Speaker 1 (00:08):
Look. John deal Sharp shall use Gellette Blue blades with
the sharpest edges of a home. Gellett's Cavalcator Sports is
on the air from Everittsfield here in Brooklyn, Gellette presents
the World Series. Good afternoon Baseball fans everywhere. This is
Red Barber with Mel Allen reading you for the Gellette

(00:30):
Safe to raise the company as the New York Yankees
and the Brooklyn Dodgers get ready for their third game
in this nineteen forty nine championship classic. Fans for the
tops and sports tune in Gellett's Cavalcado Sports the year round.
Every Friday night, Jellett broadcast the major boxing bout of
the week for the fistic Fanshy Coast of Ghost also

(00:50):
as their car leading events of Turf Diaminant grenan or
ad for Gellette fans everywhere. The weather man has given
us a forecast of cloudy weather and no rain, and
he's been exactly correct. It is overcast in cloudy as
the series switches over here to the heart of flat Bush,
but the prediction is still no rain. The air is heavy.

(01:13):
There is a strong wind coming in from right field,
which is the short sector which means that left hand
pole hitters will be at a disadvantage. The wind is
blowing quartering toward the left field stands, so the right
hand batters who hit a high long drive figure to
have an advantage on the wind. Ralph Franker is to
be the starting pitcher for the Dodgers. He's busially warming

(01:33):
up for that familiar number thirteen on the back of
his home white uniform, and Tommy burn the strong armed,
stout hearted left hander, is getting ready for the Yankis.
The first two games have had unprecedentedly efficient pitching, and
you all know that they've all been one to nothing
ball games, and we've only had a one inning relief job.

(01:57):
In other words, out of four starters, three of them
will complete, the other one went eight innings only an
aggregate of two runs. The Brooklyn pitchers have given up
no bases on balls in the two games, so the
headline has been pitching. First, it was Ali Raddles, on
the strength of Tommy Hendrix's ninth inning home run, winning
the first game and beating Don Newcomb for Brooklyn. Yesterday

(02:19):
it was pretcher Row who lasted made a second inning,
one run stand up and beat Vic Rashi and Joe
Page pitched the finalanding of relief for the only relief assignment.
So pitching is the story. However, neither one of these
two pitches today is rated primarily as a control pitcher.
Both walk a great many men. Branco for Brooklyn a
right hander, and vern a left hand of for in

(02:40):
New York. In the regular season, Tommy Burn won fifteen
and lost seven. Wildness was the thing that plagued him
more than opposing hitters. He is a hood ball, fast
ball pitcher with a solid curve, and he changes once
in a while. Branker one thirteen, the number that matches
his new more that he wears, lost five. And Ralph

(03:04):
had sort of an in and out season. First he
had armed trouble and then he was wild too and
throw a lot of home run balls. So the expectancy
is that we will have scoring today and certainly based
on balls. The umpires are coming onto the scene right now.
There's a little meeting there in the brook And bench.
Some of the umpires visiting will manager Bird Shotton and
they sort of grinning. Apparently there's some little joke between him.

(03:28):
The crowd is all here. We checked with business manager
Jack Collins at the Dodgers, and we can tell you
right now the attendance will be between thirty a round
around thirty four thousand. For this reason, they are about
thirty two thousand reserve seats. And that thirty two thousand said,
not thirty two thousand reserve seats, thirty two thousand seats.

(03:48):
Of course, that includes the beaches. The breaches were closed
off at ten minutes of eleven this morning, about two
hours ago. And there will be twenty five hundred standing
room seats. So that's all the standing room tickets. So
that is the crowd, and that's all there is to that.
Now I'll go down the batting orders for you. As

(04:09):
the series stands locked to the Game of Peace. For
the Yankees, it is result all leading off at short.
Each manager has seen his batting order quite a bit. Today.
Razuto leads off as usual and Henrick is usual as
hitting number two and playing at first base. Barron, after
being out with a swollen hand yesterday, is back in
the ball game today. Barron left ten hitting catcher, Jodamangioe

(04:33):
hitting fourth and playing set of field. Bobby Brown gets
the starting nod over Billy Johnson at third base Brown
at third, also a left hand batter. Branker, right hand
is starting for Brooklyn. Woodlinger, left hand hitter, is in
left field and hitting six for the Yankees. This is
his first start. Umpart moving up to the plate now
and the batting orders will soon be presented. Mates goes

(04:56):
back to right field. Left hand hitteren Coleman and second
b hits eight, and the picture is burned the batting
order for Brooklyn. Reese retains the leadoff spot and playing
at short stop. Eddie Mixes, a right hand hit him
with the left handed starting for the Yankees for the
first time in the series. Mixes starts at third. Carl

(05:19):
Farrello is hitting third and is back in right field
and reports to managers shot In that he feels a
great deal better. He has a growing injury, you know
that kept him out of the starting line up yesterday,
hitting four. Jackie Robinson, the girl Hodges the first basement,
is batting fifth. Louis Olmo, who finished in left field yesterday,
is starting there today for Brooklyn, hitting six. Snyder in

(05:43):
center field is batting seven, Campanella catching and hitting eight,
and the pitcher is Ralph Ranker. Now the pop public address.
Announcer is handing out the batting orders to the spectators
here in the ballpark. Both pitchers continue working. These six

(06:04):
umpires are up there, case is tangled. The manager of
the Yankees is up there to present his batting order.
Captain Louise, who brings the book and list up to
these pregame meetings, has not yet come out of the books,
and dugout. I was talking to our manager Stingle, and
I asked him. I said, Casey, this ballpark he votes
many memories for you, doesn't it. He said, yes, this

(06:27):
ballpark here Brooklyn, he votes memories from me from the
time that this park was first open for a professional
game through the preseason exhibition game. And he says, oddly
enough with the New York Yankee I was then back
in nineteen thirteen, I was then a member of the
Brooklyn team. And he said, all of the ballplayers in
nineteen thirteen thought that this was the last word in

(06:49):
baseball park and that the marble rotunder was well the
most spectacular thing that ever would be. So time Lilli changes.
And that brought back to mind that Charlie Abbotts back
in those days when people accused him of having too
fancy A park used to say that baseball was only

(07:09):
in its infancy, and judging by the way the childs
are swelling in attendance, etc. I guess the game is
still in its infancy. Now we have Peloris coming up
with the book combatting Order, the ground rules are being discussed,
the six up fires and their working rotation art Pasarella.
The American League will be back of the plate on

(07:30):
balls and stripes, blue jorder of the National League staff
at first base L Hubbard of the American League staff
will be at second, and beings written of the National
League will be at third. In the left field corner
National Leagueunpy George Barb and in the right field corner
American leagun fire Ed Hurley. Now, with the scene shifting

(07:54):
over to the National League Park, there is a change
in baseball, but it is not as much of a
change as you might think. The last two days at
Yankee Stadium, it's an American League park. The base balls
were stamped with President Will Harridge's signature, and they were
stamped for the American League and the balls that will
be used today and for the next two games here

(08:14):
at Torooking, the National League Park stamp with President Ford
Pricks signature and the insignia of the National League. But
spawling makes them both, makes them on the same machines,
and there is no difference between them, no difference at all.
Other words, one is just the same as the other.

(08:35):
The two starting pitchers that tend to burn for the
invading Yankees here at Evitsfield, Brooklyn and right hand raft
Branker both continued calling along. There was a very significant
ceremony before the ball game, and that was a ceremony
in which Commissioner Chandler presented a huge banner, a huge
banner to the American Legion Junior Baseball team of Oakland, California,

(08:59):
represent Post number three thirty seven, the team that won
the nineteen forty nine American Legion Junior Baseball National Championship.
And they've been brought here as a body, all the
way from Oakland out on the Pacific coast, and don't
you know that bunch of boys is really having a time.
And the Commissioner gave him a great, big banner. Man,
that's some treasure. And it's interesting to note too that

(09:20):
twenty seven of the fifty players certified for this World
Series back Commister Chandler are graduates of American Legion Junior Baseball,
sixteen ex Legion stars with the Yankees and eleven with
the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now we're going to have the ceremonies

(09:41):
instant to the throwing out of the first ball. There's
Commissioner Chandel over there in his box, which is just
on the first base side, and he has with him
a youngster who's just glinning so hard that I don't
think he's been able to say a word for a
couple of hours. Arthur C. Sweeney, thirteen years old. He's
a Brooklyn boy, and he was a victim of all
this year, and he has recovered beautifully. And there is

(10:04):
Commission Chandler shaking hands with Bar President John Cashmore, John
Cashmore stepping aside for this youngster. Of course, everybody steps
aside for kids, for people who are in trouble, and
especially for the fine cooperation with the National Foundation for
infantil Paralysis. So Office Sweeney in just a second will
take the ball from Bar President cash Moore, and standing

(10:27):
shoulder to shoulder with Commissioner Chandler, will fire that ball
out towards the mount and then the ball game will
be on its way, folks. To some of us, this
month of October means the World Series, in the beginning
of football, and others it means the start of the
hunting season. But to all of us, it usheres in
the annual drive on behalf of America's community chests. The

(10:49):
Community Chest means many campaigns in one. It represents the
biggest federation of community services and givers in the world.
Or if not for this once a year campaign, each
of more than fourteen thousand Red Feather agency units in
it would have to conduct a separate appeal for funds.
So when the community chess worker in your town calls

(11:09):
for you make a real worthwhile contribution. There are various
payment plans, so pledge now and pay as you can
during the year. The round rules are still being discussed.
We will check the batting orders for you in case
you just joined us on this Chillette broadcast just before
Game three of the nineteen forty nine World Series for

(11:31):
the Yankees, Risuto at short, Henry at first base, barre
Is catching Domaggio in Seller hitting fourth, Bobby Brown at third,
Jean woodling and left, fifth Mapes and right Jerry Coleman
the second baseman, and the pitcher is Tommy Burne. The

(11:51):
batting order for the Dodgers Reese at short, Mixes at third,
Ferrello in right, Robinson at second hitting, four Hadders at first,
Alm in left, Snyder in Sena Campanella catching, and the
pitcher is Branker. The discussion incident to ground rules at

(12:13):
this park, and of course Thingle is no stranger to
this ballpark. Casey was as a player here on the
first Brooklyn team to play in Ebbitsfield back in nineteen thirteen,
played for many years, was a member of the Brooklyn
Punnitt winning team of nineteen sixteen, which is being honored
by being guests the President branch Rickey and the Brooklyn
Dodgers at this World Series, and all of them that

(12:34):
were alive were brought in at the expense of the Dodgers,
and tonight there to be given a special banquet, and
Casey Stengel says, sure he's gonna attend. He remembers that
a nineteen sixteen Punnitt was almighty, a hard one to win,
and he wants to be with those old friends for
this evening. And of course Thingle managed here in Ebbitts Field.

(12:54):
So well, this is the ballpark too. You know the
case he walked up the home plate one afternoon, lifted
his captain a spot flew out and the case ist
angle has had as much as any man that we
know in setting the tradition that anything can and probably
will happen at Ebbitsfield. Yeah, there's a quick description of

(13:16):
the ballpark for you. Now. Right field is the famous
wall here at Bruklyn. It is two hundred and ninety
seven feet down the right field line. It falls away
sharply to wear. In right center field it is three
hundred and ninety five. That right field wall is forty
feet high. It's a twenty feet concrete wall. Were an
additional twenty feet up screen paneling on top of it.
And the scoreboard is stuck out in front of the

(13:38):
concrete and the wire fence in right center field, and
you have any number of angles. The concrete wall does
not go straight up and down. It goes up for
the slant from the bottom and then is straight up
and down halfway up, in other words, ten feet off
the ground. There are three different angles where the scoreboard intersex.
So anybody who has played baseball will tell you that

(13:59):
the right field wall here with its mini angles, is
the most difficult single outfield piece of passage in any
of the major league parks. Centerfield is three hundred and
ninety three feet in left center field three hundred and
fifty one in the left field corner three hundred and
forty eight feet, So this is a left hand hitter's

(14:21):
ball park. The stands at double duck here at Brooklyn,
all the way from right center field back around behind
left behind home plate into the right field corner. There
are no seats at all that is on the wall
and straightaway right field, and our friends will pause ten
seconds for station identification. This is the mutual broadcasting system.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Here the World Series exclusively on WR seven to ten.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
See the World Series.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
On WR TV Channel nine WR and WR FM, New York.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
Back at Ebbsfield and the booking club goes out to
take the field. We will have the national anthem in
just a moment, played in song by Miss Ladus Gudding
at the console of the electric organ. She has an
odd distinction. She is one of the few women who
has a real major league job in sports. She entertains

(15:19):
here at Ebitts Field and at Madison Square Gardens. So
now miss Gudding is being announced and we will have
the national anthem. We would like to add one more

(16:55):
note before we turned the microphone orber to uh No Alan,
and that is that we are very happy to see
down in the Yankee Box if Missus Casey's Stingle is
sitting down there, because they add to the walls of
the Yankee Manager. Missus Stingle was quite sick last evening,
but we are glad that it was temporary because you
can imagine how Casey would have felt if his wife

(17:17):
had been unable to be out here at the ballpark today.
So on the overcast skies, but with no prediction of rain,
although you sort of feel it in the air, the
ball game is ready to go. Big Branker's on the mound,
and here at the microphone. Mel Allen, who has done
such a great job in the field of sports broadcasting,

(17:37):
has lent it and all of us in it much distinction. Well,
hello there, everybody, Thank you very much for ed. This
program comes to you by authority of the Commissioner of Baseball.
It's intended only for the private use of our audience.
Any publication or a reproduction of this program, and commercial
use of the program is prohibited, and so we're all

(17:57):
set to go. As Ralph Brankle, the twenty three year
old right hander from Mount Vernam, New York, who stands
six foot two ways around one hundred and eighty five,
is all set to compete in his second World Series.
He worked twice in nineteen forty seven. He won, won
and lost one. He opened the World Series for the Dodgers,
was beaten by speck Shay five to three. But he's
all setting out to go against Phil Rizzuto. As the

(18:19):
Yankee shortstop, a right hand hitter steps in the hitting position.
Chokes has batted a couple of inches. You got Eddie
mixus in close. It's third. TV Reese in the stepfers
over toward third. In comes the first pitch of the
ball game, swung on, PopEd up into the air file
off of the right of the play campanella. After it
can't get it, it's out of play into the air
for day, so strike one. As we're underway in the
third game of the Fall Classic Baseball, people glower around

(18:45):
Charlie Grimm and Frankie Prisher here which we look about
Ralph frank looking in the Guinny signs and Campanella outfield
around toward left. In comes the pitcher. Rozuto takes strike
to Paul a fresh ball over the outside corner. Knee
hive Art Passeral of the American League calling balls and strikes.
Lou Jeorde of the National League at first, Cal Hubbard
the American League at second, Beans Rid of the National

(19:07):
League ats third. Now Ralph Frank of the right hander
throws Rozuto's takes high and insign for ball one. The
count is one and two. Ed Hurley is the American
League station down the right field line. George bar of
the National League down the left field line. Brank of
getting sent Rozuto in close to the plate up in
front of the banner's box deep at third now Is

(19:28):
mixes with two strikes on the scooter, in comes the pitch,
Phil swings and sends a drive.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
Down the right field line.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
Is gonna go foul and out of play, missing the
wall by about ten feet and file by about twenty five.
Luis rather Carl Ferrello, playing right field, raced over to
get the ball, but of course couldn't. Got Louis Almo
and left Duke Snyder and center Ferrello and right Jackie
Robinson is about four strians to the right of second

(19:53):
base and a step Hodges in half way at first,
five feet off the line. Ralph Frank at the right hander,
throws Rozuto the swings and sends a ground ball to
third up with his mix Is going to his left
to throw the Hodges in time, and there's one away.
Phil Rozuto grounds out Mixus to Hodges. A ground ball
hit into the hole between third and short and not
too hard, giving Mixus a chance to flash to his

(20:16):
left come up with it with the Reese backing him up.
And now here's Tommy Henrick getting a hand as he
is announced.

Speaker 3 (20:24):
Left hand.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Matter stands deep in the batter's box, apparently close to
the plate. Not too close to it, however, Brank his
first pitch to Tommy's right over for calls. Frank fastball,
got plenty of the inside part of the plate and
above the knees. Frank Prossetti coaching their third base. Bill
Dicki hit first for New York, Mixes about twelve feet
off the third baseline, rees over towards second, in comes

(20:44):
the pitch inside and low for the ball and the
count is even up at one and one. Jackie Robinson
that have born almost halfway between first and second back
on the end of the outfield grass the outfield around
toward right and deep in center and right with Almo
looking for Henrik perhaps to slash toward left, he's over
toward left center a bit the pitch. It's strike call
over the outside corner and it's a one to two count.

(21:07):
Now on Henrick. Tommy's starting to cut at that ball.
It was taking off and he thought it might go
wind to the plate, but it didn't. Roy Campanella picks
up a plot of dirt off of the left the
plate tosses it away in the direction of Jogi Barrow,
who's in the batter's circle. One out, no money, on
top of the first inning rank of pitches. Henrik swings
and grounds one down. The first Hodges up with it,

(21:27):
runs to the bargut runs Hendrick in their two away
the hard ground ball right at Gil Hodges and now
the two down up comes Jogi Barraw Larry Barraw from
Saint Louis, Missouri, who had the distinction in this ballpark
two years ago of hitting a pinch hit home run

(21:49):
over the right center field screen, Yogi playing with that
swollen left hand. Out fielding fields set up the same
for barras for Henrick. Big round frank of the right
handers into the wind up around comes the arm the
pitch curve swung on a ground ball foule down the
first baseline and gloved by Hodge's three feet foule. He
whips it around to Robinson as the ball goes around

(22:10):
the infield. Two men down top of the first dunning
and the thousands here wondering, of course, whether we will
have a reproduction today of the first two games of
the series played at the stadium. Both pitchers battles two
one nothing ball games, the teams dividing them one strike
to count on. Barra frank of pitches change up in

(22:31):
its high and outside ball one. It took a little
bit off of a fastball, one ball, one strike. When
Red told you about Casey stangle in this ball park
years ago, taking off his cap letting a sparofly out
reminded me of another story I'll tell you about. In
a moment, Barra swings and files it off to the
left of the screen. There were reports after Hendrix's homer
to win the first game of the ninth inning one

(22:52):
to nothing. That that was the first time that it
had ever happened. It was the first time it had
happened to make a one nothing victory in the World
Series in a ninth inning stingle where the Giants had
beaten the Yankees with an inside the park homer one nothing,
but that occurred in the seventh inning. The one two
pitch swung on a drive foul down the right feel line,
going out of play, and when Casey hit that ball

(23:13):
at Yankee Stadium and inside the park homer, he lost
his shoe rounding second base and continued to circle the
bases with one shoe on and one off. One ball,
two strikes, two outs, top of the personning, no score,
nobody on base. Francis studies Campanella, sign Roy and a

(23:34):
cross behind that plate, giving the pitcher a good target.
The Dodger right hander delivers, and Barra swings and drives
another one file down the right steel line. This went
into the upper deck, swung on a curveball. Throughout the year,
Yogi hits more foul home runs than any other member
of the Yankee ball club, and perhaps more than a

(23:55):
lot of ball players a lot of clubs. In other words,
he pulls very sharply and he hit a million of
them just foul into the right field stands. Franker all
set the one two pitch and barrow swings, and missus Franktory.

Speaker 3 (24:13):
Jot him out on the highest class.

Speaker 1 (24:15):
Ball that took off outside. No runs, no hits, no horrors,
and nobody left on. And the score at thend of
the first half of the first inning is New York
nothing Brooklyn nothing you know. For eleven years, Jellette has
broadcast the series and other sports classics for you fans.
We know you enjoy these events. Yes, and thanks to

(24:36):

styley styrene travel case. This one piece Gellett razor changes

(24:57):
you get a handy Gellette dispenser holding ten Gellette blue blades,

this outstanding dollar seventy five value is priced at only
one dollar. Yes, only one dollar. So for the shaving

(25:18):
by of the year, get Gillett's World Series Razor set.
It's a beauty and a bargain. Last half of the
first inning, the Dodgers sending up Pee Rees, Eddie Mixus,
and Carl Farrello against the left handed slants of Tommy Byrne.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, currently resides in wake Forest, North Carolina.

(25:41):
You went to wake Forest, as did Race Carborough, Washington
Senator pitcher. They were teammates down there. Tommy Byrne represents,
in a manner of speaking, a an enigma to Casey
Stangle and to baseball observers. He has some of the
best stuff any pitcher has in baseball, but his problem

(26:01):
always has been controlling it.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
He frequently will.

Speaker 1 (26:05):
Pitch a game in which he'll walk anywhere from six
to ten men or more and yet keep the opposition
from scoring. On the other hand, there have been times
his wireless his costume ball games, and so we're all
set to go, and you never know just how Tommy
burn will go. Generally, he has most of his wildest
problems in the first inning, which has caused manages to

(26:28):
wonder whether or not Tommy should have warm up a
little longer than the usual fifteen minutes allotted for it.
They've tried that, but that hasn't worked. Here's Pev Reese
leading off, right hand hitter, left handed, Tommy burn into
the wind up, in comes the pitch handed, is in
there for a call strike. You've got Bobby Brown playing
third base today, and he's in close in the event
of a bunt by Rees. You've got Geene woodling left

(26:51):
and Cliff Mapes and right. Yankee changes from the first
two games. Incomes the delivery and it's outside and low
for a ball. One in one. Burne has a fastball
that's alive. He's got a sweeping curve, and he's got
a fast breaking curve. The outfield playing Reese toward left

(27:11):
in the center and left with Mapes pullover in the
right center. A bit incomes your delivery swung on him.
Missed strike to Rees. Gave it a good cut one ball,
two strikes the count on Peewee. Tommy Byrne, despite his wildness,
has through the course of this year in winning fifteen
games and losing seven. Won several key games for the

(27:33):
Yankees and their battle for the pennant. Just when they
had appeared to be in the throws of a losing slump,
he would come along and win a key game for them,
such as against Cleveland or one of the top teams
that the Yankees had to be. Now the delivery is insider,
he said, hit him. I believe it hit him on
the leg. Is that ball broke way in on him?
He did. He gets up and he shuts on down

(27:55):
the first with a one to two count on Reese
Burned whipped a terrifically breaking curveball inside, but it broke
so far end that Reese couldn't even get out of
the way of it. He hit him on the right
ankle or just above the right ankle, and time has

(28:15):
been called. While he trots up and down the line
beyond first base toward right to take the sting out
of it and also the possibility of getting that blood
circling around in there so he can run. Jake Pitler,

(28:35):
coaching that first base, is talking to him. Pee Wee
says he's going to be all right. Meantime, Tommy is
throwing a couple into Larry Barrow and time is back
in and into the Clayton now steps Eddie Mixes bats
him right handed, replacing Spider George's the third to day
with a left hander going for New York, and so
Tommy Burns wireless immediately comes into the spotlight ahead of

(29:00):
the first hitter he hit him. So Rees moves off
first the stretch by Tommy Burne at check of the runner.
In comes the pitch and it is a bunt foul
off to the left of the plate, out of play
into the stands to the left of our mutual and
Gillette broadcasting booth, which is located directly back of home plate.

(29:21):
One strike the count on Eddie Mix's Carl Parrello's on deck.
Mixus is almost a local boy. He's from Burlington, New Jersey.
Stands deep in the batter's box, slightly open stance in
close to the plate, holds the bat just short of

(29:43):
the end of the handle. Brown in close at third.
Here's your pitch. Mixes takes outside for the ball. He
did not indicate that he was going to bunt that time.
Evidently bird shot and took the bunt sign off. Now
he can just as quickly put it back on the
Bobby Brown is still in close a third Risudos in
half wait short three strikes to the left of second
Coleman same distance to the right of the bag, and

(30:04):
in halfway Henry Coling against Reese, who takes a good
lead to stretch by Burn. A look and the pitch
end of the plate outside ball two two and one.
Two balls one strike Tommy Byrne now forcing himself a
little bit after having hit Reese. He has a problem
of his own mentally, and that he's thinking about his wildness.

(30:27):
Two balls, one strike. Burn all said a look at
Reese leading off first and the pitch to Mixes outside
for ball three three and one. Now Jerry Coleman tries
to send him second base to talk to Burn. No
activity in the Yankee bullpen is yet. Coleman talking to Tommy.

(30:53):
You've got Carl Perello on deck and Jackie Robinson to
follow top half of rather the last half of the
first inning, no score Tomp the order for Brooklyn Reese
on first hip by a pitch ball the count Greeen
one on Eddie Mixes. Burn takes his stretch Reese for
the lead, the delivery right in there for call strike

(31:13):
two bumped a fastball through there, Mixer steps out of
the batter's box just for a moment, eyes back in
mix His hind foot is half out of the back
restraining line of the batter's box. It's a violation that's
often most of the time. Overlook, we're ready for the

(31:36):
payoff pitch. There goes Reese, the pitcher swung on to
high pop up all to the left for the plate.
Barress stumbles as he starts back for the ball, getting
toward the dugout for the Yankees and makes the catch,
and Race starts to second base. There's a throat of
Colman and Ree says double up at second base.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
And Art Passarella just ran over to the.

Speaker 1 (32:07):
Yankee dugout and warned Casey Staningle had come out of
the Yankee dugout on to the playing area proper to
coach Barra on the ball, and Passarella warned him. But
it was a daring gambled by Peewee, and an alert
play and a good play by Yogi to double up
Race at second and they're two down. And here's Carl Parello,

(32:28):
a right hand hitter, and the pitch swung on a
drive to Deprice center field, the major racing bank toward
the wall and leaps in the majors there undred and
he makes the catch. No runs for Brooklyn, no hits,
no Yankee eras nobody left on base. And so we've
had loud excitement already in the opening inning, and it

(32:51):
may be a carbinger of things to come in this
third game of the World Series. So in the last
half of the first inning, after was hit by the
pitch ball Nix's with a three to one count on him,
took the next pitch for three and two and then
hit a high foul pop up off to the left
of the plate that Yogi Barra caught after stumbling starting back.

(33:14):
Caught it near the Yankee dugout and Pee Wee tagged
up at first and broke for second, with Barra having
his back to the play, thinking he might get the jump,
thinking perhaps with Barra wouldn't figure him to be going,
but Yogi whorld and of course the boys on the
bench Holliday Yogi to tell him and through his throw
was not too true. It is on the shortstop side

(33:35):
of second, but Jerry Coleman was there to take it
and had plenty of time to reach for it and
then come back and tag rees out sliding in for
the double play. So as we go to the top
of the second and him on the scoreless game, upsteps
Joe Demango. Joe Demanjo leads off with Bobby Brown and

(33:58):
Jean woodn'ting to follow. Ralph Frankel on the hill. I'll
feel around toward left end, feel around toward third to
the pitch right over for a call strike, fastball overhand,
fastball mixes deep at third near the line, about two
feet off of it. TV Reese back on the edge

(34:20):
of the left field grass and over toward the third
base hole with Robinson three stripes to the right of second.
Branca throws low outside for a ball one and one,
one ball, one strike. The Dodgers have certainly got a
good book on the Yankees, that is to say, they
have scouted them well. Scouting is permitted in baseball, just
as it is in football. One ball, one strike. Ralph

(34:44):
Frankel works and the pitch curb swung on and miss
the strike. Two A good swing, a good hook, one
into the count. The man Joe has had only one
hit in the series, and that was with the Boys
in the trade term. A Bleeder as he beat out
a slow roller in the night anything yesterday, rank ahead

(35:04):
of the hitter and the one two pitch on its
way demand swings and missus quick three Joe Demandoe went
down swinging on him inside fastball and now coming up
there is Bobbie Brown. Bonny Brown. Bobby batsim left handed.

(35:28):
He had a one thousand batting average for World Series
play until he pinched it yesterday and struck out. In
nineteen forty seven. He hit every time that he UH
was charged with the time at bat brank his first
pitcher swung on slooping fly ball out in the short
center going out as Robinson income Snyder's Jackie out there
makes the catch and short center for out number two

(35:52):
with two down. The batter is Jeene Woodling.

Speaker 4 (35:57):
Gems.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
Jean Woodland came up from San Francisco to the Yankees
this year after having UH had brief trials with Cleveland
and Pittsburgh. He led the Cific Coast League in hitting
last year with a three eighty five average. Boar from Akron,
Ohio stands in close to the plate, deep in the
batter's box, peeked together jokes the bat just about an

(36:18):
inch in comes the pitch and it's a little inside
ball one. They play Woodling toward right in center and
right straight away in left the big gap and left center.
Woodland slices he can pull third basement. Aie mixes in
halfway on the skin part of the infield A dozen
feed off the line. Branca throws. The pitch is right
over for a call strike a fastball, and the count
is even up at one and one. Reese is about

(36:41):
three strides to the left of second end. Two steps
Jackie Robinson halfway between first and second, back on the
edge of the right field grass, with Gill Hodges deep
and three feet off the first base line. Win and
one on the count. Two men out top. The second inning,
no score. Branca's pitch strike Gus call a fast all
over an inside corner back Woodling away, but the pitch

(37:02):
stayed right in there a one to two count on.
Jane Cliff Mapes on deck. Frank Rossetti coaching their third
hollering something up to Woodley. Branki gets he signed from Campanella,
starts the wind up around, comes the right arm the

(37:22):
pitch curve, and it's outside ball two. It was a beauty,
just missed art passer Ella calling balls and strikes, or
the of the American League, Lou Jord of the National
League on firing at first, caliberd of the American League
at second, Beans Ridden of the National League at third,

(37:43):
George Bar the National League down the left Bie line,
and Ed Hurley the American League down the right fe line.
And now branc Is two two pitch to Woodley swung
on to high pop up foul off back of third.
Mixus waves Campanella off and he's under it and makes
the catch. One thing files out to Mixes. No runs,

(38:05):
no hits, no errors. Nobody left on and we move
right along. You know, watching today's game with us here
in the broadcasting booth is a ballplayer. You all know,
Birdie Tebbitts, aggressive receiver for the Boston Red Sox. Birdie,
tell the folks why you prefer Gellette blue blades. That's
a sin smell, the only kind of give me a

(38:25):
decent shave. How do you account for that? Well, they're
shopper than a hound's tooth, and they don't break down
like other blades. Do you buy them in the Gellette dispenser?
Of course, naturally it costs nothing extra and is mighty handy. Yes, fans,
it pays to ask for Gelett blue blades ten or
twenty at a time, and the modern Gellette dispenser that
zips them out unwrapped. You save time, save fuss, and

(38:49):
change blades. Presto, look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp. Use
Gellette blue blades for the sharpest edges ever. Home. Ready
now for the last half of the second inning, nothing
and nothing, And so far this has been primarily a
goose egg series and in red well, well, you've had

(39:15):
only two runs and two ball games and one and
a half innings. I don't believe they run out of
goosex for the scoreboard, are you? I believe they got
enough out there the pitch that's going to continue to
deal them out. Jackie Robinson leads off for the Dodgers
in the last half of the second Gil Hodges and
Louis all moo apollow Phil Rozutohn or something over there

(39:38):
to Tommy burn As Tommy went to the Rawsen bag.
The left hander sets to work on Big Jackie right
hand hitter Brown in close at third. In the event
of the bun, Tommy Burns pitch to Robinson swung on
some high fly ball out into short ride. As a

(39:59):
matter of fact, the winners holding it up in Coleman,
back of Henrick makes the catch a step on the
skin part of the infield. As the ball started out,
it looked as if it was going to go out
into short right mate started in, but the wind which
is blowing in from right field and outsoor left, held
it up and Coleman took it right in behind Henry.
So with the one down, up comes Gale Hodges bats.

(40:19):
I'm right handed outfielders around toward left. Hodges drove in
the winning run for the Dodgers yesterday, drove in Jackie Robinson,
who had doubled in that inning. Now the pitch strike
call over the outside corner Kern south part of fastball
let Nick the outside part of the play just above
the knees to Big Gil Brown deep at third or

(40:43):
halfway back near the line. In comes the pitch and
it's way outside for the ball. One in one. Phil
Rozuto is not too far over into the third base hole,
but pretty close to it. Jerry Coleman only about two
strides to the right of second Henry ten feet off
first base in halfway on the skin part of the infield.

(41:03):
In comes the pitch, Hodges take strike called as Tommy
Byrne whipped a curve over the outside corner, so one
two cound the ale, Hodges one out. Last half the
second inning, no score. Milton Stock, coaching at third for
the Dodgers, cups his hands over his mouth. Holler's words
of encouragement up to big Gill, who has come along

(41:25):
fast in his development as a first baseman. In comes
the pitch curve swung on popped up into the air
off to the left of the plate. Yogi Berra goes
over it and makes the catch that brings up Now

(41:49):
Louis Almo Hodges piles out to Barra off to the
left of home plate, now only almost steps in right
hand hitter Tommy Burns first pitch to him is low

(42:13):
ball one. We've had some excellent umpiring in the series.
Casey's Stingle comes to the front of the Yankee dug
out and motions something out there to Woodling. Jean hasn't
seen him. Burn delivers almost started to swing, held up
as the pitch stayed inside around the letters. For ball two,
and Alice Stangle is back out of the dug out.
He's trying to get somebody's attention. He's getting Brown's attention.

(42:36):
Now he's got Woodling's eye, and Woodling is moving more
over toward left center. The mad Joe's a step or
two over toward right center, and mate's almost straight away
and right the two nothing pitch to Almo right over
for a call, strike two and one. Milton Stock with
a gesture of the hands, indicates to Almo, just meet

(42:58):
the ball. It's a two to one count on the
right hand hitter. Two outs last the second inning a
scoreless ball game, Duke Snyder's on deck. Tommy burn comes
in with the pitch and it is swung on, popped
up into the air, off to the right of the paper.
It's going to come back out of play just above

(43:18):
our heads. Two to the count. Two balls, two strikes,
two outs, ending number two each team looking for win
number two in this series. Tommy Burn, a slow worker,
perhaps have to cover that new ball. Things are fairly

(43:39):
quiet the moment, as you would expect in a scoreless ballgame,
and Big Hank Greenberg sitting behind Bill Beck eating himself
a hot dog. All right, Tommy Burns set to go again.
In comes the pitch and it is swung on a
slow roller hit down tow third Bobby Brown's charge it

(44:00):
up with it fires over to Henry Kennedy is in.

Speaker 3 (44:02):
Time for the out.

Speaker 1 (44:03):
A close play, no runs, no hits, no errors, nobody
left on Almo topped the pitch, it rolls slowly down.
Third Brown charged it and fired Almo out on a
very close play, one of those pat patter bang bang plays,
as they say in the trade. And thus at the
end of two innings you have another scoreless ball game.

(44:24):
The Yankees have been three up and three down. The
Dodgers have only had six batters, but they've had one
on Teewee Reese who was hit by a pitch ball
but immediately was doubled up by the next hitter. This
is Mel Allen with Red Farmer bringing you the World
Series in behalf of the g Leet Safety Razor Company,

(44:47):
who are proud to bring it to you for the
eleventh consecutive year, and Jim Britt doing the telecast of
the World Series games, and Renee Canna's ares beaming it
to the Latin American countries and a broadcast going around
the world through the shortwave facilities of the Armed Forces
Radio service. Cliff Mapes looks at a strike, a fastball

(45:08):
fired through there by Ralph Franco, who wins the number
thirteen on his uniform. But he's not superstitious. As a
matter of fact, he's one of thirteen children. Strong arm,
broad shouldered, right hander fires away. Mapes takes inside the
other fastman ball won one in one. Brank had joined
the didege your organization in nineteen forty three. Best years

(45:31):
in nineteen forty seven, when he won twenty one ball
games went to New York University. One ball, one strike.
Mixes is wide. A third in comes the pitch. Mapes
takes a curve that's high ball two two and one
two balls one strike. It's an overcast day, is red

(45:52):
toty a while ago. For those of you may have
tuned in late. We repeat it no immediate threat of brain. However,
the wind is blown out toward left in from right now.
The delivery swung on file tip then into the mete
of campanilo for strength two to two. Cliff Mapes is
a boy that has tremendous power. He also has definite

(46:13):
weaknesses at the plate and that picture's capitalize on. But
if they make one mistake. He's got so much power
he can hurt you. Rank is two to two, delivery
on its way, and Mates swings and file tips had
dropped by Campanella and Mapes is alive. That's a rough

(46:37):
job back of that plate. When we say that the
catchers dropped the third file tip, it's not meant in
any sense of criticism of the backstop. Those balls come
spinning back there, and they're rough. Even if you've got
a mask and protect on as they do have, it's
still rough the handle. Now the delivery curve his low
inside ball three full count island Mapes. This is the

(47:02):
first batter on which branc has gone to a three
to two count. His control has been superb up to
now no score on top of the third inning and
the payoff pitch on its way, Mapes takes high ball
four and he's on. And that is the first base
on balls given up by a Brooklyn pitcher in this series.

(47:23):
Number forty Hill Jerry Coleman, neither Don Ucum nor Preacher
Row gave up a walk. Mapes gets the first walk
issued in the series by a Brooklyn pitcher, and now
coming to bat is Jerry Coleman Pride of San Francisco,

(47:44):
twenty four years of age. The pitch is right in
there for a call strike. Jerry stands about six feet,
but he isn't very hefty. He only weighs around one
hundred and sixty five. Has come along marvelously, and though
he may not be the Rookie of the Year in

(48:05):
the American League, he did play good enough ball to
be in contention for that honor. Mixus is in close
at third, Mate sands the lead, Hodges holding the stretch
the pitch. Coleman swings and files it off to the
right of the plate. That's out of play, under the
roof and out of the ballpark. A two strike count
on Jerry the dodger out theield. The day consists of

(48:26):
Almo and left, Snyder and center, Perrillo and right. Mixus
is at third. As we go to the nfield, reach
short Robinson, second, Hodges, first, Campanella catching and brank of pitching.
Mixus isn't looking for the bunt. He's halfway back at
third near the line. Reese is in halfway at short,
four stripes of the left of second, Robinson halfway between
first and second, and in half way. Here's the pitch

(48:46):
swung on its high five ball, curving file back of first,
Hodges digs over near the stands, but he cannot get it.
It's out of play, the ball dropping about ten rows
in a two strike count, still on Coleman. Naturally he wouldn't,
as we go back to Mixes, would not be looking
for the bunk with two strikes on Jerry. But stranger

(49:08):
things have happened the outfield just about straight away. Coleman,
though he can pull, has for the most part this
series been hitting the right field and Carl Frailo was
stationed over toward the right field line. Now the delivery
curve is right in there is throw down a first
base Mapes just back in time. That was the third

(49:30):
strike on Coleman. We didn't have time to tell you
that it was the third win. Of course you knew
if you were following the count, because Campanella whipped a
quick throw down the Hodges trying to doublop Mapes, who
had a good lead off the bag. But Mapes got
back in time. So Coleman looks at the third strike,
beautiful curve, and that's the third strike out for Branca.
And now coming the bat is Tommy Burn. Though Burn

(49:57):
did not hit for a high average during the course
of the season, Lass he is what is generally termed
a good hitting pitcher. He's dangerous, in other words, at
the plight. He hit one ninety three, but he drove
in thirteen runs. He's kind of a guy might hit

(50:18):
the long ball for you. He might just take three
cuts and sit down the delivery right in there for
a call. Strike over that inside corner above the knees.
The outfield is shading him toward right, slightly in center
and right almost as straightaway set up. Burne hits a

(50:38):
lot down the left field line. He gets an outside
pitch and he can also pull him. Here's your delivery,
a low inside for the ball one in one. Tommy
had sixteen hits in the regular season. Four of them
were doubles and two of them tripleds. Mapes has the

(51:03):
lead Hodges holding here's your pitch, curve and it's low
inside ball two two and one. Eddie Mixes walks a
step or two from third over toward the mound to
pep up Uh Ralph Branka. Ralph Uh decides to take
a white hand chif out of his right hip pocket
and mop his face. It isn't a warm day, but
it is warm when the guy's out there throwing that ball.

(51:26):
Looking around, we see Joe Cronin, general manager of the
Red Sox, see it off the left of the Yankee
dugout there he goes Mates, the pitcher swung on a
ground ball, hit out pass promison in the right center
for a base hit. Mates round second, onest way to third.
Snyder up to the ball, hits it into Robinson and
it's a base hit for Burn. That's the Yankees first

(51:56):
hit of the ball game. They put the hit and
run on and Burn wrapped a solid base hit to
the right of second. Jackie Robinson made a beautiful backhanded
attempt to get that ball, but couldn't quite reach it.
Duke Sneyder went over into right center to grab it,
whipped his throw back to the infield, but Cliff Mates,
who was off and running, raced the third. Now Joe Hatton,

(52:19):
a left hander, begins to throw in the Dodger bullpen
as Phil Rizzutto steps up. Phil grounded the third and
the first inning. The Dodger in field is in p
play at the plate.

Speaker 3 (52:29):
Here's the pitch.

Speaker 1 (52:30):
Phil's take sin over the inside corner for calls strike.
He's started to cut but held up. His reflexes are wonderful.
He can make a move and stop right on a dime.
Mixes and Raze are almost at the edge of the
infield Grass, Robinson is not quite so close. He's halfway.
Hodges holding against burn here's your pitch. It's Bunny down
the first baseline. Here comes Mates, and the dog goes foul.

(52:54):
He attempted to squeeze Hodges broke from first toward the plate,
but allow the ball there. Old finally saw it spinning
that way. Casey's thingle comes just to the front of
the Yankee. Dug On hollers to be able to get
a piece of it. Now there's two strikes on the scooter.
Honches might have had to play at the plate had

(53:15):
the ball remained fair. Mates on third, burn On first
went out and for Ralph Brank and the Dodgers. Forrizuto
is the key man in this inning. Stretched by Ralph,
the pitch swung on to the fly ball hit out
in the right center field.

Speaker 3 (53:34):
Parilla all goes over.

Speaker 1 (53:35):
He gets hundred and makes the catch. Here's Mate tagging
up and he scores and the Yankees maid one to nothing.

Speaker 3 (53:45):
As the throw was.

Speaker 1 (53:47):
Way off on third base side of home plate. I
thought Honches going to cut it off as Tommy burn
made a break four second, but Burne, thinking they were
going to cut it off, then held up and came
back to first. So Rozudo flies out to Pirello in

(54:08):
right center and is credited with the run, batted in
as mates tagged up and scored after the catch. And
his baseball observers will tell you there again is that
base on ball isn't right?

Speaker 3 (54:21):
Red?

Speaker 1 (54:23):
Well, that's the first on that I defits, the given
up that promptly cost to Iran. And now here's Tommy Henrick,
matt left handed two down the pitch curve inside ball
one Tommy Byrne on first base. Joe Hatton continues to
throw in the bullpen. One to nothing in New York,
top of the third inning, Henrick grounded out to Hodges

(54:46):
and the first inning Gill is not holding now against Tommy,
but just in behind him. Now the delivery way inside
the Henrick ball two two nothing to count. In these
World Series game games, once a pitcher allows a runner
or two to get on, as a rule, the bullpen
becomes alive. The time is short. The best four games

(55:09):
out of seven, you're not playing one hundred and fifty four,
and you gotta throw everything you've got into each game
as much as you possibly can throw into it and
save something for the next day. Now, the delivery change
up is high and away for ball three. Two to
nothing pitch is a favorite one for a batter to
swing on, and sometimes it's a very smart pitcher changing

(55:33):
up on a fastball hitter, as Henrick is if you
can get it over. But it was high outside two
down frank are ready for the three to nothing pitch.
It is inside ball four and Tommy Byrne moves down
to second. Hendrick takes over it first as Franklin gives
up his second walk of the inning, and the batter

(55:53):
now is Jogi Berra, who struck out on the first thing.
Reese and Campanella converge at the mound to talk to
Brancon to siddle him down. And so we are beginning
to get more action in this third game of the
World Series than has been customary so far. That is,
more concentrated action. Had scattered explosions here there in the

(56:18):
first two games. Yogi Berra steps in Burne moves off
second Henrick off first, two down one end top of
the third inning, one to nothing, New York outfield toward
right and center and right straight away almost in the
left big gamp and left center. Mixes halfway back at third,
ten feet off the line, reesind couple of steps three
strands of the left the second. The pitch is inside
ball one the yogi Jackie Robinson deep at second, halfway

(56:41):
between the first and second bases, with Hodges deep near
the line. The wind remembers blowing away from right out
toward left Bara left hand pull hitter awaits the pitch
from bracket cafanell and the cross gives a brack of
the sign. One run in top of the third inning,
two down, two New York. Burne moves off second base.

(57:02):
Henry Corf, first, stretched by a brack, incomes the pitch,
barrel swings and sense pop up right out to the
second of Robinson. He takes it for the out and
the ending is over. Sad ball had Jackie, who momentarily,
as it did most of us, as it started out,
it looked as if it might go further. Jackie took
a step out toward right the field and stopped, then
came in for the ball. It was not hit as
hard or as well as it appeared. One run for

(57:24):
New York, one hit, no Dodger hurs, two men left
on for the Yankees, and the score at the end
of two and a half innings, New York won Brooklyn nothing.
Birdie Tebbitts of the Boston Red Sox gave it to
you straight when he said that Gellette Blue blades are
sharper than all get out and don't break down like
other blades do. Yes, fans, Gellette Blue blades are sharp,

(57:47):
plenty sharp, and half edges that stand up for one quick,
easy shave after another, so they give you better looking,
more refreshing shaves, and far more of them for your money.
By Gellette Blue Blade and the modern Gellette Dispenser. This
handy magazine deals them out unwrapped, ready for use. Much more,
it protects the blades perfectly so that they stay factory

(58:10):
sharp until used. You pay nothing extra for this convenience.
A Gellette dispenser loaded with twenty blades forty shaving edges
is ninety eight cents, with ten blades forty nine cents.
Look sharp, beel sharp, be sharp, use Gellett blue blades

(58:31):
with the sharpest edges ever honed. Last half of the
third inning, the Dodgers will come up with Duke Snyder,
Roy Campanella, and most likely Ralph Bracket see red sort
of looking down to see if there's any possibility of
anybody being around a bat rack. But Hatton is no

(58:52):
longer warming up, and it's early in the game and
only one run different, so the likelihood of Brack of
being out of there is very remote. Last of the
third Duke Snyder steps in left hand batter power hitter,

(59:21):
stands six two ways around one hundred and seventy five
in close to the plate. Left handed. Tommy Burn delivered
Snyder's takes outside for a ball, almost swung on it
boar from Compton, California, twenty three years of age. Burn

(59:42):
throws the pitches in there for a call strike side
arm pass ball, one ball, one strike on Duke Yanks
one Dodges nothing. Last half of the third inning, third
game of the World Series. Each team has won the game.
Now Tommy Burn's delivery, Snyder swings and sends a fly
ball in the left center Demand starts back and has

(01:00:03):
to come in the wind is holding up. Here comes
Whindling and Woodling makes the catch. That wind is rough
today and causes the out feelers and end feeler's little trouble.
That ball started out into left center, and Demacho had
started bank and then suddenly had to stop and start

(01:00:25):
in as the wind carried that ball away from him
and in toward the endfield. But fortunately for the Yankees,
Jean Woodling also had started for the ball and the
left feeler racing over toward left center and then made
the catch. Now here's Roy Campanella right hand batter, Burn throws.
Campanella swings bounds it down to third, two hops to
Bobby Brown. Hear the line, he firs across to Henry Kin.

(01:00:45):
Time and they're two away. Campanella smacked a hard too
hopper to Bobby Brown just inside the third baseline. Bobby
was playing it in there close and grab it to
throw him out easily. Here's it's Ralph Frankett coming to bath.
Now two up and two away. Last the third New

(01:01:07):
York one Dodger's nothing. Casey's staningle to the front of
the dug out of the Yankees, now pushing Whodling over
toward left center. More the pitch in there for a
call strike. The outfield set up is just about straight away.
Woodling was a little closer to the left field line
than Stango wanted him. Bobby Brown's about five feet off
the third base line, three steps away from the edge
of the enfield Grass or Zuto four strants the left

(01:01:30):
of second. In about two steps. Burn delivers the pitches
over for call strike two. He got Jerry Coleman four
strikes to the right of second and deepened Henrick six
or eight feet off the first base line, and he's
fairly deep there at first. Two strikes to count on Branket.
Tommy burned the left hander into the wind up, delivers
and it's swung.

Speaker 3 (01:01:48):
On it missed.

Speaker 1 (01:01:49):
Strike three. The ball dropped by Barra. He picks it up,
throws easily down to Henrick for the outer as Branco
ran it, and that's all for the Dodgers. He put
out goes two to three since Barrow dropped the third
stack gets a strikeout. However, for Burn and his first
of the ball game, no runs, no hits, no errors,
and nobody left on. Let's listen to this announcement. All

(01:02:10):
this announcements concerning the fact that a number of the
players in this World Series are boys who started out
in the American Legion baseball. At the end of three innings,
then your totals the Yankees one run, one hit, no errors,
and two left on. The Dodgers have had only one

(01:02:31):
man on base, that tee Wee Reese, who was hit
by pitch ball on the top of the first inning
and was doubled up at second base by Barra after
he had caught Mix's file pop up over toward the
Yankee dug out to the left of home plate. Now,
as we go to the top half of the fourth inning,

(01:02:51):
the announcement that is going over the public address system
concerns information already given to you by Red Barber earlier,
and so we move right along with the ballgame. Joe
Demadjo will be leading off in the top of the
fourth with Bobby Brown and Jean Woodling to follow tomorrow's game,

(01:03:15):
we'll start again at one o'clock and Jillette will be
on the air over Mutual at twelve forty five. That's
the Eastern Standard time on Sunday. However, if we might
anticipate just a bit, the game will start an hour
and five minutes later two o five. So we'd like

(01:03:36):
to tell you today so you'd be sure and remember
that on Sunday, Ralph brank Of pitches to demand Joe
swings and missus strike one. Our broadcast time on Sunday
will be at one forty five. However, Eastern Standard time
that's just for Sunday tomorrow will be on at twelve
forty five Eastern Standard time. Ralph Bankett delivers demand swings,

(01:03:58):
poules it back onto the screen. Strike two. Joe, always
a key figure, has not had a good series offensively.
He's had only one hit, a roller which he beat out.
But then it must be remembered that he actually got
out of a sick bed battling off a near attack

(01:04:18):
of virus pneumonia to finish up the season the last
two games with the Yankees, and is still not at
full strength now. The pitch high ball one, one and two.
But his mere presence in the lineup is inspirational to
his teammates, and he's always a threat. One to nothing
New York fourthening one ball two strikes on the Clipper.

(01:04:42):
Branket delivers demands swings and missus strike three. Cut hard
the curveball, and that's the second straight time Joe has
struck out. That's the fourth strikeout for Branca and in
the series four times demand Joe struck out. Struck out

(01:05:04):
once on opening a day of the series, and once
yesterday and twice today. Bobby Brown, who popped out to
Robinson and the second inning, steps in left hand. Hitter
chokes that beat Ben slide at the knees, leans from
the waist right hand or Branca throws outside ball one
one ball, no strikes, one to nothing. They were the Yankees, fourthening,

(01:05:24):
one out, nobody on. It's getting a little darker out
here right now, isn't it red? Or is it my imagination? Now?
It's getting darka mel' frond ominous looking. It might rain
before the fnon's old and wind is really whipping those
flags around out toward left from right. The pitch swung
on popped up in the air back of third Mixes
strips across the pole line under the ball and he
makes the catch. Bobby Brown files out to Eddie Mixus

(01:05:49):
about twenty five feet down the line from third base
and ten feet or so Poull with two down. Up
comes Jeane Woodland, who filed out to mixus and the
second inning and Clip Mapes is on deck. Branca studies
Campanella sign into the wind up. He throws the pitches

(01:06:13):
inside up around the letters and it's the one nothing
count on Woodling. Ralph taking his time, the mount Burner
New York rant hander into a quick wind up, throws
the pitcher curve over for a call strike. When I

(01:06:34):
say a quick wind up, Brankett doesn't take one of
those lengthy, graceful wind ups. As he stands on the
rubber he gets he signed. He quickly brings his hands
up over the head and without too much of a
wind up, comes down and throws. Now the delivery swung on.
There's a line driver right center field. Farrello racing over.
He cannot get us off the scoreboard. Woodling rounds first

(01:06:56):
heads per second. The throw comes in, sliding in safely
with a double. Jean Woodling. As race takes the throw,
Corilla is limbing. Jean Woodling lines a double off the
scoreboard in right center field. Carl Perillo, unable to go

(01:07:20):
after a ball with his usual speed because of the
growing injury he sustained before the end of the season,
limped over after the ball. However, he was high upon
the scoreboard. He couldn't have caught it anyway. Snyder converged
with him and i Hear's cliff mates, who walked in
the third inning and came on around the score on
Burns single and Rozudo's fly ball. To write, they pitched

(01:07:40):
the Cliff high ball one. They're two men away. Top
of the fourth inning. Wonder nothing New York. Woodling's double
is the Yankee second hit. Branker stretches, pitches, mate, swings
little roller. Why at first there's Hodges going over and

(01:08:02):
then he lets Robinson dud. He throws the Brancot covering
for the out, hides start over the ball, and Jackie
hollered him off. He took it, Brancot covered beautifully and
mapes his out Robinson to Branca. No runs for the Yankees,
one hit, no errors for the Dodgers, one left on
for New York. And the score at the end of
three and a half innings of play is the Yankees one,

(01:08:25):
the Dodger's nothing.

Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
Almost a million men recently bought Gellette one piece razors
on our guarantee of complete satisfaction or double their money back.
It's an amazing fact that nearly two thousand to one
preferred the razor to twice its purchase price. Yes, men,
and those are the odds that you will agree. The
Gelette one piece razor is the easiest shaving and most

(01:08:50):
convenient ever. The Gelette one piece razor changes blades instantly,
skims off stubble slick as a whistle, and rinses clean
in the jiffy. Each set includes a ten played Gellette
dispenser and an attractive serviceable travel case. See the Gellette
Super Speed set a big dollar seventy five values for

(01:09:11):
only a dollar. Look at the gold plated Gellette my
Lord two seventy five and the superb gold plated Gett
Aristocrat three seventy nine. Any one of these fine Gellette
raisers will give you matchless shaving ease and convenience. Last

(01:09:34):
half of the fourth inning, top of the order for
Brooklyn Peewee rees, Eddie Mixis and Carl Farrello, very dark
overhead Dodger fans begin to squirm and call for a
little action. Peewee hit by a pitched ball in the

(01:09:56):
first thing. The only Dodger to reach base right hand
hitter waits the delivery from Burn, and it is in
there for a call strike. As he broke off a
breaking pitch over the inside corner waist high. Bobby Brown
moves in the step at third on the grass to
tamp down some of the turf. He's in close in
the end of the bun. Burn throws, Reese swings and

(01:10:16):
sends a.

Speaker 4 (01:10:17):
Long drive to day fluff Field. It may be going going,
it is not up, and they're all.

Speaker 1 (01:10:48):
Tied up at one and one as pee wee Reese
put the slug on one of Tommy Burn's fastballs and
drove it over the three hundred and fifty one foot
side into the left field stand in the lower section,
and now here is Eddie Mixus, the right hand batter,
takes outside ball one that was the first Dodger hit

(01:11:12):
off Tommy Burn, and it's a one to one ball game.
Mixus filed out to Barrow on the first inning. Tommy
Burn south paws one in. Eddie swings and sends a
drive to deep centerfield. De Mago's out there though, and
takes it for the out. Mixes got hold of one

(01:11:33):
and drove it sharply the center but right at the
Yankee clipperd So the one down. Upsteps Carl Parrello, who
skied the center of the first inning. And as it
was a predominantly Yankee crowd at Yankee Stadium, it is
predominantly Dodger here at Ebbitts Field, and the crowd has awakened.

(01:11:54):
With Peewee Reese's terrific glass into the left field stands
left center field stands to tie up the ball game
at one and one. Carl Farrello right hand hitter Tommy Burn,
the left hander, throws the pitcher swung on line to
the left field pass down for a base hit. Woodling
goes over, cuts the ball off, whips his throw a second.
Parrello holds it first with a line single just to

(01:12:14):
the left of Bobby Brown.

Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
And now here's Jackie Robinson.

Speaker 1 (01:12:20):
There's still no accent of the Yankee bullpen. Henry walks
over to talk to Burn. Each Dodger who has come
up in listening has thanked the ball hard. The fans
are standing up to look toward the Yankee bullpen, but
the Yankee bullpen is seated and looking at the folk
standing up. But there could be a hurry call in

(01:12:42):
a moment. Every ball has been hit hard, including the
out mixes line of the center all right. Frello leads
off first. Jackie Robinson off a right hand hitter. The
pitch inside, it's a curve ball. Ball one. Robinson popped
out on the second inning to Jerry Coleman, a one

(01:13:06):
to one ball game. Last half of the fourth thing
Henrick not holding against Frella, just in behind him. Burn delivers,
Robinson takes low ball two. Jake Pittler's dancing around coaching
there at first and now there's Jim Turner, Casey Stingles,
pitching coach, signaling for action to the ballpen. A left

(01:13:29):
hander and the right hander. We'll give you their identities
in a moment as soon as they take their jackets
off and go to work. Meantime, Tommy Byrne ready for
his two nothing pitch, delivers and it is outside for
ball three. Joe Page is the Yankee left hander and
the right hander is Frett Sandford. Now Tommy Henrick moves

(01:13:49):
over first base to talk to Burn, who breethes through
the Dodger lineup for the first three innings, but starting
the fourth, the Dodgers teet off with three spanking one
of the left center field stands for a home run
to tie it up. Mixus lined out to the macho

(01:14:09):
and then Frillo lined the single to the left. And
now the count is gone to three and nothing on
Jackie Robinson, and we're ready for the three to nothing pitch,
and it is inside ball.

Speaker 3 (01:14:20):
Four and down.

Speaker 1 (01:14:21):
The second goes Forrillo. That is the first fault given
up by Burn. Frillo goes to second, Robinson the first,
and Casey Stingle comes out of the Yankee doug out.

Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
To the mind.

Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
He goes to talk to Burn and Yogi Barrab with
Gil Hodges, a power hitting right hand hitter coming up
in Louis Almo on deck. Now, Joe Page goes to
work in the bullpen areas working a left hander and
Fret Sandford, the right hander for New York. Stangle leaves
the mound, goes back to the Yankee doug out, which
is located to the left of home plate. Here at Ebbittsfield,

(01:14:59):
the Dodgers dug out to the right of home plate,
and for the first time in this series where you're
getting a lot of action, a lot of action involving
runners on and base hits.

Speaker 3 (01:15:16):
Marilla is on.

Speaker 1 (01:15:16):
Second Robinson on first, only one out, one run in last.
The fourth inning score tied one in one Id just
filed out to Barrow on the second inning, waits the
pitch from Burn. Here it is way outside ball one
one ball lost, strikes out, feeling around toward left. Tommy

(01:15:43):
checks with Yogi, Brello moves off second, Jackie Robinson off first.
Burn stretches, has a look at second. Here's the pitch,
and it's inside ball to curveball. And the streak of
wireless that you generally expect from Tommy Burn, which did

(01:16:05):
not occur early as it so frequently does, has suddenly
come here in the fourth. Now are we ready for
the two nothing pitch? Two men on first and second.
Here's the delivery outside ball three, and Burn calls Yogi
out to talk to him. Yogi just takes a step
or two out, though, and doesn't go all the way

(01:16:26):
out a three nothing count on Gil Hodges. The man
most directly responsible, however, for Burn's wireless is not Burned,
but pee wee Reese, who teed off and hit that
ball into the left field left center field stands, and
that got burned a little wary. Now the pitch over
for call strike three and one in a tight ball

(01:16:50):
game and an important ball game, when a banner suddenly
steps up and parks one on you, then you get
a little word if you're a pitcher that somebody else
will you try to be a little too careful. They
try to be careful, and you become a little too
careful and miss the corners by either a little or
a lot. Three balls, one strike on Gil Hodges, Carl

(01:17:10):
Parillo on second, Jackie Robinson on first, one out, one
d last. The fourth inning, Tommy burn with a stretcher,
look at his runner's ears the pitch. Hodges takes outside
ball four, and they're loaded up. Parillo goes the third,
Robinson the second, Hodges takes over it first, and the
banner is Louis Almo grounded out to Bobby Brown on

(01:17:34):
the second inning, and for the first time in the series,
we've got the bases loaded. Now, Casey's tangle comes out
of the Yankee dugout walk out to the mound. Casey
has his mind made up. I believe he's gonna take burnout.

(01:17:55):
I'm not certain. He took a look at the bullpen
says something you arn't passer. Casey's looking toward the Yankee bullpen.
He walks to the mound. Hendrick's standing there, and I
believe Casey's going to have the left hander, Joe Page
is going to come on. So Casey, he's not going

(01:18:19):
to play percentage and bring in Sandford to right hander
to pitch to the right handed hitting Almoh, He's going
to bring in his ace, left hander, Joe Page. Now,
of course Casey's figuring ahead a little bit. If he
had brought in Sandford, then Jean Hermansky might have been

(01:18:40):
sent up there by Bert Shotton. So Joe Page is
coming on to pitch to Louis Almo. And Joe's coming
in awful early for him, though he did come in
early last Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, the game

(01:19:00):
the Yankees had to win to stay in the pennant fight,
and he went six and two thirds innings that day
and pitched one hit ball to actually give the Yankees
a chance to win that pennant. The next day, Tommy
burn gets the hands, he leaves them out and while

(01:19:23):
we await Joe Page is warming up on the hill,
we paused ten seconds for station identification. This is the
mutual broadcasting system hear the World Series exclusively on WR
seven to ten. See the World Series on WR TV.

Speaker 2 (01:19:41):
Channel nine WR and WR FM U York.

Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
Back at Ebbits Field, the Dodgers have the bases loaded.
Joe Page is coming into relieve Tommy Byrne, who went
three and a third innings allowed but two hits, both
of them in the fourth inning, walk two men, both
of them here in the fourth inning, struck out only
one and is responsible for the three men who are

(01:20:14):
now on base. Score is tied at one in one.
Joe Page calls Joe Gibarro out to the mount as
he finishes his warm up, tosses to talk to him,
and we're set to go. You've got Carl Farrell on third,

(01:20:40):
Jackie Robinson on second, Gil Hodges on first, one out,
one run in on TV Race's ending opening homer.

Speaker 3 (01:20:51):
Score tied one one and Louis allmore right hand hit
her up.

Speaker 1 (01:20:54):
Joe Page into the wind up in comes the pitch
added is strength. Call a fastball through there toward the
outside part of the plate, between the belt and the knees.
They don't play allmo to pull. Are you shading him
around toward right throw? He's the right hand batter. Brillo
moves up the line from third, Robinson moves off second,

(01:21:15):
Hodges off first. Page comes in with his pitch, and
all Mo takes outside for a ball. One in one.
Yogi bluffed a throw down to first, then took a
quick look at Parrillo as Brown danced a third. Rillo
was playing it safe over there. Fred Sandford continues to
limber up in the Yankee bullpen. Louis Almo the batter

(01:21:37):
Prella on third, Robinson on second, Hodges on first, one ball,
one strike on alm. Joe Page comes in with a pitch.
It is swung on, missed, squick two, one into the corn,
a wicked hook, and here you've got on the hill
for the Yankees, one of the most publicized relief pitchers

(01:22:00):
in the history of baseball. And the crowd sensing a
dramatic situation, but with the manager, all the Yankees wondering
whether this is the day that Joe has it or
whether he hasn't. Don't always have it, you know, the
Yankees hoping he does have, the Dodgers hoping he doesn't have.

(01:22:23):
With a count one ball and two strikes, almost step
out of the batter's box for a moment, and as
he starts back in, Paide steps off the rubber, turns around,
has a look in the center field. Guy's back on,
al Mo back in. We're a long third, Robinson on second,
Hodges on first. The wind up free men lead away.
The pitch almost swings and lets a high pop up
pile back of first, drifting over into the stands. Henry

(01:22:45):
leans in. He leans in, and he's got it, and
the bases remain loaded. Henrik lean into the stands and
grabbed that ball. Tommy Henrick reached high over the heads
of standing patrons in the field boxes back of first

(01:23:05):
base and grab that ball or the out. So they're
two away, and up comes Duke Snyder.

Speaker 3 (01:23:14):
That's them left handed.

Speaker 1 (01:23:17):
Fly to left field in the third, and so the
battle continues. Three men on two downs, score tied one
to one. Page into the wind up in comes the pitch.
Snyder swings and sons of groundball out toward Coleman. He's
up with it close to Henrick in.

Speaker 3 (01:23:30):
The inning is over.

Speaker 1 (01:23:35):
And Smokey Joe Page once again proved his pitching prowess
as a relief one run, two hits for the Dodgers.
No Yankee eras and three men left on, and there
was one of the most dramatic situations we've had in
the World Series so far, with the Dodgers having a
golden opportunity to forge way ahead but stopped cold in

(01:23:59):
that inning by Joe Page. And so at the end
of four innings to play, it's one in one, quick,
good looking, comfortable man. That's the kind of shades you
get every time with Gellet Blue Blades. These blades five
for a quarter, are so sharp and so perfectly finished.
They just glide through wiry whiskers. Every stroke is a caress, yes,

(01:24:23):
and you enjoy tops and convenience when you buy Gellett
Blue Blades in the handy Gellette dispenser. It comes in
both ten and twenty blade sizes for the price of
the blades alone. Your four inning totals the visiting Yankees
one run, two hits, no errors, three left on, the
Dodgers one run, two hits, no errors, and three left on.

(01:24:46):
And so the tempo the series has begun to pick
up considerably from the standpoint of thrills. And as we
move now to the top half of the fifth inning
of a one to one ball game, up is Jerry Coleman,
right hand hitter Ralph Franko, the right hander, throws Coleman
takes a strike right in there, overhand fastball between the

(01:25:08):
belt of the knees. Coleman looked at a third call strike.
From the third inning. Of course, we had thrills of
another kind in the first two game, thrilling pitching, thrilling
defensive play. Branc Has pitched to Coleman, swung on in
missed strike two and Branka overpowered Coleman to a fastball
just around the shoulders. Ralph has his jaw set. He's

(01:25:34):
a game competitor. Two strike count on Jerry Coleman. Score
tied one one, and now brank is ready and his
pitch curve is swung on, hit up into the air
and to center field. Snyder out there one hundred and
makes the catch. Coleman sky's out to Snyder in center

(01:25:55):
and with one down, up comes Joe Page Page, the
left hand hitter out feel about straight away Brancas pitches

(01:26:22):
right over per call strike. You know what chances are
in a regular season game Casey Stangle might not have
lifted Burn in a spot like that, because so many
times Burn has loaded them up and pitched himself out
of those jams. The one strike delivery in there for
call strike two. But in a World Series with time

(01:26:47):
so short, managers refuse to take too many chances, especially
when they have well loaded bullpens. Now the two strikes
pitch to Joe Page just swung on a missed strike
three as Ralph Brankett chalks up his strikeout. Now we

(01:27:14):
go to the top of the Yankee order and pick
up Phil Rizzuto's ground to the third and sent a
fly ball in the right center and the third inning
that drove in the Yankees' run, when previously Mates had
walked gone to third on Burns single and that set
it up failed to score the run. The pitches swung
on and filed off in behind the plate a one

(01:27:35):
strike count, Phil went for a low outside pitch string
hit it the right field. So far in this series
there have been a total of thirty three strike odds.
Red was busy figuring up the total. Over there, Brankett

(01:27:58):
delivers to Phil Hive ball one one and one. Conceivably
this might go down in World Series history as the
strike out Series, but we'll wait until that happens. See
how far the series goes and all one ball, one strike.
Here's your pitch, swung on by Phil and filed off

(01:28:20):
to the right of the plate. And as we followed
the flight of the ball, our eye caught Carl Hubbell
and Malotte, who are here a couple of fair ball
players in their day, read one into the counter on
the scooter. They're a couple of the greatest the Giants

(01:28:42):
ever had. Ralph frank Is pitch herb is outside ball
to to two. The commissioner waves to us, missus Chandler,
and seated with the commission today is mister Joe Spang,

(01:29:06):
Junior president of the Gillet Safety Razor Company. Here's your
pitch to Phil, curveball, high ball three man. That was
over but just a little high, so it's a full count.
On the scooter three and two. Branco goes to the

(01:29:28):
rowsenbag that comes back upon the rubber tows it, looks
in and gets the sign from Campanella into the wind
up round, comes to the right arm, the payoff pitches
swung on the ground, ball hit right to Race. He
scoops it up, flips on over to Hodges in time,
and the inning is over. No runs, no hits. No errors,
nobody left on and the score at the end of

(01:29:50):
four and one half innings a play one in one.
It's with a great deal of pleasure that I switched
this gelet microphone over to a fella who not only
has a good, clean shame, but a fellow with whom

(01:30:11):
I'm always, I always feel privileged to work with. Been
broadcasting World Series game since back in nineteen thirty five,
one of the outstanding baseball broadcasting authorities and a nationally
famous sports broadcaster in all fields. The old redhead Red Barber.
Thanks very much, Mel happens again, everybody. Joe Page, who

(01:30:35):
not only won some games for the yankeeses past summer,
but according to Casus Tingle and pitching coach Tim Turner,
save twenty five more. He is ready to pitch the
Capanella does a curve in there for a call strike.
He's a big, strapping six foot left tend and throws
that ball hard. He has a strong arm, he has
the temperament to relieve. His whole disposition is to come
in and choke off a ball ocloud, and he's instremendous

(01:30:58):
added pitches. There's a lot up curve over for a call.
Second strike. I feel around to what left on cap
and Ellen before hitting eighth in the Brooklyn batting order,
first step, last of the fifth shoot one in one
tie and another one of these tough grinding. One's pitch
fast curve low one and two page. If you haven't

(01:31:21):
seen him, pitch rares up on his toes and gives
you a big forward kick. And in addition, he's got
a very loose set of hips. The way he gives
you a lot of motion out there, and back of
that motion is the idea that there's a strong guy
who's going to turn loose that rock. And the hitters said, well,
they just don't exactly take a toe ho rough testament

(01:31:45):
live at one and two. There's a pole back count
standing as it was one in one tie, Campanellen, then Branker,
all above the top of the order, Reefs who hit
the Brooklyn Throme run and the fourth inning his melt
toes way up and left on the field. Page kicks

(01:32:06):
throws Camping on the falls it off still one and two.
Page has control. Jim Turner was telling us that he's
about the best he's ever seen at tuning up in
a bullpen. He knows just how much to get ready.
In other words, says Turner, he doesn't leave a pitch
in the bullpen, meaning he doesn't do too much work,

(01:32:26):
and that is quite a trick or relief man. Page
will leaves sixty times this summer. Throw curveball high outside,
two balls to strikes. Page wears number eleven. I turns
his back on the plate, turns on the back of
the mound where the bases loaded went out. He came

(01:32:47):
on in the fourth inning and silenced it just like that.
One two hitters file ball, nice catch by Henry and
the ground ball by Snyder. Curveball hits slow down the
right side, segretation. Coleman over up for the ball, throws
the first nuts off Campinelli's on four or five steps,
four to three if you're scoring second to first, one up,
one going last to the fifth inning, and here's pitcher

(01:33:10):
Branca coming out of the Brooklyn that's making its way
up to the place right end. Batter woring number thirteen.
After yesterday's game, manager shot and said that his starting
pitzer today would be either Branca or Barney. He'd get

(01:33:31):
Barnie down in the boatpen, and he started with Branker
has given the Brooklyn Clubhouse a couple of hours for
the ball game today, Why Franker, let's see, how's the
first pitcher, Ralph hindside ball one. He said simply that
Branca has been starting the last three weeks. In turn,
has been working regularly, and Barney has not made a

(01:33:53):
start since the Dodgers would last at Chicago. They were
at Chicago, Saint Louis been back at Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphi
one and more. Pitch in the fastball for a call.
Striker Franca is uh not one of the best hitting
pitches in the trade. He struck out. You recall in
the third inning that field is not deepen and is

(01:34:17):
swung in toward right fast swings. Missus Pages fired that
ball down in there. One and two ball game tied
one in one. Takes up lut coaching it first, follow
something up to the plate. They'll gonna start coaching at third.

(01:34:39):
Page pumping now kicks throws. There's a foul on top
of the first place stands out of play. One and
two paid balances the ball down, his glove blows in

(01:35:03):
his hand. A cup of times. Big left tender delivers
verry blue and sideball too. He alls two strikes. He
took something off that ball, trying to make brackets chase it.
Of course, I imagine that brank is a big idea
up at the play is to try and make Page
pitch as much as possible. Two and two the leaf

(01:35:32):
of throwers tastball outside. All three were walls, two strikes
a man going no money on last, but the fifth
he's another spine tingler. All tied one and one So
far in the series, these two teams are either exactly
tired or just the one run differential. Well, that's getting
it off. The close couldn't be any closer. He delivered

(01:36:00):
three and two car strike three fastball. He poured through
there and wrapped clocket, fought off the hands. So this
is the first strike out the page. Now Reef gets
a big hand as he walks up to the plate
the anchors. He had one and nothing. He caught hold
of one of Tommy Burns pitches and blowed it three

(01:36:22):
hundred and fifty one feet. That's where it's marked before
the ball went in the lower left center field stands
leased right hand hitter attend the Page pitches pastball in
too close to the hands. All one my field swung

(01:36:43):
around to what left for two reasons. One Reese poles
in that vicinity, and three the wind is blowing that
way pastball above. It was just above the knees on
the inside one ball, one strike two gone. Page deals

(01:37:08):
rese hits a curveball foul, one and two ball bouncing
over to the Yankee bench and puch. Frankie Corsetti dots out,
takes the ball on the bout throws it over to
the umpire.

Speaker 3 (01:37:18):
Ball boy.

Speaker 1 (01:37:21):
One and two catch a barrow down his harches to
give the sign The hustling young umpire art pass developed.
The American League staff patches down, taking his stance directly

(01:37:41):
behind the receiver. One and two. Pitch outside, pays stick
a little off that one two balls to strikes two
and two. Things quiet for the moment. Page moves off.
The rubber, checks his foothold down half way in the

(01:38:04):
front of the mound, pitches a curve that reached just
to check his swing on in time, turns around and claims, three,
we swung. He would turned around and claim he didn't
swing and pass Weller said he didn't swing for me. Now,
Kastaningo jumps to the front of the Yankee bench. He

(01:38:25):
doesn't get out of it, but there he stands a
figure of silent protest boy at the stage lost a
tremendous thespion when it lost tangle to baseball. He has
a very mobile face. So there's that half swing boy.
I don't find know that DJ Ticker said wrong anytime

(01:38:45):
he has to compete with that. From three two pitchs
swung on the ground, ball right back to the mound,
Pages picked it up, throwed over the first in reech
is retired very easily. So nothing across against Joe Page
and last of the fist. He's come on to face
five men and he's got them all and has not
had a all hard hit. So at the end of
five innings, we'll check our totals. One run, two hits,

(01:39:08):
no errors, identical totals. And so the big crowd looking on.
All of the great people in baseball are here. If
mel and I started telling you who we see, well
we just wouldn't have any time for the play by play.
They're all here. All that you can think now for
the ball club going on the attack. And the sixth

(01:39:30):
inning for the Yankees, Henry Barrow and the Maggio that's
how they'll hit for the Brooklyn Club. Afield Franka on
the mound, Campanella back of the plate, Hodges at first,
Robinson at second, reached it short and he makes us
at third base. Today in left world all know center

(01:39:52):
field Duke Snyder and the right feeler is called for
alof odd Passerella back of the plate. Jorder it first
Hubbed at second, wrote in at third, bar in the
left field corner, and Hurley in the right field corner.
The nationalaguumpires represent fifty eight years of major league experience

(01:40:14):
and thirteen World Series. The American League umpires represent twenty
six years of major league experience in seven World Series.
Tell me Henry first up in the sixth swings and
missus at a fastball at Branker threw right down in there,
nothing in one, all tied, run in one. Henrick rounded
up to first basement, hides in the first inning and
walked in the third. Wind continues blowing from right field

(01:40:39):
and left from first base to third as a pass
ball alow inside, it gets away from Campanella and goes
on back to the stands. Nothing more than bora one
new I get put in play. Frankie Crisetti coaching at third,
Bill Dicked coaching it first. M Henrik Choke said bad

(01:41:04):
about an inch leans in let ten hitter takes an
outside curve of dismisses and it is two and one
two bad. One strike from of course is being played
to hit in the right field ranker. That's out his breath,

(01:41:28):
and I starts pumping, delivers to one although four fall.
Second strike on the outside that seemed to be the
change off the fastball. Two hours, two strikes. Henrik a
slightly open stands. Choke said bad, just to shade more

(01:41:52):
right now two two pits curve swung on hit out
him too short right field for allow coming in. He's
under it the right field that takes it, and one
man is disposed. All beginning matters in the sixth inning
one on one tie, and you'll give Bella, who is
zero for two struck out on the first inning, popped
up to second baseman Robinson in the third. He's got

(01:42:13):
a little bandaging around his wrist and around the base
of the thumb on his left hand. That's the thumb
that he broke. If you were calling audits still so
and painful. I feel to it right Brancus throw the
curveball in there a false fright moving in one one out,

(01:42:37):
Buddy on a. Pitching continues to dominate big right handers,
throws lalla balls swung on, hits shop at the first
on one bows hodges up, runs over to the bike
and makes to put out on the system. And I'm
getting much more than halfway down the line. So two
men are gone, and big DiMaggio stepping in. Even though

(01:42:58):
he struck out twice, you can feel that the sentiment
of the fans is all for this great player. That
field swings around toward left, and his back at the
most respectful distance infield is deep. Reese had shot is
overshifted very much forward third, mix us his deep at third,

(01:43:21):
but in the brank of pitches curveball in for a
call strike. Then I Joe struck out in the second
and struck out in the fourth, both times swinging one
in one ball game two gone the cash ball swung on.
It's a high puck fly the place Baseman hided of
getting under in fol ground, and now it's in fair

(01:43:44):
ground and he makes the cake the win BLI the
ball back in the fair ground that the place Baseman
had it, so it is nothing across. So all the
yanchors in the top of the sixth inning, the scoreb
here York one but the one coming out there at
Steel This morning, Bob Chipman, pitcher for the Chicago Cubs,

(01:44:06):
told me the Gillette Superspeed Raisor is the finest shaving
instrument that he's ever used. So, Bob, have I given
the fans the lowdown? Will you? It's always a pleasure
to put your friends next to a good thing, and
you let Superspeed Razor is all of that, believe me? Convenient? Bob, Yes,
blade changing his essension cleaning is too more important. You
get the slickest shaves in the world. Man, The new

(01:44:29):
Gillette Superspeed Raizor is the greatest shaving bargain ever offered.
You get this fine precision made gilette one piece razor
and a ten blade Gillette dispenser in a modern styrene
travel case, a big dollar seventy five value for only
a dollar. Ask for the new Gelette Superspeed raisers at
any convenience store. Well, this world series is getting to

(01:45:02):
be the sort of one that you can't so much as.

Speaker 5 (01:45:05):
Got your eye.

Speaker 1 (01:45:06):
Lads, But there something might happen. And I imagine you
missions of folks listening in as over seven hundred radio
stations Cara this Jeanette World Series broadcast for all four
corners of the eighth. I imagine that it's hard for
you to run off any place and miss about him.

(01:45:26):
Never has there been a series for such tightness of
pitching as a series opened up, that is tightness on
both sides. Now we've got Eddie Mixus, first up, last
of the sixth Inny Neptender, Joe Page delivers pastball low,
inside ball one. The irregular third base in the book

(01:45:47):
of the season for book was Billy Cox, who sprained
his ankle in a morning game Labor Day and has
not played since. And since that time, Mixes, a right
hand hitter, has alternated with Juggage's left hand hitter at third. Pastball, inside,
to the ball too, two balls, no strikes. Jogson played
the first two games to recall, started them the stadium,

(01:46:07):
and Mixus is starting this. The pitching for the Yankees
today has been from the south part side. First Tommy Burrin,
now Joe Page two. Nothing pitch of the first strike.
That's always the big one, because you not only have
to get it over. But you've got to get something
on it. Two balls run strike miss Page's ball game.

(01:46:33):
Of course you want to lose. He works fastball swung
on a high pop fly into right center field. Mates
is under it, not a two tough chairs for the
right fielder, and he's got it. And there again you
could trace the force of the win. Mapes must have
judged under that ball five more steps toward center field
as the wind made the ball dance. So I'll put

(01:46:54):
out for the right field one up, one away, last
of the sixth in one in one tie. And Carl Farrello,
who is one for two, singled off Burn in the
fourth inning after flying outsider field in the first I
feel rount what left crowd watching intensely As this grim

(01:47:20):
struggle continued. Captender Page pitches a curve outside the right hand,
hit a call, Farrello one, and all the Yankees a
field Page were leaving, came on in the fourth inning,
the bases loaded one out and stop. They dodged right
in their tracks. Kept the ball game then as it was,
and as it is now one in one. Barron catching

(01:47:42):
his second game. So the rower caught yesterday. Back at
the plight. Henry could first base, the second, Jerry Coleman
at charted arat prizudo and to Day at third. It
is Bobby Brown for the Yankees. They want to know
pitch the Farrello swung on, bounced straight to second baseman. Coleman,
who's up, put it on a big bounce, throws over
the first base, and it's all for Pollo, who's retired
before he's more than halfway down the line. So to

(01:48:04):
a gone page is allowed no man to reach space safely.
And Jackie Robinson, who was awful one popped the second
base in the second inning, walked against burn in the
fort now steps their Rebinson yesterday doubled and was scored
a single bout Hodges for the only run in that game.

(01:48:27):
Yank yacht field Geen Woodling isn't left. The Maggio remains
in center. On the right fielder is Cliff makes to gone.
Rebinson leans in. He's deep backed in the plate. Let up,
ball is high outside. It's all one, all game, an

(01:48:49):
hour and a half hold. The skies remain threatening and dark,
but so far we have not had so much as
a wisp of brain. The weather man said that it
would be ominous overcast, cloudy, but that it would not rain. Also,
he predicted that the weather would be clearing for tomorrow.
Let's hope so so high outside of the ball too,

(01:49:18):
the balls, no strikes. All eyes focused right now at
the heart of the diamond. Left ended Page, the batter
right in hitter Robinson. The pitch low inside of ball three.
That was a fastball. I think Page expected Robinson to

(01:49:40):
be swinging on that because he was trying to pitch
him in close to the hand, which is the way
that a lot of Lieutenant pitches have been pitching Robinson
for a couple of years. And all Joe said, like
any baseball so played them.

Speaker 6 (01:49:54):
By Pastarella accommodates him. Page taking his time getting ready.

Speaker 1 (01:50:08):
On one ball game, nobody on two out three outing
pitches ball four and without throwing Robinson at trist He
watched him. But this is the second time the Jackson watch.
First watch him up by Page, and this is the
first man of eight to face Page to get on
against him and Gil Hodges, who filed out to catch
a barrow in the second inning, and Joe based on

(01:50:29):
balls off Burn he was the last man that Burn
pits two in the fourth Hodgers was off one steps
in jovin the run yesterday X. Actually you speak of
run so far this series as the run of the
first game, the run of the second game. At least
four club has a run today. Robinson off first, Hija
swings the high fly ball straight out to them, joant center.

(01:50:52):
Joe's waiting for it. He makes the catch. Shouldn't rig
you do otherwise? They so no RN, no one man.
Now let's check our six inning totals. Still one run,
two hits, and no eras as identical totals. Now I'm

(01:51:17):
before I'm over into the seventh inning, and there's the
Yankee fans here at Brookedam begins standing for a stretch.
Let's pause ten seconds for station identification. This mutual broadcasting
system here the World.

Speaker 2 (01:51:29):
Series exclusively on WI seven to ten. See the World
Series on WI TV channel nine.

Speaker 1 (01:51:37):
W O R and w O R F m U
Yord speaking a moment ago about to find job that
Joe Page is done. It sets your mind to thinking
of great relief pictures. Page's predecessor as a great relief man,

(01:51:57):
Johnny my fav is sitting over there alongside the Yankee
dugout and then you think of other relief pitches, Hugh Casey,
who is where the Yankee is now, but did his
greatest relief work for Brooklyn. And then you go back
to Fred Marlberry, who was a great right handed relief pitcher,
And of course everybody was extremely sorry that he had

(01:52:18):
lost an arm in an automobile accident down and next
year Texas, and of course everybody's pulling for him to
soon be out of the hospital. And if he's listening,
we hope it's good listening. Now we have Bobby Brown,
pushed it for the seventeen good left ten battle chokes,
had bat a couple of inches, swings and hits, a
hunt one on, one bounce, the second baseman, Robinson to
throw it over the first nuts off for Brown. So

(01:52:42):
one off, one pitch and one away. This tough ball
game gets tougher. All tied at one in one. The
last base hit for the Yankees for a double by
Jean woodling off the lower part of the right field
score Boar a deeal toward right. Big Branca throws fastball

(01:53:10):
on the outside of balls one strike, I think in one.
The last man to get on against Branco was this
self same Woodland was up here now with one away
a nobody on the seventh one on one ball game.
Everything tired, including one and one for games. There's a
curve law inside all one. Frankie Crisette, at high piping

(01:53:34):
voice which can easily be heard, is busially hauling encouragement
from his coaching post to third. After Woodland, who was
in the crouch, peaked close together at ten, hitter swings
fills it off, one ball, two strikes. Woodling had a
chance with Cleveland some years ago and then was up
in the National League with Pittsburgh and didn't hit, went

(01:53:56):
out to the Pacific Coast League, changed his stance, left
your door, helped him alone, and he led the Coast
League last year, and he's been a very helpful fellow
to have around the Yankee ball club this year. One
or two pitchers swung on as a high fly ball
in the straightaway center Snider backs up one two step,
waits for the ball and makes the catch instead of field.
So Branker has now retired the batting order. The last

(01:54:19):
nine fit mates who bounced out in the fourth inning,
but more important Mapes who walked in the third and
that was the first walk drawn by a Yankee soap
on the series, and that was turned into New York
run Mape, so that ten hit it. Mates walked opened
up the third inning, and with one out went around

(01:54:41):
the third base as pitcher Burne delivered a hit and
run single, Mapes swings fileball back out of fly and
his mel pointed out to you in the third that
was a very vital point that base hit by Tommy Burne.
And not only that, but Mapes had gotten a tremendous

(01:55:02):
jump on Branker. He was really all He just went
into third base standing up, throw curveball, a inside one
ball once right, one and one. Everybody is very serious
visaged in this ball game. Nobody grinning one one pitch

(01:55:24):
swung on tip and it is like two one ball,
two strikes two out. The consistency of the way that
pressure has carried through all these games unbelievably identical. One

(01:55:48):
into the count, throw pass ball just missing inside. Oh
that's close, so close in fact, that play on Passerala
just tell his storm and his index fingers to show
that that boy just did miss lest at the inside
right and pitcher l ten hit it. Mapes fall to
go back from the plate swinging from the end i

(01:56:10):
field to a right two two pitch swung on a
high fly ball into center field. Snyder comes in, now
goes back. He's under it, sent a field of hundred,
He's got it es at him far and the win
been the reverse of what it is today. That might
have been all the way.

Speaker 3 (01:56:26):
So with a row.

Speaker 1 (01:56:28):
The Brooklyn denizens now come to their feet as they
move in to the last of the seventh inning, and
the score stands New York one and Brooklyn one. Bobby
Chipman of the Chicago cub he set a mouthfug when
he told you that the new gi Let Super Speed
Raiser tops them off for shaving ease and convenience fans.
This race that changes blades instantly, glides through whiskers as

(01:56:51):
gently as a breeze, and rinses clean in a jiffy twist.
It opens, zip, it's loaded, Twist again, and you're ready
for the best looking, most refreshing shaves ever. There's nothing
to take a pot or put together, nothing to jam
or clawn, nothing to waste your time or try your patience.
So take it from me. It's a beauty and a

(01:57:11):
bargain if you get it. Plus a Gillette dispenser holding
ten factory shop. You let blue Blades in a serviceable
starring travel case a big dollar seventy five value for
a dollar. Ask for the new Gilett Super Speed Raiser
set at any store and see what real shaving comfan
and convenience are like. Now the last half of the

(01:57:35):
seventh inning, Yolmo, Duke, Snideroy Campanellen, any one of the
three on safely, then Pechubranco will hit one on one
dog for Joe Paige, who is the key man for

(01:57:55):
the Yankees. As this game comes down with grim tonight
today there's so few runs in it. Page standing on
the mound, Bella's having gone to give him the sign
old All who stands deep back in the box, right

(01:58:17):
hand hittering over the closed stands bound stop third to
first against Burn in the second inning and against Page
was the biggest out of the ball game in the
court swings of a high, high file ball that catch
a barrow is under, getting under, getting under and makes
the catch till more than fifteen feet behind home play,

(01:58:38):
so one up and one away. As Page continues moving
through the rook and batters as a you let blue
Blade mows through your whiskers. Now I've got Duke Snyder
who's off the two to ten hitter. So swung on
high file ball on top of the third base, stands

(01:58:59):
out of play and out of Paul. The ball's run
strike with the wind blowing out toward left field as
strongly as it is, that's the way it is blown
all afternoon, and the page probably pitching outside consistently. The
smatter the hochfield is back in the left, especially the Maggio.
Duke swings and pulls the ball wide at first place.
Henry cup with it runs over to the buying and
makes it put out. But two steps so the play

(01:59:23):
haander by Tommy Henrick unassisted lane and two men ago
on last the seventh Roy Campanello for two stepping in
the Brooklyn Road. Secretary Errold Taddy just brought us the
attendance figures with the money figures with it thirty two thousand,
seven hundred and eighty eight paid, which means one hundred

(01:59:44):
and sixty four thousand and sixteen dollars. That is why
Campanella swings has a high fly ball beat to the
left seventier. There's a left field of woodling under the
ball post to the ball and makes the cat two
hundred and fifty feet a while, and the wall is
three hundred and fifty one. So I'm having a cross
in the last of.

Speaker 7 (02:00:04):
The seven who are runs red quarter only four runs
so far in the three games, the first two wonder nothing.

Speaker 1 (02:00:16):
First one by the Yankees, the second one by the Dodgers,
and now each team has a run as we move
into the eighth inning of this third game, with games
tired at one and one. In the eighth inning for
the Yankees, it's second basement Coleman, who is betting eighth
first step, followed by Joe Page. You know he'll hit

(02:00:38):
for himself, and then by the top of the order Rozudo.
When the Igers come in for the last of the eighth,
it will be pitcher Branca leading off in the top
of the order, Reese and Mixes, and Ralph is just
getting out to the mound. Right now, here's Campanella coming
up to the plate, and let's open up that other
microphone for mel Allen and get his observations. Well, did

(02:01:00):
you ever think you'd see such pitching, especially in the
clutch when it meant so much? Never did as a
matter of fact, in the press room before the ball
game got underway, talking to Dan Daniel, who Aerondite Sports
report of the World Telegram, been following baseball for longer.
Man in red and ages together, he said he didn't

(02:01:22):
know what in the world all of a sudden happened,
He said, the blossomed forth here, the Mattheson's, the mcginnity's,
and the great's all over again. Is there something that
no one ever expected? And that's just the way it's
been And looks that as if that's the way it's
going to still be read, well, that's the way it
is right now. All tide one in line is a

(02:01:45):
moving to the eighth inning. And here is the right
hand hitting second vasion of New York Kerry Coleman. First
up Brancas past ball is over, but too high ball wine. Also,
the weather conditions have befriended all pitches. Wether conditions, as
well as the fact that the batter screen was taken
down in center field at the stadium for the first

(02:02:06):
two days. Throw curveball over. It has been dark this afternoon.
Of course, that sets up a pitcher's fastball. The dark
word gets see more of a disadvantage the hitters are.
And then at the stadium in the first two days,
the hitters were having to look against that white baseball,
against all the white shirts in the center field beaches section,

(02:02:26):
batting screen was down one on one pitch fallenness shot, curveballs.
How will make no mistake about it. The pitching staffs
that had come through such a kill Kenny struggle to
win Pennance were braced, were all set. One ball, two strikes,

(02:02:50):
Paulman choking wall up on that bat. Oh about three
four inches fastball inside just under the hands, two and
two frankerin Page. Even when they give the hitter a
ball close to the plate, Pullman, with the street pretty

(02:03:13):
well back from the plate, leans in fss it from
the waist. I feel step toward left pitch fastball, rattle
of half strike, Graves and Carman was just immobile. Eye
then there it was. He just couldn't move. You could
just see him straining to try and break close than
he couldn't. That's six strikeouts for Banca. By the way,

(02:03:36):
branc is concerned in all the strike outs of the game,
and he's the only dodge that he's stuck out. He's
gon struck out twice, and he's struck out six himself,
and pitcher Page stepping in. He's been up once this
afternoon and struck out. He's at bat in the fifth inning,
left hand batter, I feel toward right. Franka throws fastball

(02:04:01):
in under the hands. Ball one went away. Top of
the eighth inning, all tied, one on one, Campanello's throw back.
The branker had loosened, the pitcher reached retrieves of all
at short. Paige, who came in out of that boat,
been to New York just sixty times this past summer.

(02:04:26):
Throw full on all aback. The Yankees figure that Paige
and his performance on Saturday, as he came on if
you'll recall and pitched six and the third innings held
the Red Sox to no runs and one scratch hit.
The fact that he was able to finish set up
everything for New York. Other words, he pitched them to

(02:04:47):
the wind one one delivery, Carve swung on hit back
to the middle. Greese going over up, joggles the ball.
The cover throws over the first in time for the
art and Page is out on the bang banger straight
say Reese had the ball bounced up and hit him
in the chest.

Speaker 5 (02:05:03):
He recovered, threw over the first to Hodges and hides
like a ballet.

Speaker 1 (02:05:07):
Acid made that split as he moved.

Speaker 5 (02:05:10):
His whole body out into greet the ball and pages out.

Speaker 1 (02:05:14):
Oh. He was straining hustling down that line. Oh Reese
recovering another one of the close plays. Those are the
things that give up nightmarees when you get those bang bangers.
We had four in the ball game yesterday saw two
men up and two go on top of the eight.

(02:05:38):
Casarella back of the plate. He had two like that
at first yesterday. Pasarella snapped on his mask. Rasulo both
the three with the right hand hitting shortstop, swings on
the fastball and pops it up in the short left

(02:06:00):
the rest going back from short waving Almo out of
the way, and pee wee makes the cat well. The
Achis are retired, having a sauce in the top of
the eighth inning, as Branca has set the side down
in order. Now for the last four rounds and with
Brooklyn coming into the last the eighth, the score remains
New York one Brooklyn line. It goes without saying that

(02:06:23):
every man who've had his personal appearance and comfort. Wants
to get the best looking, most refreshing shaves. He can.
To do that and save money as well, use Gellett
Blue blades fire for a quarter. They have the easiest
shaving and longest lasting edges ever put on steel. Also,
they fit your Gelett razor to a tee and protect

(02:06:44):
you from the discomfort caused by misfit lads. Now for
extra convenience, by Gelett Blue blades in the handed Gillette
dispenser that zips them out on wrap. With it, you
change blades in a jiffy, Save time, save fuss. Also,
the blades are perfectly protected, stay factory sharp until you
you get twenty blades forty shaving edges for ninety eight cents.

(02:07:08):
Ten blades for forty nine cents. Look sharp, heel sharp,
be sharp. Used elect food blades with the sharpest edges ever.
Hauls the Brooklyn Dodger, knock them down and drag them
up the back Hall Rasmetas Symphony orchestra that plays here

(02:07:29):
throughout the summers just came over and gave us salute
to our only living president, Herbert Hoover. Got a baseball fan.
Now I'm moving to the last of the eighth inning,
and the two key figures of the ball game face
each other. Page on the mound and Branker, who is
the batter. It's a tough one one in one. Apparently,

(02:07:55):
nothing for the big stakes and Major League ball in
nineteen forty nine is to come easily. Honest, didn't The
World Series are not going that way. Ranker swings files
Page's first pitch back for a call strike paid. Since
he has come on Hash pitch three and two thirds innings,
retired every battle but one. Robinson, whom he walked with
two out in the sixth inning, got the next man promptly.

(02:08:17):
Franco has gone all the way, given up one round
two hits. Those are the identical totals in the other
one on one tie pits. Hashball ripped in there for
a call second strike. Franka has retired the last thirteen
batters that he's pitched to the nets. That thirteen of
these wearing. Those of you who are not keeping score

(02:08:38):
and backtrack on him. I feel into right and not
deep in feel straight away, throw curveball, just hanging outside
one and two one ball, two strikes. It continues to
be a dark afternoon, but the park is brilliantly illuminated
by the pitching that we are having lighted up the

(02:09:00):
entire series. No series has ever begune with as much
pitching efficiency as this one one or two pitch curve
in their cost back three so Franker continues to be
involved in all of the game's strikeouts. He struck out

(02:09:21):
once against Burn for Burns only strikeouts, twice against Page
for Pages only strikeouts, and back to himself has struck
out six of the Yankees. Phewey Reese, who hit a
home run in the fourte to get the ball game
balanced as it still is one in one ree stepping
in his home run that balanced the game unbalanced, Burned

(02:09:42):
his control almost went out the winder immediately. His meltoden
had to be lifted. Four hitters later. I feel to
what left Page delivers passed ball low and side so
that one hard. He meant to throw it hard. He
always means to throw that ball hard. Page, who was

(02:10:07):
the glue man. He just held that Yankee stat together
all summer works inside against the hands, took a little
bit off the fastball, then ball two, two balls, no strikes.
The wind continues blowing out toward left field. It is
the wind that helps a right hand battle who gets
a high drive out toward left, one gone, last of

(02:10:34):
the eighth. Everything almost definitely quiet for the moment to nothing.
Fitch in the fastball for a call strike. Big guys
working two balls, one strike, Riest waiting trim, square shouldered

(02:11:03):
figure in the shortstop with the Dodger since nineteen forty
Fellow whose job he took a shortstop, sitting over there
with his boss at Leo de Rosha, now the manager
of the Giant, sitting there with Horace bonhom two balls,
one strike, restakes a curve, but just plays outside for
ball three. Ambarra turns around and apparently he kicks on

(02:11:28):
that decision to pass around and passed all a Potfy
shakes his head. No, the umpires are under tremendous pressure.
They do a tremendous job. Three one pitch, ball four
in under the hands, pass ball at miss on refot.

(02:11:52):
This is the second walk given up by Joe Page.
Now Eddie Mix is walking up to the plate, a
right hand light hitting the tiller. The infielder for the
Dodgers playing third base today, Reese at first and alert

(02:12:13):
base runner Page, who of course has a good move
to hold a man on it. First sets on the
milld Henry takes the bag. Now, let's see what happens.
He's all tied one and one, one out infield and
double play death tow the first out in time. Pitler
coaching at the first let out an agoni scream when

(02:12:35):
he saw that Page was coming over to first base.
But Reese was back Mapes and Wright is in very
very close. Of course, he's got that win behind him
blowing in. Mixis is primarily a left field hit her. Anyhow,
third baseman Brown to step inside the bag. Here's the
pitch and Mixus sets the bunt, takes a curve over,

(02:12:56):
but there's a throw down the first base and Reece
just does slide back. Was tose at Barrel father that ball?
Both these catches today, Barrel in New York, who just threw,
and camping out of Brooklyn, they'll throw. So there was
a curveball in and Mixus were set the butt and

(02:13:17):
drew his back back out of the way. The curve
was over for a call strike. Now, whether he was
bluffing to try and set up something or just to
annoy the Yankee in field, or whether he was serious
means to be seed Race taking his lead off first
Page delivers a pitch out, but pee wee isn't going,
So it was ball won the Yanks. The course could

(02:13:38):
afford to have Page come down delibery outside with the fastball,
hoping that the Dodgers were running. Now the count is
one and one. The score is one and one. The
games in the series up to this one are one
and one. Last to the eighth inning, Page looking down

(02:14:07):
George's eyes now until it practically slits, looks at first pitches.

Speaker 5 (02:14:11):
The passports one one hit wide or third on the
left Fiel four base hit.

Speaker 1 (02:14:14):
Please number on second base and holes on ahead of
Woodlands r starts a single for mixes two between third
and sort did is our question? Person hip number three

(02:14:34):
for books and hit number five in the ball game.
So that's the first base hit off page, And now
Page is in a jam. I was all making a
base on balls and one out the race and a
single two mixes. It may be that mixus and bluffing
that bunt tightened the Yankee in field up even closer.

(02:14:56):
At any rate, he had it up so close that
that ball just skipped nimbly through between third basement Brown
and shots at Brazuda. Now managers thingle hollous for time,
gets Paige's attention to tell me Henry's attention. He wants
Henrick to play back the yanked. The infield now is
still in double play deft. The batter is called for

(02:15:16):
all all the I field is just little round twelve
left sorows one for three right hand batter can't run
fast because of the Goroard injury. One out. Brow swing
the high fly ball into right center field, Mates going
back to the right field. Hundred Reaes tagging up at second.
There's the catch and Pee Wee bluts toward third, but

(02:15:36):
holds on and the throw goes beautifully and perfectly over
the third base cut off the chest up Razuto. Mates
is a fine throwing army. Saved the Yankees and games.
But's going man out at home plate in the pennet race.
So that's the big second out and the league's leading batter,
thank you Robinson walking out hate set delivers Rombinson swings

(02:16:00):
hip the ball right out to the Maggio in center field,
and there's the catch of the line drive for out
number three, and Saul Page comes down and settles his
own threat in the last half of the eighth inning
show at the end of eight one run, two hits
and no errors for the Yankees, one run, three hips

(02:16:21):
and no eras for the Dodgers.

Speaker 2 (02:16:28):
Here the World Series exclusively on w o R seven
to ten. See the World Series on w o R
TV Channel nine, w o R and w o R FM,
New York.

Speaker 1 (02:16:46):
Here we go into the ninth inning and Tommy Hendrick
is first up. Ball game level at one in one
break the right hands. Hendrick swings a ground ball at
Robinson picks up crows over the first in time to
the lat a great role for a fine play second base.

(02:17:13):
With Robinson running along the edge of the right field
grass toward first base, leaned down toward his gold hand side,
came up with what looked like a certain base hit
in the right field for Henry, and threw over the Hodges.
So it is one up and one goal. Now the
batter is Yogi Berra. This ball game is now being
played on the same times and conditions as though it

(02:17:33):
were already in extra innings. Barrel let ten hitter crowds
that played from behind. Chucky Strong picks a let up
curveball down by his knees ball one went away one
in one tie. Who would have thought that this third
game could continue such a pitiless pressure. Following the pattern

(02:17:54):
of the first two pitch fastball in at the knees,
four ball two two hours, no strikes, Franco turns his
back on the plate, walks to the rear of them.
Aud reached it short, walked part way in, says something

(02:18:15):
to him. Barrow readed a swing. That's his stock in trade.
You'll swing in anything if he takes the notion. Brushed
off very quickly by Art Pasarella. Two and two. That's

(02:18:36):
the lallin. Strike count went out. Bara swinging and stick
menacingly back and forth pulled it from the end. Two
two pitch curveball hie outside didn't cut down an end.
So it is now four count of three and two ball.
Game is just two hours off. Just have two rhymes
in it. Each side is one of 'em. Franco shakes

(02:19:04):
now now starts pumping, delivers three in two. There's a
solid fall outside first base, down into the right field corner.
Ed Hurley down there trees the ball throws it out.
Commissioned Chandler, several years ago took the alternate umpires out

(02:19:24):
of the stands and put them down in the foul corners,
which is a very fine contribution. Sometimes balls hit right
down in those corners are extremely difficult to judge. Also,
that gives umpires up in the outfield a better angle
on balls that either caught a trap. Now three two

(02:19:44):
pits again, turn of low inside, back to the stands.
Yogi goes down the first pace. Capanella comes back to
the trees. The ball and bar stops at first. So
and it's just fall four off. Had been able to
advance in your father, than it would have been a while.
Pitch added the curve ball down low and into the dirt.
So with one out now our reach is first based

(02:20:05):
on balls. Which is the third wall given up by Branker.
Today it's the third walk in three games given up
by the book. The monster cride soup Forth, the pitching
emissary of managers shot and goes trotting out to the mound.
Souk is in uniform, and under baseball rules which never relaxed,
only men in umpire's uniforms or players in our coaches

(02:20:29):
and managers in baseball suits are allowed to be out
on the playing field unless than in the emergencity have
to call for groundkeeper. In other words, a manager who
is in street court has to stay in the dugout.
And Shotton does not wear a baseball suit. South Forth
goes out to discuss matters with branker Joe Hatton. The

(02:20:51):
left hander gets up from the book on ballfence. The
second time he was up, he was throwing there in
the third inning, as Mel told you now, Jodan Majo
at the play all for three today, I feel deep
round toward left one in one tie borrow at first,
one out the fist of the magio fastball high and
outside four ball one. The Magio looks down to third
base coach Prisetti to get the sign as to how

(02:21:13):
managers stingles won't this one played. Mado swinging from the
end feet wide apart the clipper set picture, swings as
a foleball on top of the right field stands, and
it's one and one, one ball one stright. Maggio's foul

(02:21:34):
up there on the right field stands, start up three six,
half a dozen pigeons, one in one. Frankochek's first pitches
a curve, blowing away Campanella down into his right to
hold the ball up and it's two and one. Two balls,

(02:21:55):
one strike, m all tied one and one. Well, we
got all the ball game today. Anybody could ask for
big right handed checks. First delivers strike swinging a passball

(02:22:18):
high end by the hand, and the magio really took
a ripper, unbuttoned his ships swinging on that. The two
balls strikes bell are not too swift. A runner leading

(02:22:38):
down at first hid the first baseman in and out
at uh the bag with him, knives off the bag.
The two two fifts to the maggio, a high high
ho fall up five perrid mixes is under it close
to the stands. He's got it GoF to the magio.
It wants to be a very discharging series. Big of

(02:23:00):
course he's not strong. You've been sick, he's had he's
had a terrible year. Their fates have really bitten at him.
But he's had only one hitting the series, and that
was a dribbler for third. Today he struck out twice,
popped up for the first patient fall out to the
third second. Now Bomby Brown, who was a racket breaking

(02:23:22):
pinch hitter back in the forty seven series, A ten
batot choking that bat. He's tough hitter, Frank has said
on the mound delivers Brown swings and there's a ground
fall halfway off for third. He was trying to check
his swing, playing not to swing balls. One strike. Two

(02:23:50):
teams are really locked. A run a piece today and
a game of piece up to hear bear better to
cut and go two out at first to pitch FastPort
swung out hit in the right, clear flour basemark going
around second base and holds on for allow is known

(02:24:11):
to have a rifle corn on. The throw goes all
the way to third base. So Brown singles, which is
the third hit for the Yankees, and the total joy
again even at a run. Three hits and no arrows,
so Yankees are first and second. As the Yankees come
on with a thread here in the ninth inning, a
sharp single to right drilled through between first basement Hodges,

(02:24:31):
second baseman Robinson, and the matter now is Jean Woodling,
who has won for three. This is his only appearance
in the series. Double the right the fourth inning. There'd
been no hit off franc Or since Woodling's double. That
ten batter feet close together steps toward first base in
his stride and is in quite a crowd. Swinging from

(02:24:52):
the end. Frank has pitch swung on fowl back. There
was a high outside curve that Woodlings went the balls
one strike Brown the runner at first, Barah, who is
the key runner, is down at second, should have one
in one tie Woodlink Crouch. Francis stands erect stops pitches

(02:25:23):
fastball just then at the knees bar one track one.
Things grow quiet. Now for the second Branker for pairs
for his next delivery, rubs up the ball that puts

(02:25:45):
his glove back on checks second base, stops pitches inside
at the knees again. Four ball to another fastball, two balls,
one strike Woodleg looking down to crizetim see what the
orders are. The orders are going on. Pitch by pitch.
Reese comes in from short, takes the ball from Branca,

(02:26:07):
and the short stops slipping his glove. He is busially
rubbing up that ball. Meanwhile, Pee weee talking to Ralph.
Now the Brooklyn captain goes back to the shortstop post.
Two balls once right, Barah eating down off second, Frisetti
continually reminding him two men out run on anything the

(02:26:29):
ball has ordered brought in the pad on past Rolla
for an inspection. After the Reese had rubbed it up.
It's found to be serviceable. Left him play all right,
two and one is the count. Frank is shaking now.
Campanello stays low back of the plate. The two to
one pitch a pass ball just missus low inside for

(02:26:50):
the ball three and the way Woodling back from that
ball case is Tingle had ordered him to take it
no matter where. It was nine three and one, and
Woodling checks brought us again. Corsetti looked into Stingle and
then gave a bunch of signs, one goodman and the
rest the hocus pocus for the decoy. All right, counted

(02:27:13):
three and one. Branker deals call strike two past Flo
on the outside in Woodlands. Who's taken a step up
court first is recalled by They played Umpire's decision and
Bella's for the moment. Corsetti hollowed something from back of third.
So it's an automatic running here three balls, two strikes

(02:27:34):
two out manute first and second. Well, I guess you
say this is the biggest pitch so far, wouldn't you?
Games standing one in one. Let's see what it goes.
Frank already right hand. The pitches the runner's break. It's
ball four, and Campanella had all he could do to
keep that ball from going back to the stands, so
the bases are loaded. Branca turned the pass ball loose

(02:27:55):
down across the shins, so the bases are now pill
first time the Yankees have had the bases loaded in
the series. A walk, a single, and a base on ball.
This is four walks given up by Branker. Clift Mapes,
the left hand hitting right fielder, is waiting to bat next,
and there is Clyde soup Forth, one of the Brooklyn coaches,

(02:28:16):
going out to the mind now to talk to Breaker.
Robinson has come in from second base. Captain Reefs from
short catching. Campanello's out there. Right handed Jack Batter is
up throwing in the Brooklyn boat pen along with Hatton.
Hatton has been throwing a long time suki looking down
at the boat pen, but he's taking Branker off to
one side and he's talking to him, and apparently it

(02:28:39):
looks as though soup Forth is talking with Branker to
give Branker a chance to say whether he thinks he
can go on or not. And they're going with Branker
throw the coach back into the bench, now stands on

(02:29:00):
the mound a long, solitary key figure. Reese has gone
back to short. Robinson the second and Campanella set it
down behind the plate and Mapes, the six foot left
ten hitting right fielder. Wait a minute, and Mapes is
going to be called back from the plate, and Johnny
Mize is going to pinch hit. Myz, the former Cardinal,

(02:29:25):
the former Giant who was sold from the Giants late
in the summer, but in time to be elger for
the series to the Yankees. Myers, who pinch hit a
single yesterday in the right field, is coming on to
pinch hit for Mapes. The mys is no stranger to Branker.

(02:29:46):
I haven't had many a brush So Johnny Mize is
coming on to pinch hit and going down to the
Yankee bullpen to get ready to go into the outfield.
Is Hank Bauer. So Myz, who is one for one
pen ship single yesterday coming up to the play shortly
after he was sold to the Yankees by the Giants.

(02:30:06):
He heard his shoulder. He's available for hitting duty, but
can't play at first. So here's the big follow Johnny
myer stepping in hitting for the right fielder in the
ninth inning, Freeman or on, he's a one in one
ball game, you don't go away. I'd feel deep around

(02:30:29):
to it right. Rank of pitches and my sticks of
fastball in by the belt buckle football one as Casey
Steingle sort of leading a little weaving, sinuous dance down
there in the Yankee events. Brank of pumps the livers.
My s takes a fastball into a call strike one

(02:30:54):
ball one strike?

Speaker 2 (02:30:57):
Mi?

Speaker 1 (02:30:57):
Is it? A big guy and he's over the chance.
They call him the big cat and he swings at
heavy batters. Woud weighed no more than a dry turkey feather? Okay?
Three men on one on one ball and strike count.
Rank of pumps two out the pitches, the passball outside
four ball two one one single had mates that's at

(02:31:19):
the plate, and he was not going to reveal his
hand until he saw whether manager Shotton was going to
take Bracker out or not. But when it was a part,
the brancer was to remain pitching. Then he called mates
back and put the big miserup there.

Speaker 3 (02:31:33):
We're now it.

Speaker 1 (02:31:34):
Well, she's tired one and one. Hold on to your
hats the leads the two one pitch swung on this
building up to a right field. It's a face hip,
it's up against the screen. In comes one raw him
comes two runs, and.

Speaker 5 (02:31:49):
It's a long single to get him two runs, and
Myers is twoth or two of the pitch hit on.

Speaker 1 (02:31:53):
The Yankees lead three to w so Big Mies delivers.
He's sent up there and he hit one about twenty

(02:32:15):
five feet off the ground against the wire screen, and
Bauer goes down the first base to run for him,
and Miles gets a tremendous hand as he goes off
the field, and the Yankee fans are deliriously delighted. And
there is coach cradhook for a trawling for time and
going out to the mound. This may be all for
rancor a three to one in favor of the Yankees.

(02:32:37):
Bauer has been announced the pitcher at first base, and
they are going to bring Joe happens. Does it happen
to batter this moment? It is Jack Batter. They won
not the left hand raft raw Jack batter who didn't
get very much time to throw. So Batter is coming

(02:32:58):
on and Johnny Miles All National League returns to the
scene where he's hit many a base hit here at Brooklyn,
and Popley hits a solid, high pinch hip single and
gets him two rods, free to one favor the Yankees.

(02:33:18):
First time that any team has scored it in one
inning more than one run, and the Yankees now in
the ninth inning lead free to one, and with Joe
Page on the my own case is tingle is sipping
over there, just got a smile on there as big
as a close slight of a watermelon. Frank I got
the hand as he leaves them own. Franker goes out

(02:33:44):
after eight and two paired innings. He got all but
the final out, and the first two runs for the
Yankees were put on by bases on ball. Franker retired
fourteen and straight and with one out in the ninth inning,
after retiring Henry for his fourteenth consecutive out, he walked

(02:34:05):
Barrow and that proved to be the undoing. After Demagio
fouled out the third and with Franker trying to get
the third out of the ninth inning, Brown laid in
with a solid single to right field and then came
the base on balls to Jean Woodling to load them up.
The pinch hit single by Johnny Mize, who is now
sitting comfortably back there in the Yankee bench, and Jack

(02:34:28):
matter Tall lean right handed out on the mount relieving
for Brooklyn. It's the first time that a Dodger's daughter
failed to finish Franker going to within one out. So
it is three to one in favor of the Yankees,
three to one. On that base hit, Woodling went around

(02:34:50):
the third base. Of course, Maze is a very ponderous runner.
That's why he was held at first. A faster man
might have made it a double. So we have the
Yankees at first third, Bauer on a first base, Matter
on the mound, second base from Jerry Coleman steps in

(02:35:14):
right hand, hit him in a crouch i field to
what left batter throws fastball is budded Paul. There's a
bid for a base hit surprise measurement. Bower balls strike
one Bowart first is ready to go on anything. You've
go out and play right field for the latter half
of the ninth inning. Woodling over third, of course, he's

(02:35:36):
ready to set sail I field to what left Coleman
off the three leaning in choking that bat batter checks first,
right handed pitches fastball in for a call, second strike,
nothing in two no balls, two strikes. Big Johnny Maize
probably had been on some great Saint Louis teams and

(02:35:58):
been over there with the Giants, got into a World
Series until this fall, and he's already more than repaid
the Yankees for whatever they paid for him, and they
got him from the Giant. This base hit, now, just
did that.

Speaker 3 (02:36:12):
Throw?

Speaker 1 (02:36:13):
There was power. There's a line r hit the center
film of the Yankee four runs, three of them got
on with based on balls. Now we have some action
down the Yankee bullpen. Fred Sandford, right hander, begins throwing
because this is a long inning, a fastball outside bar two. Correction,
that is not Sadford, That is Ali Reynolds who is

(02:36:34):
now throwing. Samford was throwing earlier, and it is Reynolds,
the pitching hero of the first game, strong right hander
working in the bullpen. Now for New York to get
ready in the event that pays, and he's into trouble
and nailing down this four one ball game. In the
ninth inning, batam checks first, pitches paid swings and slices
fowl in the lower third base stands Blomong.

Speaker 3 (02:37:02):
Good.

Speaker 1 (02:37:02):
I like to repeat what we said. Of the four
Yankee runs, three were scored by men who got on
with walks, two here in the ninth inning and one
in the third. That's quite a story and as much
as a no walks given to the Yankees the first
two games. Paige swings follows this one back, and there
was a hit and run play on that one because Coleman,

(02:37:22):
the running from first, was headed toward the still vacant
second base. The Yankees have exploded here in the ninth inning,
Frank Are opened the door with one out of walk
to Barrow, then with two out single to Brown a
based on Boss to who they loaded it up. A
pinch hit single by Johnny Myz knocks in two, and

(02:37:43):
Coleman has just single sharply off relief pitcher Jack Battatt.
Joe Page up there. It's his ball game to win.
All these runs belonged to him. Two two pitch swung
on and miss bract three and Paige strikes out. So
eight men batted in the top of the ninetheen, three
of them scored on free base hits. So the Yankees

(02:38:06):
now lead four to one. It's the first time that
any team has been more than one run away from
the opposition. And Paige, who has pitched the phenomenal efficiency,
came on in the fourth inning with the bases loaded.
That's when the Dodgers had their big chance. They had
the bases loaded. The ball game was then one in
one and Paige got all more on a file ball

(02:38:27):
to Henrik who caught the ball leaning against the first
pro spectators alongside the stands at first base, and then
he got to start on the ground ball second to first.
Ali Reynolds continues talling way down in the left field
corner for the Yankees. Bauer goes out to the right field.
Of course, he took over from Eyes who had pinch

(02:38:47):
hit for right field of Mapes. Now in the last night,
Page be called on to pitch to Hog and Snyder.
He now play Vader h I's seeing hospital on BA

(02:39:10):
big left hander Joe Paige all set kill stepping in
New York four looking one at the end of the game,
settling down to give the sign Page in a hurry,
shepherds little Day out there on the mound with his spikes.

Speaker 2 (02:39:25):
Yeh.

Speaker 1 (02:39:28):
After round too had left. The wind continues blowing into
left field. Page pumps, kicks, twist throws, and Hadji's bunning
follows the ball off he was funning for a base hit.
Figured that about the last thing the Yankees would expected him.
Alie Raynolds, who allowed no runs and won the first

(02:39:51):
game along with Henry's home run one and nothing continues
throwing down the bullpen being warmed up for Charlie Silvera.
He the insurance if you need him. Page works. There's
a ground ball, hits shoping down, a second coming up
with it cleanly, throw it over the person. Hodges was
easily off by about three steps, one up from one gone.
Last half of the nineteen eight Louis Omar, who is

(02:40:14):
all for three, is not gotting the ball out of
the infield, and I would say that Page is out
of Olmo. Where the bases loaded and one man retired.
Up until that situation in the fourth inning was the
key out of the ball game. Now Page works almost swings, drills,
the ball back in the left field is going a

(02:40:35):
long way back. It is in for a home run.
And then it's now four ten. Now Olmo running his
home run home steps on home plate and it's a

(02:40:55):
four or two ball games. He hit a curve ball
and drilled it well back in the straightaway left field
stand and the ball went about three hundred and sixty
five feet when it's landed. So it is now four
to two. Bruce Edwards, a second string catcher in a
right handed batteries being brought in from the Brooklyn bullpen.
Snyder is that replaced page deals of a fastball for

(02:41:20):
a call strike at the outside on that one. The
Yankees for the Dodger's two page works over fastball for
a call second strike. Page two honts to go and
a to run margin for a few ball games. Snyder

(02:41:43):
holding it stick down by the end over the closed stands,
I feel back in the left on him, pitches, swung on,
powered off, nothing can do fall back on the screen.
A few spectators of the crowd of thirty two seven

(02:42:04):
eighty eight. Now I started for the exit gates, but
the almost home run. Returning to their seats, Pages takes
the sign very coolly throws curts home misspect three and
sladders fuck up. So page now is one out the way.

(02:42:24):
The Yankees four, the Dodgers two in this third game
of the series, and just to the pitcher will be tomorrow. Well,
probably Eddie Lowpat he's been figuring to start most anytime
might start for the Yankees. And just who manager Shot
would come up with you don't know. Of course, the
outcome of this game makes a great deal of difference.

(02:42:46):
Each side of the camp Campanella right hand hitter swings
filed the ball back nothing in one, two gone, last
of the night. Edward's waiting on deck used to hit
four relief pitcher Banner in the event that Campanella can
save him a bat. As it stands now, Edward's on deck,

(02:43:08):
here's the tying run Yankees four to Campanilla swings followed
this one off, no balls, two strikes. Case is tangled.
Let's add an encouraging hoop and a hollow is the
steps to the front of the Yankee bench. Allows at
the page, and we are beginning to get a little rain.

(02:43:30):
It is starting to rain right now, first rain of
the day. The sky's are lefting overhead. As we pointed
out to you, they have been ominous all afternoon. Page works.
Campanella checks his swing on a low curveball and at
is ball one one ball, two strikes, and the column
that counts the Yankees for the Dodgers too. The Yankees,

(02:43:54):
after two men were retired, let go in the ninth inning,
and Johnny Mize and Joe Page see the type setters
in the various newspaper composing rooms all over the country
getting their names ready for the headline. One and two
pitch swung on a high file ball close to the
first base stand and into the stand. So the ball

(02:44:16):
game is still alive. I've all bounced three rows of
seats back and on a piece of concrete walkway, and
then bounced high up for midstin photographers suspended under the
upper deck behind first base. One and two. Well, you'd
had the feeling with this ballgame in its one oneness,

(02:44:40):
that something would have to detonate it, explode it, and
the Yankees did that in the ninth inning. The two
up our page trying to finish the ball game, nail
it down works again. One and two curve swung on
as a high fly ball back in the left deal.
Back goes Woodley, way back close to the stands. He
can't get it in there for a home run by Campanella.

(02:45:05):
So Campanella felt playing the left field stands, it just
goes in.

Speaker 5 (02:45:08):
After four three ball game and listen to the cowl. Wow,
this is getting to be.

Speaker 1 (02:45:23):
A most unpredictable series. And here at abits Field, where
anything can and usually does happen. Casey Steingle goes out
to the mound to talk to Joe Page, and Stingle
is going to go with Page. He's gonna stay with him.
And Rus never has a club hit more than two
home runs and one inning in the World Series. This

(02:45:47):
is a ninth time the two home runs have been
hit in one inning in a World Series ball game.
Yankees themselves as done it five times. So the Dodgers
sort of took the leaf out of their book. Two
home runs here in the night. Edwards takes a curve,
couldn't check his swing in time and of his strike

(02:46:08):
two No, the horse two strikes, nothing in two, Bruce
stepping in, so Pages once again within one strikes, final
out and the crowd is still waiting. Everybody's standing the
Yankees for the Dodgers.

Speaker 3 (02:46:29):
Three oh.

Speaker 1 (02:46:31):
Hold on, Page comes down. Edwards takes just outside four
ball while want to do you may have been setting
up something with that pitch, fastball just wide because you
never know what'll happened in the ball game. Both the
bullpens remain active. Right hand to Reynolds pitching hero Over

(02:46:53):
the first game working for New York in the left
field corner and left handed Joe happen for Brooklyn in
the right field corner. Happened trying to both then catching
Sam Narren Okay want to do so. Vara, who was
warming up Rhndo, stops to watch this Joe Page pitch
Page delivers. Edwards takes strike three call in the ball
game is over. Edward's unhappy about the decision. There was

(02:47:16):
a high fastball at the shoulders on the outside, cash
Rollo walking off the feel and that is the ball game.
Edwards takes a call third strike and that's the fourth
strack out the page and it gives him the win,
and the Yankees win the ball game fourty three, and
Ralph Franker is the losing her of course. So we

(02:47:40):
had a lot of excitement in the ninth inning, and
we got some scoring in the ninth inning that we
had not had at any other stage in the series.
So the Yankees win this one and go up now
two games to one. And coming up to the microphone,
mel Allen, mel see, you got the record book and
you've been looking over things and adding them up.

Speaker 3 (02:48:00):
How's it now?

Speaker 1 (02:48:02):
Well, we had a total of thirty nine strackhouts in
this World Series, and the thirty ninth on the course,
ended the third game of the World Series and gave
the Yankees a spine tingling four to three victory, as
a battling group of Brooklyn Dodgers refused to be counted
out of it even though they were down four to
one the last the ninth inning, and they blasted two

(02:48:24):
balls into the seats to get right back into contention.
And as a matter of fact, all the Dodger runs
today were scored on balls that were hit all the
way Pheebee rees and the two in the ninth inning,
Louis Almo and Roy Campanella. Joe Page, who was the
key of the Yankee success this year from a pitching standpoint,

(02:48:46):
and who pitched them into that cunnant, if you want
to look at it that way last Saturday, when he
went six and two thirds innings of one hit pitching
in relief against the Boston Red Sox, who came on
today in the fourth inning with one out and thus
won five and two thirds innings today and did not
allow a hit until the eighth inning, and then gave

(02:49:08):
up two in the ninth. So he pitched one hit
ball until the ninth inning and then gave up those two,
and they were two big ones. They were all the way.
So Page got credit for the victory. And you must say,
in the final analysis, these two clubs are still just
as close as they can be. Three ball games all
decided by one run, and if they have to be decided,

(02:49:31):
that's just the minimum the thing be decided by. So
that'll show you how close this situation is. And so
as you attempt to pick the heroes on the day,
Joe Page, who came very near not being a hero
with a Dodgers teeing off on him in the last
the ninth, comes through to win his second World Series game.

(02:49:54):
He won one and lost one in the nineteen forty
seven World Series. Joseph Francis Paid age thirty one year
old left hander from Springdale, pennsylvani You're born in Cherry
Valley came on to save the day for Tommy burn Off.
Boom phebe Reese spanked that home run early in the
game in the fourth inning to tie it up at

(02:50:16):
one in one after the Yankees had taken a one
run lead in the third off Ralph Franca. Franco had
walked Mapes to start the third inning. Then after Coleman
struck out, Tommy Byrne singled to send mates around the
third and he score on Rozuto's fly ball to right field.
Reese's homer off Burn in the fourth inning tied it up.
That was the first hit off Burn, who had gone

(02:50:38):
through the lineup without lying a hit in the first
three innings, and that proved to be Tommy Burn's undoing
when after Mixus had lined solowly the center to Demago
poorn out Pillo single the left, and then Burn grew
wild and walked Robinson and Hodges to load the bases
with one out of the fourth inning. That looked as
if the Dodgers were going to cash in, but that's
when Page came in and he got almos in. Snyder

(02:51:00):
got out of that jam and was brilliant into the
ninth inning when Amo and Campanella hit those homers offensively.
It was big Johnny Mees, who had reached major league
stardom but who had never been able to participate in
the World Series, and it was Miz who had pinched
it safely yesterday for the Yankees and a losing cause,
who came on to the ninth inning after Ralph Franco,

(02:51:21):
who had pitched beautiful baseball all the way, who had
pitched a two hitter to the ninth inning, and who
had gotten the first man out of the ninth had
walked Barra and had gotten to bad Joe, and with
two down, Brown singled and Woodling walked to load them up.
And then it was that Big John stepped in and
lined a single off the right field screen to score
t and Coleman's single off Relief pitcher Jack Banna sent

(02:51:41):
the third one in and that proved to be the
winning run. So it was a thrilling ball game all
the way, where the totals the Yankees' four runs, five
hit snow eras, five left on and the Dodgers three runs,
five hitsnow eras and six men left on. Joe Page,
the winning pitcher, Ralph Franco, who went eight and two
thirds innings, is the losing pitcher, his second World Series loss. Well,

(02:52:05):
we are having a little more excitement. It's building day
by day, and we still have a long way to go. Remember,
We'll be back on the air again tomorrow at twelve
forty five Eastern Standard time, but do remember that on

nine World Series from Evattsfield in Brooklyn. Make a note
