(00:23):
Welcome to episode 191 of theWriting and Marketing Show with
author entrepreneur Wendy HJones.
As always, it's an absolutepleasure to have you with me.
This week.
I am recording from Virginia inthe United States of America,
suffolk Virginia to be preciseand I have been here on a
(00:44):
three-month book tour.
I need to start really with anapology this week because the
last couple of weeks I've beenmissing in action, as they say,
and this leads me to today'sshow, which is about self-care
and looking after yourself as anauthor.
As I say, I have been here on athree-month book tour, but the
(01:06):
first week I got here I managedto get COVID, which was very
mild, I have to say, but it'sleft me really exhausted, and
people say that you're reallyexhausted from COVID and I
believed them.
But what I didn't realise wasthat you're exhausted when you
first get it.
Then you perk up a bit and youfeel a lot better.
(01:28):
But suddenly you will just getexhausted again on a random day
and it really interferes withwhat you're able to do.
And I was doing a lot of booksignings which I really couldn't
get out of because, apart fromthe one where I actually had
COVID and was shielding so thatI didn't, I was isolating sorry,
(01:49):
should I say so that I didn'tgive anybody COVID, because I
don't want to do that obviously.
But I had to do the booksignings because I didn't want
to let people down.
So she exhaustion took over andsometimes I'm just having to go
and have a lie down, have asleep, and I've not got long
COVID or anything.
It just takes a while to getover.
(02:09):
But I didn't want to pushmyself too much because I didn't
want to push myself into longCOVID, I didn't want to overwork
myself so that I got a chronicillness.
I would rather look after myselfand I believe that is so
important as an author.
We are very good at pushingourselves on.
(02:30):
We are very good at burning themidnight oil.
We are very good at burning thecandle at both ends.
Getting up extremely earlysleep, going to sleep extremely
late so that we can meetdeadlines or when the muse is
tickling our brain cells.
We will carry on working, wewill carry on meeting, meeting
(02:53):
readers, we will carry onpromoting marketing and doing
everything that we have to do torun an author business that
sometimes we forget aboutourselves.
We forget that we are human andthat we do need rest and that
we do need time to ourselves.
And I think self-care isextremely important and it's not
(03:14):
something that is talked aboutoften enough.
So self-care are all the thingsthat we should be doing daily
that we don't do.
For example, getting enoughsleep and I know I've just been
talking about the fact that I'msleeping all the time, but
getting decent, quality sleep ona regular basis is so important
(03:35):
for us as authors, and yet Ifind myself writing until two or
three o'clock in the morningand then getting up really early
five, six o'clock in order tocarry on, because I want to
carry on with the story, I wantto get the book out, and you're
not getting the right amount ofsleep.
And not only does that run youdown as a person you can feel
(03:55):
washed out, exhausted and you'renot getting the best but it can
run you down creatively you canlose your creative flow.
You can.
You're not able to come up withnew ideas, and it's so
important to us that we do thatthat we do need to get decent
amounts of sleep.
So my first, my first tip toyou really is get enough sleep,
(04:19):
and it's enough sleep time awayfrom the computer as well.
I have an Apple watch and myApple watch, at quarter past
nine every evening, will dingand it will tell me that it's
time for me to get ready for bed.
Now, that's not saying get intoyour pajamas and go to bed.
What it's saying is put downall blue screens and don't do
(04:40):
anything with blue screens afterquarter past nine at night, and
that helps me to get a decentnight's sleep, because blue
screens, as computers are, as Iput out, or tablets, phones
they're all blue screens andthey will interfere with your
sleep pattern.
What that does is it actuallyyou will follow sleep, but then
(05:02):
you waking up quickly and youwon't get a full night's sleep,
and that is to do with the bluescreens that we use.
So that's my first tip.
Second tip is to put the bluescreens down at a decent time
before you go to bed.
Give yourself a couple of hoursbefore you go to bed, when
you're not using blue screens.
(05:23):
Put the phone away, put thetablet away, walk away from your
computer and get enough sleepwithout blue screen.
Of course, being hydrated isalso important.
Now, when I say being hydrated,I don't mean just drinking
coffee all day.
I'm very good at that one, although I do drink decaf coffee
, but it still dehydrates you.
(05:45):
You need water.
So my third tip is, as anauthor, set a timer.
Set a timer and have a drink.
Get up, stretch and have adrink and a drink of water.
Yes, you can have a coffee aswell, or whatever your tipple is
, whether it, unless it'swhiskey, then drinking that all
(06:06):
day might not be the best ideafor your health or for your
creativity, because you'll bepickled by lunchtime.
But you know, if you tea, coffee, herbal tea, fruit juice,
whatever it is you likedrinking, then make sure you
drink enough in a day and youcan measure your water
(06:26):
consumption.
I've got a water bottle which,if I fill it up, it tells me I
should have drunk enough waterby a certain time, and it gives
you the times hourly throughoutthe day, and then I should have
drunk that much in the bottle bythen and then at lunchtime you
fill it up again and you startagain, and that's a good way of
(06:47):
doing it.
I got it from Amazon, it wasn'texpensive and it measures out
and lets me know whether I'mdrinking enough water throughout
the day, and I absolutely lovethat.
So that's.
My third tip is keep hydrated, because that will help you to be
more creative and it will alsokeep you healthy.
(07:09):
So my next tip I've alreadymentioned very briefly is about
stretching.
I get very bad backache andshoulder ache and neck ache, and
that's because I'm hunched overa computer for hours on end in
a day, and especially at themoment where I'm not at a desk,
I'm not in my usual chair whereI can make myself sit properly.
(07:33):
I'm writing on trains, I'mwriting on airplanes, I'm
writing sitting on beds, I'mwriting dining room tables, I'm
writing at picnic tables.
You know wherever I am, I'mwriting and I'm not doing it at
the right desk in the rightchair.
So it's important to stretch.
When you get up every hour tohave a drink, then stretch,
(07:57):
stretch your muscles out and gofor a little walk, even if it's
just a couple of times aroundthe house.
At least you're getting a bitof exercise and you do need more
exercise than that and I willget into it.
But it will stretch yourmuscles, it will give your
muscles time and your spine timeto recover, your joints time to
(08:18):
recover.
You know.
Rotate your shoulders if youfind that your shoulders are
getting tight.
Rotate your shoulders.
Stretch your back out, forwardsand backwards, because we all
go backwards.
But, to be honest, to stretchyour spine out you need to go
forwards.
Now I'm not giving youphysiotherapy advice here.
(08:38):
I was a nurse but I don't knowanything about, you know,
keeping your spine.
Well, it's not my belly wick,as they say, but I do stretch
forwards and backwards so thatmy spine gets stretched every
way, and right and left, so thatmy spine is moving and not just
(08:59):
sitting hunched over all day, every day.
So that is tip number four makesure that you give your muscles
a workout.
Now, tip number five againalludes to it.
I said go for a little walk, but try and get some exercise
every day, even if it's only a15 minute walk outside, a 30
minute walk outside or doingsome exercises in the house.
(09:22):
Try to do some exercise, properexercise, every single day.
Now, that's not just for you asa writer, that's for you as a
human being.
It's good to exercise.
It really does keep your, keepyour body sharp, it makes sure
that you get in the bloodpumping around your body,
(09:43):
getting oxygen to your brain, getting oxygen to your muscles,
and it really does keep youhealthy, having exercising every
day.
So think about how you canincorporate exercise into your
life as a writer.
I think that was tip numberfive.
Tip number six in terms ofself-care is do other things as
(10:05):
well.
I wrote a blog post last weekand it said writers are humans
too.
Writers are people too.
Sorry, and that means that weneed to remember we have a life
outside of writing.
Go and see people, speak topeople, meet up with friends
just for a coffee.
You don't even have to discusswriting, just meet up, have a
(10:28):
coffee, a slice of cake, whatever it is that you are
thinking of doing, and get tomeet other people.
Go out, go to the library, chatto the librarians, grab
yourself a coffee if you're inScotland, because you can get
coffee in the libraries inScotland, which is rather nice,
really well, you can in Dundee.
I can't speak for the rest ofScotland because I've not been
(10:50):
in every single library, but youcertainly get a cup of coffee
in the libraries in Dundee, which is very nice.
Get some books out, read, readas much as you can.
Not only will that help you tobe more creative, but it keeps
your brain sharp.
It keeps your mind sharp.
It keeps you thinking.
Do crosswords.
(11:11):
Crosswords are a good way ofkeeping your mind sharp and
keeping you, you know, at thepeak of creative fitness really
intellectual fitness because youneed to exercise your brain as
well, and keeping hydrated isalso very good for your brain.
So do everything you can tokeep your brain sharp for as
(11:34):
long as possible.
As you can tell, I'm getting tothe certain age where you need
to think about things like that.
Really, we don't think aboutthat when we're younger, but you
certainly do when you get older.
You want to keep your memorygoing, so do things that can
stimulate that.
And the other thing I wouldadvise is travel.
Certainly travel.
Travel is good for you in manydifferent ways.
(11:55):
First of all, it's exciting.
Secondly, it is it's good foryou because you learn a lot.
You learn so much when youtravel about different cultures,
the way different people react, the way different people act.
You know different words thatare used different foods of the
world.
(12:16):
I mean, I'm having a ball herein the States.
I know I'm here on a book tourand that's one of the other
reasons I'm quite exhaustedbecause it's been very intensive
for three months.
There's been a lot going on andI've loved it.
Don't get me wrong.
I have absolutely loved beinghere and doing all this meeting
readers, meeting other writers.
It has been a blast, but it'salso exhausting.
(12:39):
So sometimes you just need totravel for travel's sake.
Go to a different country, spend a week there, look at what
they do, find out about theirculture, their history.
I'm doing a lot of that at themoment because I'm going to do
research, but I need to havedays off as well where I'm just
(12:59):
doing it for me.
I'm not doing it for research, for books.
So there's different thingsthat you can actually do that
will keep you healthy and helpyou care for yourself and
remember to your mental healthis important.
So get out in the sunlight ifyou've got sunlight.
I'm very fortunate that I'vegot lots of sunlight at the
moment, so it's lovely to go outand have a good time in the sun
(13:23):
and enjoy yourself, but try andget some sunlight whenever you
can, whenever there is sunlight, get out in it.
It's good for you in a numberof ways.
First of all, it helps youabsorb vitamin D.
You get, you know it's.
(13:44):
It's good for your bones to getout in the sunlight.
It's good for your skin to getout in the sunlight although,
remember, if it's really hot, bright sunlight, you need to put
something on to protect yourskin.
But it's good for your mentalhealth.
And if you can't get out in thesunlight, use a sad lamp which
is seasonal, effective disorderlamp.
Use a lamp that mimics sunlight, because that will help you to
(14:07):
feel better mentally and meetingother people also helps you
feel better mentally.
We're very good as writers tosit indoors on our Jack Jones,
as we would say, here whilealone, and we will spend time
writing and we never really meetother people.
(14:28):
We need to get out and meetother people, especially if you
live alone.
Okay, if you've got family, you're seeing your family at
least every day, or I hope youare.
If you're not, my goodness, your poor family.
They must wonder where you are.
But get out, look afteryourself, because you know
something.
Everything that's happening inthe world at the moment is
(14:50):
reminding us that life isprecious.
You never know when then youknow your last day is going to
be and I'm not being depressivehere.
I'm just saying you never knowwhat's going to happen so spend
time with other people, spendtime looking after yourself.
Enjoy life as well.
Enjoy your writing, 100%.
(15:10):
Enjoy your writing, but 100%enjoy your life as well.
Get out there, see what lifehas to offer and just grab it
all and do what you can everyday.
I hope this has helped you andI very much look forward to
being back again with you nextweek and I am looking at
interviewing someone.
