He's taken where I'm your host,rob miranda.
It's been a minute since beenon the podcast, but I came back
for the all-new karate kidlegends movie.
So join me.
It's been on I think the firsttime this year.
Yep, uh, mr brandon knight.
Thank you for coming on,brandon.
Of course it's good to timethis year.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yep, mr Brandon
Knight thank you for coming on,
brandon.
Of course it's good to be back.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
I'm trying to
remember the last time you were
on.
I know you were on for what'sthat?
Board game.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Dungeons Dragons,
dungeons, dragons, but you were
on after that, I believe.
We did Alien Romulus.
That's what it was, yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Was that you, I think
so we did the second.
We did the original Alien movie.
That's what it was.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
We did Aliens 2.
Yeah, and Romulus yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Which I've watched
like three times since then.
It still holds up.
It's so good.
It still holds up, and Iactually wanted to talk to you
about this.
This is one of the topics I'vewritten down, sure.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Do you even hear
about the new show coming on
hulu, aliens I?
I have heard, I've heard aboutit and, adjacent to aliens, I'm
very excited for all thepredator.
There's two predator moviescoming out this year too, and
I'm excited for both of them youknow, the last one was prey
right yeah, yeah, I wasn't a fanof prey.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
I'm like in the okay
out of the normalcy for that.
Like I didn't like the preybecause like okay, part of the
guy taken down by a dog.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
That's true.
Yeah, fair point.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
But you know, aliens,
I love the franchise.
I never watched the franchisebefore the podcast, before Alien
rhymed with this really.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Sure.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
And then this one
takes place right before the
first Alien the show comes out.
It's going to take place rightbefore the watch it in too Nice,
which I'm definitely going togo through before I watch the
show.
It's a lot and for even beingin the 70s movies, it still
holds up.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
It still holds up
very well, oh yeah, that first
one is Part of it is thepractical effects element.
I think that really helps keepthings grounded and real.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
The Alien Rhyme is
the actress who plays the
pregnant late girl.
Yes, I can't remember her name.
Do you know?
You know what I'm talking about, right?
Speaker 2 (02:08):
yeah, yeah, yeah, she
was Dora the Explorer.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
She's huge coming up
like she's gonna be the new
Superman movie the new.
Peacemaker movie.
She's a hawk girl.
She was just in something elsethat I've seen not too long ago.
She's blowing up.
I think she's the biggest oneof the whole franchise that
movie that came out.
I love her and I love everyonewith the android in the Alien
(02:31):
Realm he's coming out withsomething that I really wanted
to see, was it the long walk?
You know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
I haven't heard of
that one.
It's a Stephen King.
Oh okay, it's the long walk.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Literally all it is
is people walking the people
walking the entire movie andit's like a competition.
I don't know if it's governmentfunded or or what, because they
have like tanks and army menfollowing them.
All you're doing is walk.
There's no finish line.
There's like a group of 20 guysor more or something like that.
Okay, you're walking untilthere's only one of you left,
but if you stop walking, if youlock these rules like if you go
(03:00):
below three miles per hour, ifyou stop stop more than 10, 15
seconds, they kill you.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Oh, okay, yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, it's intense
and it looks good.
You think you could do iteasily, but no, you don't
realize how long you have towalk for You're trying to
outlast everybody else.
There's people getting cramps.
There's people who are hurtingthemselves, who die from
dehydration, they collapse.
Wow, it's so simple, but itlooks genius, are?
Speaker 2 (03:22):
you a Stephen King
guy?
Do you like Stephen King'sstuff?
Speaker 1 (03:25):
I am becoming a
Stephen King fan.
Not enough to actually go readthe books or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
His books are
ginormous, so I don't blame you
for that.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
I heard they might be
redoing the Shining, if I'm not
mistaken.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
I mean it would
probably be about time.
Yeah, they've done it, they didthe reboot of it.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Speaking of it, penny
, I'm like nerding out right now
like it's been a minute talkingabout this stuff.
Penny, why is this show'scoming out soon?
Yeah, I heard about the dairy, dairy, dairy.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Where's that?
Where's that coming, hey?
Speaker 1 (03:54):
max max, I don't okay
I want to say within a month or
two.
Okay, or maybe it was like thisfall, it could be around
halloween time sure um, I'm nota big it fan because it
terrifies me, but it looksfucking good.
Nice, it looks good actually, like all those movies are good.
You know, also a horror movielooks good.
I'm not.
Are you in a horror movie likethat?
Yeah, a little bit.
Uh, I've seen the trailer forthe new conjuring movie oh, I
(04:16):
haven't seen that one yet I'veseen that in trailers like yeah
for movies play and
Speaker 2 (04:19):
um, it looks
terrifying oh really it looks
terrifying.
The final, the final one.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah, it's supposed
to be their last case, I believe
, and um, you know there's apodcast based on that couple.
I'm excuse me if I forget theirname, but um ed and lorraine
warren warren.
Yeah, there's a podcast thatgoes through all their cases and
songs oh, yeah, yeah, themovies does exaggerate a lot of
it, but it's still interesting.
Like I'm not even a big for I'mterrified of these movies, but
(04:48):
I'm so fascinated because thestory is so interesting- yeah,
they're very interesting people, and Annabelle is apparently
lighting things on fire in thesouth as we speak.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, fuck.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Speaking of horror,
did you see horror shows?
Did you see there's's a?
I think Peacock's getting aCrystal Lake.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Part of the Friday
the 13th universe yeah, I think
it's like a Prequel and um she'sthis actress I can't remember
her name Is playing his mother.
The one who's like she playedum Velma In Scooby Doo, in the
James Gunn Scooby Doo.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Oh, okay, sure.
In Scooby-Doo and the JamesGunn Scooby-Doo oh, okay, sure.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
She's also Hawkeye's
wife in MCU.
Yeah, yeah, I can't rememberher name, but she's playing his
mother.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Okay, that's awesome.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
I don't know if I
heard the casting for Jason
himself or what.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I mean, I imagine it
would just be some kid.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Some movies that I've
recently seen that did not make
the podcast.
I see Mission Impossible seemission impossible I'm gonna go
do like many reviews with themlater, but mission impossible.
If you're a big fan of missionimpossible, I think you would
love it me.
It was all right.
It was okay.
I'm gonna forget about it.
Okay by next year.
Um, I also saw the new lilo andstitch.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
I'm kind of surprised
you haven't seen that I know
it's been hard for us to get tothe movies this year.
My son's three now, so it takesup.
He takes up a lot of our time.
How was it?
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I'm really helpful
you know what it's for your
son's age.
It's pretty good okay I'm moreupset about the changes they
made.
Yeah, you know, it's just liveaction in general sure it's live
action I'm not happy with umthey cut out a lot of things
that I didn't like.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
I heard captain gantu
is not even like in the movie,
right even reference or anythinglike that.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Okay and the
directors say they wanted
captain more grounded and havingthat big alien running around
just wouldn't do it Interesting.
You know this is spoilers, butLilo does get taken by the CPS
at the end.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
But it's given to the
neighbor right next door.
And what's her name?
Nani goes to college.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Oh, okay, and people
are furious about that.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Interesting, I've
seen a tiktok someone like how
can you just give up your sisterlike that?
I was like first of all shedidn't give him up, like it's a
trust, like this family, herneighbor's, like a family gotcha
I was like it's not like she'sgiving to a stranger.
You know like I'm talking about.
Like she's 18 and like you knowyou can tell like they
portrayed her as like someonewho was very athletic and she
had a full ride to college andthen their parents died so she
had to like stop everything totake care of her sister I was
(07:11):
like god forbid she continuewith her life yeah and you know
she was prepared to take on allthat and she could.
Actually.
The whole movie was how shecouldn't do that like she
couldn't sure, hold on job.
It's like the original andpeople were shitting on her.
I was like relax dude.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
I like the movie Like
.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Ohana's not a thing
in this movie.
I was like shut up.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
If anything.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
It's more of a thing
because, like the neighbor's,
more like Ohana with them.
You know Gotcha.
Okay, yeah, there's a lot ofcomplaints.
I've seen.
You know who Tim Robinson isthe oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I've
seen his movie with Paul RuddFriendships yeah, okay, how was
that?
I laughed so hard in the movietheater.
Oh, okay, it's the funniestmovie I've seen all year long.
(07:50):
Okay, if you like Tim Robinson,he made stuff like I Think you
Should Leave on Netflix.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
A couple other
sketches.
He worked on SNL for a while.
It's totally his type of humor, brandon, like not a lot of
people were in this theater, butyeah, who those were?
We were all laughing almost theentire time.
Really, it is so funny.
I've been trying to go see itagain with my show.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
It's new people as
much as I can I'm I'm split on
that one.
I don't think I'm into theminority on this one.
I don't think Robinson is funnybut, with Paul Rudd in the
movie with that killer mustache.
Okay, yeah, sign me up.
Sign me up.
You know what?
Speaker 1 (08:25):
I gave it a 3.5 out
of 5 stars.
And the only reason?
His humor is not for everybody.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
If it was more
genuinely loved by every single
person, I would give it a 5 outof 5 stars.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Because I loved it so
much personally.
That's why I give it a higherrating.
Paul Rudd yeah, he was afraidof like people would like
confuse him with his character, with his Anchorman character,
because he looks the same.
And he plays a weatherman too.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Oh, does he really?
Yeah, that's hilarious yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
So I mean them
together.
Paul Rudd, he was hilarious, but Tim Robinson stole the show.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
He was so funny in
this movie with his facial
expressions and everything.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
There was another new
movie that I've seen recently
that I've seen, but I've beenwatching a lot of shows actually
.
Oh, yeah, uh, severance.
I caught up on that.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
I talked about that
on this podcast not, yet I'm a
we're both big fan.
My wife and I are big fans ofum adam scott.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Adam scott, thank you
, he's great, um, and I also
just finished the studio withseth rogan on apple tv too.
Oh okay, that is great.
It, it's phenomenal, it's it's.
Have you seen, or at least knowof not Community what's?
Speaker 2 (09:31):
one of those.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
Like he co-wrote it
Jerry's Seinfeld show with them.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Oh, larry Burr, Larry
David, with Curb your
Enthusiasm, it's similar humorto that.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
I feel like, oh,
enthusiasm, it's similar humor
to that.
I feel like, okay, but with ahigher production, okay kind of
thing.
Like you know, seth rogan playsthis new studio head who, like
studio head, is like he's a headin charge of like universal or
warner brothers, you know hetakes over one of those, and the
whole thing is like him tryingto please everybody while trying
to also make great movies.
Um, and it's hilarious.
Okay, just renewed for seasontwo.
(10:02):
I cannot wait for this there's aton of celebrity cameos in
there, like directors martin, somartin scorsese's in there, wow
, um, jeez, louise, I'm gonnakill me for forgetting some of
these directors in there.
But also like anthony mackie'sin there oh nice.
Um, you know a few, a few bigname celebrities are nice, I
like apple scott's in there too.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Oh, adam scott shows
up too.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
I like apple tv plus.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
They're called all
with bangers.
I think they've got some reallygood stuff both for, like,
adults and also kids.
My, my son, watches a coupleshows I never knew that.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Um, they actually I
want to say they come out
bangers.
But they just came out withlike a couple flops with um john
krasinski's new movie, umfountain of youth I haven't seen
it yet, but I've heard nothingbut bad things oh okay, um miles
teller and anna taylor joy hada movie on apple tv that came
out early this year and, um, Ihaven't seen it either.
(10:49):
I heard very minimal thingsabout it and then nothing at all
.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Okay, it's yeah, I
like that.
Uh, I like their movie ghosted.
That's the one with chris evans.
It's kind of it's like that'swhat's her name in there too.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Um, I can't think of
her name right now she she's
coming out next week withBallerina.
Yeah, oh yeah yeah, yeah, Ididn't like that.
Well, because I don't like her,I don't like her.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
Oh, that's the big
thing.
I thought it was fun.
It was like a Hallmark movie.
But make it spy, you know, ispretty funny.
Um, I think they make better tvshows than movies because they
have ted lasso too, and oh, tedlasso is amazing.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Yeah, they're coming
with the fourth season.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
That's all.
Yeah, we'll have to see.
I don't know if it's gonna bemore about um keely and like the
development of the uh, likewomen's soccer team that they
teased at the end of that season, then I think I would be into
it.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
That's what jason
sudeikis.
He went on the new heightspodcast and okay he teased that
a little bit.
It's going to be focused moreon the woman's that's awesome
sports, which is perfect timingbecause you got caitlin clark
and that rivalry with um alexsomething oh, yeah, yeah, going
on right now too.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
So I think it's
perfect timing.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
I hope they've like
teased some of that stuff in
there too, um, but we're here totalk about it's a karate kid.
We're gonna talk about theoriginal karate kid first and
then we're gonna go into the newkarate kid legends and talk
about the franchise a little bit.
But, brandy, you're the perfectperson to do this because you
do study kung fu and karate andstuff like that, right?
Speaker 2 (12:14):
I do.
Yeah, I'm a martial artist, been doing martial arts for over
20 years now.
I have black belts in fourdifferent martial arts black
belts.
That's impressive, thank you.
I'm also with one of the localYMCAs in the area.
They have a program calledNinja Zone and I'm a coach for
that, teaching kids kind of thiscombination of parkour and
(12:35):
martial arts.
It's really similar to AmericanNinja Warrior, that game show
but, for kids is a lot of whatmy job is, I mean as an adult.
That sounds fun too.
Oh, it's a, it's so fun.
I've lost so much weight too,and doing it it's good exercise.
It is, it is.
And then I do have a.
Since the last time I was here,I started a new podcast called
kung fu pizza party, where Ireview martial art movie shows
(12:58):
or martial art, movies and showsand other things like that.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
So yeah, you know,
people like some I told somebody
about that, actually not toolong ago.
Because I knew you were comingon the podcast and I was like,
how many movies can you reviewdoing that topic?
I was like you'd be surprisedhow many kung fu karate movies
there are.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Yeah, there's a lot.
And you know, sometimes I'mkind of like skirting the lines,
a little bit of like it's anaction movie but it's got really
good fight sequences in it, butlike, oh yeah, there's so many
movies that you could talk aboutthere.
But yeah, actually on the show.
I just finished up as we'rerecording this, I've done all of
the movies, all of the karatekid movies leading up to this
(13:36):
one.
I still need to yeah, I stillneed to do the record my
thoughts on the karate kidlegends film, but okay, this is
a good pre-teaser.
I actually have another showthat was like hey, do you want
to also come on here?
Yeah, everyone's like, you'renow the Karate Kid guy, so
please come talk.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Speaking of those
movies, my girl was just telling
me on a couple of movies likeKarate Kid movies.
We just watched Ip man.
Okay, yeah, yeah, have you seenthose movies?
Speaker 2 (14:05):
I've seen the first
two.
We just watched the first one.
Yeah, that first one isconsidered like one of the
modern, all-time greats of kungfu movies you know, it's like a
live-action anime, if you look alittle bit yeah it's kind of
ridiculous and silly.
But trust me, they get a littlebit more ridiculous and silly.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
And the next one he's
gonna fight mike tyson mike
tyson plays like this, like Ican't even remember mike tyson
himself, isn't it, or someone'splaying mike tyson, no?
Speaker 2 (14:29):
mike tyson is acting
in the movie.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
I forget what
character he plays, but yeah
that's hilarious I gotta watchthat now yeah yeah damn, I
didn't know mike tyson was likethat.
That's funny.
Mike tyson does a lot ofsurprising things like you don't
he was like that.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
He had that cartoon
remember yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
mike tyson mysteries orsomething like that, yeah, yeah
so when you watch these karatekid movies, do you like not
karate, just karate movies ingeneral like do you get like
inspired, like oh shit, I wantto try that move.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Or like now that
they're doing it totally wrong.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Or a little bit of
both.
Um.
There are times where I watchstuff, uh, and I'm like man I
would really like to, like I'vedone a lot of korean martial
arts, taekwondo, hopkido, so Iwould really like to uh, spend
some time training in uh kung fuat some point.
Um, but with the karate kidmovies specifically, the like,
(15:22):
oversimplification is that theseare all pretty good movies
until you get to the final thirdtournament scene and then the
wheels fall off, like it doesget very cinematic during those
that last little bit Um, haveyou yourself done tournaments
like that?
A little bit, yeah, a littlebit, here and there I would say
the.
The tournaments that you see, like in the original trilogy
(15:45):
with Ralphalph mafia mafia, ralph machio you can't say his
name uh, in the first and thirdmovie is a little bit more
traditional to what I haveexperienced.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
We'll get to it with
yeah, I was not happy with that.
I was not happy with theupcoming one, but we'll talk
about that yeah yeah, um is yourson.
You're pushing that on your sonyet you know well it is funny.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
I mean like if you
start training now, it could be
like the new bruce lee.
He could be the new new brucelee.
He's only three.
Uh, you know it a little bit,not like pushing it on him, but
like there was one day I wascleaning something out and I
found one of my old kick padsthat I like used to train with
and I was gonna take it to workbecause we do have.
(16:28):
We do some like fun kick stuffat ninja zone and I was walking
by my son saw it and heinstinctively knew what to do
with it.
He was like punch.
I was like here you go.
So it's in his room now andthen and he brings it out every
once in a while.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
You're going to get a
call in a couple of years like
he's bullying the first graders.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
he's like he has started an
illegal fight club in the secondgrade and I take him to.
You know he comes with me towork.
There's like a daycare he canstay at while I'm on the clock,
but I usually take him into myarea first and let him kind of
like run around, explore, climbaround a little bit, so he may
turn into a martial artist, hemay turn into a gymnast because
(17:09):
there's a little bit of that too.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Do both, you know, be
a stuntman when he grows up?
That would be sick, actuallythat would be really tight, you
know.
Speaking of that, they justadded stunt choreography, um I
heard about the oscars.
Yeah, I heard for the firsttime ever that that's really
exciting, which is somethingRyan Gosling really pushed for
last year with his movie thestunt man the fall guy, the fall
guy yeah.
Yeah, that's exciting news.
You know, like, have you everthought about doing that, or
(17:33):
could you do something like that?
You think I?
Speaker 2 (17:38):
so when I was like in
high school that um stunt work,
I thought it was really cool.
There's this old he's passedaway now but there was this guy
named judo gene labelle who wasa stunt man from like the 50s
all the way until like 2010 orsomething he was like an old man
still doing stunt work and hewas black belt in judo, was a.
(18:01):
it had one of the first, earliest mma fights, so he was
very inspirational for me.
But nowadays I would reallylike to be the fight
choreographer.
That's kind of where I'm at now.
It'd be really cool to sequencethat fight in a movie.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
You know what?
I had somebody on this podcast.
As a matter of fact, youmentioned this comic behind me.
He starred in the short filmit's sci-fi.
But I this comic behind me,yeah, he started in a short film
Like some guy around here, Likeit's sci-fi, but I'll let him
know.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Like, hey, if you
want a choreography fight, I'll
hook you up If Kung Fu PizzaParty gets big enough, if it
continues to grow.
I have thought about like maybewe could do like a Kickstarter
and do like a short film kind ofthing.
But yeah, let them know, zachbraff does that all the time
does he really?
Speaker 1 (18:44):
I don't know that.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Yeah, like half of
his movies are are kickstarted
like um is that how we'regetting the new scrub seasons?
I don't know about that he'sgonna be in it right yeah, yeah,
they just, I don't know if he'shelping make it.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
He was in it cool, uh
, let's talk about the karate
kid franchise for a minute surethis is the sixth movie.
Can you believe that I know this?
Karate kid one, two, three, uh,the 2010 karate kid, the next
karate kid and now we're atkarate kid legend.
It has a spin-off series, cobrakai.
That started on youtube, thatpicked up on netflix, has an
animated show in 1989 on nbcthat only lasted 13 episodes but
(19:21):
that was also more of an originkind of for mr miyagi
interesting, but if it lasts forone season, probably not that
interesting.
Had a broadway musical uhadaption that just came out in
2022.
And he has two video games withthe voice actors from the
original trilogy reprising theirvoices.
Oh, that's cool.
Yeah, this franchise is huge.
And to think, like, how muchare they milking this?
Speaker 2 (19:43):
how much more do you
think we can get?
Speaker 1 (19:44):
from this.
I don't know if they're.
Have you seen?
I haven't seen cobra kai, butafter watching these movies I
want to get into that I've seen.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
I think I watched the
first season like way back.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
I need to actually
get all caught up 2015 yeah,
yeah, when youtube had astreaming service.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Yeah, does everybody
remember that one?
Speaker 1 (20:00):
it still does um, but
netflix picked it up because it
was solid, yeah, you guys gotsomething here.
Um, the things that I loveabout these this ralph macchio
and william zabtka.
William zabtka, dude, theyfully embrace his characters.
They love this franchise and, like everyone, I love that.
They love it.
You know, they make it so muchmore fun versus, like some
(20:22):
people who are getting like arole and they're so tired of
being known for that one thing, sure they, they embrace it, they
like they go.
I'm sure they go to karatetournaments too and stuff like
that I am special guests orsomething like that.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
I imagine I've seen
them.
I think they've done c2e2before.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
I think zapka has at
least yeah I want to say they
both have actually I don't knowabout the same time, but yeah,
yeah, and some of the people oncobra kai actually yeah, I think
so like actors um, I haven'tseen them um, but I love how
much they love the franchiseyeah it's, it's cool it meant
actually mr miyagi himself toolike yeah he passed away.
I want to say it was 2012, he'ssomewhere in there yeah, yeah,
(20:57):
yeah, but man cartoon, abroadway musical, two video
games.
I don't even know what thevideo can be about.
Like it's, like I'm picturinglike a mortal kombat kind of
style, I think.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
So there was one.
One of them came out prettyrecently because it's on the
switch oh, is it?
Speaker 1 (21:11):
yeah, that's probably
.
That's probably before this.
Then it's probably three videogames out there yeah, okay um,
you know, the director, johnevanson, of the first one, the
first three actually, he, hedirected rocky and rocky five.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Oh, love that the
same actor.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Okay, and you know
what?
The crazy thing?
In 2012,.
Ralph Macchio, this is beforeCreed and before Cobra Kai.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
He was approached to
do a crossover movie with Rocky
franchise.
Interesting it was going to beDaniel's daughter, daniel Lewis'
daughter and Rocky Jr openingup a dojo together.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Interesting but Ralph
was like this plot sucks.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
I'm not doing this,
so it was scrapped.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
That doesn't sound.
I like the concept of bringingthose two universes together.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
That, specifically,
does not sound great especially
because, like you know, like thefirst, if you look at it, the
first rocky film and the trilogy, it's similar directing styles
yeah, it can be the same worldyou know yeah, yeah, one was
like in Philly and you know, yeah, yeah, that would have been
sick.
You know.
Not even nothing crazy, likejust the references, like oh,
Rocky's also on the news, orsomething like that.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Sure, yeah, yeah,
yeah, that would have been sick.
Speaker 1 (22:23):
It was like a
newspaper with him in.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
Probably the better
decision.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
The better decision.
That franchise.
They're getting an anime.
Do you know about that?
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Are they really?
No, I didn't know that Creed'sgetting an anime.
Michael B Jordan's doing it.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Oh, that's cool.
Also, who's getting an anime isthe John Wick movies.
They're getting a John Wickanime prequel.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
They're really trying
with John Wick, aren't they?
Speaker 1 (22:43):
Dude, they had such
success with John Wick 4.
Four yeah, we got the ballerina, we got the continental show on
peacock.
Uh, they come with this anime.
I want to say they justannounced john wick five, if I'm
not mistaken and they'resupposed to be one with, um,
that blind guy.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
donnie yen's character dude
crazy, they're the same thing.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
They're milking these
franchises like makes a little
bit of money versus sinner.
Have you seen sinner?
Speaker 2 (23:05):
oh, you haven't seen
it not yet I, I do want to
phenomenal, phenomenal movie.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Ryan Coogler did a
great job.
He has openly expressed that hedoes not want to make a
franchise out of that, which heeasily could, because a lot of
people want more Sure.
He said he has no interest indoing sequels.
He's done with that becausehe's done Black Panther movies.
He's done some other big movie.
I'm sorry I can't rememberright now.
I can't remember right nowCreed.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,
creed.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
He's done with
franchises and you know if he
doesn't do another movie likethat, respect to him.
I have seen a couple of postssaying that there is going to be
sequels or spinoffs orsomething like that.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
I don't know how true
they are, because I don't how
Ryan's been speaking so openlyabout not wanting to do unless
they're gonna do it without him.
It's such the norm anymore totry and launch a whole cinematic
universe, multi-platformuniverse thing that like now
we've gotten to the point wherelike hey, good for him that he
just wants to do like his onemovie, yeah, move on and he also
(24:04):
made history with that movietoo, because when he is made
with warner brothers, okay, um,he is going to own the rights to
the sinners movie in 20 years, which has never been done before
, no one's no studio has everoff like willingly gave that,
gave that back up, which to meI'm assuming.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
They probably
lowballed him then.
But in 20 years maybe he willmake another movie 20 years yeah
, that's the goal, yeah, yeah umfun.
Other fun facts daniel larussowas originally going to be
daniel weber and johnny lawrencewas originally going to be
donald donald rice oh, he dodgeda bullet donald rice definitely
that's bad I'm assuming danielweber was changed because they
hired, uh um ralph macchio, whosure that seems like a white
(24:43):
name yeah, it's not white, uhpat marita marita, is that how
you say it?
yeah, yeah, uh, who plays mr miywas the director's first choice
, but at this time his creditswere mostly sitcoms like Happy
Days, mash, sanford and Son.
He also did stand-up comedy, Ibelieve, but the producers
turned him down because theythought the audiences wouldn't
take him serious enough for thecharacter, and it wasn't until
(25:05):
Pat grew out his facial hair andadded the accent where they
changed his mind.
Until pat grew out his facialhair and added the accent where
they changed his mind, I never,I, when I think of this
character, his actor, pat, Idon't think about the other
stuff.
Well, mostly because I was waybefore time, sure, but he's
always, always gonna be mrmiyagi to me.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Oh yeah, perfect
casting oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
he's.
And you know what?
Speaker 1 (25:23):
what's great about it
is that he is still funny, it's
not first yeah, you know he'sserious and then he's funny, but
like I think when you add theaccent like it just adds a bunch
of wisdom to his character.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
It does.
Yeah, it does, because I'veseen I have seen some of his
like older stuff before KarateKid and like yeah, he doesn't.
He had to add the accent.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
He just sounds yeah,
which if he didn't do it someone
else is gonna do it.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Yeah, you know, and
it's hard to think of this
universe without pat maritabeing mr miami.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
Yeah, yeah I don't
think jackie chan needed to add
his accent to like make thecharacter his character, but I
think it made helped it a littlebit.
I don't know um the song you'rethe best at the end, the front,
the montage was originallywritten for rocky 3, but it was
replaced for eye of the tigerand it bounced around a few
(26:21):
different movies before itlanded on the third act in
karate kid that's so interesting.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
I love that kind of
like music history.
Right, you know, I the tigerman, I forgot I.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
I did rocky.
You know there was a couplegreat.
That's so interesting.
I love that kind of musichistory stuff.
Right, I did Rocky.
There was a couple great factsabout that song with that.
Okay, last fun fact I got herethe extras at the end of the
tournament were so caught up inthe tournament that they would
boo William Zapka even when theyweren't filming.
And Zapka's mother was in thecrowd trying to keep telling
(26:50):
people that he's actually reallynice in real life.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
That's awesome.
I didn't know that.
That's really funny.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
And Rolf, the last
one, actually the very last one.
Rolf named his son Daniel, inreal life too.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Oh, okay, that's how
much he loves the franchise.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
Yeah, yeah, I'm sure
he has another movie.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
I know he has another
movies.
He does have one.
I'm struggling to think of whatit's called right now, but
there's one where he's like ablues guitar player.
Yes, I can't think of what thatmovie is called right now.
That one's really good too.
It is at first like you're thekarate kid do some karate, but
as it goes on, like it's.
That one is a really good movie.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
I can't think of what
it's called, though, now,
because he even has to like beatthe devil in a guitar blues
thing, like yeah, yeah, yeahwell if much it just has good
genes too, because like he'sdoes not age, he's like paul
rudd kind of the way he doesn'tage so much.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
His voice still
sounds like he hasn't gone
through puberty he's.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Uh, I think he was 22
during the first movie.
Okay, mr Miyagi was 51.
Okay, doesn't he look way olderthan 51?
.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Yes, he does.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
Like that's just like
, I don't know because his hair,
I don't know what he did withit, but like dude, our
generation just ages a lotslower than they did back in the
day.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
I guess so.
Yeah, dude, our generation justages a lot slower than they did
back in the day.
I guess so, yeah, yeah, likeyou just said, paul Rudd, you
could also throw Tom Cruise inthere.
Those men are ageless somehow.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
It's insane to think
22 years old Jackie Chan, on the
other hand he was looking oldin this movie.
Dude.
I think he looked older in theKarate Kid movie in the 2010.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Karate movie.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
Oh, the 2010 movie I
think he looked older then
versus now, really, in thismovie he looked semi-decent,
versus if you're seeing aninterview with him or him on the
street or something like that.
I think he looks a lot older inreal life.
It's a lot of movie makeupthough.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Yeah, yeah, that's
true.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
But you know, I read
Jackie Chan sold out his own
sons in this movie.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
I think he did most.
Speaker 1 (28:51):
He did do an
interview where he said like
yeah, I'm starting to have touse some stunt men here and
there, but like he's in his 70s,like that was gonna be one of
my fat, like things are gonnabring up later yeah, but I can
talk about now.
There is a scene with him andralph macchio.
I totally talk about the use.
Some people I yeah, yeah, yeah.
I was like because he suchclose-ups to the fight and
everything like that they'reobviously not showing their face
.
They're going out of their wayto show.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
It's just like the
arms yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
It was just on people
, but let's go into the Karate.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Kid.
It came out in 1984.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
I freaking love this
movie.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
It's iconic.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
It's iconic and I
really wanted to go through and
watch all three of them again, but I didn't want to like over
claw my thoughts about the firstone.
Sure, sure, sure, but 1984'scame out.
It's about recently relocatedto new jersey to la, daniel
becomes the target of a gang ofa cobra kai dojo students.
When mr miyagi saves him fromthe expert karate skills, daniel
convinces him to teach him todefend himself and bullies put
(29:47):
the bullies in their place.
Directed by john g avidson andwritten by robert mark car came
in.
Uh believe, let me see realquick.
I have some facts.
90 on raw tomatoes budget ofeight million dollars gross over
300 million dollars oh my goshpat morita was nominated for
best supporting actor from thismovie, which I believe was the
(30:09):
only type of Oscar won.
They got Not even one.
It was just nominated.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Ralph was 22.
Pat was 52.
Okay, the idea of this moviecame from producer Jerry
Weintraub when watching the newsin 1983 about a Scronatine
bully who became a martialartist.
Pretty much the exact samemovie, and I wonder if they ever
reached back to that guy orlooked up that guy like hey like
we'll give you some money forthis.
(30:36):
Another fun fact before we getinto the movie the opening
scenes where the kids arechasing the car down the street
waving goodbye to johnny and hismom.
Um, those are just kids fromthe neighborhood.
They were all hanging aroundset interviewing and interfering
with the shoot and the directoroffered to put them in the
movie if they leave the castalone so that's a trade-off,
yeah trade-off and those kidsare probably still out there
somewhere.
I wonder, like who's someone,how?
(30:56):
you know, I was in that movie, you know I would like to be an
extra in a film that would be mylife goal like I don't even
care if I get a speaking line,if I could just point like an
especially mcu movie oh, yeah, yeah if I'm just running from
something I would fucking lovethat.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
That's me in the
crowd behind Batman over there.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Dude, I don't know,
if you remember in 2016, or
ahead of in 2015, at the timethey were doing open casting
calls for Civil War.
Okay, just college students, yeah yeah, I'm assuming for that
MIT scene.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Well, first of all,
it was dark.
You couldn't even see any ofthe kids, anyway, I submitted
like oh yeah yeah, like yougotta like take pictures and
stuff like that I wanted to goback.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
I think we were in
high school by this point when,
uh, they were shooting publicenemies up here in crown point.
Yeah, I, and johnny depp was onset for that, for some of those
scenes.
I remember that was a prettybig thing.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
He came up here that
like for those you know, like
that's where they shot, thatthat's about like 15 minutes
away from here, and uh, he didcome on set.
It was a big thing.
A lot of the extras you see onthere are just people who live
around the area too.
All it is is like they'redriving a car and he's driving
by.
A bunch of people like yeahcheering for him, which is
probably the real life cheeringfor johnny dot yeah uh, pat
(32:07):
morito designed the bonsai logothat was sewn into daniel's g do
you have your own g?
Speaker 2 (32:11):
anything cool on
there uh, I do so, my old one
from taekwondo.
It does have a couple differentpatches on it.
Um, most of the geese I've wornover the years are just solid
black okay, yeah damn, you needsomething cool on there.
I do need something cool onthere, you just put your own
podcast logo on there yeah, itmight do that.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
That might be fun um
in the studio one.
This is a couple facts aboutthis movie before we get into it
the studio wanted the drunkmiyagi scene dropped from this,
drop from the movie, but thedirector fought for it and kept
it in, and he felt that was thescene that got pat morita
nominated for an oscar that wasa good call dude that movie.
I read that before I watchedthat scene.
(32:51):
It added so it grounded thecharacter so much.
Oh yeah, because before, likeyou used to, yeah, this is just
some old man who was trying toget some work done around his
house, but like no, like hegenuinely cares, he has a heart.
You know it's crazy.
William zapka revealed thatduring the rehearsals, martin
coved, his, his teacher orsensei, uh, delivered, sweep the
(33:14):
leg line in a calm manner.
But when they filmed it he saidin such a cold voice that when
everyone was shocked, everyone, including zapka, which whose
expression was on screen for thefirst time, hearing it oh,
interesting okay yeah, he didlike.
I read that and I watched thatscene again and it does add a
lot to that scene.
And last fact I got for thisone the night yellow 1984 super
(33:38):
deluxe that daniel wax and itwas given to ralph by the
producer in real life and hestill owns it.
William zapka still owns thered leather jacket too oh cool I
like that you know.
They say like you never knowwhen a movie is going to be like
a big hit I'm yeah, dude, theway they talk about it and the
way like they have all thesegifts from there, I think they
knew they had a hit from theget-go I don't know if they knew
(34:00):
they had a 84 to 2025 what isthat?
Speaker 2 (34:05):
41 years?
I don't know if they knew theyhad a 40 plus year franchise on
their hands, but yeah, thisseems like they had some inkling
of we got something specialhere.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
Dude, this franchise
is everything I mean.
Let me go through the movie now.
They live in New Jersey.
Starting off in the beginningof the movie, they moved to
California because the mom got anew job with her computers.
That's all this computer job.
This is the conspiracy theorythat, dude, the mom doesn't have
a job like she, she.
They moved to new york as acomputer job.
(34:36):
But then there's a scene whereshe's like she gets a job as a
waitress manager yep, becausethey good benefits.
I was like she did not have ajob moving out, she had her own
movie going on like we'reprobably getting away from
abusive ex or of X or somethinglike that, Something.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
yeah, that's true.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
And then you know,
ralph of course hates it.
You know what?
Speaker 2 (34:54):
kid likes leaving
their family.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
Oh yeah, she tries to
.
At least you can get away fromthe winners, but I like the
winners, no, you don't I hatethe winners.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
I cannot.
Speaker 1 (35:01):
I hate the winners,
so it ends up going.
The maintenance is actually mrmiyagi himself, which is dude.
I watched this and then I thinkI watched uh the 2010 karate
movie.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
It's almost exactly
the same, except they moved to
china yes, yeah, yeah, the setupbetween the two is pretty
similar.
Those two the karate kid andthen the 2010 one have the most
similarities of the threereboots yeah yeah, yeah um, mr
miyagi, just like this, notcranky or anything, he just does
(35:35):
his own thing.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
He has like no words
in the world jealous of that.
You know living his own lifebeing a maintenance man, uh, who
probably lives there for free.
Well, he doesn't live there, Iguess taking care of his bonsai
trees yeah, so anyways, they gothere moves.
He makes friends with mr miyagi.
He gets bullied at this newschool who starts school like
the same day they move there.
(35:55):
I was like that's kind of crazystarts school, gets picked on,
for I don't know what you pickedon, just for being the new kid,
basically new kid and hittingon uh ali ali, who you know, the
actress who played ali uh,elizabeth shu.
She was was at Harvard duringthis movie.
She had to put her studies onhold to do this movie.
So she's a smart cookie.
Anyways, makes friends with Alisuper fast.
(36:19):
Then William's character.
What's his name?
Johnny Lawrence, johnnyLawrence, thank you.
Johnny gets wind of this.
He's like nah, you ain't gonnatake my girl.
And it just so happens to bethat he's also an expert in
karate.
Of course, his Cobra, kai dojo,is taught by this guy like this
(36:44):
really ruthless teacher.
Sensei who's like no, there'sno mercy.
You're stronger and everyoneelse is beneath you I was like,
first of all, in real life.
If you're doing karate, youprobably get picked out in
school for doing karate.
So I mean you're, if anything, you're fighting off other
bullies.
Um, cobra kai, you know, at theend of the movie he kind of has
(37:06):
a self-realization will.
Uh, johnny, at the end I waslike oh, maybe I am a dick.
It's kind of wild and I'm surethey address this in cobra kai
show like why would you continuethat dojo and not?
yeah you know, keep thatattached unless, like his whole
goal is like to reinvent cobrakai, I guess well, I think what
they?
Speaker 2 (37:23):
they retcon that a
little bit in cobra kai um,
because it what they show in theoriginal movie is like or
excuse me, johnny walks up withthe trophy and he's like hey,
daniel, you're not that bad of aguy, and then the movie ends
Right away these movies just end.
Yeah, but this is supposed tobe what they retcon is Daniel
(37:44):
being an unreliable narrator.
And it opens with William Zabkabeing on the mat, still as a
student, just like furious thathe lost the tournament.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
so they do they do
shit.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
They do like uh
switch some things around there.
But yeah, the the ending ofthese movies is also something
they were like.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
They even like poke
fun at that in Family Guy.
I don't know if you've everseen that episode.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Oh no.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
They win and Johnny
goes.
You know what?
You're not that bad of a kid,johnny.
And Johnny goes fuck you, youjust tried to kill me Right.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Several times in this
movie too, they tried to kill
him.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
I was going to bring
that up.
One of the jump him and likehis bikes.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Yeah, is there a goal
to kill this kid?
That's exactly so.
When I did this movie for kungfu pizza party, my wife watched
it with me and reviewed itbecause she had never seen it,
and she we got to that scenewhen they run them off the road
and same thing she's like arethey trying to like manslaughter
here?
What are we doing?
Speaker 1 (38:45):
here.
It's insane dude.
And then this girl was like ohdon't mind them, they're just
teasing.
I was like shut up no, they'renot yeah, I mean there's a whole
good montage scene with him andhis girl um ally, like the
whole date sequence that waspretty sure, you know and they
had like the rivalry, where likeum, where uh geez louise dan
daniel sees him and um johnny, like in the dance floor like it
(39:08):
looks like they're kissing youknow it sets up for rivalry very
well.
A little bit, I wish they wouldalmost, but you said this is
from daniel's narrative yeah, okay, so I almost like I wish
they like gave johnny like alittle softer background, like
oh, he's a dick because hisparents are drunks, or something
(39:29):
like that you, you know, okay, sure.
But, like you said, this is theend of the narrative.
We don't know that.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Yeah, it's true, I
think this one of all of the
movies does do the best job ofestablishing Cobra, establishing
the antagonist, as likecredible threats yeah, like
Cobra Kai.
Johnny threats yeah, like CobraKai.
(39:54):
Johnny Lawrence, john Kreeseall of them just feel so present
and so like dangerousthroughout this move, throughout
this movie.
In other ones it's like, especially like Karate Kid part
three.
Terry Silver is such a he's abad guy but he is such a
mustache twirling cartoonvillain that it kills it.
The jackie chan 2010 karate kid.
Speaker 1 (40:13):
Like the bad guys are
almost not even in the movie,
like they're barely a part ofthe story yeah, I agree with
that because, like the 2010 one, that was mostly about like him,
just not fitting into chinayeah, that movie was about
making jayden smith a star.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
That was the goal of
that movie.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
That is very true
because that was also very
random, like why he moved tochina in the first place yes,
like I got a good job herethat's quite the move, yeah yeah
, it's the same exact thing inthe next next movie we're
talking about, but reversed.
Anyways, let's go back to thismovie.
Like you know, the trainingscenes were iconic and this
movie.
It still gets referenced to thisday too.
(40:49):
You know, wax on wax off paint, the brush up and down, side to
side, dude, I guarantee you Iwish there were stats.
I'm sure there are stats outthere, like how much karate
moved up after this movie wasreleased oh, yeah, advance.
And how many techniques werepracticed in there too, like
people in their backyard justpainting and shit.
Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Have you ever tried old schooltechniques like that?
Speaker 2 (41:11):
uh, I mean, wax on,
wax off is probably the most
like oh yeah, that's a, that's ablock that everybody learns.
Yeah, that's probably the mosteasily transferable one of all
of them.
But yeah you, you are correct.
The the karate took off in the80s.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Part of it was the
movie, part of it was Chuck
Norris, part of it was theSpeaking of which I think the
referee at the end was a studentof Chuck Norris in real life.
I think so, yeah, yeah, I readthat.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
Even the tournament
karate scene for adults was very
popular in the 80s, for likeadults was very popular in the
80s, so it like there wereschools that were marketing
themselves as karate that werenot teaching karate it was like
kung fu or something yeah, well, that's what it is with cobra
kai.
Cobra kai is actually teaching akorean martial art, tong sudo.
(42:04):
But there were there wereschools in real life as well
that their dojos were teachingKorean karate or Chinese karate,
things like that I remember meand my brother did karate when
we were in elementary school.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
Did not care for it
All.
I remember doing was justthrowing punches, Like you know,
standing in line and throwingpunches.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
That's all we ever
learned, I think.
I think I moved up to theyellow belt, and that was about
it.
You just learned how to punch.
Well, good for you, yeah.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
Yeah, belt, and
that's about it.
You just learned how to punch.
Well, good for you.
Yeah, yeah it was like it's onething to do karate against all
the people doing karate.
Do you think karate works inreal life?
Speaker 2 (42:36):
fights like that,
like so karate is such a so
karate is more of an umbrellaterm for several different
martial arts that come fromjapan.
There is one style calledKyokushin that does translate
very well.
It's very aggressive,especially if you're thinking
like maybe not necessarilyself-defense, but if you're
(42:58):
thinking like MMA, like UFC kindof stuff.
That one does translate reallywell to that kind of environment
.
Traditional martial arts likekarate, kung fu, taekwondo.
They look really cool but youdo have to like change some
things in order to make it workin the modern era, because
(43:20):
they're trying to honor the pastwhere combat was very different
.
You were fighting people ridinghorses and wearing armor, not
yeah unless you're like incanada, fighting mounties,
you're not going to imagine theyget like control those moves up
there.
It'll be over with oh, it'sover, it'll be over.
We can't handle that.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
It's a random, like
going off topic.
I would just watch the wildrobot for the first time ever.
Okay, fucking amazing I'veheard it's like it took me so
long to watch it and I'm mad Ididn't watch the theaters.
It's on peacock right now or onnetflix netflix yeah yeah, you
gotta watch it tonight andanother going.
You mentioned mma.
Um, the rocks coming out withan mma movie.
Yeah, the smashing machine, dude, that looks so good, I'm
(44:00):
not even a big rock fan anymore,I didn't even recognize him at
first.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
Right, yeah, right.
I think that's why I like ithe's coming out with another a24
movie too, because this one'sdoing so well already a24 is
really starting to gravitatetowards this combat stuff,
because they did the iron claw, they did queen of the ring, they
got the smashing machine, sothey're sweeney's coming to
boxing movie soon too oh, reallyokay if it hasn't came out.
Speaker 1 (44:25):
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
they are doing something like
that which I love biopics I loveoh same so I'm not gonna
complain about that I mean we'reboth of the same age where
they're.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
In the early 2000s,
disney was pumping out a ton of
sports based on a true storyfilm like the gridiron um
miracle, uh, full corp or no,glory, glory road.
That was the one, that wasbasketball.
Yeah, yeah, the keanu.
Speaker 1 (44:50):
Reason one with a
baseball one oh yeah yeah, you
know, yeah, there's a million.
Yeah, now we're getting likemore grittier, like boxing mma,
yeah, stuff like that which wealways had, boxing, I think,
though, but yeah, yeah,interesting, interesting.
Going back to karatekin, youknow the training scene was
iconic, it was great.
I like the beach scene.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
You know where,
daniel, kind of learns that swan
technique crane kick on his own.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
I thought I wish I
would see mr miyagi's reaction a
little bit bigger.
He's like when did he learn?
Speaker 2 (45:16):
When did he do that?
Speaker 1 (45:19):
But that was good.
And then how he used it at theend.
Like man, this guy was gettingthe shit kicked out of him Like
dirty fighting.
Daniel still got up, which isthe same thing in Karate Kid
2010.
I hate comparing it to that one, because the Karate Kid did it
first and they were copying them.
But you know, you know thatfight scene was great, even like
the kid who hurt him.
I can't remember his name andthat's Cardamon.
Speaker 2 (45:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (45:42):
He didn't want to
hurt him.
He apologized so much yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
You know I like that.
There's like one kid in CobraKai during the Johnny Lawrence
fight who's like, yeah, put himin a body bag.
That guy was hella annoying, hell, annoying but uh like I do
like it how it's kind of teasedhere and they do a little bit
more in the next movie of likethose guys realizing, oh, our
(46:06):
instructor is a horrible personyeah, like what the fuck is that
guy going through that?
Speaker 1 (46:11):
he hates everybody,
right.
So I mean, you know it's, it'sthis movie.
If it was filmed today for thefirst time ever, there's no
other it would have been filmedway more dramatic, like close up
to the face and like stuff likethat, like really emphasizes
the kick to the art, likefucking ribs, like that would
make it seem like it hurt moreversus like it was like a wide
screenshot the entire time, which, for the time, that's all
(46:34):
we had really they didn't reallyhave other techniques besides,
like that, stuff, like that.
So I mean, I think with a newfilm, now they have those
advances that they can do, shootit a lot differently, like so
many different options.
But you don't get movies likethat anymore in the eighties,
like that, like the Rocky movies.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Yeah, it's timeless.
Speaker 1 (46:52):
I like it still I
wish they can still see
something like that yeah.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
And you see it a lot
in the kung fu movies as well
just kind of that wide screenshot again.
For like 90s kids it's likewhen you're playing mortal
kombat or street fighter.
Just like there they are andnow they're gonna go.
And I actually prefer it thatway because you can actually
yeah, see the combat and it'salmost like realistic too.
Speaker 1 (47:14):
That's how we'll be
watching in real life yeah, yeah
, yeah versus.
I don't know what his facialexpressions are like like if he
zoomed in super close, you know.
I mean nowadays movies are justfilmed like almost algorithm,
algorithm, mythic okay word, youknow like over the shoulder
look, and that cuts it up yeah, you know it's, it's the best.
Speaker 2 (47:33):
It's really just to
hide the stuntman.
Yeah it, it probably looksgreat, but they care more about
hiding the stuntmen yeah, whichcan be done.
Speaker 1 (47:43):
Great, there was a
cut.
There was a scene where mrmiyagi he was up on like doing
the crane thing, like thattotally wasn't, mr miyagi.
Yeah, uh, at the end, like youknow, he wins is a good scene
but, like you said, it cuts.
This movie's like a little overtwo hours long, which it needed
to be done and over with.
Yes, but I, but I was like it'sjust, that's it, that's it Wink
the end, yeah.
(48:03):
I don't know if he stopped beingbullied afterwards.
I don't know this, and that youdon't really find out anything
until the next movie.
How about Mr Miyagi giving himthe car at such a young age too?
That was cool, I thinksomething like that.
And you pick, pick whichevercar you want yeah, that's insane
.
That's just just take one niceass cars.
Yeah, you know, I did cry.
(48:24):
I cried, but I too like gotemotional when he was talking
about his dead wife and kidthat's a hard scene yeah yeah,
especially.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
You know, up until
that point this movie is
basically your standard 80s teencoming ofof-age film, which
there are a lot of in the 80sand most of them are iconic, you
know.
But that scene adds so muchemotional weight to this movie
that other movies, even like 16Candles and Back to the Future
(48:53):
and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, donot have.
Speaker 1 (48:57):
Right, I'm glad you
said Ferris Buellerris,
bueller's.
That's exactly what I wasthinking of okay yeah uh, but
what'd you give the originalkarate kid?
Speaker 2 (49:05):
one out of ten the
original one out of ten.
I think this is the best one.
So how about we just out of thefranchise?
I think, this is the best one,so I'm just gonna make it simple
and give it a 10 within withinthe franchise as a movie itself,
probably closer to like a seven, but I'll give it eight.
Okay, I'll give it a 10 within,within the franchise as a movie
itself probably closer to likea seven.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
But I'll give it
eight.
Okay, I'll give it eight.
Yeah, you know, there's notthat much more I would improve
on.
But like other than liketechnical advances, like sure
like different kind of shots andstuff like that a little bit
more of a unending yeah, butlike the chemistry between
everybody is phenomenal.
Oh yeah, like the, thesoundtrack was pretty dope.
The fighting, I mean they gaveus stakes and you know like, not
(49:43):
stakes like where I'm going tothreaten you, kind of thing,
Like no, they were literallybeating the shit out of this kid
.
Oh yeah, you know.
So like if he didn't win, theywere going to be on his ass,
yeah, so I mean, yeah, it'spretty interesting.
8 out of 10 for me.
Okay, now we're going to fastforward.
What is it Like 40 years?
Oh yeah 40 years ago, 41 years41 years to the newest one,
(50:05):
karate Kid Legends.
Now it was heavily marketedthat this was not going to be a
continuation.
It was going to be like areboot, almost Dude it continues
Like not only the originalKarate Kid, the Jackie Chan one
too.
He's playing the same characteras he did in 2010.
They just don't reference likeJane Smith's character at all or
anything like that, because whywould they?
(50:26):
Didn't he move at the end?
Or something like that.
I don't know what he didSomething.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
Something.
Speaker 1 (50:31):
But he ended up
opening up his own school, which
is how the movie opens, beforewe get deep into the movie.
This movie is about after kungfu prodigy lee fong relocates in
new york city.
He attracts an unwantedattention from local karate
champion and embarks on ajourney to enter ultimate karate
competition to help, with thehelp of mr han and daniel
larusso.
Dude, with that descriptionalone it skips like one of the
(50:54):
biggest plot points of the wholemovie, which is the pizza shop
yeah, you know, yes, it does, which which also was, like,
really the main focus of thismovie for the first 45 is not
that long of a movie yeah, thisone's an hour 34, perfect first
50 movies.
Yeah, 50 movies is about thepizza shop.
Yeah, the last 45 minutes, likeyou don't really doesn't matter
(51:15):
about that moving.
Dude, they announced this moviein 2023, in November, that
they're open casting to anybody.
You just had to know differentlanguages and be Asian.
Basically, I thought theyfilmed this movie super fast,
the fact that it came out rightand they just announced that
they're doing casting calls atthe end of 2023.
Great, which you know.
(51:37):
They probably had everythinglined up already.
Speaker 2 (51:38):
They just needed an
actor.
Yeah, A big thing.
This movie got delayed a coupletimes.
It is because they wanted it tocome out after cobra kai
wrapped.
Yeah, and cobra kai had liketwo finales.
Basically it, the bulk of thefinal season was released, but
the last episode netflixreleased like a month later in
(51:59):
an actual like cinematic kind ofway.
Speaker 1 (52:01):
That netflix normally
doesn't do with their shows and
it's because, I think, eventhough it takes place a couple
of months after the Cobra Kaifinale, I think in their world
it's like three years after themovie.
I think so.
Speaker 2 (52:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (52:14):
Yeah, how do you feel
about the kid Lee Fong who
plays by Ben Wong?
Speaker 2 (52:19):
I think he did really
well.
I thought by ben wong.
I think he did really well.
I thought he was cool.
Speaker 1 (52:21):
I think he did really
well, let me see his acting
credits, if he has any.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (52:25):
I don't know what his
acting credits are, but I think
he did very well from forhimself.
Um, him and the girl mia Idon't know the actress's name.
I thought they had a lot ofgood chemistry.
Um, he held his own really well.
Uh, with all the fighting stuff, there's even the one fight
scene.
That's like in the alley whenhe saves the, the dad.
(52:47):
That's my favorite scene of thewhole movie.
That's the fighting scene.
That's my favorite fightingscene and they are they're
trying to in that scene make himlook like jackie chan.
It is funny.
Yeah, he gets hurt.
It's all the stuff you get froma tradition like an old school,
90s jackie chan fight sequence,if you think about it, jackie
(53:07):
chan movies.
Speaker 1 (53:08):
All of his fighting
has always been self-defense
fighting, never aggressive oranything like that, which
exactly what you said.
He's kind of mimicking that hewas.
I guess he was one through thefirst punch, but he was also
defending somebody too.
Yes, yeah, um, speaking ofacting credits, okay, um, he
only has two.
Okay, one, he was a mean girlsthat came out last year oh
really, I don't remember that atall uh, and he's gonna be
(53:29):
coming out in the new hungergames next year oh, okay, is it
for the uh sunrise on thereaping?
Speaker 2 (53:35):
yes, is that it okay?
Speaker 1 (53:36):
yes, he's a good.
I would like to see him more.
He could definitely be the newBruce Lee if he wanted to.
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (53:41):
Jackie Chan.
Speaker 1 (53:45):
I don't see how they
won't do more Karate Kid movies
with him.
Dude, that's what I'm talkingabout.
They're going to milk thisthing.
Granted, this plot was very, very exactly the same as the
original Karate Kid, just withthe pizza thing added to it.
You know, original karate kid, just with the pizza thing added
to it.
Um, you know, kid moves to newtown.
He likes a girl, ends up beingthat girl like this dick who
(54:06):
knows karate?
Speaker 2 (54:06):
and uh, why do so
many dicks know karate?
Yeah, yeah so yeah.
Speaker 1 (54:11):
So then he gets
challenged to this do this
tournament in order, like tolike, get him off their backs,
and also he wants the girl back.
It's the exact same.
They do try mixing it up alittle bit by adding this pizza
shop, and we'll get into whatthat means.
But, the best description I sawabout this movie.
The review I saw about thismovie is that this movie is very
, very safe.
They didn't take any risk oranything like that.
If you slapped a Nickelodeonsticker on this movie, I would
(54:33):
have bought it.
Speaker 2 (54:34):
Yeah, you know they
do change some of the having
rewatched all of these prettyrecently.
They do keep with some of thetropes.
There are some tropes that theydo change.
It's one of those like I knowhow this is supposed to be, but
you changed it.
They nerfed it.
Speaker 1 (54:53):
Yeah, yeah, they
nerfed it.
Like we just said, he got theshit bit out of him in the first
one.
This one he gets like when hedoes like that flying kick, he
gets one kick to the I don'teven know the face or the
stomach.
He's down.
He's like that's the wholefight.
I was like no, like I don'tknow, they nerfed it.
They nerf a lot of thingsanymore.
But um, let's go from thebeginning.
(55:13):
You know, mr han opens up hisown karate school, which he ends
up like his grandson is astudent who's one of the best
there.
If I'm not mistaken, his momgets a new job.
I don't know what they say shedoes hospital.
Speaker 2 (55:27):
Yeah, she's a nurse,
they always call her nurse like
teasing.
Speaker 1 (55:30):
But yeah, she does,
she's a big doctor.
She moves to new york.
The only thing I didn't likeabout this they moved to new
york and instantly there's likeno cultural shock for this kid.
He he's like he goes, like okay, I'm gonna go next door, they
move in.
They just move in, I'm gonnaget a pizza next door.
I was like I don't thinksomeone who moved just from
(55:50):
china would do that, like rightaway.
Speaker 2 (55:52):
He.
That is one of the things thatthey change of usually.
You know, with ralph macchioand with, um uh, jaden smith,
there is this moment of I hateit here, I want to go back home.
Never once, like initially.
When she tells him we're movingto new york, she's like.
He's like seriously, that'swhat we're doing.
Yeah, never comes back up well, maybe because, like, he meets
(56:14):
his girl within the first fivehours of being there lucky him
yeah, you know like he alsospeaks perfect english for
moving straight from china Ilove how any little they go out
of their way in this movie, thatany little thing that you can
go.
I think that's a plot holethey're like here's a quick line
that explains it all it was.
Speaker 1 (56:32):
They said that he
learned english because he's he
studied in hong kong, where theyhad an american school, yep,
which I was still feel like youwould still have an accent or
something like that.
You know he spoke perfectenglish, uh, which makes me
think, I don't know, is hischinese not that good?
Your nander not that good maybeso that, um you know, he meets
this pizza and I hated thegirl's dad.
(56:53):
I hated the initial introductionis awful, this guy it's like
someone who, literally, whomoved from china, who never met
someone who's from america, likethey just look at movies, like
this is a typical new yorkeryeah, with his accent.
And like, hey, you want deepdiscusion, go to go to jersey.
Yeah, I hated that.
(57:14):
I.
Then you know his old backstory, the boxing, which I thought
that was interesting.
You know, like that, likeadding boxing to this world, you
know, we never seen anythinglike that.
Speaker 2 (57:22):
I loved that part um.
Speaker 1 (57:23):
You know this guy.
He gets in trouble some loansharks for his pizza shop um
loan sharks who also own thatrival karate dojo, by the way
what are the?
Speaker 2 (57:32):
chances.
What are the chances of that?
Speaker 1 (57:35):
yeah, so he ended up
uh, he owns all his money to
them and they come like I don'tthink I'm collecting or what
their plan is to come beat theshit out of them so he can't
work and get the money back likewhat's your goal here?
you know, yeah right so they, they go beat the shit out a
couple times.
And then he also finds out like, oh, there's this boxing match.
I haven't boxed in years.
But like, if you help me train,I can win back this money and
(57:57):
pay off everybody.
I paid for college, he said Ipaid a little bit for my pocket,
you know.
So, long story short, he doeshelp him train.
You know I'm skipping over alot of plot details, but we're
crushed for time.
But you know he helps him trainand it's interesting, you know,
like at the same time, like Iwould thought, like is is this,
is this the movie?
Like is, are we going to?
(58:17):
Is the?
Is the dad the karate?
Speaker 2 (58:19):
kid in this movie.
You know Uh-huh.
Speaker 1 (58:20):
Um, he has a boxing
which and we also learned a sad,
dark story about the karate kid, uh, lee's brother.
Yeah, that was the darkestthing about the whole movie and
I loved it.
But, like even you know, thisis spoiler alert.
But his brother was big in akarate too.
He's not car.
No, I see you saying karateit's kung fu.
(58:42):
They're in the kung fu andthat's one of the plot details.
He has to learn karate, kung fuand um.
His brother does a tournament.
He ends up winning, but theloser, that one, gets pissed and
he meets him outside, stabs him.
He dies yeah that's what thisis like, nickelodeon part, like
you, just his eyes are closing.
He's dying you just got stabbedlike you're not breathing for
(59:03):
your like fighting for your lastbreath or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (59:06):
Like, give me
something more dramatic here's
my thing, though it is verynickelodeon.
This is almost a family movie, but oh, this is the first movie
of the whole franchise ratedpg-13.
Rated pg-13 I think this moviedoes do a good job of trying to
appeal to the younger audiencejust like all the others, all
(59:28):
the other one, all the otherkarate kid films are set within
their decade pretty firmly yeahyou know, like the, the ralph
macchio, those are very 80smovies.
The one in the 90s, hilary Swank, her outfit is so 90s it's
popular again.
That's what her wardrobe is inthat one and even like Jaden
(59:51):
Smith's movie.
It might be hard because of thecultural difference being in
China, but the soundtrack isvery 20 times.
Speaker 1 (59:59):
But I mean, they had
the Dance, dance Revolution and
that one it was very popular atthat time.
This one.
Nothing specific other than thefact that Kung Fu or something
like that, I don't know Karatemight be coming back after this
movie.
Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
Who knows?
Speaker 1 (01:00:11):
Yeah, you might get
more busy after this, right?
So he ends up having a dad.
The dad ends up like same thing, kind of like kill this guy in
the ring, the other guy tells tokill his dad, takes a mile.
He does end up getting out ofthe hospital because he gets
hurt really bad, and there'slike this kid has like PTSD Lee.
That's one of the things he hasto fight through the whole time
(01:00:33):
.
And then Jackie Chan comes intotown.
He's like out of this movie forlike a good half this movie.
He comes into town, like to NewYork, and there's a scene where
he sneaks into the apartmentlike why, like, was that part of
your training?
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
Like back in there.
Speaker 1 (01:00:45):
It was like to always
be prepared, like what.
So, anyways, he ends up talkingto him.
They go visit the dad in thehospital.
He's like you know what we'regoing to help you, I'm going to
sign him up for this tournamentand go up to the toughest guys
in New York fighting, riskinghis life and not mine, to win
this money for you.
Someone he met like four monthsago.
(01:01:05):
Not even I was like that's.
I don't know how realistic thatis, but whatever I was like,
this is like a totally differentcharacter from the also the
Jackie Chan, like a.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
Jaden Smith movie it
is.
That is another big thing thathas changed.
He's the Jaden Smith Jackie, the Mr Han in that one is More
like Miyagi Very serious.
It is not the typical JackieChan character.
This one is the more typicalkind of jovial, kind of joking
around, fooling around a bitJackie Chan.
Speaker 1 (01:01:37):
It's almost like his,
not the pacifier.
What's his other movie?
Miss the nanny or somethinglike that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
the babysitter the
spy next door.
Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
Yeah, yeah, that's
kind of like that, jackie chan,
yeah, yeah, yeah um, which youknow, at his old age he's more
about having fun.
I feel like.
So I think he did.
They did want offer him to gotraining for this movie, but
he's like I've been training forthe 64 years of my life.
Speaker 2 (01:01:57):
I'm good, I'm good
like I don't need training.
Also, in context of 2010,jackie chan was moving more
towards serious films there fora little bit yeah, one of his
movies.
Mr or um little big soldier islike a very serious, very uh old
school like 80s jackie chanfilm where he is very serious,
(01:02:20):
not joking around whole moviesin mandarin, the whole thing
this is also when will smith hadmore weight to his name too,
and he probably had his thumb onjackie chan's people, you know
a little bit so that, um,anyways, going back to the movie
, he's like, yeah, we'll trainfor this tournament and this is
where he goes recruit recruitsdaniel, which in the trailers he
was heavily marketed in themovie.
(01:02:42):
He was literally in there forlike 40 minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:02:44):
The last 40 minutes
of that he drives to California
or flies to California.
Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
He lives in Mr
Miyagi's house.
I love that detail.
That is cool.
I love that too.
That was sick.
Speaker 1 (01:02:52):
I was excited when I
I was seeing him with though
it's like that's his house andeverything yeah, the cars and
everything still too you got allthe cars in the end.
Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, so then,uh, I'm sure they touched on.
I don't know, they didn't showlike he was living there or
something yeah but I was excitedto see that.
So he ends up finding new yorkto help him out, which is cool,
(01:03:14):
like okay.
But the difference is like wegot to teach him a wholly,
totally different fighting stylewithin a week, like kung fu to
karate, which you know, he saidlike no, they didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
They didn't have to
do that, by the way.
Speaker 1 (01:03:26):
Dude, they made that.
They tried to make that a plotpoint.
That's a plot point.
Give me a longer span.
Make that a good half of themovie.
Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
So like I said, this
is where the movie falls off the
rails a little bit.
For me, this is where thewheels come off.
I really like the pizza shopstuff, the boxing, all of it.
I think it's a really goodaddition.
But they spend so much timewith that part that then, when
you get to the part where JackieChan and Ralph Macchio are both
(01:03:56):
in it and we're getting to thetournament, and Ralph Macchio
are both in it and we're gettingto the tournament, the entire
final third of this film is justset pieces.
It's almost like one bigmontage as opposed to actual
scenes.
You know what I mean, and so Idid get halfway through this
(01:04:17):
movie before I was like RalphMacchio's gonna barely be in
this, isn't he?
Now, when he does show up, wedo get a lot of him.
Speaker 1 (01:04:24):
It was cool.
I liked him in this movie.
Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
Yes, we get a lot of
him, a lot of him and Jackie
Chan interacting.
That was cool, which thank youfor that.
I'm glad they did not skimp outon that part.
Speaker 1 (01:04:35):
Like the scene where
they're like comparison styles
and they're being the shit outof the league.
Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
That was funny.
You know this is assault inBrooklyn, right?
Speaker 1 (01:04:42):
yeah, that was fun to
see, like those different
styles.
And you know, man, I would haveloved to be in a fly on the
wall, just been them filming it,because I'm sure they were
geeking out.
I imagine yeah, dude Ralph is.
So he's such the man dude, evenlike so many years later.
Yeah, so then, uh, you know, there was one other thing I
wanted to be.
Oh, that fighting scene likewhere they're training to do the
counter-attack for the flyingkick uh-huh they go to a subway
(01:05:04):
and you have to dunk underneaththis bar, like that bar, like
you, you pass through to go intothe subway.
I was like they could have justput a bar at the house like
yeah, like there could have beenanother way to do this they did
just try to incorporate the newyork thing, which they did
heavily at the end of thetournament.
Speaker 2 (01:05:20):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (01:05:20):
Okay, I think we're
there by now.
We can talk about that.
The New York.
There is a whole like lovestory like that we didn't even
touch on oh yes.
That was kind of like just verythe same as the first one, so
like we didn't have to careabout that.
Speaker 2 (01:05:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:05:30):
Yeah, um the
tournament.
It was like it's so different, like the flyer has a QR code you
know right after watching it.
It was funny.
Um, the tournament, it was thisbig thing that all these people
from New York or something likethat dude it's in a basketball
court, random, not even in apark and in the city, it's just
(01:05:52):
like between houses.
Speaker 2 (01:05:53):
So here's my thing.
I've never done a tournament ina big city, yeah, okay, so I
don't know what they do in bigcities.
That's not how you do atournament.
Oh, I can almost guaranteeyou're not having the final
match on a top of a skyscraperwhere it's windy as hell.
Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
Like you're not gonna
be doing that, it almost felt
illegal, like what they were itwas like a street fight yeah,
and there's maybe like 30 peoplein the first one.
Yeah, the first fight, 30people just grab like a crowd
like and they're all cheeringand stuff like that.
I was like you probably don'teven know these kids.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
Also, what was with
the names of some of these?
I didn't random there was oneguy his name was like buddha
smith.
Another guy was like like zentoro or something.
It's like all of a sudden therewas like mortal kombat
characters in this movie that'sjust a new yorker talking about
this point, other names.
Speaker 1 (01:06:46):
It's just new yorker,
like kind of like spider-man,
like the amazing human spider, you know, yeah, yeah, uh, you do
like every like.
They're like different days forthe different tournaments and
they're all different new Yorklocations, like a basketball
court, like Central Park orsomething like that.
It's almost, like I said,illegal.
You just show up random spotsand they're there cheering on a
(01:07:06):
monster like that, and at thefinale they said it was a
skyscraper which looked coolcinematically.
Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
Oh, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:07:12):
I don't even think
they're on a real skyscraper.
Speaker 2 (01:07:13):
I'm sure it was green
screen I was assume so again
it's going to be so windy upthere, crazy, and there's
helicopters flying around too.
Yeah, you can hear that also.
How do they have fifty thousanddollars for a grand prize?
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
yeah, well, yeah,
probably because they saved it
from the location like aren'tlike, even the first one is held
in a gymnasium, at least.
Speaker 2 (01:07:33):
Yeah, yeah also what
you see in the first one of the
like you score a point, okay, back to your spot fight.
Yeah, that's how tournamentsparring works yeah what they do
here of like you just keepgoing and you score your points
as you go.
That's not how that works.
Also, I have never been in onewhere the you're trying to score
(01:07:56):
eight points it's usually arandom number, yeah it's usually
five.
Yeah, even like in jaydensmith's movie, it's like two
points.
But I don't know.
I don't know how they work inchina so maybe.
Maybe that's like a like abeijing kung fu thing, but like
yeah there was but at the sametime it's like this is the part
(01:08:17):
in every karate kid movie yeahwhere you just kind of have to
accept it for what it is.
Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
It just gets really
cinematic at the end yeah, I
think the fighting in thisfinale fight was a little bit
better than the original onebecause they kept going at it,
like you said, like yeah, yeah,I mean that's why they did it
yeah, yeah but yeah, and I likedhow they switched it off from
the crane kick like how they didin jaden.
They did that in jaden right, they did this little flying kick
(01:08:43):
, which is very cool, and theyentitled the origin from it.
Instead of learning it from mrhan, he learned it from his
brother.
I thought that was very coolthat was different.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Yeah, it was
different.
Speaker 1 (01:08:50):
That was a good
change and that was a good like
kick and how you learn how tocounter it.
You know that was very cool.
Speaker 2 (01:08:54):
It's very good, I did
like how.
As you're saying that, I didlike how.
The technique.
That one wasn't the big flashymove like it is in all the
movies, it was this simplecounter.
Yeah, it wasn't some big likeover the top parkour kick like
he's doing tricking kick likehe's doing here.
Speaker 1 (01:09:15):
It was this very
little boop that he does
afterwards and then like at theend he well, the kid does get
mad and like try to like attackhim and he like counters him and
he's almost like about to puncha shot of him.
It's like keeps his cool.
Like I don't think he neededthat part.
Speaker 2 (01:09:29):
Like I don't there
was a really good easter egg.
They could have done therewhat's that?
so in the second one and in thenext Karate Kid, mr Miyagi both
times, and Daniel in the secondKarate Kid, they have their
opponent down like that and theypull back and it looks like
(01:09:50):
they're gonna like take him outand then he squeezes their nose
like boop kind of thing.
It was right there.
They could have done that.
It was right because there'snot too many easter eggs in this
movie.
Uh, daniel does say sweep theleg at one point very quickly.
Speaker 1 (01:10:07):
I thought they were
gonna say that line in this one
too.
They never did they.
Speaker 2 (01:10:10):
He does say it
quickly at one point.
I think it's when they're doingthe subway scene and he does
like his joke.
Yeah, yeah like as a joke, butI was like you actually have him
on the ground standing over him.
You missed it could have beenright there.
Speaker 1 (01:10:26):
I also would have
liked, at one point the movie
opens up with like uh, somethingseen original yeah scenes.
I would like to like if um leelike went back in the like his
room and watched his karatetournaments on YouTube, or
something like that.
Speaker 2 (01:10:39):
Oh that would have
been cool, that would have been
sick.
Yeah, that would have been cool, I wonder.
So that opening scene.
They show a clip from KarateKid Part 2, and then it turns
into this animated sequence.
Everything that Mr Miyagi saysduring that part is not part of
the original movie.
I kind of figured that.
So I'm curious, curious, who'ssaying those lines?
(01:11:00):
I didn't look it up if that'slike someone who just sounds
like pat morita or like an aigenerated voice thing, because
we can do that now I hope likehis family got some money from
his scenes in this one which isso cool scene.
Speaker 1 (01:11:15):
I'm like 30 years
late yeah it's been over 10
years since he passed away too,you know yeah, yeah it's all
fucking cool.
Um, this is one other thing too, I forgot.
Oh, the end credits, cameoscene, not end credit and cameo
scene oh, with uh will, yeah, yeah I got excited when I saw
like fuck yeah, dude these kidslove this franchise.
I love the franchise with themI want to go through watch all
(01:11:36):
this shit right now, but uh,what would you give this one out
of ten?
Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
I would say, I think
this movie we didn't really
touch on this I think this movieis really funny.
It's fun.
Speaker 1 (01:11:48):
It's family friendly
like I said it's safe though it
is very safe, but go ahead sevenand a half close to eight I
give it six and a half somewherein there.
Speaker 2 (01:11:56):
maybe I enjoyed give
it a six and a half Somewhere in
there.
Maybe I enjoyed myself in theend.
Speaker 1 (01:12:00):
How was your theater?
You said you went Friday.
I went Friday.
There was less than 10 peoplethere, yeah, same here too.
I'm more curious we're filmingthis on a Sunday.
I'm curious to see how it didopening weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:12:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:12:11):
There is a cool
popcorn bucket for a couple of
them.
Speaker 2 (01:12:13):
I saw the one.
It was the Five Boroughs, whichwas the name of the tournament.
I almost bought the cup becauseit looks like his uniform that
he's wearing.
Speaker 1 (01:12:22):
That was cool.
He also wore Daniel's uniform.
Speaker 2 (01:12:24):
Yes, the headband,
the headband, yeah, the headband
.
Speaker 1 (01:12:27):
That was pretty cool,
mr Miyagi's.
I mean this whole thing.
There's a lot of nostalgiamixed in there too.
Speaker 2 (01:12:42):
You know what?
I'll move right up from 6.5 to7.
You're gonna go so becausethere's a lot of nostalgia in
this movie too.
Now you keep saying they'remilking this for all it's worth.
Yeah, so if you're curious howthey can go forward, the one
from the 90s with hillary swankthey have done very little to
connect that one back intoeverything.
She's like not in cobra kai, they only make like a quick
reference to her, so it could.
I like the idea of her showingback up as like she's teaching
(01:13:05):
her own version of miyagi do,and maybe that's the clash of
like there's now two differentstyles of miyagi karate out
there, or something along thoselines.
But that there's where you canmilk.
Continue to milk the franchise.
Is her coming back?
I don't know if she would, though not only her.
(01:13:26):
I don't think ralph would comeback yeah, I think he would do
another one, you would, I thinkthis one was so special like
sure he turned down other ones, like he's very picky on which
one and you don't really.
Speaker 1 (01:13:36):
There's a random fact
like uh, william uh credits how
he met your mother for bringingthe six.
Like cobra kai like, because, like he brought him on the, they
brought him on a cameo forplaying his character.
Um, he plays himself he playshimself, yeah and then you know
that got popularity sparking upagain and that's what you know
inspired him to do because haveyou seen that episode?
Speaker 2 (01:13:57):
do you know?
Speaker 1 (01:13:57):
yeah, yeah he's like
you know what?
You're the only one who gets hegets, he's the good guy, he is
the karate kid he already knowskarate, so he's the karate right
, you know, and it was anillegal jump kick makes sense,
that is that is a whole thing, though the whole the crane kick
was an illegal kick thing.
Speaker 2 (01:14:13):
That is a
long-standing like debate among
fans and you google it.
There's all kinds of redditthreads and the whole bit about
it.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
Yeah, do you know if
he's been anything william
besides his friend?
Speaker 2 (01:14:26):
outside of this.
I imagine he has, I don'treally know.
Speaker 1 (01:14:29):
I mean they really
don't need to like.
I feel like at this point.
Speaker 2 (01:14:32):
No, he used to make
cameos and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (01:14:34):
You know, yeah I'm
sure they weren't cameo too at
one point, like the app oh, theactual yeah cameo, yeah, yeah I
would man, that'd be sick.
Um, brandon, it's been awesomehaving you on this podcast.
I was talking about movies withyou too yeah you mentioned you
were.
This is the first movie you'veseen all year long.
Yeah, wasn't worth the wait itwas good.
Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
You know, honestly,
there wasn't too much during
this first half of the year thatI was like oh man, I can't
believe.
Speaker 1 (01:15:00):
I missed that one.
No, they're crazy.
They were good movies.
What's coming out this yearthat you're excited for?
Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
Well, in this kind of
vein that we're talking about
here today, the Smashing Machinewhich we brought up earlier,
also Mortal Kombat 2.
I did see the trailer for thatI'm going to be doing a lot of
Mortal Kombat episodes leadingup to that one.
I don't know how I feel aboutKarl Urban as the character he's
going to be playing.
Speaker 1 (01:15:25):
Yeah, was it Johnny
Cage?
Johnny Cage, yeah.
Yeah, I did see a lot ofcontroversy about that.
Speaker 2 (01:15:30):
Well, he's literally
based off of Jean-Claude Van
Damme, so it's like could havegotten Van Damme.
He's an old man now.
So those two for sure, he's anold man now, but um, so, those
two for sure.
Which?
What's his name?
I?
Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
mean that old call
arm is not that young either.
That's true.
Speaker 2 (01:15:42):
Yeah, um, superman,
uh, I'm a big DC guy and this is
the first time in a very longtime where I feel like I can
actually be excited for a DCmovie rather than just accepting
it for what it's going to be Ijust had the superman blizzard
yesterday at dq there's asuperman blizzard.
Speaker 1 (01:15:59):
Yeah, it's like.
Uh, it's blue and has likelittle chunks of birthday cake
in there dude, I know where I'mgoing after this.
Speaker 2 (01:16:05):
I love blizzard uh,
fantastic form.
Speaker 1 (01:16:06):
Very, very excited
for I think it looks cool like
aesthetically so you haven'tgone to the movie, so you
haven't seen captain america orthunderbolts I haven't seen
either one captain america didjust got added to disney plus so
I'll be watching that andthunderbolts before.
Speaker 2 (01:16:22):
Okay, before,
fantastic four, that's
encouraging the last one I saw.
I did see deadpool andwolverine, though that was last
summer I'm also like I'm reallyexcited for I told you earlier
for the predator, the predator, badlands, and then this week, as
we're recording, is whenpredator, killer of killers, is
coming out on hulu do you thinkwe're gonna get alien versus
(01:16:42):
predator again?
I do think that's what they'retrying to get back to.
I'll be sick.
I think they're trying to read.
Speaker 1 (01:16:48):
I think we talked
about this last time when, like
what other franchise they couldcross over with, because it does
technically blade runner isalso part of this universe
because it's the corporation.
Speaker 2 (01:16:54):
I haven't heard
anything about blade runner in
years.
Speaker 1 (01:16:55):
Part of this universe
because it's the corporation I
haven't heard anything aboutblade runner in years, so I kind
of doubt that outside of the uh, that ryan gosling and I think
there's a, I think max has aanime maybe it could be.
Yeah, it could be, I don't knowyeah, um, what's his face?
Speaker 2 (01:17:12):
has been a little
busy with dunes, though, so I
imagine he's dunes coming out.
Speaker 1 (01:17:17):
You know, christopher
noel's movie that they've been
filming has been getting a lotof hype.
Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
Oh yeah, the odyssey
movie oh okay, you, you know
nothing about that.
I I knew he had another one.
It's the half of hollywood's inthere mac damon, tom tom tom.
Speaker 1 (01:17:32):
Holland zendaya.
Uh, robert pattinson, okay somany more.
Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
I can't tell.
Is Tom Holland and Zendaya justlike a package deal at this
point?
Speaker 1 (01:17:41):
I don't know.
Tom Holland was the very firstone announced, so the whole cast
and then several other thanZendaya.
Speaker 2 (01:17:48):
Finally, this is a
ridiculous pick.
The.
Speaker 1 (01:17:54):
Punisher has been in
there too.
Oh, ben Thoreau, ben ThoreauBarnthal.
Speaker 2 (01:18:00):
Dumb pick the Naked
Gun in there too.
Huh, the punisher camera.
Oh, benthrall, benthrall,barnthal, barnthal.
Uh okay, dumb pick the nakedgun very excited for the naked
done, naked gun reboot girl seenthat trailer.
Speaker 1 (01:18:06):
I can obviously tell
she never seen the original yeah
, yeah dude, that's gonna be sohard to get people to get on
that board, I think.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
But that was the case
with uh, the original guy too.
Speaker 1 (01:18:15):
He was such a serious
actor, dude if you like that
one, I think you would likeFriendship with Tim Robinson.
It's nothing that silly likethat but it kind of is at the
same time.
Speaker 2 (01:18:27):
I like those spoof
movies, like all the Mel Brooks
space balls.
I think those movies arehilarious.
Speaker 1 (01:18:32):
But with what's his
name starring in it?
Speaker 2 (01:18:34):
Liam Neeson.
Speaker 1 (01:18:36):
I don't know.
I thought that was kind of aballsy move to have him star in
it, because didn't he just likeget over controversies not too
long ago, like didn't he trygetting almost got cancelled not
too long ago probably.
Speaker 2 (01:18:44):
Yeah, I think he said
something I feel like everybody
has come close at some point.
Speaker 1 (01:18:48):
But you know what?
I am going to be in theaterswatching that movie.
Speaker 2 (01:18:51):
I'm excited for that
one and um you want to be on my
show for Smashing Machine orMortal Kombat 2?
You want to do one of those.
I could do either one of those.
That would be fun.
Speaker 1 (01:19:00):
That would definitely
be fun.
Next week I got Ballerinacoming on.
Ballerina for the podcast, andthen how to Train your Dragon.
That's going to be a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:19:11):
That one does look
good.
My wife loves those movies.
Speaker 1 (01:19:12):
I've never seen them
when I go through and watch them
.
Even the trailer alone looksfantastic.
Speaker 2 (01:19:18):
Good for DreamWorks
to finally now they're doing the
Disney thing of live-actionreboots.
Speaker 1 (01:19:24):
Yeah, there's also a
new Shrek movie coming out.
Speaker 2 (01:19:27):
That's not
live-action is it?
Speaker 1 (01:19:28):
No, oh, thank God.
That's also rumored to be amultiverse kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (01:19:32):
Yeah, what's the
multiverse?
Speaker 1 (01:19:36):
The trailer came out
and one of the daughters is all
growing up.
Now it's played by zendaya andthey're looking at the magic
mirror on the wall and they'relooking at other versions of
shrek and they're like some fromour world, like they're mostly
memes oh, okay, got it peopleare pissed about the animation
because they do look a lot moreslicker.
Speaker 2 (01:19:52):
But someone's saying
that's like a different universe
.
Maybe interesting okay,interesting Okay.
I was thinking like, what otherDreamWorks movies are they
going to try and cross over into?
They're like Chicken Run'sgoing to show up.
Speaker 1 (01:20:04):
Donkey's going to get
his own movie.
Speaker 2 (01:20:06):
Okay, yeah, puss in.
Speaker 1 (01:20:07):
Boots is not going to
be the new Shrek movie.
Speaker 2 (01:20:09):
I heard Well, that
one finished.
Right, they did that.
He got one pretty recently.
Yeah, but he got one prettyrecently, yeah, yeah, but I mean
, like he's not gonna be the newshrek movie, yeah yeah, okay,
donkey's gonna get his own movie.
Speaker 1 (01:20:19):
I think they're are
doing another minions movie.
Minions are despicable.
Me one of those two.
They're milking that franchisetoo.
Oh, absolutely, um, dreamworksis is still doing it like uh,
the new disney anime movies, leo, is coming out soon.
That was kind of cute thatlooks all right.
Speaker 2 (01:20:34):
yeah, what yeah?
What about Smurfs?
Are you going to go see Smurfs?
Speaker 1 (01:20:37):
No, I'm so mad about
that one Like yeah, they got
Rihanna in there.
Speaker 2 (01:20:42):
All they did was okay
.
The plot of this movie istrolls.
We're going to do trolls, yeah, and also that animation.
It looks like a video game.
Speaker 1 (01:20:55):
Like a video game
cutscene the entire time, kind
of yeah, yeah, did they do asmurf movie too not so long ago
with jason siegel something orwas it?
Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
neil patrick harris.
Yeah, one of them.
I'm thinking of the muppetswith jason siegel.
Speaker 1 (01:21:05):
Oh yeah yeah, um, so
I don't know what's connected
with that, really, I don't evensee that one actually, but I
think I saw the first one yeah, some of the stuff, but, like I
said, russell and I'm about tobe I'm about be 30, and these
movies aren't made for usanymore.
Speaker 2 (01:21:20):
Pretty soon I will
have to go see these movies
because my son's three, I wouldsay by five or six he's going to
be like can we go?
To the movies and see.
