The story opens on the village itself: the Unsteady Quill sign that needs steadying, shutters along Market Row lifting in dependable order, Cal Cinderwright’s latch at the smithy (second notch by eight), Barnaby Bellweather rehearsing his vowels—and a junior watchman keeping an eye on ordinary things. It’s all comfortingly routine… until the routine hesitates. For a heartbeat, a clock seems to forget itself. That tiny slip is our invitation in.
This first chapter introduces Echohill’s rules, rituals, and cheerful nonsense—the everyday machinery that makes a place feel like a place—and the quiet question that begins when “how things are” misplaces a beat.
Expect dry wit, warm world-building, and recurring faces you’ll want to meet again.
