Speaker 1 (00:00):
For five dollars. Deal buys two pairs of thirty children's
shoes or ladies dress. Law oh I got for the Hill.
It's a beautiful bost stadium in status with the nationally
exceeding the schedule mander there which I haven't all the
Sangos Cardinals against the New York Mets, Galen Cisco for
the Mets, and Kurt Simmons father Santos Cardons, and our
guests on the Dugout Show. One of the great man
(00:20):
of baseball, the manager of the Mets, Casey Stengle. You'll
hear from Casey in just one moment that for the
Hills for shoes top service. I guess on the dug
Out Show met manager Casey Stangle. Casey, I'm sure that
you realize everybody in the world of sports was happy
(00:41):
to hear that you're going to be back as manager
next year.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yes, that's two.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
I have received many many telegrams friends that have been
pulling for me most all my life and from a
baseball standpoint, since you know that they're interested in my
years as a player, I would say a managerial career.
I'd have to say that that was for a number
of people that are elderly that seen me play baseball,
(01:11):
and also so that I was rather successful as a
manager in a number of years.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
You never lose your enthusiasm for the game. You get older,
like everybody else gets older too, for that matter, but
you never lose your zest. Casey, well, I feel.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Healthy enough, I'm strong enough, I'm quick enough. And if
you feel well right, you ought to stay managing.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
And if you were a man that.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Doesn't feel well, you should stay managing in the major leagues.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
You should decide.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Let somebody else do it, because a well man always
does a better job.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Casey, going into a series like this with one of
the teams fighting for a pennanty, you give your team
any cup talk before the series started.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Well I did the first day we went over the hitters. Naturally,
you should do that. You should try to win every
day that you're been in the leg. And up to
this year, we've had so many difficulties to play a
number of the teams. The only team, and I think
that we bothered was Cincinnata and the last series, Cincinnati
(02:15):
came in and caught us playing very poor baseball, and
they actually put them back in the pennant race. And
then when they come here to Saint Louis, the scrub
here is at good baseball club, well Mannies, and the
players are terrivic players. And I believe that in this series,
the first game, they were just unfortunate that hard hit
(02:37):
balls were caught by my receivers and the pitcher, Jackson,
pitched two marvelous a game when it was one to nothing.
The game yesterday, everybody knows that the Cardinals had an
off day, and you can't catch the pitchings. You had
to be poor because you can't go up into the
grand stand and catch the ball. And therefore that's where
they were handicapped.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Chestinay, Casey, in all your years, can you remember a
race where three teams went into the final day with
a chance.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
No.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
I have been in one game in one year. I
think it was forty nine when I was with the Yankees,
in which the Red Sox were a game ahead of me,
and then we evened it up and we.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Took to it.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
We had to play a series. We took two out
of three and just nosed them out of the pennant.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Casey, which of these three teams are still fighting it
out for the punnet? You think would have the best
chance against the Yankees in the World Series.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Well, to tell you the truth, I think that all
three clubs will only be a handicapped with one thing,
and that's the fact that they've had to extend their
pitching staff too much at the end of a season. Now,
that really could affect the nation to the league club,
But I honestly believe that your club here at Saint
Louis will give them a splendid battle because you're skilled
(03:53):
in a number of ways and has speed, and I
think Cincinnatis would do it splendid up in the world.
I really figured that that's just would be great. If
they could have four or five days rest the rest
of pitches set.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Especially if there's a playoff, then the Yankees ought to
be in a great shape. Well, if there is a playoff, yes,
they'd get the rest, maybe too long, although they don't
lie you the rest too long. They make you work
out every day of the World Series and keep you
on the edge. Casey, do you see them nuts coming
out of the wilderness for next year? Well, yes, I do.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
In some ways, we get more home runs than we
did last year or the year before. We got younger
personnel on the team. I think McMillan, he's helped our
ball club at short stop. He's kept our pitching better.
And I think that Hunt is a very good ballplayer.
He was voted by the ballplayers as the best second
(04:49):
baseman or for this season. And I honestly believe that
Hickman is a very good man and capable in the
outfield and hit balls distant. Christopher now is a much
better better than he ever was in his life. He
used to get only play against right handed pitching, I
mean left handed pitching, and now I think he's very splendid.
He can hit some of the right handed pitches better
(05:12):
than anybody that's on our staff. I would have to
say that he's much improved better.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Casey said, it's a challenge for a ball club who
was not in the race to be able to play
one of the contenders and have a hand in deciding
who wins it.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Why, yes, you know, but you you really have to
go out there and put doubt. The man is supposed
when he signs the contract to play until the last
day and the ninth inning. And that's the reason why
our club, maybe at this year's time, is doing very
good we lost two games in Milwaukee. I thought because
(05:47):
we didn't have the ability. But I think here Jackson
just was a little too great to allow your club
to get on basis at handicap.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Casey, and thanks for this chat and continued success to you.
And last time I mentioned it, I was going to
give you a bull of a seventeen jewel watch. While
I told you the time of the day and the
time of the month, you also asked me to tell
you the time to take your picture out, and I
hope you have to take several pictures out.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Today's good five is you had to have that scene.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
See okay we are he's lied. My book Lamaria age
long group or not rule garmination on the poor body,
get to know which brenarium, get to know flavor of it,
and my the American tobacco company Naper's all now payments.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
The garret bo who are particularly locked eye, no.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Boarders, cargo rape broone. A beautiful baseball day in Saint Louis.
Hello again, everybody. This is Harry Carry with Jerry Gross
with Ray May and Cincinnati on the final day of
the baseball season. Maybe a perfect day for baseball. The Cardinals,
(07:18):
who are tied for first place with the Cincinnati Reds,
one game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies, who play the
Reds in Cincinnati today. It'll be Cisco for the next
today Simmons for the Cardinals. Let's quickly go to Cincinnati
and Roy May to see what the pitching's situation is
over there, right you're hearing, get up, you don't know
we want and good lady at the gorgeous day right
(07:40):
goodly gutting the Denver during the sixties, the Who's stunning victors,
the running of Farmer Lewis Jim Bunning or the Bills
who recordly the un and April and another right hand
of Gon Touris or the red Who's who record is
nine and twelve. We're going to have a capacity crowd
here and there's a lot of the bight men the area, Gladys,
(08:01):
a few of the reason we think louis very.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
I find Ryan.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
We'll be coming back to you. So you got the situation.
Then there's a surprise. We thought maybe Maloney with pitch
for the Reds, but Johnson Tauris we shut the Phillies
out one to nothing last week in Philadelphia. We'll be
pitching for our Cincinnati and here it will be Curt
Simmons pitching for the Cardinals and Galen Cisco for the
(08:24):
New York Mets, and we'll be back with the starting
lineups and then the exciting play by play in just
one moment, when the days been come and the queen's
been prow Brother, you guess western and you need a reward?
Well again, Joy Camp, this is mild. I'd like to
(09:00):
hear you grin if you just meat by a bitter fear. Yes, sir,
Bush is at small more next harm that fact garlic
good by bushes rud the way that beer was meant
to be brewed, the natural way. So pick Bush.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
It's so joy game.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
With the very the umpires are coming down the line
at the moment Johnny Keene, the Cardinal manager, cases strangled
the New York Met manager who is our guest from
the Dugout Show, becoming out to exchange. The official batting
(09:47):
artist can't how to give you the lamps for today's game.
Bringing up today is Jerry Gross. All right, I thank
you very much. The win we might mention right now
is blowing from the left field corner toward the right
field line, and it would help a ball hit up
toward the right field bleachers out towards center possibly blow
it up. It could be a big factor in this
(10:07):
afternoon's ball game. A look at the lineups in the
ball game for Casey Stengles Mets leading off and at
second base, it'll be Bobby Klaus Klaus in the leadoff position.
McMillan Roy McMillan will hit second. He'll be the shortstop
batting third, and a man who has ripped us all
year long, Joe Christopher, the right handed hitting right feeler.
(10:28):
In this afternoon's game, batting in the cleanup spot, it
will be Jim Hickman. Hickman, a former cardinal. Hickman will
be in center field. He'll hit cleanup in the fifth spot.
The third baseman Charnie Smith Smith betting fifth down at third.
Bob Taylor Art will be the cashier for Stingles Mets.
He'll be catching Galen Cisco Taylor batting sixth, working behind
(10:52):
the plate. Ed Trane Pool, who has really hurt us
in this series so far and hurt us all year long,
as Harry has mentioned, betting seventh. Green Pool will be
the first baseman, and George Altman in left field altman
hitting eighth in the order, out in left Galen Cisco,
with the record in six victories and eighteen setbacks, will
(11:12):
start on the mound four stangles. Coos record against the
red Birds this year one victory and one setback is
earned run average on the season three point forty five.
So Cisco the right hander warming up down the right
field line par to the ball game. Simmons already has
concluded his warm up to our left down the left
(11:33):
field line up, and let's now take a look at
the Cardinals starting lineup. Manager Johnny Keen will go with
Kirk Flood leading off in center, Lou Brock out in
left field, betting second. White will hit third.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
He'll be at first. There go the cargo.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
In a final game of the regular season nineteen sixty four,
Captain Kenny Boyer will see hitting clean up MC third.
Nick Broke bats sixth or rather fifth, then will be
a shortstop. McCarver will be catching. Mike Shannon out in
right field. Dal Maxville, playing in place of the injured
Julie and Javier, who hurt his back in the ball
(12:10):
game yesterday. Dal Maxville will have the job at second base.
He'll be betting eight and Kirk Simmons is out on
the mound to start for the cardinalsies eighteen to nine,
one and two against the Mets. Right now, the capacity
crowd our national anthem. I got on the Hardy Broughts
(13:55):
and singing the knife and anthem before we give you.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
The play by a player.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Take ten seconds for a station that entification. This is
the Cardinals Baseball Network. Gim Rokson Caream works up from
Saint Louis. Red weather brings mosquitoes out, repel mosquitoes with
comicide repellent to safe repellent comicide with full way repellent action.
(14:23):
This is Jerry Gross with Harry Carry back at Bush Stadium,
go win sixteen miles an hour, blowing out from left
field the line toward the right fale line. We're set
to go with the final game of the regular season.
And here to bring you all the exciting action the
voice of the Cardinals. Here's Harry Carry Okay, Jerry, a
beautiful day and we're all subt to go. Kurt Simmons,
(14:44):
who's puts good ball against the Mets, argue are and
Galen Cisco who's done likewise against the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Simmons has won one and lost two. He lost to
the Mets four to three on a two out ninth
inning home run July the ninth, and three to two
on July nineteenth. Here in Saint Louis, he beat the
Nets two to one. September to twenty second. In New York,
(15:06):
Galen Cisco lost to the Cardinals five to one May
the ninth, beat them two to one on September to
twenty third. A top right handrew who always has pitched
twelve against the card Eddie Vorego, the played unpive. We're
all set to go. Why, let's see if everybody's equipped
with air transistors. You've got transistors around? Okay, we'll keep
(15:33):
your posted. That all set to go on. Here is
Bobby Klaus hitting two twenty one, four homers and sixteen
runs bout it in. Kurt Simmons gets ready to win.
As Jerry told, you're blowing strongly towards right field. Here's
the pitch on the left and it's a fastball outside.
It'll be Klaus McMillan and Christopher here in the first.
(15:55):
The Mets have won the first two games of the series.
The nationally. Grace is in the two team tie. Here's
the pitch on the lay. Klaus takes a strike over
the outside carn It got high and not even's it
up a ball in the strip. The Saint Louis Football
Cardinals lead to Washington Redskins fourteen to ten in the
second beriad one bar, one straight Bobby Klaus, who had
(16:19):
a home run yesterday. Kurt Simmons getting ready into the
wind of the pitch on the lay. There's a fly
ball right field broad way back. He's there, He's gonna
make the catch. He died go That bar got up
into the wind, which is growing strongly towards right veil.
Now Simmons, being a left handed pitcher, will have an
(16:40):
advantage so far as mellifying the left handed batters in
the net lineup. The Cardinals will be facing a right hander,
so they're left handed batters. Drock White and McCarver will
be helped by the wind. Here's the pitch now to
Ery mcmillar and it's a fastballs right car hit the
(17:00):
outside corner. After eve one strike and no ball. Electricity
in the air. You could cut over the night A
super charged afternoon in Saint Louis. One strike, no ball,
the wind up, the pitch on the way here it
is straight two car basketball after the ease, A lot
of possibilities. The Cardinals could win the pennan today. The
(17:24):
Cardinals could lose a penny. Today. The Cardinals could finish
in a two way tie. Today, the Cardinals could finish
in a three way tie today. Two strikes, no balls.
The pitch on the way here it is a little
loll and outside. Two strikes out of all, one out
in the first. Roy McMillan, the veteran shot stop, batting
(17:46):
two fourteen with one homer and twenty five runs by
of day out the wine. Here's the pitch on the way,
a bouncing ball filed on the third day's line. West
Western coaching over there. Two strikes and of the ball.
Robinson coaching in first Western at third went out and
(18:09):
nobody on the ball game and the top of the
first inning. Here's Simmons winding the pitches on the way
slow cler fold back out of play into the stands
first souven here today, two strikes and the ball. The
Yankees clinched their pennanty yesterday. They know they're going to
be in the world's areas, but the National League doesn't
know yet any one of three ball clubs might play
(18:31):
the Yankee. Two strikes and the ball went out.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Nobody on.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
Mc millan the hitty. Here's Simmons into the window. Here's
the pitch on the way. It's a little bit outside.
Jess barely missed the strikes off. The pills went down
an order and the top of the first that sins
about it. Two balls, two strikes went out. McK millan
(18:58):
about it. How the signal give it into the wind up?
Here is the pitch on the way, swing on a
little pomp fly short right field, coming in forward as Shannon,
he's there, He's got it. McMillan. Pfly Shannon and right.
That's too long. Seems strange not to see how the
air at second days but the injured is hit yesterday
(19:23):
and darn Maxville is playing in his place.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Back.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
How the air might be sideline setled Ay two in
a out Joe Christopher the batter hitting three or one
with sixteen homers and seventy six runs about it in
Simmons gets set the wind up. Now the pitch is
on the way. Slow Curvey burns down the third base line,
and it's going to be a base hit feud. If
(19:49):
a bunny picked the perfect pitch on a change of pace,
Christopher bunned down the third base line, there was no
play at all. Let's say hit he bunted that way
in the first inning yesterday there and beat it out
the lord the bases. Simmons is one is last five
decisions at his last sixty see but this ball club
(20:20):
gives them trouble. Here's Jim Hickman with eleven homers and
fifty seven rd eyes binning two fifty nine. Now the
stretch from the belt. Don't betch here it is. It's
a fastball, lower bore, one one bar, the no stretch.
Hickman yesterday not a couple of hits, drove in two
(20:42):
runs in the first inn Now the stretch by Simmons.
Here's the fifth a capacity crowd on half a dramatic
(21:04):
setting for the final game of the season, final game.
Maybe one ball, one strike the stretch, the pets hi,
pop fly, We're gonna be out of the first inning.
I think Maxville is out. Shannon coming in and he's
got the ball. Hit pounds hop to Shannon and shot
(21:27):
right one hitcone runs, no airs.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
One left.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
We go on to the bottom half of the first inning.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
No score in the ball.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Game, particular about teeth. You bet I'm particular, and my
pellmills prove it particular about teeth, and you bet I'm particular,
and Mike found mount you hear it everywhere. Why because
(21:55):
pell mells neural wildness means just one thing, smooth, freezing flavor.
Particular people take particular places. And in the girt taste
of tail, now the papers drending over hundred around in
that particular clue taste to get particular place in right
(22:19):
particular beeple to in the girt taste of tail, now
be particular. Smoke a long cigarette that's long on flavor
by now the hell famous cigarettes outstanding and they are
prim from the American Tobacco Company. Before christ flood leads off,
(22:41):
let's go to Cincinnati. Rye anything happening. No score here
in the bottom of the first inning, nobody on and
there's one out with Pico Luise the better. And by
the way, as you think, Louis, there's a rubber stiff
breeze blowing toward the right field here and it should
be a definite help to the left handed hitter. You
might see a few in the right field leaky sarada.
(23:02):
The wind condition is the same as hair, with the
right field section having the wind a dunnage. All right.
Here is Kurt Flood deleted up, batting three eleven for
the season, and this little fellows had some year two
hundred and ten hits. Galen Sisco on the hill. He
(23:22):
is won. His record isn't a good one, but he
pitches tough days fall He's won six lost, eighteen all
set to go. Former Ohio State University star Kurt Flood
with four homers and forty five runs bout it. Then
hitting three to eleven into the wind of the pitch
on the way the Kerr Barm Merri strike car the
(23:44):
good overhanded curve one striking the ball Bush Bavarian. There
your host. What an exciting fining. Three teams with a
chance the wind dependent on the final day.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
Here's the pitch Kerr.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
A little bit outside that evens it up against Cisco.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Came of the overhanded curve ball.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Bob Hawke Taylor from a Tropolis, Illinois, behind the plate
for the Mets, goes out to talk to Galen Cisco
right handed door digging in. Barn Benson coaching at third,
georsh Schiltz at first.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Now the sign give it.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
One ball, one strike into the wind up. Here's the
pitch on the leg. It's a fastball, low ball too.
Two balls and the strike, the wind blowing towards right field.
As we have to keep repeating because it might be
a factor. Two balls and a strike. Galen Cisco delivers
(24:45):
here it is. There's a line drive in the center,
but it's going to be caught. Hickman is there and
he has front line to Hickman, and Senato's one out.
Here's little Bronck. Here's a guy who could take advantage
of that win. Batting three to fourteen of fourteen homers.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
Fifty eight runs out of them.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Left hand batter up there, lou Brock is left bristless tape.
The wind blows strongly towards the pavilion roof. Down the line.
Here's the pitch on the way to bron and it's
a low rimy. Quickly, what happened to the bottom of
the first that went down? An orders go right the
(25:31):
end of one. There is no bar here in Concinnati.
I know score at the end of one in Cincinnati.
As you heard, here's the pitch on the way rockets,
a base hit up the middle, a ground ball in
the center fair and Brock is our there's gonna try
for a second. Here's a poll he's in there. Kim
Hickman momentarily fumbled the ball and Brock never even has
(25:54):
a tape. Probably they're hitting an air That's what it is,
Lou Atimy. We're looking forward at doing is the Foural series.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
If the Red Birds make.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
It, the scarboard operator flashes the air sign. So we
have a man in scoring position with one out. Why
hitman with a great arm, you know, just momentarily fumbled
the ball and brocknived. It has a bead that indication.
There's no pressure when you can do things like that.
Here's Bill White batting three h two, twenty homers one
(26:28):
hundred r the eyes listen to this crowd. The perverse
is building a bird early. The pet's too white. Here
it is a line drive to the shot stop who
leaps and makes the cat white line to McMillan, who
leaped to grab the ball. And here's why you're hitting
two ninety four. Why are you with twenty four homers
(26:50):
in one hundred and eighteen runs byt of this dotting
two ninety four. White hitting his ball good, but right
out McMillan, the shot stop who leaped and grabbed him.
Little Brock in storing position. We're in the first inning.
Gale and Cisco beat the Cardinals two to one the
last time he faced them. Signal, give it ready for
(27:19):
the pitch now, the stretch and the hesitation and the
pitches on the way it is whoa inside almost hit him.
One ball in those strikes. Two out in the bottom
of the first no scar Kenny Boyer hoping to drive
(27:49):
in the first run of the day. There's the stretch,
Cisco ready from the belt, and here's the pitch inside again.
He's crowding him with his fastball, and so it's two walls,
no strike, a runner at second base, two outs. Beautiful
(28:11):
baseball afternoon in Saint Lord. Barrier straddles a plate the
stretch to hesitation the pets outside ball three, three and
nothing now on Bayer takes a look at burn duns
and they might turn them loose. Here Barrior can pump
that ball into the stands in either direction. Three balls
(28:37):
and those strikes, two out right handed, Dotter digging in
gale and Cisco getting ready over the head down to
the belt. Here's a fifth line drive fowl into the
stands left fail they turn them loose with three balls
and those strikes, and the Cardinals certainly have an approach
(29:00):
this game as if they're under any pressure. Rock with
darring base running. Kenny Bayer allowed to hit a three
and nothing Pits which he had hired, but followed three
balls one strike, two out a man in scoring position.
First inning. Like to get out in front of these
(29:21):
fellows lunch now to sign. The last three games and
nuts of one have all been from the Cardinal. They
beat us two to one on the twenty third in
New York and then last eight in a row, and
(29:41):
then won the first two games of the series. So
the only team they have beaten in two weeks of
the Cardinals. Three balls, one strike, Hawk Taylor talking to
Galen Cisco. Few would have full afternoon, absolutely perfect, an
(30:01):
Indian summer day, bright warm Bribian sunshine with a delightfully cool,
invigorating breeze, a ballpark jam packed a dramatic setting for
the final game of the season. Ray balls and a
strike the strakes and the pitch, not a bowyer stake.
(30:26):
Two a curveball hit the outside corner. He didn't like it,
and I was three and two. That was a curve
that Cisco broke over handed, didn't grow up, would be
next boyer up there a runner and scoring position in
two out ray balls, two strikes. Cisco gets sucked, rock
(30:51):
the league, the crowd anxious for a base hit. Now
the stretch, the hesitation from the bow and the pits
or four he walked in pardners that runners at first
(31:12):
and second with two hours, here's the growth who could
put us out in front? Groat hitting two ninety one
with one homer in sixty nine runs out of the
Grot hits them wall deepen the right center him and
(31:36):
he's a home run threat today. The way the wind
is blown because any ball hit deepened that direction is
going to be carried well. Now the stretch from the bow,
the pitch to growth. Here it is. It's a strike
over the outside corner at the knee dick growth letter
(31:57):
in trut stop right handed bout it runners at first
and second and two outs. Now the signal given the
hesitation the pitch on the way slice fall out of
(32:17):
plays in the hole, strike two. He was trying to
go in the right field, but Cisco threw the ball
inside to him, which made it difficult, and he hit
the ball off his fists. Mayor Tucker is sitting in
down in the cardinal boxing mister and missus Boyce two
(32:42):
strike snowballs right handed. It are digging in Kail and
Cisco ready. Now the strake rode in the hole. Two
strikes and nothing the pitch from the beat, and here
it is, oh boy barely missed the strikes. All anything
(33:04):
going on quickly in Cincinnati riot. There is no one.
Then on Cockley drop the dingle in the left field.
There's one out and Gony Gaylor will be the better wide.
So the Phillies are batting in the second anyway, one
on one out. Here is did Growth with a count
(33:27):
of two strikes and the ball signal given runners at
first and second. Galeen Cisco gets ready. Here's the pitch
on the way outside kerve ball two and the count
(33:49):
evens at two and two. Galen Cisco, Bryan a hit
those corners. Guys barely missed that time. Two balls, two strikes.
This fellow once he gets you leaning, will jam you
with his fastball, as he did on the second strike
to growth. Two balls, two strikes. Right hand hitter waits
(34:15):
now the stretch from the boat the pitch to growth,
and here there is a bouncing bald and he might
be over the pitch. Is going to have to cover
theirs that Tassi he is up. Group bounces out from
crane pool to Cisco and it is no run, one hit,
no airs, two left at the end of one in
(34:36):
Saint Louis, the Philly, the Cardinals nothing, the Mets nothing.
We're going to the top of the second in the year,
and Charlie Smith, who's a home run thread, he's at
nineteen of them this year, steps up to the plate,
batting two forty with fifty seven rbi. Right hand hitter
(34:56):
digging in, no score. We're going to the second in it.
Kurt Simmons get set and they'll wind up the pitches.
On the way. There's a high top fly going towards
left field. Growth goes out, calls for the ball, he's
under it, he's got it, went away. Charlie Smith topped
the groat in short left, went out, and I'll bring
(35:19):
up Bob Taylor nickname Hawk from Metropolis, Illinois. Ed crane
pull with the next right hand in vider up there
(35:40):
tailor Cardinals on the half of the second and lead
off with Macarver, Shannon and Naxville. Here's the pitch. It's
a fastball going away, one ball, no stripes. Kurt Simmons
crying for his nineteenth victory. Now to wind up pitch,
and here it is. It's a strike over the outside corner.
(36:03):
He threaded the needle that time. One ball in, one strike,
one man out. Here's a pitch on the way, slow
curve outside, two balls in a string, mob Taylor to
hit it. We're in the second Inny. I had a
(36:26):
signal giving here's a pitch on the way. There's a
drive way back way back in the left center. It
my ay Brock makes a chacon. Don't cat, Holy Tower,
believe the ball. Red Brock a backhanded kustrein catching left
center hur remarkable play.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
Two away, Holy Cow, I've.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
Never seen one to match Rack. He didn't seem to
have a chance, and the windy blowing away taking the
ball away from him. He just outran the ball. A
spectacular backhanded hue string touched his deep left center while
running at full speed. Here's any cream pulled down left
(37:17):
hand hitter the line. They'll pitch on the way line
and the shot center flood coming on. He's there. The
inning is of her, so the nuts go down one, two,
three banks to a remarkable play. Listen to the hand
that Luck is getting as he comes in here, liss
(37:38):
it hand.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
It's nothing across.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
At the end of an inning and a half. No
score in this ball.
Speaker 5 (37:50):
Again, keep your eyes open, friend. If it hasn't happened yet,
it's bound to happen.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
Soon. You'll see a sleek, elegant new.
Speaker 5 (38:00):
Car you don't recognize. You'll find yourself wondering what it is,
and I'll tell you right now to save.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
You the worry.
Speaker 5 (38:08):
The big beautiful car is the all new Mercury for
nineteen sixty five.
Speaker 1 (38:14):
You've never seen a.
Speaker 5 (38:15):
Mercury like this before, because there's never been a Mercury
like this before.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
It's longer, more.
Speaker 5 (38:22):
Luxurious, clearly in the continental tradition. And once you get
a chance.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
To look it over closely, once you take it out
for a test drive, you'll know.
Speaker 5 (38:32):
Right off there's nothing like it in the medium price field.
See drive Admire the all new Mercury for sixty five
at your nearest Saint Louis area Mercury dealer.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
Yess to get an idea about the excitement that exists.
Here a scarboard man. Then the top of the second
for the the that's saying nothing. He put the bottom
of the second up. Put the top of the second out.
Who's excited. Here's McCarver.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
De let it off.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
Tim could take advantage of his breeze. We're in the
bottom half of the second inning, a game marked by
a remarkable catch by lou Bron. How the signal give it?
Here's the line up and the pitch on the left.
It's a curveball into the dirt. Ball one, one ball,
(39:27):
no strike. Right, there's nothing nothing at the end of
one and Cincinnati in a moment.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
Will.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
Flash to Rome over there. One ball, no strike, left
handed bat, a latting Tim McCarver. Here's a pitch by Cisco.
It's a strike. Call quickly, Ray, anything happened in the
top of the second.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
We're at the way into the bottom of the precond
Now Harry phil Lowe's gore. The Rep's coming the back
with Robin bon Gonson.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
The network, all right, go. At the end of an
inning and a half in Cincinnati, Tim McCargo with a
count of one ball, one strike, left handed Bouder hitting
two eighty four of the pitch on the leg, ball inside,
just barely missed the inside corner. Galon Cisco pitches to
good spots. Two balls and a strike. Mike Shannon will
(40:22):
be next. We're in the second inning those card That's
where it is in Cincinnati with a Phillies and the
reds now the sign given two balls, one strike and
wind up. Here's a pitch on the left, hot shot.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
It's curve far down and left their line.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
Here's the carver around for He's gonna bet a stecond
with it. Out of all we hit the ball right
off the back a double car McCargo. He didn't get
around on that bar and he hit it off the
end of the back. He didn't really hit it hard.
It hit the back bare and trickled into the cart.
Bull pay in left fail. So the Cardinals have a
(41:02):
lead off double hair in the second. He hit that
ball Harry right off his right hip. Actually looked his door.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
The ball might have shot in it.
Speaker 1 (41:10):
It would have been a ball, but he hit it
off the hip, unlocked himself somehow, and we have a
runner on second with nobody else, and Mike Shannon will
be the batter here. The Cardinals trying to break out
in front, something that haven't been able to do neither one.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Of these.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Two games previously in the series, lost one to nothing
Friday night, fifteen to five yesterday. Here's the stretch, and
now they'll pitch on the way. He's fouled tips at
strike one. Mike Shannon hitting two sixty two. He's had
nine homers and forty two runs by the day. The
Reds are batting in the bottom of a second at
(41:50):
Cincinnati with no score. The Cardinals are batting in the
bottom of the second in Saint Louis and no score.
One striking the ball now, the signal given right hand
by the waiting Galen cisco Rod shouldered right handed, takes
(42:11):
his time, gets his signed now from the bow. The
pitch is on the way, hold it back, trying to
hit the right field. Two strikes and no balls. He's
in a hole now.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
McCarver let off with a numble.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
Shannon up there now with dal Maxville doing next, followed
by Kurt Simmons, who's not a bad hitting pitcher. Last
of the second inning, right hand hitter digging in cisco
very methatical, deliberate worker out there. He's in a hurry,
(42:53):
had nothing to do after today until next spring. Two
strikes and no ball. Now the sign takes a lot
of time. He's running off from the beat and here's
the pitch on the way. There's a lane, drag, a
left fad. It's gonna drop over for a base and
(43:14):
he's run around third base. He's gonna cry to fair.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
Here's a third of the plate.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
He is safer.
Speaker 2 (43:19):
Channon Crass for record, pays out.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
Tenon singles to left scoring McCarver. But he's out trying
to take second on the third of the plate, which
was cut off by the third basement. Charlie Smith and
fire down the Bobby Crops. So the Cardinals are out
in front. Wonder nothing on Shannon's forty third run batted in.
Let's pause quickly that there's the Cardinals baseball network. Kah,
(43:47):
don't care whats up? M Saint Louis. Concrete and steel
are important to progress. They move from mind the milk,
will that cannon ball fate? This is Harry carry with
Jerry Gross at First Stadium in Saint Louis, with Roy
(44:10):
May and Cincinnati covering me. Pennant fight for you. Maxville
takes the first pitch outside one ball and those strikes.
Here's a pitch side arm and it's bounce fall One't
done nothing in favor of the card Well, my friends
(44:38):
over the Donos sent over a redbird cushion or pillow.
We're using it. Maybe it'll bring us some luck today.
One ball and one strike. Here's a pitch on the way.
Maxville swings and pops up easy. Uh second basement there. Hey,
(45:00):
the wind almost gave him trouble and Klaus had to
make a one handed stave. Two hour down. Here's Kurt Simmons,
will pitcher one't do nothing in favor of the Red
Guards win to fint him of the second. It's the
first time in this three game series if the Cardinals
have ever led where the victory the Cardinals are sure
(45:23):
of at least the time. If they win, the very
worst they can do is playing Cincinnati tomorrow, and the
best they could do would be the have clinched the pennant.
Here's a pitch to Simmons. He founded down If the
(45:45):
Cardinals win and the Reds lose, the Cardinals will be
the National League champion. If the Cardinals win and the
Reds win, there'll be a playoff in Cincinnati starting tomorrow,
with the second game here two, and the third game,
if necessary, here Wednesday. If the Philly at the Reds
(46:09):
lose and we lose, there'll be a three way tie.
Here's a pitch strike call the fastball, two strikes and
the ball. I'll double by McCarver and a single by
Shannon has given the Cardinals the lead here in the
second inning. Now the line. Here's the pitch on the
way a little outside and the count two strikes and
(46:33):
the ball. If the Cardinals win and the Reds lose,
the Cardinals will be the National League champion. If the
Cardinals win and the Reds win, there'll be a playoff
in Cincinnati starting tomorrow, with the second game here Tuesday,
and the third game, if necessary, here Wednesday if the Philly.
(47:01):
If the Reds lose and we lose, there'll be a
three way tie. Here's a pitch strike call, the fastball
two strikes and no ball. A double by mcarber and
a single by Shannon has given the Cardinals the lead
here in the second in here now the line. Here's
the pitch on the way, a little outside, and the
(47:25):
count two strikes and the ball. There's no score at
Cincinnati with the Reds biding in the second two strikes,
one ball left handed, by the ways, Galen Cisco gets
set the wind, and here's the pitch on the way,
(47:46):
a bouncing ball to the left of the third basement.
A great stop and now the throw. He is out
as cream Pool made a one handed pickup of the
low throw. So there was a fine play all the
way around. One run, two hits, no airs, and at
the end of two innings in Saint Louis, the Cardinals
won them.
Speaker 2 (48:03):
That's nothing.
Speaker 1 (48:08):
Before we go on to the top of the third,
let's go to our man in's Incinnati, right, Harry.
Speaker 2 (48:14):
We're now at the end of two.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
Marty Heel just flies deep the winner to read tired
of eight. So we're going into the Verde Still no
score in Cincinnati. Okay, nothing nothing up there, so we're
a little bit better off. We're leading one to nothing.
Here is Jorge Jorman to lead it off against Simmons,
and the first pitch is right at his head. And
he ducks out of the way. Ball one one bar
(48:39):
of no strikes. Nobody on and nobody out.
Speaker 2 (48:41):
The ball.
Speaker 1 (48:42):
Game of the third, bry a spectacular play by lou
Brynt Rob Bob Taylor, at least a double and perhaps
a triple. Here's the pitch on the way. Altman foul
tips it back. He was really trying to pull that
ball into the wind. Altum with nine homers and forty
(49:03):
seven runs by the then they hitting two twenty nine.
Charge has been hobbled with injuries. Here's a pitch he
was gonna bun rolling outside, two balls in a strike,
left hand hitter digging in charge of the pitch by Simmons.
(49:26):
A bouncing ball followed on the first base line. Anything
happening up there while we had a second So now
bunning and on the top of their banning. Later coming
up with the Phillies in the third, they have a
(49:46):
packed house there too. Charge off of the batter, two balls,
two strikes. We're in the third, Kurt Simmons, it's ready
end of the wind up. Here's the pitch on the way,
(50:07):
A fastball a little bit lower inside, three balls and
two strikes in the left hand to go to the
George or tompound for the third Inna, now the wine
the pitch, I tamp fowl again and after a fastball,
(50:27):
three balls, two strikes Tom for the third inning. Hope
you're enjoying a cold bottle of bush Bavarian beer right
about now, three balls, two strikes.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
The wine.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
Here's the pitch on the way, follow the dock trying
to go to left field with it, and the count
is free into light interper It's so great. I mean
time we open our of booth door. The transistors which
are around the ballpark are giving us quite a feedback.
I don't know how he can cure it, because they
want to hit the ball game two three, two pitch
(51:09):
now swell on and pop foul back and the count
three balls, two strides. That's easy, was just keep the
door closed, full count of three and two left handed
batter up there, Kurt Simmons a set. Here's the pitcher
(51:30):
on the way curve outside. He walked to him so
often leads off with a walk that enables the Mets
to use their pitcher to sacrifice in the law. Galen
Cisco coming out. Cisco's had six out of fifty.
Speaker 2 (51:50):
Four as a hitter.
Speaker 1 (51:52):
He's at one double, he's driven in four runs. Right
hand batter digging in. Now the sign and from the
bout the pitch is on the way. He McCarver drops
the ball. The pitch is high. One ball, no strike.
(52:14):
George Otman, a pretty good runner at first base, White
was charging in. Maxville is coming over the cover. One ball,
no strikes. Now the signal given ready from the boat.
The pitch on the way, he's gonna bun strike. Call
(52:34):
a fastball over the outside corner and the high one ball,
one stride. Kenny Boyer playing a shadow third base, right
sunshine there. Now the pitch on the way. He bounces
and it's a good one. Simmons has only one play
(52:55):
and that's the first base where Maxville covers. It's a sacrifice.
Simmons fumbled the ball, but the old probe that he is,
he didn't time make He knew the pitcher was running
down the line, that he had plenty of time, and
he made sure that he picked it up on the
second grab and throw them out. So they have the
time run and scoring position with only one out, and
(53:18):
they have Bobby Klaus and Roy McMillan coming up. With
a chance to drive in the run.
Speaker 2 (53:28):
Win the third.
Speaker 1 (53:30):
Right hand hitter digging in. There's Simmons getting set from
about the pitch. It's a curve at the knees. A
beauteous strike call. One strike in the balls, White at first,
(53:57):
White at the bag, Maxville over near second. They played
Klaus to pull now Simmons backs off the rubber, one
striking the balls. Here's the pitch, low fastball. Simmons fifteen
(54:18):
years ago was on the Philadelphia Philly whiz Kid team
that won the Pennant. He helped them win the Penny
with seventeen victories, but he didn't get to play in
the World Series because he was in the service when
the series was being played. Here's a strike call the Klauds.
Two strikes in them all. Simmons pitching the most important
(54:40):
game of the year. Two strikes and the ball right
handedvider digging in. We're in the third. The wind blows
towards right field and strongly. Simmons pitching the bell on
the way. Fastball is outside. That evens it up. Two balls,
(55:01):
two strikes. Bobbie Klaus the hit it. He homered yesterday's
fourth of the year. I had a brother named Billy
who was in the Major leagues, the Red Sox. Philly's
another club. Two balls, two strikes. Here's the pitch on
the leg, A bouncing ball. A boy here, he should
throw them out. There's a long throw the first he saved.
(55:25):
He rolls that. Bill White came off the bag.
Speaker 2 (55:31):
The throw was all high.
Speaker 1 (55:32):
White thought he had his tour in the bag. Altman
held second. See how they're gonna call it? It didn't
feel hit for klous. Now I'll bring up Roy McMillan,
who can handle that bat. White thought that he had come,
that his toll had stayed on the bag. And he
argues about it. I didn't fail hit. What's runners at
(55:54):
first and second with one other? The slow compert of
Kenny Boyd. Royan McMillan up there, he can handle that bad.
He can hit on the opposite field. Okay, Roy, quickly.
Anything happened in.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
The top of the third inning. Here the fields of
men in scoring position that second and third. Johnny Kellison
will be the better. There's one out and the Red
bullpen is busy with Joe Knucksdall and left Hendra JOI has.
Speaker 1 (56:25):
A hot smash. Hit the boy. It looks like a
double play to Maxville one the first four Hick Mullan
hits to a double player from Boyer to Maxville to
Bill White. That ball was hitting like a pullet on
one half right at Kenny Boyer, who executed the double
play with the pivot of Maxville White ending into first phase.
(56:47):
So it is one hit, no runs, no hairs, and
one left.
Speaker 2 (56:51):
We go into the.
Speaker 1 (56:52):
Bottom half of the third inning, Cardinals one. That's nothing.
Why are we going to the top the bottom half
of the third inning? Kurt Flood, who lined out the
center his first time at battle to the hitter, Cardinals
(57:14):
leading one to nothing. How the signal given Gale and
Cisco is ready. Here's the wind up and a fifth.
It's a strike, a good fast ball over the outside corner.
(57:34):
One strike and no ball capacity crowd on that looks capacity,
one strike.
Speaker 2 (57:43):
No ball.
Speaker 1 (57:44):
Kurd Flood leading off against Galen Cisco. The pitch is
on the way. It's a high curveball, one ball, one strike,
Kurd Flood the hitter go get set now ready into
(58:08):
the wind up. Here's the pitch way outside quickly to
Cincinnati Wroly. Anything happened there is the Bills are taking
the lead.
Speaker 2 (58:19):
As rough putting the riple bingles thowing two men. What's
the scale right, tune to nothing now if it's nothing
up their one hour.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
Of bills bill betting tune and nothing in favor of
the poies. And there's still gotting. In the third, aaron
I is flood. Two balls, one strike. Oh what excitement here?
Now the wind up by Cisco. Here's the pitch on
the way and it's low and inside ball three, three
(58:47):
balls and a strike. Nuxil is now relieving Staurus in
the third inning at Cincinnati. Three balls, one strike. Here's
the pitch, ball fouring walk them. So we have a
(59:12):
runner at first base with nobody out, and here's little Bron.
Bron singled in the first in it and with some
dazzling base running, wound up at second when Hickman just
momentarily juggled the ball the third basement. Smiff comes in
shallow expecting a bun left handed, got a waits. There's
(59:40):
the stretch to hesitation and the pitch and a pitch out.
Nothing happened, one ball, no strikes, little Bron the battery. Well,
everybody in this ballpark must have a transistor radio one bar,
no strike. Now ready, Brock a lead. Here's the stripper,
(01:00:04):
Flood a leader. Rather, here's a pitch to Brock, and
he filed tips one ball and one strike. The third baseman,
Charlie Smith, plays in on the edge of the grass.
Rock gave no indication of bunning. Flood is the runner
(01:00:25):
at first with nobody out, one ball, one strike, now
the signal given. Ready, now the stretch, the hesitation Flood,
the long lead. The pitch to Brock. Here it is
(01:00:46):
strike two called over the inside corner. Two strikes and
a ball, and Brock didn't like that one Eddie Vargo
dust off the plate. Now I'll set to go. The
third baseman drops back another step, this time left hand hitter.
(01:01:11):
The wind blowing towards right. Rock has power in that direction.
Here's the stretch and a pitch way outside that evens
it up. Two balls too, struck a runner at first.
We're in the third lou Brock waitning. The breeze blows
(01:01:36):
strongly towards right. Galen Cisco takes his time into the
stretch from the belt and the pitch outside ball three,
and it's a full kind of three and two and
Fluddell be going up, nobody out lou Brock the hitter.
(01:02:00):
It's two strikes. Cardinals leading one to nothing in the
bottom of the third. Philly's leading two to nothing in
the top of the third over Cincinnati. Three balls, two strikes,
left hand batter waiting signal gibbon ah. They stretched by
(01:02:23):
Galen Cisco from the belt. The pitches on the way
here it is long and foul, tipped as the runner
was breaking quickly. Ry what's happened?
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
Runners that first and third? One out, big power is
the batter with a two two count pill These lead
to nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:02:41):
Three balls, two strikes the ball game in the third,
one to nothing in favor of the Cardinal. Not a
signal given. Galen Cisco on the here be going with
a pitch the free two here it is there. He goes,
(01:03:04):
I hotch out to the second base with don't play
a second, fumbles the ball. Everybody is safe. Bobby calls
fumble the ball for an hour and having the runner
going on three and two, he was trying to rush.
You think he could still get the man at second
and he dropped the ball. And when you drop the
(01:03:25):
ball with rock running forget about it. So everybody is
safe runners at first and second.
Speaker 2 (01:03:30):
Nobody gout.
Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
Here's Bill White. White lined out to short his first
time up left hand hit a lady. Bill Wakefield has
started to warm up in the bullpen. Flaments. Listen to
this crowd, all right, there's frenzied excitement here. Here's a
(01:03:52):
stretch and the pitch to light. It's inside a slider.
Ball on Bill could get hold of on the way
that wind is Bloyd. One ball, no strikes. They want
to see the baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
While they look at it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:05):
Back to Cincinnati and Rome. There are two out now
with runners. The person who's suck and Tony Taylor just
rip the zidle up the middle. They know they read nothing.
Good reporting, right, good reporting. As long as you can
runs for the fullies, you're the greatest. Three to nothing
(01:04:27):
in favor the pullies, and they're still batting in the
third at Cincinnati. One ball, no strikes on Bill White,
I know gayl and Cisco is ready from the belt.
The pitch it's outside wall two, and Wakefield is down
(01:04:50):
to the boat. Fail Harry. Bill White and checking the
records has had great success against Cisco. Hit a home
run off him earlier in the season and gonna base
hit a two base hit in an early game two
for five against him. Going to this one. It is
first time up, a line drive to the short stuff
all right, two balls, no strikes, runners at first and second,
(01:05:11):
the stretch, the pitch. I'm bouncing by to the first basement.
Speaker 2 (01:05:15):
Crane Pool. He's gonna throw a second in time.
Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
Runners are at first and third. Nice play by Ed Cranepoole.
So white forces brought crane Pool the McMillan. Here's Bowyer
now with runners at first and third, only one out. Ooh,
we gotta win this ball game. Lawyer walked his first
time up. They're McMillan. The short stopped talking to Galen Cisco.
(01:05:45):
They're gonna play back for the double play. Blawyer might
try to poke that ball to the opposite field against
that defense with Clouds practically standing on second base, right
handed Vowitz, Kenny Boy, you witting Yaleen Cisco gets set
(01:06:15):
the infield back hoping for a double play. Oh, I'd
like to see him slice one in the right field.
There's the stretch and the pitch on the way.
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
Double play for all. The cross over to McMillan for
what over.
Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
The first day for two from close to McMillan to
Crane Puol. So it is no runs, no hits, one
air one left at the end of three. Here the
Cardinals one, but me, that's nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
Why are we going to the top of the fourth.
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
Now here comes a three up for Philadelphia. Everybody sees it.
Now here's the pitch to Christopher and the slow curved
strike as Gus one striking the ball. Joe Christopher beat
out upon his first time up. Christopher hitting three on one,
sixteen homers and seventy six runs. By the day, Simmons
(01:07:11):
get set the wind up. Now the pitch on the way.
There's a high pop fly sharp right field, Shannon waiting
for the ball. He's got in one eye. Christopher fly
to Shannon and right one away. And here's Jimmy Hicker,
a power hitter eleven homers and fifty seven RBIs batting
(01:07:31):
two fifty nine. He flied out to write his first
time up. A balloon comes blowing onto the field. Well,
that's that's how high will all be if the Reds
lose and the Cardinals win today. Here's a pitch on
(01:07:59):
the way and down Hickman. It's a little bit inside
one ball in those strikes. The football Cardinals lead fourteen
to ten and a half. Now the pitch, slow curve
of a beauty that evens enough, but a ball and
a strike, one out, nobody on base one do nothing
(01:08:22):
in favor of the Cardinal. Would feel a lot better
if we can make a few more runs. One ball,
one strike the pitch on the way. It's a high fastball,
ball too, two balls in the strike. Looking ahead to
the Cardinal fourth, it'll be great leading off. We had
a great chance in the third, but White and Bowyer
(01:08:43):
were retired within field. Ground ball, two balls, one strike
the pitch. There's a fly ball left field, Brock coming over.
He's there now he makes the cat Hickman fly to
Brock and left, and here's Charlie Smith popped up his
(01:09:03):
first time up right handed battle.
Speaker 2 (01:09:06):
When the top of the.
Speaker 1 (01:09:06):
Fourth US paused quickly for a cold bottle of bush Bavarian.
Speaker 2 (01:09:10):
There.
Speaker 1 (01:09:10):
This is the Cardinals baseball network, cam Wicks and km
or in Saint Louis only DX gasoline contains the element born.
Speaker 2 (01:09:19):
Fill up with tax before the.
Speaker 4 (01:09:25):
Line.
Speaker 1 (01:09:27):
This is Harry carry with Jerry Gross and Saint Louis
and now to Cincinnati and ray May Kim Bunning gets
up the bill down an order in the verge. At
the end of three, it's Philly three where it's nothing.
All right, here's a straight call now to Charlie Smith.
So it's three to nothing at the end of three,
Philadelphia over Cincinnati. Charlie Smith. Here's the batter, one ball,
(01:09:52):
one stride the line. Now the pitch by Simmons, and
here it is let up, pitch outside, two balls in
the strike top for the fourth Cardinals leading one to nothing.
Are these nuts give us a battle? Now the wine
the pitch here it is. He's swung and miss strike two,
(01:10:17):
and the count is evened up. Two balls, two strikes.
Speaker 2 (01:10:23):
Billy McCool is relieved for the.
Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
Reds Now in the fourth. So the Phillies lead three
to nothing with McCool relieving.
Speaker 2 (01:10:32):
Next all probably went out for.
Speaker 1 (01:10:33):
A pinch a two balls, two strikes to pitch on
the way. There's a little pop file out of play
into the stand and the count evened up. Two balls,
two strikes, two men out all game. In the fourth,
Charlie Smith, the battle Kurt Simmons in another pitching dough
(01:10:57):
with Galen Cisco, who bad's two strikes the wind up
the pitch, and here it is.
Speaker 2 (01:11:04):
There's a drive way back.
Speaker 1 (01:11:05):
It might be out of here if but stays fair,
it could be.
Speaker 2 (01:11:09):
It's a home on.
Speaker 1 (01:11:15):
Just down the right feel line. And this ballgame is tied.
Charlie Smith has just hit his twentieth home out of
the year. The only hope was it might go foul,
but it's stayed fair right down the line, and the
ball games tied one and one. Charlie Smith's twentieth home run, Bob,
(01:11:37):
That takes the steam out of the crowd. Here is
Bob Taylor, who has robbed of an extra base hit
on a remarkable play by Lou Brock. The pit slow
curve lined in the left of base hip.
Speaker 2 (01:11:50):
Taylor is on.
Speaker 1 (01:11:51):
There, and I'll bring up eight Ed Crane pull, a
power left handed hitter. Boy that chance. We missed them
at third and he runners at first and second nobody
out with White and Voyer. Lawyer hit his ball sharply,
(01:12:12):
but he hit it right up the middle, which is
exactly where they were playing him. They figure he'll be
trying to pull every time, and so they give him
all the right field and with the wind blowing towards right, today.
That's the power field. Here's the pitch in his low
one ball will strike. Bob Gibson is limbering up in
the bullplane for the garden.
Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
I tied the ball again.
Speaker 1 (01:12:37):
Now to stretch the hesitation the pitch on the leg.
There's a pop fly. Everybody chasing it. Who's going to
get it? Flood is there, He's got it to retire
to side, crying pull again, fly to flood. One run,
two hits nowers one left, were going to the bottom
of the fourth, all tied up the nets. One the
Cardinals won. You hear about teas you bet on particular
(01:13:03):
and my Pellmells prove it. Particular people.
Speaker 6 (01:13:07):
Take particular patient.
Speaker 1 (01:13:11):
In the good taste of papal. Yes, Pellmell's natural mildness
means just one thing, smooth, pleasing flavor, the flavors.
Speaker 6 (01:13:29):
Splending over, under, around and fruit to bring that particular
good taste to.
Speaker 1 (01:13:36):
Use of get particular players. You're like particular people do
in the good gay stop paldelt me particular smoke a
long cigarette that's long on flavored.
Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
By pell Mell.
Speaker 1 (01:13:53):
Famous cigarettes outstanding and they are mined from the Ricon
Tobacco Company bought around for the fourth inning.
Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
We have a moment.
Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
Let's go to Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (01:14:11):
Right on top of the fourth there's nobody on and
one out with Jim bunning the better. How's bunning luck?
Very good, Harry.
Speaker 1 (01:14:25):
Okay, here's the Growth to lead off of the Cardinals
at the bottom of the fourth. All tied up one
and one. Oh, we gotta get some runs. Amazing how
this ball club holds us nine of the games played
with them, that's have been decided by one run in
(01:14:49):
two out of the last three games we played with him,
and they won all three. By the way, the pinch,
dear girt is a straight call. They beat us two
to one, one to nothing. Of course, walloped us yesterday
fifteen to five. The last time we beat the Mets
was by the score of two to one. So they're pitching, yes,
(01:15:12):
buffos of buffaloes us. Here's Growth, one strike, no ball,
Cisco's pitches on the way, there's a drive and the
right feeline fall by about a foot and a half,
so Growth is in the whole. Two strikes and nothing.
Bottom half of the fourth inning, all tied up one
(01:15:35):
and one and Cincinnati boting our Philadelphia botting in the
top of the fourth leads Cincinnati three tonothering growth for batter.
Two strikes and nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:15:53):
We're in the fourth.
Speaker 1 (01:16:00):
Now the pitch on the way and it's a curveball high.
The fields didn't score in the fourth. The Reds are
now batting, trailing three to nothing. Two strikes in the
ball the present pays. The Cincinnati game is ahead of ours,
just not equal. We're in the bottom of the fourth.
There in the bottom of the fourth. Two strikes and
(01:16:21):
the ball the pitch to grow into the dirt low.
That evens it up. Two balls, two strikes. Cardinals, who
had three hits the Mets have had four is. The
Mets had a home run from Charlie Smith down the
right feet line to the pavilion roof. There's twentieth home
run of the air. He went to the opposite field
(01:16:44):
and took advantage of the wind. The little fellows had
a great year. Anytime he had twenty home runs in
this league. You've done something. Here's the pitch to grow.
There's a fly ball deep right cider. Fields could have
got away on the wall. Baby extra basis throats around first,
heading for second. Here's a throw. He's gonna make it easily.
A double. Great opens the fourth with the double the.
Speaker 2 (01:17:08):
Right center and how to be McCarver who doubled the left.
Speaker 1 (01:17:15):
In the second, followed by Shannon. That's the lead run
at second base.
Speaker 2 (01:17:21):
Nobody out.
Speaker 1 (01:17:42):
Macarver takes a look at Berne Benson coaching third and
the scrap. The pitch is on the left, A bouncing
boy back to the mound. He holds the runner at second,
throws the first in Macarver's eye. Oh that hurt. He
didn't pull the ball at all, just pushed his bat
(01:18:05):
at it in the right back to the pitcher. One situation,
you've got to try to pull, because.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
The ground ball to the first bay side would put.
Speaker 1 (01:18:14):
Grodan third with one out. As it is now, takes
a base hic to score. Here's Shannon, who drove in
our first run with a single to left Grildon's scoring
position with one out. Either stretch the hesitation, the pitches
on the way. It's a fastball, low ball, one down.
(01:18:38):
Maxville will be next.
Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
One and one. We're in the bottom of the fourth.
Speaker 1 (01:18:42):
The Mets have won the first two games. Trying to
make of the clean sweep. The Phillies are leading the
Reds three to nothing in the bottom of the fourth
at Cincinnati. One ball, no strikes, the pitches on the way.
He had a good cut on that one, and he
filed it off. One ball, strike anything happening right quickly,
(01:19:04):
One on and one out here for the Reds in
the bottom of the floor, hitting and drank, robbing the player.
All right, one ball, one strike here Shannon, the butt
score tied one one. Galen Cisco rubs up the baseball.
(01:19:31):
Now we're ready. They don't feel punches. Shannon towards center.
Cisco gets set rode the long lead at second base,
(01:19:56):
grow the second base and the one one pitches on
the way, and here it is. He had a cut
and he fouled it back. Boy, he had a good
swing of the curb all that time. He returned the
ball to the pitcher and almost hit him in the face.
He wasn't looking. Two strikes and the ball in Cincinnati.
(01:20:18):
Is Robinson still upright?
Speaker 2 (01:20:20):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (01:20:21):
He is there.
Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
He with a one one gown, a runner.
Speaker 1 (01:20:24):
At first, one out, two strikes, and the ball here
with one out and a runner at second, and nice
Shannon the bell down. Maxville had been next.
Speaker 2 (01:20:35):
One one time.
Speaker 1 (01:20:38):
Charlie Smith, who hit a home run yesterday, had another
one today.
Speaker 2 (01:20:42):
Now the stretch.
Speaker 1 (01:20:45):
Front the belt and the pitch to Shannon on the
way a pop fly and the short center feels going
to be caught. Hickman is there. He's got it to
a way. Shannon didn't have much of a swing of
that one. So there's two out here in the fourth
and here's dal Maxville. He popped up his first time
(01:21:06):
right handed hitter up there, playing in place of the
injured Hoavier Maxville bouting two twenty two. Right handed hitter
(01:21:26):
Galen Cisco takes his time, rubs up the baseball now ready.
Speaker 2 (01:21:38):
From the belt.
Speaker 1 (01:21:40):
There's the pitch to Maxville. It's a high inside curve ball,
ball one one born on strikes Maxville not a power hitter,
no homers and two RBIs bouting two twenty two, chokes
up on the bat about an inch from the end.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
One ball.
Speaker 1 (01:22:03):
Those strikes, the stretch and the pitch to Maxville up.
He backs off the rubber. Gal and Cisco very deliberate.
After this pitch will flash back to Cincinnati. There's the
stretch and the pitch to Maxville. Here it is ye
(01:22:24):
drive base head.
Speaker 2 (01:22:25):
Here's a man gonna turn to score.
Speaker 1 (01:22:27):
Here's Jim hicking up with a ball and his scars.
The Cardinal's hey turn a love. Maxville seen of the
center scoring.
Speaker 2 (01:22:34):
Group, and the Cardinals lead two to one.
Speaker 1 (01:22:40):
Now, let's see if anything has happened in Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (01:22:44):
Out here.
Speaker 1 (01:22:44):
Now has Frank Robinson drunk out, but the ball got
away from the catcher and Tinton is on second base.
Now the batter is Darren Johnson, two out.
Speaker 2 (01:22:53):
Philly's three reads nothing in the bottom of the board.
Speaker 1 (01:22:57):
All right, here's Kurt Simmons now down. Xville drives in
his third run of the year, and he ripped that
ball hard up the middle, and Simmons steps up there.
Two to one in favor of the Cardinal. Bill Wakefield
arms up again for the Mets. Cisco getting ready. Now
(01:23:18):
the stretch by ciscone the pitch to Simmons, and here
it is outside ball one one ball in those strikes,
Cisco broad shouldered right handrew was one sixth lost eighteen, two.
Speaker 2 (01:23:38):
To one, the Cardinals lead. We're in the bottom of
the fort.
Speaker 1 (01:23:43):
Rain Pool doesn't hold the run around. He plays back
off the bag at first the stretch. The pitch out
of Simmons. Here it is outside ball two.
Speaker 2 (01:23:52):
Two balls are not there.
Speaker 1 (01:23:57):
Kurt Flood would be next. Reed Bird's trying to build
up a cushion, which is hard to do against his
ball club. Two balls, no strikes. The Phillies beat the
Mets fifteen out of eighteen this year, and we wonder
how in the world they did it. Two balls, no strikes.
(01:24:19):
Now to stretch from the belt, the pitch to Simmons.
It's ball three long, three walls and no strikes. Two
out of runner at first. Maxville bolted in the tie
breaking runner. The football Cardinals are leading in Washington twenty
(01:24:41):
one to ten. Three balls, no strikes, runner at first base.
Flood would be next. Galen Cisco gets set. Now from
the belt to pitch on the way here, it is
ball four. He walk here. So we have runners at
(01:25:04):
first and second.
Speaker 2 (01:25:05):
With two out and Kurt Flood coming up.
Speaker 1 (01:25:09):
Let's switch down to Cincinnati and see if the Reds
are still batting in their fort The situation was dame here,
a man on second base, two out and a one
to two count on Darren Jonson. All right, right, here's
Kurt Flood, Simmons at first, Knoxville at second ball game
of the fourth The Reds did not score in the fourth.
(01:25:38):
Here's a stretch down to pitch the Flood. It's inside ball,
one one ball, no strikes. Kurt Flood, who lined.
Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
Out his first time, walked the second time. Rock would
be next.
Speaker 1 (01:25:55):
Right handed batter, waiting two to one in favor of
the Cardinal. Here's the stretch and the pitch on the
way he's swinging in hiss. He was going for the
pump that time. What's that right?
Speaker 4 (01:26:22):
Yeah, still that's not good.
Speaker 1 (01:26:34):
Here's the stretch, one ball, one strike, A bouncing balls
out in the inning. McMillan's got it. Flips the second
Flood four Simmons from McMillan to clumps, one run, two hits,
no airs, two left at the end of four of
the Cardinals two the Mets one time. For the fifth.
(01:26:55):
The Cardinals lead two to one. Georgia, I'm gonna lead
it off. Anything going on in Cincinnati, RAI.
Speaker 2 (01:27:08):
Yes, there ain't. In the top of the fifth inning,
Ritchie Allen has just homered against the Zimmerville wall. They
not lead for.
Speaker 1 (01:27:17):
Nobody out, nobody on all right, wonderful. Ritchie Allen is
just homered and the redsid in the Phillies lead forward
to nothing. In Cincinnati, here's George Ortman up there. One
strike in the ball on the line. Here's the pitch
on the way, and he started a swing and he
held up. One ball, one strike. They're in the fifth
(01:27:40):
at Cincinnati with a Phillies leading forward to nothing, left
handed battle. Altman waits. He walked his first time at bat.
Here's the wind up. Now the pitch by Simmons, and
it gets.
Speaker 2 (01:27:53):
Away from the carver.
Speaker 1 (01:27:55):
Two balls and a strike a little bit inside in
behalf of bush Bavarian. There we sincerely hope that you've
enjoyed it. Another season of Cardinal Baseball broadcasts. Two balls,
one strike. The pitches on the way fouled out a
(01:28:16):
play in the counts there, two balls, two strike.
Speaker 2 (01:28:20):
Altan the battle.
Speaker 1 (01:28:23):
We're in the fifth and they're in the fifth. Up there,
we lead two to one. The Reds trail fourth to nothing.
Two balls, two strikes. Now the wind of an. Here's
the pitch on the way, lane drive base it for all.
(01:28:43):
Altman singles to center. And so once again the time
when is on base with nobody out, enabling their pitcher
Galen Siskel to come up and sacrifice Altman single. The
center football scorer Harriet. The end of three quarters, the
(01:29:08):
football Cardinals lead twenty one to ten over the redskin. Okay,
don't kiss Cisco and the stretch. The pitch on the
way he buns, and it's a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:29:20):
Boy. They can lay that ball down.
Speaker 1 (01:29:22):
There's a throat the first to Maxville. They just don't
fail on that sacrifice, do they? And the playgoes from
Bowyer to Maxville as Cisco's sacrifice is a Here is
Bobby Klaus right hand at battery the ball game. In
(01:29:42):
the fifth, the Red Birds and a real struggle with
the Mets, but leading two to one. That's how the
time run at second base. One out, the stretch. Now
the pitch on the way he swung and he missed.
The fastball strike Wie one strike and the ball one out,
(01:30:14):
growth edging a little bit towards altman has a long leave.
Simmons pitch strike two, hit the corner, a fast ball
that nipped the outside corner. So it's two strikes and
no ball, one out and a man in scoring position.
Here in the fifth, the delivery on the way, there's
(01:30:42):
a high pop fly that should be caught by somebody.
Maxville is there he's under the ball. Oh, let's a drop,
and there's a runner around third hauling out Charles Winds
up at second day Shannon could have caught the ball,
but Maxville had called for it and the wind grabbed it.
(01:31:03):
I'm might take those kinds kay an easy to pop fly.
Now they have the leading run at second, the time
run at third.
Speaker 2 (01:31:14):
Maxfield had called for the ball.
Speaker 1 (01:31:16):
So Shannon let him have it, and he didn't play
the wind at all. And it goes for a double.
And now McMillan, a tough man up there with runners
at second and third in the infield, has to come in.
(01:31:42):
McMillan hit the ball sharply in the third, but into
a double plug right hand got away. Simmons in a jam.
Speaker 2 (01:31:52):
Ready the wind up.
Speaker 1 (01:31:53):
Here's a pitch on the leg, it's outside. Joe Christopher
would be next. The Cardinals in trouble. Bob Gibson down
on the bullpen. We lead two to one, but a
pop fly was just permitted to drop as down Knaxville
miscalculated the wind. One ball, no strike to pitch on
(01:32:14):
the way and it's outside ball two two balls are nothing.
Shannon and right flood and center rock and left What
really heard about that one was that Shannon could have
caught the ball, but Nxville kept yelling for it, so
Shannon had to back away from him, fearing a collision.
Speaker 2 (01:32:36):
Whereby the ball might drop, and so.
Speaker 1 (01:32:40):
By retreating he wasn't able to lunch for the ball
at Maxville completely misjudging it, allowed to drop two balls,
no strike.
Speaker 2 (01:32:54):
In feel in.
Speaker 1 (01:32:56):
Ken Simmons pitch out of this, he's behind the hit
or two balls and nothing. Now he's ready into the
wind that the girls, and here's the pitch on.
Speaker 2 (01:33:12):
The way lane.
Speaker 1 (01:33:14):
Drive is gonna score both and the Mets have taken
the lead into the Carnom. Mcmillon's on his way.
Speaker 2 (01:33:19):
To second days.
Speaker 1 (01:33:22):
I double the left and the Cardinals trail three to two,
A Millon a tough hitter in the clutch, and now
are both of the two of the teams right now.
(01:33:43):
If everything would end the way it is now, that'd
be a triple tie starting tomorrow in Philadelphia with the
Reds playing the Phillies. Sorry, that high pomp lie that
really hurt changed the whole ending around. And now Joe
(01:34:08):
Christopher comes up, Bob Gibson is down in the bullpen
and Gibson in relief.
Speaker 2 (01:34:17):
You don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:34:19):
Here comes the manager, Johnny keen ou and Gibson's going
to be brought in here. Simmons hasn't challed b That's
a shame of that pop fly. If Maxville had just
(01:34:44):
stayed away from it completely, why it would have been
all right. But it started out like a routine pop
fly behind first, and he kept yelling for it and
running out for it, so Shannon stopped coming in. Yeah,
and then he didn't come within five feet of it.
(01:35:06):
Simmons are going to stay in there and just a
little chat one out.
Speaker 2 (01:35:17):
Three to two in favor of the Mets.
Speaker 1 (01:35:24):
Oh, we're ever going to beat these fellas, all right now,
he just said, Johnny just wanted to give Gibson a
little more time to get ready. Now he's coming out,
which means that, uh said, Simons will have to go
out because he's come out twice in one inning. All right,
(01:35:44):
Let's go now to Rime and Cincinnati and see what
the picture is there.
Speaker 2 (01:35:49):
We're going into the bottom of.
Speaker 1 (01:35:50):
The goodpinning now if the Billy is out in the
front board to nothing and in accompan the inning, as
you know, originality is that long home run. It's in
the field. So that's the situation. The Red's coming about
it and the Reds are trailing for to nothing is
you're heard and we're losing three to two here, and
(01:36:15):
Bob Gibson comes in in relief. Let's say, for Gibson,
this is only the fourth the fifth time that he's relieved.
(01:36:35):
He comes into the ballgame trailing three to two. Kurt
Simmons has been knocked out here two doubles in a single,
but one double with just a high pop fly behind
first phase that young dal Knoxville. Miss John let the
(01:37:00):
wind carry it away from him and it drop behind
him as he was calling he had it. So Gibson
now comes in. He lost one to nothing Friday night.
(01:37:24):
Makes us particularly tough for you. For us is that
the Reds are losing, which is the combination you need.
A Cardinal victory and a Red defeat would clinch dependant
for the Cardinals. A Mess victory and a Philadelphia victory
(01:37:45):
would throw the three teams into a tie, which would
make all time baseball history a three way tie, necessitating
a round robin playoff. By Joe Christopher will be the
batter one out a man in scoring position. The Mets
lead three to two. They stretch to hesitation and the
(01:38:18):
pitch to Christopher straight call the good fastball, one strike
in the bags. Christopher beat out a bun on the first.
He's hitting three oh one, light out the right. In
the fourth, Jim Hickman, another right handed battle the next.
Here's a stretch and from the belt, the pitcher on.
Speaker 2 (01:38:37):
The way, a high fly ball the right.
Speaker 1 (01:38:40):
Shannons there waiting. Boy, he's got it. Two gone. Here's Hickman,
a right handed bout it. Simmons cannot be the winner
of this game. He could be the loser. If the
Cardinals never catch up. He would be the winner of
the loser. If the Cardinals don't catch Joe, we've got
(01:39:01):
a long way to go. Now, Hickman comes out nothing
out of two in this ball game. He had nothing
out of four against Gibson Friday night. Man's in scoring position.
One out. Now, the stretch, the hesitation and the pitch
on the way. It's a fastball, hind inside ball, one
(01:39:24):
one ball, no strikes. In the fifth, the delivery by
Gibson on.
Speaker 2 (01:39:39):
The way, I tap right in front of the plate.
Speaker 1 (01:39:43):
The carver's got it. Throws the first in time and
saw the inning is ober and did the job. There's
two runs score whenever run, three hits, no errors, and
one left.
Speaker 2 (01:39:55):
And now we go on to the bottom of the fifth.
Speaker 1 (01:39:59):
The three the cardinals two. We like to talk to
you ladies now about some very good reasons for using
cotton made instant spray starts on ironing day. First of all,
cotton made is a work saver. A few light sprays
over hard to iron areas is all you need to
make ironing smoother, close, stay need longer. Use cotton made
(01:40:20):
on cuffs and collars especially, it'll keep them looking fresh
all day. Secondly, cotton made is a money saver. You
see it comes in a safe, plastic refillable bottle. You
save a great deal over the cost of aerosol sprays.
You don't throw the spray bottle away, you refill it
from the economy sized court. And because cotton made has
(01:40:42):
a windows spray type bunger, you get just the amount
of spray that you need. You don't have all that pressure,
you never use too much. And thirdly, get a bottle
of cotton made next shopping day. Be sure to look
for the refill when your pint Sprayer gets low cotton
made a product of Vannheuser Bush Incorporated. Before we move
(01:41:05):
now to the last half of the fifth inning, where
the red verts down three to two. Take time for
station identification. This is the Cardinals Baseball network. Gilam works
out and KM works up. There'm Saint Louis. Only DX
gasoline contains the element born full up with take superfore
God on the line. This is Harry carry with Jerry
(01:41:30):
Gross a beautifulfore stadium in Saint Louis. The Cardinal's trailing
by a run three to two. Here's Lil Brock to
lead it off. Calin Cisco has been on the ropes,
but he leaves. Here's the pitch to Brock on the
loy Hey, how to Cartomy miss strike one? Quickly? Ry?
What's going on in Cincinnati?
Speaker 2 (01:41:49):
Were at the end of five? Now Harry still pill
He's four reds rubbing and Jim Bunning looks sharp. Indeed,
he's got these reds.
Speaker 1 (01:41:55):
Popping up all over the place. Let's hope he continues.
One strike and the balls.
Speaker 2 (01:42:03):
Rock. Father.
Speaker 1 (01:42:04):
Here's the pitch on the way outside, and that evens
it up. One ball, one strike, come on a little
that's pump one out on the ground of it. One ball,
one strike. Here's the pitch on the way. He had
(01:42:25):
a cutting boy, that's what he had in mind, but he.
Speaker 2 (01:42:28):
Fouled it up.
Speaker 1 (01:42:29):
Two strikes in the ball. It's at the end of five.
Now four to nothing, Philadelphia, Cincinnati. I haven't posted that
other one yet. Two strikes in the wall. Lou Brock
(01:42:50):
waits the ball game. In the fifth, Cisco's pitches on
the way, way outside, and the count evens at two balls,
two strikes. What is it?
Speaker 2 (01:43:06):
Riot didn't get you?
Speaker 1 (01:43:10):
Joey J. Joey J. The new pitcher for the Reds.
In the sixth, four to nothing, Philadelphia, two balls, two strikes.
There's a pitch to Brock, low ball three, barely missed
the strikes off. Now he lifted his nose. Cisco had
tumble with his current ball in the fourth inning, but
here in the fifth he's had tumble getting the fastball over,
(01:43:31):
which is tailing away from the left handed hitters. Cardinal's
one run behind Gale and Cisco getting ready. Here's the
wind up in the pitch. He double pumps and then stops,
and now he starts all over again, and now he
delivers three and two ball before we walk up. Maybe
(01:43:53):
this is the evening we can break it Alpha. Here's
Bill White, who lined out the shard and bounce into
a force flood. Cardinals have been out him seven to five,
outscored three to two. Activity down in the metal full path,
while as Casey Stengle is playing and right down to
the hill, which is the way the game is supposed
to be played. Ergoes hot Taylor out to talk to
(01:44:18):
the pitcher. Bill White will be the batter. None of
our left handed banners have taken advantage of this wind yet.
Bob Bill Hunter is the left handed down there, and
Bill Wakefield the right hand. Come on, Bill Pump went
(01:44:43):
out on the roof. Runner at first, Nobody out. Lawyer
will be next, Gal and Cisco getting set. There's the stretch,
the throw the first hand. Brock is back, just lob
the ball. Bob Taylor to catcher Bill White, the battery
(01:45:10):
Bronko lead. There's the fetch, pitch out. He's not going
one ball and our strikes runner at first, Nobody out.
Fifth inning, I have a signal given the stretch Bronko lead.
(01:45:35):
There's the fetch, he's not going ball two, two balls,
and our strikes. Let's get to Cincinnati and ramey as
Casey Stengele comes out of the dug out air right
in the dove of the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
The Bills have the daughter something. They have runners the
first and second. Nobody out, vid your Jim Bunning out.
They're looking for the bunt of court.
Speaker 1 (01:46:04):
So all the Phillies are threatening to get more up
there with runners at first and second and nobody out.
Casey Stengel is coming out to talk to Galeen Cisco.
Our left hander's down in the bullpen.
Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Will Hunter.
Speaker 1 (01:46:20):
Back to Cincinnati and right a hearing they goodding. The
bases are now loaded. As Bunning dropped the bunk, they
let it roll in. It's day there, bases loaded, nobody out.
The dollars will be the better. Wow, come on, lets
us have an inning. Now it looks like the Phillies
might be headed for one already leading Ford to nothing.
(01:46:40):
Now the base is loaded and nobody out. Come on Bill,
two balls, no strikes. Cisco stays in there. Now the
stretch the hesitation and here's the fifth line. Drive right
(01:47:01):
for your face half and rock stopped at second ase.
And the Cardinals have runners at first and second and
nobody out with Kenny Boyer coming out. Bowyer walked and
hit into whatever play. And let's say, now what the
Cardinals do. Well, boy your hitter Willie Bunt. There's a
(01:47:28):
left hander in a right hander down in the bullpen.
Par of the Mets. Jerry why are this year has
faced Cisco six times. He had a home run and
a triple off him earlier this year when he's out
for one here this afternoon, grounded into the double play.
Yet he did hit the ball very hard and clouds
for the double plays. Ride Boyer the batter runners at
(01:47:49):
first and second and nobody out. The Cardinals are trailing
three to two. The Foolies are leading.
Speaker 2 (01:47:57):
The reds.
Speaker 1 (01:48:00):
Now the signal given. Right handed batter digging in. This
crowd is really alive. The stretch, the hesitation, and now
the pitch. It's low, a fastball, ball one one ball
in those stripes. Hunter, the left hander, Wakefield, the right hander,
(01:48:23):
continue to pump in the bullpen. This might be Cisco's
last man if he doesn't retire him.
Speaker 2 (01:48:33):
Now. The stretch and the pitch to Bowyer a hot
shot were free of face.
Speaker 1 (01:48:40):
Has the trying run is in.
Speaker 2 (01:48:42):
Here's another man racing for third, car goes boy In
a second with a double.
Speaker 1 (01:48:47):
The Cardinals will tighten up as Boyer double past Charlie
Stiff in the left hail and now Casey Stingo coning out.
The score tied three, three runners at second and third
and nobody out, and I believe it's gonna be Wakefield,
(01:49:08):
Bill Wakefield's gonna come in that for Boyer runs batted
in number one nineteen. Let's go now to Cincinnati and
see what's happened there. And here at Rosleyville, the Phillies
now lead Dick to nothing, Dick to nothing, hundreds of
verse second, nobody out and Rickey allen upper blade.
Speaker 2 (01:49:30):
There you have it.
Speaker 1 (01:49:31):
The Phillies are now leading six to nothing and still fanning.
Oh what excitement here today.
Speaker 2 (01:49:39):
I wish you could all be.
Speaker 1 (01:49:40):
Here, Harry. As we mentioned earlier, Cisco had basketball trouble
in the inning, and when he did come in with
what appeared to be an off speed pitch to Boyer
one and Ohero Kenny, rather than being over eager, waited
for the pitch and lined it just in side the
line for the big devil something else in Cincinnati?
Speaker 2 (01:50:04):
What is it? Ryan? Harry?
Speaker 1 (01:50:05):
Rickey Allen has broken this game wide open. They all lead.
Mind the nothing he just covered into the light tale bleachers.
Speaker 2 (01:50:12):
Mind the moving.
Speaker 1 (01:50:15):
Nine to nothing in favor of the flame that court
thots could clench the panel with a victory.
Speaker 2 (01:50:21):
Here today, Holy Cow, hold on to the core bottle.
Speaker 1 (01:50:31):
Of Bush Bavarian their friends because the celebration might take
place here today. Angelove down and all the heart just
hard of one hundred cases, he tells me in a liar.
And you know we we're on Armed Forces Network the
(01:50:53):
other day. And Willie Buholzer was Gussie Bush's brother law
who lives in Lazerne, Switzerland, listening the Armed Forces Network
really pulling for the Saint Louis Cardinals from Lazerne. We
just received this wire. I hope Armed Forces with us
(01:51:15):
again today because the national the Cardinals maybe will clinch
the National League tenant.
Speaker 2 (01:51:20):
They are carrying our broadcasts.
Speaker 1 (01:51:22):
All over the world today.
Speaker 2 (01:51:26):
Hey, hey, what else is new?
Speaker 1 (01:51:33):
Listen to this cow?
Speaker 2 (01:51:47):
All right?
Speaker 1 (01:51:48):
Phil Wakefielder is the new pretcher. The game tied three three,
the infiel in the wine up by Wakefield the pitch
to growth outside slider. Oh, they said, now the Cardinals
(01:52:11):
would be leading Bill Wakefield comes out of the cardinal chain.
One ball, no strength, into the wind up the pitch
to growth. Here it is he swung trying to hit
the right field and he missed one ball, one strength.
(01:52:31):
They're listening to us down in Antigua in the British
West Indies throughout the Caribbean area. So our appreciation of
Gordon Bridge and the gang had armed forces network.
Speaker 2 (01:52:48):
Here is growth.
Speaker 1 (01:52:51):
Here's the wind up by Wakefield. Here's a petch. He
fouled it back and he's in a hole. Two strikes
in the ball. Tim mccarveroro'll be next, knows they're tied
here three three runners at second and third. Nobody uh
the met infield playing shadow Big Bill Wakefield in relief.
(01:53:11):
He's out of Kansas City. Two strikes in the ball,
now all set. This crowd is in a hysterical frenzy.
Two strikes in the ball, out of the line. Here's
(01:53:37):
the pitch on the leg, fold backing out of play
group trying to get a piece of that ball. The
infield in. Two strikes in the ball on letter in
shortstop to grow, they'll hunter a left hander and jack
fish who are right handed down to the bullpen for
(01:53:58):
the Mets. We gotta get some run. Two strengths in
the ball. Wakefield is ready. There's the wind of nine,
the pitch on the leg. He folded back again, wrote
staying alive. He's trying to hit that ball on the
(01:54:19):
first day Saturday infield. White's a third barriers and second
bracis guard the time run the Cardinals with a chance
to blow it open air, and the Phillies are leading
name to nothing at Cincinnati. Two strengths, one ball.
Speaker 2 (01:54:41):
The line the petch here it is a grand.
Speaker 1 (01:54:45):
Ball left the middle offe pitchers who to run scuards, quarters, purrownd.
That first day, the Cardinals leave for the free and
Boyer house second base, not knowing whether White would break
for the player or not give the Wakefield and assist
(01:55:06):
on the Playoffso he deflicted the ball a run better
than for growth number seventy. Here's Micarver now with a
runner at second, and only went out that Ritchie Allen
is ready put on his show. He's this last week,
(01:55:31):
certainly in this Cincinnati series.
Speaker 2 (01:55:40):
As soon as we get a moment.
Speaker 1 (01:55:41):
Glow, have our men in Cincinnati come in. There's the drags.
They're gonna walk macarver intentionally now to bring a Mike
Shannon an intentional fact. Well, now this is being done,
rye anymore up there? In the sixth oh, Harry Bill,
Henry came into put out the fire, retired the free
(01:56:02):
Mounty base, but a little bit too late, as the
Bills jumped all over Joey Jay. Here in the Nick
Luning revived and five runs in looting a home run
by Richie Allen, his second of the day, along with
a double three out of Barber Allen.
Speaker 2 (01:56:18):
So we're going into the bottom of the thing nine
to nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:56:21):
The Philly's over the red hide. Mccarver's been intentionally passed.
We have runners at first and second, and here's Mike Shannon.
There's only one out down. Maxville would be next. Oh,
the pump one out of here. Now they give a
little Persian the Cardinals leading four to three, with Gimpson
(01:56:48):
in relief of Kurt Simmons. Now the stretch from the belt,
the pets to Shannon. He takes it inside ball one,
one ball, no strike. Shannon, who drove in a runner
first of the day in the second inning, hitting two
sixty two nine homers and forty three Army eyes, one ball,
(01:57:14):
no strikes, one out, all right, right, one ball, those strikes.
There's Bill Wakefield getting ready. Now the fifth lowe fall
two two balls, no strikes. Next there would be next,
(01:57:35):
all for an in between, or now to get a
little breathing room. Cardinals one run ahead, the Phillies nine
runs ahead, two balls, no strikes. Now the stretch, the hesitation,
and the pitch on the leg stick slider hit the
(01:57:56):
outside corner at the knee, Bill Wakefield, a product of
the Van Johnson League. The Football Cardinals beat Washington twenty
three to seventeen. Two balls and a strike, right hand
batter waiting. Mike Shannon, the hitter, the petch He swings
(01:58:23):
at a curve, and he made him look bad on
that one. Here comes the five for the Phillies and
the scoreboard. Two balls, two strike, right handed Bader digging in.
(01:58:49):
There's the stretch, and now the pitch he struck him up.
Shannon goes down swinging. So oh, here's down Maxville. He
drove in a run on the ford, and he driving
another one here in the fifth. Bob Gibson would be
nexts four to three in favor of the Cardinal. Maxville
(01:59:17):
popped out and singled in a run.
Speaker 2 (01:59:23):
Now the one one.
Speaker 1 (01:59:24):
The first pitch is a curveball, outside ball on one
ball to those strikes. Oh, if we win this one,
the World Series will start here Wednesday against the Yankees.
But we gotta win this ball game. One ball, no strikes,
the pitch outside ball, two two balls in the thick
(01:59:52):
down Maxville, that little fellow, but he can sting that ball.
The onfield plays him shallow that don't expect him to
hit for power. Expect him to hit for power. Two balls,
no strikes. I have a stretch and from the vel
(02:00:14):
here's the fedge. I round all around.
Speaker 2 (02:00:17):
If fos hand, there's a little gonna try to score.
Christopher formers of the all.
Speaker 1 (02:00:22):
And the Cardinals have another run. Maxville single to right
and the car and here comes Casey sting alive from Maxville.
Certainly is a tone for that pop live. He's driven
in two runs and the Red Birds lead five to
(02:00:44):
three with two arts and putcher Bob Gibson coming out.
Jack Fisher all right hand. There's going to be the
next picture, what emotion packed. With the installation of dal
Maxville into the lineup, you can imagine what went through
his mind, the mind of anyone who would come into
(02:01:06):
a game to signing the pennant, Harry, this young man
had only been to the plate twenty two times prior
to this ball game, and he has come up with
two clutch hits and driven in two big runs, perhaps
the biggest runs of his career. Hi, they will be
Jack Fisher. So let's get a later report now as
(02:01:30):
he walks in from the bullpen from Cincinnati. Here in
the bottom of the sixth inning, the Reds are betting
with the one out. They have a man at first,
and Ego Ruiz is not the plate pal, he's.
Speaker 2 (02:01:43):
Leading mind and nothing. And Harry, it's good to hear
that good news.
Speaker 1 (02:01:46):
In day Louis Hi, Jack Fisher takes over the third pitcher.
He started the ball game yesterday was knocked out. Cisco
started today then Wakefield. Rob Gibson, who is stemy trying
(02:02:15):
for his nineteenth victory when he lost warmed to nothing.
Friday would be the picture of record if the Cardinals
can hold us leave so he still would have a
chance to win his nineteen. Sadeki has won twenty, Simmons
(02:02:39):
is won eighteen. Gibson will be trying for number nineteen
and a youngster from Webster Girls. Billy Southworth playing in
a major League game, just hit his first home run.
Billy Southworth, playing for the Braves, is homeward with a
man on. He's a graduate from Webstergros High School. A
(02:03:01):
great athlete. Over there, Well, Bob Gibson's going to be
the hitter. We have runners at first and third. Maxville,
who was driven in two runs today. He singled on
the ground just beyond the glove of that crane pool. HEO,
(02:03:28):
what a finish. You all enjoying yourselves here at the
Bob Park today. Wonderful? All right, here's Bob Gibson now,
and here's the pitch, and it's a slider outside. Gibson
(02:03:52):
a good hitting pitcher. Five to three in favor of
the Cardinals. We're in the last of the fifth. Phillies
have a big lead over the reds Now the stretch
and the pitch on the way he folded out of
play into the upper deck. One ball and one straight.
(02:04:33):
There's the hesitation from the belt. The pitch on the
way he was gonna bund but he missed it. Strike
to two strikes and the ball. It's a tough pitch
to bunt, caught the outside corner at the knee. Two
strikes and the ball now ready from the ball Fisher
(02:05:03):
steps back. Two strikes, one ball, the pitch slider outside,
and that even's it up with two balls, two stripes,
(02:05:25):
two balls, two strikes, the fetch to Gibson, and here
it is hi pop fowl might go on to play
over to the stands and nobody can reach you. Two balls,
two strikes. The Cardinals with a chance to clinch the
(02:05:47):
National League pennant as the Reds are trailing, nined to nothing,
the red Birds leading five to three. Fish, you're getting ready. Oh,
the fates wouldn't be so cruel as to deprive, is
(02:06:08):
this one?
Speaker 2 (02:06:08):
Would they?
Speaker 1 (02:06:11):
Two balls, two strengths, a stretch, the pitch he struck
him by. Gibson goes down. Swing. Why that ends the inning?
But a good inning, three run score on three hits,
no airs, two left. The Cardinals are strand at seven,
(02:06:31):
and at the end of five the Cardinals five, the
Mets three. Well, here are you going to the six?
Charlie Smith, who homered and pomped up, will be the
hitter against Bob Gibson. Let's go to Cincinnati. Now right,
what happened in the bottom of a six, Well, Harry,
(02:06:52):
we're going into the zelen now the Reilly's due leading
nine to nothing. These Reds can do a thing against
the Jim Bunning's the law.
Speaker 2 (02:06:59):
You three hits, drug on four and walk No. One
and Tony Taylor will lead off.
Speaker 1 (02:07:04):
Here in the here's Charlie Smith in the first pitch,
swung on an old fly ball and a short center
flip coming on and he makes the cat. Smith popped
the flood in short center field.
Speaker 2 (02:07:17):
One out. Well, I know there's gonna be a lot.
Speaker 1 (02:07:23):
Of commotion and excitement after the game if it ends
like we all pray it does. So as we go along,
we certainly want to express our appreciation on behalf of
everybody up here for your loyalty and friendship down through
the years. It's been a hectic, barbless wonderful year. There's
(02:07:44):
a pitch to Bob Taylor, and it's a curve strike
call to our stations along the line, to our originating
station with Bob Hyland, to our Gardner Advertising agency. Here's
a pitch. There's a curved strike call off Bill Fisher
and Ed Lambia to all the people here at the ballpark,
(02:08:08):
Doggie Lynch and Emma Bach and Ed Keating and Eddie Mesher,
among others. Two strikes, no balls. That pitch to Taylor's outside.
To our various engineers, our originating station. Roy May was
in Cincinnati today for Jack Buck and for Jerry Gross.
(02:08:29):
Here's a pitch, hot shot the left, Oh, grunt made
a great effort which a single, and Taylor is on
with his second. It so Johnston case. We don't have
a chance at the end of the game and all
the excitement, but might be be existing to Bernie Fox
and the rest of them fellows who do so so
(02:08:52):
much for us. Too many of the engineers to mention,
but we mentioned them all after every game. Here's that
crane pool. Oh, here's a threat. The left handed died
of the pitch is a strike Hall. He drove in
the only run against Gibson Friday night, five to three.
(02:09:13):
The Cardinals are leading now from the dout the pitch low.
To our sponsors, those on the Dugout Show and those
on the Scoreboard Show, and above all those on the
Baseball Bush, Bavarian Beer in the American Tobacco Company. One
(02:09:38):
bore on one strike, the pitch on the way, the
crane pulls a strike call two strikes in them all.
We're in the sixth, five to three in favor of
the Cardinal, who would like to get a few more runs,
(02:09:59):
like about seven more. Two strikes, one ball and the
pitch on the leg, fastball outside save enough for two balls,
two strikes, Yeah, two balls, two strikes, Ed Craneful waiting.
(02:10:24):
Here's the pitch, low outside ball three three balls, two
strikes on Ed Cranefool, a dangerous left handed father who's
hit ten home rounds, including a big one with two
on yesterday. Gotta worry about him. The Cardinals leading only
by two, it's still anybody's ball game. Three balls, two
(02:10:44):
strikes the stretch. Here's the pitch. He walked him. So
that minute, first and second, with one out, let's go
to Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (02:10:56):
Right seventh.
Speaker 1 (02:10:57):
The Billies now lead ten as Tony Taylor going on
Bobby Ryan's sacrifice fly back to you, Harry, So the
Phillies continue to add. They now lead ten to nothing.
Speaker 2 (02:11:09):
In the seven.
Speaker 1 (02:11:12):
Here's George Altman, left handed batner. Bob Gibson. Altman represents
the lead run of the plate. The stretch here's the pitch.
He swings and he misses strike walk, one strike in
the ball. The wind blowing out towards right field, and
(02:11:34):
you gotta worry about that every time a left handed
batter comes up. Gordon Richardson starts limbering up. Gibson pinched
a tough ball game Friday night. Here's the stretch. The
pitch to Altman low and that evens it up. One ball,
one strike. Altman has walked and singled in his ball.
Speaker 2 (02:11:56):
Again. The Mets.
Speaker 1 (02:12:05):
Threatening here in the sixth. The pitch is on the way,
a bouncing ball. That's fall the ball. You could see
Altman trying to pull because the wind is blowing strongly
towards right. Any ball hit it all well will be carried.
Speaker 2 (02:12:18):
Out of here.
Speaker 1 (02:12:22):
And Altman represents the lead run two strikes in the ball.
The cardinal lead is only two. Two strikes in the ball.
Now the stretch, the hesitation, and the pitch on the
(02:12:44):
way curve into the dirt. He really tried to snap
that one up. Two balls, two strikes, one out, runners
at first and second. The ball game of the sixth
Bob Gibson waiting, I'm a stretch. Here's the pitch to Altman,
(02:13:09):
a ground ball to Bill White, He's got it, gives
it a Gibson covering. The runners advance the second and third.
The pitcher'll be coming up. Alton rolled out from Bill
White to Bob Gibson. And now let's see Jessee Gander
is gonna be the pinch hitter. Gander's gonna pinch hit
(02:13:30):
a left handed batter with power. We're gonna pause here
for station identification. This is the Cardinals Baseball Network. Gam
Wakes and cam Wicks up. I'm Saint Louis manager Johnny
Keena talking to Bob Gibson. Gander a left handed batter.
He's hit seven homers, driven in thirty five runs, batting
(02:13:50):
two seventy one. He's always dangerous, but particularly on this
kind of a day with the wind blowing strongly towards right,
you have to keep repeating that because that can be
a big factor. It's already been one on a pop
fry that was blown away from dal Maxville. Looking back,
(02:14:10):
a Gander hit a home run off Bob Gibson in
a ball game earlier. So he has had good success
against Bob Stinkle. Perhaps remember that he hit a two
run first inning, home run, and a ballgame played here
in Saint Louis. Eventually, Gibson hung on to win the ballgame,
but he can hit the ball out even without a win.
(02:14:31):
Good power. Sam Gibson's gonna stay in there, and he'll
pitch to Jesse Gander. There's two out, and the Mets
will have a new pitcher, Bill Hunter, facing the Cardinals
in the six They a'n't gonna rock Gander intentionally to
(02:14:56):
get the Bobby Klouts dary move, because the lead run
of the ball game, Gander is going to be intentionally
passed Klaus, who's had a single in a double two
out of three. Klaus against Gibson Friday night fanned twice,
(02:15:16):
but that a base hit. So the lead run will
be at first base with two out, and Klaus, the
right handed batter, will be coming up intentional pass. We're
in the sixth, Bobbie Klaus up there and Roy McMillan
(02:15:41):
will be nict. So Gibson in a jam. Now the
line up in here is a pitch. It's a straight car,
a one strike, and the balls fast moving slider caught
(02:16:05):
the outside caught, one strike, no balls, two men are out.
Here's a pitch, slider missed outside. That evens it up.
Bobbie Klaus batting two twenty one, right handed batter Gibson
(02:16:26):
getting ready. Now the wind up, but here's the pitch
on the lay he's swinging to miss, strike two, two
strikes and the ball. We're in the sixth, the Cardinals
leading five to three, right hand by the wading.
Speaker 2 (02:16:53):
Now the line.
Speaker 1 (02:16:54):
Here's the pitch on the lay. He fouled, tipped it back,
two strikes in a and Klaus was trying to hit
that ball in the right field. Bob Gibson gets set,
aces are jammed. Now the wind up, and here's the pitch.
(02:17:18):
J just missed with it inside, and it evens up
with two balls, two strikes. The right hand batter digging in.
He hit his fourth foreman of the year yesterday. Two balls,
two strikes. Here's the wind up. Here's the pitch. All
three now and we're really in a jam. The runners
(02:17:43):
will be going three balls, two strikes. They want to
look at the baseball he got out in front of
Bobbie Klaus. But now has come down to a crucial pitch.
Three balls and two strikes, two out, bases loaded, Cardinals
leading only.
Speaker 2 (02:18:03):
Five to three.
Speaker 1 (02:18:15):
Crowd, quiet, you've got air a pin dram three balls,
two strikes the stretch. Here's a pitch. Everybody going forced
in or eye. He walked him and now that makes
it five to four. And here is a tough hitter
(02:18:37):
in the clutch Rhy McMillan. He doubled in two runs
in a fifth to put him into the lead. He
comes up again in the spot where he can put
him into the lead. Gordon Richardson and Bob Humphrey in
the boat back. Gibson has walked three men in the sitting.
(02:18:58):
Now the wind up, and here's the pitch outside ball one,
one ball, no strikes. At the end of seven innings,
the Phillies lead the Reds ten to nothing. But we
have our own problems here one ball, no strikes.
Speaker 2 (02:19:16):
The pitch.
Speaker 1 (02:19:17):
Now a bouncing ball up the middle of Maxville is
there and he steps on the back for the foreside.
A high hopper the Maxville fielded while running to his right,
stepped on the bag for the force play. The inning
is over, one run, one hit, no hair's three left,
(02:19:40):
and we going to the bottom of the six. The
Cardinals five, the Mets four all were going to the
bottom of the six and we'll have the trump of
(02:20:01):
the batting order against Will Hunter, who did a fine
relief job against the Cardinals in a game the Daylancisco
beat US two to one. Will Hunter will be the pitcher,
(02:20:22):
and Jesse Gander. Gander will be batting in the ninth slot,
and Hunter, the pitcher, will be hitting in the sixth
spot and Hawk Taylor's out of the ball again. This
one is nip and tuck, five to four in favor
(02:20:43):
of the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth, while
at the end of seven in Cincinnati the Phillies lead
ten to nothing. The Cardinals could clench the pen with
a victory. We gotta win to clench it. If we lose,
there would be a three way time. All right, here's Flood.
(02:21:11):
He's hitless, nothing out of two. Bill a Hunter on
the hill. There's the pitch on the way. It's a fastball,
strike car Hunter, a hard throwing left hander. Now the line,
(02:21:33):
the pitch on the way, hot shot to the shot stop.
Speaker 2 (02:21:38):
McMillan's got it.
Speaker 1 (02:21:39):
Over the first base in time. So Flood rolls out
to Roy McMillan. That will bring up Loue Brock he's
had one out of two. He's been on base every time,
once with a base hip, once on an air, once
on the wall, one out nobody on five to four
(02:22:04):
in favor of the cardon.
Speaker 2 (02:22:08):
The wind up.
Speaker 1 (02:22:08):
Now the pitch is on the way, a line drive
base hit in the left center. He might be able
to get a double out of it. He's around first,
He's gonna try for a second. Here's Alphand's froll besca
so Bron doubles in the left center. He just took
advantage of almonds weak throwing arm, no question about it.
(02:22:32):
Harry Kilts wasted no time here. That did Rock and
Benson on the play earlier on the base hit to
Alphan and left field sent McCarver in a situation earlier,
and there was no hesitation knowing the capabilities of the outbeaters,
and especially Alfan, who was with the ball club. Here
now is Bill Wayne, a man who's scoring position with
(02:22:54):
one ulf the Cardinals leading by a run five to four.
The stretch and the pitch, there's a cry why Rock,
It might be that could be a.
Speaker 2 (02:23:12):
Whole around.
Speaker 1 (02:23:14):
Listen at a crowd, look at those red Birds in
that dugout everybody's standing up, and the Cardinals leads seven
(02:23:40):
to four. Now, where is that a happy dugout.
Speaker 2 (02:23:54):
Here?
Speaker 1 (02:23:54):
And now is Kenny Layer? That was White's twenty first
home run. There's a pitch by a hundred and it's high.
Tell us nothing but the head left handers? Is he Harry?
He really teed up and that would look like a
two iron drive. It kept going higher and higher, landed
(02:24:16):
out on Grand Avenue. Here's a pitch to Bowyer now
and it's high and outside. Ball to two balls and
no stripe. The Red Birds lead seven to four. Bottom
of the sixth. Cincinnati is losing ten to nothing in
the eighth. Here's a pitch to Kenny Boyer and it's
(02:24:39):
high and outside. All three a double by Brock and
a homer by White. White now has one hundred and
two RBIs for the year, third straight year. Of course,
he's driven in one hundred runs or more. We had
(02:25:00):
exactly one hundred and two two years ago. Down the line,
and here's the pit hinde inside. We walked in and
the crowd hungry for more runs to really clinch it.
In nineteen sixty two, White drove in one hundred and
(02:25:21):
two runs. Pat of three twenty four. Last year he
had twenty nine homers that year rather twenty homers and
drove in one hundred and two Last year twenty seven homers,
one hundred and nine rbi, and this year twenty one
homers and one hundred and two rbi. While you're on
(02:25:44):
at first base, one out. They grew up the bott
a stretch. Now have a pitch high fastball. Grill too
drove in a run in the fifth inning and also
(02:26:06):
scored one on a four when he let off of
the numble. One ball, those strikes, ninety three games will
win the pennant. The Cardinals won ninety three last year
in finty six games out their ninety third victory. If
(02:26:28):
they get it today, will clench the pennant. One ball,
those strikes the patch five by into the stands. One ball,
one strike did group the leader. Two runs are in
(02:26:56):
the Red Birds league seven to four. Bill White hit
went out of sight. Bill Hunter getting ready, and now
the stretch from the boat and the pitch to growth
strike call. Two strikes in the ball, the fastball over
(02:27:16):
the inside corner.
Speaker 2 (02:27:19):
Right hand hit her up there.
Speaker 1 (02:27:21):
Cardinals again with a three run lead. In fact, this
is the longest lead seven to four. They led one
to nothing, tied one one, then led two to one,
then behind three to two, then led five to three,
and now leads seven to four. The stretch the pitch
(02:27:44):
to Growth and here it is strong and he miss
struck him out. Growth swung in a high fastball and
struck out. And then we'll bring up the Carver. Seven
to four. The Cardinals lead in the the six.
Speaker 2 (02:28:01):
Macarver left handed batty.
Speaker 1 (02:28:03):
He doubled in the second and scored our first run.
He's had one out of two. Now the sign giving
(02:28:27):
ready and the pinches on the way to Mcarver. There's
your gold right back. It might be out of here,
it could be it's off the screen. There's another man
gonna scar.
Speaker 2 (02:28:41):
There's Macarver shopping a second.
Speaker 1 (02:28:43):
He's gonna be caught now between second and fir, here's
Charlie Smith.
Speaker 2 (02:28:48):
Hey.
Speaker 1 (02:28:48):
The throw hits Macarver bounces on the left right fail.
Speaker 2 (02:28:52):
Now he's trying for third.
Speaker 1 (02:28:53):
The pro is gonna get him. He's out, but Tim
doubled out. The right field screened and the Cardinals lead
eight to four, and getting back the second day safely
to throw hit him on the shoulder and bounced in
the right, but Christopher recovered it and threw the third
and the Carver was off.
Speaker 2 (02:29:14):
So it's a double.
Speaker 1 (02:29:16):
I run down it in form of Carver's Boy or
Scord all the way from first. It's a beginning for
the Red Birds and score three. There were three hits,
and let's see if they charge an air and nobody
left on base at the end of six, the Cardinals
(02:29:36):
eight and the Mets four.
Speaker 2 (02:29:39):
Ye, we go to the top of the seven.
Speaker 1 (02:29:48):
Confetti's already been streaming all over the place. Oh, if
this can hold up until the end of the top
of the name, this joint will go crazy. The factor
might be crazy. Now I know I am eight to
four in favor of the Cardinals. You know, let's just
(02:30:13):
for a moment, go back to Cincinnati, right.
Speaker 2 (02:30:17):
Are you there? You're here? Ay, We're in the bottom
of the eighth. They're two out.
Speaker 1 (02:30:22):
Jim Bunning continues to be superb. The Billy still leads
ten to nothing, and the fans have started to leave here. Okay,
so that game's going to end before this one. Here's
Joe Christopher to lead off the seventh. Vimy, we're in
the top of the seven. Eight to four in favor
(02:30:44):
of the Cardinals. Now the line up by gifts in
the finch, Christopher ducks out of the way. Ball on, Well,
I'm glad that game in Cincinnati is lopsided. I don't
think we could stand any more excitement. One ball, no strengths.
(02:31:10):
Here's a pitch on the way and it's high and inside.
Speaker 2 (02:31:13):
Ball two.
Speaker 1 (02:31:15):
The Phillies are leading ten to nothing. The Cardinals are
winning eight to four. If that continues, the Cardinals clinch
the pen in today with a ninety third victory. Two balls,
no strakes. Joe Christopher, the hitter here in the seventh.
Now the pitch inside did it? He claims it hit him,
(02:31:38):
and it did sad by pitch ball barely ticked him.
Joe Christopher from the Virgin Aisles, just ticked by a
pitch ball. And not to bring up Jim Hickman. Impson
has been struggling. He's walked three, he's hit one, he's
(02:31:59):
allowed one head, he's allowed one run. But he's out
in front eight to four and activity down the bullpen.
Barney Schultz gets up along with Gordon Richardson. So here's
(02:32:26):
Hickman and here comes manager Johnny keenow we might have
a change.
Speaker 2 (02:32:33):
Hair.
Speaker 1 (02:32:35):
Gibson on the hill has been struggling. We're in the seven.
Keen talks to the cardinal pitcher. Big crowd on hand,
must be around thirty thousand. Gibson will stay in there.
Jim hick from the batter, he's all for three today?
(02:33:00):
Are these myths? Don't go down easy at all? The
thing we're scoring runs today because so are they. Eight
to four in favor of the cart. Now Gibson gets setting.
Here's the pitch on the way strength Carl the Hickman
a fastball one strength and of all. Now from the
(02:33:33):
belt the pitch I sow top fall, snake two, two
strengths and nothing. A runner at first, nobody out. We're
in the seven. At the end of eight innings at Cincinnati,
the Phillies ten, the red's nothing. Now the stretch, the pitch,
(02:33:59):
it's high, two strengths and the ball on Jim Hickman
top of the seven, eight to four Cardinals out of
sign and the stretch from the boat, the pitch smonging.
(02:34:21):
He fathered back and boy he had a good cut
at that one. I'm on no more excitement. Let's just
get these guys out one, two, three, get it over
with two strengths and the ball right hand badder digging
(02:34:41):
in and the pitcher on the way, a high pomp
fly on the infield growth calling for the ball, waiting
for he takes it. So Hickman topped, the grilled went
away and here's Charlie Smith. Charlie are right hand advantther
(02:35:02):
tied up the ball game of the home running the fourth.
The Mets tied it up one one at the fourth,
then took the lead three to two in the fifth,
but the Cardinals scored three in the bottom of the
fifth and three in the sixth. Bill White has the
only Cardinal home run. Charlie Smith is a hit, the
only one for the Mets. Down the stretch and the
(02:35:26):
pitch to Smith, it's a straight car, one strike in
the ball, Bob Gibson ready, the pit swung pop flying
on the infield. That's gonna be easy. Maxville under the
(02:35:49):
ball and he has it threw out hand. The top
of the seventh, and I will bring up a pinch hitter.
Speaker 2 (02:35:57):
Now for a hunter.
Speaker 1 (02:36:00):
See who the hitter is going to be. There's two
hour a runner at first, the Cardinals leading eight to four,
the Saint Louis Cardinals with a chance to clinch the
nineteen sixty four pennant. Larry Elliott, a left handed banner,
(02:36:21):
is going to hit for a hundred. Funny how things develop.
About ten days ago, we all were hopeful. We figured
we had an outside chance because we played three games
of the Phillies and knew that the Phillies would have
(02:36:41):
to finish up in Cincinnati, and we figured that they
might have trouble over there. Well, just the opposite. It's
the Rents when they actually played over there, who had
a chance to do something, And it's the Reds about trouble,
losing yesterday and getting trounced today. Larry Ellett, a left
(02:37:11):
hand adviser. There's a pitch by Gibson and it's fastball
outside one ball in our strikes. Elliot hitting two twenty
(02:37:33):
nine with nine hommers twenty two RBIs left handed hitter.
Le stretch the pitch, our high pomp, file out of
play and the count is even up. With a ball
in a strike, we're in the top of the seventh
(02:37:58):
Cardinals lead eight four. Now the stretch ready the pitch.
It's a straight call, fastball right in there. Two strikes
in the off left handed Dotter digging in now ready
(02:38:31):
and the pitch it's a straight call.
Speaker 2 (02:38:34):
He's out of there.
Speaker 1 (02:38:35):
Fastball over the outside cart no hits, no runs, no error.
Speaker 2 (02:38:39):
Is one left. We're going to the bottom half of.
Speaker 1 (02:38:41):
The seventh and eight the Cardinals eight. The Mets four
critique grew about you. Bet I'm particular, and my pell mells.
Speaker 6 (02:38:52):
Prove it particular feedball take particular pleasure, even good day stout.
Speaker 4 (02:39:00):

Speaker 6 (02:39:59):
That particular good taste to use to get particular pleasure,

Speaker 1 (02:40:04):

the American Tobacco Company. We're not going to Cincinnatio as
(02:40:26):
much as we did earlier because of the lopside of
score over there. Thank goodness. Well, let's see now what
the developments are. Right, Hey, all right, Harry. We're going
into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Speaker 2 (02:40:37):
Jim Bunny has been three outs together and it will
all be over here in Cincinnati, and just about half
of this capacity crowd is left of this time ten
to nothing. Billy is going into the bottom of the
ninth Very good.
Speaker 1 (02:40:50):
Ry come in with us as soon as it's over.
Danny Riban will be the new pitcher. Slimble, the right hander,
was obtained from the Brave organization. He pitched in relief yesterday.
(02:41:15):
And as we start the bottom half of the seventh inning,
the score eight to four in favor of the cart,
Mike Shannon will lead it up. Shannon has had one
out of three drove in a run. Here's the wind
(02:41:44):
up now the pitch is on the lay. He swung
and he followed it back one striking the vaults right
hand by a waiting mike straddles a plate. I'll wind
(02:42:06):
up now the pitch is on the way, A bouncing
ball of the third. That's gonna be easy. Here's Charlie
Smiths peg in time one out in the bottom of
the seventh. Here's down Knaxville. This kid has driven in
two runs. Gets a nice hand from the crowd. Popped
up driving a run on the fourth, driving a run
in the fifth. I had a little trouble in a
(02:42:29):
pop frive with a strong wind.
Speaker 2 (02:42:31):
Is blowing.
Speaker 1 (02:42:33):
Seen Even veteran in fielders or outfielders have trouble under
those conditions. The pitch swung off the high five aall
the right center will be caught under the ball is
Christopher two god two out on the bottom of the seventh,
and here is Bob Gibson coming out. He'll get a
(02:42:54):
fine hand from the crowd. Gibson a good hitter fan.
His only time up in this ballgame. Ribin gets set
the wine. Now the pitch is on the way and
(02:43:16):
it's hide inside. The Mets will have the lower end
of the botting order.
Speaker 2 (02:43:22):
In the eighth.
Speaker 1 (02:43:23):
The crane Pool will be starting it off, and then altman,
two dangerous left handed hitters. They're down in the botting
order because Simmons the left handers started for the Cardinal
one ball, no strikes, a pitch hide outside ball too.
There's two out in the bottom of the ninth at
Cincinnati ten to nothing, Philadelphia, two balls, no strikes. There's
(02:43:54):
the line. Now the pitch on the way as eye pop,
foul back and out of play. Two balls, one strike,
fiottom half of the seventh of Cardinals leading eight to four,
(02:44:14):
out a signal ready two balls and a strike. Rivens
pitch he fil tip back, two balls, two strikes, thirty
forty six. Pay here today, two balls, two strikes. Now ready,
(02:44:42):
here's the wind up. Here's the pitch. He struck him
out swinging so at the end of seven, as it's
nothing across from the Cardinals, the score remains the red
Birds eight and the Mets four.
Speaker 6 (02:44:58):
Listen, it was quiet on the banks of the Big
Daytona Speedway.
Speaker 2 (02:45:02):
This was the beginning of a new heritage for Mercury,
Comet robbing, Magnify, love, poets, bobbits like you've never seen before.
Speaker 1 (02:45:13):
A heritage that.
Speaker 2 (02:45:14):
Was back to Daytona, where Comet became the world's one
hundred thousand miles durability champion one.
Speaker 1 (02:45:20):
Hundred thousand miles the banks of the.
Speaker 2 (02:45:27):
Today of hiring new successor to Comet's bout heritage carries
on the spirit of Daytona Commet sixty five.
Speaker 1 (02:45:36):
We couldn't make it much tougher, so we made.
Speaker 2 (02:45:38):
It even livelier, more beautiful, gave it a sleek, low
look of action, more usable pound every Comet engine up
to an optional two hundred and twenty five horse post
eight season new and more beautiful edition of the world's
one hundred thousand miles durability Champion, Mercury Comet sixty five
(02:45:59):
at your Mercury Dealers. Now we're going into the tom
for the eighth iming. Crane Pool the leader off and
here's Jerry Gross to.
Speaker 1 (02:46:10):
Tell you about it. Bob Gibson wines and pitches and
gets the fastball in felt buckle high for a call strike.
Crane Pool ripped us in the series five for nine
prior to this ball game, but he's zero for two
walked his last time up. We're in the eighth Gibson
trying to hold it down. Yeah, Gibson misses with a
(02:46:37):
slider inside. Here's Harry. It's all over her in Cincinnati, Follodelphia.
One hung it up with.
Speaker 2 (02:46:44):
Rory May a great job.
Speaker 1 (02:46:46):
Boy, come on home for the World Series.
Speaker 2 (02:46:48):
Thank you, Harry, I though wished for very long.
Speaker 1 (02:46:51):
Do you Wednesday at the openers?
Speaker 2 (02:46:54):
Okay, now we gotta do is win it.
Speaker 1 (02:46:58):
Bob Gibson with a one on one con pitches. It
swung on in line fair just beyond the glove of
white out in the right field. It's a base hit.
So we're in the eighth inning and Ed crane Pool
opens up with a line drive basin. Harry's gonna hustle
down and he'll be on the field very close to
(02:47:18):
the corner of the cardinal dugout and be able to
bring you some postgame interviews which I think you'll find
very interesting. Here's George Altman. Altman has a base it
on two trips. Crane Pool is the runner on at
first base. The pitch to Waltman is in there for
a strike. Altman walked in the third, singled up the
(02:47:44):
middle in the fifth, and bounced to the first basement.
Bob Gibson ready to work. We're in the eighth inning.
The pitch is swung on hit out in the left
field who Brock loses it momentarily in the sun, then
backs up and makes the catch, goes back into the infield.
One down, and Bob Gibson has only five outs to
(02:48:08):
get to nail down a pennant for the nineteen sixty
four National League Race and the Cardinals.
Speaker 8 (02:48:18):
Im Marks and camrx FM Saint Louis Men don't miss
Hill Brothers Big worksho say Well first quality heavy duty
work shoes, choice.
Speaker 1 (02:48:25):
Of high Tops and Oxford. It's now just four eighty
eight at Hill Brothers eighth inning. Five Gibson's pitches. If
fastball gets away from the Carver inside, goes back to
the screen and moving on to second bases Ed crane
Pool Redbirds have out hit the Mets eleven to nine.
(02:48:48):
Cardinals leading eight to four. We're in the top of
the eighth inning. Mcarver made a good save on the
ball in the sixth inning on a two to two
count to George Albmyn, went down in the dirt, knocked
the ball down. One ball in those strikes. The pitch
(02:49:09):
to Gander swung On hits sharply down to boy Ken
stays with it on one bound throws and gets him
two down and the rudder at second holes on. Let's
pause for station identification. This is the Cardinals Baseball Network.
Speaker 8 (02:49:24):
You're listening to KMOX and km XPM, the voice of
Saint Louis twenty four hours a day. Once again, an
exciting ball game. Let's go back to Bush Stadium. Gibson
ready is we bring you back to action. Here on
(02:49:45):
the top of the eighth, with two down, the pitch
to the right handed hitter, the leadoff man, Bobby.
Speaker 1 (02:49:49):
Files is in there for a strike. Files says, sky
to center, single to third, double the right and walk
right handed batter on second base. It's at crane bull.
Gibson's one strike pitch is a fastball that hits the
corner the glove of McCarver and bounces away and moving
on to third base. On the play will be the
(02:50:14):
runner down at second. It's a pass ball against McCarver
running out at third. It's eight to four eighth inning
Bobby Klaus against Gibson. The pitch just missus outside. Two
balls in a strike. Gibson came out of the ball game.
Speaker 2 (02:50:37):
With runners on.
Speaker 1 (02:50:40):
Second base. McMillan was on second. The pitch is swung
on the mist strike two. McMillan was on second after
doubling two home in the fifth inning, and he forced
Christopher to sky to Shannon and got Hickman on a
ground ball to the catch. You're a number. Two balls
(02:51:01):
and two strikes, two down. Klaus swings and he files
it back into the screen. Activity in the bullpen, Varney
Schultz and Gordon Richardson are right and left handed, respectively.
Looking ahead to the last of the seventh it'll be
(02:51:22):
the pitcher spot coming up for the Cardinals. Eight to four.
Gibson is ready. Two balls, two strikes, two out. The
pitch to the right hander, a fastball that drives him
back in the count is full, three and two out
on deckets Roy McMillan. Gibson's fastball moving inside Gibbe as
(02:51:42):
you know pitch State innings on Friday, He's been strong,
three balls, two strikes. The pitch hurd on Murph He's
kick him out. Bob Gibson and registers his second strikeout
here in the top of the eighth inning, and in
(02:52:05):
the eighth no runs, one hit, no errors. One runner
left on at third at the end of seven and
a half. The score the Cardinals eighth and the Mets four.
Bowie Gibson's pitching wastes no time, and it's indicative of
these days. Everything rush, rush, rush, hurry up, go here,
(02:52:28):
go there. You know what I mean. But there's one
thing that'll never be rush and you guessed it. Push
Bavarian beer. It takes time to brew a really good beer.
Time for aging, time to get that rugged but delicate flavor,
time for natural carbonation. Sure it takes more time to
brew push and costs more too, but the full bodied
(02:52:49):
satisfaction that you get with Bush is still yours to
enjoy at popular prices. Get to know the beer that's
naturally brewed slow and easy. Push Bavarian beer. Get to
know flavor for the fun.
Speaker 7 (02:53:02):
Of it or.
Speaker 1 (02:53:05):
For the labor. Wherever you go, break up.
Speaker 2 (02:53:15):
Here.
Speaker 4 (02:53:15):
You want to get to know.
Speaker 1 (02:53:17):
Here's flavor you want to get to know because Bush
is brewed the way beer was meant to be brewed,
the natural way. Get Bush.
Speaker 2 (02:53:25):
There's a flavor in Ousberarian Brad.
Speaker 1 (02:53:38):
Now we go into the last half of the seventh inning,
or out of the eighth inning. I beg your pardon.
Speaker 2 (02:53:44):
Last of the eighth.
Speaker 1 (02:53:45):
Inning, and it'll be Kirk Flood, top of the batting order,
Red Birds leading eight to four. Dennis Rivan out on
the mound for the New York Mets, driving wines and
pitches to Flood and miss outside one ball, no strikes.
The Cardinals struck one running the second one in the fourth,
and three in the fifth and sixth, trying and nail
(02:54:06):
down the pennant Here in Saint Louis, Dennis Riban pitches
now to Kirk Blood swung on hit up into the
air at the deep right center back goes the right
feet of the ball is way back back.
Speaker 2 (02:54:15):
It's gone all round. Kirk clod has just put the
Cardinals out on top nine to four, and.
Speaker 1 (02:54:35):
Look at that fence.
Speaker 2 (02:54:40):
Flood it's his fifth home run of the campaign, and
lou Frock is the hitter where the Red Birds adding
another here in the last half of the eighth.
Speaker 4 (02:54:49):
In a.
Speaker 1 (02:54:53):
Rockets a ground ball poul down the right fiel line.
Blood get it's his first base hit here in the
eighth inning and the Cardinals lead nine to four. Thirty
and forty six frenzied fans on hand curveball slap foul
(02:55:17):
into the left field bleachers now balls at two strikes.
Activity now in the bullpen for the Mets. A left
hander locks up, then warming up. Dennis Riban came out
in the ball game and retired him in the seventh,
(02:55:39):
but Kirk Flood has rocked him for a home rude
two strikes on loop Rock. Ribin's pitch inside drives him back.
One ball, two strikes. We gotta win this one. We
win this one. The World Series opens on Wednesday against
(02:56:00):
the New York Yankees. The pitch rock takes it in there,
strike three. Call Rivan gets his second strikeout, and Bill
White will be the hitter. And what a big blow.
Bill had to drive in two in the sixth had
(02:56:20):
a home run off the left hander Will Hunter. White
is two for four. The photographers already around the Cardinal box,
around Colonel voice. Bill White is ready one out. We're
in the last of the eight denning. The Cardinals lead
(02:56:40):
nine to four. White takes a fastball inside one million,
one hundred forty three thousand, two hundred and ninety four.
The Cardinals have drawn this year. The pitch to White
Wine like I'll pull it out to deep center back,
goes way back and makes the cat so we have.
Speaker 2 (02:57:03):
Two down.
Speaker 1 (02:57:10):
A home run by Kurt Flood to open the last
of the eighth inning. Here's the captain, Kenny Boyer. The
players tell us one of the most underrated ball players
in the National League. Boyer another tremendous season, twenty four
home runs. He drove in a run in the fifth inn.
(02:57:32):
Boyer today with that big double is one for two
and the pitch to him is a ball right hander
against the right hander. We're in the last of the
eighth inning and the score here at Bush Stadium is
nine to four. Rivan is ready and the pitch to
Boyer fastball in there in the inside corner of the
(02:57:55):
count one and one. Interesting interview to follow the ball
game with Harry Carrey in the dugouten in the dressing room,
so wherever you may be. Hang on two outs, last
of the eight, one on one count to boy The
pitch swung on, it filed back into the screen. Simmons
(02:58:17):
and Cisco started neither around. Kurt went four to third
plus two hitters, gave up three runs, seven hits, struck
out none and walk one. A wind blown double led
to his down ball. Gibson has been brilliant in relief.
Cisco started, gave up four runs seven hits in four
innings plus three, walked three and struck out nun Casey Stangles.
(02:58:38):
Since then has used four pitches. The one two pitch
on its way to Kenny Boyer with two down in
the eighth over but low in the count, holds at
two to two. No one has left the ballpark yet, Philadelphia,
(02:58:59):
I've beended since you win here in the Cardinals for
the first time in eighteen years, we'll have a pennant.
The pitch to Boyer crossfire outside, just missing three and two.
Harry Carry standing by near the box down to the
(02:59:24):
right of the dugout. The three two pitch to Boyer
is ball four over but low, so Boyer walks.
Speaker 2 (02:59:30):
With two down.
Speaker 1 (02:59:31):
Here in the last of the eighth inning, Dick Curtill
be the hitter road bounced to the first baseman, had
a double the right center scored a run, has struck
(02:59:51):
out and grounded out with a pitcher getting an assist
in the second basement, Klaus making the play. Cardinals nine
New York Mets four. Last of the eighth, two down,
Dick drought the hitter ten Boyers on first base. They
(03:00:17):
changed balls. No activity in the Cardinal bullpen. Wednesday, the
Big day. If the Cardinals and Bob Gibson can get
three outs in the ninth inning, and as we look ahead,
it'll be Roy McMillan, Joe Christopher, and Jim Hickman two,
three and four in the order for the New York Mets.
(03:00:38):
Were out trying to get some more swings and hits
them pop up off the right field side, down the
right field line. Back goes prain Pool coming on and
unable to make the catches Christopher as he runs into
the bullpen down the right field line in foul territory.
(03:01:12):
Jute down here in the last of the eighth inning,
one strike on Dick Grot where is it? First? Cardinals
leading nine to four, riving as ready he's at the
belt in the pitch, swung on a numb fouled off
to the left. Cardinals took a one nothing lead on
(03:01:33):
a double by McCarver and a single by Shannon in
the second. The Mets came back to tie it on
a home run by Smith in the fourth, and then
went ahead by two in the fifth inning. Is McMillan
doubled in two in the fifth. The Cardinals came bouncing
back with three runs and three in the sixth come
(03:01:55):
from behind club all year long. Two strikes on Growth,
the cross fires outside and it's one of two, not
only in the bag against the runner Boyd. First base
is crane Pool, Cardinals on top by five right hand
Arrivan is ready the one two pitch to grow over
(03:02:19):
but low and the count goes to two. Two heroes
in the game.
Speaker 2 (03:02:25):
Well, hell, you.
Speaker 1 (03:02:25):
Could find almost everyone white two rb eyes Boy one, Growed,
McCarver one each in Shannon two and dal Maxville, a
fellow who had to start because of the injury to
Hobber with two big rbiyes.
Speaker 2 (03:02:40):
Two to two.
Speaker 1 (03:02:41):
Count out of the right handed hitter Growth two down
the pitch, he's swung on, it popped up. Here's gone
to the catcher coming back. He's under the ball and
goes in a circle and a lands fair. No, it
goes foul, they say.
Speaker 2 (03:02:53):
Just foul.
Speaker 1 (03:02:55):
Look like it's kicked up some chark. They landed eight
feet to the right. The plate gander went in a
complete circle and the ball kicked up some chalk. But
it was the chalk on the extreme front portion of
the left handed hitting batter's box. So it's a coowl ball,
(03:03:17):
two balls and two strikes. Harry Carry getting set to
send you an interview and bring you also the ninth
inning of play by play from down right next to
the cardinal dugout two balls, two strikes, two out, last
of the eighth cards on top by five. The pitch
(03:03:38):
swung on line out in the right field the right
theeer Christopher goes back. The ball is up against the wall.
Here is Poyer around second to third. Group goes into second.
Lawyer holes at third, and it's a double for Dick drops.
(03:04:00):
Kurt Flood opened up with a home run. Rock struck
out White Sky, Dessenter or walked in the eighth inning,
and Groat has just doubled runners at second and third.
Here's Tim McCarver. McCarver looked. It looked as though macarver
(03:04:24):
would get one out of here in the sixth, but
it hit the screen. He's two for three, driven in
a run. There comes manager Casey Stingle, gonna bring Locke
(03:04:45):
on in the ballgame. Stingle comes out, so coming out
of the ballgame will be Dennis Riben. He came on
in the seventh, retired the side one, two, three. Now
he comes out out of the ball game. So Ripend
has pitched one end, two third plus two hitters innings
(03:05:12):
and the two runners on base, he of course will
be responsible for in the event they eventually score. Selo
Ma Carver, we'll have to face the left hander Ron Locke,
(03:05:44):
So Ryan Locke comes out in relief. The left hander
Locke was born in Wakefield, Rhode Island, resides in Shannick,
Rhode Island. We're still in the last of the eighth inning.
(03:06:09):
The Cardinals win this ball game, won't a finish. They
will have won their twenty seventh ball game by losing
only eleven since August twenty fourth, and at that time
the Red Birds were eleven games behind. Dick Curtill be
(03:06:32):
at second Ken Boyer talking now with Veron Benson is
down at third base. Tim McCarver today doubled in the second,
bounced to the mound in the fourth, walked in the fifth,
and doubled it right in the sixth. Who's eventually hung
up and run down? I want to remind you the
Saint Louis football Cardinals defeated Washington twenty three to seventeen today.
(03:07:00):
Talk about pressure pressure on the players, But what about
the pressure on the umpires? Eddie Vargo, hal Foreman Bill
Jakowski and Shaggs Crawford. What a job they've done today.
Tim McCarver, the hitter with two down here in the
(03:07:20):
last of the eighth inning, the Cardinals leading by five,
whining and pitching is Ron lock fastball popped up and
back out of play. Roy may Our man in Cincinnati,
reporting with a good news that Jim Bunning rolled to.
Speaker 2 (03:07:38):
A victory.
Speaker 1 (03:07:41):
As Philadelphia ripped Cincinnati ten to nothing. Harry carried downstairs,
set to bring you the ninth inning of play by play.
Jerry Gross standing via up here in the boot, Locks
pitched Tim McCarver fastball. That's up, Hie one and one.
(03:08:02):
Bob Gibson in the ballgame in relief of Kurt Simmons,
shooting for his nineteenth victory. He'll be pitching that ninth
in he Locke is ready. The one to one pitch
to McCarver, just outside for ball two missed with a
breaking ball. Lo Locke is five to eleven. The Mets
(03:08:34):
have been tough. They won twenty four ball games against
the top four teams in the National League this year.
The pitch now of McCarver swung on hit past them
mound down toward second. It's true, what did the seven
peak said in this score? Comes Flawyer in this score
from second to his growth. And the Cardinals now have
taken the lead eleven to four. Redbirds have added three
(03:09:16):
here in the eighth inning, and don't go away. It's
not over yet. Lockout on the mound has just had
a left hander drolling up the middle. It's eleven of four.
The pitch of the right hander Shannon has swung on
a mist one a day from a Carver. Three RBIs
(03:09:41):
the first penn in eighteen years. And look at the
smiles in the Cardinal box. The one strike pitch to
Shannon swung online.
Speaker 2 (03:09:57):
The deep left.
Speaker 1 (03:09:58):
Field back goes off and way back, then comes in
a bit and makes the cuts to retire the side.
Here in the eighth na the ball died, but the
Cardinals didn't die in the eighties. In the eighth inn as,
the Red Birds come up with three runs on three basts,
no errors, one runner left on and at the end
(03:10:19):
of eight innings, with three outs to go for a pennant.
The score the Cardinals elevens the New York Mets four
particular about tease, you bet on particular, and my Pellmells
prove it particular. About teast, you bet on particular, and
(03:10:41):
my shell mouth prove it. You hear it everywhere. Why
because pell Mell's natural mildness means just one thing, smooth,
leasing flavor.
Speaker 6 (03:10:52):
Of particular people, a particular pleasure.
Speaker 1 (03:10:59):
In good taste out peal. Now the favors blending over.
Speaker 6 (03:11:05):
Hundred around, improve that particular good taste to use to
get particular page or that particular people too in the
good taste off pill Now.
Speaker 1 (03:11:18):
Be particular smoke a long cigarette that's long on flavor
by Pellmell. Famous cigarettes, outstanding and they are from the
American Tobacco Company. This is Jerry Gross back at Bush Stadium.
Bob Gibson needs three outs to go now down to
(03:11:40):
the playing field. Here's Harry carry.
Speaker 2 (03:11:44):
This is Harry carrying now down in the Cardinal box.
Speaker 1 (03:11:47):
Ryan McMillan leading off the first pitches of strike car
Cardinal's leading eleven to four top half of the ninth inning,
three outs away from the National League Pennant, McMillan files
a pitch back strike two.
Speaker 2 (03:12:00):
We thought it was.
Speaker 1 (03:12:00):
Exciting upstairs in the boat. We're down here now where
we're right among the fans. We're sitting in Gussie Bush's box,
right behind the Cardinal dugout. Roy McMillan, the bought her
two strikes and nothing. Bob Gibson delivered the pitch high
on inside. Gibson would win his nineteenth game of the year,
the Cardinals with an eleven to four lead. Here on
(03:12:23):
the top of the ninth. Gibson gets set into the wind.
That he goes, and here's the pitch high ball too,
and that evens it up. Two balls, two strikes, Mayor Ray,
Tucker and missus Tucker's sitting right in front of me.
Speaker 2 (03:12:41):
Here August A.
Speaker 1 (03:12:42):
Bush, Junior President of the Saint Was Cardinals, and his
wife August the third and his wife. Here's a pitch
hid inside. Three balls, two strikes on McMillan, the Cardinals
with a seven run lead. How sweet it is.
Speaker 2 (03:13:03):
Here's the pitch, mowly.
Speaker 1 (03:13:05):
What so McMillan starts the ninth with a base on ball. Youah,
The use of Gibson here in relief would indicate that
when the World Series opens here Wednesday afternoon, Ray said
that he probably will be the Cardinal pitcher, and that
might be.
Speaker 2 (03:13:26):
A good development of that because in this.
Speaker 1 (03:13:28):
Small ballpark, small and right field, and the Yankees with
left handed power, the Cardinals would probably prefer to use
south balls here in Saint Louis, whereas at Yankee Stadium,
with a big ballpark, it doesn't make much difference. So
here's Joe Christopher, Christopher hitting three oh one for the season,
right handed battery runner at first base. Nobody out, the
(03:13:50):
Phillies walloped, the Reds tend to nothing on the stretch
and the pitch to Christopher there's a strike.
Speaker 2 (03:13:58):
Car drinking up off.
Speaker 1 (03:14:02):
The Cardinals within three outs of their first pennant since
nineteen forty six. Joe Christopher a little unhappy from the
Virgin Isles. And I know that Armed Forces is carrying
our broadcasts throughout the Caribbean as well as throughout the world. Today.
(03:14:24):
There's a stretch and the pitches on the way. Christopher
swings in this as strike two.
Speaker 2 (03:14:31):
Boh. I don't know if you can hear us.
Speaker 1 (03:14:33):
Here in these what an excited frenzy. This crowd is
in better than thirty thousand people sitting in on the
winning of a pennant.
Speaker 2 (03:14:42):
What I hectic two weeks.
Speaker 1 (03:14:43):
We've had the stretch, the pitch Christopher pops her up
in file territory Bill White? What out.
Speaker 2 (03:14:57):
Right away here on the top of the ninth.
Speaker 1 (03:14:59):
Is Jim Hickman. There used to be in the cardinal organization.
Two more outs to go and the almost impossible achievement
of the Saint Louis Cardinals would have been realized six
and a half back, but about twelve games to go,
about to clinch the pennant? One on Hickman the batter.
(03:15:23):
Gibson gets ready to pitch, and it's a little bit
outside Mcarver behind the plate, a strong wind blowing out
and several hitters have taken advantage of it. Nothing else
really matters on that scoreboard. Here's a stretch and the
pitch to Hickman. He takes it inside ball, two, two balls,
(03:15:45):
no strikes.
Speaker 2 (03:15:47):
McMillan at first.
Speaker 1 (03:15:48):
One out the ball game in the top of the nine,
Rob Gibson, who replaced Kurch Simmons and the six. While
you're at third, growded short Knxville, who has done a
great job substituting for Homi Air at second. Today White
at first, the pitch to Hickman is a straight after these,
(03:16:09):
and this crowd is roaring with every pitch. Now we're
down at the field level and we will later be
in the clubhouse, so stay tuned. Here's the pitch. Ball
three is high, three blows, one strike, went away right handed,
(03:16:32):
Banner digging in, Bob Gibson gets set, Jimmy Hickman the batter.
Let's turn it over six, four to three and out
straight no ball four inside, So Johnny Key coming out
of the dugout.
Speaker 2 (03:16:48):
Now is right handed.
Speaker 1 (03:16:50):
Bonner comes up there, Charlie Smith, and it's gonna be
Bernie Schultz. The knuckles doll are coming in Bob a
while tonight today round, but he just pitched Friday evening
and lost one to nothing, so if he's not his
(03:17:10):
as sharp as usual, there's good reason.
Speaker 2 (03:17:13):
Fun.
Speaker 1 (03:17:15):
We have runners at first and second, one out. Hornie
shoots a knuckleballer coming in the wind blowing strongly, and
that's considered good for a knuckleball pitcher. The Philly's won
from the Reds today, and that's what has caused this
development where the Cardinals needing two outs to clinch a
(03:17:37):
pennant five. Gipson getting a big hand. Listen, Horny Shultz
(03:18:03):
one of the reasons why the Cardinals are in this
enviable position that they are at this moment. This fella
has been fantastic since he joined the Cardinals in August. First,
a knuckleballer who has been credited with something like twelve
or thirteen saves already Vetteran at age thirty eight, seemingly
as major league career was over, went to Jacksonville, hoping
(03:18:28):
that some team might need a little help and if
he did well, might bring him up little dreaming that
it would be the Cardinals who had had him in
spring training. And here he is, Barney Shultz.
Speaker 2 (03:18:41):
And maybe it is.
Speaker 1 (03:18:45):
Poetic at that that Barney Shuls who perhaps has done
as much, if not more, plugging the biggest gap weakness
in the bullpen to make the Cardinals drive possible. Perhaps
it's only fitting that it should be Barnie Schultz who
gets the final two outs necessary for a Pennant winning victory.
(03:19:08):
Charlie Smith up there, he home it earlier, he homered yesterday,
he said twenty out of the Wall Park runners are
at first and second, a seven run lead. Now the
strike ready to pitch on the way, and Smith takes
(03:19:30):
a strength fastball, strike, one strike and no b house
runners at first and second. A double play would.
Speaker 2 (03:19:39):
End it all.
Speaker 1 (03:19:39):
Here way, you're at third row. It a sharp Maxville
at second, White playing back at first. Here's a five ball.
As Charlie Smith went after a low knuckleball, two strikes
and nothing. It takes two outs to be able to
(03:20:00):
say ann iSER Bush first in the brewing industry and
first in the National league. We need two outs to
do that. Two strikes, no ball.
Speaker 2 (03:20:16):
Signal.
Speaker 1 (03:20:16):
Governor Warnie shows, how can you be that cool? Barney
takes his time, leaves fall from the boat, the pitts
and here it is time stuck it up. So Charlie
(03:20:40):
Smith goes down, swinging light hair is right Canille from Springfield, Missouri,
(03:21:01):
right handed daughter riding business down that way. I believe
in me some businesses. Something will be home in Springfield tonight.
Speaker 4 (03:21:10):
M M.
Speaker 1 (03:21:11):
Saint Louis. The runners at first and second, one more
art and the Cardinals will have clinched the pennant. Wannie
Shultz gets ready the stretch. The pitch swings its.
Speaker 2 (03:21:26):
One strike.
Speaker 1 (03:21:27):
The law this card is besides itself FLD for card
I just never heard saying the impossible really happened. Here's
the pitch. It's a wild pitch.
Speaker 2 (03:21:46):
It's the Empire.
Speaker 1 (03:21:47):
The runners advance is second and third. Ed Borgo is
in on that one, a knuckle ball that hopped over
Macarver's met it'll be a pass ball, and runs are
at second and third, with two away, eleven or four
in favor of the Cardinals. Rod kneel about it.
Speaker 2 (03:22:07):
In the ninth.
Speaker 1 (03:22:14):
Here comes Bill jack Kowski down from second days to
see that Ed Bargo isn't hurt. Now all set, one ball,
one straight.
Speaker 2 (03:22:30):
Right now.
Speaker 1 (03:22:37):
The signal given and the wind up by Barney schultzers
to put you on the leg. A ground ball left field.
Two wads are gonna scar and now it's an eleven
and sixth ball. Guy Canelle singles to eleven. So that
makes it eleven to six, two out, one out to go.
(03:22:58):
Here's that greenpool, make no one run, only one run,
eleven to five.
Speaker 2 (03:23:04):
We're down here at the see level.
Speaker 1 (03:23:07):
Only one run's god, as they played a safe events.
Speaker 2 (03:23:11):
Lou Bryant fuddled the ball out there.
Speaker 1 (03:23:15):
But the runner at third base, Hickman, held on. Sorry,
It is eleven to five in favor of the card
and here's ed crane Pool. Five poulf of the ninth inning,
the stretch from the bell. Here's the pitch, the crane pull.
It's a strike, a knuckle ball over the outside corner.
(03:23:35):
One striking the ball, one strike, no ball, d crane Pool.
The batter runners at first and third, two away the pitch,
strike two card with the outside corner. Then Eve and
(03:23:59):
the Cardinals one stake. Come on, if you've never heard
mister Gussie Voyce excited, you just heard him over my shoulders.
Two strikes, no ball, Runners at first and third, the
Cardinals leading eleven o five. Johnny Keen about to bring
the red Birds their first pennanceince nineteen forty six. Two strikes,
(03:24:25):
no ball. Listen to this prow Come on, let's go
gime out by the stretch running everybody standing up the pitch,
(03:24:45):
Hi po pound the screwver's there, The cargo's one repetit.
Speaker 2 (03:24:50):
The car goes on the petter, the cargo run the penner.
Speaker 1 (03:24:54):
Everybody else, Johnny, everybody congratulating everybody.
Speaker 2 (03:25:00):
I don't know if I'll ever get hair. I don't
know if I'll ever get hair.
Speaker 1 (03:25:05):
The card doesn't just won the Bunnet may have on
the foil Josh show up the Telly lay hey, Hony washburn,
I BOMs cut her wh.
Speaker 2 (03:25:19):
Hey tamp titter, he says, I tam r howbout in

Speaker 1 (03:25:29):

Speaker 2 (03:25:32):

Speaker 2 (03:25:39):

Speaker 2 (03:25:42):

didn't like to bok here, mister Bush? Congratulations? How you free?
Speaker 7 (03:25:53):
I never was happier in all my live, long life,
Harry and my gosh Andrew. Eighteen years we're now able
to return to our fine fans, a real penned team,
and we're gonna win the World Series.
Speaker 2 (03:26:06):
That's that's you never dreamed you could get this excited?
Speaker 1 (03:26:10):
Huh?
Speaker 2 (03:26:11):
I never did, but I've enit it. I'm doing your
limb from excitement right now.
Speaker 1 (03:26:16):
I'll tell you that I know how happy you are.
Speaker 2 (03:26:18):
