Speaker 1 (00:00):
No matter what they're spied, where it's playing, all the
teams behind it, We've got it.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
This is the water Boys, thanks to Tasmac, Devin Pord, Montston,
Bridgewater and Smifton, your local Kaboda dealer.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Good morning everyone, Welcome to the water Boys for another
super Saturday of sport.
Speaker 4 (00:18):
Brent Cosselo with you this morning alongside Cam Brown.
Speaker 5 (00:21):
Gooday, Brannie, Good morning Brent. A super Saturday of sport,
including a game at Blunchedon Arena too. Yes, versus Port Adelaide,
first game in Hobart for the season in the AFL.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Looking forward to previewing that later in the show.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
But we had a couple of games last night, a
little bit unusual having two games on a Friday and night.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
Run us through and Bran actually, why was that?
Speaker 5 (00:41):
Brin? Can you explain you're overall things fixturing in the AFL.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Well, there's it's Mother's Day on Sunday, of course, and
a big shout out to all the mums out there.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
We wish you all the best for Sunday, and.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
We'll get to that later in the show too, branniecause
I know you want to. We like to do that
traditionally that we give a shout out to our the.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Mother's close to us.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
And I think there's two games on Sunday instead of
three this weekend, so they've gone the double up on
the Friday night.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
But I don't like it.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
I mean, why do we have to have two games overlapping?
And even if you do want the two games on
a Friday night have even later starting Perth.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
I know that sucks for the Eastern States.
Speaker 5 (01:13):
I think that's the trick. Like you'd you'd start the
game last night inn maybe six thirty even yeah, and
the game in Western straight nine thirty or something run.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Happy exactly exactly, particularly for.
Speaker 5 (01:26):
The live viewers in Western Australia. But the two games
last night, Brent, the Tigers sixteen six one hundred and
two defeated the Cats eleven twelve seventy eight Dustin Martin
with four goals. Did you the tickets last night?
Speaker 6 (01:39):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:39):
I didn't, Did you can?
Speaker 5 (01:40):
I probably lead you into that anyway. West Coast Gold Coast.
Unfortunately for the West Coast g all sorts of trouble
over there six seven forty three. They were thumped in
the end to Gold Coast sixteen seventeen one hundred and
thirteen Max King with four goals. A couple of games
in their NRL last night. What did I say?
Speaker 4 (01:59):
He said, as the place.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
And the NRL the Bulldogs twelve, the Warriors twenty four
and Penrith forty eight thump the Roosters four. So Penrith
and probably the Broncos of the standout team's early days
in the NRL ladder at the moment.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Melbourne Storm very good too.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Back on Thursday night, win didn't I did against the
exactly right? The A League last weight into the semifinals
and the two legs of course the semi finals. So
the first one last night Sydney and Melbourne City played
a one all draw in the first legs.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
They met again next Friday night.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
The other two teams go head to head tonight in
the first semifinal of their particular legs as well.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
So things are getting to crunch time in the A League.
Plenty to get through.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
On the show this morning, Brownie, big news yesterday. As
far as political life in Tasmania goes, I want to
get your take on all that and what it means
for Tasmania's AFL pushing the week that was that's coming
up next also This Morning Basketball with Sarah Reveal the
long sess and Tornado's head coach. They take on Geelong
Tonight Crickets as well selling Am Beams. The cricket has Maney,
(03:07):
a high performance manager will join us because they announced
both contracts for the men's and women's teams this week.
For the Tasmanian Tigers for next season. Questions without Notice
is back as well. And what about the second out
of this morning camp.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
Yeah, Jordan Russell, the North Melbourne Football Club assistant coach
is going to be joining her headers ahead of at
the big game against Portlai Port Adelaide and Luke Kelly,
assistant coach of Port Adelaide, will be joining us straight
after Jordan Russell, so they'll be good AFL team. We're
going to discuss a few things. We've got to touch
on your West Coast Eagles when we skim over that.
All sorts of trouble over there. The good Sport Award too.
(03:42):
The NBA Finals at the moment. Unfortunately for the Phoenix
Suns and jack Landale they were knocked out yesterday by
the Denver Nuggets. I know you think will go all
the way and win the NBA Championship said that supercars
coming up bone there this time.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Week will be all over that.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Towards the end of the show as well, Cam, we'll
give us his predictions for to be a big weekend
at Simmons Plans. That's all to come for you this
morning on the water Boys doing it all thanks to
our great friends at Tasmac, your local Caboda dealer. Good morning,
this is the water Boys thanks to Tasmak, your local
Cobota dealer. It is the water Boys for here Saturday morning.
(04:19):
Brencos Elo and Cam Brown with reflecting on.
Speaker 7 (04:22):
Scot from the past seven days, here's the water Boys week.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
It was now the big week locally, nationally and internationally.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Can let's start here at home because yesterday we saw
a big day in local politics with two Tasbanian liberals
quitting the party and opting to become independence John Tucker
and Lara Alexander. Of course, what did you make of
that and what do you think more importantly from a
sporting perspective, because that's what we focus on our show.
Does it mean for Tasbania's AFL push because they are
(04:52):
those two particularly have pulled back from the liberals due
in part to the stadium push for the AFL.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Well I spoke about a lack of transparency, didn't they
around the proposed Macquarie Point stadium. So they've clearly stepped
away from that decision. They're both in the north of
the state so probably felt a little bit compromised in
how they were representing their members up there, their local
members in particular. So it's going to be really interesting,
bren It's not a great look, is it, first and
(05:21):
foremost on the mainland when we're trying to get this
stadium when we haven't gotten This is something that Tim
Lane said back probably a couple of weeks ago with
the impending announcement, that unfortunately we didn't have political alignment
all the way through, and we thought that was between
the three parties, but we didn't necessarily predict that it
was going to be a division with the NAWN party.
(05:42):
So it's a real concern what it means. I read
with interest that Gil mcgloughlin doesn't think that's going to
affect the stadium in any way, shape or form. I
don't know whether you've come across his comments, but he
believes it will go regardless of changes in the government
and they've got a binding agreement, so in his eyes,
(06:04):
it's full steam ahead.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
That's what I was about to say.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Obviously, the money's been committed by the federal government. Obviously
Jerry Rockley has pushed it really hard. There is that
binding agreement in place, so I'm not sure what would change,
but far from me being a political expert, but watch
this space because obviously it's a spicy thing to happen,
and ice.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
Is a good word. And clearly those two departed members
that you mentioned in Laura Alexander and John Tucker, there
was a lack of from their perspective, a lack of
consultation and connection with this whole decision, and as backbench
as they didn't feel like they'd been brought along for
the journey.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Watch this space is going to be very, very as
I say, spicy week and weeks coming up in state
politics has noted about that. As we mentioned, we've got
something Ambeams coming up on the show a little later
to talk about. Cricket has money contracts for next season,
but interestingly Matt Wade has received contract for next season.
We thought he might have taken off to the T
twenty circuit as he did in the back half of
(07:05):
the Sheffield Shield season this year.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Were you surprised by that?
Speaker 5 (07:10):
Possibly? Yeah, possibly, I guess when you mentioned there that
he stepped away from the Tasmanian Sheffield Chield team for
a couple of weeks there you thought, well, okay, perhaps
he's positioning his career post more so in the twenty
twenty format and in the national franchises, which was going
to come at the expense of his first class cricket
with Tasmania, and maybe step away from that, which hasn't
(07:33):
been the case. But I mean the great thing, he's
clearly got a lot of very good cricket ahead of him.
I would have thought it at the highest level playing
domestically for Tasmania. So that's a I believe a terrific
result for the squad. The main changes there, Brent, just
to bring us up to speed, weren't there was Jackson
Byrd unfortunately leaving for a two year off. I've better
(07:54):
career opportunities. We're hearing to go to New South Wales.
We've also lost Ben McDermot and Peters yep. The other
major changes coming in just from mommy Pat Dooley, who
had some domestic experience with Queensland in the back end
of last year. We know he was the staff of
the Big Bash last year, and a couple of rookies
have been promoted in Freeman and oen.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Yep I have fanned and obviously Jake weather Or comes
into from south.
Speaker 5 (08:18):
Left handed opener Bret.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Interesting because the two openers did really well for us
this year. It did as well in Warden Jules.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
So lasts out about that a little bit later in
the show. Interesting too, Josh for Archer.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Broken down again troublesome elbow injuries, had back injuries too
in the past as well. So not great on the
cusp of the Ashes, which isn't too far away at all.
Speaker 5 (08:41):
I don't know what you like with Footybread, but sometimes,
and I don't mean this in any disregard to someone
that's got injured, but when you're playing against a team
and you'll find out that this particular player is out injured,
you sort of go, that's a good result for us.
We don't have to play against Dangerfield last night for
you Richmond, But I don't know about you, but with
the Ash I have a different take. You actually want
(09:01):
Joss Archer playing just because of the year, expectation and
what it was a couple of years ago. I was
back in twenty nineteen and it was just must view
television for cricket lover So we want to see the
best cricketers playing against each other. So let's hope he
gets back for the sake of the series.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Absolutely couldn't agree more with that. Now, what did you
make of the Jacob van Royan situation during the way that.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
Sort of stuff, I'll go to It bores me, I'll
be honest. I just think some.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
People love it. Don't know.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
The RP and the Tribune, we can't stand it, the
situation and the saturation in the media with some of
those tribunal decisions and match review panels. But I believe
they feel got it wrong. I believe in the word
he should be playing.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
And he is.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
So that was all sorted out as it should have
been later in a week. Just took a little while
to get there. Of course, what about to just finally
with footy, the assistant coaches for the Rep game coming
up later this year have been announced, so we obviously
knew Maverick Weller was going to coach the Map and
he's going to be ably assisted by Trent Bormler, Adam
(10:11):
Bester of course from North Hobart, and Aaron corneelis as well,
So nice little coaching structure there for the men's team
and for the women's of course Dev Reynolds the head coach,
and she'll be assisted by Richard Douglas, Jodie Maler and
Andy Smith. So looking forward to State footy being back
later this year, Brandy can't wait for it.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
July one. That game is Brent at North overt Oval
men's and women's doubleheader, so be a fantastic showcase of
all things Tasmania and Queensland representative football.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
It will.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Indeed, we've got a lot to showcase too. For the
rest of the show this morning and our too, we're
fully focused on footy, with Port Adelaide and North Melburne
going head to head at Blunston Arena at the start, and.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
And we'll talk to both camps ahead of the big game.
Later this hour.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
We're going to do questions without notice and talk cricket
with Sally am Beams. But up next we switch our
focus to basketball when lon Seston Tornadoes head coach Sarah
Reville joins us on the water Boys doing it all
thanks to Tasmac, your local Caboda dealer.
Speaker 8 (11:06):
This he's the water Boys.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Thanks to Tasmac, your local Coboda dealer. It is the
water Boys with Brent Costello and Cam Brown. On this
Saturday morning, the thirteenth of May twenty twenty three.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
It's time to shoot some hoops as the water Boys
talk all things basketball.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Time to turn our attention to NBL one and a
massive game coming up for the long Seston Tornadoes at
Elfin tonight against Geelong United. Yes not the Geelong Supercats anymore.
Geelong United. And joining us on the line how to
have a chat about it is the head coach of
the Tornado, Sarah Reville.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
Welcome back to the show.
Speaker 9 (11:39):
Sarah, thank you very much, good to be here.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Nice to talk to you.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Big game for your team tonight, isn't it a three win,
five loss start to the season. So important to try
and get back to scroing the ledger.
Speaker 10 (11:52):
I guess for you guys, absolutely like this game is
really critical for us in terms of our position and
you know, with our goals make top eight and make finals, so.
Speaker 9 (12:03):
It will be a big game. It's also a big
game forty long as well, and obviously they had a
pretty good win last night, although really came back and
almost picked them at the post. So yeah, we're really
looking forward to it. We feel a lot. We're ready
and it'll be gritty and it'll be tough and we're
hoping to get them win.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Yes, a point win for Gelong over the Chargers last
night and some good news for your team. You get
Killy frolling back tonight who missed last weekend on Foever
three by three duties over in Israel, So that's a
handy inclusion for your team.
Speaker 9 (12:36):
Yeah, we're obviously we without Soles there, just not only
for her ability to you know, be an exceptional player
of the game. You know, she's also our leader on
the court, so having her come back in for this
game is really important and you know we're outside without her,
we know that. So yeah, she'll play a big game
(12:58):
and a big part in what we do and how
we do night. So you're really happy that.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
She's home and Sarah, it's cam here. We know obviously
with sporting organizations it's very rare that you continue with
the same team and squad in the following year. And
we know that you lost Kelsey Griffin last year. How
have you been able to, I guess cover her loss
this season?
Speaker 9 (13:19):
Yeah, well, I mean, I guess the reality of that
is that we haven't. We're still hoping that Kels will
come back at some point in the season. You know,
she has to play her first game before the last
nine are played, so she's still rehabing. Still not a
no from her, So you know, we finger's cost and
we're in her ear all the time, and you know
(13:40):
she's doing really well, but she's also needs to put
her body first. So we're still hopeful that she will
be back in. But yet at this point in time,
we I mean, I don't know that you can replace
Kelsey Griffin. She's an absolute legend and the food.
Speaker 6 (13:53):
Star of the game.
Speaker 9 (13:53):
So yeah, fingers cross that you've still come back in.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Talking to Long System Tornado's head coach Sarah v this
morning on the water Boys, Sah, you've been coaching for
a while nowt the Tornadoes, and I guess your philosophy,
the management style and the tactical approach. Has that changed
during your tenure as coach with more experience or have
you have you remained fairly stable? I guess to those
(14:18):
call beliefs when you were first appointed.
Speaker 9 (14:20):
Yeah, well I think I'm definitely stable to the core
beliefs of why we exist or tornados exist, which is
to provide a pathway for the young local women of Catty,
you know, regardless of where they are, and also to
help them grow, not only on course, and that's why
we recruit players like Kelsey and Keeley because you know,
(14:41):
they teach them so much just by playing with them.
You can't learn that from practice. But what my philosophy
is in terms of growing young girls so that they
can actually go away and function at college as young adults.
So there's lots of learning. They come out as you know,
come out of school a sixteen, seventeen and even eighteen
(15:01):
year old and they have to learn how to be
responsible and resilient and learn all those things. And you
know we provide that and we're really proud of what
we do. So in terms of tactical stuff, absolutely, you know,
playing at this level, second highest level in Australia, we've
all learned some lessons. So you know, I continue to
go as a coach, but in terms of what I
believe and what we suspect, still are made the.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
Same as we said Sarah three win five lost starts
of the season, but no Tolough, no Griffin so far
this season. Anyway, where do you think you rank in
the pecking order? I guess of the NBA one this year.
Obviously with those superstars the last couple of years, you've
been right up there when the whips are cracking, heartbreaking
finals exit last year. But where do you sit in
twenty twenty three?
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Do you think?
Speaker 9 (15:44):
Yeah? I still believe that we sit in that top four,
which we have our whole team, and we've we've fold
in and you know, some of our young girls have
been incredible, like Macy Cowford is really Chus a superstar
waiting to happen. I think that young lady. So we've
also got only the Arrest and Riley Love for here. Now.
(16:06):
Riley can shoot the ball better than most that I've
ever seen, So we've just got to continue to grow
as a group and figure out how we get her
more open shots. And Keeley, as we know, it's the
biggest competitor out there. So when we're all together and
we've shown that against Bendy Go and Waverly, even like
Waverly without Keiley so we can actually match it too.
(16:27):
Then we just weren't consistent enough to do it for
the full game because we were a bit outside. But
when we play well, absolutely we're a championship team.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Well, good luck tonight, a big game as we said,
as far as the season go as your host Geelong
at Elfin Sports Center before a trip to Sandringham and
Dandy Dong next weekend all the very best, Sarah, and
thanks for joining us on the water Boys this morning.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 8 (16:50):
Thanks for having you, Sarah, you're.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
There the coach of the Loe Sesson Tornadoes. Big game
tonight in NBA won the thunder of course at home too,
taking on Geelong as well, looking forward to that.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
Looking forward to the rest of the show as well.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
Not too far away as questions without notice, But up
next we're talking cricket with CT high Performance manager Sally
am Beam to talk the Tigers squads which were announced
during the week. That's after this on the water Boys.
Talk it All thanks to tas Mak, your local Carboda dealer.
Speaker 8 (17:16):
This here's the water Boys.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
Thanks to tas Mak, your local Cabota dealer. It is
the water Boys with Brentcoslo and a Cam Brown.
Speaker 7 (17:25):
It's the water Boys Cricket Report.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
It's a big news out of Cricket Tasbania during the
week with the men's and women's contracts for the upcoming
summer finalized and joining us on the show now to
have a chat about it is the Cricket Tasbany High
Performance manager at sally Am Beams.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
Welcome back to the show.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
Soal, thank you very much.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
Brent, nice to talk to you.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
What's it like when you have these finalized, these contracts.
It must be a pretty stressful time for you guys
and the players and not knowing which players are going
to get what contracts, et cetera. So once it's all
ticked off and done, it must be a bit of
a relief for you.
Speaker 6 (18:01):
It certainly is. It's quite a long period actually working
through the process. You want to try and get these
decisions done a bit earlier, I think before it getting
really close to deadline day. But look you're balancing where
you want to go as a team from a performance
point of view, working out how long it's going to
get there from a strategy point of view. But then
obviously you managed people's emotions, so a tricky one at.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
Times, Absolutely no doubt about that.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Now, what's stuck out for me during the week was
with the women's squad and Mazie Gibson opting not to
take a contract for this summer. Just tell us about that,
because obviously she's a bit of a cult hero maze,
she's a well like figure.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
What's her situation at the moment.
Speaker 6 (18:42):
Yeah, that's an absolutely massive loss for us. So you know,
when she knocked on my door, it's probably been over
three months ago. You know, it's a highly emotional meeting
because maybe just feels like she needs a break from
the game. You've got a high performance manager that just
doesn't want to lose a because you know how impactful
she is. But you know, I've worked with us for
(19:04):
three to four years and the care deeply about her.
So you know, you've got to do what's best for
the player and through that process you hope that a
return to cricket is not too far away. But we'll
see where we go. She she wants a bit of
time for herself and you never know, you.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
Never know what's that mean from a Hurricanes' perspective too.
Does that include two twenty cricket or is that a
Whiting suit at the moment.
Speaker 6 (19:27):
No, that that does include hurricanes as well. But you know,
what I do know is that she's still going to
play club cricket for Clarence. So you know, it's I
think it's just a pressure professional environment. It's a lot
of pressure and can be over being a little bit.
So you know, she just wants to see what life
is like away from this cricket space. And some people
(19:49):
return because they miss it. So we'll see where we
go with it.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Absolutely Now, Sarah Koitz was the other big name leaving,
but she was she actually contracted a player and and
how big a loss the second of her Obviously we've
talked about her final heroics of course, but she's an
important player to lose as well.
Speaker 5 (20:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (20:08):
Well, when you know, you talk about Amaze, you're looking
at anywhere between six and ten overs. When you look
at Koity, she's your bank ten. She both at any
phase of the game. So she was not contracted. We
had an agreement with Koity because because she's a little
bit older and got family in Sydney's she's similar to
(20:29):
I guesst that Tom Rodgers situation that comes in and
plays and you know gets that upgrade. But it just
so happened that New South Wales offered her a deal
which meant she could stay at home and that was
the priority for her. So yeah, I had one to take,
actually that one. But again, because you're so fond of
such a human being, you've got to support.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
Them, see I can, I can. I turn your attention
to the men's program, And the first one, which is
quite topical, is the decision around Jackson and obviously him
taking that opportunity to have a two year contract at
New South Wales and potentially some more opportunities post cricket.
Was there some conversations around offering Jackson a two year contract.
(21:13):
My understanding it was a one year, one year deal
with the option of a second year and with attention
points there if you did offer him a two year
contract that may come at the expense of some younger
bowlers that were not necessarily getting the opportunities in the squad.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
Yeah, that's exactly right. The hardest point for the agreement
with Jackson and Cricket Tasmania was that second year and
you know Jackson where he is at his career, that
was what was important to him. The way where juggling
our male program is that performances speak for themselves and
(21:53):
it takes a long time to build a winning team.
You look in at three years really, so it was
a it was a difficult decision when you've got an
absolute legend of Cricket Tasmania. But if we wanted to
create sustainable success, it's that second year was always the
sticking point because we've got to be able to blood
players and we've got to be able to create a
(22:14):
core group of players that are going to play together
for a long period of time and that's what winning
teams do. So it's a shame how it worked out
how it did. You know, we was hoping to get
that one year deal over line, but what happened actually
you know, who knows what time we'll tell with Cricket Tasmania.
But I think Jackson was pretty happy with the offer
he got in New South Wales.
Speaker 5 (22:34):
And the journey with Matthew Wade over the last couple
of months. Did that land where you thought it would
sell in terms of him stumping up and now being
a contracted player with Tasmania because we know you were
very flexible the organization and giving him some time away
to pursue some interest in the two twenty cricket franchises,
(22:56):
but we thought, you know, maybe that's going to come
at the expense of his future in Tasmanian cricket. But
from the outside it seems to be really well managed.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
Yeah, it looks you know, that was a little bit
of a surprise for us, because when we had that
conversation with Matthew last season, it was you know, how
do we support him to give him one last chance
really to put on the AUSSI shirt in a white
ball format. And the decision made for him there was that,
you know, he's got to go play these franchise crickets,
which was a consequence to our red ball team, but
(23:28):
you know, let's help him do that. And then it was,
what it was maybe four weeks ago, we got a
call from him to say that you know, he was
incredibly thankful what we did, but you know, he wants
to commit to cricket Towers, he wants to finish his
career here, he wants to play red ball cricket and yeah,
it was just out the blue and it was like, well, yeah, absolutely,
(23:51):
you know, if we're going to absolutely confirm that we're
agreed that cricket tasman is where you want to be.
You know, you can't just go off and play white
ball cricket, and that's something we want to do because
you're a great cricketer and we've got a role for you.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
And so before we let you go, what's the pathway
look like? I believe there's been a review into junior
cricket and the junior structure. Is that right, and how
is the pathway looking for players coming through?
Speaker 6 (24:17):
Yeah, we've done a big review of that process, and
partly because we were arguably investing in a lot of
people from the mainland, which is technically for me a
Tasmanian pathway program. So we've completely reviewed that and what
we want to do is make sure that we're investing
in our best homegrown talent. And when I say invest in,
(24:38):
it's making sure that they're actually experiencing what it is
like to be in a professional environment. So you know,
our next best players they need to be training three
times a week and that's just cricket skills. They need
to have exposure to a psyche at S and C nutrition,
player development manager. So we've really looked to increase our
(24:59):
resource and the other key part is it you don't
have to just be in the South. Like what we've
made sure we've done is where is our talent in
the state and make sure we're giving all that support
to everyone. And it's going to take time. We've gone
through a younger group, but there is talent there. We
just got to be patient with a system that we're
going to put in place and then hopefully we'll start
producing those players of you know when we talk about
(25:22):
the olden days that go on to play for Australia.
That's our number one aim now is that we don't
just want contracted players. We want players to go on
and play for Australia. So yeah, I'm pretty pleased about that.
Like I said, we're going to need a bit of patience,
but I think we're investing in the resource in the
right people now.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
And what's the rest of the off season look lot
for you? You off to the hundred again to catch
over there or anything like that.
Speaker 6 (25:44):
No, No, that's you know, with the changeing for on now,
my commitment is fully at cricket to and you know
it's just a chapter for me now to move away
from coaching and getting the hot seat. That's you know,
a little bit far away from the cold face and
how you know, hopefully resemble the work that I did
in the female program throughout the Pathway and the male program.
(26:06):
So that's certainly the focus for the next three to
five years. But one thing I've realized, it never stops.
We're back into hurricanes list management now, so happy attention
window opens on Monday and we go again. So you know,
hopefully I'll get a little bit of a break in June.
But now I'm certainly enjoying it and it's been a
(26:27):
good challenge.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
And I said last one, but this is the last one.
Cam mentioned about Matthew Wade before. Are you expecting hind
to be in Purple this year? He's obviously been linked
to the Melbourne Renegades.
Speaker 4 (26:36):
Can you shed someone on that for us?
Speaker 6 (26:39):
Yeah, Look, there is a bit going in and around
that topic. We've got a bit of work to do
in that space. Matthew Wade's got another year on his contract.
But again, what we've got to do is make sure
we've got people happy in the environment. So we've got
no definites from that point of view. But you know,
(27:00):
if we can keep holden that few, I think that'll
be a great thing for the Hurricanes.
Speaker 4 (27:04):
Very nice.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Appreciate your time this morning and try and enjoy a
break I guess for a few weeks at least, and
enjoy a bit of the officely thanks for your tom
on the water Boys this morning.
Speaker 6 (27:14):
Thanks Brent, Take care Jeers guys.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Sally Ambilliam's the Cricket Tasmania High Performance Boss joining us
on the water Boys this morning talking all things Tasmanian
Tigers contracts for season twenty three twenty fourths. Feels weird
to say that for any twenty three twenty fords going
to come up very very quickly. Indeed, there's no doubt
about that. So as the rest of the show and
up next we are doing questions without notice. It is
(27:37):
back to wind up the first how stick with us?
So we're doing it all thanks to Tasmak, your local
Cobota dealer.
Speaker 8 (27:43):
This is the water Boys.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Thanks to Tasmack, your local Cobota dealer. It is the
water Boys with Brancos, Eelo and Cam Brown.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Time for this now, It's now time with.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
The toughest segment in Tasmanian radio, Questions with a notice.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
It is the toughest segment in Tasmanian radio lights have
beat things up. But it's tricky cam when we throw
questions to each other without notice.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
Would you like the new ball today?
Speaker 5 (28:06):
I will go with the new ball and I would
have thought this is a difficult question for you to answer.
But we know the races and saga that's going on obviously,
which Alistair Clarkson and Chris Fagan are embroiled in, in
particular their time at the Hawthorne Football Club. Where do
you think this is going to end up, Brent for
all parties? Because I've read with interest now and you
(28:29):
saw the outburst from Malistair Clarkson. I actually think that's
really sad the relationship and how it's soured with the
Hawthorne Football Club. Theyll of a reunion this year. He
clearly won't go along to that. I wouldn't have thought,
but he's been skating and now believes his own club
should be reviewed. But in fairness to Clarkson and Fagan,
how can they go along to mediation without actually seeing
(28:52):
the documentation about some of the accusations that they're being
asked to address.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
It's unbelievable, to be honest, that it's dragged on for
this long.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
It really is.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
It was grand final work last year, wasn't it when
it all came out? And here we are are we
may the thirteenth?
Speaker 5 (29:12):
That's sured?
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Isn't it to have have it going this long? And
you're right Clark I absolutely slammed Hawthorne.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
Scathing attack on its credibility. Said it was shameful, I
think were his words.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
And yeah, look that that relationship between the pair is
is not good.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
Where's it going to end up? Probably court man.
Speaker 5 (29:35):
You'd think that be a fairly often that the winners
and these sorts of things, aren't they.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
So who knows and who knows how long it's going
to drag on for, But we'll wait and see and
obviously when it does all sort of get resolved and
who knows where it's going to end up. But it
should have been done by now, that's for sure in
my opinion. Hey, really good article in the Mercury today
and all the news it would papers about Australia's top
(30:02):
fifty Indigenous athletes. Who would be You're not without looking
at this article place who would be your number one
Indigenous athlete of all time from Australia. This is a
question without notice.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
I think I think I would go with Kathy Freeman.
That's only because what are you gonna say?
Speaker 4 (30:24):
So that's what they've gone, that's where they've got one.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
Look. Yeah, carrying the nation on her shoulders. That was
one of the great memories, wasn't it, Not just the
opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, but winning that four
hundred meters and the weight of expectation for her to
do that. I think there was a silver medal in Atlanta.
Do you want a couple of world championships? So I
would have thought Kathy Freeman would be the greatest. I
(30:51):
would have thought, yep, you know, I'm a big Paddy
Millks fan, so definitely in my top.
Speaker 4 (30:56):
He's coming at six five. He's at six Paddy.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
The top five is Franklin would be up there. I
would have thought got the top well. Evon Gldigan probably
the first. Well, she won numerous Grand Slams, didn't she.
But I think she was the first woman to ever
win a Grand Slam.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
I was openneen seventy four to seventy seven and in
nineteen eighty first mother to but in sixty six years.
So yeah, she's at two Arthur Beatson Rugby Lea. He's superstar,
number three, Ash Party at four. Now I want to
ask you about the footy players here. They've got listed
in the top ten Adam Goods, Nikki Wimmar and Lance Franklin.
(31:40):
What order would you have those three in if you
were putting your top ten together?
Speaker 5 (31:44):
There, I would go Franklin Goods. No disrespect to Nicki Winmar,
but I reckon, I reckon. You could probably argue for
someone like a poly Farmer even ahead of Nicki Windmar.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
So they've gone Goods five, they've gone win Mars seven
and Franklin ten.
Speaker 5 (32:07):
So's some around the mark. I hadn't had a lot
of time to try. And at least they got the
number one right.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
Poly Farmer at eleven too.
Speaker 5 (32:15):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (32:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
So look it's a it's a great talk topic, isn't it,
Because you had some fantastic indigenous players over the journey
and all.
Speaker 5 (32:23):
And it was just to rank them in order of
what the greatest I'm not sure what athletes. It wasn't
like a particular moment, yeah, not sure, achievement, it was
across their career.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
It was voted by the readers a twelve person panel
comprised of daily and weekend sports editors senior journalist, because.
Speaker 5 (32:42):
If you're talking about a significant moment, then win Mar
rates really highly.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
Considering their athletic achievements and legacy, because you're right that.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
Legacy from maybe the legacy wind Mar puts you up there.
So there you go, Brent. I need to ask you
about the NBA and just to check in because I
read with the interest people are saying it's the greatest
NBA playoff series in the modern era? Is that an
overstatement or probably not?
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Probably not when you think about it. I suppose it's
been exciting, hasn't it? And how good was Jock Landale yesterday?
So starting for the Suns did well.
Speaker 5 (33:20):
As a restricted free agent next year, so I would
have thought he'd get a lucrative contract. He's really We're
spoken to him about him a lot on this year.
He's really elevated himself absolutely.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
And then we've got a big game, a big couple
of games today, so New York and Miami that series
of course two and three, and then the Warriors and
the Lakers also locked it too.
Speaker 5 (33:40):
Well for them to be in the second round of
the playoffs. And the talent that's running around Davis, James Thompson, Curry,
et cetera, et cetera. That's that's what that one's delicately
paulsed having said that though the Lakers three two at
the moment, and is that one at homebre I think
it might be. So you'd think they're they should be
(34:01):
able to close it out. So yeah, unbelievable. And of
course we've got Boston and Philadelphia. So Philadelphia were a
favorites after beating Boston away the other day, and then
they returned the favor didn't they the Celtics to make
it three all? So that the series I think goes
to TD Garden in Boston on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Quick one for you.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
Dusty Martin back to full flight last night. He was extraordinary.
I thought a few questions around his form this year,
but he was back to his brilliant best.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
Where do you see him future wise? You see him
playing for how many more years? Please?
Speaker 3 (34:37):
And can he get back to his best lot we
saw last night on a consistent basis, two more years,
two more years after this?
Speaker 5 (34:44):
Yes, okay, I think so. I think they'll have to
manage him a little bit differently. We said on this
a couple of weeks ago, we thought it was time
to inject him in the midfield, and actually they actually
did have him in more center bounces and he did
more midfield work. I thought last week last night he
was probably a combination of both. But when he's kicking
(35:04):
goals and when he's bursting out of the center, we know,
I remember in the earlier of his career and he's
winning a lot of footage behind them behind the ball, yep.
But you know, ford of center, there's not too many
more damaging players in the game, and you're almost expecting
to win it, don't you when he's in one out
in the goal square. So yeah, I would have thought.
(35:25):
And he's going to be a future Hall of Famer,
isn't he? Absolutely what he did, and particularly that one
season when he took.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
The lot was increased he did in twenty seven and
that was yes premiership year. All right, That is question
was out without noticing. That is our first hour of
the show. Dune and dusted this morning, but we've got
plenty more to come after new Sport and Weather, including
North Melbourne Footage Club assistant coach Jordan Russell. Port Adelaide
assistant coach Luke Kelly, head of the big game at
Blunston Arena at this afternoon. Look at the rest of
(35:52):
the AFL for round nine, also the TSL. We'll talk
a bit more about the NBA, of course, and also
a little previer at.
Speaker 4 (35:59):
The City to Casina which takes place next week.
Speaker 3 (36:01):
And that's all to come for you in extra time
of the water Boys after New Sport and weather. But
we've got all thanks to Tasmack, your local Combota dealer.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
No matter what the spot where it's played or the
teams behind it, we got it.
Speaker 7 (36:13):
This is the water Boys.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
Thanks to Tasmac, Devnpord, Montestern Bridgewater and Smifton your local
Caboda dealer.
Speaker 4 (36:20):
Oh yes, spik first out of the show.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
We got plenty more still to come for you now
in extra time of the water Boys. Before we get
to that, though, Brannie runnus through the scores from overnight.
Speaker 5 (36:30):
Yes, the two games in the AFL last night and
an upset Richmond sixteen six one hundred and two. They
probably wound back the clock a little bit. I thought
Ryan Mantel was very good for a nine possession.
Speaker 4 (36:40):
A couple of goals too, yeah, I thought he.
Speaker 5 (36:42):
Had a real influence. Anyway, they defeated the Cats eleven
twelve seventy eight Dust and Martin with four goals. And
unfortunately for your boys, the West Coast Eagles, they were
thumped last night seventy points if you don't mind, West
Coast six seven forty three defeated by the Gold Coast
sixteen seventeen, one hundred and thirteen. They're sadly depleted at
the most at the moment West Coast with injuries. We
(37:03):
know that two matches in the NRL last night Brenda
Bulldogs twelve, Warriors twenty four and the Panthers forty eight
thump the Roosters four. Now A League finals. They have
snuck up on.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Us here, they have and we had the first League
of the first side of the draw for the semifinals
last night. It was Sydney FC and Melbourne City playing
a one all draw. So they'll meet again next Friday night.
And we've got to Adelaide United and Central Coast and
Mariners coming up tonight, So looking.
Speaker 4 (37:33):
Forward to that, looking forward to the rest of the
show too, Cam Brewd.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
There's plenty on the agenda in our two we're going
to start by previewing the big game at Blunts the
Arrana this afternoon between North Belbourne and Port Adelaid. Kangaroos
Assistant Jordan Russell will join us and Power assistant Luke Kelly,
and then we'll look at AFL for the rest of
round nine and also the TESL as well, and we
wind up the show with the Good Sport Awards. So
we've got plenty more still to come for you this
(37:58):
hour on the water Boys. Stick with us over the
next sixty minutes more fun and frivolity and.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
Of course lots and lots of sport.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
This is the water Boys, thanks to tas back your
local Kbota Diller. It is the water Boys with Brent
Costello and Cam Brown. Massive game coming up at Blunston Arena.
The starts in between Port Adelaide and this.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Mob seeing it at all.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Chorus and from the Mighty rus Joining us is the
assistant coach at Jordan Russell to preview the big clash.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
Welcome to the water Boys, Jordan hare Going.
Speaker 11 (38:35):
Thanks Brend, appreciate it mate, thanks for having me. I've
got to sleep in for two young kids at home,
so I got a full eight hours last night I'm champion,
a bit ready to go.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
Very nicely done, mate, Very good now, big game.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
As we said, Obviously a lot's been spoken about Jason
Horn Francis and coming up against him for the first
time since he left the club.
Speaker 4 (38:55):
Has that been a talking point this week?
Speaker 3 (38:56):
I know Clark has reached out to him, he said,
and obviously care has had a bit to say. But
has he been spoking about too much?
Speaker 11 (39:04):
No, not really, to be honest. Obviously it's fairly topical,
and to be honest, it's probably more more in the
media than what it is in our four walls. From
a midfield point of view, we've really got to respect him.
He's been doing some great things over there in terms
of give you clearance numbers and that sort of stuff.
So we knew that he'd he'd be a good player
(39:24):
for him and he's showing his talent the last month
or so with what he can do. So from a
midfield point of view, we've certainly spoke about his power
around stoppages, but in terms of the other stuff, it
hasn't been too prevalent, to be honest.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
Obviously, red hot starts of the season for the Kangaroos,
those first couple of wins. Haven't unfortunately got one since then,
but you'd fancy yourselves a bit today when you're coming
down to Dahoe Barni a venue you guys play it
particularly well usually.
Speaker 11 (39:50):
Yeah, it was a strong start. It was nice to
get a couple on the board early. We're learning so
many different things about our game plan. I think a
few of the players has said recently that the boys
they've had four or five different game plans in five
or six years, so they take time to really gell
and to get across the eight am players. So we
feel like we took a couple of really good steps
(40:12):
forward last week against the Saints. We come down here.
We haven't played down here and our home.
Speaker 12 (40:17):
Away from home so far.
Speaker 11 (40:18):
So yeah, we're going to give it ourselves every chance
to get to win. They're a good side and we're
looking forward to the challenges.
Speaker 5 (40:27):
We're talking to Jordan Russell, North Melbourne Footballer Club assistant
coach this morning on the water Boys. Jordan, it's caam,
thanks for joining us. Brent mentioned Jason Horn Francis, but
looking from the other side, Harry Shechzel and George Wardlow,
who we know hasn't played AFEL footy yet. But if
we can start with Schesel first. I saw a lot
of him play in junior footy last year where he's
(40:50):
predominantly as a forward. How have you seen his development
even internally at the club. Have you been surprised with
how quickly he's moved to that half back role because
he's had a stunning start to his AFL career. And
just around North Melbourne supporters, what can they look forward
to about Wardlaw in the coming years.
Speaker 11 (41:08):
Yeah, there are two really exciting prospects. As you said, Yeah,
Shees is an incredible talented kid. He did his highlight
reel from his under eight am without standing as a
forward and we sort of looked at it and thought, well,
I'm not sure how the year is going to pan
out in terms of four fifty entries wins, losses, and said, well,
what's he great at?
Speaker 12 (41:29):
And he's incredible that he's.
Speaker 11 (41:31):
Fully iq for a young kid coming in. He's got composure,
he can kick the ball extremely well and make good decisions.
So where can that best set us up in the
group And we felt that half back was the spot,
very similar to how cong we did it with Nick Dakos.
That the attention, isn't it so solely on him as
a ford with the defender, young kid, the physicality of
(41:53):
all that, So how can we turn it around and
use his strength in a different part of the ground.
He's he's a bill at need to be coachable and
to take in information and implement it straight away. He's
probably one of the better better kids.
Speaker 12 (42:06):
That I've seen in my time in footage.
Speaker 11 (42:08):
So he's obviously gone really well. He's a great kid,
which makes it even better. So he's humble and he's
doing really well.
Speaker 12 (42:16):
Big Georgie Wardlaw.
Speaker 11 (42:17):
Yeah, he's had a couple of setbacks. We wanted to
build him up from a physical point of view at
a few handstering issues last year, so that took a
little bit of time. But his attitude to his rehab
he disciplines to get himself to the level to be
ready to play footy again, was outstanding for a young
kid as well. And we're hoping that you can just
get a bit of continuity in the VFL and put
(42:37):
a couple of performances together. But his contest to contest works.
Speaker 12 (42:41):
He's a little ball.
Speaker 11 (42:43):
He'd never say die and if if there's a race
to get the ball out of a pack. I'm putting
a couple of bucks on into it to get it
and bring it out. So he's got a lot of fight.
Speaker 12 (42:53):
Which is great.
Speaker 5 (42:54):
And Jordan obviously a taisy flavored show here and we've
got a lot of connection at the North Melbourne Football
Club with tas Mayne players. Can can I ask you
quickly about the three players that come to mind on
the list? Firstly Aaron Hall who was started the season
I think injured fort his way back in but I
found an interesting a thirty possession game and then found
(43:14):
his way out of the team. Is that around I
guess some other things that he needs to work on
around the defensive aspects of his game or is has
he been pushed aside in promotion of youth? And also
Hugh Greenwood I know he's got an opportunity now at
the expense probably of Ben Cunnington, but found himself in
and out of the team. And obviously Tarreon Thomas who
(43:34):
last week came back and played ver fil forty I
think had a slow start but finished the game off
pretty well. Where are all those three players at just
for our Tasmanian audience?
Speaker 12 (43:44):
Great question.
Speaker 9 (43:46):
Hay.
Speaker 11 (43:47):
Yeah, I think we're at a point now where we're
going to decide whether it's its youth or it's experience.
And I think this is the best part about this
first half of the season is that we can have
a look at young guys, we could have a look
at some of the older guys, and if the older
guys are playing good footy, you stay in the team.
In terms of Hawley, yeah, he can find the footy.
(44:08):
He could do that in his sleep, like He's got
an incredible ability to get to the right spots. We
just felt at this point in time his defensive stuff
just wasn't where he needed to be. So he's working
a way that his craft with that. In the VFL,
he had a pretty good game last week in terms
of his defensive ability as well. So I mean there'll
be a time in this season where he'll come back
(44:28):
into the AFL team, I'm certain of it. But he
just gone back to work on this sort of the
balance between his offense and his defense. Huey Greenwood, he's
been a star in terms of the way that he's
gone about it. Obviously quite frustrating the start of the
year for him, playing some twos and he's been playing
some really good footy in the twos and it essentially
(44:50):
came down to, we can't have too many thirty plus
guys in our midfield. We want to keep promoting will
Felt just playing in the twos that minute, but we're
trying to get games into him, Tom Powell, these guys
we want to keep investing time into Eldu and John
Simkin and Balley Scott. So it's sort of it's a
really interesting balance trying to weigh up future versus the now.
(45:12):
So Hugh, he's been great with his attitude, some setbacks
in terms of playing tours, but yeah, really looking forward
to seeing his hunts and tackling pressure clearance wins this week,
and yeah, it's a it's a bit of a long story,
isn't it, with the bits and pieces that have unfolded
this year. But the positive for him is he's back
(45:32):
into the regular he's been We're working away in the
VFL and I think at some stage in the next
week or so, hopefully it gets the tick of approval
to come back into the AFL program full time. So
he's obviously had a few challenges. He's an absolute star
when he's on the footy field, so we've just got
to get him back to his best mentally, get his
(45:54):
off field stuff sorted and he's in control of that,
so we're hoping he comes back in and can have
the impact for us the season.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
It's a comprehensive rap, Jordan. I really appreciate that for
our tazzy listeners and we wish you all the best
today mate, a big game as we said, two ten
at Bluntston Arena this afternoon, North Melbourne taking non Port Adelaide.
Good luck and thanks for joining us on the water Boys.
Speaker 4 (46:14):
Appreciate it, Appreciate it, guys.
Speaker 12 (46:16):
Have a good day kid.
Speaker 3 (46:17):
Jordan and Russell there the assistant coach at North melbournehead
of the big game at Blunston Arena. And after this
we're going to get the other side of the coin
when Luke Kelly Port Adelaide Footy Club assistant coach joins
us here on the show to see what's happening at
the Power. That's next here on the water Boys doing
it all thanks to tas Mack, your local Comboda dealer.
Speaker 8 (46:34):
This here's the water Boys.
Speaker 3 (46:37):
Thanks to tas Mack, your local Coboda dealer. It is
the water boys with brancosse Elo and Cam Brown. We
just spoke to Jordan Russell from North Melbourne. It's time
now to get the other side of the equation for
this afternoon's big game at Blunston Arena.
Speaker 10 (46:56):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (46:56):
Joining us from Port Adelaide on the line now to
have a chat about the big game is the assistant
coach of the midfield Luke Kelly.
Speaker 4 (47:02):
Welcome to the Water Boys, Luke. Great to have you
on mate, pleasure thanks having me mate.
Speaker 3 (47:08):
Tell us about this game the South that it's an
interesting matchup, isn't it because we know traditionally North Melbourne
played Blunston Arena pretty well. You guys have been here
a few times in the past as well, though, so
are you going with some confidences afternoon to get the
job done.
Speaker 12 (47:21):
I think our last month and a bit brings us
in with a bit of confidence and they're able to
put some pretty consistent football together and playing some really
tough matches which we know today definitely be one of them.
As you said, Danny previously have been Danny and other
clubs and taken on North Dan here that not only
obviously the opposition, but then the weather and the ground itself.
(47:42):
And play some challenges, so I were looking forward to
it today.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
I'd just say, really impressive last month of footy. What
what do you put it down to anything.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
In particular that you've turned around since the start of
the season.
Speaker 12 (47:54):
I think our pressure and around the football. I think
early in the early in the year we've probably exposed
our backs a little bit too much, just an easy,
poor movement. I think we've really got our pressure going
around the foot and in the front half, which is
really we've been able to. The senses have been really
strong and that's looks greater to opportunities for us as well.
Speaker 5 (48:14):
And the other thing I would find too Luke interesting
in your commentary about it, seems more opportunities for the
younger brigade at Porto Laide in the midfield with Rozi Butters.
We're seeing drew a little bit more in there now, Houston,
and it's probably come at the expense of wines and biked,
but there's still been trivic contributors for your footy club.
(48:34):
But you look like you've got a different mix in
there at the moment.
Speaker 12 (48:39):
Yeah, I think we're in a fourteenth position where we've
got some depth in our midfield unit and we're trying
to manage making sure they all get opportunity in there,
you know, like, oh, he's still a really important part
of that midsield is playing a good bulk of time inside.
But you know they've all taken their turn to step
to a wing to allow one of their teammates inside,
which is really nice. You know, they're in a position
(49:00):
was going to south of s midfield group looking to
give each other opportunity. I think it's the tolem. I
think good steps for not just the real long term,
but for the rest of the year as well.
Speaker 5 (49:09):
And what about the season so far, and obviously it's
been well documented the personal battles that with Jeremy Finlason
and trying to support his wife at the moment, but
navigating through that, he's had a terrific start the season
for you guys.
Speaker 12 (49:24):
Yeah, it's a real credit to him, really his family.
You know, they're really a strong unit and clearly guarding
him through some some more field battles that you know
he wouldn't wish up on anyone, but the way they've
attacked it. But in terms of Jeremy himself, he walks
in the club every day and he's there to play
football and he switches gears and he's been a really
(49:46):
great contributor for us. But I think that's one thing
I found coming to Port Adelaide in the last couple
of years. It's a big family club and they know
what you're going through. We're able to do it together.
Speaker 5 (49:57):
Talking to Luke Kelly, the Port Adelaide football club assistant
this morning on the water Boys, obviously with a Tasmanian audience,
it would be remiss of us if we didn't ask
you about Tom McCallum to Luke, a new draftd to
your football club this year and certainly came on in
the back end of last year as an intercept defender.
But we know we all say that he spent some
(50:18):
time in a wing and in the forward area of
the ground and his junior career, how's he tracking And
if you were to project out, where do you think
his best position will be as an AFL player.
Speaker 12 (50:30):
Yes, you make a good point about his ability to
play other positions because he's actually got so many AFL
tools that we think you can translate to a lot
of positions. But I think right now what you're saying
is you need those hybrid defenders that can play tall, small, run,
have that athleticism and I think that's where we will
see him play his best football to ree his ability
(50:52):
to cover and join in the energy of the buddy.
He can just go all day and he just says
that full back and he's all of a suddenly he
side for fifty just because he can. He can run
and get up on the ground. So he's tracking well
his development. He's working really closely with our solving coach
James Hartlett, and he's really tracking all lastly, and.
Speaker 3 (51:15):
Look before that you go obviously a lot spoon spoken
about Jason horn Francis in the lead up to this game,
first time against his old club.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
Of course, how's how he going?
Speaker 3 (51:23):
And no doubt you guys speak to him during the
work to check in on him. How would he be
feeling as he wakes up this morning, do you think?
Speaker 9 (51:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (51:31):
To be honest, he's he's playing this week pretty normally
in that long time saying too much dissimilar to how
we normally approach the game. And that's all we're again,
that's all we're asking of him, isster go out there
and playing his normal game and will support him you know.
That's that's he's can gained himself in this football club
and he's got really strong relationships and playing groups. Whatever
comes we'll deal with. But for him, he's starting to
(51:55):
put some really strong footfall together and that's all we're
asking of him today.
Speaker 4 (52:00):
Fantastic stuff, mate.
Speaker 3 (52:01):
We wish you all the very best against the Ruse
two ten bounce at Blunston around this afternoon. Luke Kelly,
appreciate your time ticly on game day and all the
very best mate.
Speaker 4 (52:09):
Thanks for joining us on the water Boys.
Speaker 12 (52:12):
Thanks so appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (52:13):
There we goes.
Speaker 3 (52:14):
Look Kelly the midfield coach there at Port Adelaide joining
us at the Prove with the big game at Blunston
Arena and a big round of AFL footy ahead for
around normal look at the rest of the games after
this here on the water Boys doing it all thanks
to tas Mack, your local Cobota dealer.
Speaker 8 (52:28):
This is the water Boys, thanks.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
To tas Mack, your local Cobota dealer. It's the water
Boys with Brent coos Celo and Cam.
Speaker 1 (52:34):
Brown turning their attention to the national game. It's the
water Boys AFL round.
Speaker 4 (52:39):
As we mentioned two AFL games last night.
Speaker 3 (52:42):
A little unusual to have two Friday night games, but
the first one was at the mcg Brownie and it
was Geelong losing to Richmond.
Speaker 4 (52:50):
And you back to Tigers last night. You had a
feeling about this one, didn't you.
Speaker 5 (52:53):
Yes, I thought back to the war. I didn't think
Richmond looked too bad, certainly from a match up point
of view against Geelong and providing they could get the
ball to ground. I thought the small forwards made trouble
the Cats, and yeah, look they still had some good
contributors Geelong. It looked like Hawkins when he started the
game was going to kick five or six on young Balder.
But I thought he fought his way back really well.
(53:16):
He still ended up with three goals, but they sadly
missed dangerfield didn't theame the midfield and Cameron probably are
quite a game by his standard, certainly in terms of
he's still one of their better players, but certainly in
terms of impact on the scoreboard. Tom Stewart was outstanding Brent,
but Timmy Taranto he has his knockers, but he certainly
knocks up getting the foot he doesn't he twenty eight
(53:37):
possessions and Phil Bolton always looked dangerous that they would
have been delighted to get three goals out of Cotchin,
not a noted goal kicker, and we know he spent
the season playing forward and Jack just chips in and
does what Jack does. Such a smart player. But we
turn our attention to the later game last night and
West Coast. They started off this game all right, Brent,
(53:57):
and we're inted at court a time, but in the
what was it? It was the second quarter that blew
them away where the gold cast kicked eight to one
and that was all she right.
Speaker 3 (54:08):
Yeah, it was tough watching being an Eagles band, but obviously, yeah,
no secret what they're dealing with at the moment as
far as injuries go and player availability. But Maddie Rowe
was outstanding for the Sons. I thought Ben King he
kicked four which dominated the ruck.
Speaker 4 (54:24):
Of course up against Bailey Williams.
Speaker 3 (54:28):
So look disappointing night. You just got to look at
some of the positive switch.
Speaker 5 (54:32):
Well who's a positive brand? And you know I'm a
massive fan of Oscalen, but his standing season, he really
is in a team which is not inundated with for
fifty entries or reliable and easy ball use and whereas
in the goal kicking in the he's adding him a
terrific season. Sydney Freemantle early game today the seg it's
(54:56):
a big one for both these teams. And you said
to me during the week, and I actually agree with you.
Whoever loses this one can kiss their finals chances goodbye.
Speaker 3 (55:04):
Well, they're both on three wins, aren't they, So it
could not be any more important thirteenth versus fourteenth? Yes,
how wan it Pito Sydney at home, you'd have to
go with antymbit. Look, it's a big game. You're right, brownie.
Speaker 5 (55:17):
I think that'll be a close game on NIX one's
under ten points. North Moldern Port alo we know bluntson
arena and it's been terrific to have Jordan Russell and
Luke Kelly respectively from the North Melbourne and Port Adelaide
football clubs this morning. I think North Melbourne will give
a pretty good account of themself. I don't think they'll win,
but just the fact that it's a Blunston arena, a
(55:39):
foreign ground in many respects for Port Alais. We know
they've played here before, yep, But what do you say,
give me a margin in that one, Brent.
Speaker 4 (55:46):
I will say twenty five points.
Speaker 5 (55:52):
Hawks have been competitive in the last couple of weeks,
but they fell away badly against Freemantle after some pretty
encouraging performer is a few weeks ago and against the
Bulldogs in particular, where they're in the game, but they
come up against a pretty strong Melbourne football club.
Speaker 4 (56:08):
Brent, Melbourne by heaps Brownie not much and wanted to
be said there.
Speaker 5 (56:11):
I think they were lucky last week Melbourne against.
Speaker 3 (56:13):
G I didn't see a lot of that game, but
certainly the Bits I saw absolutely.
Speaker 5 (56:18):
But full credit to them. They did what they needed
to do and they're one of the Premiership phrase favorites
within good reasons. So to the Brisbane lines now since
a probably since the Bulldog game in Round three ge
they've stepped up after a slow start to the season
and they're looking like they've got all the key ingredients
this year to go deep into September.
Speaker 3 (56:39):
They do, Branny, but they need to go on with
it too. They've been in this position many times before
and shown us this. But you're right, they've got the
nucleus there and almost impossible to beat the gab aren't
they it's a real fortress.
Speaker 5 (56:51):
For well, it is a fortress and probably the greatest
homeground advantage at the moment in the AFL. This is
I'm not just saying it's because the Bulldogs, but it's
probably the game of the round and the punters are
finding it difficult depending on what betting agency you look at,
who's favored in this game. But we know Carlton have
in the past their key fords have monstered the Bulldogs.
McKay and Kerne have always troubled the Bulldog defenders. They
(57:14):
get Liam Jones, though, who they didn't have previously, So
this is going to be a really close game. Carlton
have been smashed in the media all week by their supporters,
by previous people in the administration linked to the club.
How do you see this one playing out? The Bulldogs
can actually set their season up really well with a
win over Carlton today and sort of push towards the
(57:34):
top four, believe it or not after a slow start.
Speaker 4 (57:36):
Yeah, look, it'll be really interesting.
Speaker 3 (57:38):
I reckon, It's really hard to pick a winner, isn't it.
I really am struggling to pick in this one.
Speaker 4 (57:43):
But I'll be guided by you.
Speaker 3 (57:44):
So you're right, but but you are always confident with
the bulldogs too, even if they're having a stink in
time you're back.
Speaker 5 (57:51):
Probably tells you that there's not a lot of logic
you throwing to me. Be guided by me. What a story,
James o'donald the boy gave away cricket absolutely a few
months ago. We know as the son of famous cricketer
and Sin Kilda footballer Simon o Donald and he gets
his chance today. He is a big lump of the
lad Brent, so they've been preparing him really well in
(58:14):
the VFL's form, stacked up and he gets his opportunity.
Tod I think the dogs in a close one Adelaide
versus Sint Kilda. Adelaide needs to respond. They're playing at home.
Speaker 4 (58:23):
Good game, that one that's all set up, isn't it?
Third versus tenth? But Adelaide's a much better team than
Tenth at the moment I think, and I.
Speaker 5 (58:31):
Think that's a good I agree with Adelaide probably win
that game and then Collingwood GWSG. How can you stop
Collingwood at the moment Sidney were right in it probably
for a while. A couple of last week against him
but then in the end they just put the foot
to the floor in the last quarter. They are the
standout team this season, Britt.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
Absolutely no doubt about that, and no doubt that we're
heading towards the end of the show as well, but
we've got a bit to get through.
Speaker 4 (58:58):
Up next to allnounce the next one of our good
Sport Ofward.
Speaker 3 (59:00):
Have a look at the TSL for the latest round
of footy coming up but this afternoon. Also a quick
look at the NBA finals as well. That's sort of
come for you on the water Boys this morning doing
it all. Thanks for tas make your local Cobota dealer.
Speaker 8 (59:12):
This is the water Boys.
Speaker 4 (59:15):
We are just about at the end of another ripping
edition of the water Boys. But before we go, it's.
Speaker 1 (59:20):
Been doing the hard yards this week thanks to McDonald's.
It's time to announce the next winner.
Speaker 7 (59:24):
Of the water Boys Good Spider Ward.
Speaker 3 (59:26):
Yeah we do thank McDonald's. The quarter Pounder a classic
for a reason. Available after ten thirty a m. The
winner of the good Sport Award wins one hundred dollars
to spend it at into Sport and Brownie who's been
doing the hard yards this week past?
Speaker 5 (59:39):
Yes, a really good winner this week, Brennan. It comes
from the sport of lawn boles, which is terrific and
it goes to Mick Sheriff. Great player, great bloke, great
bowler and great at keeping the turf organized. So there's
a nomination for mix Suriff this week's winner of the
Good Sport Award.
Speaker 3 (59:56):
Good on you met A one hundred dollars is headed
your way to spend out into sport thanks McDonald's of course,
and McDelivery has arrived on the mymac as app. Spend
over thirty dollars on your first McDelivery order and grab
a medium big mac meal for free.
Speaker 4 (01:00:08):
And if you like to dominate someone.
Speaker 3 (01:00:09):
For our Good Sport Award, head to the website of
the station listening to us on it right now. There
could be a player, a coach, a volunteer, anyone that's
doing a wonderful job in the local sporting community.
Speaker 7 (01:00:21):
The water Boys talking all things ts L.
Speaker 3 (01:00:24):
Big rounded to yourself footy coming up this afternoon, cam
Let's get out to skybus over first with Lordedale hosting
Lonces and how do you see this one playing out?
Of course lorded only the one win of the season
so far. That was against Klinorky, so they just have
to win this.
Speaker 5 (01:00:38):
The Bombs a bit of a transition phase, aren't they.
When you hear their coach Christensen talking about trying to
get that balanced right between experience but also bringing in
some younger plays. I think this one will be fairly close.
Believe it or not. I know, I thought Long System
were pretty good last week against the Tigers in particularly
Young James League, Liam Jones, some of the younger players Baymont,
(01:01:03):
we're pretty good shamemakers. But they're going to lose. Some
of those players are being rested from the Devil, so
I think that'll tighten the game up a little bit,
but I'll still go Long System.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
Curtain raiser this morning at blunt Stonnarona before the AFL
game Clarence hosting North Hobart.
Speaker 4 (01:01:17):
How do you say this one playing bad?
Speaker 5 (01:01:18):
We're talking about not ruling out making the finals. I
read with interest in the Mercury today, So it's good
to have that strong ambition so well done in some
of the commentary that's coming out at North A. But
at a moment, so not.
Speaker 4 (01:01:30):
Only one game. Well, they're equal third.
Speaker 5 (01:01:32):
And Clarence struggled to shake off gleen Orky last week,
and that's no disrespect to glen Orky, but I think
Clarence will be too strong in this one.
Speaker 4 (01:01:40):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:01:40):
And the final game of the round is at KG
five one o'clock this afternoon, and that is Glenorky hosting
North Lon Sestem.
Speaker 5 (01:01:47):
Yeah, you're out of the team. Hurts Glenorchy, North Long
system comfortably very good.
Speaker 3 (01:01:51):
All right, That just about brings us to the end
of the show. NBA predictions from you plays for the
week ahead.
Speaker 5 (01:01:58):
I think Philadelphia will get it done. I think James
Harden and Joel Embiid will bounce back and they'll win
in seven against Boston. Well, that's the main one. I
think the Lakers will get it done against Golden State.
Speaker 3 (01:02:12):
What about yourself, Yeah, I am going the same as you.
Speaker 4 (01:02:16):
Actually, I think you've hit the nail on.
Speaker 5 (01:02:18):
The Miami W'll get through against New York. So that's
a waur seat panning out very good.
Speaker 4 (01:02:22):
Now, I just want to give a shout out to
the city to Casino.
Speaker 3 (01:02:24):
Fun Run will probably provey this properly next week, but
it's obviously the fortieth sorry, the fiftieth anniversary this year
of this wonderful event.
Speaker 4 (01:02:34):
Currently they've got sixteen.
Speaker 3 (01:02:35):
Hundred and one participants registered. They'd love to smash the
four thy nine hundred and sixty which was in twenty
twelve for the fortieth anniversary, So we know Tasmanians get
on board things late, Brannie. So they've got a week
to enter and it is open until next Saturday, the twentieth,
four pm, so you can enter up until then. So
if you get around the City to Cassino that it'd
be great to celebrate what's going to be a wonderful
(01:02:57):
anniversary next weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:02:58):
So far in the.
Speaker 3 (01:02:59):
Twelve K four hundred and sixty eight entrance seven K
six hundred and sixty three and the two point seven
K has four hundred and seventy for a title of
sixteen hundred and one. So make sure you're registered for
the City to Casino Fun run, a wonderful event for
our state.

So my beautiful wife Allison, great mum, an unbelievable mum,
my mum, and.
Speaker 4 (01:03:37):

Thank you, that's been a big show. You're having a
spell next week. The Big Sheep had BB's back in.
Speaker 4 (01:03:53):
Is that correct you think so?
Speaker 5 (01:03:54):
Yeah, the squad'll be named a little bit later. Yeah,
the emergency we'll see.
Speaker 3 (01:03:59):
Enjoy your weekend run. Will catch you next Saturday morning.
