What do you do when life falls apart—and keeps getting worse? In this moving episode from The Wisdom Journey, Stephen Davey walks through Job 2:1-10, one of the most devastating and inspiring passages in the Bible. Satan has already stripped Job of his wealth, his workforce, and his ten children. Now he attacks Job’s health, covering him in painful boils and driving him to sit in the ashes of a garbage heap. Even Job’s wife urges him to curse God and give up.
But Job doesn’t. Instead, Job raises what Stephen Davey calls “a monument of praise in the valley of despair.” He doesn’t sugarcoat his suffering, and he doesn’t understand why it’s happening. Yet, he says, “Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”
This episode is a powerful reminder that God is worthy of worship—not just when life is easy, but even when you’re sitting in ashes, surrounded by loss. If you’ve ever asked where God is in your pain, you’ll find both comfort and courage in Job’s response—and in the God who held him together.
