Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Sam Wood, and this is your motivational moment for
this week, and it's all about getting you through the
hardest part of the day. Now, for so many of us,
this time of the day is three thirty PM, also
known as three thirty itis. Now, this is an interesting
(00:22):
time of day because I think for many of us
we feel, or we have felt perhaps previously, that this
is the time of day that only we feel a
bit flat, we feel a bit down. And then the
more people we speak to, the more we click and
realize that no, no, no, this affects all of us.
And the reason it affects us all is it's not
(00:43):
just a made up term. Three point thirty itis is
actually a real thing, and it's based off our sleep pattern.
So what happens is we usually hit our deepest sleep
at about two or three am, and then twelve hours later,
the cycle has come all the way around, and it
tells us that you've been alert for too long and
that we need a break to put our body back
(01:05):
into balance. So we have that flat spot. And what
happens when we have our flat spot, or we crave
something sweet or we think we need something sweet to
pull us out at the other end. So there's two
components to this, says The first is it's actually quite relieving,
I think to understand that it's a real thing, and
it's a physiological thing. It's not necessarily just a psychological thing.
(01:28):
It's our body experiencing something from a physical perspective that
we all experience it a similar time of day, and
there's a genuine reason behind it, because many of us
would probably be experiencing this and we've never actually labeled
it or identified it or realized it actually happens at
the same time every single day or most days at
the same time. Once we accept that, we know it's
coming and we're more prepared to deal with it in
(01:49):
a better way, in a proactive way, someone we spoke
about last week. So when it comes along, it is
important to listen to your body when you start to
feel like this and switch it up. But what you
don't want to do is reach for the Mars bar
or the kick cat because that's what we tend to do,
or the bag of lollies or whatever it might be,
because that's actually not going to help us in the
(02:09):
long run. In fact, thirty minutes later, you're going to
crash again. And you're going to feel three times worse
than perhaps you did even at the three thirty itis.
How we switch that up is that if you've been
sitting at your desk, you get up a move, you walk,
you get some fresh air, you move around the house,
you move around the office, just for ten minutes. And
if you have been running around conversely, and this is
(02:29):
an interesting one, I had to do some research on this.
I didn't realize it was the case, but conversely, you
should actually slow down. So if you have been running
around like a maniac at that time of day, which
many people have, particularly parents, school pickup and that kind
of thing, it's actually really good for you to do
the opposite and slow down, take a break, sit down
for that ten minute period, and then when it comes
(02:52):
to the food, have a snack by all means, but
try and get that little boost from a natural sugar
sauce and make sure you're hydrated. We're often really dehydrated
by this stage of the day and where we think
we need that sweet snack, which is kind of our
brain playing a trick on us. We can get the
exact same benefit from a naturally sweet hit from some
(03:14):
fruit or something like that. So the challenge of the
task for all of you beautiful wood life business this
week is, first of all, notice that your body is
telling you you're in an afternoon slump. Just be aware,
be present, and switch it up at that time of day,
(03:38):
move your body for ten minutes, drink some water to
get hydrated, and have a naturally sweet snack. And I
want to hear your feedback about how that little change
makes you feel the expeck EXPENSI
