(00:01):
Welcome back to this is Baseball.
My name is Brandon Johnson.
Happy Tuesday.
Happy Jackie Robinson Day.
One of the best days in this sport.
Everybody's going to bewearing the number 42 on the back
of their jersey in honor ofJackie Robinson.
So it has been a couple weekssince I talked Kansas City Royals,
(00:27):
all on this show.
If you know anything about me,I'm from kc.
The Royals are the team in mybackyard, so spend a ton of time
on them.
I took some time off to justkind of COVID some of the worst starts
and best starts in MajorLeague Baseball last week.
So if you want to check thoseepisodes out, they're there for you.
(00:49):
But let's just spend a fewminutes looking at the Royals through
16 games.
So they are 8 and 8 at thetime of this recording, which is
honestly about where Iexpected them to be.
I.
I figured they would hoverright around.500 at this point in
(01:14):
the season.
They haven't had the easiestof schedules to get this season going,
but they're a team that Ithink is capable of hanging in there,
and I think that's exactlywhat they've done so far.
And there's a few things thatstick out to me this season so far.
(01:36):
Number one is the pitching hasbeen really good again and they've
picked up where they left offin 2024, where the starting staff
has been pretty much lights out.
And the the difference in 2025versus 2024 is the bullpen has been
(02:04):
significantly better.
I remember last year duringthe season we were talking about,
man, if only this bullpen wasbetter, this Royals team would be
winning a lot more games.
Well, so far through these 16games, they've been.
The bullpen has been amazing.
(02:24):
Carlo Estevez has been afantastic addition.
He's already had five saves.
Daniel lynch is on aridiculous scoreless inning streak.
I think he's up to like 28 orsomething right now.
Lucas EG hasn't given up any runs.
Hunter Harvey, same thing.
(02:45):
Hunter Harvey's on the ILright now, but John Schreiber, there's
just a lot to be excited aboutin this bullpen in 2025 versus 2024.
And then you have Cole Reagan, who Cy Young candidate last year.
Seth Lugo been the same.
Michael Lorenzen back on theteam, he's been serviceable.
(03:07):
Same with Michael Waka.
All of these pitchers, andI'll get to Chris Boobich in a second.
All of these pitchers havedone a great job at delivering quality
starts or close to it and havedone everything that they can to
give the Royals offense achance to win the game.
But yes, Chris Boobich, he's aplayer that Royals have been trying
(03:32):
and trying to make him a starter.
They see him as a starter andhe got the final spot in the rotation
this year and through threegames started he's been fantastic.
He has a 0.96 ERA right now.
(03:52):
He's 2 and 1, 21 strikeoutsand five walks.
He's been amazing.
And I know it's early, but Ilove to see the resurgence and it
looks like at least in theearly parts of the season he's going
to be a pivotal piece of this rotation.
(04:12):
Now on the flip side ofthings, this is where it's a little
bit interesting is the Royalsoffense has gotten off to an incredibly
slow start.
I'm looking at a player likeJonathan India who in my opinion,
I don't know if it's too earlyto say that the Royals have won the
(04:36):
Jonathan India trade, but sofar he has been as advertised if
not better.
I know the batting average isnot there, but he's getting on base.
He's been a great lead offbatter and kind of getting the ball
rolling.
I think like looking at someother pieces on this team.
(04:59):
Salvador Perez has gotten offto a slow start.
I wonder, I, I, I, I'm, I'mnot that concerned about his slow
start.
The only thing that I wouldwonder is this is his age 35 season.
So is this where you know hedrops off an edge or once the season
(05:22):
gets going, does he get theball rolling a little bit more?
I think that that is the case.
He does lead the team in rbiso he is driving in runs.
He's just striking out a lot.
But Bobby Witt Jr.
He's doing Bobby Jr.
Things.
I think he's leading theleague in doubles.
The power will come.
(05:44):
One interesting player that'sseem to make a little bit of a turnaround
is Mikel Garcia.
He's a little bit more of autility player this season, but his
bat seems to be significantlybetter this season than it is last
season.
Vinnie Pascantino, he hasn'tgotten it going either.
(06:04):
I think he's hitting.218 right now.
He's got a on base percentage under.300.
I wonder if the hamstringthing has been a little bit more
of an issue than we thoughtand that's the reason for his slow
start.
But the big issue with thisRoyals team is they're just not scoring
runs right now.
(06:24):
They what they.
I mean the pitching hascarried the Royals to an 88 start.
Royals played the Twins last week.
They took three out of fouragainst them and they only scored
nine runs and played Clevelandover the weekend.
Only scored five runs, lostthat series.
So the offense just isn'tgetting runs home and I think that
(06:47):
will come.
I'm looking at like, I'm notexpecting MJ Melendez or Hunter Renfro
to carry this team.
MJ's got a batting average ofoh, 77.
Hunter Renfro 128.
I'm not gonna sit here and bemad at them because I don't think
either of those two playersare gonna be on the major league
(07:08):
roster 60 days from now.
I think MJ, unfortunately,I've said it before the season, I
said it last season.
I don't think he's a majorleague player and he's proving that
again.
Hunter Renfro is going to getDFA'd in all likelihood.
The one interesting thing isJack Caglion, Royals top prospect,
(07:28):
is mashing in Double A.
I'm assuming he's going to getcalled up to AAA at some point and
if he does what he is doing inDouble A and aaa, I think he'll be
on the major league roster andbe a huge help to this team and the
final third of the season.
But I'm not worried aboutSalvi or Vinnie.
(07:51):
I think.
I think they'll get warmed up.
I think the offense will get going.
Their track history tells usthat they'll turn things around.
Vinnie had 97 RBI is goinginto September last season before
he got hurt.
So I think he's going to be aproductive member of the team.
(08:13):
But this team is fun in 2025because going into this season versus
last season, you have a teamthat went to the postseason, they
won a postseason series, theyknow how to win, they know what it
takes to get to the playoffsand they have that experience now.
(08:37):
And I think everybody's doingwhatever they need to do to make
sure that that happens again.
You have Mikel Garcia that'swilling to move around.
You have Jonathan India that'sa utility player that's like, yeah,
put me where you need me to beand I'm going to do what I can to
help this team be successful.
(08:57):
So I think the mindset islet's continue to be great this season
versus last season.
Let's not lose 106 games again.
Let's figure out how to win.
They've moved past that.
They view themselves ascontenders and that's how they're
operating.
And it's been really fun tosee so far.
(09:21):
So the main thing is obviouslyget those bats going, help relieve
some of the pressure from thepitching staff of having to be perfect
and great every time out.
Continue to hover around.500.
Don't go on those big losingstreaks that the Royals have been
accustomed to going on.
(09:41):
They avoided doing that lastseason and you see where it put them
in the standings.
Beat the teams that you'resupposed to be, win series, win two
out of three, win three out of four.
If, if you're going into afour game series, split it.
At the very least, I thinkthey've got their mindset and their
game plan figured out and it'sexciting to see.
(10:02):
So over the next seven daysthe Royals are going to be on the
road.
They're playing the Yankeesfor three and then we'll head into
Detroit and play them fourtimes over the weekend.
The Yankees series being arematch of the 2024 ALDS, obviously,
big three games and then goinginto Detroit playing a division foe.
(10:24):
Detroit's actually leading theAmerican League Central right now.
They're 9 and 6 at the time ofthis recording.
Like I said, the royals are 8and 8.
So they are right there.
But anytime you get a chanceto go head to head against someone
in your division, it's a big series.
So I will be looking forwardto that one.
Let's jump around.
I haven't done much league news.
(10:44):
Let's jump around and seewhat's going on around the league.
Earlier today, Aaron Judge wasnamed captain of Team USA for the
World Baseball Classic.
That is going to be next season.
If you're not sure what thatis, the World Baseball Classic is
basically Major LeagueBaseball's version of the World Cup.
(11:08):
The last time it happened wasin 2023.
Shohei Ohtani in Japan beatUSA in the finals.
Shohei Ohtani struck out MikeTrout to end that.
Kind of fitting, honestly, butthey just did a lot of the qualifying
during spring training thisyear and again that's that'll be
next year during spring training.
See if Japan can go win backto back or if USA can get back to
(11:32):
the top and win themselves.
We'll learn more what thoserosters look like throughout the
year.
But what we do know is AaronJudge is team captain for USA and
Mark DeRosa will be themanager of Team USA again.
He was the manager during thelast WBC.
So last week the Toronto BlueJays has been a saga going on for
(11:54):
over a year at this point.
But the Toronto Blue Jays andVladimir Guerrero Jr.
Agreed to a 14 year, $500million contract extension.
And this is one of the biggestcontracts in history, definitely
one of the biggest in BlueJays history.
(12:18):
And this one's interesting tome because clearly these massive
contracts are not going away.
Juan Soto with the 15 for765sh Otani's $700 million deal,
you look at like Bobby Witt Jr.
S deal of around 300 millionlooks really good for the Royals
(12:41):
right now.
I am all about the playersgetting their money.
Obviously, that's how baseballis set up.
So this is going to continueuntil something changes in how the
league is set up financiallyand economically.
But Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
(13:03):
Is interesting.
I, and I honestly thinksigning any player for a ridiculous
amount of money into their 40sor into their late 30s is risky because
there's been a lot of data toshow you that it's really not all
(13:26):
that great of an idea, especially in the back half of the
deal.
You have the Albert Pujols,Robinson Cano a Rod, Miguel Cabrera,
there's Chris Davis, there's.
There's so many that you canlook into and go, well, it was fun
for a little bit, but, youknow, that fun didn't last very long.
(13:47):
A lot of them ended up, end upgetting released anyway because in
Major League Baseball, thesecontracts are guaranteed and a player
is going to be crazy to walkaway from a ridiculous amount of
money.
So they force the team's hand.
Happened with pools left orgot released by the Yankees, went
to the Dodgers for a littlebit and then went back home to St.
Louis and ended up gettingthat 700th home run.
(14:10):
So that was cool that he gotto do that back in St.
Louis.
But Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Is 25.
He'll be 40.
What?
When this deal is up, he'sgoing to be making $40 million and
then that'll get, That'll justdrastically go down.
(14:30):
But at the very least, he'sgoing to be making $30 million for
the years.
But he's a first baseman andtraditionally first basemen end up
being designated hitters atsome point in their career.
So my only worry is, numberone are the Blue Jays now tied up
(14:57):
in Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
And they're not going to beable to compete with in free agency
and other places.
The Blue Jays have a littlebit of a questionable spot right
now.
I think their manager might bea little bit on the hot seat.
They've underperformed thelast couple of years.
(15:18):
There's no guarantee thatthey're going to make the playoffs.
This year.
But are the Blue Jays going tobe spending a ridiculous amount of
money on a full time Dh6 yearsfrom now and you're paying a Dh37,
$35 million a year?
(15:41):
If Vladimir Guerrero Jr isproductive and just putting out all
world numbers, then youprobably aren't going to be too upset
about it if you're the Blue Jays.
But if you have somebody thatcan no longer play defense and then
doesn't really have it at theplate anymore, you're stuck for multiple,
(16:05):
multiple years paying somebody30 plus million dollars a year.
So again, I am all for theplayers getting their money.
That's how it's set up andthat's what owners and teams want
to do, is do these super longterm deals.
I just, I think teams shouldgo for shorter deals and get the
(16:31):
most out of a player in asmall amount of time versus regretting
their decision eight yearsinto a 15 year deal.
Now one final thing that cameup over the weekend and I don't have
a ton to say about it otherthan I just wanted to acknowledge
(16:51):
it, but John Heyman, longtimebaseball writer, tweeted a photo
of a list of 103 players.
It just says subject the list.
And then it's a bunch ofplayers listed 1 through 103.
No more Garcia para, MannyRamirez, Johnny Damon, Trot Nixon,
(17:11):
David Ortiz.
Lots of names that you'drecognize and they're from kind of
the 90s and 2000s.
John Heyman posted this andalmost immediately deleted it.
So I don't know what it was orwhat he was trying to do.
A lot of the players on thislist tested positive for ped.
(17:35):
Some of them I'm not sureabout, but you can go check it out
yourself.
Just look up John Heyman, thelist, and you'll see it right there.
Not gonna get too deep into itbecause I don't know, really, there's
not a lot of context to it.
Again, it was posted andalmost immediately deleted.
So gonna leave it alone fornow and see if it happens to come
(17:58):
back up.
That's all I have in today'sedition of this is Baseball.
Thank you so much for listening.
I will see you on Thursday.
