Speaker 1 (00:00):
No matter what, the sport, where it's played, all the
teams behind it, We've got it. This is the water
Boys thanks to Tasmag, Devin Ford, Montston, Bridgewater and Smifton,
your local Kaboda dealer.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Good morning everyone, Welcome to the water Boys for another
super Saturday of sport. Brent Costello with you alongside Cam
Brown this morning to day Browny, here you going.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
I'm going very well Brent, obviously spending the next two
hours with you as I do you every second week now, yes, every.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
More you did last week too.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
You're going to get through all right, So that's good.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
You could have rotated me out and all that would
have meant if I can get back in.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
It would have been me so would of thoughts. Hey,
gather around seems to be a success so far and
with three games in we've got what that made? Six
to go. What have you thought of it so far?
We'll talk about it a bit more in depth later,
but it's not a bad idea, bag not a bad concept.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
If you're talking about the fullty, public embracing and fans
voting with their feet. All games of Lea've now been
sold out. Yeah, so yeah, a terrific initiative I think
from the AFL, and I think it's been well documented
the Pinchy idea off the NRL. But we'll talk about
what it might mean for Adelaide moving forward hosting gather
around and whether or not they flip flop it around

(01:16):
and allow other states to host it. But we'll wait
and see. But last night Brent Fremantle came from behind
in the end fifteen ten one hundred to defeat the
Gold Coast Sons thirteen twelve ninety. I reckon the Gold
Coast Sons will be bitterly disappointed to let that one
slip and then six goals to Tom Papley and the
Swans kicked seven goals in the last quarter to thump
Richmond in the end. Richmond eleven twelve seventy eight defeated

(01:39):
by the Sydney Swans eighteen fourteen one hundred and twenty two.
One game in the A League last night Brent Newcastle
Jets too defeated d MacArthur won. And in the NRAL
two games last night Cronulla twelve defeated the Roosters twelve
and Manly eighteen defeated the Storm eight.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, very nice and one game locally too in the
NPO Glenorcke Knights one new winners over South Hobart. So
a big weekend ahead of local sport. We'll get to
that later in the show. But what is coming up
please Brownie in our number one this morning' got lots
to get through.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
The relive the rivalry organizer. This has been happening now
for ten years.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
It's coming to ten years. That's what we've got. The
great man in for James.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
James Wigian is going to be joining us this morning, Brent,
which would be trivy to talk to him. And I
know he's got a couple of new signings for the match,
which is great. Josh Arnold, the new Glenorky Football Club coach,
ahead of their first game against Laud today they had
to buy in round one of the players questions without
notice too.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
I'm loaded up today to.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
Try and sneak. We normally have a couple of each.
You got three or four, have three or four?

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Have three or four. That's in the first owt. Then
big second hour coming up we'll talk about gather around.
Of course, Christine Fininggan will join us, the co CEO
of the Jack Jumpers Plenty to Dice Sect Christmas Christmas
Day match, so that's going to be great. To talk
to Christine about the sale of the club too, what
is going on with free agency as well. We haven't
signed a player, so Christine will be all over that
for us. And Jimmy Cassidy is going to join us

(03:03):
in the studio at Cambread two time Melbourne Cup winning jockey,
so that's going to be fantastic to wine up the show.
And also we'll go through some of the big games
this weekend in local sport. That's all I had for you.
In the next sixty minutes here on the water Boys.
In fact two hours. We're talking about two hours of
the water Boys. Don't go anywhere, big shower head. We'll
be backed out with more next thanks to tas Back,

(03:24):
your local Kubota dealer. It is the water Boys.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
This is the water Boys.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Thanks to Tasmack, your local Kibota dealer. It's the water
Boys with Brancosslo and Cam Brown inflecting on spot from
the past seven days. Here's the water Boys week and
wise lots to talk about here in the week that was.
I want to start with the Christmas Day NBL stuff
Brannie because I never thought we'd have a Christmas Day
game here in Tasmani, but here we are a doubleheader.

(03:50):
We're start against South East Melbourne Phoenix at five thirty
the jack Jumpers, and then the game up in Sydney
between the Kings and the Hawks. To me, it would
make sense to have the two New South Wales teams
playing and the two Victorian teams playing, and then no
one has to get on a plane. Does that make
sense to you? Can you see what they're trying to
do by including us in this concept. So I'm not upset.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
I'm pretty sure we had a discussion last year and
you were vehemently against a game Christmas Day.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
They'd be fair to look at that right now it's happened.
I'm certainly not against it, but I just I just
think do we need sport on Christmas Day? It's one
day the whole year. We used to have good Friday
three as well, so I don't think it hurts to
have one day with no sport. And I want to
ask you a question without notice about this ties into
it a bit later, but look now it's here. I

(04:39):
think it's exciting as well. The time slot's good. I
think five point thirty gives you a chance to have
Christmas lunch year before you go. It is tough for
the workers, I think because people at home. It's fantastic
for TV.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
I think because if you want to have dinner though, Bran, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
That's right exactly. It's not ideal and that in that sense.
And you know people do.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
Have two plans, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah, some tomes you go to your partner's family for whatever,
and then you go to your fan.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
I think they have quite common.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah, so it look, no doubt it causes some headaches
for people, but your choice, I suppose for a lot
of people that are just fans simply, but not not
the workers. That's that's the thing.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
So we'll talk to Christine Finnan about it obviously in
the next hour, Brent, because obviously the jack jumpers full
steam ahead for them, and they obviously want to.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
Make this a permanent.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yes, once you get an opportunity like this in this
morning calendar, you probably don't want to give it up.
So that's I think from a marketing an investment perspective,
they will be doing all they can to make sure
that this ficture has not taken off them yep.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Absolutely to catch Taran Thomas's latest antics during the week
with the car and footage.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Obviously read the story itself in the print media, but
I've got some real concerns for Taran Thomas Brendan. Obviously
he's well being, but also his long term future as
an a or footballer would have to be in some doubt.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
I would have thought, no, I think so, and I
think before this footage was released he was about to
be welcomed back again to the Kangaroos. That's put it
back well, it's more whether he plays or not for
a long time, but he was going to be welcomed
back into the club. But he's obviously doing a lot
of training. We saw that during the week off outside
of the club.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
And we don't know the full story, but he must
be testing the club's patients at this particular point in time,
and the narrative from them is absolutely we want to
support our player and you wouldn't expect them to do
anything less. But it'd be interesting if it comes to
the end of the season. I'm not sure contractually where
he is, but he's at his best. He's a top

(06:43):
ten player at that footag club absolutely there's been in
the top ten and the best and fairest previously, so
we'll wait and see where.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
That one pans out.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
But you'd hope that he'll make some progression off the
field and get back to playing footage.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Josh Giddy, want to talk to you about him? Some
good nick, isn't he He's exciting?

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Well, you're obviously talking about his first playoff game where
he nearly scored a triple double thirty odd points.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Wasn't it unbelievable?

Speaker 3 (07:09):
I think he had ten assists, only two turnovers, so
his ball security, for one of a better word, was terrific.
And he's three point shot, which is probably not a
strong point if he's in an area of grace in
his game. He was to pick with that. The way
he's tracking, Brent's probably well on the way to being
the greatest basketball Australias ever produced.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
That goes on my course. Yeah, absolutely no, it's hard
to argue.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Definitely, And they're an exciting team, aren't they The second youngest,
the Oklahoma City Thunder the second youngest team across the NBA.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
So we'll see how they go. What do they call it,
the playing match?

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Playing is exactly right so that the NBL two earlier
this year. What do you make of the Masters now
it's only a week old, but good result. Happy with
the result.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
With Ram yet the Spaniard. So that's he's his second
title in his twenty so he's I think he won
the US Open back in twenty twenty one. Yeah, I enjoyed.
I actually watched the last round, Brent. I thought it
was really exciting. Brooks Keepker, who had a four strike
lead coming in unfortunately for him, really fell off the pace.
What about the story of Phil Mickelson finishing the top five?

(08:18):
I think the oldest person ever fifty one? Was he
not to do that? We had the interesting biplay of
live golf. What about brooks Kepka, Brent, can you mount
an argument that maybe the fact that he only lived golf.
We know they only play three rounds. He got fifty
four holes and he fell apart in the final round.

(08:39):
He's had a long bow for me to suggest maybe
match conditioning and the fact that he didn't get through
seventy two holes and he's accustomed to playing fifty four
did that have any bearing on the final result?

Speaker 4 (08:53):
You hadn't thought about that.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
I hadn't actually no, you've put me on the spot
there a little bit. I'm sure. I'm not sure, but
I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what was extraordinary.
That was the trees falling down far out.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
How they see the footage of that? Unbelievable scary stuff,
wasn't it? Australian's look, We've only ever had one Master's winner,
which was Adam Scott. Jason Day fell away in the
end and Cameron Smith never really got going. Adam Scott
started off the tournament pretty well. So another year obviously

(09:25):
we'll have to wait to see if someone can wear
a green jacket from Australia and join Adam Scott. Did
you catch the Matilda's sprint? That was a very big
win over the European champions, albeit a friendly to nil.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
Was it sixty odd games that England hadn't lost it
something like that? Was an incredible streak and they've knocked
him over to nil.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
So looking forward to the Women's World Cup, I had
a look at the fixture. I was looking at it
last night when I saw the run sheet in the
World Cup drawing Australia got It's reasonably difficult, Paul. I
won't say the Group of Death because we say that
Australia play yeah, but they do have Canada in the
group where I think I ranked six or seven. They
go the world, the Republic of Ireland and Nigeria. So

(10:09):
jesus one of those teams in the twenties from memory,
it won't be easy.

Speaker 4 (10:13):
But that was a two result, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
Absolutely well done? It to the Matilda's that was fantastic
and I think it was one hundred days ago, a
few days ago. So it'll creep around pretty quickly Women's
World Cup. Looking forward to it. Looking forward to the
rest of the show as well. Later this our Questions
without notice, Josh Arnold will also join us from the
Glonkey Footy Club. But out next we are talking relive
the Rivalry with James Wiggins. Here on the water Boys

(10:35):
doing it all thanks to Tasmac, your local Kbota dealer
right across the state. On this Saturday morning. This is
the water Boys, thanks to Tasmak, your local Coboda dealer.
It's the water Boys with Brent Costello and Cam Brown
for your Saturday morning. April fifteen, twenty twenty three, and
twenty twenty three marks a big year for one of
our favorite events here in Tasmania Relive the Rivalry, the

(10:58):
annual charity Legends game and it's held here in the state.
And joining us to celebrate the tenth anniversary and provy
what's to come later this year is the organizer of
Really the Rivalry, James Wiggins. We go, Welcome back to
the water.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
Boys, good morning, how are.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
We We're well, mate, We are well and we're really
excited about what's to come in October for the tenth
edition of Relived the Rivalry. You're actually really proud of
where you've got this game to you.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
It's pretty amazing. Obviously started back in March two evenand
and twelve. Never thought we would get to this day.
But listen, there are a wonderful bunch of people that
donate their time to give something back to a charity.
But also it's great for us to have a chance
to say goodbye.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
No doubt about that. So ten years, you've been around
the state a little bit. You've been to the Huon Valley,
you've been to Utah Stadium, to Dial Park in Pengham,
but you're back home to where it all began at
North Harvard Able for the tenth edition.

Speaker 5 (11:56):
Yeah, it makes sense. Obviously you've got the first game
back in March twoth even Or was at North Havard
and the game was based on the nine and ninety
State of Origin game where obviously you had that famous
victory over the Big Lee. So it's worked out really
well and we're obviously.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
Looking forward to it any here.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Mate, congratulations again for putting such a wonderful event together
later on the year. Can I ask you when you
started back in twenty twelve, was it the intent just
to have a one off game and then it became
really successful and then all of a sudden you thought,
actually we could do this annually. Can you yeah, talk
us through. I guess what your initial thoughts were going

(12:33):
back ten years ago.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
Yeah, sort of, thanks Brandie. Obviously the motivation was I
just think we miss out on so much in Tasmania. Also,
as I said before, we don't get a chance to
say goodbye to some of our heroes, so that was
the aspect of the game starting, and also obviously trying
to raise the money for the little mate Lucas Peters
who suffers from an illness to get it off the ground,

(12:58):
and obviously I think the year we started making money
was fantastic and a lot of the guys now go
and tell their mates and other people that are associated
that played football with and sell it for me say,
and whilst the energy.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Is there, will keep it going and we obviously, you know,
the exciting part of the really of the rival is
every year there's normally you know, five or six recently
retired players that generously donate their time to become involved
in the game. I read with interest some of the
signings already that are going to come for the game
this year. Can you bring us up to speed with

(13:32):
those names?

Speaker 5 (13:34):
Yeah. Obviously for the Tasmanian team, the debut players will
be Aaron Joseph, the former Conwacke, Colvin Boy, Chris Bond
for his first game, obviously had a decorated career with
Richmond and Freemantle and Calvin Darren Pritchard who tappained the
Tasmanian team in nine and obviously wonderful player for Hawthorne.
Grant Birchill who's obviously recently retired from prison and full

(13:56):
time apprenticeship player with Hawthorne. Mitch Robinson, colorful character that
obviously started at Carlton and recently finished at the Brisbane
lines and with the All Stars at the moment. Fortunate
enough for get Dez Headlin, who obviously played in the
Brisbane Premiership at Frio and a number one draft pick,
and Matthew Primus as well as the regular face as

(14:16):
Russell Robinson, Michael Paul Hudson and for the All Stars Micheyo,
Richard Champi and Daryl White and a few of those guys.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Fantastic stuff. Now how long has this got left? We go?
You can see this guy for the next twenty to
thirty years. You're going to keep at it.

Speaker 5 (14:33):
I'll be eighty by the time it's thirty years, Brent.
But listen, it's been wonderful. And as I said Walsh,
the image he's there, I'll do it. And as I say,
I think it's a great Dean. You know, obviously just
want people come out and support it. One of the
money race goes towards the charity. And you know, as
I say, run donats their time and it's a good day.

(14:53):
It's good fun and good.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
Dal Here, what's your favorite memory from the ten years.
There must be something that sticks out. Are you on
the boots? Didn't you a year or two ago.

Speaker 5 (15:03):
Probably brink your cell trying to play on Brendan's.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
The bowl on one try, Brownie, you were there, you
watched that me keep fev goals. He kicked about eighteen behind.
He didn't kick a gual on me, which was good.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
No, I thought the classic was one of your colleagues
having to play on Socconnells who was under the weather
in the first game and early early days. In the
first half of the game he was struggling a bit
with alcoholic haze and then he started he started sobering
up and I think he kicked three or four on
Blair in the last quarter on the game.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
There you go, I don't remember Blarry playing. Oh yes
I do, Yes, I do.

Speaker 6 (15:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Anyway, mate, Well we love the event. It's it's always
good and obviously we'll get you back on a few
times in the lead up to prevy what's to come,
and you've got a few more big announcements to come,
maybe one even next week.

Speaker 5 (15:54):
Hate Yeah, absolutely so. Saturday October the seventh at Northaber
there will be a female game of the main game,
a h on webside against hopefully aside from this and
sure the combined side and thank you very much you support.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
We love it. James Wiggins, thanks for your time on
The water Boys this morning and yet April sorry October seven,
Brownie and why haven't you played yet? Actually we need
to get you a jersey.

Speaker 4 (16:19):
Brent what Brent?

Speaker 2 (16:22):
Absolutely start talking? We go there absolutely well, all right,
So we've got plenty more to get through on the
first hour of the show this morning. Not too far
away is Questions without Notice. But up next we're heading
to kg Fire to talk to the new Glanorkey footy
club coach Josh Arnold, head of their first game at
the start against Louderdale after what can only be described

(16:42):
as a tumultuous off season. That is next on the
water Boys. Thanks to tas back your local Coboda dealer.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
This here's the water Boys.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Thanks for tas Back your local Coboda dealer. It's the
water Boys with Brent Coselo and Cam Brown for you
Saturday morning. Been a really tough off season for the
Glanorky footy club, but they get the chance to put
it all behind in this afternoon when they run out

(17:12):
for game one of their TSL season. Of course, the
buy last weekend to kick things off. But one man
that's led the charge out there at KG five over
the summer months, taking on the top job from Aaron Cornelis,
is the new senior coach, Josh Arnold, who's been good
enough to join us on the water Boys this morning.
Welcome Josh Money Boys. Great to great to have you on, mate.

(17:33):
How tough has it been the last six months or so?
As I said, you took on the top job from
Ace when he stood down. But sounds like things are
moving in the right direction. Mate. You said the other
day at the press conference you got around the mid
thirties on the track and things are looking pretty good.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (17:48):
Yeah, it has been a battling time over the last
six months, but it's been really pleasing that everyone's jumped
in and slays up and been able to help out
where possible. Obviously, Crooky footy clubs are very club and
we've had many pass players and officials willing to put
their hand up and help out, and it's been fantastic
to get to this position we were able to field
a team and run out today and play our first

(18:10):
game for the year.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
Absolutely, mate, very exciting. Indeed, how will you go? Obviously
you've you've had to get what you can. I guess
as far as players go, But are you confident you'll
be competitive in twenty twenty three.

Speaker 5 (18:22):
Yeah, we're very confident.

Speaker 6 (18:23):
We've put in amount of work over the pre season
and obviously we've maintained a lot of our lists from
last year still and those guys have had another season
and pre season under their belt, and it's they're really
excited to get stuck in this year. A lot of
our young guys have stood up and probably shows with
our leadership group we've got a bit of a mixed
mixed balance with some older guys but also with some
younger guys as well. They're really enjoying the challenge and

(18:45):
look forward to hopefully making a few upset games this
year and getting a win on the board.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
And Josh, it's Brownie here, thanks for joining us, mate.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
I guess a two part question from you had the
bye last week, did you go and have a look
at Lord against Clarence? And also I read with interest
where you're really looking to free the team up and
play an attractive, attacking brand of footy this year and
I guess how much have you worked.

Speaker 4 (19:11):
On that over the preseason?

Speaker 7 (19:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (19:14):
Mate.

Speaker 6 (19:14):
Yeah, look, we did get a chance to get down
and have a look at lader Ow. Obviously they lost
a lot of players as well. We've still got a
wealth of experience in that line up and some stars
of the competition.

Speaker 5 (19:25):
I think that don't underestimate that.

Speaker 6 (19:27):
Those guys down there. I'll definitely be up there this
year and that's some quality guys that can stand up
in big game. So we'll be on our illusions that
will be coming out today and really looking forward to
the challenge and we've got to be ready for them
to hit the ground running. And then the other was
the other question, Sorry mate, I just.

Speaker 4 (19:47):
The second part.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
You know that I read that you're really looking to
play an attractive, attacking brand of footy, almost release the
shackles a little bit on the playing group this year.

Speaker 6 (19:57):
Yeah, so mate, yeah we are. Yeah. Look, obviously being
a young group, we don'tant to put too much pressure
on the group, and you know, I let them go
out there and just play footy and really enjoy playing
footy and playing footy with each other, and you know,
we'll play a really exciting brand of football and use
that to our advance. You know, we're a small so
I've got plenty of speed and we want to try
and use that to our advans and just let them

(20:18):
go out there and have some fun and play, play
an exciting brand of footy.

Speaker 4 (20:22):
And what about you, Josh?

Speaker 3 (20:24):
In some ways unexpectedly the way the coaching opportunity came
about with obviously Ace unfortunately having to step away from
the role. But was coaching something you know, We've known
you've been in the leash your group for a long
time at Glamorky, But was that something always in the
in the back of mind that you wanted to coach
a club out right?

Speaker 5 (20:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (20:43):
Yeah, Look, I've been pretty lucky over the last four
or five years. You know. Originally under Peak I was
in the line line coaching role with the Defenders, and
then last year under Aaron, and there was always a
sort of a passion to mine that I really enjoyed
that those those times in those line rolls, and as
the more I'd got the taste for it, the more
I enjoyed it, the more i wanted that next next

(21:03):
challenge into taking a senior role. And I've really enjoyed
the experience so far. I've had plenty of sport from
from goals around the club and the footy club itself
and and the and the playing group as well. So
you know, look, I've really enjoyed it and look forward
to the challenge ahead.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
And what about on match day, Josh, Obviously you'll be
taking the range really strongly with the organization and planning
game plans during the week. But but on match day,
will you hand over a fair bit of autonomy and
decision making to a bench coach or will you still
be pretty much hands on in that playing coaching role.

Speaker 6 (21:38):
Yeah, I look, I'll hand most of those reigns over.
If Daniel Muller is not playing here will take the
rains game day. If he's obviously playing a lot today,
then that will get handed over to David Camrick. And
you know, the message from our line coaches is our
preparation is during the week and game day is really
just about getting out there and playing and and they'll
monitor it throughout the game. Match Committe. We have discussions

(22:01):
about matchups and different plans throughout the game and when
we need to change those and those guys, I've got
confidence in those goals to be able to make those
decisions on game day and if they need to come consolidate.
We've made they will, but I've got full confidence in them,
made to run the show on game day.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
For us, Josh Annel before we let you go, you
got lorded ol today. They had a pretty disappointing loss,
it's fair to say last week against Clarence. How do
you assess them going to this game?

Speaker 6 (22:27):
Yeah, look, that'd be flying up there, a proud club.
I'll be ready to bounce back this week. Obviously Brice
comes back into the fold as well as obviously been
a massive lader their footy club, so they'll be pumped
and ready to hit the ground running. We're on to
no illusions. It's going to be a tough game, but
we really look forward to the challenge and look forward
to getting out there for our first game for the year.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Well mate, all downe to you because tough gig that
you've taken on, but we know what the club means
to you and how long you've been there, and you're
a great servant and law servant, So congratulations on what
you've done and good luck for the season ahead. Big job,
but I'm sure you're right man for it. Thanks for
joining us on the water boys, No.

Speaker 6 (23:01):
Rich boys, appreciate it. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
Josh Arnold, the senior coach of Gonakey joining us on
the show this morning. Just quickly brown a couple of
other games happening today as well. North Hobart traveling up
north to take on Lon Cess and at Windsor Park.
You'd think the Blues will get the job done there, Yeah,
you think so.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
A tough ass for north Over.

Speaker 3 (23:18):
They haven't got a great record traveling up to Windsor Park,
so you think, yeah, launchest and fairly comfortably in that one.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
And the other game is going to be a beauty too.
Down at the twin Ovles North Contest and traveling down
to take on the Tigers, that'll be a cracker.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
Yeah, two teams you'd think would be right there. At
the business end of the season. North Ln System were
pretty impressive, went down by kick one, was out last
Friday night to last year's premiers, and Tigers were pretty impressive,
particularly in the first half against North Igh.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
But the fact that it's being played at the Twins,
I'm going to go the Tigers very good.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Big day TSL. We'll look at some of the other
games a bit later on the show. From the other
legs across Tasmania. But up next we're going to put
each other under the pump Withestions without notice. That is
after this here on the water Boys do it All
thanks to our friends at tas Make your local Kmbota
dealer right across Tasmania on this Saturday morning.

Speaker 4 (24:09):
This is the water Boys.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Thanks being company on the water Boys doing it All
thanks to tas Mak your local Kobota dealer. On this
Saturday morning break, Costolo on Camp Brown with.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
You if it's our time with the toughest segment in
Tasmanian radio is Questions with a Notice.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
Yeah, we love it. This is where we throw each
other a question without notice and you always get the
new ball Camp So I'm going to go with it
today Christmas Day, we talked about it off the top
of the show. Do you think we've got two MBL games?

Speaker 7 (24:37):
Now?

Speaker 2 (24:37):
If we get a BBL game, which I think is
inevitable and potentially a league is well down the track
because everyone's going to do it once now the NBL's
unearthed this. Do you think it takes any gloss off
the Boxing Day test? Because I think some of the
beauty of the Boxing Day tests in the past has been.
You've got no sport on Christmas Day. Everyone's dying for

(24:58):
it by day and morning and ready for that first
ball or does it just stand up on it in
its own right the boxing day test.

Speaker 4 (25:05):
Well, that's a really good question.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
I hadn't thought about that. Maybe it now merges into
a huge sporting collection of fixtures now if we go
on to Christmas Day. So I think you probably have
a point there because it was standarone, it wasn't it.

Speaker 4 (25:22):
And even.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
Well, going back a few years Brent, there wasn't much
happening Christmas Eve either on the spark Calndar, so that
was even more of the anticipation and excitement and wait
for a boxing day test, particularly when it was Australia
in England or the West Indies when you and I
were growing up, were obviously terrific fixtures in their own right.

Speaker 4 (25:41):
But yeah, you're probably right.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
It probably does take a little bit off it because
we're becoming more accustomed and climatized to the sport just
about happening on every day now, isn't it. Once upon
a time wasn't on good Friday news correct day Christmas Day,
So there's virtually no day in the Inn as the exempt.

Speaker 4 (26:01):
From sport, which is sad in some ways.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
Yeah, I know you're a strong family man, so you'd
be slightly compromised on that one. Brent. We spoke about
gather Around earlier on in the show and obviously that
concept is fantastic. All the matches being played in Adelaide,
they've all been sold out across the weekend. Should South
Australia now have an opportunity to consolidate gather Around in

(26:28):
the next couple of years and make that a permanent
fixture for that state and on the AFL calendar? Or
do you believe gather Round should be rotated around and
potentially even down the track five or six years time
in Tasmanian You might play some games in Hobart and
lon System. Yeah, other areas of the state.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
Not with interest in McLoughlin's comments yesterday saying it probably
should stay in South Australian really embed itself there, But no,
I like the idea of it rotating. I think it's
a brilliant y. You go to Perth next year, for example,
go to Sydney, go to Brisbane and yes obviously come here.
I think the ideal time to come here would be
the year before we get our team. But no, and
I think it absolutely needs to rotate. Maybe having in

(27:10):
South Troy one, well you just because it's a new
concept two years, but then definitely move around every year
or do you do two years in each spot? Maybe,
but no, definitely keep it moving. And I had to
laugh during the week when I saw a post on
social media saying Melbourne should get gathered around. I mean,
come on, you get five games a weekend anyway, typically
it's not new for Melbourne to have Well.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
Come on that church, how eve I am. I never
even thought that Melbourne would be one.

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Of the absolute that's ridiculous. There would be no nobody
factor in that whatsoever it was anyway, Uh right, Cam,
do you see helmets becoming compulsory in the AFL A
lot of concussion stuff on it going on obviously, and

(28:00):
all class actions and things like that. Do you think
at one point, whether it's five years, ten years, that
everyone will be required to wear some form of helmet.

Speaker 4 (28:11):
No, I don't think so.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
And I'm not being dismissive of the seriousness and safety
concerns that we've had around some of these more documented
cases previous AFL players that have retired and had all
sorts of issues post career with concussion and brain injury
in the like and other links to medical conditions, And

(28:33):
obviously you're talking about Patty mccarton in particular as well.
So I think the I think players obviously have to
be put in some things to mitigate risk, and whether
or not that's individual players that have been susceptible to
concussions would have to wear helmets, but whether or not
be compulsory, I think that would be a step too

(28:55):
far at this point.

Speaker 4 (28:57):
But who knows. We didn't wear.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Helmets years ago, Brent did we back in the seventies,
And it looks unbelievable now when you watch some of
the old footage that you'd think that people go out
there and face fast bowlers of one hundred and fifty
clicks without the helmet.

Speaker 2 (29:13):
He might say, it just become a thing that players
choose to do on.

Speaker 4 (29:16):
That scene, Yeah, yes, and more.

Speaker 3 (29:18):
Yeah that's but yeah, I think there's a great awareness
about the dangers and risk around concussion, So I think
that's a good thing. Medically, we've made some significant advances.
Brent has Tasmanian cricket done enough to keep Jackson Bird.
Now I'm not saying he's leaving, but I he is leaving.

(29:39):
He's gone, right, Okay, So I believe and you'd know
more than me, that Tasmania offer him a one year
deal with the option of a second year, but New
South Wales have offered him stumped up a two year deal.
Looks like he's going to go back three hundred and
fifty Yeer wickets from his seventy eight matches. He's been
an absolute staff for TASMANI.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
Most wickets since you cricket for Tasmania and next best
is Ben Hill frowns. I think ninety odd behind the fact.

Speaker 3 (30:05):
We've lost Siddele, surely there could have been an opportunity
to given to your contract.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
Would have thought so one of our greatest of all time.
I believe what I heard the monetary offer was very
low ball, right, So absolutely don't blame if for going,
but it wouldn't have been nice to see him finish
his career in Tasmania. And then I think he wants
to coach, as far as I understand, put a coaching
component in there. Keep your champions.

Speaker 4 (30:31):
See, I'm unlucky, not to have played more Test cricket.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Absolutely, absolutely, I think people.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Are closer to the game then you and I would
probably say, look if you had an extra five or
ten kilometers in speed, particularly going back a few years
ago under the Leman here and there was that real
push to have everyone bowling one hundred and forty clicks.

Speaker 4 (30:49):
But he had a pretty decent Test career as well.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
Absolutely, it'll be a sad day when he does leave
the Tasmanian set up. There's no doubt about that. We
mentioned Josh Giddy before. Yes, at the end of his career.
As you say, very young, where's he going to rank?
You think, as far as Australian.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
Basketball would be extremely confident he'd be the greatest basketball
player Australia has ever produced.

Speaker 2 (31:14):
Big, big, big call.

Speaker 3 (31:16):
But so who would you rate for instance, like you'd
obviously be drawn to people like Andrew Gay's, Paddy Mills,
Joe Ingles, those sorts of players.

Speaker 4 (31:29):
But you're right, he's running the point.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
For ANBA team, for an NBA team and doing some
extraordinary things as a twenty.

Speaker 4 (31:38):
Year old twenty Gay All Star the way he's going, so.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
I think the sky is a limit for him. Excited,
but I think he's already on the way Brent. Have
Arsenal blown their opportunity to win the English Premier League
or you think the cinder roller story can hold on?
They haven't won it for a number of years.

Speaker 2 (31:59):
Where are we at?

Speaker 3 (32:00):
A bit of a hiccup last week to kneel up
against Liverpool squandered that.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Let's break it down. So they've got the harder draw,
there's no doubt about that. Arsenal six points ahead and
now I think I've top my head and got a
game in hand. Yeah, I was about to say so.
I think it's all going to come down to this
game when they meet in a few weeks time.

Speaker 4 (32:21):
When you'd say that, well it is, isn't it. Yeah?

Speaker 3 (32:24):
And that's at the Eddy head. It's going to be
tough for the Gunners. They might have blown it, Brownie,
I'd be really disappointed.

Speaker 4 (32:30):
I think they can hold on Brent all right.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
That is questions without notice. If you've got a question
for us for questions that notice, get in touch on
laws on socials and let us know, because we do
like putting each other under the pump with questions without notice. Hey,
that's the end of the first out, big first out too.
We've got lots more to come in extra time though,
after new Sport and whether we're going to talk about
gather around all the games so far and the ones
to come. Christine Finnegan will join us from the Tasmania

(32:54):
Jack Jump as the co CEO. Jimmy Cassidy will join
us in the studio to the two time Melbourne Cup
winning jockey and wind up the show looking at some
of the games becoming local sport this weekend and the
next winner of our Good Sport Award. That's after New
Sporting Weather here on the show, doing it right across
TAZ money at thanks to tas back your local Cobota dealer.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
This is the water Boys.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
Nice nice, nice first down, but we have got plenty
more so to come. Here an extra time with the
water Boys on this Saturday morning before we get to
what's coming up though. Brownie cut the games in the
AFL yesterday.

Speaker 3 (33:26):
Yes, a four goal to two last quarter saw Freeman
All get up over the Gold Coast. Freeman le fifteen
ten to one hundred defeated the Gold Coast thirteen twelve
ninety and a big last quarter from the Swans saw
them run out forty four point winners against the Tigers.
The Swans eighteen fourteen one hundred and twenty two Tom
Papley with six defeated Richmond eleven twelve seventy eight old

(33:49):
keep rolling if you don't mind your two games in
the NRL, Cronulla twenty two defeated the Roosters twelve and
mainly eighteen defeated the Storm eight and one. Match in
the A League last night Newcastle too defeated MacArthur FC one.
Now there was a game last night.

Speaker 2 (34:08):
Locally, yes, in NPL yep, Glenorchy a big win over
South Hobart. That'd be a surprise, yeah, a little bit
No one Neil, So that's a great win for the Knights.
We'll talk about soccer a little bit more in the
show later on, but we've got a big, big second
out coming up. After the break. We'll talk about gather
around so far and what's to come. Christine Finigan the

(34:28):
tasvany Jack Jabbers coach CEO plenty to ask Christine about
when she joins us in the next twenty minutes or so.
Racing Jimmy Cassidy the two to on Melbourne Cup winning jockey.
When a Cox played a Corefield Cup, I think he
did it all. One hundred group one winner's amazing sort
of record for Jimmy Cassidy will join us in the studio.
We'll have the Good Sport Award. We'll go through some

(34:49):
of the big games happening too locally across Tasbany that's
still to come here in our two of the water
Boys this morning. Don't go anywhere doing it all thanks
to Tasmack, your local comboda dealer.

Speaker 4 (34:57):
This here's the water Boys.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
Through seven h I FM in Hobar to l A
FM in Lon Sesson, seven A D and Devonport, seven
bu Bernie and seven Excess on the West coast. You
are with the water Boys for a Saturday morning with
Brent Costello and Cam Brown.

Speaker 1 (35:12):
Turning their attention to the national game. It's the water
Boys AFL.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
Ramp lots to talk about here, we gather around. We
spoke about that earlier in questions without notice, So let's
get stuck into the footy itself. Cam and it all
started back on Thursday night and you have been super
bullish on the Adelaide Crows and gee, who's there looking good?

Speaker 3 (35:31):
In the eight as you know, Brenton, they were outstanding.
I thought, now, I was just delighted in the game.
From a Tasmanian perspective, I thought he was terrific.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
Actually I should have said under you at the time,
but I said, someone, this is fantastic to see because
I was concerned for him in his future change.

Speaker 3 (35:50):
Well, yeah, and we've discussed it at length. He was
an outstanding junior, and I thought Adelaide did the right
thing taking that early. He was a pick inside, but
they've been really patient with him. Only the second or
third game. He's got over twenty possessions. And you and
I spoke a couple of weeks ago. He came on
as the sub and actually performed pretty well, and then

(36:11):
you know, it was pretty solid last week. But that's
his best game at the level. And you saw something
running patterns and how much he covered the ground, So
he was terrific. Would have been in Adelaide's best three
or four players, would have thought, but they've got a
dangerous forward line, Brent, haven't they?

Speaker 2 (36:26):
Walkers playing as good as he ever hasged. He was outstanding,
terrific ranking.

Speaker 3 (36:32):
And probably on target for forty five goals, which are
just about making him in all Australian. I mean, this
is their early predictions.

Speaker 2 (36:39):
There's a bit of criticism when they recruited ranking wasn't
there what.

Speaker 3 (36:42):
They gave was but geez, they knew what they were doing.
Homish Ogilvy and the list managers there. Lad you any
concerns for Carlton.

Speaker 2 (36:49):
Brent a little bit. I thought they'd get beaten the
other night, and I was right. They haven't. Really, they
have won games without setting the world alt, haven't they.
They've been made to work for their wins, so first
lost the season, so we can't be too harsh on them.
But they've got some things to work out.

Speaker 3 (37:04):
I think, well, they got some killed in next week,
so that'll be a really interesting game in itself. Gee,
I would have thought Gold Coast would be bitterly disappointed.
They led for a lot of that game last night
against Freemantle, but in the end Carleb Sarong I thought
was terrific. Shieltz with three goals and the Dockers. Yeah,
they probably found another one in Young and Miss, who

(37:25):
they took us an early draft pickick three goals. So
unfortunately for the Gold Coast it's probably going to ramp
up a.

Speaker 4 (37:32):
Bit of pressure. I would have thought for Stewey due
in the next three or four weeks.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
Yeah, definitely, would you make if the Swans last night
their defense was depleted, but they got the job done
pretty comfortably in the end. It was tight at three
quarter time. Richmond weren't going away, but a big last
quarter from the Swans saw them have a huge victory
at the out laid over.

Speaker 3 (37:51):
Yeah, Jack Reewitt with four goals a bit of a
lone hand for the Tigers. But yeah, Sydney, I thought
they were terrific, particularly late Blake. He's having an outstanding
season off half back. Thirty possessions. Warner was his best
game for the season, no doubt about that. Pertab we
were mentioned with his six goals. I thought Heney ran
into a bit of form. I thought it was one

(38:11):
of Laddam's better games for Sydney since coming across from
Port Adelaide. So I'm not sure about Richmond. Brent, where
do you think they're sitting at the moment.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
We got some injuries, haven't they.

Speaker 4 (38:22):
Baker I thought had a strong game.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
Taranto and hop A there's a hopper sixty odd possessions
between them, last night. But random not a great ball user.
It's got to be shit. He's a great ball winner.
But they're just a little bit off the pace the Tigers,
aren't they? Yeah, they am.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
As I said, with the injuries they've got, it's going
to be difficult for him. I would have thought let's
go through.

Speaker 3 (38:43):
Having said that, I reckon Sam Banks is a real
chance to make his next week. He played pretty well
last night again in the ver Fell against Carlton.

Speaker 4 (38:52):
Hey's stringing together some consistent form.

Speaker 3 (38:55):
It wouldn't be surprised if he is a sneaky chance
to get a game next week.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
And the Adelaide Hills afternoon ten past one, Brisbane hosting
Northwall hosting. The first team named is not their home ground.
They're taking on North Melbourne though, any sniff for North
Melbourn or Brisbane a big win.

Speaker 5 (39:10):
No, are you?

Speaker 3 (39:11):
Well?

Speaker 4 (39:11):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
The line's pretty short when it's all said and done
in that game, which might flow to North Melbourne. But
they haven't been blasted out of the water at any
stage this season, so they've been pretty competitive. But it's
a game Brisbane just have to win that. They are
a strong clearance team, aren't they Brisbane and North Melbourne.
Obviously under a new coach, their form has been pretty promising.

(39:33):
I would have thought this year Griffin log I've really
liked his season so far is taken or one of
the best in the competition for intercept marks and yeah
Brank number one in the club across a number of
measurements this year already, so good pickup since coming across
from Freemantle. Essenon Melbourne is an interesting game. Brent Drake's

(39:54):
Jake Stringer ten shots to goal last.

Speaker 2 (39:56):
Week and the big big barrel too, which was good
to see. I can't say I'm winning today though, Brownie
against me, can't.

Speaker 4 (40:03):
I give them a sneaky chance.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
Yeah, okay, we're going to gain well, no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
But my son says, you give everyone a sinking chance
against Melbourne. I think I'm scart from the twenty one
Grand Final.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
No doubt. And then your dog is tonight. It's a
double header at the Adelaide over. How's this going to work?

Speaker 4 (40:19):
So well?

Speaker 3 (40:20):
They need to hold a Leo Lear the Dogs and
probably if they can engage Norton with him one on
one and not allow Leo Lear to be freed up
because he's I think this number two play under competition
for intercept possessions in intercept marks. The Dogs have got
a pretty good record in South Australia Brent one four
of the last six.

Speaker 4 (40:39):
It sneaks up on you. I think the Dogs get
it done.

Speaker 2 (40:41):
Okay again, staggered by that. Tomorrow another double header at
the Adelaide OBLL. First up it is Geelong and West Coast.
Geelong will win that one comfortably and then we've got
Collingwood Securita. What if everyone's saying this year go back
to the MCG this game, wouldn't that just defeat the
whole There's been some stupid comments on social media this week.

Speaker 4 (41:03):
I'll tell you idiotic comments.

Speaker 2 (41:05):
The whole purpose of the old thing to go over
there for.

Speaker 3 (41:08):
It's exciting that it's the final match of gatheround and
the match of the round, no doubt about that. Collingwood
versus s and Kilda and Sin Kilda g you couldn't
deny them undefeated so far. I think they'll be right
in this game for a long period. Collingwood just for
mine g WS and Hawthorne.

Speaker 2 (41:26):
Brent, yeah, Gws, I think that one hold on were
good early last week when they against the Cats. But
you just feel that teams are going to steamroll and
like that through the year. Given how young they are,
they'll they'll have bits and bobs where they're good, but
they'll probably run out a bit of a puff. The Hawks,
I reckon and GWS will win that game comfortably.

Speaker 4 (41:46):
Yes, I'm with you there, GWS for mine.

Speaker 2 (41:48):
That's our AFL rappers. Don't go anywhere, not too far away.
Jim Cassidy joins us in the studio to tome Melbourne
Cup winning Jockey.

Speaker 7 (41:54):
It up.

Speaker 2 (41:55):
Next, we're turning our focus to basketball when Christine Finnigan,
the co CEO of The Jack Jump, joins us here
to talk about everything basketball, including a big Christmas Day
clash coming up at my State Bank Arena. That is
next on the water Boys doing it all thanks to
Tasmak right across Tasmania. They are your local Cobota dealer.
This is the water Boys right across Tasmania. You are

(42:17):
listening to the water Boys with Brent cost Eelo and
Cam Brown for your Saturday morning. We're switching our focus
to basketball now. Huge news yesterday with the announcement by
the NBL that the Jack Jampers will host a Christmas
Day game here in Tasmania December twenty five, obviously five

(42:37):
point thirty start at my State Bank Arena against the
Southeast Melbourne Phoenix. And joining us on the line now
to chat about that and all things Jack Jumpers is
the co CEO, Christine Finnigan. Welcome to the water Boys, Christine.

Speaker 8 (42:49):
Thanks Brent, great to be here.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
Lovely to talk to you. You must be absolutely excited
about this. What a concept to bring to Tasmania, Little
old Tazzy hey hosting a Christmas Day basketball again. Who
would have thought?

Speaker 6 (43:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (43:01):
Look, isn't it super exciting one that they're expanding the
Christmas Day concept that they chose us to host it,
And I think it's a real compliment tonight only the
jack Numpers, but to Tasmania and the way they've got
behind the team that the broadcaster said that they wanted
to bring the game here.

Speaker 2 (43:18):
I must admit I wasn't sold on Christmas Day in
the past, but now it's here and we've got this
and I know you said yesterday that you want to
try and grab this and move forward with it as well.
It is pretty exciting, isn't it. That this could be
a permanent fixture for all goes.

Speaker 8 (43:31):
Well, look, I do think you only get one opportunity
to say yes or no at these type of events.
So when we considered all of that, we did think
that this is the opportunity to be something that's fully
embedded into the NBA calendar for many years to come.
And to think that we could own this space was
pretty exciting for us and one of the big reasons

(43:52):
that we said death.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
And you've got lots of initiatives too. We know the
Jack Jumbazoo, that stuff really well. But just tell us
about some of the things you got planned.

Speaker 1 (44:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (44:01):
Look, I was actually in discussions at the MBO yesterday
afternoon about bringing a Christmas kit to life in terms
of a Christmas jersey and the whole playing uniform, something
very similar to what we probably do around our fuel games.
So it will be exciting in terms of all the
activity as well that we put into the arena. We're
going to make this a real Christmas spectacular. And you know,

(44:23):
all the staff are on board. My State Bank arena
totally on board, and their staff are also very excited,
So it really will be a Christmas spectacle.

Speaker 3 (44:33):
Christine Finnegan, the Tasman and Jack Jumpers Coco this morning
joining us on the water Boys. Christine, it's came here.
I just wanted to ask you about free agency. Obviously,
you know it's a topical at the moment, but not
a lot coming out of the Jack Jumpers. What are
the plans and do you expect to have any announcements
in the next couple of weeks?

Speaker 8 (44:52):
Yeah, Keim, absolutely, And as I've said yesterday and again
throughout the week, we understand that people are getting frusted
that we haven't made announcements, but they're certainly coming. We've
been sort of working very diligently in the background to
make sure we're securing the types of players we need
and want, and those discussions have been very fruitful. And

(45:12):
we'll start by announcing our first one early next week.
It could be as early as Monday, and then we'll
have other announcements to follow. But absolutely, and I say
this often, we're not a team or a club that
goes out to talk about things that might happen. We'd
rather just walk the walk and make sure they are happening.
So when we announce our contracts, that'll be because being

(45:35):
stry and we're.

Speaker 5 (45:36):
Ready to go.

Speaker 3 (45:37):
And Christine was Tanner Kreb, someone that was on the
radar for the jack Jumpers, read with interested he sign
with Melbourne United. We know he's got that connection with
his dad, Dan, a decorated player down here in Tazzy basketball.

Speaker 4 (45:50):
But yeah, we in the mix for Tannor Absolutely.

Speaker 8 (45:54):
Yeah, we definitely had discussions and it would be a
great story. You mean to have a Tasmanian play for us,
But at the end of the day, we've got to
be fiscally responsible to and Tanner was after a fairly
long term contract and there are a couple of clubs
chasing and obviously his pride kept going up along the way.
So we have to know our limits and we have
to know when we're putting our best effort and it's

(46:15):
time to walk away. And we made that decision with
Tanner Christine.

Speaker 2 (46:19):
A lot of people obviously interested in resigning Milton Doyle
and the coach has spoken really positively about that. In
the position that we're in at the moment with Milton,
but you're confident that'll get done at some point.

Speaker 8 (46:32):
Absolutely, I am very confident about that. We're letting Milton
go and enjoy step and in Europe, and we've been
in regular discussions with his manager. What I will say
is Milton and his family absolutely loved their time in Tasmania.
They really found a home away from home here and
I know that he was really keen to see if
he could come back, not not even for one maybe

(46:52):
for a longer term. So we're keeping working on that
in the background, and all our discussions are being positive.

Speaker 2 (47:00):
And how's the coach. I haven't seen him for a
little while. He's been around the state though he's off
home soon. How's his health and temper at the moment, Ah,
he's great.

Speaker 8 (47:09):
You know, his energy that he brings to this club
is unbelievable. And the fact that he's been in his
car pretty much every weekend going up to the north
and the north of the state. He's been visiting schools
and attending assemblies. He's been at all the junior basketball sixteens,
and you know, he really does get out there and
meet the people. And I bet himself into Tasmania. I mean,

(47:31):
this is his happy place. He loves being here and
he loves to be considered an honorary Tasmanian and I
think he does an enormous job in that space.

Speaker 4 (47:41):
And Christine, last one from me. Any progression on the
sale of the club.

Speaker 3 (47:45):
We know that's obviously been in the media in the
last couple of months and a potential timeline on that one, yeah, Cay.

Speaker 8 (47:52):
Look, I've been really heavily involved in this process right
from the start when Larry made it clear that he
wanted to sell the club, myself and direct involved and
we've really helped him put all the paperwork together and
I'm pleased to say that that perspectives is now ready
and it's been distributed to interested parties, not just here
in Tasmania, but nationally and internationally, and there is there

(48:14):
is a lot of interest in the club, and look,
there's a lot of interest in the NBL at the moment.
And you know, one of the great things about when
Mary tells his club is the money goes back into
the NBL coffers to help expand the game, and that
can only be good for Tasmania because it means that
we're reaching into broader markets once once a game he's
expanded and he's been very clear about his air mission

(48:35):
to take the NBL to Asia, so once again that
gives us new markets to take the brand of.

Speaker 2 (48:41):
Tasmania and obviously not cheap to buy a basketball team, Christine,
But you're confidence there's definitely some tazzy people in the
mix to try and keep this team local as well.

Speaker 4 (48:52):
Well.

Speaker 8 (48:52):
Look, absolutely they've shown a lot of interest. There's obviously,
you know, hopefully a consortium or two that will get
together and hopefully take a majority share, so it really
stays in Tasmanian hands. And look, I've had a lot
of discussions with many people over the last six weeks.
Larry was obviously in town last week. He also had

(49:12):
some one on one meetings and I know the outcome
of those meetings has been very positive. So look, you know,
like anything, we've just all got to bite our time
and see what happens. But I'm very very confident that
the Tasmanian jack Jumpers will go into very responsible hands
in the not so distance future.

Speaker 2 (49:31):
Well came up the great work. You got the new
role as well, as we said co CEO with Joiki
since Simon brook Us left, and no doubt hopefully get it.
You get some time off soon once all this.

Speaker 8 (49:41):
Is done or well, you know, we've retained our former
roles as well. So we are pretty busy at the moment.
But you know what, we love what we do and
it's really not work. It's just it's just great fun
and we love what we do for the people of Tasmania.
So we're going to keep working hard, keep keep trying
to improve our products. You get to work on Christmas
Day too, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (50:03):
Looking forward to it, can't wait. It's going to be.
It really will be. It to be a special day
and yeah, a really historic one for Tasbania, so I
can't wait for it. It'd be awesome. Okay, the great work, Christine.
Really appreciate your time this morning on the water Boys
and bring us up to date with everything happening with
the jack Jumpers. Thanks guys, very good Christine fitting and
doing a great job as the co CEO with Chivers

(50:24):
of the jack Jumpers. And exciting announcement yesterday just for punting.
Christmas Day basketball coming to my State Bank Arena later
this year. Can't wait for it. Can't wait for the
rest of the show as well. Not too far away
we announce the next winner of our good Sport Award.
But up next live in the studio is two time
Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jimmy Cassidy. Can't wait to talk
to Jimmy next here on the water Boys right across
Tasmania thanks to taz Mak, your local Cabota.

Speaker 4 (50:45):
Dealers, The water Boys.

Speaker 2 (50:50):
Thanks to tas Mak, your local Cabota dealer. It is
the water Boys for your Saturday Morning with Brent Costello
and Cam Brown and we are joined by a racing
royalty in the studio. Now Brown a man that's had
more than one hundred Group one winners. He's won a
couple of Melbourne Carps, of cocks, played a Corfield Cup.
He's done it all. Jimmy Cassidy, Welcome to the water Boys.
Great to see you, fantastic to be down here in Hobart. Boys,

(51:11):
fantastic mates. So you're here for a speaking engagement tonight,
Jimmy Cassidy up close and uncensored, So we'll ask you
about that a little bit later as well. But how
are you going? What are you doing with yourself at
the moment.

Speaker 7 (51:22):
Yeah, look, it's been fantastic. I was just saying to
the boys, eight years since I won my last Group one,
which is all Age Steak stayed in Sydney on dissident.
So since I've retired, I've obviously been highly involved with
lab breaks and betting agency and getting around Australia and
up to Wella springs for the Cup in the fortnite,
so things are really good.

Speaker 2 (51:42):
You still love it as much as ever? The race?

Speaker 7 (51:44):
Oh yeah, look love it. I don't obviously do as
much form as I used to when I was riding,
not that I've done a lot when I was writing,
but since I've retired, I've always got someone to do
a little bit of form and find a few winners
for the team, but still involved in the racing, do.

Speaker 4 (51:58):
A little bit.

Speaker 7 (51:59):
In Sydney. We're gimming with the horses, so the interest
is still there and still loving it.

Speaker 2 (52:03):
I know Cam's came to ask you about it a
couple of your horses in a minute, But as an
overall look back at your career now you had time
to reflect on and I suppose you must be pretty
pleased what you're able to get done.

Speaker 7 (52:14):
Yeah, look, you start off when you obviously I started
leaving home when I was eleven and retired from racing
at fifty three. So what I enjoyed the success, Hall
of fame, things like that, you don't really put that
in the back of your mind when you kick off.
But to achieve what I'd done, obviously, it's always been
a team effort, not just Jimbo on his own or

(52:35):
the pump.

Speaker 4 (52:37):
I've enjoyed it.

Speaker 7 (52:38):
It's been great. It's taken me to places I never
thought i'd get, obviously after winning a couple of Cups
and the Group ones and things. But the time in
racing was outstanding.

Speaker 4 (52:46):
I loved it.

Speaker 7 (52:47):
I used to go to work and put on the
different thinking cap to go there and have fun and
enjoy it and still compete at the highest level.

Speaker 3 (52:55):
And Jimmy even making them move across the Australia from
New Zealand. Can you talk because through that and what
was involved in that, was that for greater opportunity?

Speaker 7 (53:04):
Yeah, Well, the opportunity come up after I won the
Melbourne Cup on Kiwi and then we had bib La Point.
Robert Sankster, a couple of the biggest names in world racing,
decided to set up a stable coup Nearby Lodge in Sydney,
which was to The aim was to take on Tommy Smith,
who had been dominated Sydney racing for thirty five years,

(53:24):
won the premiership thirty five years straight. So these successful
businessmen got their heads together and said let's take on
the best and they did and we were able to
knock TJ off in our first year in eighty five,
so that was a good feather in the cap and
that really got things rolling in Sydney. So the opportunity
was there. The Aussie dollar was a lot stronger than
that key we doll like, so that didn't take much convincing,

(53:46):
but look loved it. The opportunity was there, and it's
like everything, when they're there, you've got to make the
most of them. And I was lucky enough to have
good people behind me and made it very successful.

Speaker 3 (53:58):
I reckon if you'd ask people the U fifty Melbourne
Cups and you know the top three or four moost
memorable once Kiwi would be that in nineteen eighty three
where it seemed that you came from the clouds and
almost so. I remember watching the race and thinking that
it was done and dusted and he just flew down
the outside. They talk about the clock tower in the
Melbourne Club. Is that the point when you were writing

(54:20):
and thought, okay, cup is a chance here or not?

Speaker 7 (54:23):
Yeah? Look for sure, I was lucky. Prior to key
we coming to the Cup. I had a great trainer
in New Zealand called Eric Temperton who won the Melbourne
Cup with Silver Night and ridden by one of our
great trainers in New Zealand and Bruce Marsh. So I
said to Eric Temperton prior to coming to Melbourne, I said,
can you give me a tip about the cup? He said,
if you're somewhere near them at the clock tower on

(54:43):
Kiw within two links, he said, you'll win the cup,
pump and the rest was history. I was within probably
two and a half lengths of them at the clock
tower and he got away in one by a length
and a half, so amazing feeling. The clock tower has
always been a great thing for me at Flemington. You can,
i'd patient, or if you're on a leader, you've got
the clock tower in your site and you think you

(55:04):
just got to cuddle then to the clock tower and
then go for home and yeah. Look, it was a
great landmark for me over the many years at Flymingtoun.

Speaker 3 (55:11):
I remember it clearly because my dad backed it and
he also won on the sweep at work, so it's a.

Speaker 4 (55:16):
Famous one in our household.

Speaker 3 (55:17):
But can I actually about Right and Power too, Jimmy
and Alo two famous races that you had with them.
But in contrast really the Melbourne Cup, which was the
really close finish with the Remus from memory, and then
the following year was the Cox Plate, and I remember
there was a lot of talk that the only way
to beat because I think it was a raging red
hot favourite, but the only way to beat marightin Power

(55:38):
was to try and pocket him in and make it
really difficult. And you just went bang and thought I'll
go and go to way. I think it was a
race record for memory.

Speaker 2 (55:45):
If I catch it all that yeng h, you've got
it down, Pat.

Speaker 7 (55:48):
I actually it was quite funny Coxplate day and after
Might and Power was so devastating in the Corefield Cup
and then he's won by a lip in the Melbourne Cup,
and then to go back a year later for the
Coxplate was the first I've been on a racecourse and
seen signs out the front full full house, forty thousand
people at Mooney Valley that day I won the bars

(56:09):
on a horse called Mossman and I lead on him
and wrote him to run a record. Well, he broke
the track records three races later before the Cox Plate,
and I said to Jack Denham, I said, I'm going
to lead it all costs. I said, if I leave
the coxplate, I win. And I rode him to run
a record, and I think he nearly broke a minute
for his last thousand, and I remember the great call

(56:31):
pumper dictates the Cox plate and a thousand from home,
I was just if I could put my hand up
and said to the people, get him the queue, go
and get your tickets, because he was home.

Speaker 4 (56:42):
Is he the best horse you'd look?

Speaker 7 (56:44):
I think for the statue of a horse, his confirmation,
his strength, he's builled, He was phenomenal. He loved to
hide ball in front and that was his great aptitude.
You could ride him to run time. And I would
a lot of times in my head say to me,
make it a chase, not a race. And he was
able to do it so many times.

Speaker 2 (57:04):
The Great Jimmy Cassidy's our guests in the studio on
the water Boys this morning, up close and uncensored tonight
at Ludbrooks Park, Elwick. Jimmy, everything's on the table. I
guess if it's uncensored jockey Tape's obviously a big part
of your story as well. He comfortable talking about that
part of your life.

Speaker 7 (57:21):
Yeah, one hundred percent. It's gone and dusted. But at
the time it was it was hard. It was I
think Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch owned the two papers
in Sydney and I was front, back middle for about
two and a half weeks, so it was quite nice
to take the two probably richest men in the world
at the time off the front page and I was there.

(57:41):
Tommy Smith always said to me, he said, Sonny, He said,
it doesn't matter if you're in the paper every day,
whether it's good or bad. He said, if you had
to pay for it, he said, you'd need thirty live times.
I had thirty live times in about a week, I think,
gave the jockey's tapes. But it was something I handled,
I thought reasonably well. It was tough little things. I
had to take my kids out of private schools and

(58:02):
get rid of cars, and so I went from the
top to the bottom in a matter of probably about
seventy two hours. And then the focus was coming back
and getting back on top, which I was able to
do with the great Mindain power in ninety seven. But
I thought the whole jockey's tape thing was a little
bit of a kabacle. I thought personally it was attacked

(58:25):
probably a little bit in the wrong way. Yes, I
was accused and suspended or disqualified for tipping and bedding.
I think that come out many more years before the
Pump started riding, and I think it will still be there,
the Pump when I've gone and dusted. But a great
time in my life. In one respect, it opened a
lot of eyes and it gives you a chance to

(58:46):
see who supports you through tough times. And yeah, I
was able to bounce back and keep the ball rolling
later in life.

Speaker 2 (58:53):
PUMPA where does it come from? Can you tell us
the backstory of the nicknamee?

Speaker 7 (58:57):
Yeah, Well she was a good sort that There was
a pressman that was the editor for the Daily Telegraph,
Grilenn Robins, and I'd ridden three winners in at rose
Hill Stay and the last one I was in a
tight finish and I was able to lift it to win.
And that's where the nickname Pumper come in. And it's

(59:17):
stuck and I started giving it a right straight away.
Free publicity is great publicity and everyone knows Jimbo is
the pump now.

Speaker 2 (59:25):
So it's been great, fantastic. It's great to have you here.

Speaker 4 (59:28):
Mate.

Speaker 2 (59:28):
You're also here as well with Steve Hawkins, who's going
to interview you tonight. Steve. Welcome to the studio.

Speaker 4 (59:34):
And it's a great idea.

Speaker 9 (59:36):
We've done a few of these shows together and I
think if people come along might be disappointed.

Speaker 4 (59:40):
He tells the truth.

Speaker 9 (59:41):
There's no vs in what he says.

Speaker 4 (59:43):
To be good.

Speaker 2 (59:44):
Well, you got to tell you your questions ready made
or you saw more off the cuff.

Speaker 9 (59:47):
We know each other pretty well. We go away together
and often stayed the same in the same apartment. We
have breakfast together, and you know, we talk about this.
I sort of know his story is better if I
don't have any notes. But I think every time we
do a story, though, there's always something that you know,
you brought up a few things about the Kiwi stuff.
We'reked about Kiwi yesterday to function and look, we tell
that whole story. We tell the might and power story.
The rough Habits story is great still in the New

(01:00:08):
Zealand story. You know about him and he's great ride
and the strabbrow from that bad ally went back to
the fence and got up on the inside and won.
And you know, just Jimmy's sort of really transparent, you
know what I mean. He tells it how it is
and that's what worth we like about it.

Speaker 2 (01:00:21):
Fantastic. Well it's happening tonight, Saturday fifteenth of April, of course,
six fifteen to nine fifteen lad Brokes Park, Elwick. Jimmy
Cassidy up close and uncensored. So good to have you
in the studio, guys, Thanks so much for coming in
and all the best for the show tonight.

Speaker 9 (01:00:33):
Yeah, thanks guys, Thank you boys.

Speaker 4 (01:00:35):
Clearly cluck the pump.

Speaker 1 (01:00:36):
We'll be back.

Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
Jimmy Cassidy joining us in the studio on the water Boys.

It could be a player, a coach, a volunteer, anyone

(01:01:57):
doing a wonderful job in a local sporting community. Thought
it'd be nice to go through some of the big
games happening across Tasmania today. Let's start up on the
Northwest Coast Brannie. Game of the round for me in
the NWFL is Wined and Olguston third versus fifth in
the latter is very early in the season, of course,
but that should be a beauty this afternoon. And the

(01:02:17):
women this morning underway at nine am. Penguin second place.
Penguin coming up against the Trobe who's in fourth SFL.
We've got a restart. We're not a restart, but these
two teams missed the opening round last weekend Surrel and
of course signet and they get to play today against
each other as well.

Speaker 4 (01:02:35):
So good luck to Mota mon One.

Speaker 3 (01:02:36):
Simon Harris is helping out down there as any assistant coaches.

Speaker 4 (01:02:40):
It's a real great descene back and footy.

Speaker 2 (01:02:42):
And the game of the round though for me is
Dodgers Ferry versus Linda's Fan at Shark Park we know
Linda's fan went through the whole season undefeed last year,
had an opening round loss last weekend against Humanville, so
the two blueres we're looking to bounce back. The women's
comp begins today as well, so three divisions that'll be
exciting to keep an eye as well. The NTFA today
he'll Dela Rain's probably the game of the round at
the Hillwood Recreational Reserve and the women's comp in the

(01:03:04):
NTERFA begins today as well, So good luck to everyone
playing footy today. Netball still on a break, they're back
in a week or so. It's time, I think the NPL.
Last night we mentioned that Golnake had a one new
win over South Hobart. A big game today is at
Buckby Motors Park at four forty five, Lonnie City hosting
kingbra And in the WSL Lonnie United and South Hobart

(01:03:25):
game in the round for ME one v two Top
of the Table clash at Birch Avenue from two o'clock tomorrow.
Hockey is in an unusual spot. If we said last week,
they're playing a few midweek games. Not every club involved
in those midweek games on a weekly basis, but oh
and Northwest Grades. They're playing on Tuesday night men to
six thirty women eight o'clock, so looking forward to that.
And I want to give a shout out to to
the Tasmania Titans mixed to reserve netball team made it

(01:03:48):
to the Grand final in Perth today, so good luck
to everyone involved in that. And you're heading north to
to watch the Devils today they take on the Eastern
Ranges that you test on him.

Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
They do a double head of the girls or actually
playing before that and Georgia Clark out for the girls
with concussion and the men's Callen and Cobby mkirche are
both out with the a full academy, so an opportunity
for a couple of players. It'll get their first game
today for the Devils, which is exciting. Eastern Rangers is
a pretty good team, so best of luck to both

(01:04:18):
the boys and the girls Devil's teams today.

Speaker 2 (01:04:21):
Now if you want to catch the show, if you
missed any of it it Spotify can get us on Spotify.
You posted something there, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio is probably the
best way you get it all. Well, it's a part
of the brand camp. You need to get our show
out there. So you can catch up any time, any
pace and just listen to us all again, audible chocolate,

(01:04:41):

the water Boys. Look forward to your company and we'll
