(00:00):
Welcome into this is Baseball.
My name is Brandon Johnson.
It is good to be back.
Been out for about a week anda half.
Was on vacation last week anda lot has happened since I've last
put out an episode.

(00:21):
So got some things to discussfrom the last week and just some,
some baseball stuff that'sbeen on my mind.
Had a massive trade happenlast week.
Rafael Devers got traded fromthe Boston Red Sox over to the San

(00:43):
Francisco Giants.
I want to talk about that alittle bit.
I want to talk some KansasCity Royals and what's going on with
them.
The All Star Game is rightaround the corner.
We're less than a month outfrom that game happening out in Atlanta

(01:05):
and some managers got ejected.
Dave Roberts and Mike Schilthaving some beef with each other.
A lot to talk about.
Good to be back.
So let's just get into it.
I think the big news of theweek was the Rafael Devers trade.
Probably going to be the mostpivotal trade, most monumental trade

(01:30):
of the 2025 season.
Making a massive trade a monthplus before the trade deadline.
And this is a big deal becauseRaphael Devers signed a long term

(01:52):
deal with the Boston Red Sox.
This is from Spottrack.comRafael Devers signed a 10 year contract
extension for $313 million.
An average salary of 31million over 10 years.
He would be a free agent in 2034.

(02:13):
So locked up a long term deal.
Kind of felt like he was gonnabe the guy they were gonna build
around him.
And that seemed to be accuratego into 2025.
Alex Bregman's a free agentcoming into this season and ends
up signing a deal with theBoston Red Sox.

(02:35):
And Boston wanted RafaelDevers to move around.
There was some reluctancethere and it just seemed like there
was constantly issues betweenDevers and the Red Sox during this
season.
Thought it would be somethingthat they could maybe work out and

(02:59):
get past.
You've got your guy that youhave signed up long term.
You want him to be the face ofyour franchise and you can't keep
him happy and obviously can'tkeep the face of your franchise happy.
It's not good for anybody, especially this early on in a contract.

(03:23):
Probably should have been.
And this isn't even AlexBregman's fault.
This is obviously the frontoffice not really doing their due
diligence with Raphael Deversin bringing in Bregman and making
sure that that's somethingthat Devers is going to be willing
to do.

(03:43):
I'm of the opinion that you'reGetting paid a lot of money to play
baseball.
You should be willing to be alittle bit flexible there if you're
Raphael Devers.
But I get it.
Felt disrespected by the frontoffice and and come June, Devers

(04:05):
is traded to the San Francisco Giants.
And let's break down thattrade a little bit.
So this is from MLB.com RafaelDevers, who is the only player left
from the 2018 World Serieschampion Boston Red Sox was dealt
to the Giants for right handedpitcher Jordan Hicks and left handed

(04:25):
pitcher Kyle Harrison and apair of prospects, outfielder James
Tibbs III who's the numberfour prospect for the Giants and
Jose Bello who is a righthanded pitcher.
The Giants are actually takingon the remainder of Raphael Devers

(04:47):
contract.
So they're going to pay.
They have $250 million plusleft on that deal.
This is actually good for the Giants.
I'm glad that they did this.
They are in second place inthe National League West.
The Dodgers are kind ofstarting to pull away a little bit
in that division.
But Giants are only four and ahalf back there, but they do have

(05:07):
a pretty firm grasp on one ofthe three wild card spots right now.
So they feel like their competitors.
Obviously having RaphaelDevers added to your team not only
now but like long term will begood for the Giants.
And like I said, BusterPosey's the GM there now.

(05:28):
I'm excited to see if he canmake the Giants a perennial contender.
We obviously know that theGiants were a dynasty in the 2010s,
winning three championships.
So hopefully they can get backto their winning ways.
Obviously you're playing in adivision with the Dodgers, so already

(05:52):
not easy.
But let's talk about the RedSox a little bit.
This is now the third starthat they have let get away.
They traded Mookie Betts whowas a big part of their World Series
championship.
He was an mvp.
He ended up leaving, gettingtraded to the Dodgers, signed a long
term deal with the Dodgers andit's been one of the five best players

(06:16):
in the league in my opinion.
Xander Bogart's another playerthat maybe, maybe would be the guy
for the Red Sox.
Don't sign him.
He goes to San Diego, signs along term deal with them.
So now you have Rafael Des,who's a very good player from an

(06:36):
offensive standpoint and signhim to a long term deal.
Kind of right some of yourwrongs with some of the previous
players that you let leave thebuilding and you manage to mess that
up too.
So hopefully the Red Sox canjust kind of move past this and start

(07:01):
a new chapter and startheading in the right direction.
I do want to talk a little bitof Kansas City Royals.
As I record this, they are 38and 41, 11 and a half back in the
division.
I think that ship has sailedat this point.
They're three and a half gamesback in the wild card standings,

(07:25):
which is fine.
That's, I think the goal atthis point.
Listen, Jack Caglion finallyhit a home run.
In fact, he had two home runsin the same game.
They went into Texas, sweptTexas and lost the series in San
Diego.
But the positive is they went4 and 2 on the road trip, which you'll

(07:47):
take that every time out.
Obviously they're, you feltlike you probably could have won
the series in San Diego, butwe go glass half full there and say,
Yep, they went 4 and 2 but nowthey've got a tough stretch against
Tampa.
They already dropped oneagainst Tampa and they host the Dodgers

(08:07):
this weekend, so they've gotto figure it out.
I've seen some people that arejust calling for the Royals to be
sellers.
It is way, way, way too earlyto be declaring them out of this
thing.
As I stated, they are threeand a half games out of the wild
card, which is very, very muchin it.

(08:30):
And a lot can change betweennow and the trade deadline at the
end of July, early August, whatever day they decided to do it
this year.
So I guess, hold on, I, Ithink that, and maybe I'm gonna sound
silly by the time that we getto the trade deadline, but I do feel

(08:52):
like they can start to putsome stuff together as an offense
and score runs consistentlybecause it feels like right now they,
the offense goes dormant for aweek plus then they have a three
or four game stretch where youfeel like they're back and then it

(09:13):
just goes back to not scoringruns again.
So let's, I guess find a happy medium.
Not asking you to be the bestoffense in the league by any means,
but let's, let's be average.
At best.
You have a negative 25 rundifferential right now and having

(09:37):
a negative run differential isnot going to help you be successful.
So help your pitching staffout, score some runs.
Let's, let's be competitive.
And I would, I, I, I thinkthat the Royals are going to go to
the deadline feeling likethey're buyers unless this just gets

(09:58):
ugly and I don't see that happening.
I, I think they're going to bebuyers at the deadline and feel like
they can go get a Bullpen arm.
You can never have too much, too much pitching.
Maybe go find an outfielderthat can help you out a little bit
more consistently and get thisthing back on track.
All right, let's talk MLB AllStar Game.

(10:24):
We are less than a month outfrom the All Star break.
All Star game is Tuesday, July15, at Truest park in Atlanta.
And I think I've said thisevery year, but I still stand behind
the fact that I think MajorLeague Baseball has the best All
Star Game.

(10:44):
It is, is the closest thingthat we have to it feeling like just
a regular season game.
I know they got rid of the AllStar Game, mattering where it used
to be.
The winner of the All StarGame got home field advantage in

(11:08):
the World Series.
It's probably good that theygot rid of that.
They're also bringing backteams wearing their uniforms rather
than them having specific AllStar uniforms.
So I like that.
But no, in comparison to theNational Football League and their

(11:30):
All Star Game, the Pro bowl, that's just obviously flag football
at this point, plus someskills competitions.
But it's not something that isreally worth watching.
The NBA keeps having to goback to the drawing board because
they can't get their All StarGame right.
I think they're going to bechanging up their format again for

(11:51):
like the.
I think they do that everyyear at this point.
They just can't seem to figureit out where baseball, MLB is just
like, we're going to play,we're gonna play a baseball game
and it'll be fun.
And it's just.
For me, it's one of the onlyAll Star games that I feel like is

(12:11):
appointment television or likeI, I make a point to watch it.
Maybe not all of it, but I, Iwant to watch some of it just because
I think they do a really goodjob with the presentation of it and
the players seem to enjoy itas well.
But with the All Star Gamecoming up, obviously that means that
the All Star ballot is open.
So if you're a fan of thegame, get out there and vote.

(12:32):
Vote, vote for your favoriteplayer to make the All Star team.
I do want to just go throughthe top vote getters as of June 23.
So in the American League, atfirst base, top vote getters, Vladimir
Guerrero, with PaulGoldschmidt closely behind second

(12:52):
base.
Gleyber Torres has a prettygood handle on that.
Shortstop Jacob Wilson, rookie, having a fantastic year,
is ahead of Bobby Witt Jr.
By a pretty good margin.
So, Royals fans, you got workto do if you want Bobby Witt Jr.
To be a starter in the AllStar Game.
Jose Ramirez is the third base leader.

(13:14):
DH Ryan O'Hearn leading theway there.
Catchers Cal Riley in Seattle, who's leading the league in home
runs, having a great season aswell, so well deserved up there.
Outfielders Aaron Judgeobviously can already crown him mvp.
Riley Green for the Tigers andJavier Baez for the Tigers up there

(13:38):
as well.
Mike Trout is getting a lot ofvotes, so that is the American League.
Moving on to the NationalLeague Dodgers.
Freddie Freeman has the mostvotes at first base, and it is not
even close.
Sec, he's a million votesahead of.
Okay, maybe not quite amillion, but he is half a million

(13:59):
votes ahead of Pete Alonso forfirst base.
Second base, Cattel Marte,he's leading for the Diamondbacks
by a pretty good margin as well.
Shortstop Francisco Lindoractually beating out Mookie Betts.
Third base.
Manny Machado is in the lead there.

(14:22):
He looks like that's gonna stick.
Shohei Otani for DH RaphaelDevers, who we just talked about,
is getting a ton of votes as well.
Catcher Will Smith for the Dodgers.
So you're gonna have a lot ofDodgers, it looks like.
Starting for the NationalLeague All Star Team, outfielders

(14:45):
Pete Crow Armstrong for theCubs, Teoscar Hernandez for the Dodgers,
and Kyle Tucker for the cubs.
Ronald Acuna Jr.
Getting a ton of votes, whichis actually pretty awesome because
he's been hurt for.
He was hurt for the first sixweeks of the season.
Juan Soto getting a lot ofvotes as well.
So still plenty of time tovote, but that's the standings right

(15:10):
now.
Again, get out there, vote.
I think you can vote once aday, so do that.
So I did mention managersgetting ejected.
I'm talking about Mike Schultzof the Padres and Dave Roberts of
the Dodgers, Both two teamsthat are very good in the National
League.
They play in the same division.

(15:32):
Fernando Tatis Jr gets hit onthe wrist.
Mike Schultz takes exceptionto it.
And Dave Robertson, Mike Schilt.
The managers get into a littlebit of a shoving match, um, which
is interesting.
Uh, I think if you're themanagers, you have to be kind of
peacekeepers there and not bethe ones to go after each other.
Not the first time we've seenmanagers go at each other.

(15:56):
Uh, I remember.
Or coaches in general.
I remember Don Mattingly, MarkMcGuire, Kirk Gibson, Matt Redmond
going at each other.
Uh, I think I want to say itwas when Ian Kennedy hit Zach Grinke
in the head with a pitch whenboth of them were playing for the
Diamondbacks.

(16:16):
And Dodgers, if my memoryserves me correct.
But I don't know.
I I'm not an advocate forbenches clearing, but I think when
you have situations where thebenches are clearing, it tells me
that you care and you'recompetitive and you're going to do

(16:38):
whatever it takes andsometimes it your emotions are going
to boil over.
So I don't really have anyissues with that.
I know that both managersserved a suspension for their part
in the situation, but I don'tknow, it's kind of fun for me.
I know that NMLB benchesclearing quote unquote brawls are

(17:02):
usually nothing.
It's usually just a lot ofyelling at each other and hold me
back and shoving type of situations.
No, you know, no real punches thrown.
No Rugnetto doors punchingJose Bautista in the mouth or Jose
Ramirez punching Tim Andersonand virtually wiping him off the

(17:23):
face of the earth.
I don't really know what he hehasn't been the same.
In fact, he's been DFA'd likethree times since Jose Ramirez did
that.
But Padres and Dodgers willmeet more after the All Star break
and they'll play moremeaningful baseball.
So we'll see if some of theseissues boil over into the next series
that they play against each other.

(17:45):
There's a pretty goodopportunity that they're going to
see each other in thepostseason as well.
So if you want to see a heatedrivalry in 2025, pay attention.
Mark it on your calendar toplay to see the Dodgers and Padres
play against each other.
So that's all I have this week.

(18:06):
Really good to be back at it.
I am excited for what iscoming up.
We're really getting into theback half of the season here sooner
than we realize, and that'swhen everything gets really fun to
cover.
So continue to tune in as someof these playoff races heat up and

(18:31):
I will see you next week.
