Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to there is a
Method to the Madness.
My name is Rob Maxwell and I'man exercise physiologist and
personal trainer.
I am the owner of Maxwell'sFitness Programs and I've been
in business since 1994.
The purpose of this podcast isto get to the real deal of what
really works and, mostimportantly, why things work.
(00:21):
Hence the name there is amethod to the madness.
Before I get to today's show, Iwant to thank Jonathan and Lynn

(00:46):
Let's get this podcast started,everybody.
I'm going to talk a bit todayabout the value of personal
training and value of personalcoaching and let me explain why.
(01:09):
I've got a new book coming outand it's going to be out at the
end of this month, hopefully.
I know we're real soon, realclose, I should say.
It's been at the publisher fora bit and we've been working on
the cover art and all that andit's a really good company, so
they're making sure everything'sthorough and good.
So we're there and he saidprobably end of September, but
we're getting real close, soit's going to be soon.
(01:30):
But anyway, I wrote this bookbecause I think it's really
necessary and important.
I don't know, it soundsextremely self-promoting but
it's really not, and when youread the entire book you will
see what I mean.
But I'm going to talk a littlebit about that today.
(01:51):
I'm going to talk about thesolution, or a solution that I
see to the physical fitnessproblem in our country, and in
the first half of the book Italk about what the problem is.
Like there's a problem, there'sa major problem with health and
fitness in this country, in theUnited States and, you know,
(02:14):
really all over the world.
I mean, we have a health andfitness crisis.
Obesity has never been higher, sedentary lifestyle is
continuing to stay the same andnot really improve, and that is
the biggest problem, and becauseof that then we see all kinds
(02:35):
of different lifestyle, diseasesand other complications.
So I outlined the problem.
The problem is that there's amajor solution to help our
health outcomes and that is toexercise and eat right, and
people are not choosing it.
So I write the book talkingabout why Like that's the
problem People aren't doing it.
(02:56):
Only 20% of the population isdoing enough physical activity
to get benefits.
20% I mean 80% aren't doing theminimum of 150 minutes of
moderate activity per week andtwo days of strength training.
They're not doing it.
80% of the people decided thatless than 1.5% of your day isn't
(03:21):
worth it and that's a problemof your day isn't worth it and
that's a problem.
And I get into why.
You know what are the majorreasons given for that.
And then the second half of thebook I talk about how the
personal coaching has worked.
Why do I know it's worked?
(03:42):
Because I've done it.
I've done it for 31 years hasworked.
Why do I know it's worked?
Because I've done it.
I've done it for 31 years and Iknow when people come to me
with different problems oftrying to get in shape, I'm able
to help them solve it andthey're able to stick to it.
So for 31 years excuse me ofexperience, I've been able to
come up with why I think havinga personal trainer has been so
(04:06):
effective.
And then I that's my experience, that is my belief and then I
went and did some research on itand found out, like some
statistics.
So today I'm just going to talkabout those solutions, because I
think we spend a lot of time inthe negative.
I mean just to give you a clue, like some of the reasons people
give for not doing physicalactivity is, of course, you
(04:29):
could probably guess, number oneis they say they have no time.
That is number one.
And then number two is thatthey feel like they're not
educated enough.
They feel like they don't knowwhere to start.
So, like those are some of theproblems given for why people
aren't taking part in physicalactivity, and so, again, the
(04:51):
main part of the book is thesolutions that solve these
problems.
So I'm going to list them today.
Talk a little bit about them.
The first one is accountability.
All right, that's the numberone reason people give for
hiring a personal trainer, andit is 100% so true, I mean, we
(05:12):
have to have an accountabilitypartner.
And again, before you, you know, I don't, you know, I know most
people aren't cynical, butbefore you think, oh, it's, you
know, such a self-promotion.
It's like, well, I mean I'mfull, I'm busy, I'm not taking
new clients right now.
I'm saying that the industryitself, if you get the right
(05:35):
trainer and I talk about that issuch a way to help yourself
with these problems, andaccountability is one of the
most important things.
So, let's say, personal trainerisn't in your budget, okay, but
an accountability partner mightbe somebody who is going to like
meet you there, and even beforeI became a trainer, I almost
(05:58):
always had that.
I always had a workout partner.
I always had a workout partnerand we would train for a certain
amount of time and then maybe Imoved away, went to school or
maybe they changed jobs, whatever I'd have another one.
Like it's almost like thesecond most important person in
your life oftentimes is yourworkout partner, and they don't
even have to be like greatfriends, it's just you share an
(06:21):
interest in fitness, you'repretty similar levels and you
hold each other accountable atthe gym.
So personal training does that, because the hardest part for
everybody is to get started.
For me, too, like that's thehardest part.
Once you get into the workout,it's grooving, you've got
momentum going, you're happy youdid it.
It's getting to it.
(06:41):
That becomes the hard part andthat's where your accountability
partner is.
I know plenty of people thatrun a lot and they meet people
to go on their run workoutsbecause it helps them get out
the door.
That's all the same thing.
So when you have somebody therewaiting for you, statistics
(07:02):
show that you absolutely aremore likely to show up.
Let me give you a statistic yourprobability of reaching your
goal is 95% better if you'vetold your accountability partner
about your goal.
95% better, isn't that crazy?
(07:23):
95%.
So just by telling somebody, hey, I'm going to, you know,
lose 10 pounds this month andyou know, naturally, it's got to
be realistic you have nowincreased your probability.
I mean, isn't that great?
So, like there's statistics thatshow that it absolutely works
(07:44):
to have somebody waiting for you, you don't know how many times
in my career in 31 years, thatwhen people showed up and they
said you know, if I didn't havethis appointment, I wouldn't
have done this today.
But you know, I knew I paid forit.
Or you know, I knew I didn'twant to leave you hanging.
Whatever it is, it works.
I mean, it's happened moretimes than I can say and it
(08:05):
probably happens.
Well, I know it happens everyweek.
At least one person in the weekis going to say if I didn't
have this appointment, I wasn'texercising today.
So that's the first thing thathaving a personal coach or
trainer will do for you.
It will give you theaccountability to show up.
The next thing and these reallyaren't in order outside of
(08:28):
accountability.
That's like number one ishaving somebody.
Having a trainer or personalcoach or accountability partner
again will push you, notnecessarily motivate you.
I remember when I was in collegeworking on my psychology degree
, and I took a class calledhuman motivation and it was
(08:49):
really cool and I thought, youknow, we're going to learn all
these skills to motivate people, cause even when I was majoring
in psych, before I got intoexercise physiology for my
graduate degree, I was in thefitness and so I thought, oh,
this will help me motivate.
And the instructor, theprofessor, wrote on the board.
He said you can't motivateanybody.
Like, oh man, how likedeflating is that you know?
(09:10):
So what are we going to do forthese next three months?
And what I learned was you howto help people motivate
themselves.
So one of the things thathaving your personal coach or
trainer does for you is itpushes you.
You know, statistics have shownthat everybody does better with
(09:31):
an audience.
Most of the time that's good.
Sometimes it's not like ifyou're competing with people in
the gym who you shouldn't becompeting with.
You should be focused onyourself.
I mean, that's probably notgood, but most of the time it's
a good thing and statistic afterstatistic has proven it.
As a matter of fact, the veryfirst study ever done in sports
(09:54):
psychology was on socialfacilitation and it was done in
somewhere around 1898.
That is a long time ago and itwas on professional bicycle
racers and, yeah, I didn't knowthey raced bicycles before the
turn of the 19th century, so butthey did.
Anyway, social facilitation andit showed if you want a little
(10:17):
piece of history, the guy whodid it, the psychologist, was
Norman Triplett, but it showedthat just by having other people
around watching the bicycleracers run faster.
So we've known forever thathaving somebody there pushing us
and especially beingencouraging and whatever it
takes to get you to do more, that's what good personal
(10:40):
coaching, good personal training, does.
That's one of my favorite partsof it.
Like I love when somebodyreally wants to be pushed
because, look, nobody wants togo to the point where it's
uncomfortable.
That's a myth.
Like nobody likes that, likeit's biologically against our
grain to do that.
Nobody wants discomfort.
(11:01):
So we none of us like I like towork hard and I like to be
pushed and I do a decent job ofpushing myself, but I don't like
it.
We all want that path of lessresistance.
I mean, that's just the waywe're wired.
We can do more.
(11:29):
To inspire us, to spot us helpsgreatly and that's something
that personal training obviouslydoes.
That's like the thing you see onall the light shows the
programs.
You know the commercials.
They show the personal trainerand it's usually like
inappropriate type of pushing, like too much yelling, too much
screaming, the weights too heavy, like they show it in a bad
light but that's not reallyaccurate In a good light.
It's just simply being thereand saying I know you have two
(11:51):
more or two more or three moreor whatever.
Like a good trainer is able tospot when the person really is
done versus when the personthinks they're done, and there's
a huge difference between thetwo.
A good, experienced trainer isable to see that.
They're able to see that theperson's kind of like I mean
I've been doing this so long Isee it in facial expressions.
(12:14):
I see it a little bit of changein body position, a little bit
of posturing, breathingtechnique, a huff, a puff.
Like I know, especially whenI've worked with people for a
few times, like I know theirmannerisms and I know when
they're getting ready to quit, like I just know and, like I'll
try to tell some of my othertrainers, I'll say hey, you know
(12:34):
they're going to do this whenthey don't want to do another
one, and to help them, watch outfor those cues.
So when you have to stop, youhave to stop, but most people
stop before they have to stopand to really get full benefits,
we want to do the best that wecan.
I mean, that's just commonsense, I think.
Right.
So that's what a good personaltrainer that knows what they're
(12:58):
doing can do.
All right, let's see Anotherone.
Oh, you know, along those samelines I'm looking at my notes
here and along those same lineswith pushing somebody is,
sometimes you're not alwayspushing them in that direction.
Sometimes you're pushing themto be more accountable, and
(13:19):
that's a part of pushing orencouraging.
Sometimes it's not you got onemore, you got three more.
Sometimes it's like so whyhaven't you logged your diet?
You're telling me you want tolose weight.
You keep telling me you want tolose weight and I tell you one
of the best solutions you canever do is to log it into
MyFitnessPal or a similar typeof app.
And you're not doing it.
And every time I ask you this, you basically tell me that you
(13:43):
don't have time or you forgot.
So a good trainer, aresponsible trainer, is going to
practice tough love and say, look, you can keep telling me
you want to lose weight, butuntil you start doing the
actions I'm telling you to do,we are both wasting our time.
A really good trainer and I dothis.
I'll just say, look, I'm notgoing to help you with this
(14:04):
because you're not following theadvice, and that's what a good
trainer does.
Also, to push somebody.
To push somebody, sometimes youhave to push limits.
You have to make sure that youpush back on the limits and say
I can't do this for you.
You're going to have to do thispart on your own.
That's pushing somebody.
Never had a bad outcome of that.
(14:26):
I mean, some people need thatand usually they come back and
they say you know what?
That's why I'm paying you.
So a good trainer can't be apeople pleaser.
They have to be.
Like you know, if the clientgets mad at me because I tell
them what is in their bestinterest and I'm trying to help
them, then they're not worthhaving as a client.
Like you know, a good trainerhas the experience, the
(14:48):
knowledge and the confidence tobe able to cut people loose when
they're not doing it.
That's pushing somebody.
It's not just like letting themkind of violate your boundaries
all the time, like you've setthe rules.
And if they constantly violatethe rules that you're trying to
set for them to help themselves, then the good trainer holds
them accountable.
So that is also a part ofpushing and I'm glad I looked at
(15:12):
my notes because I didn't wantto miss that.
Another thing a good trainerdoes that can help people with
this curse of not doing theactivity they need to do is they
provide the education neededthey need to do?
Is they provide the educationneeded, and that is so important
.
I mean, so many people areconfused as far as what they
(15:36):
really need to do and there isso much misinformation out there
on the internet.
I don't know if there's anothersubject area that has more
misinformation about it thanphysical fitness and health.
I mean, my goodness, left andright there are theories, there
are opinions, and I constantlytell people to follow the
science and follow the facts, because they're out there.
(15:57):
They haven't changed nearly asmuch as people think they have
over the course of the last 20years.
They're pretty consistent.
Yes, opinions change, butthat's because you're listening
to the opinions of hackers andpeople that don't know what
they're talking about.
So one of the perks of having agood trainer is you get that
(16:18):
education.
And that's another thing Ireally really like.
I like when people want theinformation Say, hey, I was
seeing this the other day, whatdo you think of this?
And I can tell them.
I had somebody asking me theother day about creatine.
They said that their girlfriendwanted some advice on a
particular brand of creatine orsomething like that, and I'm
(16:40):
like, no, you're not botheringme.
Like, I like this stuff.
Let me give you thisinformation on this.
So, like that's, one of myfavorite things to do is to
actually help People solveproblems, and a lot of the
problems, as I said I outlinedin the first part of the book,
is what's the problem?
(17:00):
Well, one of the problems ispeople are confused.
I said that was the secondreason why, outside of time,
that people are not doing it,because you know there's
paralysis of analysis.
They're like I don't know, man,I'm just not going to do
anything and I get it.
I mean, I get the frustration.
I'm not picking on the peoplethat aren't doing it, I want to
(17:31):
help them.
I really pick on the peoplethat give them the wrong
information.
But having that good trainerwith the right education and
right experience and right levelof certification cuts through
all that.
Anymore you don't have to worryabout what you know, internet,
or what program you need tocheck or what accounts you
should follow on social media.
It's like you can do all thatif you want.
But you can go or I can justask my trainer who knows you
know, and again, I get a lot ofthat and I and I feel like
(17:52):
that's a compliment to me thatI'll get that I'll get it in
emails from clients or pastclients or friends.
You know I'll get emails.
Hey, what about this?
I like that and personally Ithink it's a huge perk for
clients because, man, that'spretty cool to be able to go
somewhere and have somebody beable to answer those questions
for you directly, you know, without you having to look it up
.
I think that's huge in any area.
(18:14):
And next there's support.
I it's huge in any area.
And next there's support.
I mean, you know it's withoutsupport we struggle, right, and
oftentimes people don't get alot of support.
I mean most of the time whenpeople embark onto a health and
fitness journey, they're doingit alone.
You know I mean so many of myclients through the years and so
(18:35):
many people I've known throughthe years have said you know,
I'm on this game, but my husbandwon't, or my wife won't, or my
family won't, or my kids thinkI'm crazy, like it happens, and
that's okay.
We should only be trying tochange ourselves.
I think people get veryfrustrated, and kind of rightly
so.
But if they didn't try it, theywouldn't get frustrated, but
(18:57):
trying to change their familytoo.
And they'll say I just can'tget so-and-so to do it.
It's like, well, they're not ona program, they're not paying a
trainer, of course, they're notgoing to do it, they're not
showing the interest right, soyou can't change other people.
Having said that, that nowmakes the person who's embarking
in their new journey feel alone.
So good coaching and goodtraining helps them not feel
(19:18):
alone.
They're getting supported.
They're getting the data boys, they're getting the fist bumps.
They're getting the there hegoes.
They're getting the hey man,you did that race.
They're getting whatever.
They're getting that and thatreally, really, really matters.
Now, if you get a trainer who'stoo like, preoccupied with
themselves, likeied withthemselves and it happens they
(19:40):
talk about themselves all thetime or they tell you their
accomplishments.
I mean, yeah, then that's notgood.
But that's why the very lastpart of the book almost second
to the last part of the book Italk about what you look for in
a trainer.
I mean, personally, I don'tlike to do that because I'm I
don't know.
You know, in many ways I'm shy, like I don't like to talk about
(20:01):
myself, like I don't like totalk about accomplishments.
It makes me feel uncomfortableand so it's kind of like
naturally falls in there towhere, when somebody needs that
support, I'm able to do itbecause I don't want to talk
about myself.
So you know, that just I thinkcomes a little bit natural.
But like, if it doesn't forsomebody, they need to learn how
(20:22):
to take themselves out of theequation and give the support to
the client who's paying for it.
And that is a huge perk togetting that.
And if you're not getting thesupport, there's a problem.
They should celebrate the goalswith you.
They should celebrate the wins.
I love it, you know.
I love it when I see numbersgoing up.
You know, I had a client alittle bit ago, leslie.
(20:44):
You know she's gotten so muchstronger and you know I'll tell
her all the time.
I'm like look at your numbersgoing up here, man, they're
fantastic.
And it makes her feel good, makes me feel good because it
tells me what we're doing isworking.
That's support.
And if nobody gives you that athome or whatever, okay, granted
, in a perfect world we get itat the gym and we get it at home
, but it's better to get somesupport than none, so that
(21:07):
training will absolutely giveyou that support.
All right.
Another thing you get benefitis decision fatigue.
Decision fatigue means that youget so tired of figuring out
what to do next that you don'tdo it.
And you know, out of all ofthem, that's probably the one
(21:28):
that I could relate to the most.
When I go somewhere for helpwhether it be like I used to go
to a swim coach or or whateverit's like I solve people's
problems all day.
I try to.
I want to go somewhere else andhave to think about what to do
next, like I used to.
You know people are like well,my swim coach doesn't explain
(21:50):
enough.
I'm like, who cares, man?
They're telling you what to do,do it.
They're telling you theimportant stuff, like so for me
I don't care, and you know I'man exercise physiologist, so I
would like if they got to knowthat, which was always a little
bit like unfortunate, becausethen they would start being oh
well, you know, you know I'mlike no, no, pretend I don't
know.
Just, I'm here to do what youtell me to do.
(22:10):
I don't want to think about it,I don't.
Don't, don't make me make upyour mind for you.
You tell me what you want me todo.
That is huge.
Like I do that for clients here, and good trainers do that.
I write the workouts and I lovewriting the workouts, I love
doing that.
And when they come in they'reready to roll.
You don't have to think aboutwhat to do next.
(22:33):
You simply can show up andfollow direction.
You don't have to go.
Oh man, what am I going to dowhen I get to the gym?
I mean, if you like that, great.
But that's one of the reasonspeople don't go to the gym is
because they don't know what todo.
So one of the perks is you'reon your way to the gym and you
go, man, I just show up, I getmyself in the door.
That's hard enough.
And you're right, that is hardenough.
(22:54):
And then when I show up,there's my trainer with this
little clipboard, her clipboard, and like, all right, we're
doing this today.
Like I mean, ladies andgentlemen, I cannot state enough
how important that little perkis.
All right, so that is it, myfriends.
Like those are the biggestreasons that coaching works.
(23:14):
And again, if you can't affordit, I get it.
I mean, yeah, but you can findan accountability partner, you
can find somebody that will helpyou do these things that I just
outlined, because I really dothink that if we found that
somehow, some way, we cut downon that lack of people coming to
(23:35):
the gym, you know we turn that80% not showing up higher right,
because one thing I know forsure is, once people start
working out with me, they getunder a program.
That's not the issue anymore.
They show up.
I mean, there's always things, people get sick and people
travel, sure, but they stickwith it.
So obviously these things work.
(23:55):
So how do you find these thingsin your life?
All right, that's the challenge, that's what I want you to
think about and until next time, just work out.
Thank you for listening totoday's program.
