Speaker 1 (00:00):
Look sharp, sharp, Be sharp you. Gillett's Blue Blade with
the sharpest edges ever. Haul Gilett's Cavalcado Sports is on
the air from Sportsman Park in Saint Louis. Gilett presents
the fifteenth annual All Star Baseball Game between top ranking
players of the American and National League. Hello everybody, this
(00:22):
is Franz Lock with Mel Allen and Jim Britt greeting
you for the Gellette Safety Razor Company, maker of Gellet razors,
blades and shaving creams. Gillette is your radio host when
outstanding sports events such as Today's Classics, the World Series,
and Kentucky's Derby occurs throughout the year. This is the
second time that the All Star Game has been played
here with Sportsman Park. You'll remember that back in nineteen forty,
(00:45):
the Cardinals were the host clubs. This year, the Saint
Louis Browns of the American League are the host club
and our hats are off to mister Markaman and DeWitt
because they have everything in tip top shape for this
afternoon's ball game.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
They've even manage to.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Get in a good word with the weather man because
this morning it was raining here in Saint Louis, and
the weather man forecast cloudy weather with showers, but we're
happy to say that right at the moment, the sun
is shining very brightly. However, there is a few clouds
in the sky, but we have high hopes that we'll
have an ideal afternoon for.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
This ball play.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
These two clubs have been out on the field for
some time. The American League club was out first, have
gone through their batting practice, and at the moment the
National leaguers are taking there and the clubs, we might say,
have since quite a few souvenir baseballs into the sands,
and it looks like that it's going to be a
capacity crowd here this afternoon. The tickets to this All
Star Game has been sold out for week. The only
(01:45):
thing that you've been able to buy for the last
three or four days have been standing room tickets only.
So if everything turns out okay, it's going to be
a packed house and even a larger crowd than attended
the All Star Game here back in nineteen forty.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
You'll remember in.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
That particular game that that's one of the few times
that the National League has won in the All Star contest,
and that was the first shutout that happened in All
Star plays. In the very second inning, Max West hit
a home run with two men on, and then they
went ahead to score another run along in the eighth inning,
and it was foured to nothing in favor of the
(02:26):
National League. And all this game originally was started through
the efforts of Miss George Ward, the sports edit through
the Chicago Tribune up in Chicago, the same man who
originated the idea of the All Star Football Games, and
it's been carried on ever since, with the exception of
nineteen forty five when the game was out due to
(02:48):
the fact of wartime travel.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
And since it originally started, the American League has won
ten of these victories, for the National League only one.
Four times.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
There's been two of the All Star Games that have
been played at night. One was a twilight contest, all
of the others have been afternoon games.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
And as you reminisce and look around.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
You'll see that only three players are actually active as
players today from the group that originally participated in the
All Star Game away back in nineteen thirty three at
Commissie Park in Chicago, and that happens to be Joe Medwick,
Arkie Vaughn and school boy role. Of course, there's quite
(03:33):
a few others around that are coaches at the present time,
but we mean fellows that are actually still playing baseball.
We'll sort of skimp over some of the scores of
the game since the All Star League started to sort
of bring you up today. You'll remember that back in
nineteen thirty three, the American League team won by a
(03:53):
score of four to two. Then the following year the
game was moved to the Polo Grounds in New York,
in which the American leaguers again won by a score
of ninth to seven. And that's the particular series that
Lefty Grove, or rather left the Hubble. Carl Hubble gave
his great exhibition of pitching when he struck out five
(04:14):
of the greatest hitters in the game in a row.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
In fact, I believe he had six strikeouts.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
In the two innings, and when he walked off in
the mount at the Polo Ground, the stands really rocked
from the ovations that he received. Then there was the
game of nineteen thirty five at the Municipal Stadium in Cleveland,
and the American League again won by a score four
to one. In nineteen thirty six at Bravesfield in Boston.
(04:39):
That was the first win for the National League. The
score in that particular game was four to three in
favor of the National Leaguers.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
The next year, nineteen thirty seven, the.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Game was played at Griffith Stadium in Washington, and the
American Leaguers won by a score of eight to three.
And you'll remember in that particular game, that is the
game where Dissney Dean, while pitching for the National Leaguers,
was hit on the toe by a lion drive off
the bat of Earl April. And we might say that
that was really the start of the downfall of Disney
(05:12):
Dean's pitching career, because he came back and tried to
pitch before the toe was in shape, and naturally he
threw the ball while off balance and it eventually hurt
his arm and he never did get over. The game
of nineteen thirty eight was played in Crosley Field, Cincinnati,
and that was the second win for the National League.
(05:33):
They came out on top of that particular contest by
a score of four to one. In nineteen thirty nine,
the Yankee Stadium in New York and the American.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Leaguers won out by score of three to one.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
The game of nineteen forty, as we mentioned earlier, was
played right here with Sportsman's Part, and the National League
won their third contest by four a four genati. In
nineteen forty one, the game was played at Freak Stadium
in Detroit, and that was another contest that had a
dramatic finish won Ted Williams hit one right at the
(06:07):
tail end of the game to break up the contest.
And then in forty two at the Polo Grounds, the
American League won three to one a night.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Game at Philadelphia.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
In forty three, the American League has won five to
three a night game in forty four at Fort Steeld, Pittsburgh,
the National League won.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Their last contest seven to one no game in nineteen
forty five. In nineteen forty six.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
At Fenway Park, Boston, the American League won by four
twelve and nothing. And then in nineteen forty seven at
Wrigley Field, the American League won by a score of
two to one. There's twenty eight American Junior League in
Baseball players who graduates of Junior League in Baseball participating.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
In this All Star Classic.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Heare of today, at least there's about seventeen on the
American League and.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Ten on the National League if we remember correctly. On adults.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
The ground keepers are out now manicuring field getting the
diamond in shape for the bafternoon's game, and the two
respective pitchers are starting to warm up. We'll run over
the lineup hurriedly for you, and then Jim Brett, who
will do the play by play on the first four
and one halpening this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
We'll check them with you a little later on.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
For the National League, Ritchie Ashburn of Philadelphia and center
field Ratt king Dy to the Saint Louis Cardinals, second
base Stan Musiel of the Cardinals and left field Johnny
mei Is of the New York Giants. At first base,
EMUs Slaughter of the Cardinals and right field Andy pascoor
the Chicago Steps.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Third base Walter Cooper of the New York.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Giants, Kent Seewee Reach of the Brooklyn Dodgers at sharks,
and Ralph Franca of the Brooklyn Dodgers will be the
starting pitcher.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
In the American League.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Tat Mullen of the Detroit Tigers right field Tommy Hendry
of the New York Yankees left field, Blue Pedrou the
Cleveland Indians at short Joe Gordon of the Indians at
second base, Walter hoot Evers of the Detroit Tigers center field,
Ken Keelton of the Indians third base, George McQuinn the
New York Yankees at first base.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Buddy rose Arm of the Philadelphia Athletics will be the catcher.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
And Walter Masterson of the Washington Senators will be the pitcher.
Masterson has won six ball games and lost six. Ralph
Branca has won ten and lost six. The umpires, Charlie
Berry of the American League will be working behind the plate,
the Wild Sort of the National League at first base,
(08:29):
Paparella the American League at second base, and Beans Rearden
of the National League at third. Now these men will alternate,
that is, Barry and Arden will alternate from after four
and one half things.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Barry will go down to third, and Read will come
into the plate the way we've been informed.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
And the second same thing applies to the two umpires
working at first and second. Paparella on sure we understand
that Bert Shopton, who managed the Brooklyn Dodgers last year,
is going to toss out the first ball this afternoon
instead of Commissioner Channer. The Commissioner has asked Bert Shotton
to talk out the first ball due to the fact
(09:07):
that he managed the team and is not participating in
the All Star Game this year. As you know, the
manager on the previous winners is always the man in
charge during the All Star Game. This has been on
all occasions, with exception of the first game, which started
in nineteen thirty three at Commissi Park when John McGraw
managed the National League and Connie Mack was in charge
(09:28):
of the American League. Well, the pitchers are warming up
at the present time, the groundkeepers are still getting the
end feeling shaped, and after the showers that we had
this morning, the diamond really looks like it's in tip
top condition for real ball game. We've also been informed
by Commissioner Chandler that if this game happens to be
(09:49):
tied at the end of nine innings and gets into
a long drawn out struggle, if it gets dark, the
lights will be turned on and they'll continue right on.
And now the umpires are coming out on the field,
there'll be the little powow discussion at home plate pertaining
to the ground road and then they'll be ready to go.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Here it's sportsman's part.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Right down the right field line, it is exactly three
hundred and ten feet from home plate to the right
steel line.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
There's a screen in front of the right field provisions.
It extends out into.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Right center, and after that distance the pavision is open.
They happen to hit a line drives into there, it's
a home run. But any ball up against the screen
in right field, you make what you can get. But
in order to get a home run in right field,
it has to go on top of the right field provision.
In center field, to the right of the flag pole,
(10:44):
the distance is four hundred and twenty two feet, and
just to the left of the flag pole it's four
twenty five and a little further over to the left
four twenty six. That's the deepest point in the field.
How straight down the left field line, the distance is
three hundred fifty one feet from home plate to the
wall there where they the grand stand on the bleacher's knee.
(11:09):
The s ballboard extends in left center, and we might
add that the stall board is one of.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
The most up to date in the Major League.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
It's conducted by a boy named Lou Adamy, who is
very quick on the trigger and handling balls and strike
and makes it very easy while the man giving a
play by play, the ships to stay up with balls
and strikes on the batter. The ground keepers are still
working out there. That's been taking a little extra time,
(11:40):
but there's quite a few there. There's temporary box seats
on the field today for the game, which takes care
of three rows extending from the players dougouts down beyond
the access and practically down to the bullpen in both
right on left field. We understand from Rocky Harris that's
(12:02):
Richie and Colman will be the other two pitchers to
follow up from the American League. And now just before
we gets ready, we said Richie, we mean Rashie. Richie
is the youngster of the centerfielder called at Phillies Richie
Ashburn is his name, and now doing the first four
and a half inning so the play by play this afternoon.
(12:24):
A man who hardly needs any introduction you baseball fans
up around Boston. He does the home games of both
the Boston Braves and the Boston Red Sox. I believe
this is his fourth All Star games. You've also heard
him on World Series play, none other than Jim Britt.
Come in, Jim, thank you, Franz, good afternoon everyone. In
just a moment, I suspect we shall have the national
(12:46):
anthem and then the baseball festivities will get really underway.
But before that, I would like, even before he comes
in for the last four and a half innings of
the play by play description of this Gillett sponsored nineteen
forty eight All Stars Major League Baseball game, to present
again my colleague Mel Allen, who's broadcasts of the New
(13:06):
York Yankee games during the regular season are so popular
throughout the metropolis. Now, hello to everybody. Jim Israel as well,
be working with you again. And incidentally, we're getting ready
to get underway, and I don't want to take up
any more time than necessary and be back a little
bit later on for the last half of the game.
But it is interesting to let you fans know that
Commissioner Chandler made the statement. He said, even though it
(13:28):
isn't very likely, he said, in the event the ballgame
is tied up and it becomes dark, he said, we're
going to turn on the lights and keep playing until
the ball game has reached the conclusion So if you
folks got any plans ahead for the evening, I suggest
you kind of hold them in a bands because you
never can tell. We all have them played on midnight. Okay, Jim,
(13:49):
welcome misplanes or mistrains. This ball game is going to
go to a conclusion. But now before it gets underway,
we pause for station identification. Meman look sharp, heel sharp
the sharp use Gillette blue blade with the sharpest edges
ever home. This is the mutual broadcasting system back at
(14:29):
Scortsland's Park in Saint Louis. The umpires, who are Charlie
Berry and Joe Papperella of the American League, Bill Stewart
and Beans Rearden of the National League are now taking
their positions and ad justin Woman, the game will officially
get underway. Eddie Dyer has gone down to third base,
which would indicate that he may be the third base
coach or Leo Durocher, the manager of the National League
(14:52):
golf Guards. It is highly improbable that two of the
greatest of the American leaguers, Joe Demagio and Ted Williams,
we'll see service. Demagio is suffering both from lame heels
and thornees Williams toreloose cartilage from one of his ribs
and swinging savagely at a missed strike at Fenway Park
(15:13):
not long ago.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
He is not likely to see service at all.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
There go the American leaguers out on the field, and
they are led by Pat Mullin, who immediately will go
to right field. So defensively, it will be Mullin in
right field, Henrik in left field, Boodreaux shortstop, Gordon second base,
(15:40):
Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem before Richie Ashbourne, the
(16:54):
sensation of young Philadelphia phil centerfielder steps into the batter's
box to await the first pitch of the Spectacles Waller
Masterson of the Washington Nationals. Let me repeat for you
the starting batting orders or the National League Ashburne of
Philadelphia center fields, Shane Dean of the Cardinals second base,
(17:17):
Musial of the Cardinals left fields, Maes of the Giants
first base, splatter of Saint Louis in right field, Halfco
of the Cubs third base.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
There goes Bert Shotton's first pitch.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
And it is taken by Buddy Roser, and Buddy then
clips it back to Bert Shotton, who piloted the Brooklyn
Dodgers to their nineteen forty eight nineteen forty seven National
League championship, and Commissioner A. B. Chandler autographs the ball
and insists that Bert keep it. This program comes to
you by authority of the Commissioner of Baseball. It is
(17:53):
intended only for the private use of our audience. Any
publication or reproduction of this program, and any commercial use
of them, is prohibited.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
In the National League.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
After Enos Slaughter, who will play right field and bat
in the number five position. If you're scoring the game,
mark down the name of third baseman Andy Papkow of
the Chicago Cubs in the number seven position, Catcher Walker
Cooper of New York at shortstop Pee Wee Reese of Brooklyn,
(18:23):
and the starting pitcher Ralph Franke of Brooklyn number thirteen.
He flaunts superstision with it and has a record of
ten victories six defeats. Or the bombs of ebbetts Field.
The bumbs, of course, is a term of affection and
endearment bestowed upon the Brooklyn Dodgers by one of the
most rapid sets of baseball enthusiasts in the nation. Defensively,
(18:44):
Pat Mullen will be in right field for the American Leaguers, hoot.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Eavers of Detroit.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
His teammate will be in cider field, Tommy Henrick of
the Yankees and left field, and the nfield will be
in McQuinn of New York, Gordon of Cleveland, Manager lou
Boudreaux of Cleveland, Keltner at third and the battery Masterson
and Rosar Ashburn, a blonde left hander, is up, and
the first pitch is the ground ball that goes into
the glove of Gordon. Gordon throws the first can't get him.
(19:10):
A magnificent played by Gordon, who went back a first base,
made a cross headed stab.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Left high off the ground, and he fired it. He
went back of second.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Base, fire to to first base, but the throw was
so high that mcgwinn was taken off the bag and
the official scorer rules base hip Red Shane Deans, formerly
of Germantown, Illinois, now a Saint Louis and is up.
He's a switch batter, batting left, bob all right back,
strike one. Masterson tried to powder over a fast ball.
(19:44):
This is Ashburn's first All Star Games. He entered it
with a batting average of three fifty one. He is
the second highest batter in the National League, and of
course that is his first All Star hip, one of
many to come. I'm certain Shane DEAs stands straight away.
Ashburn leads off there he digs for second.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Here's a throw from.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Roser to Boudreaux and it throws over second base.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Backed up by Gordon, and it's a steal for right Burn.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
The count is base ball one, strike one, and it
is a stolen base for Richie Ashburn in the National League.
He just gives a posing pitcher's pips. So now third
baseman Ken Caltner, he is laying in just a bit
in the event of a bunch, Masterson pitches and it's
low and away from a left handed batter.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
For ball two, two and one. That was a fastball.
Starfielder Hoodivers is playing straight away.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Left fielder Tommy Henrick gets straight away, but the right
fielder Pat Mullen is playing fairly close to the line. Now,
perhaps at a signal from the bench, he moves over
to the left. Masterson throws and there's a swing of
the mess a sharp breaking fastball that's broke right down
in the dirt. Two balls and two strikes. Melott, the
manager of the New York Giants, is the first base coach.
(20:59):
He came up under the great John McGraw. Eddie Dyer,
the manager of the Saint Louis Cardinals, is coaching at third.
Charlie Berry the played on fire. Ashbourn is on second base,
taking a good lead to pitch to Shandy's There's a
ground ball that goes down the third baseline, an nassisted
put out the first baseline. An unassisted put out is
made by George McQuinn, and Ashburn moves up.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
Ashbourn is on third with just one out, and one
of the great Saint.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
Louis Cardinals stars of Saint Louis baseball history, Stanley Museal,
comes up with a current season's average of four hundred
and three. His All Star average is down to oneint
eighty two. This is his fifth All Star game. And
the outfield moves around to the right. The infield pulls
in to try to cut off the run. Masterson pitches
(21:52):
strike call fastball that's just fit the inside corner of
the place. The temperature is somewhere in the upper eighties.
The humidity is high, but it's the kind of a
baseball day the players professed to prefer. Here comes Bob
All that one karened off, a left chin guard Buddy
Roser into the first base dance and the connast right too.
(22:14):
Big Johnny Mize, who is the veteran of the National
League All Star playing in his eighth game today, is
near the on deck circle. Ashburn takes a conservative lead
off third base. The deepest of the infielders is second
baseman Joe Gordon, who's playing about twenty feet to the
right of second base. Masters and pitches. There goes a
(22:37):
long ride to right better field, and that looks like
a home run. Get air till not a Stanley Musial,
(23:03):
just wallap an enormous home run atop the right center
field stands, and all a centerfielder Hoodi Evers could do
was watch as Ashbourn scored ahead of him from third
and the National Leaguers lead to nothing.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
Here's Big Johnny Mize. With the season's average of two
eighty three.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Inside ball one, the National League has drawn first blood
victor and only four of the previous fourteen All Star Games.
Leodiu Rocher's crew has struck swiftly in the first inning.
The pitch strike call a slow curveball that coasted over
Bilt high. The ball was a top The right center
(23:46):
field stands just to the left of the three hundred
and fifty four foot mark Musial's drive. There's a fastball
low two and one. Bucky Harris plans to follow Masterson
with Vick Rashie of the Yankees and Joe Coleman of
the Eights.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
There is no warm up this year. The outfield is
deep to the right, so is the infield.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
There's a ground ball and that one goes right by
Gordon in a center field for another base hit.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
It was between Gordon and second base, and mis has
the third National League hit.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
That will enhance his batting average in the All Star Game,
which had been only won seventy six. The enthusiastic welcome
was for one of the great players of National League history,
Enus Slotter.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Of the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
He's playing right field in this batting order and has
a batting average for the season of three fourteen, an
All Star Game average of two fifty, and this is
his fifth appearance in All Star spangles.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
The outfield a little to the right is straight away
the left side of the enfield in and.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
There is a curve ball right over the outside corner
to a left handed batter for strike one. Country Slaughter
as he said or known, and his throw will forever
be remembered to cut off a Red Sox run in
the World Series of nineteen forty six, as will his
mad dash from first to score on Walker's single ball
one and one. Slaughter was one of the heroes of
(25:19):
that nineteen forty six World Series, as was Harry the
cat Rookeen, who won three ball games. Masterson stretches, Mis
leads off. There's one in the dirt. It gets fire.
Roster Mis goes to second base, and we're awaiting the
decision of the official scorer, wild pitch or pass ball.
Speaker 3 (25:39):
Ball.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
A pass ball is the ruling.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
The roster is charged with a battery error, and for
the third time, the National Leaguers have a runner on
second base. Now, the left side of the enfield goes
back just a little, the right side with Joe Gordon,
the second baseman deep waits for the pitch. Slaughter digs
in and it's low and outside to make it three
and one. And there hustling out to the bullpen is
(26:04):
Yogi Bara he may be sent out to warm up.
Joe Dobson of the Boston Red Sox Vera just carried
the message.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
John Shuley is doing the warming out.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
The official scorer just changed that pass ball to a
wild pitch, so it is a battery error charged to Masterson,
not to Rosers three and one swinging a miss. That
was a slow curve ball that broke down in the dirt,
and the count at three and two. Slaughter's action indicated
(26:42):
that he was a little sorry he'd gone after that.
The score National League Golf Stars two American League is nothing.
In the very first inning, with only one man out,
the pitch all four that was a little too high.
It seemed to catch the corner, but it was up
around the neck. A base on balls for Slaughter. Masterson
has runners on first and second with one out and
(27:04):
Andy half Goll, the Chicago top third baseman, up with
an impressive three forty two batting average. This is his
second All Star game. In the first one, he had
one hit and two trips. He's a right hander.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Mall one.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
Half Goal is the Chicagoan, but originally he came from Boyceville, Wisconsin.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
Walter Masterson has slipped his.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
Glove and he's moping his brow. It's a warm day,
and now he takes off his eyeglasses. Those who do
wear eyeglasses on days such as this are sometimes bothered
by fog and it's necessary to keep them clean.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
Joe Dobson of the Red Sox is warming up.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
Half goal uses a closed stamps, but Masterson decides not
to pitch.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
Has built Stewart the first base on fire.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
Makes a motion to a couple of vendors who are
out in the bullpen area for the National Leaguers, and
he wants them to get off the field. Dan Muzio's
first All Star Game home run gave the National Leaguers
a two to nothing lead in the first inning. Now
there are two on with one out. The pitch to
(28:23):
path goal. There's a ground ball that goes to Keltner.
He steps on third, flips the first and the throw
is not in time as it hits the dirt bounds
into mcquinn's glove. Though it is a fourth play on
Johnny Mize at third base. Keltner unassisted, with Slaughter moving
to second base on the fielder's.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
Choice and path goal reaching first.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
A good prove by Keltner would have retied the side,
but the ball bounded in the dirt about ten or
fifteen feet in front of m quinn. Walker Cooper of
the New York Giants, the catcher and the number seven
batter for the National Leaguers in the first inning, comes
up season's average at two fifty seven, but an impressive
three eighty five All Star mark. This is his sixth
(29:04):
All Star game. He's a big, husky right hander. Outside
ball one. You'll be interested to know that his brother
Morton pitched an exhibition game for the New York Giants
last night against Buffalo. Allowed two hits and only one
run in four innings, and the Giants won the ball
game eight to three. Masterson pitches, there's a ground ball
that goes to Caltoner elects to make to play the
(29:26):
second base to Gordon, and Pasco is forced going in
five to four, so it's another fielder's choice to wind
up the first inning with two National League runs on
three hits, no errors, a base on balls, two runners
left National League two, American League nothing. Baseball has yet
(29:47):
to produce a more forceful figure than the late John McGraw,
who was supreme in his field for over two generations.
When leadership endurers years on end, you may be sure
it's based on exceptional merits. Take the Gillette Blue Blade,
for example. It continues to be number one in popularity
because it's number one in shaving performance. No other razor
(30:08):
blade is a sharp, smoothly finished, or long lasting. Now
to enjoy extra convenience at no extra cost, buy Gellette
Blue blades in the modern Gellette dispenser, which deals them
out one at a time, unwrapped, ready for any Gellette razor.
The dispenser holds twenty blades forty superlative shaving edges. You
(30:29):
pay only ninety eight cents price of the blades alone.
Look sharp, seal sharp, be sharp. Use Gellette Blue blades
with the sharpest edges ever honed. The score is National
League All Stars, two American League All Stars. Nothing going
(30:58):
into the last half of the person. Pat Mullen, the
Detroit Tigers, who was playing left field in right field
in this batting order, will face Ralph Branka, a ten
game winner for Brooklyn thanks to Ashburn's singles, stolen base
and infield out of New Zeald's first All Star Game
home run. The National Leaguer's lead to nothing, Frank he
(31:19):
gets it. Mullin's batting average for the year is two
nine to seven outside ball one. This is his first
All Star game. By the way, the coaches are Charlie
Dressen and Red Cordon of New York Dressing at third base,
Cordon at first base. Ranka pitches swinging a mess. Rank
(31:40):
A fired at fastball. It was spelt high at third
base for the National League. Andy Pafkow shortstop, Pee Wee
Reese second base. Red Shane Dean's he injured himself slid
a few times before today's game, indicated his readiness to play.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
And the first basement is Big John Myze.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
The outfield musiald Ashburn and Slaughter the pitch Hi outside
a fastball two and one. Every seed is sold out
here at Sportsman's Park, and the weather man has been
good enough to cooperate to the extent of giving extremely
hot weather but rainless.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Here.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
It comes foul ball almost in the booth to our left,
and then it's rattled right down into the first base stands.
The count two balls, two strikes. This is old home week,
so to speak.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
For baseball. You come to an All Star game, as
is the case with the World Series, and.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
You see baseball characters whom you admired when you were
a kid, who have drifted away from the game, many
of them, many of them are still with it. The pitch,
there's a foul ball, and it bounds back down again.
Two balls and two strikes. Joe Cronin, who long since
hung off his number four with the Boston Red Taws,
(32:56):
had a chance to catch another one now.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
Two and two of the count.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Third baseman Pasco is playing close strike three, slinging a
fast curveball was thrown by Ralph Branca, and he strikes
off Pat Mullen to open the ball game. The second
batter is one of baseball's most underrated performers in the
opinion of many baseball experts. Tommy Henrick of Maslon, Ohio
(33:26):
and the New York Yankees. This is his third All
Star Game. His All Star batting average is two hundred,
his seasons mark two fifty. He's a left hander, uses
a slightly closed stance, and he looks at a ball
that comes in low. One ball, no strikes. Ranca, a big,
husky right hander who has had a lot to do
with the sudden surge of the Durosier Dodgers, recently swinging
(33:51):
in a mess an easy swing and a fastball. It
was difficult to determine whether Henrick tried to stop his
swing or was an ten upon swinging easily in order
to lost the ball over the heads of the infielders.
The outfield plays into the right one and one the count.
The National League leads two nothing, last of the first
(34:13):
none on one out, high and wide, two and one.
It's three hundred and ten feet down the right field
foul line to the stands, three fifty one down the
left field line, and four hundred and twenty three to
the flag pole in dead center field. Rank of pitches high.
(34:33):
Brion one, waiting his turn in the on deck circle
is the great manager of the Cleveland Indians. Three balls,
one strike.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
The count.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
Red Cardon, who is coaching gun at first base, is
anxious to have a base runner so he'll have someone
to chat with.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
The wind up.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
Strike calls Rank a throw a moderate ball that caught
the outside corner. Henrick's rear foot is almost outside the
batter's box. His heel touches his toes out the payoff
bitch coming up. Franca studies the sign of his catcher.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Here it is.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
Strike three. He's called out on strike, but Henrik was
under the impression that he had not completed the swing,
and lou Boudreau is arguing was Charlie Barry. Henrick was
about a third of the way down the first base
line when he was called out. There's the second straight
strikeout or Branca, Mullin and Henrik. Here is Loui Boudreau
(35:38):
with a batting average of three fifty five. He has
an All Star batting average of four hundred, by the way,
and has appeared in five games. He hit a two
run homer in the All Star Game at the Polo
Grounds in nineteen forty two to help send more Cooper
down to defeat, and he hit it his first time up.
He bets from that peculiar crouch of his right hander.
(36:00):
He let the curve ball go by on the inside.
He wasn't even set to swing that trip one ball,
no strikes. He is the only manager in either batting
order the pitch drike call. That fast curve ball of
Branca's came over knee high.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
One in one.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
There will be an umpiring switch at the end of
four and a half innings, so that's the umpiring is
broken up and each league has a man back of
the plight.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
There's a ground ball that goes to the left of
the mound.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Reef comes in fast, picks it up, throws over the
first mis gets it and it's a one two three
inning for Ralph Ranca.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
That play went six to three.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
Reef two eyes, no runs, no hits, no errors, none
left and Leo de Rosier's own right handed star, Ralph Franca,
with a record of ten and six, is off to
a most impressive start.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
In the first half of the second inning of this game.
See Wee.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
Reese, Ralph Brank, and Richie Ashburn will be the first
three batters at the moment.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
However, there is time in the event you just joined.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
This Gillette broadcast to bring you up to date on
the batting orders for the National League center field Ashburn, Philadelphia,
second base, Shane Deans, Saint Louis left field, Musial Saint Louis,
first base, Mize, New York right field, Slaughter.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
Saint Louis third base path.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
Goal Cubs catcher Walker Cooper, New York shortstop Reese Brooklyn
pitching Franca.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
Of Brooklyn, Charlie Dressen by the way, went out to
the bullpen.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
To deliver some information to Joe Dobson, and Dobson has
started to warm up again. First up, facing Walter Masterson
is pee Wee Reese. He files one back against the screen.
The Kentucky Colonel, as he's better known, Peewee, another nickname,
a little right hander, former National Marble champion, swung at
(38:17):
that first one as though he expected to have luck
similar to that of Richie Ashburn and Stanley Mwseald. He
has the season's mark of three hundred no hits in
two All Star trips outside one in one. This is
Peewee's third All Star Games, and he sat through one
of them in nineteen forty six at Boston with his
(38:38):
neck in a harness after it was suspected that he
had fractured a vertebrae. Masterson pros swinging a mess. He
took a good cut once down to his right knee.
Eddie Dyer and Mellow tore the coaches at third and first.
It's the shirt sleeve crowd here at Sportsman's Park in
the fifteenth All Star Game.
Speaker 2 (39:00):
Game SKIP nineteen forty five.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
Because of wartime travel emergencies here it comes h inside
two and two.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
Not much wind blowing, It isn't the factor. Eddie Dyer
is doing a little rooting down on the third base
coaching box.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
As Masterson winds up delivers strike three, swinging Seewe Reese
becomes the first National League strikeout victim, and Big Ralph
Branca starts the trek from the National League All Star
dug out on the right side or first base side
of the diamond, out to the plate and he takes
a bat handed him by Richie Ashburn, and the big
(39:42):
lad is given a good round of applause. He swings
as he throws right handed. The National Leaguers have a
two nothing lead on the strength of Stanley Musicals two
run first inning home runs. The pitch swinging the mess,
strike one, Ashburn in the on deck circles. Here it
(40:08):
comes another swing, strike two. Masterson doesn't seem to be
wasting much time with his pitching opponent. He's just powering
that fastball right down the alley and the outfield, figuring
the Branco will swing laid his station.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
To the right foul ball.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
That's bounded back into the stands and not again down
here Ashburn, the National League All Star mascot.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Where's the Saint.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
Louis Cardinal bat boy's uniform? The count is straight away,
two strikes.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
The pitch.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
There's a foul ball, and we almost got that would
have been bad for the bridge work department had it
come all the way up.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Two strikes.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
The counts the fast ball high and down the middle,
and our microphone is almost perfectly on a line from
home plate through the pitcher's box to second base. Here
it is, there's a slow roller down the third base line.
Keltner comes up with it and he guns to throw
the first base and it is taken for the out.
Keltner flips it over to McQuinn for a five to
(41:19):
three out, third to first and with two men out
in the first half of the second inning, Ritchie Ashburn
comes up.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
In games in which the Philadelphia Phills have played.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
I have clocked Ashburn in three point four seconds going
down that first base line many a time, and Ben
Chapman is willing to put him up against any other
base runner in either league. He says, co headed youngster
who can run like a wind a left hander. He
beat out and hit the Gordon his first time. There's
the bunch, but it's filed back. He's perfectly willing to
(41:52):
pit his speed against that of any third baseman, shortstop,
second basement or first sacker in the business when it
comes to pushing or dragging one. He already owns the
game's first stolen base and has had an impressive All
Star Game debut. Masterson pitches, there's a file ball that
(42:15):
came right back up, struck him without injury. Charlie Berry
wants to see the ball, and it's handed to him
by Buddy Roger. The only American league warming up at
the moment is Joe Dobson, and now he is being
warmed up by his own battery mate, Bertie Tebot. A
little earlier, it was Johnny Shildy. Here's a pitch. There's
(42:43):
a ground file to the right of the first base line.
Melotte feels that ball flips it back. Not a single
player is outstunning himself. So intense is the heat. They
prefer the cool reaches of the two dugouts. The houtfield
is playing a little to the left. Straight away, here
(43:05):
comes there's a high file ball that's drifting into the
third base stands.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
The count still two strikes.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
Masterson acted as though he hadn't been warmed up in
that first inning. He certainly hadn't settled down, because before
he did, Ashburn greeted him with a hit the second
Solar base once to third on Shane deanstonfield out and
Musial powdered to home run. There goes a high pop
up to deep short stop, but the left fielder Henry
(43:37):
comes in and.
Speaker 2 (43:38):
He takes it.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
Lou Boudreau couldn't have reached it, and it's a pop
up to left field. No runs, no hips, no errors,
none left. The score is National League goll Stars, two
American League golf Stars, nothing as plenty of You know,
the greatest pitching exhibition of all time took.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
Place in nineteen five. That was the year of the
all shut out World Series.
Speaker 1 (44:03):
Believe me, the customers got their money's worth and then
some yes, and so will you when you ask for
the improved Gellett Superspeed Raiser, the greatest shaving value ever offered.
With this razor, you change blades instantly, twist it opens,
sip gets loaded, Twist again, and you're ready to shave.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
To clean.
Speaker 1 (44:23):
Simply loosen the handle, rint and shape. Make no mistake,
this is a precision instrument, not a gatchet. There's nothing
to fit together, nothing to jam or clog. You save time,
save busts, and enjoy the swellest shaves ever. Ask for
the improved Gellette Superspeed razor with ten blade Gellette dispenser.
It's a big dollar fifty value for only a dollar.
(44:52):
Now we pause for station identifications. This is the mutual
broadcasting system going into the last half of the second inning.
With second baseman Joe Gordon, the cleanup batter leading off
(45:14):
for the American League the National League off Stars lead
to nothing. Gordon is a right handed batter with a
two sixty seasons average, appearing in his seventh Fall Star game.
The outfield plays him to the left. Ranca throws a
fast ball low offside ball one on deck hoot Evers and.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
In the hole.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
Ken Keltner of Cleveland. Franca is being very deliberate. He
has a two nothing lead, swinging a mess.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
He fired that fast curveball, which is most effective, and
he keeps it low. One in one.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
The coaches are Charlie Dressing and Red Cordon of the Yankees.
At third and first. Here comes Hi. That one took
off a little a fairly slow curve and the count
is two and one. Third base Mananti Pathco is playing
fairly deep, and the left fielder his museal is way
(46:13):
back fast inside three and one, Musial, Ashburn, and Slaughter
in the outfield from left to right. The nfield from
first base around to third is made up of Mize,
Shane Deams, Reese, and Pasco. The catcher Walker Cooper. The
pitcher Ralph Branca. Ranka gets set strike calls. That was
(46:39):
a fast ball that caught the outside three and two.
Now Gordon faces the payoff pitch, as several of his
colleagues have. Franca has two strikeouts so far and he's
faced only three batters.
Speaker 2 (46:55):
There goes a high fly ball towards left center field.
Speaker 1 (46:58):
Musial is over calling for us, and he takes it
about three hundred and fifteen or twenty feet out. Gordon
lies to left to open the second inning. Hoot Evers
of the Detroit Tigers the center fielder up. He's playing
the possession that the fans wanted to see filled by
the great Joe Demasio of the New York Yankees. But
(47:20):
Demagio is injured to the expense that he will see
limited service if any. Evers has the season's average with
three twenty nine, and this is his first All Star Game.
He's a right hander, a fastball inside ball one. There
(47:42):
are six National League teams represented in this batting order
at the moment this defensive lineup.
Speaker 2 (47:47):
There's a drive down the left field line. Usil goes back,
but he can't get it, and it is a home run.
Speaker 1 (47:53):
Hooteavers homers to make it two to one National Leaguers.
The records don't indicate whether any other American leaguer ever
(48:14):
hit a whole run his first time up in an
All Star Game. We're checking to determine whether or not
the information is available. But Evers broke in with a
bang and it is two to one National Leaguers with
one out on the second inning and Ken Keltner, another
right hand, are up.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
This is his seventh All Star Game. Ball one high inside.
Speaker 1 (48:37):
Keltner is one of the big reasons why the Cleveland
Indians are in first place in the American League currently.
Speaker 2 (48:43):
His All Star Game.
Speaker 1 (48:44):
Average is two fourteen. The bitch high for ball two
to a nothing Franka and Cooper a Dodger and a
Giant two balls and no strikes. That drive was just
to the left of the three hundred and fifty eight mark.
(49:07):
There's a foul ball that's drifting into the first base stans,
and the count is two and one, two and one
account hi three and one, three balls, one strike. So far,
home runs have accounted for all free runs. Museual's two
run homer for the National leaguers in the first inning
(49:28):
and evers homer with none on in this one.
Speaker 2 (49:32):
Swinging in the.
Speaker 1 (49:32):
Mess, three balls, two strikes, Keeltner swung as though he
wanted to emulate the example of Boots.
Speaker 2 (49:41):
He took a good savage cut at the ball.
Speaker 1 (49:43):
The out there plays him, the outfield plays him deep
to the left, and the infield plays him around to
the left. They give him the right field line. There's
a foul ball drifting back and out. The count's still
three and two. Already the heat is beginning to take
it told of the players. The uniforms look moist. This
(50:05):
is the sort of a baseball game where no one
will be required to go the distance. The two managers
will try to give as many of the fans representatives
an opportunity to play as they can.
Speaker 2 (50:15):
Here's the pitch.
Speaker 1 (50:16):
There's ball four fastball inside and Lowell and Franka now
is in a situation with another base runner. The first one,
of course, went all the way around. Whoivers. George McQuinn,
the veteran New York Yankee first sacker, comes up. His
All Star Game batting average is only one twenty five.
(50:37):
This is his third appearance, but his batting average for
the Yankees this year is two six eighths. He stands
straight up in the batter's box with a closed stance,
feet close together. The third baseman plays him in swinging
in the mess. He took a left handed cut at
a fast curved ball at first base. Johnny Mize is
(50:58):
holding the runner Ken Celton a very close. Johnny Say
of the Boston Braves is warming up for the National Leaguers,
a right hander with eleven wins outside one and one.
(51:19):
Saint's record is eleven and six. He has won just
one more than Ralph Branca, who is on the mound
for the National Leaguers at the moment. McQuinn waits, and
there's a good curve ball. It breaks right over. George
just cocked his head and took it. And the cod
has one ball, two strikes. Joe Dobson Boston Reds Thoughts
(51:42):
is still warming up for the American leaguers, and he
may start off the first half of the third inning.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
Here it is outside ball three, three and two.
Speaker 1 (51:56):
Branc has just breezed right through that first half inning
buck out, Mullins, struck out, Henrick.
Speaker 2 (52:02):
And Boudreau tapped weekly to pee Wee Reese.
Speaker 1 (52:04):
Ralph takes his cap off Red Shane Dean's deepens his
position a little for half some instructions. Under instructions from
the bench, the left field line is open because Pathco
is playing in about twenty feet. Miz is right on
the bag. Keltner leads off just a little. Here's the
payoff pitch, and there's a high fly ball going to centerfield.
(52:25):
Ashbourn has his eye on it all the way as
he comes in to take it. There is the second out.
McQuinn flies straight away to centerfield to Ashburn. Keltner returns
to first base and Buddy Rosa comes up. Buddy is
mister Connie Mack's catcher and is one of the main
stays of the phenomenal Athletics, who with one of the
(52:48):
finest pitching staffs in either league, are knocking at Cleveland's
door pathgoll came over to exchange a word of encouragement
with the pitcher, Ralph frank This is rosers third All
Star game. He has the season's average of two to
sixteen an All Star record of one sixty six low
(53:08):
in the dirt ball one. The possibility of a pinchhater
from Masterson suggests itself. Should Rosa get a board. Dobson
is still warming up, and so is Johnny Saine for
the National Leaguers. There's a throw to first, but Keltner
danced back. Maz made no tag. The score is National
(53:29):
League two American League one. Franket delivers and there goes
a fly ball toward right field. Slaughter moves over toward
the line. He takes it and Ross fly to right
field retires the side.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
In the last half of the.
Speaker 1 (53:47):
Second inning, one run evers home run, no errors, just
the one hit, a base on balls, and one runner.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
Left on base.
Speaker 1 (54:00):
In the two innings, the National Leaguers still lead by
the narrowest possible margin.
Speaker 2 (54:05):
Two to one.
Speaker 1 (54:17):
The first three men up in the third inning for
the National Leaguers will be Red Shaney, Stan Musical.
Speaker 2 (54:22):
And Johnny Mize.
Speaker 1 (54:23):
Now did you suspect that it was going to be
the National League that would unleash its.
Speaker 2 (54:28):
Power so quickly to take a lead as has been
the case.
Speaker 1 (54:32):
Well, in an all starry game and you get so
many glittering performers together, you never can tell what's going
to happen.
Speaker 2 (54:40):
And in this instance, and this is not any sort of.
Speaker 1 (54:41):
An alibi because in our position we see all teams.
It doesn't make a great deal of difference. It's the
outcome of the game. But the American League's power pitchers
are not in action. Waller Mathson is one of the best.
He worked Saturday, however, was knocked out of the box
after several innings and perhaps wasn'ton the best of shape
for the game, maybe didn't warm.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Up enough as you indicated.
Speaker 1 (55:03):
But incidentally, Jim I just ran upstairs with the press
box to check and they're working further.
Speaker 2 (55:08):
Hoot Evers, who is Joe Demand? Joseptitute in this game hit.
Speaker 1 (55:13):
As many home runs and one time in bat as
Demand that hit an eighth previous All Star Games, but
it may not be the first time that a first
man ever hit a home run. The first time up
Max West did it in thirty nine. Here is Red
Shane Deans leading off in the third and he files
that first one away for strike one. Well, one thing's
(55:33):
certain hoot Evers debut in an All Star Game uniform
will go down in the record books. Is one of
the more memorable. Shane Dean's grounded out to first baseman
George mcquinn's first time up, Masterson winds up, fires it
and that's a curveball outside one and one, and now
(55:56):
Vic Rashie is warming up for the American leaguers. Dobson
was to have been used and the event Masterson got
into trouble, apparently, Walter pitches and there's a high pop
up to the right side, a.
Speaker 2 (56:07):
Foul ball being chased by McQuinn.
Speaker 1 (56:09):
He goes through the coaches box and he makes the
catch directly in front of the National League dugout. Shane
Deans files out the first baseman George McQuinn one out
in the third, pinning for the National Leaguers, who lead
go to one and the applause is as you might
puspect for Stanley Musial of Donora, Pennsylvania, one of the
(56:31):
most popular baseball players ever to come down the Major
League Pike. His season's batting average of four h three
is the only major League mark at the moment above
four hundred. Masterson lost control of the ball he held,
it slipped off the rubber. I believe, didn't seem to
have injured himself, and never did deliver the pitch. If
(56:52):
you were looking for a perfect book, that would have
been it had there been runners on. Now he throws
outside ball one. That was an oddity, but as far
as the play of the game is concerned, it meant
nothing except that the crowd seemed to be delighted by it.
Here comes there goes a drive to center field. It's
(57:15):
sinking fast, the bat is broken, and it's in there
for a base hit. That bat broke completely in half.
He held a handle going down the first base line
and the rest of the bat flew out into the infield,
halfway between first base and the pitcher's mound for Musial's
second hit and the fourth National League hit of the
ball game, a single decenter for stam He's on first
(57:38):
and Big Johnny Mice comes up. My single descenter is
last time. Here's the pitch, strike, call the fastball. My
single through the middle his first time that was Museial's
fourth hit in thirteen trips to the plate in an
(57:59):
all Stark capacity, but this is the first game in
which he has really started off impressively. Masterson pitches, there's
a ground ball that one goes over to Joe Gordon,
Gordon to Boudreau.
Speaker 2 (58:10):
Boudreaux fumbles the ball and he is out at second base.
Speaker 1 (58:14):
He picked the ball up just in time to get
Stanley Museial at second, but of course the double play
opportunity went by the board and very nearly both runners
were safe. It was a high bouncing ground ball, a
very slow one to the right of second base, and
in the interest of the double play, Gordon decided to
flip the ball over to Boodreau. Had a force play
(58:34):
been required, he obviously would have made the play himself.
So the force out on Museal at second base is
four to six. Gordon to Boudreau. Lou dropped the ball
on the left field side of second, but picked it
up just before Musial came flighting in bed chops Johnny
miz down to one hit and two trips.
Speaker 2 (58:54):
Gives him first base by virtue of the fielder's choice.
Speaker 1 (58:57):
As Eno Slaughter comes up, he has officially been at
that because he walked his first time. Masterson stepped off
the mound, off the rubber just as the played down
pire Charlie Berry call time.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
The outfield is deep to the right.
Speaker 1 (59:11):
Boudreau is playing just twelve or fifteen feet in the
left of second base, swinging and.
Speaker 2 (59:16):
A misstrike one.
Speaker 1 (59:19):
You may recall last year in the All Star Game
at Wrigley Field that one of the great plays of
the contest was a position play by Lou Boudreau.
Speaker 2 (59:27):
At the expense of slaughter.
Speaker 1 (59:29):
Left handed Johnny Schmidt's of the Cubs is warming up
of the National leaguers.
Speaker 2 (59:34):
A curve ball outside one and one.
Speaker 1 (59:38):
It was indicated to me prior to the game by
Eddie Dyer that Schmidts might be the second starter, the
second pitcher, but he at that time wasn't certain. Masterson
throws one a fast ball way outside, and the counters
two and one. The score National League goll Stars two,
American League All Stars one. But it's in the early
(59:58):
stages of the game that my go at least nine innings.
The weather looks good, little prospected rain. Here's the pitch.
There's a ground ball that goes slowly down the third
base line, and it is going to be an infield hit.
Kelner had to let the ball roll. It rolls ninety
feet right next to the bag. Myz went the second
(01:00:19):
and was long since there, and Slaughter raced over first
base down the right field line with a lazy little
infield roller. Runners on first and second, and that is
hit number five off the delivery of Waller Masterson. Kelner
had no alternative because he never could hope to catch
(01:00:40):
Slaughter at first. Dobson runs back out of the bullpen
as path Goo steps in. He grounded into a force
out his last time. He's a right hander. Inside ball
one last time at Bath with Slaughter on second base,
Path goes forced Mize at third, Miz on second base
(01:01:01):
rather and Slaughter on first. Here's the pitch outside and
it's two to nothing. Rashi continues to warm up. Jobson
did not go out there for the purpose of replacing him.
He had made a trip to the dugoff and took
a Turkey's tiw back out, which is a very useful
implement on a day like this. Schmidt's a left hander,
(01:01:22):
still warming up with the National leaguers. Masterson throws there's
a ground ball that goes to Gordon, Gordon clips to Boudreaux,
and the fourth on slaughter winds up the inning. That
one went four to six and in the third inning,
no runs two more. National League gets, no errors, two
runners left. The score is National League All Stars, two
(01:01:43):
American League Golf Stars one.
Speaker 2 (01:01:47):
During his career with the Washington Senators, Walter.
Speaker 1 (01:01:50):
Johnson pitched seven opening day shutouts, a record no other
pitcher has ever come close to mashing unequal performance also
explains the world wide popularity of today's Gellette Blue Blade.
Speaker 2 (01:02:03):
No other blade on Earth is an easy shaving or
long lasting.
Speaker 1 (01:02:07):
Now, Folks, for extra convenience and no extra cost, buy
Gellette Blue Blades in the handy Gellette dispenser. This puts
twenty blades forty shaving edges right at your fingertips. There's
an unwrapped blade for any Gellett razor. These blades reach
you factory sharp and stay that way until use. You
pay only ninety eight cents the regular price of twenty blades.
(01:02:31):
Look sharp, seal sharp, be sharp. Use Gellette Blue Blades
with the sharpest edges ever honed. The statistician in the
press box has completed his checking and has found that
Hoot Evers is the first American League All Star ever
to hit.
Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
A home run his first time up.
Speaker 1 (01:02:53):
It was done previously by Max West of the National
League All Star. Evers became the first American leaguer to
hit a home run his first time up in his
first All Star Game, but Max West did it on
the National League side. Going into the last half of
(01:03:14):
the third innings with the National Leaguers leading two to one,
Mickey Vernon will bat for his teammate Walter Masterson. Nicky
is a left handed batter and the first pitch by
Brancer is right over for a call strike.
Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
Vernon has a.
Speaker 1 (01:03:30):
Batting average for the season of two to sixty. This
is his second All Star game outside one in one.
Vernon has two previous at bats in All Star competition
without a hits. Brancer starts his wind up rose and
(01:03:55):
that's a half swing, but Mickey checked it and took
one low two and one. Musil's two run homer accounts
for both National League runs and eavers home run for
the low and American League talent. There's a file ball
off to the left. The count now is even up
to and two meantime, Johnny Schmidt's Chicago comes south paus
(01:04:18):
bearing down in a warm up capacity for the National Leaguers.
This will doubtless be Ralph Branca's last inning on the mounds,
and Vic Rashie will replace Walder Masterson. Come the start
of the four, Vernon waits outside three and two and
the count has been run out again. Habits may be
(01:04:43):
the new catcher because Yogi Berra just took over from
Bertie and took Rashi's last few pitches. There's ball four.
Mickey Vernons gets a board the baseline, balls to Mickey
Futzim on first base in lieu of his teammate Water Masterson,
and Pat Mullen of Detroit comes into the batter's box.
(01:05:07):
Pat struck out as the leadoff batter for the American League.
Tommy Henry comes out into the ondeck circles. The American
Leaguers have a tying run on first base. In the
last half of the third inning, Third Basement Path go
in close hive ball one. The National Leaguers are.
Speaker 2 (01:05:35):
Probably not certain of the tactics that will be used.
Speaker 1 (01:05:37):
By Bucky Harris, but third basement Path Goo is playing
close in the event of a bunch.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
There some stretch.
Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
Ball two outside. They look that time as though Mullen
was just about to swing on it. Two and Nothing's
a ball game, A two to one game. Last year,
the American Leaguers won a close one, a game in
(01:06:07):
which Johnny mayet omer. All three runs today have been
the result of round trippers. All three fastball high, and
Branca says, new ball please. Charlie Berry is quick to reply,
and he gives Walker Cooper a new one. Sometimes there's
a little roughness on a ball that a pitcher doesn't like,
or a smooth spot, or maybe it's strictly psychological. He
(01:06:30):
just gets it into his mind that it's the baseball
and not a temporary lack of control. Who's troubling him,
and umpires are nearly always willing to oblige in all
cases they were stalling seems to be a factor. Charlie
Dressing is hollering over the first base where Mickey Vernon
(01:06:51):
is ready to go to pitch ball. Four consecutive bases
on balls to pinch hitter Mickey Vernon and lead off
that are Pat Mullen. That is the third base on
ball given up by Ralph Branca. Runners on first and second,
(01:07:14):
Tommy Henry Cupp, and now from the position of the
National League infield. They believe that the stage is about
to be set for a sacrifice because Mies and Pat
Gore are close with Henry Cupp. Henry bluffs the bunch
and there's a throw at a second base.
Speaker 2 (01:07:31):
It bounds away from Peewee Reeve.
Speaker 1 (01:07:34):
There's no advance on the part of either base runner,
and Peewee is looking at a finger on his right
hand as though it get at it just a little,
just thumb, but it's trivial. He just looked at him,
clicked it and.
Speaker 2 (01:07:46):
Went back to his position. Franca has his back turned
to the batter and seems to be working with his glove.
He is soaking wet.
Speaker 1 (01:08:00):
It's a muggy day, excessively warm. Taskell is sneaking in
Troid to play a little inside ball. Two two and nothing.
Johnny Sayine is warming up again. A moment ago, it
was Johnny Schmidt's the soft faw. But either Leo Jirocher
has changed his mind or he believes say is going
(01:08:24):
to be a better fireman. He probably has earmarks saying
for a relief role. Strike call the fastball over the
inside corner. This is the first inning in which Franca
has found himself in anything approaching serious trouble. He's pitching
behind a two to one lead, and his previous only
(01:08:48):
bad pitch was a home run ball.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
By Evers.
Speaker 1 (01:08:55):
Strength calls that caught the outside corner, and the cot
is two and two balls, two strikes. His first time off,
Tommy Henrick went down on strikes. He protested, so did
lou Boudreaux, but the decision's good. Here comes ball three.
(01:09:22):
He started as Wing checked it just in time, and
the pitch broke into the dirt. And now the payoff
pitch comes up with Mickey Vernon on second base, Pat
Mullen on.
Speaker 2 (01:09:31):
First day, both of them fast on the basis.
Speaker 1 (01:09:38):
Chuck Dressen hollers something at Mickey Vernon red cord and
is coaching Pat Mullen. Here's a big one, Drake, A
throw a third base is not in time and it's
a double feel. Henrick swung myths struck out to become
Brank a third strike out victim. But when the throw
(01:10:00):
from Walker Cooper to third base with a poor throw
and pull Taft go over into foul territory, Mickey Vernon
was able to fly it in safely with a stolen base,
and his scored a double Steel double sield.
Speaker 2 (01:10:16):
Two stolen bases.
Speaker 1 (01:10:17):
Simultaneously gives the American leaguer as an opportunity to go
ahead in the event of a good solid bay hip.
On the other hand, preject row there would have made
a double play. Lou Boudreau up, he grounded out to
shortstop Pee Wee reeve for last time, the possibility of
(01:10:38):
his double play now is remote. There's a file tip
that one bounded right off Charlie Berry's chest protector and
continued on back to the screen, and it came to
rest just as the leastest commissioner Chandler, where the bat
boy attired as a Saint Louis Brown picked it up.
The mascots are wearing the uniforms to the two Saint
Louis clubs. Hoodreaux has the season's average three fifty five
(01:11:03):
file ball that hit one of the uprights, one of
the girders and came right down to the foot of
Red Cardon.
Speaker 2 (01:11:12):
He pretended to be a little.
Speaker 1 (01:11:13):
More surprised than probably with the case. The infield is
not playing in to cut the runoff with the exception
of third baseman pathco The others are playing fairly deep
high one ball, two strikes. Walker Cooper must be given
(01:11:37):
an orchard because he is playing in the All Star
Game at the wish of the fans.
Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
With a very sore knee. He is not at his
physical best.
Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
Fair goes a drive to right field that will mean
a run. Slaughter makes the catch, and here comes the
tying run of the plight, and a throw is not
in time.
Speaker 2 (01:11:56):
It was thrown from deep right field.
Speaker 1 (01:11:58):
The other runner at mullin Hell's second base had it
is to two as Boudreau flies deep enough to Slaughter
in right field to allow Mickey Erner to come home.
Not even a throwing arm like that of Eno Slaughter
was powerful enough to gun the ball in from his position,
which was about three hundred and.
Speaker 2 (01:12:17):
Thirty five feet hot in right field.
Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
That's the third run driven in for Lou Boudral, and
he has been in five All Star Games.
Speaker 2 (01:12:29):
Joe Gordon uugh he teams with Lou to defend Cleveland's.
Speaker 1 (01:12:34):
Middle base, the keystone back and they're one of the
great combinations of all time. Gordon, his first time up,
flied to left a fastball inside ball one Maulanon second base,
hopeful of scoring, Johnny Say still bearing down for the
National leaguers, and the Vetti's.
Speaker 2 (01:12:51):
Needed rank of pitches and throws the curve high to
a nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:13:04):
Food Evers in the on deck circle, one of two
All Stars ever to hit home runs in their first
All Star time at Battle. There's a ground ball down
the third base line fall. It was taken by Pasco
just outside the bag, and beans Ridden called it fall.
(01:13:25):
It was obvious after it was two thirds of the
way down the line and it would be. The All
Star Game has produced some magnificent thrills. The greatest individual
day was Williams in nineteen forty six when he walked
single twice, homeward twice, one home run off Ripsule's balloon ball.
The pitch Bob all Gordon was trying to draw away
(01:13:48):
from one, the ball struck his bad accidentally and the
contage two and two. Sometimes base hits results from just
such a ducking away maneuver is back, and the baseball
players like to call him. He use me singles or doubles.
They rate them the cheapest hits in baseball, but they
have upset the Apple card in many a game. Mullin
(01:14:11):
is standing just a few feet off second, taking not
a long lead. Here comes file Keep, just out of
the reach of Walker.
Speaker 2 (01:14:18):
Cooper.
Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
Walker has broken a couple of fingers in his major
league career, but Tommy Henry's little finger is just about
as bad looking as any of them. And that happened
in a softball game. He and Ken Keltner were comparing
hands today.
Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
Two to the counts inside three and two, three ball,
two strikes.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
The score is tied to two, and this run scored
by Mickey Vernon after a double steal, and the fly
ball was first not a home run. There's a ground
fall right by Charlie Dressing, one of the fans out
in left field, very nearly losing himself apart trying to
come after it. The game is bogged down for just
(01:15:14):
an instant. It has been a pitcher's duel more than
anything else see American Leaguers. There's just one Hip two
runs and one Hipp Branca pitchers foul Kipps, and that
one bounds off to the left. Gordon is resisting that
strikeout attempt on the part of Branca. Branca has three
(01:15:37):
strikeouts so far. The outfield is just the shade to
the left. There's plenty of outfield here at Sportsman Park
Saint Louis, especially in center and left.
Speaker 2 (01:15:53):
The pitch foul ball off to the left that hit
the glove.
Speaker 1 (01:16:00):
Of one of the American leaguers. Gordon has been in
the batter's box a long time. Branc Is pitching, of course,
hasn't approached that of Carl Hubbell when in nineteen thirty
four he fanned Ruth Garrig faux Simmonson Cronin. That's what's
the most memorable single pitching performance of all time. There's
(01:16:22):
a foul ball out again. Gordon looks up in grins.
He's delighting the fans, who's case down those souvenir baseball.
The count is still three and two. There are two
men out in the last half of the third inning.
In the nineteen forty eight Major League Golf Star Baseball game,
(01:16:42):
which has played for the benefit of the player's pension funds,
is a two to two tie. Franca is rubbing the
palm of his right hand hard against his jersey and
trowsers trying to dry it, and he's having some difficulty.
(01:17:05):
Pat mullen is taking a longer lead off second base.
The pitch, there's a ground ball.
Speaker 2 (01:17:11):
This one goes to pee wee.
Speaker 1 (01:17:12):
Reese throws across the diamond, demize and Gordon is out
six to three Reefe Demize. One run, no hips, no errors,
two bases on balls, two stolen bases, and one runner left.
At the end of three innings of play. The American
League two runs, one hits, two runners left. The National
(01:17:35):
League two runs, five hits, four runners left. Now we
pause for station identification. This is the world's largest network,
the mutual broadcasting system we have. The broadcast crew are
(01:18:06):
deeply indebted to the great hospitality of Sid Keener, the
veterans sports editor of the Saint Louis Star Times, for
the excellence of his cooperation and the thoroughness of his
assignment of facilities for both the AM broadcast and the
television coverage of this event. And incidentally, since the last
(01:18:26):
time you and I were here, Mel Allen for a game,
suck as this sportsman's park has had its facelifted and
has been rebuilt to the point where now it takes
its place among the finest baseball parks in the land.
Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
Don't you agree? I'm with you?
Speaker 1 (01:18:41):
One hundred percent there, Jim and the people here in
Saint Louis, both the Cardinal and Brown representatives do all
we can for the visiting fireman is deeply appreciated.
Speaker 2 (01:18:52):
We're going to have some changes in the American League roster.
Speaker 1 (01:18:57):
Vic Rashie is now doing the thing for the American leaguers,
and Bertie Tebbetts has gone in to do the catching.
The first man up will be Walker Cooper of the
New York Giants. Rashi's record is ten and three. He's
a right hander and his first pitch is a curve ball.
(01:19:18):
It breaks inside to a right hand batter. Rashi is
from Canisis, New York, one hundred and ninety pounds, six
feet one, twenty eight years old, a big husky right hander,
low outside ball two two and nothing. Cooper his first
time up, forced Pat Goo for the ground ball to
(01:19:40):
third baseman Ken Keltner the new Battery.
Speaker 2 (01:19:43):
Rashy of New York, Tebbitts of Boston. Here it comes.
Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
There's a foul tip right into Bertie's glove in the
cottage two and one. Tebbitts is a native of Nashew
in New Hampshire and the graduate of Providence College. Eddie
Dyer continues to coach third base. His son was working
out by the way just before the ballgame, Eddie Jr.
Speaker 2 (01:20:05):
Swinging a mess. Cooper went all the way down on
the batter's box that he took a savage cut a
to Rashi fastball to two for the while.
Speaker 1 (01:20:15):
At least this will be Rashie's ball game since it's
high score. There's a ground ball that goes to Keltner.
He takes it down on a big hop, guns it
across him a Quinn for the out. Walker Cooper goes
out Keltner to the Quinn third to first. Tee Wee
Reese is waiting the bath. His first time up, he
(01:20:36):
struck out. This is his third All Star game. Breeze
is one of the most likable characters in baseball. He's
from Louisville, Kentucky. He was born in Ekron, Kentucky. Strike call.
That was a fastball right down the middle, one man
(01:20:59):
out on the top of fourth. The National and American
leaguers tied to two. Crash he delivers. There's a ground
Paula Costa Keilder and he takes a vicious grounder throws
the first for the out.
Speaker 2 (01:21:11):
McQuinn came up with a nice stop on a low
throw that was one of the harder hit balls of
the game.
Speaker 1 (01:21:18):
But Reece goes out, count nears a McQuinn. Two men
are out and we now have a pinch hitter, Frank
Gustine of Pittsburgh. He has a batting average of three
oh three for the year. He's from Hoopstown, Illinois originally,
but is of Pittsburgh now. Rashy's first pitch is low
(01:21:42):
and away ball one. This is Gustine's third All Star Game.
He hasn't had a hit in three times at bats,
but he has a season's average of three to three.
Crashy winds up low ball two, two and Nothingstine is
(01:22:10):
one of the reasons why the Pittsburgh Pirates will continue
to be a Pennant contender this year.
Speaker 2 (01:22:16):
The pitch strike called curveball two and one.
Speaker 1 (01:22:21):
Currently, Pittsburgh is in second place, five and a half
games back of the Boston Braves. The outfield plays Gustine
deep and slightly to the left the infield straight away.
He uses an open stance swing on the mess two
and two. Rashy is a strong, powerful right hander with
(01:22:44):
a good fastball, good curve and a very conscientious workman.
Justine gets set to the two to two pitch, strike
three down in the dirt tab. It throw us to
first base and McQuinn gets the put out on the play.
It's a strikeout, but he had to be thrown out
two to three tevitch to McQuinn. So Rashi's first inning
(01:23:09):
is a one two three affair. At the end of
three and a half innings, the score is National League
All Stars two, American League All Stars two. In baseball slang,
as you know, a fast pitch that grazes the batter
s whiskers is commonly called a gellette. Do you know, however,
(01:23:30):
that fast acting Gellette shaving creams now contain K thirty four,
an amazing facial adisseptic.
Speaker 2 (01:23:37):
K thirty four does what no amount of scrubbing with
ordinary soap and water can do.
Speaker 1 (01:23:43):
It destroys from eighty five to ninety nine percent of
dangerous bacteria on and beneath outer layers of the skin.
What's more, the bacteria account stays down. The protection lasts
from one day's shave until the next.
Speaker 2 (01:23:58):
This means that simply by oftening your.
Speaker 1 (01:24:00):
Whiskers with Gillette brushless or Gillette lather, and enjoying a smooth,
refreshing shave, you end up with the cleanest face a
man can have, not just clean looking and clean feeling,
but surgically clean. Enjoy this valuable protection. Ask for Gillette
Brushless or Gellette Lather a quarter. The new pitcher for
(01:24:25):
the National Leaguers is going to be left handed Johnny
Schmidt's of the Chicago Cubs, and his record is eight
and nine. He will face Hoot Evers, who homered his
first time up strike call hit a two two ball game.
(01:24:46):
And just as it is Rashies to win or lose
for the while, at least, so it is Johnny Schmidt's.
The pitch inside one on one. Verne Stephens, who ranked
behind Lou Boudreau in the balloting for American League shortstop,
is warming up out of the bull ends, and Bobby
(01:25:08):
dor his second base teammate, is warming up with him.
There goes a high fly ball towards left center field,
Ashburn coming in, Reese going back. Reese waves everybody away
and he got it at the last instant. But there
were a few oohs and ohs before it became certain
that he would make the catch. Reese went out about
(01:25:32):
seventy five feet from his normal deep short stopposition, so
Eavers popped to six, one out Ken kelton rough his
first time off. Keltoner walked. He has one of three
bases on balls that were issued by starting to Fischer
Ralph Franca, a right hander. Low outside ball, one past ball.
Speaker 2 (01:26:00):
When it's on deck.
Speaker 1 (01:26:06):
Here comes curveball caught the inside corner, and the count
is one and one, two to the score. As the
crowd has settled down to a pitcher's duel, waiting for
the break that will break it wide open, perhaps for.
Speaker 2 (01:26:21):
One team strike two fastball that just breathed over the
inside corner. Keltner wasn't interested in going after it. One
and two. This is the last half of the fourth inning.
Here's the wind up Schmidt's pitches.
Speaker 1 (01:26:41):
There's a ground ball that goes down the third base
line label, perhaps for extra bases. Musial feels it quickly.
Keltner rounds and has to hold on with a single.
A swell row from Musial to Shamee games all that
hits to one base.
Speaker 2 (01:27:03):
That's the second American League hit.
Speaker 1 (01:27:09):
And with any less quick fielding on the park of Stanley,
New Zealand, would have been an easy double. George mcquinnap
he flied to center. That's the fourth All Star Game
hit for Keltner, playing in his seventh mquinn is a
left hander. Schmid steps back off the rubber and that's
the signal for Kelner to go back at first. That
(01:27:29):
gives Ken one hit in one trip. He walked his
first time up. It's a two to two game. In
the fourth inning, fastball, low ball one. The game is
nearing the halfway mark, at which time there will be
the customary change vumpires one ball, no strikes outside ball two.
(01:27:59):
That was a hook wide, breaking curve ball. The second
base combination Shane Deans and Reese of the Cardinals and
the Dodgers is playing in a little hopeful of a
double play. Third basement Pasco is in fairly close with
a left handed rup. Mquinn waits for the pitch. There's
(01:28:19):
a drive that goes in a cider field for a
base hit. Coltner goes to second and holds out. Ashburn's
throw is cut off by Reeese from the American Leaguers.
Third hit by George McQuinn foots runners on first and
seconds with Bertie Tebitts coming up. That was mcquinn's second
(01:28:39):
hit in an All Star game, and this is his
third All Star contest. So again the American leaguers have
the tie breaking run on second base. Bertie Tebitts's batting
average is two eighty six and this is his second
All Star game. In his last Off Star game, he
(01:29:01):
wanted that four times no hits. George uses an open stance,
slightly bends his knees, and looks at one inside for
ball one. Keltner on second, McQuinn on first. Smith is
(01:29:22):
having less luck in his first inning than branc att
It in his. The game is tied to two. Here
comes inside ball two, two and nothing. Kelner goes back
and tags up at second in routine fashioned Red Shandeans
is playing fairly deep at second base, and Johnny Saying
(01:29:44):
of the Boston Braves is wounding.
Speaker 2 (01:29:45):
Up again the stretch.
Speaker 1 (01:29:53):
Here comes inside ray nothing. Smith's has been pitching tightly.
The Bernie Tabbitts too close to the fifth door and
Stevens have both finished their warm ups and have come
back to the dugout.
Speaker 2 (01:30:11):
Three and nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:30:13):
David is in a position not waiting for one of
the good ones that Johnny Schmidt must throw to avoid
walking in.
Speaker 2 (01:30:19):
Here it is way outside. The bases are loaded.
Speaker 1 (01:30:24):
That's the fourth base on balls given the American leaguers,
and in a sense that has been partially the undoing
of the National League because it has cost them their initials.
Two to nothing and then two to one lead the
store a side two two. The bases are filled, and
Dick Rashie is the batter. Rashy is very workmanlike. He
(01:30:52):
gives you the impression of quiet, modest concert and deficiency
when he steps into the batter's box. See we reach
just had a word with Jani schmidts their opponents.
Speaker 2 (01:31:02):
Every other day of the year, but not today.
Speaker 1 (01:31:03):
When the National League gets together in an attempt to
upset the American League, Apple Cards rash He swings and
misses the count one strike as pitchers goal. He is
rated a fair hitter. He stands straight away, fairly close.
Speaker 2 (01:31:23):
To the plate swinging a miss.
Speaker 1 (01:31:30):
Schmidt's is seating him that jug handled curveball on successive pitches,
and the count has two strikes in a two to
two ball game. The American Leaguers have Freeman on with
one out outside a fastball thrown loan outside the count.
Speaker 2 (01:31:56):
One and two.
Speaker 1 (01:32:06):
Here's the wind up by Schmidt's there's a foul ball
the left field end of the sands a good clean
line drive, but it goes for just a long.
Speaker 2 (01:32:16):
Strike, about as well hit as any ball has men
one ball, two strikes the count.
Speaker 1 (01:32:33):
Johnny Sayin continues to bear down in his warm up capacity.
Here it comes high too, and two. The National Leaguer
scored both their runs in the first inning on Richie
Ashburn's infield hit and Stanley Museieald's home run, New zild's
first All Star Game home run that went atop the
right center field stands deeper than the three hundred and
(01:32:55):
fifty four foot mark had about the three hundred and
sixty foot mark.
Speaker 2 (01:33:00):
But now it's a two to two games. There's a
drive to left field for a base hip.
Speaker 1 (01:33:06):
It's three to two American League and here comes another
run to the plate. The throw is not in time.
It's four to two with runners on first and third.
As Thrashy up, that's the dope and drives in two runs. Rashy,
after swinging and missing two curveballs, found a pitch to
(01:33:28):
his liking single sharply to left field, scoring Keltner and.
Speaker 2 (01:33:31):
McQuinn and sending Kevits to third. Pat Mullen is being
lifted for Joe Demaggio.
Speaker 1 (01:33:46):
Eddie Dyer is coming out, and that may be the
signal for the replacement of Johnny Schmidt's with Johnny sayin
right hander of the Boston Braves.
Speaker 2 (01:34:01):
There's the announcement, and that is the.
Speaker 1 (01:34:03):
Signal for a fresh burst of applause. And Johnny Saine
is being called in for the National Leaguers. After hitting
a line drive Paul and then taking another ball, Rashi
straightened off that foul ball that he had hit previously
and hit a sharp line drive right over the head
(01:34:23):
of third basement Andy Pasco. And now there's a neat
little mound of National leaguers out on the mound. Red
Shane East and Johnny Mize are the only two who
are not currently sharing in it. Greece comes strolling down
off the edge, and John Sayanne is coming in from
the bull end.
Speaker 2 (01:34:41):
Saye as an eleven.
Speaker 1 (01:34:43):
And six record for the Boston Braves, and this is
all happening in the last half of the fourth inning.
Saine has been in one previous All Star Game, and
he was the losing pitcher you'll call last year. In
one inning, he allowed one earned run, two hits, struck
(01:35:06):
out one, but he was charged with a defeat. This
is the ninth active appearance in an All Star Game
uniform for Joe Demaggio. He was chosen ten times, but
did not appear one time. This, of course, is his
tenth season in baseball. He has been chosen every time.
(01:35:34):
Johnnie Schmidt has fared the worst of all the pitchers
in the contest so far, because there's just one man
out and the last four have reached.
Speaker 2 (01:35:44):
He got Hootivers on a pop up.
Speaker 1 (01:35:46):
He quieted that home run bad at his but then
Keltner banged a single to left field.
Speaker 2 (01:35:51):
McQuinn followed with a single through the middle.
Speaker 1 (01:35:53):
Berdie Tevits got a base on balls, and then Vick
Rashie hit a two and two pitch into left field
to score Keltner from third base, mc quinns from second base,
and send Bernie Tebbitts all.
Speaker 2 (01:36:05):
The way around to third.
Speaker 1 (01:36:07):
This is the kind of a day, incidentally, won a
pitcher needs no jacket at first base. What he really
would like, in all probability is a nice air cooling
system that could be installed in his uniform to cool
him down as he runs around. Joe Demaggio get sens.
The Big Fellow has a three h two batting average
(01:36:29):
for the season. So far, he has a two to
nineteen All Star Game average, seven hits and one home run.
He's driven in two runs. Previously, He's suffering from sore
heels and sore knees, so could not see a two
active service. Johnny Say broke his position on the mound,
(01:36:54):
and Walker Cooper is going out to have a chat
with him, even though he is not at his physical peak.
Joe Demagio is a frightening picture for almost any picture
to come.
Speaker 2 (01:37:09):
Him play.
Speaker 1 (01:37:11):
Far and away one of the great baseball players of
all time, and he comes from a distinguished San Francisco.
Speaker 2 (01:37:19):
Baseball playing family.
Speaker 1 (01:37:22):
He stands straight away erect in the box, waits for
Saint's pitch, and there's a drive to left field, tagging
up a third basis, tempet Giuzio makes the play.
Speaker 2 (01:37:31):
And run number five scores.
Speaker 1 (01:37:34):
It was a line drive with hit the left field,
so the Big Fellow was driven in his third All
Star run and the American leaguers have taken a five
to two lead, two men out, Tommy Henricop. All three
(01:37:55):
of those runs were charged to Johnny Schmidtz. In one
third of an inning, Hendrick has struck out twice. DiMAGE
has applauded as he goes back to the dugout and.
Speaker 2 (01:38:03):
Now he can head for the showers. There's a drive
down the right field line that is going to be
close to their territory. Bob all Ino.
Speaker 1 (01:38:14):
Slaughter ran into one of the grounds crewmen who didn't
get out of the way quickly enough, and as Slaughter
put his arms around him, I think the gentleman served
as sort of a bumper for him. I'm certain that
he was considerably softer than that concrete wall. One strike,
(01:38:36):
Rashie was well round second base on his way to third.
The ball was fouled by about three feet. Junior Stevens
is in the on deck circle the bat for lou Boudrol.
Hendrick is a left hander, and he hit the high
pop up. Peewe Reese is calling for it out on
the skin of the enfield of the left a second
(01:38:58):
he takes it and that ends the inning. And it
was a big inning too. As Henrik popped up to
see Wee Reese to end it. The American Leaguers came
up with three runs in that frame on only three hits.
Speaker 2 (01:39:12):
There were no errors, one based on ball the fourth,
and there was just the one runner left.
Speaker 1 (01:39:20):
So at the end of four innings to play, the
American Leaguers have five runs, four hits.
Speaker 2 (01:39:26):
No errors, three runners left.
Speaker 1 (01:39:29):
The National Leaguers have two runs, five hits, no errors,
and four runners left. James and the American League lineup
at the moment had shortstop Junior Stevens of the Boston
Red Sox in place of Lou Boudreaux, Bobby dorr of
the Boston Red Sox in place of Joe Gordon, and
(01:39:52):
there will have to be a replacement in right field
Al Zilla of the Saint Louis Browns in place of
Pat Mullen all the Detroit Tigers. Those three replacements swell
to a total of five the American League replacements of
the past inning. The American League batting order now the
(01:40:14):
Zorrilla right field, Henrik left field, Stevens shortstop door second base,
Everrs in center, Keltner at third, McQuinn still at first,
Kebots catching, and Vic Rashie of the Yankees doing the pitching.
Speaker 2 (01:40:41):
The public addresses.
Speaker 1 (01:40:42):
Am announcer is axplaining the lands here at Cotman's Park
with a number of changes and not in right field.
Speaker 2 (01:40:49):
Four National leaguers are beginning.
Speaker 1 (01:40:51):
To warmout, not pitchers. Bob Elliott is one of them,
and they will doubt let's go to other positions. Phil Maypee,
a catcher, is one of them. But meanwhile Richie Ashburn,
with one hit and two trips, leads off in the fifth.
Rashi's first pitch is right over the plate for the
call strike turdball. Crashy pickers strike two a call turnball.
(01:41:24):
The American League leads five to two at the end
of four innings to play. Clive McCullough is another of
the National leaguers warming up. Buddy Kerr of the Giants
is the other, the wind up high one ball who
strikes the count. Eddie Dyer, still coaching at third base
(01:41:48):
in Melott doing the coaching at first base for the
National leaguers. The outfield is playing Ashburn a little to
the left. There's a ground ball that.
Speaker 2 (01:41:56):
Goes to center field for a base hip it went
Junior steven.
Speaker 1 (01:42:00):
Says he streaked over to try to knock it down
and Ashburn gets his second hit. That is the sixth
hit for the National Leaguers, a single to center by
Little Richie Ashburn of the Philadelphia Phills, one of the
rookie sensations of the year. Shane Each the second baseman up.
(01:42:21):
He has grounded the first and fouled the first. A
left hander. There's a ground ball that goes foul down
the right field line, and Buddy Kerr of the Giants
turns around and feels that one flips it back to
first base on fire Bill Stewart one strike to count.
(01:42:46):
The pitch inside the fastball that made Shane DEA's lean
away from it. Dam Musil has driven in both National
League runs with a two run homer. He and Ashbourn
have two hits each. Shane East is looking for his
first one curve ball outside rash He's seem to lose
control of that slow one and the count is two
(01:43:07):
and one. No American leaguer has a total of two
hits a yet, as a matter of fact, the American
league run total exceeds its hip total. Five runs, four hips.
The pitch there goes a high fly ball toward right
(01:43:28):
center field. Zorrilla comes in for it. And he makes
the catch with Evers looking on right fielder.
Speaker 2 (01:43:36):
Al Gorilla has taken Shane East.
Speaker 1 (01:43:39):
Fly ball, and here's Sam Musial again, and the National
League fans are hopeful that he will repeat. Hal Newhauser
ran out to the bullpen in left field for the
American leaguers, but probably to take a message. Here's a
(01:44:00):
pitch outside ball one. Musiald has a two run home
run in a single descenter two out of two. Bob
Lemon of Cleveland is warming up for the American leaguers.
Speaker 2 (01:44:15):
Rash He takes a stretch. There goes a long high
fly ball to right field.
Speaker 1 (01:44:20):
Serilla is running over and it is a file ball
into the stands. That would not have been a home run.
Speaker 2 (01:44:32):
Because the screen stretches all the way over.
Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
Had it been in fair territory, it would have been
as many bases as Museal could have made. The American
League still clings to its five to two league on
the basis of that free run rally in the fourth inning,
in which Vic Rashie swung the big bat to count
one and one on Muzeal one out, one on strike call,
(01:45:00):
Rashi slow curagin one ball, two strikes account Johnny Shirley
is warming up. Bob lemon of no hit, no run Fame.
Musial crotches, swings and messes strike three ball the stranger
(01:45:24):
through a slow curved ball. It frokes right down in
the dirt. That is the third National League strikeout, but
the first time Musial's big bat has been silence. Johnny
minds up. Johnny hit a home run in last year's game.
He has one hit and two trips. And this he
singled through the middle in the first inning and in
(01:45:44):
the third inning. His ruler to Joe Gordon Force Museum.
He's a big left handed. The outfield moves.
Speaker 2 (01:45:51):
Deep outside ball one.
Speaker 1 (01:45:56):
Ashburn in two leadoff capacities, reach base safely each time
with hits. The National Leaguers are trying to overcome that
free run deficit. The pitch, there's a ground ball that
goes to body door, Dora makes the play. The first
basemen Twins takes it, and that's all for the National Leaguers.
(01:46:19):
In the fifth inning, as Mines goes out second to first,
no runs, one hits, no errors, one runner left, and
at the end of four and a half innings of play,
the score is American Leaguers five National Leaguers two, while
the fame of his immortal achievement grows with each passing year.
No one knows the pitcher who struck out the mighty
(01:46:41):
case thing. Just about everybody, on the other hand, can
name the razor that fans out tough whiskers with the greatest.
Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
Ease and dispatch.
Speaker 1 (01:46:49):
Yes, you're right, it's the improved Gellette super Speed razer
that changes blades instantly. This razor has a notched positioning
bar for use with a Gellette dispenser. Hook on a
blade and it drops in place. Presto, Twist the handle
and the razor closes to clean, loosen the holder, rinse
and shape.
Speaker 2 (01:47:09):
Convenient, you said it.
Speaker 1 (01:47:11):
What's more, you get shaves that are shaves, clean, smooth,
and oh soul refreshing. No, it doesn't take a locksmith
to make this razor work. Ask for the improved Gelett
Superspeed Racer with ten blade dispenser, A big dollar fifty
value for only a dollar. And now, for the fourth
(01:47:34):
time as an All Star Game colleague, it is a
privilege again to bring in Mel Allen, the popular broadcaster
of the New York Yankees, whose voice you have heard
many times on Jellet's All Star and World Series broadcasts.
Mel Hello there everybody once again, and before we get
into action him the last half of the fifth inning,
(01:47:55):
with a American LEU leading by a score of five
to two, we see the Whip Blackwell walking down to
the National League bullpen. We have two changes in the
National League defensive lineup. Bob Belliot has taken over at
third base of the Boston Braves.
Speaker 2 (01:48:09):
Buddy Curved the.
Speaker 1 (01:48:10):
New York Giants is at short Red Changeans still at second,
Johnny Mize at first, Stan Mugel Stillon left, Rick gi
Ashburn and center, Ino Slaughter and Wright, and back of
the plate, Phil Macy of the Boston Braves has replaced
Walker Cooper. So those are your lineup changes, plus the
umpire switch with Beans Reardon, who was umpiring at third base,
(01:48:33):
taking over back of the plate, and Charlie Berry the
American League, who was back of the plate taking over
at third. Where the switch between first and second bases
which we'll pick up in a moment. Junior Stevens, leading off,
takes a curve ball drow that outside corner for call strike.
Stevens went in to replace Loupa drawn shortstop hitting three hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:48:50):
On the season.
Speaker 1 (01:48:52):
Junior is the right hand hitter, knows this ballpark very well,
used to play with the Saint Louis Browns. Johnny seen
the right hand, throws a fastball swung on in, missed
strike two. This is Stephen's fourth appearance in an All
Star and Classic. He's had four out of ten for
a batting average of four hundred. Joe Paparella is umpiring
your first base now, and Bill skirted second as they
(01:49:14):
switch to so it's the National League on fire. Back
to the plate right now. Johnny Sain's two strike pitch
to Stevens. The curve ball's over there for call strike three.
A beautiful hook that sailed right over that outside corner,
just below the shoulders. So Verne Stephens strikes out as
we come into the last half of the fifth name
of the American League leading five to two. That's the
(01:49:37):
first strike out recorded by Johnny Sayin and the fourth
recorded by National League pitchers. As starter Ralph Franco with
three of the American leaguers, Bobby Door right hand hit
her up, takes hive all one for Bobby Door replaced
Joe Gordon at second base for Bobby Door. This is
his sixth All Star game. He's had three hits and
fourteen times. It's bat in previous classics high off his
(01:50:00):
right shoulder. In comes the pitch curveballs outside ball two,
two balls, no strikes. The score the American League five,
the National League two. The outfield playing Bobby Door over
toward left. He's a pull hitter. He employs a wide
open stance. The infield shaded round towards third, and there
was a heat of thunder. I believe in comes the
pitch now to Bobby Door. He takes strike calls. That
(01:50:22):
was a fastball over that outside corner. Bout letter high.
It's a two to one count on Bobby Door. Johnny
Say the third pitcher employed by Leo durocher this afternoon,
saining in relief roll relieving. Johnny schmidz, here's the pitch.
It's in there for call strike two. Bobby started to swing,
held up. The pitch was in there anyway, sweeping curve.
(01:50:43):
Johnny Schmiz was scheduled to have worked the middle three innings,
the fourth, fifth, and sixth. He took over from Branca,
who had worked the first three innings, giving up two
runs and one hit, but Schmitz was knocked out of
there and the fourth inning and Sane came on to
put out the fire. Now the pitch is swung on
it miss beautiful curveball that Bobby Door swung at. Then
that's strike three and Johnny sin records his second successive strikeout,
(01:51:04):
and that's the fifth American leaguer to go down on
strikes today. Now coming up is Hootivers of the Detroit Tigers,
who had a home run on the second inning to
give the American League its first run. Popped out the
short his last time up the outfield, playing him to
pull infield, daded round toward third. Johnny Sain delivers over
the outside corner for a call strike and the big
(01:51:27):
Boston Brave right hander is showing some of the neatest
pitching the afternoon. Thus far, the American League out in
front five to two. Last half of the fifth inning,
Johnny Ready delivers pitch. It's just outside for a ball.
Hootivers started off right, it held up and played on fire.
Dean Dridden called at the ball and the count as
(01:51:48):
one and one, one ball, one strike, two outs and
nobody on last half fifth inning, five to two favor
of the American League. The right handed delivers. Here's a
fastball that's over that outside corner for call strike two.
Johnny Sain, who was charged with the defeat in the
nineteen forty seven All Star Game, coming on to do
some wonderful pitching thus far. Bob Ellied a third posts
(01:52:10):
that line halfway back, saying ready, here's the one two
pitch to Hootivers.
Speaker 2 (01:52:15):
Curve ball is int there.
Speaker 1 (01:52:16):
For a call strike three, and these strikes out the side.
Johnny Say strikes out the side in the last half
of the fifth inning for one of the highlights of
this fifteenth Annual All Star Game this afternoon. And at
(01:52:37):
the end of five innings of play, the score remains
the American League five, the National League two, the American League.
Five inning totals five runs, four hits, no eras, three
left on the National League two runs, six hits, no eras,
and five men left on base. Before we go into
the top half of the sixth inning, ladies and gentlemen,
we pause for station identification. This is the Mutual broadcasting system.
(01:53:01):
This is Mel Allen with Jim Britt and Franz Locke
speaking to you once again from Sportsman's Park in Saint Louis, Missouri,
sight of the fifteenth Annual Major League All Star Game.
The sun is shining brightly. We're ready to move into
the top half of the sixth inning with the American
Lea leading by a score of five to two. Celebrities
galore from among the Major League Baseball executives here as
(01:53:23):
we sweep around very rapidly, we can see mister fort
Frick and mister Will Harriet's the National American League presidents,
mister Bill Beck and Hank Greenberg at the Cleveland Engines,
Dan Topping and George Wise with the New York Yankees,
Joe Cronham the Boston Red Sox an How're ready for
the sixth inning? Ino Slaughter takes a pitch in there
for a call strike. Top half of the sixth Slaughter
(01:53:47):
walked and singled in his two previous appearances. Left hand
batter bit crashy right hander throws pitch bashball inside and
the count is one and one. Kenny Coulton is at third,
in on the grass and the event of a bunch,
Junior Stevens at short, Bobby Door second, George McQuinn firm
Henrick is in left Ebers in center zerrilla and right
in comes the pitch and it's right down the middle
of fastball for call strike two. Eddie Dyer coaching at
(01:54:09):
third base, Melott coaching at first Joe Coleman of the
Philadelphia Athletics, the right hand of warming up in the
bullpen with Yogi Barry catching him for the American League.
One ball, who strikes the count on slaughter they claim
to pull the right bick Rashy delivers slaughter, swingson, sends
a little dribber out of the mound.
Speaker 2 (01:54:25):
Rash.
Speaker 1 (01:54:25):
She comes in, feels the ball near the first base line,
throws over to McQuinn in time, and there's one away
for the National League in the first half of the
sixth sunning Slaughter, topping the pitch, saying little dribber, little
dribbler out toward the mound, which Rash she converted into
the put out by way of George McQuinn. And now
we have Bob Elliott stepping in to hit for the
first time the ball game, having replaced Andy Pasco at
(01:54:47):
third base. Remember the Boston Braves, the right hand hitter
won the Most Valuable Player award the National League in
nineteen forty seven. Elliott has been in three Star Games
with a batting average of two hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:55:02):
Right hand batter of the.
Speaker 1 (01:55:03):
Pitch, Curt ball the way outside for ball one, bob
that one out of five an All Star Game competition.
The score American League five the National League two. First
half the sixth inning outfield, paying him to pull around
toward left rash He delivers fastball. It's just off that
outside corner just listed for ball two. Bick Rashey came
(01:55:27):
on to do the pitching for the American League after
Walt Masterson and Turld the first three innings, walking one,
striking out one, giving up five hits and two runs.
Rashley struck out two thus far and has given up
one hit, has inition eighty passes. It was a year
ago that Frank Jay got credit for the American League victory.
In comes the pitch swung on line solidly into the
hole between third and shoring out in the left field
(01:55:48):
for the base hit. Henry comes up with the ball
and a high bounce throws on into second and Elliott
is on with the line single to left for the
seventh hit of the afternoon for the National League. Coming
up to bat now another member of the Boston Braves,
Phil Macy, who replaced Walker Cooper back of the plate.
Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
Macy a right hand batter.
Speaker 1 (01:56:10):
He's been in two previous All Star Games, hasn't hit
them two times at bat, big crash.
Speaker 2 (01:56:15):
He takes the stretch. One away.
Speaker 1 (01:56:17):
Elliot leads off first. Here's your pitch, curveball outside ball one.
We started the same moment ago as that Frank Shave
was credited for the American League victory last year, Remember
the New York Yankees, And at the moment Vic Grashy
is in position to be credited for the victory representing
the New York Yankees again this year. Simply a matter
of rotation of pitchers and the situation of a ball game.
(01:56:38):
Here's your delivery. Curveball is way outside. Berdie Tebbitts blocked
it beautifully to keep from being a wild pitch. And
the count now on Phil Macy, a right hand batter.
Two balls, no strikes, Hule Blackele. Now the Cincinnati Red
just throwing in the bullpen. Tommy Holmes of the Boston
Braves is warming up out there. We'll see action shortly.
(01:57:00):
Bob Elliot leads away from first base. One out, five
to two favor the American League. Sixth thing, there's the
pitch that's lined out in the center field for a
base hit taken on one hot by Hoot Evers holding
up at second as Elliot a Zebras fires that throw
into third, cut off by Stevens at short. And the
National League is beginning to stir here in the sixth
innings as they come up with their eighth hit of
the ball game.
Speaker 2 (01:57:19):
They've out hit the.
Speaker 1 (01:57:20):
American League now eight to four, but the American League
leads by a score of five to two, capitalizing on
wildness in the fourth inning on the part of Johnny
Schmidtz together with three solid base hits. Now Buddy Kerr
steps up batting in place of Peewee Reese, for whom
he sebstituted a short Buddy Kerr of the New York Giants,
(01:57:44):
another right hand hitter, Buddy Kerr's first appearance in an
All Star Game. You've got Bob Elliot on second, Phil
Macy on first, one out, sixth inning, five to two,
American League. An ominous clouds are looming back at center field.
Here's the pitch inside and high ball one. In addition
(01:58:07):
to Joe Coleman in the American League bullpen. He's got
further activity. Bob Lemon is beginning to throw as Big
Grashy is showing a sign of weakening. Two men on
went out sixth andning five to two. American League, the
National League threting. Buddy Curerr up there, right hand hitter
choked his bat about three inches out field a step
toward left. Your pitches right over that inside corner. There's
(01:58:27):
a throw down to the second base, but it's knocked
off by bit Grashy at the mound as Berdie Tepbitts
buff to throw down the ever throw it right back
to Rashy hard and Bob Eliot went scooting back into
second base as Bobby Dora had sneaked in behind him
for a potential pickoff. All right, we're ready. Here's your pitch.
Buddy Kerr swings and sense of dribbler down toward third.
Kenny Keltner comes in up with it, makes his plate
(01:58:49):
the first base to McQuinn in time for the out,
with Elliott going to third and Macy the second.
Speaker 2 (01:58:54):
So Kerr is out. Keltner to McQuinn on the slow
roll of the.
Speaker 1 (01:58:57):
Third schedule to hit is the pitcher Johnny Sayanne, but
certainly Leo Droscher will now send up a pinch hitter.
It's beginning to get very dark out here at Sportsman's Park,
Ladies and gentlemen. We can see rain way off in
the distance, and not too far off in the distance.
The wind is blowing those clowns in this direction over
(01:59:19):
the ballpark, and the winds beginning to blow around. Put
some weights on your papers, fellas, and we may have
rain here in any moment, at any moment. But of
course it's already a full ball game, gone five innings,
and we're going to have a pinch hitter or Johnny
say It's going to be ed Wakeness of the Chicago
(01:59:43):
Cubs making his first appearance in an All Star Game.
A left hand hitter, Eddie Waitkess coming up a left
hand batter with two men on runners on second and third.
Waitas boys in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Elliott on third, may see
on second and rain in the offing, rain, Rain, go away,
(02:00:06):
come back another day.
Speaker 2 (02:00:07):
Here's the pitch. Wakecas takes outside and hide ball one.
Speaker 1 (02:00:13):
So the American League is being disturbed by the National
League at the moment, though the American League leads five
to two, top of the sixth, and everybody's being disturbed
by the threat of rain. Now the pitch comes in
to wakeness. He takes outside ball two. The wind is
blowing blowing intowar it home plate, and it is definitely
raining about a half a mile from here. We can
(02:00:34):
see it, and it's moving this way. Let's hope it
holds away.
Speaker 2 (02:00:38):
Bick Crash.
Speaker 1 (02:00:39):
He looks in to get the sign from Berdie tubbitts
Elliot leads off third, may see off second, two out, sixth,
thunning five to two favor of the American League.
Speaker 2 (02:00:48):
Rash.
Speaker 1 (02:00:48):
He gets the sign pinch it or d wake us
up there at the plate, the left hand batter. Here's
the delivery and curveball inside for ball three. And the
wind is blowing hard and blowing those rain clouds this way,
and the fans are stirring in their seats and they're
beginning to move from the bleachers to shelter, and the
Sportsman's Park ground keepers are getting ready to roll that tarpaulin.
(02:01:13):
Big Crash the into the wind up the three nothing
pitch to waitness in there for a call strike and
what was a beautiful day up until this moment or
a couple of moments ago, is being turned into stormy
weather on the banks of the Mississippi. Three balls, one strike,
runners on second and third, two outs.
Speaker 2 (02:01:34):
Here's your pitch.
Speaker 1 (02:01:34):
Waitus takes straight to call a fastball that zips over
an outside corner above the knees. Now the pinch hitter
steps out of the batter's box, rubbed his hands together,
moves back.
Speaker 2 (02:01:45):
In a hitting position.
Speaker 1 (02:01:47):
Hell you on third, macy on second, two out, six
hundred five to two. American League. Here's the payoff pitch.
Eddie Wakeers swings and files it off the left of
the plant, out of play into the lower stands, and
the count holds at three and two. Richie Ashburn leadoff.
Man's on deck. Oh mister rain, mister Rain, please don't
(02:02:08):
come this way. Hold off, Hold off for at least
another hour or so. Now the payoff pitch, wait because
takes high ball four in the National League down unloaded.
That is the first base on balls given up by
Big Grashy and the second past issued by American League pitchers.
(02:02:30):
Masterson walk one in his three innings. You got Elliot
on third, Macye on second, Eddie Wait goes on first base,
two out, sixth and ing five to two, American League.
And here's Richie Ashburn, who's had two out of three
two singles, flying to left and his other appearance and
the pitch Ashburn takes strike call of fastball poured.
Speaker 2 (02:02:46):
Over there letter high.
Speaker 1 (02:02:49):
Big Grashy in a bit of a jam, goes to
the draws and bag gives a little touch activity in
both bullpens, Lemon and Coleman warming up in the American League,
both pen blackwol for the National League. Base loaded rain
is on its way. The pitch high outside, almost a
wild pitch. Bertie Tabots had to go far off to
his left reach way over. He had to keep that
one from being a wild pitch. Bertie calls time and
(02:03:11):
walks out toward the mound to try and settle Big
Brashy down. William and Merry Boy, who was born in
West Springfield, Massachusetts, now lives at Nisius Lake, New York,
often referred to as the Springfield Rifle on the mound
with a count one ball, one strike, two outs, bases loaded,
top of the sixth inning, American League leading five to two,
(02:03:32):
with the National League having the bases loaded and two down,
and the pitch swung on him. File back to the streams.
Strike two. The wind is blowing in a terrific cliff
over toward left field and blowing in toward the plate.
Now is a quarters around Elliott on third, Macy on second,
(02:03:53):
wait Us on first, two outs, sixth inning, one ball,
two strikes, two outs. Richie Ash from the batter left
hand hitter Bi Brash wind up, hears the pitch and
it's in there for.
Speaker 2 (02:04:02):
Called strike three.
Speaker 1 (02:04:03):
Beautiful curve ball, and Dick Crashy pitches himself out of
the jam. Sof of the National League, no runs, two hits,
no American League eras, and three big men left on
for the National League in the score at the end
of five and a half innings remains the American League.
Five of the National League.
Speaker 2 (02:04:20):
Two.
Speaker 1 (02:04:23):
When I say he won five hundred and eleven games
during his pitching career, you know I'm talking about the
all time no hit king.
Speaker 3 (02:04:29):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (02:04:30):
And when I tell you it has the sharpest edge
has ever honed. Today's Gelett blue blade pops into your mind. Men,
this blade pitch your Gellette razor exactly. Its edges line
up absolutely parallel. And extend precisely the right distance. You
avoid the irritation and discomfort caused by misfit blades and
faulty shaving methods for extra convenience at no extra cost
(02:04:54):
by Gelett Blue Blades and the handy Gellette dispenser. This
contains twenty blades with forty shaving edges. You deal them
out one at a time, unwrapped, ready for any Gellette racer. Also,
you pay only ninety eight cents price of the blades alone.
Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp. Use Gellette Blue blades
(02:05:16):
were the sharpest edges ever. Homes coming in to do
the pitching now for the National League and causing who's
and oh's as the fires that ball into the plate
and his warm up pitches is Uile black Holes, sensational
righthander of the Cincinnati Red The buggy Whip Tommy Holmes
has gone into right field to replace Inger Slaughter Homes
(02:05:38):
of the Boston Braves. Ashburn is still in center. Stan
Musial still in left. Bob Belly that's third, Buddy Kurr
short red change ins second, Johnny Mize first change Dason
Miz have been in there ever since the game started.
Bill Macy doing the catching, and you will coming on
(02:06:00):
to do the pitching. As we go into the last
half of the sixth inning. Johnny Sain came into the
fourth inning with one out work the fifth, so he
worked one in two thirds innings. Kenny Keltner leads off
for the American League last half the sixth inning, right
(02:06:21):
hand batter. The first pitch is high ball one. Keltner
walked in the second inning and single the left in
the fourth. It's thundering him the distance out back of
right field five to two. American League. Last half the
sixth inning, Ule Black hot side armed him. It's swung
on and lining off the right fielditiously going back his homes.
He makes the catch knee high as the ball sank
(02:06:41):
on him as he went back on it, and there's
won away for the American League in the last half
of the sixth.
Speaker 2 (02:06:50):
Coming up now is George McQuinn, who's been in.
Speaker 1 (02:06:52):
The first base throughout the contest. McQuinn flied to center
and single to center in his two previous appearances. Ule Black,
along the hill during his third All Star Game, throws
a curveball that swung on bloop throve the head of
Buddy Carr out in the short left center and he
drops in there for a base hit in front of
Stan Muschel, who gave it a good try, and McQuinn
(02:07:12):
is on with his second hit in succession, a bloke
single to left center and for George McQuinn it's his
third All Star Game hit. He had one out of
eight until the start of today's All Star Classic, this
being mcquinn's third appearance in one of these Midsummer Dream games.
(02:07:33):
That's the fifth American League hit of the afternoon, the
first off Blackell and his Bertie Tebbetts Peppery backstop for
the Boston Red Sox, the right hand hitter who replaced
Buddy Rosar, back of the plate. There goes McQuinn hit
and runs on the pitches swung on a miss to
throw down the curry puts the tag on mcquinny and
he's out. And then the decision is keyed by Bill
Stewart and he says he's sayth and Buddy Kerr is
(02:07:55):
arguing of Bill Stuart, the first disturbance.
Speaker 2 (02:07:57):
Of that kind of the ball game.
Speaker 4 (02:07:59):
Buddy Kerr can't contain himself as he goes after Bill Stuart.
Bill Shirk keeps walking away from him man the New
York Giants fighting Sharks office right after the dominion of Vumpire.
Evidently Buddy Kerr must have missed the tag and Bunny
(02:08:19):
is still arguing with Bill Stewart. It scored as a
stolen base. The hit and run was on, the pitch
was way outside. I don't think it was a pitch out.
Tebbit swung the ball anyway.
Speaker 1 (02:08:34):
The throwdown was in time, but somehower the McQuinn got
around the tag, the stolen base, the count on Tebbit's's
one strike one away. Last the sixth inning, Black One
has the stretch signe arms the hitter and it's way
outside for the ball one in one. I'll tell you
one thing, if I were a right hand hitter, I
hate the sentence there against that Black One. He's all
(02:08:55):
arms and legs, will think Lou Smith Cincinnati Sports try
to describe Black One appearing to a batter when he
delivers that ball to a batter, appearing to the batter
as if his man falling down out of a clump
of trees. The tall, right handed throws curveballs outside ball
to two and one side arm sinker specialist nixes it
(02:09:18):
up with good fastball, curve, two balls, one strike to
count on Berdie Tebbets. George McQuinn on second base, went
out last half of the sixth inning. The American League
five the National League two. Stan musueal homeward in the
first inning with one on to give the National League
a temporary to nothing lead. Now you Old Blackwell delivers
bastball swung on him. Miss Tibbets went all the way around.
The count is two to two. The outfield is playing
(02:09:39):
Tibbets just about straight away, perhaps the step toward left
and center and left straight away and right a lot
of room and right center. Bobby Elitt laying halfway back
at third, about four feet off the line. Buddy current
normal short in the step, Red Sheen deast over in
near second, Johnny Mine is about ten feet off the
first base line and back. McQuinn leads away from second.
Eule Black already the stretcher. Look back at second. Here's
(02:10:01):
the pitch to Tibbets. He takes hive for ball three.
So we have Folk count on Bertie three and two.
Bean's ard enough wearing back to the plate. Now, Joe
Papperell at first base. Joe started second, Charlie Barriott third,
very un fired back to the plate the first four
and a half innings. Ready for that payoff pitch to
Bertie tebbitts one down McQuinn Lee's off second.
Speaker 2 (02:10:23):
Here it is.
Speaker 1 (02:10:24):
It swung on in blue foul back of first Johnny Meyers.
Diggs after the ball, but he can get it. It's
out of play into the lower stands to the right
of the National League Dugout, which is located back of
first base, and now just popping his head out of
the American League Dugout as one of the greatest ball
players you've ever seen. He's been injured and yet he
(02:10:45):
appeared here in a uniform today. Ted Williams, he's got
a bat in his hands, and Ted can't sit on
a bench and be idle. He's got to be doing something.
He's got to bat in his hands, and that's what
he likes to have whenever he's round the ballpark. All right,
Bertie Tebbitt's waiting that payoff pitch once again.
Speaker 2 (02:10:59):
Here it is. It's strike the creek.
Speaker 1 (02:11:01):
Paul as tight arm, fastballing outside punter, and Berdie Tabbot
gets mad at Bean's rearding he got red in the
face and hollered at Beans, and Beans took his mask
off and went right back at Bertie. And they're standing
there face to face at home plate, and how Bertie
is leading. And so the second disturbance between the players
and the Empires. And I want you to know that
proves that these two ball club drifts for business. And
(02:11:25):
Ted Williams is gonna use that bat, ladies and gentlemen.
He comes out of the dugout and he's gonna pinch hit.
He's gonna pinch hit or a big grashing. Bertie Tabbot
strikes out and Ted Williams.
Speaker 2 (02:11:39):
Listen to the roar.
Speaker 1 (02:11:49):
Ted Williams, who pulled a rib cartilage a few days
ago and hasn't been able to play for the Boston
Red Sox, nevertheless says, come on to Saint Louis is
in a uniform and is up there to pinch hip
with McQuinn on second. Yell Old Blackwell pitching Ted Williams
taking outside ball one and gets the picture. One of
the greatest right hand pitchers in baseball, one of the
greatest hitters in baseball, left or right up there at
(02:12:12):
the plate in this instance, the left hand hitter, Ted Williams,
the kid the stretch by Blackwolf.
Speaker 2 (02:12:18):
Look back at second. Here's the pitch to Ted.
Speaker 1 (02:12:20):
Williams takes a curve inside ball two, and Ted would
certainly have to be able to take his full cut.
We watched him in batting practice. He wasn't taking that
real Williams cut of the ball.
Speaker 2 (02:12:31):
But you know he's got so much.
Speaker 1 (02:12:32):
Power he can take a half swing in someone over
the wall. Two balls now strikes the colon Williams. Two outs,
last half the sixth inning, five to two favor of
the American League. The outfield around toward right. Buddy Kerrs
slinging directly in back of second base, says the shift
is on the stretch to pitch, Williams accidentally files one
(02:12:52):
off to the right of the plate to slow curve.
He tried to check you swing. He was ready to
step into the pitch. He saw a slow curve coming
up there, and he tried to check you swing. But
the ball hit the handle of the bat and skidded
file off to the right of the plate. The National
League version of the shift has Buddy Kerr the shortstop,
playing directly in back of second base. Most times the
shortstop will play a normal second with your second basement
(02:13:15):
over toward first, and your first baseman right on top
of the first baseline. Seene Dees is well over toward first.
Mines is on the line. Black Bell ready, here's the
delivery curve. Ball is outside for ball three, three and one.
Bob Elliot's the third baseman's laying about ten fifteen feet
off the third base line halfway back, so it's a
(02:13:36):
three one count on Williams hands. Will look at Chuck
Dressen coaching at third for any time might be Sonny's way,
and you can be sure that Bucky Harris has go ahead,
done and hit it if you like it. So Blackwooll
is ready the buggy wi. Here's a three to one pitch.
Ted Williams takes high outside ball four and head scrolls.
(02:13:56):
Some of the fans indicate their disclass. You're over Williams
ability to swing at one. But Ted takes a walk
down the first base and now Native Saint Louisan's applaud
the appearance of one of their own Saint Louis Brownies,
Al Zilla, And here is Hal Newhuser going down to
run for Ted Williams. Hal Newhuser, great left hand pitcher
(02:14:17):
of the Detroit Tigers, makes his appearance in the ball
game as a runner for Ted Williams.
Speaker 2 (02:14:27):
We're in the last half of.
Speaker 1 (02:14:28):
The six running, Ladies and gentlemen, with a score the
American League five, the National League two. They're two outs.
Mcquinn's on second. New House are running for Williams is
on first. The batter is al Zilla, left hand hitter
Uld Blackman has to stretch to pitch zerrilla swings and
sons of bounding ball after Shandy's two hawks. He's up
with it over the curve for the force out on
New Hawser. And that is all for the American League
(02:14:50):
in the last half of the six no runs, one hit,
no errors, two men left on and the score at
the end of sixth innings the American League five, the
National League two. And right now let's pause for station identification.
(02:15:14):
This is the world's largest network, the Mutual Broadcasting System.
Ladies and gentlemen, speaking to you once again from Sportsland's
Park in Saint Louis. The appearance of Ted Williams gives
occasion to utter the thoughts of the Baseball Commissioner. Commissioner
ab Chandler, who authorized us to make this statement to
you baseball fans of America. He said that almost without exception,
(02:15:37):
every man who was selected by you fans and by
the managers is here today in uniform, despite injuries or
whatever the situation may be. And he wants to assure
you that in the future the Major League ballplayers will
continue to keep faith for the baseball fans of America,
and that in the future all men who are selected
(02:16:00):
will be here in uniform if it's physically possible for
them to be here. Rashy worked three innings, gave up
three hits, no runs, and as the score now stands,
the situation now stands, Ranshy may be credited with the victory.
Walt Masterson went the first three innings, giving up a
home run to Stan Muschell in the first inning with
(02:16:21):
one on. Here's the pitch, Shane Ds swings golf the
grounder out towards second. Bobby Door scoops it up, throws
over to McQuinn in time, and there's one away is
the ball almost played a dirty trick on Bobby by
taking a bad hot, but Bobby watched it and played
it perfectly to retire. Shane d's for the first out
on the top of the seven, and here is Stan Musil,
(02:16:42):
who hit a home run on the first inning with
one arm. Richie Ashburn let off and got himself an
infield hit mutual single in the third, struck out.
Speaker 2 (02:16:49):
On the fifth, right.
Speaker 1 (02:16:50):
Hander Joe Coleman comes in with an overhand curveball that
zips over that inside corner for a call strike. Joe
Coleman of the Philadelphia Udi, six foot two hundred and
ninety three pounder comes in.
Speaker 2 (02:17:04):
With fastball that's outside one one. Coleman, a twenty five
year old boy, is.
Speaker 1 (02:17:09):
From Arlington, Massachusetts, and we have quite a number of
New Englanders in the ball game today for both teams.
I'll feel around toward right. Here's your delivery. It's a
curve inside, round the knees, ball to two and one,
one out seventh. Johnny Miies is on deck, Stan Neuschail
at the plate, and Ralph Kiner is throwing out the bullpen.
(02:17:31):
He may see some action shortly. Here's your pitch. Newshield
takes outside ball three, three in one. Joe Coleman, you know,
is the boy that was discovered by father Gilbert, who
discovered by Ruth Now the pitch to stand inside ball four,
and one of the great hitters in baseball gets the
(02:17:52):
base on balls here in the seventh inning and coming
to bat is Johnny Meyes of the New York Giants,
who's been in the ball game all the way, has
hands Musial Mayus has had one out of three first
inning single, get into a fourth play in the third inning,
and grounded out the second and the fifth. Coleman delivers
(02:18:15):
pitch that inside for ball one. For the American League.
You've got Tommy Henry in left field, Dude Ebers in center.
They've been in all the way, al Zarella and right,
having replaced Pat Mullen. Kenny Keelton is at third. He's
been in there all the way. Junior Stevens at short
replaced Bedroaux Dorit second, replaced Gordon McQuinn at first. In
there all the way. The pitch myz holes up as
(02:18:36):
you start to swing at a curb. It's came inside
for ball two. Bertie Tappitts is back to the plate
for the American League, having relieved Buddy Rosar. Joe Coleman
on the hill for the American League, having replaced Vic
Raschie delivers to Myze, who takes a fastball over at
the knees. Strike one, call to him on the colum
(02:18:58):
Big John Eddie Dyer managed Cardinals, coaching at third, Mellott,
manager of the New York Giants, coaching at first. McQuinn
not holding against Mutuel to step in behind him. Coleman
ready delivers Myz takes strike two, called over the inside corner,
letter high. Big John steps out and looks around at
Bean's ridden to question the decision as Bertie Teviott throw
(02:19:18):
back to Coleman got away from him, rolled out towards
second and door and Stevens alert converged to keep the
ball from going in the center. No advance, two balls,
two strikes, one out. National League fans starting that rhythmic applause,
calling for a rally. Joe Coleman ready delivers. Johnny my
swings and grounds at foul off to the right of
the plate. There's thunder in the distance, and we hope
(02:19:39):
that the wind will blow the storm away. We're in
the seventh thinning with the score the American League five.
The National League two. National League got off to two
nothing leading the first inning. American League got one on
the second, one on the third and three in the
fourth to go ahead five to two, one down Musul
on first, My is the batter of the count two
(02:20:00):
to Coleman delivers John swings and he missus strike three
a slow curve. We've noticed that the American League pitchers
have been slowing up on these sluggers in the right
spot when they've had to count in the right spot.
And now here is Tommy Holmes, who replaced Ino Slaughter
in right field. Tommy Holmes, a Brooklyn boy playing with

New York yank He's hitting three thirty on the season,
a left hand bantner, a nice lad step. Time of

You the Commissioner in his entire entourage. Coleman asset. Here's
the pitch swung on and fouled off the left of

which is the home team in this game, back of
third base. This is Tommy Holmes's first appearance in an
(02:21:12):
All Star Game. Two strikes on him, two outs, top
half the seventh inning, five to two, forevent of the
American League. Stan Muschel on first base. Joe Coleman, a
member of those amazing Philadelphia Athletics, doing the pitching now,
having just come on to this inning, throws the pitch
is spung on top out to the mound, taking the
one hot by Coleman, throws over to McQuinn. Holmes is
(02:21:33):
out and that's all for the National League. In the
top half of the seventh inning, no runs, no hits,
no American League eras one left on for the National League.
A total of nine they've stranded, and at the end
of six and a half innings the score American League five,
National League two. You know, old timers, save us next
(02:21:55):
to him, possible to hit a ball past Jimmy Collins,
the greatest of all third basemen. Yeah, and going to
the impossible. You can't name another shaving instrument that compares
with a modern gelette one piece razors take for instance,
the improved Gelett Superspeed razor that changes blades instantly. Twists

Speaker 1 (02:22:34):
There's nothing to fit together, nothing to jam or clog.
For modern shaving comfort and convenience, get the improved Gelette

last half of the seventh inning. Changes in the National
League lineup replacing Al Shand's the second is Bill Rickney
of the New York Giants. Stan Muschel has moved over
to center field, and Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates
has taken over in left field. So make those changes
if you will, put them usual in Richie Ashburn's place
in center and foot, Ralph Kiner in left field. Tommy
(02:23:15):
Henrick leading off last of the seven, the Ule Blackwell
throws a curve that's outside for ball one. Put Bill
Rickney in there at second base in place of Red Chende's.
Speaker 2 (02:23:28):
Right hander.
Speaker 1 (02:23:29):
Yule Blackwell delivers Tommy Henrick takes right in there for
a call strike. Fastball zipped over there about letter hive.
It's a five to two ball games play of the
American League. Last half the seventh. Thy Hendrick's been in
the all all the way. He struck out twice, popped
out the short Once Blackwell throws, fastball is swung on,
drilled foul down the left field line, and out of plays.
Speaker 2 (02:23:50):
It goes into the stands.
Speaker 1 (02:23:52):
One ball, who strikes the count on Tommy Boy from
Mastell in Ohio, considered by many to be one of
the most under baseball players in the major leagues. One ball,
two strikes the count. Blackwell hasn't looked over into the
National League dugout. Evidently Leo Droscher must have hollered at
him to throw a certain kind of a pitch. But anyway,
(02:24:13):
here it comes and it's high ball to two to
the count. This is Hendrix's third All Star Game. He
came in Today's classic with one out of five he
has knit today in three appearances, two balls, two strikes you,
Old Blackwell delivers curve ball swung on and filed off
(02:24:35):
again back at third base into the upper deck. Count
holds it to too. We are indebted for the official
scoring on doubtful plays to mister ed Burns, Bob Burns
and Sid Keener of the fourth estate. Now the two
(02:24:55):
to two pitch on its way. Tommy Henrick swings and
founds another one off of the left of the player
under the upper deck as the thunder breaks loose with
an ominous warning. And we hope that's all it will be,
is just a warning. We'll be nice and gentle and
quiet if you just let the rain hold off for
a little while longer. Five to two, American League, last
(02:25:18):
to seven Again, the pitch to Henry Tommy takes outside
fastball ball three, and the Stringers run out to three
and two. Blackwell has won six and lost five this year.
A sore arm took charge of him shortly after the
season got underway, and he has not been able to
establish the sensational record this year that he did last year.
(02:25:38):
Now the payoff pitch to Tommy Henry swung on popped
up in the air down the left field line, going
foul and out of play in the lower stands. As
Ralph kind of started digging over for it, bob Elli didn't.
Buddy Cerr both guarded the move as they saw it
was foul and held up. Elliott third, Kurr short, Rickney second,
Myze first, Macy catching Newshield, center, Holmes right, Blackwell pitching
(02:26:05):
to Tommy Henrick and the three to two delivery fastball
is inside ball four and Henrik gets the base on balls,
the lead all for the American League in the last
half of the seventh INNY. That is the sixth base
on balls given up by National League pitchers today. And
(02:26:27):
here is Junior Stevens coming to bat. Burne Stevens, who
replaced Luba George Short. Stephens struck out on the fifth
inning in his first time at bat today. Black All
ready side arms Stephens and the pitches outside ball one
(02:26:51):
one ball off strikes. Stephens has been a great help
of those Red Sox particuted in the last couple of weeks.
Has really been banging the ball. He ext to pitch
inside now for ball two. He's been challenging Ted Williamson
Joe Demadjoe for runs batted in honors in the American
League and home run honors as well. Two balls, no
(02:27:12):
strikes to count outfield toward left Stevens is a full hitter.
Nobody out Henrick on first. Johnny Maie is holding against him.
Blackwell taking his time, looks in against the sign from
Phil Macy. Thundering again. Henrick leads off first. Blackwell, ready,
(02:27:33):
I look around. Here's your pitch, swung on hit in
the hole between third and short out and the left
field from the base hits Kiner takes the ball on
the hot throws toward third, holding Henrick at second base.
Speaker 2 (02:27:44):
Go burn.
Speaker 1 (02:27:45):
Stevens singles to left field to send Henrick down the
second and there's renewed activity now in the National League
bullpen looks like Elmer Riddle, Elma Riddle of the Pittsburgh Pirates,
who first game theme as a member of the Cincinnati Reads.
He is beginning to walk the bullpen, and we see
a flash of lightning off back of bright fields. And
(02:28:08):
there's the thunder that follows. And here's Bobby Door at
the plate with the runners on first and second. The
stretch by Blackwell. Here's the pitch. Bobby shortens up misses
an attempted bunner throw down to Buddy Kerr and Hendrick
is take the second base as the tag was put
on his sliding underneath it. Bill Stuart call it. Bobby
Door missed an attempted bunt. The Runners were way off
their respected bases, ready to move. Bill Macy cut loose
(02:28:31):
with the beautiful throw down on the bag, which Buddy
Kirk came over and took on the run. Put the
tag on Hendricks sliding in, but Henrick beat the tag.
Elliott's in close at third, MEA's in close at first
to look for the bunt. Edie it will try to
anchor it third in the event Blackwell or MIAs can
handle the bun or Macy the catcher. Now the pitch
is bunnet popped up in the air. Myers comes in fast,
(02:28:52):
grabs it in the air for the eye, and the
Runners alert streaked back to their respected bases, run away
the Bobby Door attempting to sacrifice out to Johnny Mayes.
Halfway between home playton first base and now coming to
bat is Hootivers. He's been in there all the ways.
The Detroit Tiger outfielder hit a home run the second
inning for the first American League run, popped the short
(02:29:14):
in the fourth and looked at the third strike in
the fifth inning bats we're right handed five to two
American League Last the seventh one out, runners on first
and second, Eul black Will delivers Hootivers swings and files
a curve off back of first base out of play
against the effer deck steel girder, sometimes known as a facade.
(02:29:35):
One strike to count one out evers the right hand
hit of the battle of the outfield toward left.
Speaker 2 (02:29:41):
Henrick Is on.
Speaker 1 (02:29:41):
Second, Burns Stevens on first infield shaded around toward third,
with bomb belly it laying halfway back at third and
about three or four feet off the line. Black Will
all set, looks back at second and then steps off Rover,
bluffs a throw and bluffs Henrick back towards second. Nobody
was over to take the throw. In any event, once again,
we're ready to stretch by Black Wue runners dance away.
Here's a crossfire that's outside ball one to Hootibs one
(02:30:06):
ball one Striker a young man who came to the
Tigers counted as a potential great and who was timed
for a couple of years by injuries so far this season.
He's doing nicely, thank you. Blackwell throws curve that swung
on and missed strike two. I'm telling you that side
(02:30:27):
arm stuff of Blackwell's his murder on the right hand hitter.
One ball, two strikes, the con hootib's the batter, Tommy
Henrick eases off second base.
Speaker 2 (02:30:42):
Steven's off first.
Speaker 1 (02:30:42):
Johnny Mai is not holding against Stevens, of course, He's
laying back deep at first, about ten feet off the line.
Blackwell again prepares to work, takes the stretch, looks back
at second base. Here's the one two pitch high outside.
The ball bounces out of lid of Macy, no advance,
and the count that comes to two. Jimmy Bridd has
(02:31:05):
seen You'll Blackwell work many a ball game. He looks
awful rough, even from a radio broadcasting booth, doesn't he, jim.
Speaker 2 (02:31:12):
I wouldn't want to stand up there where a bat
that short.
Speaker 1 (02:31:14):
Now, two balls, two strikes, one out. Blackwell sets once again,
looks back at second. Here's his pitch, swung on and
fouled off back of first, out of play, going into
the low stands as another clap of thunder bursts overhead
(02:31:37):
a short sleeve crowd, and they have long since gathered
their belongings, preparing to make a mad dash to the
nearest shelter. In the event the almost looking clouds overhead
should let their raft down upon those who have been
kind enough to come out to see this all Star game.
(02:31:57):
Eul Blackwell throws pitches swung on foul tip and gets
away from Phil and the count holds it to too.
It's a five to two ball game, Ladies and gentlemen.
Last half of the seventh inning favor the American League.
The broadcast coming too are the best wishes of did
you let Safety Razor Company? From Sportsman's Park in Saint Louis.
(02:32:18):
Ul Blackwell, fourth pitcher used by the National League today
on the hill, pitching to Hoot Evers with Tommy Henrick,
who walked on second base, and Burn Stevens, who singled
on first.
Speaker 2 (02:32:30):
And there's one out now.
Speaker 1 (02:32:32):
The two to two pitch swung on file off again
to the right of the plate as Evers keeps trying
to get hold of it, balls out of play. Phil
Macy gets a new ball from played on Pira Beans
Reard and tosses out to Blackwood. Meantime, Alma Riddle continues
to work in the bullpen for the National League. Blackwell
(02:32:56):
checks with Macy for the sign. Henrick's about to wear
out the baseline, leading off second and Stevens from first.
Here's your pitch, fastball swung on, hit down the right
field line, and he goes foul into the National League bullpen.
That's an indication in itself of how speedy Blackwell is.
When a full hitter like hoot Evers continually hits him
(02:33:19):
the right field go foul shows that it's tough to
get around on black One's fast up. The right hander
looks in and get that sign from Macy. Henrick again
leads off second, Burns Stevens takes his lead off first,
the tall right hander that has the stretch. Here's the pitch,
(02:33:41):
swung on, foul off again off to the right of
the plane. The ball down and bounces back down into
the stands from off the roof. And of course, as
we indicated to you earlier, Commissioner Chandler said that no
matter how dark it might become, if the ball game
should be tied up, we'll turn on the lights and
keep going till the game reaches a conclusion. Of course,
(02:34:07):
it's difficult to do very much about the rain. If
the rain comes down, I'm afraid we shan't be able
to help out that situation. Two balls, two strikes, one out,
runners on first and second. You ole black already. Here's
his pitch. It's swung on by Evers, popped up into
the air and about the mound, and with one out,
we're looking for the infield flyer rule to be called.
(02:34:29):
It is, but Rickney comes in to make the catch
of the mound, making the catch that rabbit Marinville used
to make around the mid section ring. That ball popped
into his glove as he holds his glove just about
belt high. But the batter is automatically out anyway out
of the rule which says with the runners on first
and second, or first, second and third less than two out.
If a ball is popped into the air, which in
(02:34:51):
the judgment of the Empire, can be easily handled by
an infielder, the batter is automatically out. The runners move
with their own risk. So Evers popped to Rickney at
the mound. And here's Kenny Keeltner who walks single to
left and flying to right.
Speaker 2 (02:35:06):
Two men down. Here's the pitch, the right hand battery.
Speaker 1 (02:35:08):
He swings and sends it drive out the left bild
Ralph Kinner backing up, getting a hundred, and he takes
it for the out. So once again Yule Blackwell pitches
himself out of a potential jam. No runs for the
American League, one hit, no errors for the National League.
Two men left on for the American League, a total
of seventh that they have stranded, and the score at
the end of seven innings remains the American League five,
(02:35:31):
the National League two. And incidentally, a few are sticklers
for tradition and statistics. Never has a National League entry
ever won an All Star Game when it has been
the visiting team. The official paid attendance today thirty four thousand,
nine nine folks over thirty four thousand, where the total
(02:35:55):
receipts ninety three, four hundred and forty seven dollars and
seven cents. And of course, the All Star Game, as
you know, is played for indigent ballplayers. That's where the
money goes. Four ballplayers who have found their luck going
against them after they have retired from active play. All right,
(02:36:16):
we're ready now to move into the first half of
the eighth innings, the American League got in front by
a five to two score, and here is Bob Elliott
coming up for the National League.
Speaker 2 (02:36:27):
Right hand batter Joe Coleman of the Athletics throws fastball, high,
inside ball, one one ball. Those strikes.
Speaker 1 (02:36:34):
At the end of the game, Franz Locks will be
on hand to give you a recapitulation of what occurred
during the course of the game if you missed any
of it.
Speaker 2 (02:36:41):
There's a curve that throwing.
Speaker 1 (02:36:42):
An outside corner for a call strike, and Elliott steps
out of the batter's box a little bit angry about it,
and Bean's reardan is looking away from him as the
fans have something to say. One ball, one strike, Joe
(02:37:05):
Coleman ready the right hander throws. Elliott swings and sends
a long drive deeper right field. Alzarella backs up near
the wall and makes the catch for the out of
that ball, taking off as it left the vat looked
as if it might go deeper than it did and
then sank, which cut down the distance of the drive.
So Elliott lines to al Zarella in right center. First
(02:37:27):
half of the eighth inning with the score of the
American League five the National League two. Stan Muschel's furstening
homer with one aboard gave the National League a temporary
to nothing lead. Hootivers in a home run the second
to make it two to one. The American League got
another in the third and three and the fourth the
lead five to two. There's a pitch swung on by
Phil Macy, hit high end in the air, file down
the right field line. George McQuinn, giving chase two one hundred,
(02:37:49):
makes the catch some forty five to fifty feet down
the line past first base, and then foul territory. Two
up and two away quickly for the National League in
the eighth inning, and here comes Buddy Kerr the New
York Giants, a native of New York, another in the
long line of native New Yorkers who have reached Major
League fame, including people like the late lou Gerig and
(02:38:12):
Joe Judge and Hank Greenberg, who incidentally is here today.
Buddy Kerr right hand batter, swings and files it off
behind the plate, strike one. Buddy Kerr replaced Pee Wee
Reese at short Keltner third, Steven short door, second, McQuinn first,
Coleman pitching. Kerr taking a curve high outside one in
(02:38:33):
one dollar count. Coleman asks for a new ball. Bertie
Tabbitts turns around and gets it from being's ridden. I
feel playing Buddy step toward left. Coleman, working rapidly, delivers
pitches bunned but fouled off to the left of the plate.
Buddy Kerr, who's off and running, has to come back.
He's trying to get on any way. He could perhaps
(02:38:55):
start something. And the count is one and two on
the National League shortstop. Now your delivery is outside ball two.
(02:39:17):
Two to the count, two balls, two strikes, two outs,
eight h five to two American League. Coleman getting a
signed from Berdie Tubbitts, leans forward into the wind up around,
comes with the right arm the pitch curveball just outside
for ball three. Coleman started to take that walk off
the mound, throw the dugout the beans urd and said no,
(02:39:39):
ball three. So we have a full count on Buddy
Kerr with two outs here in the eighth and the
payoff pitch is strike three.
Speaker 2 (02:39:48):
Call the curveball. They've got the outside corner.
Speaker 1 (02:39:51):
As Buddy started to take a walk, he stops at
home pay to argue with Bean's ridding, but to no avail,
no runs for the National League, no hiss, no errors
for the American League, nobody left on for the National League,
and at the end of seven and a half innings
the score American League five, National League two.
Speaker 2 (02:40:10):
Fans.
Speaker 1 (02:40:11):
You'll never know what modern shaving speed and ease are
like until you use the improved Gellette Super Speed Raiser
that changes played instantly. This razor has a notched positioning
bar for use with the Gelett Blue Blade dispenser. You
just took on a blade and falls in places presto.
Then twist the handle and you're ready for the smoothest,
(02:40:32):
most crushing shave you ever had.
Speaker 2 (02:40:34):
A man.
Speaker 1 (02:40:34):
It doesn't take a locksmith to make this combination. Click mosser.
This has nothing to fit together, nothing to jam or clog.
Cleaning is no trick either. Simply loosen the razor, rinse
and shake. Why not enjoy this extra shaving comfort inconvenience,
Ask for the improved Gellette Superspeed Raiser with ten blade
(02:40:56):
Gellette dispenser. Get this regular dollar fifty value only a
dollar ready now for the last half of the eighth inning,
It'll be George McQuinn Berdie Tebbitts first two men up
for the American League, and then Joe Coleman the schedule
to follow. Eule Blackwell delivers to the left hand hitter.
(02:41:18):
McQuinn swings and he misses strike one. Mcquinn's been in
there all the way. He's had two out of three
singling his last two times up. Cincinnati right hander throws
fastball that backs McQuinn away.
Speaker 2 (02:41:34):
Ball one.
Speaker 1 (02:41:42):
Now the one one pitch to McQuinn backs him away again.
This was a curve ball and the count is two
and one high. Inside pitch outfield playing toward right and
center and right straight a win left the big hole
left center.
Speaker 2 (02:42:00):
Here's your pitch.
Speaker 1 (02:42:01):
McQuinn swings and sends a ground ball down the first baseline.
Johnny Miez each it up a race of the bag
minus wins it. McQuinn is out and there's one away
in the last half of the eighth thumbing for the
American League, and now Bertie Tebbitts stroves to the plate.
Ul Blackwell is one of the few sine arm sinker
(02:42:21):
specialists right handers who is almost equally as tough on
left hand hitters as he is on the right hand hitters.
He pitches now of Bertie Tebbitts. Outside ball one. You
see Blackwell as a very tall fellow, and he takes
a step out toward that third base line, and when
the ball comes in over the plate looks as if
(02:42:43):
it's coming in from third base. Now the pitch just
misses the outside corner for ball two. Blackwell is a
native of California. Lives in San Dimas, California.
Speaker 2 (02:42:55):
Right now.
Speaker 1 (02:42:55):
I was born in Presno. The two nothing delivery outside
ball three, three balls, no strikes, three nothing to count on.
Bertie Tebbets. Blackwell's father is out here today to watch
(02:43:17):
your son in action.
Speaker 2 (02:43:18):
We had the pleasure of meeting him.
Speaker 1 (02:43:20):
As folks stirred around about Saint Louis last evening, all
agog about the All Star Game. Now the pitch is
over the inside corner for a call strike. Tibbets start
take a walk and mainsridden honor and out strike. Perhaps
you may have heard it in the background over these microphones,
and of course that stirred some excitement from the fans.
Five to two American League, last half the eighth, and
(02:43:42):
he won out no money on the free one pitch
to Tibbets. Outside ball four, and Bertie walks that's the
seventh based on balls issued by National League pitchers today.
And Blackwall walks in toward the plate to argue with
Beans rearding not too vehemently, but he's a little bit irked,
(02:44:08):
and he starts back toward the mound and stops and
turns around, holler something else back to Beans. To all
intents and purposes, he's merely saying, as Jim Britt and
I often hear the ballplayers talking, he's merely asking Beans,
you to give him a break on the corners. All right,
here's Joe Coleman up there to hit for himself, right handed.
(02:44:30):
Bertie tebbitts on first, one out last, ethening five, two
American leagues, Jule black are ready to work the stretch.
Here's the pitch. Coleman bunts and files it off to
the right of the plate, strike one. It was quite
a nice gesture on the part of the Baseball Commissioner
to allow Bert Shotton to throw out the first ball today.
(02:44:53):
Burt Shotton, who directed the Brooklyn Dodgers through the nineteen
forty seven National League pennant, and everybody seemed very pleased
with it. Now the pitch to Coleman. He takes a fastball,
low ball one.
Speaker 2 (02:45:06):
One and one.
Speaker 1 (02:45:07):
Bert Shotton was a guest of the National League at
the game today. One ball, one, strike, one out. Tebbit's
leads off first, black Woe pitching to Coleman. Here to
is Coleman buns and pops it in the air, but
black One can't get it, gets by him, but minus
his backing up, picks it up throws to Rickney covering first,
(02:45:28):
in time for the out on Coleman. It was a
little low pop about three feet off the ground. Blackwell
dashed in reached down for it, but the ball hit
in front of his glove, bounded by him, but Myz
backed him up near the mound and tossed over to Rickney,
covering first for the out on Coleman. It's a sacrifice,
(02:45:50):
moving Tebbets down the second and with two down, here
is al Zarella, left hand batter, having a great year
with the Saint Louis Browns.
Speaker 2 (02:46:00):
Black Hole ready to work.
Speaker 1 (02:46:01):
Here's his pitch, swung on and missed strike one, a
sweeping curve ball that had Drilla fool all the way
the National League started. Branca came on with Schmidts, who
fared worst of all to day. Schmitz was relieved by
saying and Blackwell in turn took over for Sane. Now
the pitch swung on hit up into the air out
(02:46:22):
in the center field, going back forth to Stan Newshal,
he's under it makes the catch in deep center for
the third out of the inning. No runs for the
American League, no hits, no National League girls. One left
on for the Americans, a total of eighth that they's stranded.
Speaker 2 (02:46:42):
The National League.
Speaker 1 (02:46:44):
Has tranded nine men during the course of the ball game,
and we're all set to move into the top half
of the ninth inning with the American League leading five
to two. As we indicated to you, ladies and gentlemen,
Franz Locks, we'll be on at the conclusion of this
game to give you a recapitulation on how the runs
were scored. So we shan't bother you with those details
(02:47:04):
at the present time. They'll be given to you very shortly.
At the moment we pause for station identification. This is
the mutual broadcasting system going into the top half of
(02:47:30):
the ninth and thing the National League trailing by three runs.
It's five to two. American League, and we're going to
have a pinch hitter for you, O Blackwolf. Bobby Thompson,
(02:47:57):
as we check of the New York Giants, is going
to come up to bat for Black Bull. He will
be followed by Ralph Kiner, and then Bill Rigney is
scheduled to follow. So the National League comes up in
the ninth ine, trailing five to two. Bobby Thompson making
(02:48:20):
his first appearance in an All Star Ball game. Right
hand banner Joe Coleman into the wind up throws Thompson
takes a curve outside for ball one. Bobby is one
of the few Major League ballplayers that was born in
a foreign country. He swings and founds it off onto
(02:48:41):
the screen, strike one. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland,
but now resides in Staten Island.
Speaker 2 (02:48:48):
New York.
Speaker 1 (02:48:52):
Of course, he came over here when he was quite
young and learned the American game, and learned it well.
The right hand hitters swings and files it off strike two.
(02:49:15):
Bill Marshallton of the Athletics as a Canadian. To give
you another example, here's the pitch over the head of
Bobby Thompson. Ball two, Elmer Bato over the Philadelphia. A's
was born in Rybnik, Czechoslovakia. To add another as we
quickly search our memory, two balls, two strikes to count
on Bobby Thompson pinch hitting for Ule Black one ninth inning,
(02:49:37):
five to two American League, and here comes the rain
and the folks are scattering out of the boxes. Coleman
delivers swung on and missed by Bobby Thompson's strike three,
and there's one out of the ninth inning. Coming to
band is Ralph Kiner, and the rain kind enough to
hold off till the ninth inning. Here, with one out
begins to come down. That's Sportsman's Park in Saint Louis,
(02:49:59):
and Ralph Kiner steps to the plate for the first
time in the ball game. Joe Coleman's into the wind up,
here's the pitch. Kiner swings and sons the ground ball
white of third Keltner in front of Steven's up with
it over to McQuinn in time for out number two.
So they're two away from the National League in the
ninth inning, and here's Bill Rigney of the New York
(02:50:22):
Giants coming to bat with a score five to two
in favor of the American League, and the rain is
beginning to come down, and perhaps our prayerful remarks over
the past few innings asking the rain to stay away,
we're heated, at least up until this point. With two
outs on the top of the ninth inning, with Joe
Coleman into the wind up pitching to the right hand
batter and it's high inside for ball one, one ball,
(02:50:43):
no strikes, five to two American League, ninth hight. Joe
Coleman delivers pitches low ball to two balls, no strikes,
and the rain is really beginning to pour down hard,
and the Empire's are hopeful to a degree the game
will be able to be concluded in its entirety before
(02:51:04):
the rains poured down too hard. There are two outs
here in the ninth inning, two balls, no strikes on Rickney,
the rain pouring, and the pitch is inside for ball three,
three balls, no strikes, and ladies and gentlemen, with everybody
scattering out of the field boxes remaining and taking his
soaking his Commissioner Chandler, the pitch is high ball for
Rickney walks. Commissioner Chandler refuses to budge out of his
(02:51:27):
seat along with his two boys, Ben and Sam and
he's sitting right out there in it, his sentiments being
I'm a commissioner of baseball. Baseball is my game, and
I'm going to stick with it, rain and all rain.
Here's Stan newshow. That's some left handed and the pitch
(02:51:55):
Mutual chicks in there for a call strike. Rickneyson balls
two out ninety five to two. Pay for the American
League to stretch by Coleman pitching the Musual a left
hand Bantner takes outside now for ball one, one and one.
Stan hit a home run in the first inning, single
descent on the third, struck out in the fifth, and
walked to the seven. Roman all set again, checks his runner.
(02:52:20):
Here's the pitch Musual trings and sends the ground ball
out to Bobby Door.
Speaker 3 (02:52:24):
Up with it.
Speaker 1 (02:52:25):
There's the throw over to George McQuinn in time for
the out, and the ball game is over and the
American League defeats the National League by a score of
five to two to become victorious for the eleventh time
in fifteen games. On So, all ladies and gentlemen, we
come to the end of this fifteenth Annual All Star Classic,
(02:52:45):
brought to you with the best wishes and compliment of
the to Let Safety Razor Company in another It's cavalcative sports.
We hope that you enjoyed the play by play description
of this game, and it was a real pleasure to
once again have been associated with Jim Britt who brought
you the first four and a half innings, and France
Locks who will give you the summary. And this is
Mel Allen, thanking you very much for tuning us in
(02:53:07):
this afternoon and we hope to see you again soon.
And now here is France Locks. Thank you very much, Mel.
And first I want to compliment you and Jim Brett
on doing a splendid job here this afternoon and giving
the fans a play by play the script into this game,
a little rundown on actually what happened and how it happened.
The totals on the game for the National League show
(02:53:28):
two runs, eight hits, no airs, called the American League
five runs, six hits and no air. The National Beam
two up on hits, but they were a little bit
down on runs. They started off by registering two runs
in the very first inning. The National League insidentby had
a total of ten men left on base, while the
American League had a total of eight men.
Speaker 2 (02:53:50):
Johnny Schmidt, who was in there for.
Speaker 1 (02:53:52):
The Chicago cub was charged with a loss this afternoon,
and vic Raschi, who went in to relieve Masterson after
matters went out of the ball game, was the winning pitcher.
And incidentally, that makes the sixth time that a New
York Yankee pitcher has been the winning pitcher in the
All Star Classic. Last year it was Shay of the
(02:54:14):
New York Yankees, and then in nineteen forty two it
was Bud Chandler, and Gomez had three of them to
his credit in nineteen thirty three, again in nineteen thirty five,
and in nineteen thirty seven, so the Yankees really have
a monopoly on the winning pitchers.
Speaker 2 (02:54:29):
In the All Star Game.
Speaker 1 (02:54:31):
The game started off in the first inning with Masterson
on the mound for the Washington Senators, and it looked
like the National League was really going to go to
town when Richie Ashburn matched one down through the box.
Joe Gordon made a great stop over back of second base,
but his throw was a little bit high and it
was an infield hit for Ashburn and then Shaney's. While
(02:54:53):
Shaney's was batting, Ashburn moved down to second base, getting
credit for a stolen base, and then Shaney he grounded
out unassisted, with Icebrin moving over to third, and then
Stan music All stepped up to the plate and after
having to count two strikes and one ball, he hit
one on top of the right center field pavilion for
a home run to put the National League out in
(02:55:13):
the league and that's.
Speaker 2 (02:55:15):
The only runs that they scored for the day.
Speaker 1 (02:55:16):
Johnny Mayes followed up with a single and then Ena
Slaughter walked, but they couldn't produce any more hits there
in the first inning to get any more runs. The
American League came up with our first run and the
second inning, after one away when Hoodiber sent a line
drive into the left field seats, the American Leaguers came
back to tye the ball game in the last half
(02:55:37):
of the third without the assistance of a hit, two
walks and a double steal the resulted in the damaged there.
In that inning, Vic Rashie, who happened to be the
first batter up, walked, and then Pat Mullen also walked
on four straight pitches. Then Hendrick struck out was called
(02:55:57):
out on strikes and while they worked the double steel
on the third strike, with Rashie moving over to third
and Mulling down to second base. And then Blue Bodrol
sent a fly ball out to Slaughter in right steal
and the runner scored with the run that tied up
(02:56:20):
the ball game. Then their final three runs came in
the fourth inning, after one away on a neat play
by Peewee Reechs who he took care of a fly
ball by Hootivers that looked like it was going.
Speaker 2 (02:56:29):
To fall in there for Texas.
Speaker 1 (02:56:30):
Leaguer, and then two singles, a walk and another single,
and that single, incidentally was by the pitcher.
