We trace how abiding in Christ clarifies what we ask for and why some prayers are answered with confidence. Through John 15, 1 John, and Paul’s thorn, we show how dependence on the Spirit shapes desires, grows fruit, and keeps us from falling away.

• abiding defined as continuing in belief
• fruit as evidence of dependence on Christ
• prayer aligned to God’s will, not wishlists
• John 15 and 1 John on confident asking
• Paul’s thorn redefining strength and grace
• the Holy Spirit as counselor and teacher
• love, assurance, and perseverance through the Spirit
• chosen to bear fruit that remains
• guidance, patience, and joy under trial

SPEAKER_01 (00:00):
Wait.
There is a world of articles, books, and information out there
when it comes to Christianity, but we are mostly stuck with
rhetoric and double talk when itcomes to our relationship with
the Lord, our new identity asbelievers, and the security and
finality of the work of Christ.
Are you getting everything youneed spiritually from your
church, or do you find yourselffeeling hungry for more?

(00:21):
Wake up.
Join Lenny as he unpacks whatScripture really taught about
our Lord Jesus Christ in contextand why this matters to you.
Wake up, wake up, wake up tograce.

SPEAKER_00 (00:32):
Welcome back everyone, and thank you for
joining me.
As promised, our study todaywill be about how we apply what
we've learned in our John 15passages.
Essentially, we'll be discussinghow to abide in Christ.
I'll also show you how the themethat we see of ask and it will
be done actually applies to usabiding in Christ and not merely

(00:54):
asking for Him to grant ourwishes.
I already know how to abide inChrist, you may be thinking, I
already believe.
But we must recognize thatalthough we do abide in Christ
when we believe, and he alsoabides in us, these passages are
about fruit bearing.
Yeshua is calling on hisbelievers to bear fruit.

(01:14):
This comes only through beliefand can only be done by belief.
Let me repeat this because it'simportant.
Abiding comes only throughbelief and can only be done by
belief.
In other words, the faith andbelief that saves us is the same
faith and belief that sustainsus.
We're called to live out ourbelief.

(01:35):
We're not called to liveindependent of the Lord or live
autonomously just doing whateverwe feel like.
We're called to live a holylife, which is to be guided by
the Spirit of God.
We're called to abide in,continue in, remain in Christ,
which is simply to continue inour belief.
We cling to the Lord in Hisguidance.

(01:56):
We're not directed by our ownguidance.
Proverbs 16 9 says, The heart ofman plans his way, but the Lord
establishes his steps.
When you first believed inChrist Yeshua, did you think
that gospel sounds good?
I need some help in my life, Icould use some extra blessings.
Or did you instead think, I needChrist, how can I be saved and

(02:20):
guided by Him?
I hope it was more like thelatter, because it will be
difficult to abide if the formerwas our disposition upon
salvation.
When we believed the gospel, wesaw our sinfulness and despised
it, didn't we?
When we believed the gospel, wetrusted God, did we not?
As newly regenerated Christians,we trusted that God would be

(02:42):
working in our lives, didn't we?
Did we not also want to knowwhere to start?
What we could do?
Yes, and that's typically whenwe're the most misguided by
today's leaders and churchinstitutions.
Without good discernment, we'llfind ourselves being guided by a
counseling handbook and not thecounselor that dwells within
ourselves.

(03:02):
We'll be guided by ourdevotional efforts and not the
Spirit of God.
Okay, so let's talk aboutabiding in Christ.
If we're talking about abidingin Christ, why in the world did
you title the message Ask and ItWill Be Done?
you might be thinking.
Well the disciples may have beenthinking that same thought.
How can this possibly haveanything to do with abiding?

(03:24):
In his vine and branches analogyin verse 7, Yeshua says, If you
abide in me, and my words abidein you, ask whatever you wish,
and it will be done for you.
And even more peculiar is thefact that he repeats it himself
again, displaying importance inverse 16.
We read, You did not choose me,but I chose you and appointed

(03:47):
you that you should go and bearfruit, and that your fruit
should abide, so that whateveryou ask the Father in my name,
he may give it to you.
In John 14, 13 it reads,Whatever you ask in my name,
this I will do, that the Fathermay be glorified in the Son.

(04:09):
If you ask me anything in myname, I will do it.
We see this concept ask and itwill be done being established
very much in the context of ourJohn 15, one through six
passage.
This must pertain to abiding.
But maybe it was specific to theapostles and those with the
miraculous spiritual gifts atthe end of the age.

(04:29):
After all, Yeshua was onlyspeaking to his true disciples
here.
Well, John spoils that idea whenhe echoes the words of Yeshua to
his entire audience.
In 1 John 3 21, we read,Beloved, if our heart does not
condemn us, we have confidencebefore God, and whatever we ask
we receive from him, because wekeep his commandments and do

(04:52):
what pleases him.
We see it said one way here, andthen he seems to want his
audience to understand it fromanother angle at the end of his
letter.
In 1 John 5 13, we read, I writethese things to you who believe
in the name of the Son of God,that you may know that you have
eternal life.
And this is the confidence thatwe have toward him, that if we

(05:13):
ask anything according to hiswill he hears us, and if we know
that he hears us in whatever weask, we know that we have the
requests that we have asked ofhim.
In this passage we seem to gainthe additional detail that we
need to understand the intent ofthe statement.
When we understand thereconciling grace of the gospel,
we can have confidence in oursalvation.

(05:36):
We then go beyond asking formore forgiveness.
We have all that we could everneed in Christ Yeshua.
Now we're able to ask for thingsthat are pleasing to the Lord.
We begin to think like Him moreoften and share in His desires.
We know that our Father hearsall of our prayers, but in this
context, John explains that theLord hears requests made

(05:58):
according to his will in adifferent way.
In these cases, we can know thatwe have the requests that we've
asked.
Based on this, how can we besure that we're thinking in line
with the will of our Lord?
When we ask for holy things?
When we ask for good things tohappen to certain people in our
lives?
We see neither of these ideaspresented here, do we?

(06:20):
No, we see that when ourrequests are granted, that our
will has lined up with theFather's will, don't we?
It's like magic that we neverperformed.
We simply believed in God mosthigh and received a reward in
our lives.
Is this reward limited to onlywhat we received?
Not even close.
When we find our will lining upwith the Father's will, we're

(06:42):
encouraged.
We're strengthened.
We've connected with the God whocreated all things on a personal
level, and his great love for ushas been magnified.
And that's only just gettingstarted.
We're granted our requests, andwe're taught the great value of
abiding in our spiritualrequests.
But how are we taught to abidehere?

(07:04):
We're taught to abide by ourHeavenly Father revealing his
will to us in our prayer life.
When we're granted requests,it's like the Lord telling us
you're on the right track now.
This is a request that honorsme.
I'm proud of you, my son, or I'mproud of you, my daughter.
We've been given directionalclarity.
The Lord has directed our steps.

(07:24):
Fruit has been produced in ourlives from the true vine.
We could never support inScripture the idea of this being
a genie in a bottle message likethe televangelists convince us
to believe.
Paul himself didn't even receivewhat he wanted all the time.
We see this in his letter to theCorinthians.
Corinthians 12 7 reads, So tokeep me from becoming conceited,

(07:46):
because of the surpassinggreatness of the revelations, a
thorn was given me in the flesh,a messenger of Satan to harass
me, to keep me from becomingconceited.
Three times I pleaded with theLord about this, that it should
leave me.
But he said to me, My grace issufficient for you, for my power
is made perfect in weakness.
Therefore I will boast all themore gladly of my weaknesses, so

(08:09):
that the power of Christ mayrest upon me.
For the sake of Christ then I amcontent with weakness, insults,
hardships, persecutions, andcalamities, for when I am weak,
then I am strong.
We see that for Paul, dependingon the Lord was going to have to
do, and when it was revealedthat the Lord's will was for him

(08:29):
to carry this thorn, though itmost certainly caused him
suffering, Paul changed his mindand embraced it.
In fact, he considered ourLord's response to be worthy of
boasting in.
Imagine the response that wouldoccur if a prosperity preacher
was told this by Yahweh.
You can practically hear themsaying, But that's not what I
deserve, Lord.

(08:50):
In a Roman study, we recentlytalked about how Paul had never
met most, if not all, of theChristians gathering in Rome.
He intended to go there and hehad not made it yet.
He prayed that he would be ableto.
When he found himself gettingattacked in Jerusalem, it may
have seemed like he would nevermake it to Rome.
But by the grace of God, hefound himself in Rome, though in

(09:12):
chains, he had made it to hisfinal destination and preached
the word in person to those inRome.
Sometimes we don't get immediateanswers, we have to be patient.
Sometimes our requests are notanswered.
But our lives will always beguided and enriched through the
requests that our Lordgraciously grants us in his good
will.

(09:32):
His grace is sufficient, so askand it will be done.
We are often taught to live aChristlike life, to be like
Christ.
So are we to raise the dead, heal the blind, boldly rebuke
the Pharisees of our day by theauthority of God?
Teach the law in all its truth?
Are we to strive for a sinlesslife above all else?

(09:56):
Is that what our scriptureteaches?
Or is there a much largermeaning to this concept?
Christ Yeshua was fully God andfully man.
We can't change this fact.
But Yeshua did not rely on hisown power during his earthly
life.
He remained perfectly dependenton Yahweh for everything.
This is the best example of holyliving that we could ever

(10:18):
receive.
So the popular question, whatwould Jesus do, has a very
simple answer.
Follow the guidance of theFather.
This is the real call to actionthat all Christians are
commanded.
You've been given all things.
Now live by those things.
You've been given a counselor.
Now follow his guidance, notyour own.

(10:41):
Ask and it will be given.
Sounds easy, right?
Well, not so much.
The things that come naturallyto us, as born-again Christians,
don't come easy.
The influence of the worldaround us is profound.
It's much easier to go with theflow of the world than to go
against it.
It takes more energy to swimupstream.

(11:03):
That's why we need the abidingpower of the Holy Spirit.
But now let's read our John 15passage just to keep it fresh in
our minds, shall we?
I am the true vine, and myfather is the vine dresser.
Every branch in me that does notbear fruit he takes away, and
every branch that does bearfruit he prunes, that it may
bear more fruit.

(11:23):
Already you are clean because ofthe word that I have spoken to
you.
Abide in me and I in you, as thebranch cannot bear fruit by
itself, unless it abides in thevine, neither can you, unless
you abide in me.
I'm the vine, you are thebranches.
Whoever abides in me and I inhim, he it is that bears much
fruit, for apart from me you cando nothing.

(11:46):
If anyone does not abide in me,he's thrown away like a branch
and withers, and the branchesare gathered, thrown into the
fire and burned.
We learn that this abiding powerwould come through the Holy
Spirit when we study the contextof Yeshua's words.
In John 14, we read, If you loveme, you will keep my
commandments, and I will ask theFather, and he will give you

(12:09):
another helper to be with youforever.
Ask and it will be given alsoapplies to belief, doesn't it?
It's a superficial prayer to askYeshua into your heart until it
actually comes true.
And we know it's true by thework of the Spirit in our lives.
There's so much we can gleanfrom these words.
Consider this.

(12:30):
Have you ever heard someonequestion whether Christians love
the Lord or not?
It would seem by these words ofChrist Yeshua that this would be
a false accusation when usedagainst one who has the Holy
Spirit dwelling in them.
We can't be given the Spiritunless we love the Lord.
On top of that, how can we evenconsider a loss of salvation

(12:50):
being possible with thelife-giving Spirit of Yahweh
living in us?
Continuing, we read, Johnfourteen twenty-three.
Jesus answered him, If anyoneloves me, he will keep my word,
and my father will love him, andwe will come to him and make our
home with him.
And then in fourteen twenty-six,but the helper, the Holy Spirit,

(13:13):
whom the Father will send in myname, he will teach you all
things and bring to yourremembrance all that I have said
to you.
Can you see the importance ofthe Holy Spirit in our abiding
as Christians?
It's everything, isn't it?
Yeshua actually makes it crystalclear that the disciples' love
was quite lacking prior to theirreceiving the Spirit of God.

(13:35):
In John 14, 28, we read, Youheard me say to you, I'm going
away and I will come to you.
If you love me, you would haverejoiced, because I'm going to
the Father, for the Father isgreater than I.
And now I have told you, beforeit takes place, so that when it
does take place you may believe.
From this we gather that theydidn't yet have the love Yeshua

(13:58):
was teaching about.
And why was this the case?
It was because they didn'tbelieve.
What didn't they believe?
They didn't believe in the crossand resurrection yet, because
despite Yeshua directly tellingthem, they couldn't understand
him until the Holy Spiritrevealed it to them.
We see this context illustratedagain in chapter 16.

(14:21):
In 1624, we read, Until now youhave asked nothing in my name,
ask and you will receive, thatyour joy may be full.
When it came to ask and it willbe done, they had asked nothing
thus far.
Here Yeshua seems to foretell oftheir receiving of the Holy
Spirit at Pentecost.

(14:42):
Ask and it will be donecertainly applies to our
salvation.
And what would make someone evenask such a thing?
In John 15, verse 16, Yeshuasays, You did not choose me, but
I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear
fruit, and that your fruitshould abide, so that whatever
you ask the Father in my name,he may give it to you.

(15:05):
I think this passage more thanspeaks for itself in answering
that question.
I talk on God's sovereignty inmessage number thirty-five and
thirty-nine, if you'reinterested in that.
In closing, we read why Yeshuasaid all these things to his
disciples.
John 16 1 says, I've said allthese things to you to keep you
from falling away.

(15:26):
They'll put you out of thesynagogues.
Indeed, the hour is coming whenwhoever kills you will think
he's offering a service to God,and they will do these things
because they have not known theFather nor me.
But I've said these things toyou that when their hour comes,
that you might remember thatI've told them to you.
I did not say these things toyou from the beginning because I

(15:46):
was with you.
When John echoes the words ofYeshua closing in on the end of
the age, we see that he fullyunderstood the purpose that the
Lord had for them.
The salvation that saves thesustained salvation that
sustains.
Salvation is not only for thenext life, we need it now.
Stay tuned for my next messageas we wrap up the abiding series

(16:07):
with some more application ofthe truth we've learned.
