this.
Speaker 1 (01:09:12):
This one is going to
be interesting.
No buzzers.
Speaker 2 (01:09:18):
Not going to risk a
thousand dollars.
Are you out of your mind?
Speaker 3 (01:09:21):
Yeah, you got Damn.
Speaker 1 (01:09:26):
Was I the only person
who watched Big Bad Beetle Boys
?
Speaker 2 (01:09:30):
Oh my god, you're
right Son of a bitch, I had the
toys man, I had the toys Dude.
Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
Beetleborgs was my
shit Beetleborgs was my shit.
Speaker 3 (01:09:42):
So I was more of a.
I knew of the Beetleborgs Causemy neighbor was a Beetleborgs
kid and I was a Power Rangerskid.
So, like, yeah, okay, like Iknow of the Beetleborgs, I guess
I never actually paid attentionto the show.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
Yeah, no, beetleborg
slaps Donald.
That's okay, you guys areevened up, you got equal
disappointment Top and thebottom, so that's good.
And nobody said the negatives.
Where would you like to go andhow much?
Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
Oh, me again.
Yeah, because nobody got it, soit's still your board.
Speaker 3 (01:10:13):
Okay, it's still your
board.
Let's do name this meme for 400.
Speaker 1 (01:10:18):
Okay, name this meme
400.
Speaker 2 (01:10:27):
This meme holds a
single caption from one of the
most famous movies of all timeto describe what people can't do
.
Speaker 1 (01:10:33):
Single caption from
one of the most famous movies of
all time to describe whatpeople can't do.
Speaker 2 (01:10:37):
It's okay, you got
about 10 seconds.
Oh my God, single caption forone of the most famous movies of
all time.
Speaker 3 (01:10:41):
It's going to be dumb
.
It's going to be so dumb.
Speaker 1 (01:10:43):
You guys are going to
get mad, we're going to get mad
.
Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
I know we're going to
get mad.
Speaker 1 (01:10:46):
This is an all-timer.
All right, let's go ahead andreveal.
Reveal our answer.
Speaker 3 (01:10:49):
Oh, I buzzed.
Whoops, I don't know the answer.
I went to go put my phone downand I hit it.
I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (01:10:56):
That's okay, that's
okay, I'm going to skip it
anyway.
I'm not going to deduct you.
All right?
The answer.
Oh son of a bitch.
Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
From Lord of the
Rings.
If you would have put simple,if you weren't.
Speaker 1 (01:11:19):
One doesn't.
Yeah, that would have givenaway though.
Okay, yeah, exactly.
Yeah, that's what it was.
It was.
It was difficult roll tonight.
Well guys, uh, we shall see ifI created the hardest game of
culture jeffrey to date.
It is my first go at this so,phil, I now do not envy you.
Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
Uh, donald, it's
still your board, though you
also did one more row that Itypically do.
I only usually do four.
Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
I didn't know I could
remove a row.
I know that now we're doing itlive.
We're doing it live.
Speaker 3 (01:11:39):
Let's do it, we're
doing it live, let's do.
Video game icons for 200.
Speaker 1 (01:11:45):
Video game icons 200.
The protagonist of this classicPlayStation game is known for
his spins collecting apples andcrashing crates.
Speaker 2 (01:11:53):
Damn, how'd you get
that before me?
Speaker 1 (01:11:57):
Donald, what is your
answer?
Speaker 3 (01:11:58):
Crash Bandicoot, it
is.
Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
Crash Bandicoot.
Very good, alright, you stillcontrol the board.
Speaker 3 (01:12:07):
Where would you like
to go?
How much 2020's moments for 400?
Speaker 1 (01:12:14):
Okay it's a daily
double.
Which sensational court casebetween two celebrities
dominated 2022 online fastenough donald, johnny depp and
amber heard that is correct.
That is correct for the DailyDouble alright, well, man, daily
(01:12:36):
Double, that looked good.
Alright, that was nice, did itactually?
Yeah, no, okay that was for 400, you got 800, okay.
Well, every time Phil saysthere's a Daily Double.
I've never seen that animation,I just wanted to make sure,

option to hit the button.
Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
Really, I mean to be
fair.
I was spamming it.
Speaker 2 (01:13:22):
I was like as soon as
I was like.
Speaker 1 (01:13:25):
I love that this is
working against you, phil.
Yes, tamagotchi is correct,it's correct?
Speaker 2 (01:13:31):
Did you guys ever get
the alien Tamagotchi when it
evolved to its fullest form?
No, I killed it every time Idid once, and then it got taken
away from me in school, so itdied while my teacher had it in
her desk.
Speaker 1 (01:13:43):
I'll never forgive
her.
That's tough, Donald.
Where would you like to go next?
Speaker 3 (01:13:50):
Let's do pop culture
geography for 200.
I don't even know what thatmeans.
Speaker 1 (01:13:56):
The fictional city of
Gotham is largely based on this
real US city, phil.
That is unfortunate.
Oh my God Donald.
Speaker 3 (01:14:08):
That's what I was
going to say.
New York, it is.
Speaker 1 (01:14:12):
New York Metropolis
is in.
Speaker 3 (01:14:14):
New York, I think
Metropolis is Chicago, isn't it
Chicago?
Speaker 1 (01:14:17):
Oh, it's reverse, I
believe so God damn it.
Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
The Batman movies
have the bridges in them, the
Chicago.
Speaker 1 (01:14:26):
Yeah, that's the 200
one too.
I thought that was obvious.
I didn't know the.
Speaker 3 (01:14:32):
Dark Knight movies
have the Chicago bridges.
No, no, like I said, I thoughtit was Chicago too.
Like I was, like, isn't itChicago?

Yeah, no, no, it is
not.
Speaker 3 (01:14:42):

running away with this already.
Where do you want to go?
Speaker 3 (01:14:50):

and Bombs for $200.
Speaker 1 (01:14:54):
Alright.
This 1975 film, directed bySteven Spielberg, is often
credited as launching the modernsummer blockbuster film.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
Jaws.
Speaker 1 (01:15:04):
It is Jaws.
Speaker 2 (01:15:06):

I just saw theaters.
I almost said ET.
It was either Jaws or ET.
Speaker 1 (01:15:11):
That wouldn't have
been a bad guess.
Yeah, but Phil just saw Jaws.
Speaker 2 (01:15:14):
Oh gotcha, that was
top of mind.
Fantastic cinema experience.
Speaker 1 (01:15:19):
Phil, where do you

It is Zelda.
Speaker 3 (01:15:51):
Yeah, I was like I
pick one or the other.
Speaker 1 (01:15:54):
It was a trick
question because I said the
titular character, princessPeach, is not in the title of
that game, but Zelda is.
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:16:04):
Reading comprehension
.
You know Florida education man.
Speaker 1 (01:16:09):

Kong, she's in the original
Donkey Kong Is she.
Speaker 1 (01:16:20):
Yes, I don't know
anything.
She's the one at the top tryingto get saved.
Speaker 3 (01:16:26):

Mario's trying to save her.
Speaker 1 (01:16:28):

Now it's happening to you, phil.
What is this meme called RickRolled?
Speaker 3 (01:17:05):
Yeah, that is correct
, I figured it out why you
couldn't press it.
Phil, If you press it too manytimes while it's gray, it blocks
it and doesn't let you hit it.
Oh, interesting, I was like, and it said blocked.
Speaker 1 (01:17:17):

Hollywood that even Hugh Jackmanand Epic Source material can't
guarantee success.

Speaker 1 (01:21:14):
Look at them,
juxtaposed on that terrible ship
.
Speaker 2 (01:21:15):

Squid Game was a
decent answer If it wasn't you,
phil.
If it wasn't you saying it, I'mso sorry, I'm going to kill
myself.
I'll be right back.
Speaker 2 (01:22:36):
Phil, where do you

Speaker 2 (01:23:28):

Pop culture, geography.
Speaker 1 (01:23:31):
Yeah, negative 400
apiece.
Speaker 2 (01:23:33):
We are tied.
Speaker 3 (01:23:35):
For 800 to go
positive the Daily.

The fictional nation of Genovia, phil in the Princess Diaries,
was filmed in what country?
Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
I read this totally
wrong.
Speaker 1 (01:24:03):
So obviously half the
film was filmed in the United
States before Genovia.
Where was that filmed?
Speaker 2 (01:24:12):
Trying to think of
what that could possibly be of
any european country that'srunning through my mind right
now scandinavia I tried to stopyou.
Speaker 1 (01:24:24):
I was like I promise
you it's not something like
obscure.
Uh, that is not the answer well, I'm done.

It can't be that
fucking stupid God damn it.
Speaker 2 (01:25:02):

I was going to guess
Dallas, so thank God I didn't go
.
Speaker 1 (01:25:39):
So Chicago, and then
the next one was Atlanta.
So, yeah, yeah, that is it, andit's a huge margin.
It's like California is wellabove New York and New York is
well above Chicago, and thenChicago and the rest are very
close to each other.
Speaker 2 (01:25:55):
Where's Jacksonville
on the list?

is very surprising.

movie?
Speaker 1 (01:27:35):
They beat the record
with Conjuring the Last Rites,
which is also like the highestgrossing horror film, like this

they were.

Yeah, no, I mean
inevitable, Inevitable.
