Today's episode features Alexandria Miller, fifth year doctoral student at Brown University's Africana Studies Department and host of Strictly Facts: A Guide to Caribbean History and Culture podcast which is a project to promote accessibility of Caribbean history. Alexandria shares her graduate school journey, how she navigated graduate school during the pandemic as well as how she uses her research as a means to stay connect with her community.
About Alexandria Miller
Alexandria Miller is a historian, writer, and multimedia documentarian who is passionate about capturing Caribbean stories. She earned her B.A. with distinction in African & African American Studies and History from Duke University and is currently a Ph.D Candidate in the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University. Miller was selected as one of the 30 Under 30 Caribbean American Emerging Leaders by the Institute of Caribbean Studies in 2018 and, as a member of The Beautiful Project, her photography on Black women’s beauty was showcased at The Metropolitan Museum of Art the following year. The winner of several academic awards including the American Association of University Women’s American Dissertation Fellowship, Alexandria’s scholarly interests encapsulate Caribbean history, women’s history, Black culture, and entrepreneurship. She is also a fierce advocate for educational equity and supports underrepresented groups’ learning in and out of the classroom. With this advocacy work in mind, she founded Strictly Facts: A Guide to Caribbean History and Culture https://www.strictlyfactspod.com/ in 2021, a podcast and digital platform that aims to educate and celebrate Caribbean history by connecting history, politics, and activism to the region’s rich, contemporary music and popular culture.
