(00:00):
Welcome in to this is Baseball.
My name is Brandon.
Happy June.
We're officially at that pointin the season where it's kind of
this unofficial date that alot of people put into their calendars
of.
Let's wait until June 1st tosee where this team's at or where
that player is at.
(00:21):
Are, is my team for real?
Are they contenders?
Are they pretenders?
We've officially reached thattime of year.
So let's kind of see howeverything is going so far this season.
So let's just get some of theobvious stuff out of the way this
(00:45):
season.
I think it is June 1st or it'sJune and I have not talked about
the Dodgers much.
I have not talked about ShoheiOhtani much.
Shohei Ohtani, reigning MVP ofthe National League, looking like
(01:07):
he's just going to try and winit again.
For what would be the fourthtime in his career.
23 home runs as tied withAaron Judge is.293 batting average.388
on base, which is anunbelievably impressive season so
(01:31):
far in this early part of June.
But on the other side of theleague, the two time MVP and reigning
MVP Aaron Judge is having an ahistoric year.
I kind of, I spent some timeon him a few weeks ago just highlighting
(01:53):
what he's done and yeah, he'sunder the.400 mark now.
He's batting.396 as I recordthis episode I mentioned he's got
23 home runs, 95 hits already,55 RBIs and a.493 on base percentage.
I cannot explain to you howinsane it is that that Aaron Judge
(02:16):
gets on base in just underhalf of his plate appearances.
So through 288 plateappearances that's a.493 on base
percentage.
And yeah, that leads theleague easily.
So very much on his way to anunanimous MVP with what's crazy about
(02:41):
Aaron Judge is he earlier inthe year he was leading in the triple
crown category.
He still has the league leadfor batting average, but he's three
behind American League homerun leader Cal Riley in Seattle.
He's their catcher having aphenomenal season as well.
(03:02):
Rafael Devers is leading the league.
The American League with NRBIis with 57.
That's just too ahead of Aaron Judge.
And Raphael Devers is having aweird year himself.
Kind of refusing to play incertain spots.
And the other day he hits aground ball and then just straight
(03:24):
up stops when he had thepotential to be safe.
Weird year for him.
He's still having a greatyear, but it's the tension between
Devers and the Red Sox is odd.
But while there are playersthat are having really good seasons
and we can highlight them, there's also some stuff that just
(03:44):
isn't quite going away.
I've talked about it as wellwhere there have been three managers
to be fired this seasonalready, which is three managers
to get fired before June is ahuge rarity.
And two of them, two of themanagers that got fired, you're not
surprised about Bud Black, whois leading the Colorado Rockies got
(04:09):
let go back in May and they'vewon all of five games since he left.
So clearly it wasn't a BudBlack issue, but a team issue.
That Rockies currently sit at12 and 53 trying to give the 2024
Chicago White Sox a run fortheir money.
For the worst regular seasonrecord of all time, the 2024 White
(04:34):
Sox went 41 and 121 to takeover the 1962 New York Mets long
standing record of 40 and 120.
The Rockies have managed to goon a three game win streak in June,
so that's good.
But they're basicallyaveraging four wins a month.
(04:55):
So they've got one more to winin June.
I think they can do that over20 days and then so they win four
in July.
That puts them at 16 wins, 20wins in August, 24 wins in September.
I really hope that the Rockiescan win more than 24 or 25 games
(05:21):
through the course of aregular season because I mean I just
said it.
41 and 21 and 121 is the, theworst record.
If you win 25 games you'reshattering a record that is, that's
(05:41):
like NBA bad of levels.
You've seen NBA teams that arejust how have you only won 10 games
over an 82 game schedule.
So I don't know.
I don't want MLB to, to do that.
It's a really bad look for theleague to have the White Sox break
(06:09):
the record for worst recordever last year and then the Rockies
come in this year and blow itout of the water.
And even if the Rockies levelout a little bit, whatever that means,
I still, I still think thatthey're at least going to be flirting
with all time worst team andhaving that in back to back seasons
(06:32):
is just not okay.
And got to get some of that corrected.
I mean just looking back atthe Nolan Arenado stuff and how his
handling went down, it's justI think Colorado can be a really
or I think Denver can be agreat baseball town.
It's one of my favorite parksand you got to figure it out.
(06:56):
We can't be doing what we'redoing and think it's okay.
Figure it out.
Colorado.
So next manager that wasfired, Derek Shelton, Pittsburgh
Pirates.
The only thing exciting inPittsburgh is Paul Skeens watching
him pitch.
And at this rate, he's notlong for the club.
Derek Shelton, kind of similarto Bud Black, just kind of in a situation
(07:17):
where what is he reallyexpected to do with what he's been
given?
Now, the Pirates are asignificantly better team than the
Rockies.
Obviously that's a pretty lowbar given everything that I said.
The Rockies are 26 and 14.
They're the second worst, excuse me, the third worst team in
(07:40):
the National League.
The Marlins are second worst, which, that's another team that,
my goodness, you've had twogood years in your franchise's history.
But anyway, it's gonna, it'sgonna take a change at the top for,
for the Pirates and for the Rockies.
(08:01):
Changing culture.
Ownership's got to change, front office has got to change and
it'll trickle down and that'swhat you need.
But until all of that happens, you're stuck here in this never ending
cycle of.
I was going to say mediocrity, but that would be too nice.
(08:22):
Just really bad baseball.
And if you're the Rockies inthe National League west, it's not
like it's going to just getany easier for you.
You have four teams that arepretty competitive.
Their Diamondbacks have fallenoff a little bit, but it's a three
(08:43):
team race right now in the West.
The Dodgers, Padres and Giants.
The Padres and Giants are justa game behind the Dodgers right now.
And we already know that theDodgers are going to be good for
the next 10 to 15 years andthey don't plan on slowing down anytime
soon.
I've said it a lot.
I think they are justbeginning a dynasty potentially.
(09:05):
So at least figure out a wayif you can't compete in the division,
if you're the Rockies, be awild card team.
There's three slots available there.
Same with the Pirates.
Cubs are good again.
Cardinals have kind ofsurprised me this year and figured
out a way to not be completelyawful I through June.
(09:29):
I am completely wrong on myread on the St.
Louis Cardinals.
I expected them to be awful.
They're.
They're in it.
They're four back in the Central.
Brewers respect them as well.
Team is just a perennialcontender right in the mix as well.
The National League east isinteresting Speaking of the Marlins,
(09:50):
Braves got off to thathorrible start and have really never
recovered their 10 games under.500.
But that doesn't help that theMets are the best team in baseball.
42 and 24.
That's the second best record.
It's the best record in theNational League, but second best
record in all of baseballbehind the Detroit Tigers.
And when you have the Metsplaying like they are paired with
(10:12):
the Phillies who are still agood team, you're going to be on
the outside looking in.
This is such a weird year.
And because I, I expected theDodgers and I say this like the Dodgers
aren't playing well.
They're really good.
They're three games behind theMets as far as being the best team.
(10:35):
But the Dodgers as far asdivision winners go have the third
best record that it Mets leadat 42 and 20.
Excuse me, 42 and 24.
Cubs are 40 and 25 and then 39and 27.
I would have expected theDodgers to have 45 plus wins by now
(10:56):
at least.
And we're just kind of sittinghere waiting for the postseason because
they have a 15 game lead inthe National League west at this
point.
But you got to give credit tothe Padres and Giants for what they've
(11:17):
accomplished, especially the Giants.
I'm not surprised the Padresare there talked about them, they're
kind of the, the team thatmaybe they won't win the division
but they, they're set up to compete.
And what Buster Posey is doingwith the Giants is incredible.
A nice turnaround for a teamthat we all know in the 2010s went
(11:39):
on a dynasty.
But Buster Posey's puttogether a nice team and has them
right in the mix.
So is it a foregone conclusionthat the Dodgers win the west right
now?
It's not.
And that's actually to me it'sgood for baseball that the west just
competitive because you don'twant to have massive leads and divisions
(12:03):
unofficially wrapped up thisearly in the season.
Let's look at the AmericanLeague for just a few minutes though
because I actually kind ofstrayed away from my point of managers
that have been let go.
I want to get back to that andtalk about Baltimore Orioles.
(12:24):
They let go Brandon Hydeearlier in the season kind of around
the same time that DerekShelton and Bud Black got let go.
And this was the one team Istated that those the the Rockies
and Pirates were not competitive.
The Orioles are clearly intheir competitive window.
Winners of the American Leagueeast two years ago and then wild
(12:48):
card birth last year hadliterally zero success, zero wins
through those two playoffappearances and they currently sit
in the basement of theAmerican League East 13 games out
of first place.
26 and 38.
(13:09):
Didn't quite expect BrandonHyde to be let go this early.
I did think this it he wouldget an opportunity to at least get
into the playoffs and maybe ifthey were unsuccessful again in advancing
in a round, he would be let go.
(13:29):
But you came in and were awfullargely due to pitching.
Baltimore has the some of theworst pitching in all of baseball,
so that's a huge contributorto that.
What's funny though is theyare playing good baseball right now.
They're 7 and 3 in their last 10.
But balance has been restoredin the American League West.
(13:53):
Mariners are faltering alittle bit.
I expected that to happen andthe Astros have moved their way back
up the standings and they havea two and a half game cushion in
the west now.
So the Astros are leading that division.
I'm going to pretend to beshocked that the Astros found their
(14:15):
way back to the top of thestandings in the West.
That's just what they've donesince 2017 is go to American League
championships and win AmericanLeague West Division titles.
So here we are again.
And lastly, American League Central.
I have to give my props to theDetroit Tigers as much as it pains
(14:37):
me as a Royals fan.
19 games over 543 and 24 kindof doing what I expected.
Actually they're exceedingwhat I thought the Royals would do,
but they are.
They're ahead of the Royals atthis point and I had kind of paired
(14:57):
the Tigers and Royals togetherover the last couple seasons.
Just as far as the rebuild andwhere they are and being competitive
and like last season both gotwild card births together.
This was the season to stepforward and make a run for the division.
Detroit has done that and then some.
I think if I was going to saythat a division was wrapped up it
(15:20):
would be the American League Central.
They got a seven game leadover the second place Minnesota Twins
who went on a 13 game winningstreak earlier in the season.
But 43 and 24 basicallyunstoppable at home.
23 and 9 in Comerica Park.
(15:41):
But with the Royals justpitching is phenomenal.
Top three pitching staff inall of baseball and just cannot figure
it out offensively.
You're starting to see somepositives though.
Bobby Wood Jr's good, stillgreat even and unfortunately has
(16:04):
the that guy in New York andAaron Judge that's going to steal
MVPs from him for years to come.
I think Bobby's having a greatseason though.
He's had obviously a lot ofpressure being one of the few productive
players on the roster,hitting.291, eight home runs, 37
(16:25):
RBIs of.349 on base percentage.
He's leading the league indoubles and stolen bases.
He has 22 doubles and 21stolen bases.
So continuing to do his thing there.
Vinnie Pasquintino has beenpicking it up as of late as well.
And the big thing is gettingSalvador Perez to be productive.
(16:46):
I've seen a lot of people thatare kind of calling for his head
at this point.
I think he's earned the rightto, to stink in the lineup and still
be put in the lineup.
He has a 14 year resume ofvalue and obviously isn't having
a great year this year.
I know he struck out fourtimes the other day and keeps swinging
(17:09):
at that slider.
That is low and outside.
It is frustrating withoutSalvador Perez.
He's been doing it for years.
If you look at the, the walkoff that he had in the wild card
game, it was a bad pitch, lowand outside that he put down the
third baseline.
Here we are.
It's just who he is.
He's not going to change atthe age of 45 or excuse me, 35, geez,
(17:32):
45.
But the most exciting thing Ithink is the call up of Jack Caglion
who is going to hopefully behere for years to come alongside
Bobby Witt Jr.
And maybe Vinnie Pasquintinoif they choose to extend him, which
I'm kind of up in the air withVinnie Pasquintino.
(17:54):
I think it'll be a good ideato have him, but we need health,
which he's had and we need to,yeah, just put a, put a complete
healthy season together.
But Jack Aglion gets called uplast week, makes his MLB debut against
the St.
Louis Cardinals on the road.
He's had 25 at bats, six hitsthrough those 25 at bats, has an
(18:19):
RBI.
But you gotta let him come upand just figure some things out.
You can't ask him to come uphere and be the savior of the offense.
That's not fair to him.
You have guys that have beenup here a while that need to do their
part and have Jack Caglion bean addition to your success and not
the, the fix to your failures.
(18:41):
So I think he's going to dojust fine up here.
He had a four hit day onSunday against the Chicago White
Sox and he's going to make hishome debut tonight against the New
York Yankees, which is goingto be a pretty awesome atmosphere
(19:01):
because the Yankees draw acrowd anyway.
So you pair the Yankees comingto town with the much anticipated
Jack Keglion, who by the waywas drafted less than a year ago
by the Kansas City Royals, andhe's already here.
That tells you just how goodhe is.
I know that I went over hisstats last week when we heard the
(19:24):
news of his call up, butplayed 50 games in the minors this
season and had nine doubles,15 home runs, 56 RBIs and was hitting.322
with a.389 on base percentage.
So gonna provide a lot of popand hopefully just be a great piece
(19:48):
in the meat of the order.
Apparently he wears size 17shoes as well, which is absolutely
insane.
I'm excited about the Royals, even though, yeah, maybe it's not
quite where I thought thatthey would be at this point in the
season, but I.
I am trying to look at it witha different perspective of it is
(20:10):
mid June and the Royals aregood enough to be mad about them
in mid June because the Royalshave been around for 56 years and
I would say that they've beenabsolutely awful for about 40 of
those years.
So it's nice that in 2024 wesaw them get back to the postseason
(20:34):
and then in 2025, maybethey're not doing some of the things
that we hoped that they wouldbe doing so far this season, but
pitching is there.
Think the offense will getthere and they've still got a shot
at the playoffs, but let's saythat they don't make it.
Hopefully they do.
(20:55):
We are obviously wantingChiefs football, and here in a month
and a half we'll be seeingtraining camp across the NFL, but
we're not sitting here lookingahead and man, when is that?
When is training camp?
Get us a training camp now?
(21:15):
It's at the deadline in.
At the end of July or thebeginning of August, whatever it
is this year.
It's.
The Royals need to go get abat to help this offense, go get
an outfielder to help out the offense.
They need to go get an arm forthe bullpen.
It's.
(21:36):
It's a really good place tobe, I think.
I guess what I'm saying is ifyou're frustrated about the Royals
in June, not because they'rejust completely awful, but because
they are supposed to be goodand they are good.
They're just not quite doingsome of the things that they need
to be doing.
That's a really good spot to be.
So that's what I'm going toleave you with today.
(21:59):
Thank you so much for listening.
I will see you on Thursday.
