Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the water Boys with myself, Mitch
McPherson and Xavier Doldy and Tazzy Senior Footy is back
today up at La Tribe and we're so excited to
have it back. And joining us today is a Tazzy
Senior Women's Talent Academy coach, Jody Clifford. First time on
the show. Jody, thanks for joining.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Us, no worries, pleasure to be here, No, thanks.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
For coming on to the show. Look, first time we've
had you on. As I mentioned, so we'd like to
know first. I mean you and Jess Webley took over
the reins of this state Academy coach last side last year.
How have you found it? How have you found the role?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah, it's been a really I've obviously been worked with
IFL TAZ before in an under eighteen capacity as a coach,
and so the senior women have been really rewarding in
terms of that level of expertise and that willingness to
get in and have a crack like they see this
is a real opportunity for them going into the future.
(00:49):
So it's been really rewarding. It's great to work with
a super motivated group of women that want to take
their footage to the next level.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Right, and it's game day today. How exciting is the
week when you're actually able to drag everyone back together
and get them all on the track together. Is that
actually the way it works? Do you get everyone together
given it to a statewide thing? Do you get one
the one or two training sessions or is it all
just meet on match day and see how you go?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
No? No, we had a training session earlier in the
week Campytown, so we did meet together, and we had
one scheduled the week before, but they closed Campertown Recreation Ground.
It's unheard of, Yes they did, and so we missed
one training session. So it's been a little while. We've
had a bit of a gap since our last game.
We played our last game at the back end of March,
so we have had a bit of a gap in that,
(01:38):
and the girls have gone back to their regional clubs,
but also played in the Reps series, in the statewide
rep series, so they've played a lot of footy. They've
still had connections. We've maintained connections through some whole state
training session throughout that period time. We had a couple
in May early June, so we've certainly kept contacts, but
this week's felt different and different because it is that
(02:00):
excitement of game day coming up.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Yeah. Absolutely, And as you said, there's been plenty of
rep games and all different sorts of things happening. I
don't think we've had consistent, you know, just club games
for a long time. How your selection wise, Jody, I
mean guessing you've been looking across all the footy since
the last game. How much do you lean into giving
opportunities to play as all whilst wanting to win.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, there's definitely a sense that we want to win,
but ultimately we want to we just want to keep improving.
We know that this is not the end game for us.
It's not the final result. This is part of the
journey on our way to that VFL program. So as
long as we keep improving, that's the main the main
aim for the team. But ultimately we go out with
(02:44):
every game and we want to win.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
That's why we play the sport, right that absolutely is. Now,
before we get to your opponent's Queensland today, talk to
us a little bit about the Latrobe Recreation ground. They've
pumped a bit of money into It's how have you
seen much footy there? How good does it look?
Speaker 2 (03:01):
I'm going to be really honest, I've never seen it.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Not what we thought.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
I had a quick drive by last night. I like
to have a bit of a visual learner. I like
to know where I'm going. I like to know cane
rooms and fits and pieces. So I had a quick
drive by and just orienting myself. But I've never played
a game of footy there. I've never watched a game
of footy there, and I've certainly never coached a game
of footy there. So look, I'm also opportunities and it's
(03:30):
great to have this caliber of footy played in Latrow,
which is, I guess the spiritual home of footy on
the Northwest Coast. Dal Parks obviously got a big reputation
down the Northwest coast, but it is nice to take
footy back to that community level.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
No, absolutely, and we've been talking about it all show
and we'll do for the rest of the show for
people to get along and have a look. Look, tell
us about the challenges at Queensland present. They do have
the wood over our women in recent times, so it
is going to be a big challenge.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah, it is, but I think this group, we've been
together since November and that's new to the program. So
having the girls or the women training their regional hub
groups consistently since November has been a big difference in
the program. Traditionally, they would have come in maybe June,
done two or three training sessions before this Queensland game.
(04:21):
So I feel like we're already ahead in terms of
where we were last year because we've got that foundation.
Then add on from what we learned from our the
three games we've played earlier in the year, and our
game against North Melbourne was a really steep learning curve
for us, but I think it was so important the
girls came out, they turned around and said we are
(04:44):
not fit enough, we are not fast enough, and so
over the last ten weeks they've done a massive running block.
They're the fittest I've ever seen them. And I've known
a lot of these girls through the under eighteen programs.
I've known them for four or five years. I've never
seen them move so well. So I think that brings
us at Queensland's level. It's now who adapts to the
(05:06):
conditions and who can execute their skills.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Oh absolutely, And it was on full display North about
a couple of weeks ago the REP game, getting down
there and watching that women's game that some of the
talent was unbelievable. So I can't wait to see them
come together. It will be a formidable force. Hey, Jody,
it's a big game today with the women's game twelve pm,
followed by the men at two. Tam up there at
La Trobe Tazzy Senior Women's Talent Academy Coach Jody Clifford,
thanks so much for coming on the water boys and
(05:28):
all the best this afternoon pleasure.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Thanks so much, guys, have a great day.
