Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Ken Coleman speaking. We present for you another
game from the Monley collection. We hope that you enjoy.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
This is the number one sports station in the nation,
k MPC, Los Angeles. Well, first of all, the same thing.
Let's find out about the Angels, And right down here
is Dick Enberg opening that is a big of the
Angels hosts the Seattle Pilots. As we begin this nineteen
sixty nine American League season. Our guest is manager Bill Rigney,
(00:35):
and it was all to appropriate, Brig, to just take
your starting lineup and perhaps an note or two about
the players who will form your starting nine this evening.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Well, we're going to lead off tonight Dick with Phil Vass,
who has had probably as good as spring as any
player on our club. He got the most hits in
the club.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
He's a good.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Defensive player, good runner and has a pretty good I
at home fad. As far as the strikestone, he's going
to be in right deal. He'll be leading off, of course,
Jim Forgose he will hit second force and I know
coming off last year, we're looking for great things from
Gym this year. And as he is, Sue, he's probably
in as good as shape as he's ever been in
coming out of spring training, So he's gonna play short
stop and bat number two for us. Jay Johnstone is
(01:14):
gonna play center field tonight, perhaps mainly on the I
guess the last couple of games as Jay's played, he's
hit the ball hard and it was either a question
of getting either Dobbo or he or Repose or a
combination of the two of the four and Vic went
into a little bit of a mix up and been
taking some extra hitting. But Jay has had a hot bat,
So he'll be in center field hitting third Force. Rick
(01:36):
Rei Carter course, who's gonna be one of the big
guns Force. We hope this year is being left field
and we're looking for and I know Rick is too
for a better year than he had nine in nineteen
sixty eight. It might be the year when he's gonna
get it all done for us, and he has as
a pine of years he.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Had last year.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
We're certainly and I know he's looking forward to a
better one than this year. Dick Stewart will be at
first base, hitting behind Rick. He's had a fine spring
and one thing about Dick, you know when he hits it,
I don't think if the matters where he's playing, because
it'll get a carry out of any ballpark.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
That may be a surprise, though Steward or right handed
hitter against the right hander Marty.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Pattons, that's right, well, there'll be certain I think there
may be certain right handers that Dick will be able
to handle. The home runs I think he hit this
spring where mainly against right handers, and watching him, he's
got a good swing going and right now it's early
in the year and I think while he has got
a hot bat that we ought to take advantage of it.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Maybe that's Steward in the number five spot, number six.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
That's our little third base in Leo Rodriguez, who's to
me as one of the keys to this entire Angel
offense this year. I think there's there's going to resolve
revolve around man like Aurelio.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
If he hits the moves, we're going to have a
pretty good attack.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
He's a fine glove, he's a good playmaker, and he's
coming off.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
A season where he.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Was injured and where it was hospitalized after having a
fine start. And I think though that he's learned more.
He's always learned more English and whether that's good or bad, guys,
we don't know. But he's a fine little player and
we're looking for a good year from him. Tommy Satriano
is going to split the catching with Tom Egan. He's
our catcher tonight, off his best year in nineteen sixty eight,
(03:12):
So of course the other glove, the magic glove, is
going to be at second base. Bobby Canopper happy that
his toe is healed enough to play, and I know
he had his best year hitting last year for so
all in all, along with Jim mcglosman, our shouting pitcher,
I'm kind of pleased about this lineup, and I think
that the players. I can sense it around the clubhouse
that they're round pretty tightly and we're ready to go.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
You've gone through it many times as a player and
as a manager. Any advice to a rookie announcer who
is breaking into the big leagues tonight to try to
cool the butterflies a bit.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
There's no way, you know, It's amazing. No matter how
long we play in this game, that first one is
always the first one, and there'll be a butterfly in
every little stomach around here that I you can bet
so you're no different. Come join the flock.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
All right, Thank you for the visiting, I suppose needless
to say, Angel fans, hope that you get off to
a start. Bill Rickney our guest right now. Oh, let's
make the Matt Who's vita matters, the Seattle pilots, Joe
Jilts in his line up. Joey heard from Bill Rigney,
(04:15):
is just starting light up. And how about yours?
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Well, Don, We're going to have Tommy Harper, it's playing
second base. He'll be leading officers, and you know Tom
is a very fast man, is a real playing bass dealer.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
In hitting second, we'll have.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Mike Hegan, who has been probably the standout ballplayer far
as this spring. He'll be in right field, and you
know he can pull the ball to the hole pretty
good when Harper's on base and hitting in the third spot.
As an old nemesis, i'd say, of the both legs,
you said Tommy Davis, who's done a real fine job
first in left field swinging at bat. Another popular player
(04:49):
is being the four spot. Don Minscher, whom everybody knows
out here and who's been hit his uh, I'd say,
completely recovered from all his injuries.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
From this past year. There base, we got Rich.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Rollins, who has been having a good spring in center field,
and hitting six will have Jim Gotzger, who's to uncover
the ground real well, and and he two has been
surprising with the bat in the hitting seventh will be
the catcher Jerry mcnurtney. He only acquired from the White
Sox and he was a great defensive man, as well
(05:21):
as Ray Oyler, who will be batting eighth and playing shortstop.
In our starting pitcher tonight will be an old favorite
from around here, has been got quite a future in
front of him.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
My Marty Patton, I know what about your pitching plans
for tomorrow?
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Our pitching plans while we were going to start the
Steve Barber down but he's come up.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
With a stiff shoulder. Who's going to miss a turn?
But and then his place would have Mike Marshall and
he's out of the Tuger organization. And that's right, Joe.
I just saw Marvin Milks upstairs. He was a little
on the nervous side, how about you.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Well, we all get nervous on the opening day of
the season, just like going into a World Series. I
happen to be in the three World Series and any
time you don't get nervous when they start that first game.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Oh, you got to be nuts. Then, you know, in
nineteen fifty one of Wichita, Kansas, and of course I
Ball Club was in the Cleveland organization, that's the first
time I ever had a chance to see you manage.
And you and Chris Pelakutis, who now is an upire
with the nash lay you tangled a few times. And
from that point on, when was your next opportunity of managing?
Speaker 4 (06:24):
Well, I went on managing the down I managed from
that time all the way up to nineteen sixty two
and when I finished.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Up with the Atlantic Club down.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
There, when we won the Little World Series and everything,
and after that I went over to the Cardinals as
a coach and been with them ever since.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Well, I know this, They've picked quite a guy. And
I don't have to go around and ask too many
people as far as their recommendations or references for Joe Schultz,
because you've established a great name for yourself, and I
know that all of us in the Angels organization kind
of fear this out there. You've put together team that's
going to go out and out a few runs. Well,
we're going to score a lot of runs then.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
But I'll say this, you got to give credit to
the Los Angeles ball club here too. I'd say the
Anaheim Angels. They have a real good ball club and
Bill Rigney's a real fine manager. But it's going to
be a knockdown, drag out affair. And before this season's
over with here, a lot of clubs are going to
hear from us.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
We have at elevated yourself up from the number three spot.
As yet you're you're gonna figure you're gonna settle for
third of the divisions.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Well, I'll be happy to finny. Sare so a lot
of ball clubs that I always did say this, if
the players play the way they're capable of playing, well,
do all right and we have a chance to finish
in claird Place.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Joe want to thank you very much and want to
wish you the best and thank you in nineteen sixty
to nine. Thank you, Joe Schultz, and we'll continue with
Angel warm up in just a moment. California Angels Baseball

(08:49):
opener for nineteen sixty nine California Angels and the Seattle Pilots.
Good having everybody. This is John Wells with Dick Enberg
and Dick nelsoners so good to have you with us.
From that Him Stadium, one of the new entries in
the American League in the Western Division of Seattle, Pilots
take on the Angels this season. The Pilots was part
of the pregame ceremonies have just been introduced. First of all,
(09:11):
their starting lineup, then Joe Schultz, then the rest of
the squad, and now the introduction of the starting nine
for the California Ball Club managed by Bill Rigney. So
what can you possibly say. I have been privileged to
on Hanna for all of the Angels openers since nineteen
sixty one, and I have to say that this is
one that I have certainly looked forward to, and I
(09:33):
think it's mainly because of the men who were in blues.
It's the adult pilots, expansion in the American League and
the creation of divisional plays, and it certainly should be
the outstanding year in the American League of all time.
This place Tenny of the year for baseball shouting pitchers
that I'm Jim mcgloftin will be on the mod for
the Angels. Back is one ten and lost fifteen, Barney
(09:55):
pass and the x Angel will start forth the adult
Barney last year with the California A Club one four
and lost four. We've had music tonight and it has
been provided by the Kingsman Drumma Google car. We've had
a parade of Orange County mayors and beauty queens and
horseless carriages. Paradi units including the Shrine Tim Lizzie's. We've
had Mickey Mouse and the Ambassador Sherry vescos of Disneyland,
(10:18):
nuts very farm float at a high Chamber of Commerce floats,
one of the Navy cruisers float, and some fireworks as well.
Now let's pick up this portion of our pregame ceremonies.
(11:57):
And really, I mean they're like a girl of all
Mond And this is the fitting finale to the expansion
theme the Angels recreating there. In nineteen sixty one entry
out of the American League Bend the Mine the winning
pitcher opener at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, right hander Eli
Gerba Big thirty three, an Alb persons Dadding got the
(12:19):
plate and it was Alb who let off the game
with an astoric kit and Eli's battery mats opening day
in Baltimore. Earl April and responsible the introduction of Alvi
person to have these three on hand. Now you talk
about some goose pimples and little nervousness, and to see, hey,
the right hander pumps is still pumps it pretty well.
(12:41):
Eli Gerber Earl April Alvi person representing the nineteen sixty
one Henry is the American League for the Angels Ben
having getting out of the business at hand. I think
it goes we lands. I think outstanding in the way
of opening night ceremonies out of him stadium. The umpires
(13:01):
are coming out. Let's take a look at the lineups now.
So this is now business as usual as we start
off a brand new American League season. Leading off and
playing at second base for Seattle will be Tommy Harper.
Mike Hegan will be in right field Hegan and right
batting second, to be followed by the left fielders Tommy Davis.
Davis and left. Don Mitcher will be at first base,
(13:22):
Mitcher at first. Rich Rollins will be at third base,
Rollins at third, batting fifth. Jim Gosker will be in centerfield,
goscre in center. Jerry mcnurtney will do the catching for Seattle.
McNerney behind the plate, Ray Euler at short, Oiler at
short batting as Martie Patton the pitcher. Now the Angels
take the field part the Angels there. Leadoff man will
(13:47):
be rightfield at mill Voss. Jim Spregosi will be at shart,
Jay Johnstone in centerfield batting third, Rick right Card in
left field. As a malarial bombardment is on hand now
right guard and left batting for it. Neck Stewart will
be at first base, Rojo Rodriguez will be at third,
Rodriquez in third, batting second, Tommy Satriano will do the catching,
(14:11):
Sir Thomas behind the plate, and the second base Bobby
Cano can off a second athavitcher Reckles and his friends
the Redhead Jim mcglenlin say listen for your name during
home run for the Money Kent and Newport and Crew's
exciting new game. The night's bam run inning will be
the bottom of the fifth in our prize one thousand dollars,
(14:32):
So that will be the home run inning the sevening
as we start playing this new season. Well, I know
that he's little bit on the nervous side, certainly understandable,
told him to my left begins his first year of
Major League Baseball broadcasting, and I think is Bill Rigny
gel Dick in the free games where all the rig
(14:53):
Gavis lineup, We'll just join the club because told many
many years ago, if you ever lose that feeling that
you're out of b it's every year, with every opener,
it just seems to build and build and build, because
the excitement is always there. And actually you don't need
anything in the way of so called world's serious flooding
(15:13):
or decoration to bring it about either, because this is
that now, with all of the rigors of spring training
behind us, now to get ready for the stars of
things that are just a good, solid, honest cup for
this point through one hundred and sixty two games. So
did take edfort I got? Should I just say join
the club, We'll have some fun with it tonight. Then
oh see what happens here in nineteen sixty nine. Thank you,
(15:35):
don and good evening everyone, and I just hope the
words arrive in time for the opening pitch. I suppose
there are many pains nesting right now, number to tell
the lifetime ambition to be a Major League baseball player.
I was one of them. Done was one and done.
It's been with baseball, major League Baseball for twenty years.
It's tonight. I'm a thirty four year old rookie and
(15:55):
have to I have to be the most excited man
in the ballpark. This is a dream come true, and
I'm pleased to have the opportunity provided by Genautredy Jim
McLoughlin to pitch for the Angels. Tom Satriano down in
his crouch to give the sign Nestri Shylock to play.
The umpire says play ball. The wind up the pitch
and Tommy Harper lines one fall down the right field line,
(16:16):
and the nineteen sixty nine Angels season is alive. McLoughlin
administers the first heartbeat to the brand new Seattle Pilots.
Tommy Harper, right handed hitter from Cincinnati and then with
the Cleveland Indians last year, batted two seventeen the one
strike pitch high over his head and Harper had to
fall down on his backside to allude the inside pass. Ball,
(16:38):
A ball and a strike to Tommy Harper. You'll be
followed by right fielder Mike Eagan and the left fielder
Tommy Davis. I'd say thanks, are genuinely underway. The second
pitch of the game and Harper sits down A curveball
is high on inside two and one. Defensively for the Angels,
Rodriguez at third Forgosia, short Bobby cannot back on the outfield,
(16:59):
Grass at second extored as the first baseman in the outfield,
right guard and left John Stone and center Boston right
the pitch swung on, grounded sharply inside the back bear
down the left field line. Harper racing around first as
reichardt runs the ball down in the corner, and Harper's
in standing with a leadoff double for the Seattle Pilot
(17:21):
number eight right wheeler. My fan, my This Seattle ball
club as they arrived at Anaheim Stadium tonight, a most
serious group of young men, and they basically are young.
They didn't want a kid. There was no frolicking. They
hardly would give you a hello. They are here to
(17:42):
try to begin a whole new era in the Great
Northwest with a victory. Here's Mike Keegan the top here
in the spring for the Seattle team. Harper at second
the pitch to the left handed batters of fist ball
called strike Dave Distel of the Register here in Orange County.
Tonight's official score going out. Tommy Harper at second base,
(18:05):
top of the first inning. Mike Hegan, whose father played
many years behind the hitter at the with Cleveland, takes
a fastball at the ease Trike two calls. Mike this
spring batted three eighty five to lead the Pilots in hitting.
He scored the most run sixteen, had the most hits thirty,
(18:26):
and knocked in the most runs thirteen. Last year at Syracuse,
batted three to oh four. McLoughlin stares in, gets his
sign working from the belt check second base. The two
pitch on its way down to Hegan her ball inside
one and two Seattle. In the spring one twelve lost
(18:50):
sixteen and defeated the Angels three out of the four
times they met. The Angels broke even winning fourteen and
losing fourteen in the spring. Hegan will try to ground
that ball to the right side and move Harper along
the one two pitch swung on and Luke Fowl behind
home played out of play right into the lower press
(19:12):
box section, and that picks off somebody's glasses and there
they go down the screen. Evidently was an ashtray that
is spinning down the screen. That's a nice little opening
night trick too. You don't see any of those thought
of a flying softer there for a one and two
the Mike Heagan mclough and ready he delivers swung on
(19:35):
long drive the right center field. It's very deep back
to the wall as Johnstone he got well put the
ball Seattle two. The Angel's nothing on a double by Harper,
(20:01):
a home run by Hagan, and the pilots are very
much alive and early and as predicted, and Don, this
has to bring back memories from nine years ago. Let's
ride with a lot of this home run power, and
we may see much more of it than I. Dick Davis,
the hitter, takes a curveball outside. Got a surprise at
Mac didn't day with another breaking ball there. He decided
(20:23):
that he tried enough of my guess and then it
was a perfect guess a game. It came to an
end with Egan guessing. Got to come in with a
fastball here that he did tough hitter Davis three sixty
seven on the spring, slung on crive right up the
middle and into center field. A base it for Davis,
and the pilots have three in a row. And that
one almost took the right kneecap of Jim McLoughlin. What
(20:46):
it is? He drilled it right through the box and
the center field. And here's Don Mitchell and Bill Rigney
out of the Angel dugout with Tom Satriano and Georgetop
Jim and undoubtedly he's asking McLoughlin what's happening. Well, maybe
the heights of the mound has diminished overnight, because so
(21:09):
these pitches by McLoughlin now off the slow slope where
he's getting the ball up. He did there with Davis.
We asked Bill before tonight's game about the height of
the mound and he said it is exactly four inches high.
That is down considerably from the fifteen last year. The
(21:29):
regulation this year is ten inches and for some reason,
in developing the mound area here in Anaheim Stadium, they
measured it. It's four inches high. So basically mclofflin and
all pitchers until that is rectified will be pitching off
the ground, no advantage at all. Don Mincher digs a
(21:49):
toll hold in the batter's box, ring me back in
the dugout. Tommy Davis leads from first base, and Mincher,
who hit two home runs this spring, both against the end, goes, oh,
how he'd love to repeat. Heigans, he swings and drives
one foul down the first baseline as he ripped it
just beyond the bag, and Dick's stewart umpire Lou DeMuro
motioning with both hands so they stands, indicating it was
(22:14):
a foul ball, mister Shylack the homeplate umpire Lou DeMuro
at first, Jerry Neudecker at second, and Jake O'Donnell at
third base. Mincher batted two sixty two in the spring.
One strike pitch on its way inside and buy Satriano
at hit Mincher. It hit Mincher on the right leg
(22:36):
as he tried to skip away from it. So Mincher
gets up slowly and now trots emotions for the trainers
to go back in the dugout. He trots the first base.
The pilot still to make their first out in their history.
(22:57):
Lead to nothing and have Davis at second base and
on Mincha at first base. And here's former Minnesota third
baseman Rich Rellins the pitchure Rollins taken for a strike
at the knee at the Festival. In the National League,
Atlanta defeated the San Francisco Giants for the second night
in a row, ten to two. Felix Millon is a
(23:20):
grand slammer for the Braves. Ernie Banks hit two home
runs to lead the Cubs to a seven to six
win over the Phillies in eleven innings at Wrigley Field.
McLoughlin checks Davis and delivers to Rollins. Swung on fly
ball should be easy for rich Guard. He's back a
couple of steps and to his left and makes the
cash who The throw in from Reichard gets over the
(23:43):
glove of Forghosi, but McLoughlin was backing up to play
at third base. No advance. Davis returns to second Mintua
at first. The Pilots were their first out of flyball
out to left by Rich Rowlands. Here's Jim Gosker, who
hit three sixty five This ring left handed better only
up one hundred and fifty times for Oakland last year.
(24:05):
Bat at one to eighty. The pitch to Basker curve
and the dirt gets away from Satriano but just behind
him and he quickly scoops it back with his glove.
Davis back to second, Minure leads from first one ball
counts to Jim Gosker. The pitch in the side with
a fast ball spinds Gosker away con deck is the
(24:27):
canter Jerry mcnurtney the two ball pitch to Goscar outside
ball three with a fastball and McLoughlin working himself into
quite a jam here in the first inning and Frankie Crossetti,
third base coach and outside ball four a fastball and
Oskar walks to lower the bases. When you get to
(24:48):
that point, I'll look out because sooner or later he's
gonna have to compensate for this. And now you're in
the trouble area. Here's mcnurtney, who with a SOX last year,
batted only two nineteen but against the Angels lifetime a
two to ninety five hitter. He's always been troublesome of tall,
right handed batter, had a good spring, hitting an even
(25:08):
three hundred one out. Bases loaded. The pitch to mcnurtney,
swung online drive over the head of Progosi. It's in
for a base head one run scores minch'er on his
way from third to throw by Reichart to the plate
is high and Mincher slides in with a fourth Seattle run.
(25:30):
Paul mcnurtney delivers with the bases loaded. He did not
hit the ball that hard, but his pump back liner
was over the shortstop for Goosie's head in the short
left field and Seattle on a two run homer by
Hegan and a bassis loaded single by mcnurtney have taken
a four nothing lead, and here it comes Rickney and
he'll be taking the redhead back to the dugout with him.
(26:02):
So young. Jim McLoughlin, who won two games this spring
and had pitched most effectively, can't get through the first
inning on opening night. He allows a leadoff double to
Tommy Harper, a two run home run by Mike Heagan.
Tommy Davis drilled a single to center. He hit Don Minscher,
He got Robin Staffy a left but then walked Jim
(26:23):
Gusker to load the vasis, and Jerry mcnurtney hit the
first pitch in the left field for a two run single,
and at Seattle four, the Angels yet to come to bat.
And I know, Don, this does not surprise you, and
it's surprising the McLoughlin was cuff so hard in the
first inning, But it is not surprising at all for
those of us who saw Seattle this spring to note
the fact that they're just going to hit well all
(26:44):
year long. They're going to be in every ball game,
regardless they're pitching, because they are going to score runs. Now.
The young man, the left hander from Carson Newman in
Tennessee Clins heater right to try to veil out McLoughlin.
Here in the top of the first ending, the pilots
still have runners at second and first leading forward to nothing.
And here's the shortstop ray oiler right handed batter swings
(27:07):
and chops at foul to the Angels. I got Boiler
with the world champion Detroit Tigers last year, and of
course he can field his position as well as any
big leaguer. His hitting has always been questionable, and last
year betted only one thirty five with the Tigers. He
chokes up on the bat right handed hitter, Angels play
(27:27):
him straight away outfield, just to step or two to
the left. Angels said, double play depth in the infield
as right checks back at the runners and the one
strike pitch is low and blocked by Satriano. The runners
trying to advance and Satriano can fight it and both
runners move up ninety feet. The ball scooted just under
(27:51):
the glove of Satriano and came to rest right between
his feet, so when he turned around he still couldn't
see it. He did not know where the ball was,
and by the time he picked it up, both runners
had moved to third and to second. Base that puts
Gostra at third and mcnurtney at second and takes away
the double play possibilities and one pits coming up. Two
(28:12):
oiler is low two and one charge right with a
wild pitch. The pilots laid forward to nothing and threatening
to score more. The left handed right is set. He
rocks into his motion. The pitch taken low ball three,
three and one oiler. The base at first is open.
(28:33):
The pitcher on deck Marty Patten, And for the ex
Angel right hander, it has to be comforting as he
stands in that non deck circle to know that he
starts this game with at least a four run pad
here to watch out for him. Offictively too, he can
swing that stick three to one oiler taken high ball
(28:56):
cord and the bases are loaded again. We paused for
station identification. This is the Angels Baseball Network. This is
Don Reid KMPC News. When the news breaks, KMPC puts
the pieces together. Stay tuned following the game for the
latest news. Los angers ninth man to bat for Seattle
(29:26):
in the first inning, still only one out, bases loaded,
the pilots laid for nothing. The pitcher of Marty with
a chance to add a couple more runs to his total.
The first pitch by right swung online drive down the
right field line. It is hooking fall by five feet, Patton,
this is at least two more runs and maybe three up.
(29:51):
We found that out the few times that Elan Marty
was able to come to bout for the Angels last year.
A little late on the fastball, but he got good
wood on it and set it down the first baseline
and it just did miss that file line by about
five feet. Run his return to their bases and right
(30:12):
serves up the one strike pitch I one and one
slide looks quick tonight. The Angels now.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Would like to come up with their.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Pattent a defensive stopper the double play and Fregosian came
up edging towards second base and playing at double play
depth as right, which is the one one filed back
to the screen and Marty Patton had a good cut
at that one. Take his signature for the Seattle team
to hear. At the beginning of things is the fact
(30:48):
that Joe Schultz as a manager does not like timid hitters.
He doesn't like defensive hitters. We haven't seen the defensive
hitter go up here tonight. We haven't seen a Seattle hitter,
and they've gone through the first nine swing and missipitchia
in the first inning, they've gotten a piece of it
there or foul. The one to two delivery straight three call.
(31:16):
The fastball at the knees gets Marty Patton two away
for the Pilots, and Tommy Harper, hitting for the second
time here in the first inning, he let it off
for the ground ball double down the third baseline. In
the preseason game won by the Pilots fourteen to nine,
(31:38):
they've atted around in two different innings. The pitch from
right swung on shot toward third, Rodriguez back hands it
and gets the horse a third and the Pilots are out.
In the first inning, they score four runs on one two, three,
four hits, no angelurs, and three men left on base.
(32:01):
And of the first half of the first Seattle four
the Angels come to them. Want to play Kent Newport
and True's home Run for the Money. You could win
one thousand dollars or more. Nothing to buy if you're
over twenty one. Send your name and address to home
Run for the Money Box three, Los Angeles, California, nine
oh five to one, along with the bottom flaps from
two packs of Kent Newport True or print the word
(32:23):
Kent Newport or True in playing block letters on two
pieces of free by five paper. That's Box three, Los Angeles, California,
nine oh five to one. A new game every week,
so play every week. Then listen here for your name Void.
We're prohibited.
Speaker 6 (32:39):
Good time, good time for kids, good time, the good
taste of Kent worst good.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
Four and day like today anytime anywhere they you laid
up with Kent and good taste. Happened. The Angels to
(33:15):
head now on the bottom of the first inning against
their former teammate, right hander Marty Patton. Now is twenty
six years old, just last Sunday Easter Sunday. Marty last
year with the Angels, pitching most effectively in the last
half of the year, and he's with a four and
four record, mostly in release, with a two point seventy
nine ERA. He's very happy that with Seattle he's getting
(33:35):
a chance to start. He feels that for his future
lies defensively behind him. Rich Rollins will be a third base,
a short stop. Ray oiler Tommy Harper converted from the
outfield as at second base and Don Mincher at first.
In the outfield, Tommy Davis patrols left in centerfield, Jim
Gotger the end right, Mike Hegan. The verdict thatcheris Jerry
(33:57):
mcnurthay and the Angels to face past the year. In
the first bill Voss, Jim Fragossi, and Jay Johnstone trailing
four to nothing, Voss acquired and they trade with a
white Sox for Sammy Ellis, the leading Angel hitter this
spring four forty four. Patten both hands on his knees,
gets a signed from mcnertney, and Voss steps out. So
(34:18):
Padden on the before even throws the first pitch, gets
involved in a staring down match and that twenty second
rule will be both blind drive cart center racing in
his oscar and he catches it off his knees, so
Voss drives it sharply towards center. Oscar hesitated a moment,
(34:40):
but no boy on his run toward the ball, then
had to get the full speed again and caught the
ball between his knees and ankles. So Voss lines the
center one away for the Angels and Jim Fragossi the
short stuff. Padden ready rocks into his motion and delivers
a straight call a factful and knees over the inside
(35:01):
corner Frago seat, happy that nineteen sixty eight is behind him.
He hit only two forty four chokes up slightly against
the right hander Fatten, who's ready and delivered. Swung on
blind drive to center field, but it's right at Gosker
and he makes the play. So the Angels hit two
(35:23):
shots to center but have nothing to show for it.
And here's the centerfielder, j Johnstone, really Kay Johnstone. Interestingly,
in the first inning, Tommy Harper started it when the
ground ball doubled inside the bag. The ball he hit
to end the inning was exactly in the same place,
(35:44):
hit about as hard, but Rodriguez was playing a little
deeper and a little closer to the line, was able
to backhand it and get the force out. The pitch
to john Stone, swung on drive forward right through into
right field for a single. So john Stone the lines
went on one hop through the hole in the right
deal and the Angels had their first base runner in
(36:06):
nineteen sixty nine. Johnstone on a hitting teer, and that's
why he's in the starting lineup. Size had four hits
him the last dex of boding game Sunday against Oakland.
Rick Reightcart's the cleanup hitter and left fielder who led
the team in home runs in RBI's last year and
in RBIs this spring with nineteen big strong, right handed hitter,
(36:28):
and Patton is ready text the runner in the pitch
rounded toward third and two in on my field. So
john Stone finds the hole the right and right. Cart
grounds the single through the hole the left and the
Angels with two out had two on. The only right
hander from Charles and Illini hasn't exactly pulled anyone as yet,
whether it be the last ball or in this case
(36:49):
the ball in the right card big story and here
six Stewart Well Stewart good make it interesting for Angel
fans in a hurry. With one swing, the big, strong,
right handed hitting first baseman who has won a job
again in the American League. He told me before the
(37:11):
game he has never hit a home run in the
first game of a season, but he said, with a twinkle,
I might start tonight. The pitch, fastball, strike Paul on
the outside corner. The first report from San Diego and
the Astros scored in the first inning lead one nothing
(37:32):
in the top of the second. That's Don Wilson for
Houston against Dick Selma of the Padres john Stone at second,
right card at first, two outs. Bottom of the first,
Seattle leads four nothing, Dick Stewart the hitter, one strike,
the count Harper sneaking in towards second, trying to keep
(37:52):
Johnstone close. Patton checks back and here's the pitch outside
with a slider, and he just smithed one and one.
Hadden in fact, as he saw that Shylock was not
going to call that a strike, and it turned his
head sharply to one side as it to say, it's
like a pretty good pitch. Tommy Davis very deep in
(38:12):
left field, goscor Goscar not around as far as you
might expect in the left center, and way around in
the right center is the right fielder Hegan. The pitch
taken on the corner, strike two calls, good fastball by
Marty Patten. Stewart did not like the call. One ball
(38:34):
and two strikes. The cows Johnston with a walking late
from second base, right eyed, with a big lead at first,
and that Don Mitcher is playing very deep behind him.
One ball, two strikes and hadn't been using the fastball
on Stewart. Here it comes curve outside and just missing
(38:57):
again two and two. Stewart, although he is a power
hitter and most long ball hitters have bad reputations as
far as knowing the strike zone, tend to chase bad pitches.
That is not true with this veteran thirty six year
old former Pittsburgh and Boston star. He knows the strike
(39:18):
zone very well. Two balls, two strikes to Stuart, two
runners on the pits, fowl back into the mezzanine level.
Stewart asks for the pine tar rag a little better
grip on that new Louisville slugger. And my wife came
(39:43):
up with that foul tip from Dick Stewart. How about
that My wife's seated down a level Belowyer in the
press box area, wound up with a baseball. Hey, that'll
make the whole Enburg family happy. I might get her
out here again under those circumstances too, to Stewart, swung on, yes, right. Three.
(40:05):
So for the Angels in the first inning against Patton,
no runs, two hits, no errors, two left at the
end of one at Anaheim Stadium, the pilot's four The Angels.

inning see Adult four The Angels nothing. Clyde Wright will
face Mike Hegan, who've crashed a two run home run
over the right center field boards in the first inning,
then Tommy Davison, Don Mincher, Mike Googan right field. Marvin Milks,
who has always had a great reputation for being able
(41:52):
to select baseball talent, may have made the steal of
the decayed when he picked this young man away from
the Yankee chain checks wing strike, call, a curveball at
an ease. Hegan was bought outright from the Yankee Farm
Club at Syracuse, where he hit three four last year
closed dance left handed hitter. The one strike pitch curved,
(42:15):
chopped fowl back to the screen, zero and two. The
Seattle uniforms are powder blue. The road uniforms powder blue
with dark blue and yellow trimming Seattle emblazoned across the
(42:36):
front of the jersey. The old two pitches downstairs with
a fastball one and two, the yes on the hat
and a lot of gold braid around the hat. They're alive.
The uniforms are very much alive in color. The pitch
(42:58):
strike three. Call the slider on the corner, so Clyde
Wright gets his second strikeout Hegan caught looking. Here's Tommy Davis.
Davis singled sharply up the middle, and I believe his
drive against Jim McLoughlin rattled the young right hander as
(43:20):
much as the home run that had preceded Davis by
Hegan in that first inning, a double by Harper, home
run by Hegan Seattle to nothing. Then Davis singles venture
hit by a pitch, Oskar walk and mcnirkney single basketball
on the corner, strike one to Tommy d That's where
McLoughlin exited. Ray Eyler then walked the first man, a Clyde,
(43:44):
right face, and he struck out Patent and got Harper
to ground. A third Davis swingson, sends a drive toward right,
racing back his boss. He's near the warning track and
makes the play. So Davis shoots a line drive to
deep right field. Voss makes the catches the addle with
two way. And here's Don Mincher, who scored the fourth
(44:05):
Seattle run in the first inning after being hit by
a pitch. You talk about convenience, well, Continental Airlines has
seven convenient, NonStop Golden Fan jets from LA to Chicago
every day. The pitch from right chop towards second on
two big hops to canop and it's an easy play
(44:25):
for the Golden Gloves second baseman and the pilots are
out in order in the second inning, no runs, no hits,
no errors, and after an inning and a half, an
Anaheim Stadium Pilot's four angels nothing. Last year, four million
peoples toured Anheuser Busch Breweries. They saw the extra time
(44:46):
and care we take in brewing our beer. They saw
the quality ingredients used in brewing Bush. They were told
how the carbonation and Bush is in brew not pumped
in like some other beer. Of all the popular priced beers,
only Bush as in brewed carbonation. Visit our Los Angeles
(45:09):
brewery and let us prove to you what makes Bush
the best popular priced beer in America. After all, four
million Americans can't be wrong. Bottom of the second inning,
the Mayfield trailing Seattle for nothing. Other scores around the
(45:31):
American and National League today and tonight from Oakland, a
report that Dick Green has just had a three run
home run in the Oakland fifth inning. In Oakland, late
Chicago White Sox three to two. It is two too
Pittsburgh and Saint Louis now playing in the thirteenth inning.
This afternoon, Boston beat Baltimore five to four one in
twelve is twelve innings, Kansas City nip Minnesota four three.
(45:53):
He tried over Cleveland sixty two in the National Lake
tonight the Atlanta Braves to feed a San Francisco tenda
to it was the cub seven Philly six and eleven
innings and Willie Smith, the x Angel, hit home run
in the eleventh to win it for the Cubs, and
Montreal defeated the Mets eleven to ten. It's one nothing.
Houston leed San Diego on the second inning. Rodriguez to
(46:14):
face Patent swings line drive single right field over to play.
It is the right fielder Hegan and fires into second base.
Rodriguez with a broken bat single to right field the
third hit off Patent and here's capture Tom Satrian leader
(46:36):
Satan Ramsatriano, and although he has been with the Angels
since their first year in nineteen sixty one, this is
his first start in an opener. Chokes way up on
(46:57):
the bat, left handed hitter Rodriguez with his lead. The
pitching outside ball one with the best ball, so Marty Patten.
Although he's able to lean on a four nothing cushion
has not been pooling the Angel hitters, giving up three
hits and two line drive outs. Going away bottom of
(47:20):
the second Rodriguez at first to pitch to Satriano swung
on drive towards center. Racing in is the center fielder Goscar.
He had to hold up and play it. He throws
the second nut in time, so Satriano jams with an
(47:42):
inside fastball lofted won over second base in the short
center field, and Oscar, racing in, had to hold up
and let him bounce on one hop in front of him. Rodriguez,
gambling that he would not get to it, was able
to scramble into second base before Goskar's throw. So the
Angels with no one in the last of the second
inning have runners at second and first base. And here's
(48:03):
second baseman Bobby Knup glide right the picture the bat
next Seattle infield at double play Depp. They play canop
straight away in the outfield as Patten, working from the stretch,
looks back at Rodriguez and delivers a curve ball at
missus high one and all. Eddie Fisher is now warming
(48:26):
up in the Angel bullpen just in case manager Bill
Rigney would want a pinch hit for Clyde Wright. As
you know, right is the best hitter of the Angel pitchers.
He leans on a bet in the on deck circle.
The one ball deliveredy to come up, swings drive hard
right field. That's hid well, racing part of the connor
(48:47):
is heagen? He reaches out and makes it. Then please, no,
one headed catch and prishes into the wall. He's been
knocked out. No, the ball has been dropped, and here
come the Angel runners. One runners in Rodriguez. Here comes
the run from court to sat Priano. Now we have
two runners a third. Sat Priano goes back to third
to throw the second. We'll get knop Tommy Davis, I
(49:08):
believe him from leftfield made the tag. My, oh my,
what a play is that? And let's see if they
can ever thire this away. As hegan making a sensational
cash catch, crashed into the barrier in right field, totally
out of control. As he crashed into the wall just
after making the catch, the ball fell out of his
(49:29):
love and the indecision on the part of the Angel
base runners was whether or not the ball had been
caught caught or not it had not been caught in
the judgment of the first base umpire Lou de Muro
and Joe Schultz. The Seattle Skipper is out arguing the
point with him right now. As hegan after a long
run deep into the corner at the warning track, reached out.
(49:51):
He's a left handed thrower, back hand of the ball.
His next step carried him right into the barrier. As
you know, from the ball poll to the bullpen a
curve of about thirty feet. It is well padded, and
that padding may have saved Mike higgins baseball career as
he slammed without any means of protecting himself into that
(50:12):
barrier and the recoil effect the whiplash dropped him on
the warning track. The ball fell out of his glove.
The Angels thought the out had been made. No one
was running, and then suddenly, halfheartedly, they all began running.
One run is scored Rodriguez from second base Satriano, who
had held up in the play. Despite the fact that
the man who hit the ball, Knop, was on his heels,
(50:34):
he stopped at third. Knnop was already a third Tommy
Davis alertly came in from left field to help out
the infield, and he made the tag of Cannops trying
to get back to second base. Now the concern centers
near the Seattle bullten where Mikehagan is being hated by
the entire Seattle roster. They're all down their concern with
(50:56):
the health of this right young outfielder. So two Day said,
for Bobby, the Angels pick up a run and the
pilots with a quarter one mart they're making announced. But
now that Bobby Cannop had passed the runner and that
was not the case. Is Tommy Sotrianna was not passed
(51:17):
by Bobby Knop at least I didn't see it. It
may have, we're so concerned with Higan. It may have
occurred earlier, however, as they made the turnaround second base,
because quite often when people say that they have seen
everything out here, you're so concerned with what happens in
the case of Hegan and watching port amro sign that
you're not really conscious of what's happening out of the
bases until all this plutter starts, And that may have
(51:39):
occurred as they rounded second base. Bobby may have just
gone a half stride past Tommy Soriano and then Tommy
started to pick up speed once again, so it's a
run end now they've flashed single on the board. They
had to double up there earlier. We'll just have to
wait the official score to completely make up his mind
as to how has got to be called the pilot's
(52:02):
laid cut to three. Well, Young Mike Heagan has been
replaced by Steve Whittaker and right field Whittaker jogging onto
that position now and Hegan assisted from the right field
corner into the seattle dugout behind first base and being
held by both arms the way two trainers might assist
a fighter who has just been knocked out back to
(52:24):
the dressing room. He was very wobbly, but he appeared
at least as he was able to leave under his
own power with the assistance of two fellow players. He
appeared not to be seriously injured, and we're so pleased
to report that as Mike Heagan crashes making a brilliant
catch into the barrier in the right field corner, and
(52:44):
as the dust clears, Hegan appears to be all right,
although he's out of the game, replaced by Steve Whittaker.
The Angels score one run. You credit Bobby Kannopp with
a single and an RBI. Tom Satriano is at third base.
Kannop is out for having Pat sat Trianno on the
bases as Sach undoubtedly as was the case with all
(53:05):
of us in a frozen action, wondering if Hegan was
seriously injured after that vicious collision. Evidently knop as he
round it first, ran right by sat Friano, the mate
Steve Whitaker. Whittaker in right field and the Angels will
use the pin shutter here for Clyde Wright. It's Vic Davillo.
(53:25):
Davillio the bat for Clyde Wright with one out and
Tom Satriano at third base. Angels would like to check
in that run. Treli war to one last of the second,
ending to pitch high and end sign to Davillio and
Vic Casteleene on his right hand to get out of
the way is buzzing him inside with a fastball. Is
the right hander Patent the pitching coach for the Seattle Pilots,
(53:50):
a man rather notorious for some knockdown pitches. Sal the
Barbara Magley Davilie. Already here's the one ball pitch, look
toward left field and hooking down the line. Davis is
there to make the catch and file territory Satriani late
back to the bag and he'll not be able to
advance as Davis's throat comes in and Tommy has a
(54:11):
bad throwing arm. Satriano coming down the line. I attempted
to race back to third, but Davis had already caught
the ball by the time SAT's got there. And that's
a way any possibility of tagging up and scoring. Bill
with abio flies to Tommy Davis in foul territory in
left field. That was just medium depth file territory. But
(54:38):
Davis has a bad throwing arm. Here's Bill Voss, who
lined the center field for the first out in the
first inning. Left handed hit or to face Patten. The
pitch is a curveball high Angels with one run in
two outs, Tom Satriano at third base, the Angels with
five hits in the first two innings against the pitcher
(54:58):
Maudy Patten, but trail by three pat and ready. The
one ball pitch fly ball to left field, slice in
the file territory incomes Davis out, goes Oiler. It's Davis
at the line to make the catch in fair territory,
and the Angels are out. On the second inning, they
get one run on three hits, no errors, and leave one.
(55:20):
They've stranded three, and after two full innings of play
here at Anaheim Stadium, it's the Pilot's four and the
Angels one.
Speaker 7 (55:27):
Hi, everybody, this is John Miley with a score four
to one Seattle at the end of two. We are
going to miss some action before we go back to
Los Angeles and dick Enberg. Fortunately, the portion we have
missing from our collection is a rather bland part of
this historic game. Unless you are a parent of one
of the players or one of the players themselves, I
(55:50):
will do my best to piece it together for you
so you will know what you actually missed in these
innings that we are missing. We are missing all of
inning three, in all of n in my opinion, nothing
exciting happened in either of those two innings. We also
missed the first two batters of the fifth. We only
actually miss one base hit in that little over two
(56:11):
innings that were missing, and three walks. Nobody got past
second base and nobody came even close to scoring, so
we're missing no scoring. This was a very historic year
nineteen sixty nine. In that it was the beginning of
divisional play. Also, both leagues took on two new teams.
(56:32):
Montreal and San Diego debuted in the National League, and
Seattle and Kansas City debuted in the America League. Seattle,
named the Pilots, not the Mariners, came on board for
only one year that so all they lasted was just
one year. So you are not only hearing the first
opener that they ever had, but you're also hearing their
(56:55):
last since they didn't play after nineteen sixty nine was
until nineteen seventy seven Seattle came back into the American League,
and they did so as the Mariners. So let's now
go to what we are missing. As I promised you,
I would tell you the Pilots. In the third inning,
with Eddie Gene Fisher pitching for the Los Angeles Angels,
(57:19):
he got the side out one, two, three, Rich Rollins
grounded out from Rodriguez, the third baseman, to the first
baseman Stewart. Jim Gosker grounded out from Fregosi the shortstop
to the first baseman Dick Stewart, and Jerry mcinherney popped
out to shortstop Forgosi in short left field, three up,
three down, score still four to one in favor of
(57:43):
Seattle going into the bottom half of the third. In
the bottom half of the third, the Angels Jim Fragosi
grounded out from Tommy Harper to Mincher.
Speaker 2 (57:53):
Second to first.
Speaker 7 (57:54):
Jay Johnstone grounded out first baseman Mincher unassisted, and rich
reichardt singled into right field. Pitcher Marty Patten then walked
Dick Stewart and Rykert moved up to second base. So
now the Angels had the time run at the plate
in the presence of Rodriguez. Rodriguez stood up the plate
and took three strikes and that was it for the
(58:17):
Angels in the third inning, score still four to one
after three the pilots. In the fourth inning, Kyler grounded
out first basement unassisted, first baseman being Dick Stuart. Marty Patten,
the pitcher grounded out second base to first, Connop to Stuart.
Tommy Harper walked, Steve Whittaker grounded out second base to first,
(58:37):
Connop to Stuart, and the score was still four to
one at the end of three and a half innings.
At the bottom of the fourth in the Angels fourth
Patten walked tom Satriano, Bobby cannopp grounded into a double
play rollins to Harper Dementia third to second to first,
and there were two out and nobody on. Fisher struck
(58:58):
out and the score was still four to one.
Speaker 5 (59:00):
At the end of four innings.
Speaker 7 (59:04):
In the Seattle fifth fitting, Tommy Davis flew out to
centerfielder Jay Johnstone and Mincher popped out to Rodriguez at
third base in foul territory, and we're right up to date.
So now let's go back to Los Angeles and dick
Enberg because he's giving scores. In the top half of
(59:24):
the fifth inning with a score four to one in
favor of Seattle.
Speaker 2 (59:28):
Kansas City defeated Minnesota and extra innings four to three.
The Pilots lead here four to one in the fifth inning,
and the Padres are tied one to one. In San Diego.
Knuckleball is low thanks to Bob Speck, the director of
sports programming at KTLA Television here in Los Angeles, our
outlet for angel telecasts, who says, please extend our good
(59:50):
wishes to Don Wells. We're delighted to have you both
with us, and hope the association will be a long
and happy one. Thank you Robert, and our thanks also
to Alan Rich for is words in his syndicated newspaper
Colum Knuckler missus ball two because where is Bob Speck?
Would and send those wires collect though it's always a
(01:00:12):
bother three?
Speaker 7 (01:00:14):
Is that?
Speaker 2 (01:00:14):
What that means? The big Sea is her coleg two
and out of Rich Rollins with two way knuckleball misses inside,
three and oh, so Fisher will have to come in
with something more palatable for the hitter. And on three
and oh, Rollins looks hopefully down at his third base
coach Frankie Corsetti on deck centerfielder Jim Gusker. Fisher wines
(01:00:41):
and delivers backball right down the middle of the knees
three and one. Now Rollins looks at Crossetti and with
a three run lead and two away, Rollins may be
able to take a crack at this one. Fisher quickly
back to the plate inside with a knuckleball ball four.
That's a second walk given up by Eddie Fisher. And
(01:01:02):
with two away in the pilot fifth inning, here's Jim Gosker.
He's over for one. He's walked in the first inning
and grounded the Fregosi, I made a fine play behind
second base. Coscar, a left handed batter. Speaking of Fregosi,
he was involved in a one of a humorous incident,
(01:01:23):
and I will relate that to you in a moment.
Swung on and missed one handed swing by Oscar as
the knuckleball glittered and floated outside. Fregosi worrying his new
Angel uniform. All the uniforms new tonight, including the news socks.
Of course, new caps is the Angel. Start out press
as all ball clubs do on opening night. Here's the
(01:01:45):
one strike pitch. The runner breaks, Rollins, It's off the
glove of Satriano. Rollins round second. He's going to try
it for third. Sacrano scrambles, throws the third to slide.
He's a head first, goes Rich Rollins as he was
stealing second base of credit Rollins with a steal a second.
He goes to third on the pass ball as the
(01:02:07):
knuckleball got away from Tom Satriano. Very difficult play for
the catcher. He sees the runner breaking, so he's jumping
out of his crouch to make the catch. In the
throw and the tendency, of course, is to take your
eye off the knuckleball, and any catcher will tell you
you just can't do that, or you'll have a pass ball.
(01:02:28):
The pitch the Goskar swung on and missed, and the
pilots aren't out. In the fifth minuting as Godskar goes
down swinging, Fisher records his first strikeout. So in the
fifth or Seattle, no runs, no hits, no irs in
one left. They've now stranded five and at the halfway
mark in Anaheim Stadium, the store remains, the pilots fuller.
(01:02:50):
In the Angels, one say a big D that smells
ady and capital letters that you can add fun to

(01:04:20):
the Angel fifth inning, the Angels trail by three. The
pitch frum patent bunt try foul toward the Angel dugout
as Boss, who was an excellent bunter, tried to drop
the ball down the third baseline. Rich Rollins, playing him deep,
was in on the grass as he made his move,
noting the short shortened stands vibe Boss one strike to

a sign from ketcher mcnurtney the one strike delivery inside
with a slighter one and one Fregosion in the on
deck circle, continuing the story. After batting practice, looked at

his new uniform and on the front of it it
was a n G E ls law in the dirt
for a ball the vs. Two and one, So that
brought a chuckle from all the people around the batting cage.
Here was the Angels angle angle Forgosi, a n G.
(01:05:27):
L Ees. He says it's going to be some year.
He's gone in and he has a new one on.
Now it's the correct spelling. Two one Devas grounds it sharply,
but right at Mencher, who charges the ball and will
make the play himself, gets the out at first base.

now and has worked well the last two innings, plus
(01:06:09):
the pitch fastball at the knees for a call strike.
It was a day of misspelling for Fregosi. We sat
next to him at a luncheon here in Anaheim Stadium
this noon and his name card was spelled Jim Fergosi

the line, menure charging out in file territory toward the stands.
It'll drop in the stands in the second row, Beyona

(01:07:02):
of the ninth inning at the Oakland Coliseum with a
score of the A's five. Chicago two. Fegossi over two,
lined the center and grounded the second. Angels had Patten
on the ropes in the first three innings, but only
(01:07:23):
came up with the one run that in the second
inning when Cannop's fly ball deep the right field was
caught by Egan, who crashed into the wall and dropped
it the pitch I with a slider two and two
in that inning. Rodriguez led off in the second with
a line drive to right. Satriano looped a single to center,
and with two on and no one out, Cannop hit
(01:07:46):
the drive to right field that confused everyone, including the
base runners, and cannot passed Satriano and was out on
the play inside ball three. So for Gussie works the
count of three and two. Rodriguez scored on the play
for the only Satriano moved a third, but Cannop was
out for passing the runner. Angels failed to get Satriano
(01:08:06):
in from third with one away, and so the score
remained four to one. The pilot's on a two run
home run by the injured Mike Hegan was not then,
of course, in the first inning and two more on
a faces loaded single, Fregosie swings and it's a high
foul fly that is bending towards the sand and will
fall beyond the Angel dug out and kangaroos back toward
(01:08:27):
the terrace boxes, and now the scramble as it comes
to rest under someone's seat. Cod remains three and two
to Jim Fragosi in that at first inning against McLaughlin,
Harper led off with a double Heagan homer to make
it to nothing in a hurry. Then Davis singled sharply
at the center Menscher was hit by a pitch. Gosker
walked to load the bases, and mcnertney singled the left
(01:08:49):
to knock in the final two runs for the pilots.
They led for nothing, and McLaughlin, with only one out
in the first inning, was removed for relief pitcher Clyde Wright.
Since then Wright and Eddie Fisher had dead things in control.
Three to two. Delivery swung on fouled them the same
spot a little farther back. This one may catch the
mezzanine level, and does in the second row, and it
too bounds way into the back level of the seats

good ones. Cat remains three and two. Danny McLain a
three hitter today as he goes the distance. Tigers beat
Cleveland sixty two. The pitch swung a long drive to
left field. It's deep, very deep, dams back to the barrier.
Frigoti puts them on. Jim Fregosi's home run, the first

the pitch to Johnstone. Curveball is high and Paton could
be tiring. He has worked a long four innings plus,
allowing now seven hits and the two runs. Johnstone one

racing out as Harper, the second basemen he's there, waves
off the outfielders and makes the catch two a way

at one thousand dollars. We already have one winner, as
Pergosi kisses one for hazel Stein, worth one thousand, and
(01:12:18):
that is now being announced on the Big A message board.
Hazel Stein you're lights at Anaheim, swinging weekly and missing
his Reich guard at the slider two away in the

Aurelio Rodriguez would be the next Angel hitter. Here's Big

the Tayo Yales in Japan and now has won himself
another major league contract in the new look American leg

Ethony's a spike a good slider. Maddan has been able
to find home played with that slider to compliment his fastball.
(01:13:51):
He's thrown very few big Kurve balls. Segie working quickly.
Now he gets warm down the right field. The one
strike pitch to Stewart swung on a miss right two,
and Stewart was full on an outside fastball. He did
not have a good swing, So Patton jumps ahead of
the Angel first basement on two. Rick Reichardt with the

at first base. The Angels trail four to two, although
the pilots have half the Angel hits four from the belt.
Here's the pitch Swington's and missiles strike three. Marty Patten
has his wars drake out the second time he's gotten stored.
(01:14:35):
So for the Angels in the fifth inning, they get
one run on two hits Nowher's and leave wooing and
with one winner one thousand dollars going to Hazel sign

and one of the nine innings tomorrow night against the

it's your name, and that angel hits a home run,

Top of the sixth inning, and Eddie Fisher is warming up,
the catcher Tom Satriano Satriani throws through the second base
in the antel is working around the infield, or the
Seattle Pilots who lead four to two in the top
of the sixth inning, Facer Fisher, it'll be the catcher
mcnurtney and the bottom third of the order Ray Oiler,
and the pitcher Marty Patten. Segee has stopped warming up,
(01:16:32):
so evidently Patton will hit for himself. Fisher, now in
his fourth inning and relief has been outstanding. His first
pitch to mcnurtney is a knuckler in at the knees
for a strike. Eddie came in on the top of
the third inning, got the Pilots out in order in
the third, walked one man in the fourth inning, and
walked another in the fifth. That's not allowed to hit
(01:16:54):
knuckler in again. Strike two to mcnurtney, who if responsible
for the Seattle lead. Right now, with a score to
nothing in the first inning, after Mike Hegan had homered
over the right field fence, mcnurtney singled with the bases
loaded to left field to give the Pilots two more
and a four nothing leads swung on and just nipped

mcnurtney mc nurtnaedia with the Chicago White Sox handsome young man.
The two pitch swung on and missed strike three as
he chased the knuckleball downstairs. Second strikeout for Fisher. He
(01:17:37):
got Goscard in the fifth inning, one away. Here's Ray Oiler,
the shortstop he walked in the first was out unassisted
to the first baseman Dick Stewart in the fourth inning. Finals,
going from Oakland, the A's have defeated the Chicago White
Sox five to two. John Blue muhman Otum catched a
three hitter at the White Sox five nine and oero

for the A's and two for Chicago. The loser was
Peters first pitch toiler knuckleballs high ball one. They had
twenty three thousand, six hundred and ten at Oakland tonight.
The pitch toiler popped on the infield right over the
pitcher's mound. Rodriguez comes down from third makes the catch

for station identification. This is the Angels Baseball Network. This
is Henry Travis k MPC News. Take a noon time
break and catch up on the world around you the

Marty Patten will swing from the right side, Marty to Night,
struck out and grounded the short pretty good hitter the

Padres Atlanta, the first major league team with two victories.
Round Ball up the middle over second base hits. The
volume goes up a center field and Marty Patton has
the first hit all Betty Fisher with two away in
the sixth inning, and that's the first hit for the
Pilots since the looping single to left by Jerry mcnurtney
with the bases loaded and one out in the first inning.
(01:19:24):
Rude May Rudy May swarming up down the Angel bullpen.
In fourteen innings, Pittsburgh defeated Saint Louis six to two.
To night, it was seven to six the Cubs over
the Phillies. In eleven, Bernie Banks hit two home runs
(01:19:45):
to lead Chicago and Montreal defeated the Mets eleven to
ten in New York. To pitch the Harper bun try
and he's motioning that he was hit, but he was, oh,
he'll be called back. He was trying to bunt. And
if your hit while trying to hit the ball, it's
still a strike. If you swing and missed the ball
and the ball hits you in the middle of the chest,
it's still one strike. You don't go to first base
(01:20:07):
if you're trying to hit the ball. And Harper was
running up on the knuckleball trying to bunt it, and
it hit him in the hand. But he was trying
to bunt, and Estra Shylock that played up our immediately
raised his hand and said that strike one. Come on
back and hits more. Harper shaking his right hand as
he was bitten by that knuckleball, and of course pinched
(01:20:29):
his hand against the bat. So it's one strike to Harper.
Had he not been trying to bunt, then he would
have been on first base. Marty Patten returns to first,
held on by Dick Stewart, one strength to count to
Tommy Harper. Harper started the game with the ground double
the left and then in the same inning, as the
Pilot's batted around, he grounded a third baseman, Rodriguez, who
(01:20:52):
got the force at third base. He walked in the
fourth inning the one strike pitch from Fisher low one
on one. So quite an opening day. A lot of
close ball games, a lot of extra ding ball games,
and the piers from the scores. On his first day,
the hitters had a pretty good time. Knuckleball misses two
(01:21:14):
and one Dodgers. Of course that schedule. They'll play the
Reds again in Crosley Field tomorrow. I hope you will
join us tomorrow night. The pilots again with Mike Marshall
facing the Angels. Andy Messersmith. Here at the Big A.
Here's the two one pitch to Tommy Harper, knuckleball inside
off the golf of Satriano and Patton. Ball moved to
(01:21:36):
second base. Satriano back to the warning track behind all plate,
throws the ball to Fisher, who had camult the mound
toward an old play. So Patton moves into scoring position.
There was a knuckleball got away from tom Satriano a
pass ball on Satriano, who is suffering the agony that
(01:21:59):
all catch you must face when having to handle the
knuckleball pitcher Gus Friandos when he was with the Baltimore

he knew that Wilhelm was coming in three to one
to harper the pitt swung on little fly ball in
(01:22:20):
the infield. It'll be Rodriguez again in on the grass
and makes the cash. So more of the pilots in
the sixth inning, no runs, one hit, no errors, and
one left. Marty Patton left on the bases, so he
didn't get much rest this. The Angels come up in
the bottom of the sixth The score Seattle four, Angels two.

Marty Patton took a moment ago mentioned Gus Freande's when

he used to Cratchfoid Wilhelm of the Orioles. He is
the only catcher kel ever Evernona who tried to commit

He was such a lovable and still is such a
lovable guy. But he would come to the ballpark number one.
He disliked memorials to him in Baltimore because of its

tremendous dimensions, and even with all of his part was
a great challenge for and Rihanna's though he hit some
of the longest known rests ever seen of that part.
But at the same time he think, oh boy, here
we go, perhaps again tonight, I'll have to work on
the receiving end of that guy. And it would really
gall him.
Speaker 3 (01:24:29):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (01:24:29):
He was an unhappy soul, and he tried to I
think one time he tried to hang him as all
he was a traitor to court hercy between innings. And
of course that was before Paul Richards decided to come
up with that big pillow glove. He had to work
a couple of years with just the normal sized catcher's glove.
(01:24:51):
Rodriguez leads off the Angel sixth inning and takes the
slider outside ball one, Angels trying to carve away at
that Seattle leadade that has stood since the top of

and Sunday. It'll be Brunette on Friday night, Rudy May
Saturday night, and Tom Murphy on Sunday against the Twins.
Here's the two to one pitch way outside three and one,
and Patton appears to be struggling a bit, a little
(01:25:55):
angry at himself. I hope he takes a short walk
in back of the mound on his hips, now turns
toward home plate. Six is his camp, both feet on
the rubber. Gets a sign from mcnurtney three one to Rodriguez,
take him inside, ball four, walk the leadoff man sin
(01:26:20):
of all pitchers, and Joel Schultz does not like the
way Patton is pitching. And he's bounded out of a
Seattle dugout and it is just not crossing the first
baseline as he walks toward the mount along with his
catcher Jerry mcnurtney and the shortstop Rey Oiler also comes in,
so Patten maybe removed here as Agee throwing hard down
(01:26:41):
in the Seattle bullpen. Schultz asking m Dout to leave
Patten how he feels, but he doesn't seem very concerned
about the answer. He's looking instead toward the bullpen and
now motions. He wants a new releaf pitcher, so that'll
be all for Marty Patten, the ex angel. Patten works
my innings plus us is responsible for a Rodriguez. He
(01:27:04):
allowed two runs, both earned a total of eight hitits.
Marty with a walk to lead out this inning, gave
up three walks and he struck out four. So Patton
will leave the game. He is the pitcher of record,
cannot lose and could win his first outing in the

thirty fans paid at Anaheim Stadium there with more than
thirteen thousand in the ballpark eleven thousand, nine zero to
(01:27:51):
see the Pilot's debut in the American League coming in
from the bullpen and then bouncement they made now thee Hey,
would you like a winning combination, Well, here's one that's
mighty difficult with chime. For six dollars, you can get
a combination of a reserve seat for the game against
the Twins this Sunday and an unlimited fun ticket to Disneyland.
(01:28:14):
Go it from four tom to midnight. The hand is
for patent around at Disneyland Angel doubleheader this Sunday. Tickets
aren't available, and I understand from Dick Foster, the Angel
ticket manager, that they've been moving very rapidly this week.
(01:28:37):
So why don't you be a part of the Actually
expect to crowd the twenty to thirty thousand on Sunday,
and we'd like to have you along not only for
the ball game, but all of fun at Disneyland from
four until midnight, and we'll feature of the AMPC Ragtag van.
You've got a chance to meet the Angel personalities as well.
At eight o'clock get together on the Disneyland gravit Anny
(01:28:58):
Ryan as many times as you want to ride on
it as the park is closed to the general public,
and you have your own way with a ticket for
six dollars or reserve seat seven dollars if you would
like a box seat for the ballgames that Sunday Disneyland doubleheader.
Diego Sighee s e g u I effective as one
(01:29:24):
of the minor literachers with the Oakland Athletics, and he,
along with former Athletic bullpend star Jack Aker, considered to
be one of the best one to two combinations in
the pen in the American League. And Joe Schultz, the
manager of the Pilot's, figures that he will lean very
(01:29:45):
heavily upon those two right arms Sagee and Acre. He
considers that one of his team's top strings. He recognizes
that his starting rotation is young and unproven in many instances,
patent being in case in point, so he'll often figure
ongoing five six sets with a starter and then hope
that that satter can leave with the lead and then
(01:30:08):
call upon Acre and Segee Rodriguez at first base with
the walk, the Angels have the tying run at the
plate and Tom Satriano the batter. Satch is one for
one single to center and walked. Segie ball in the
glove gets a sign now stretches from the belt, checks
the runner at first and here's the pit swung on
lines right right there, that's out on the line. Around
(01:30:31):
second goes Rodriguez. End of the corner goes to right
deelther Whittaker. On a long single by Satriana, Rodriguez will
hold a third base last yielding by Steve Whittaker, who
was able to get to the ball before it gets
the undeald barrier and his strong throat a second base
(01:30:56):
held Satriano at first. Rodriguez around the third easily no man.
Bobby cannot. The hitter Sandriano greeting mister Segee rather road ly,
so the time run san Friano at first base the
potential go ahead run Bobby cannot. The hitter cannot singled
in a rhyme. On the second inning, it with his
(01:31:17):
long fly ball that was speared by Mike Eagan and
he Can then passed into the barrier and had to
leave the game with a sprained wrists and bruise hip.
The ball fell out of his love for a single
to knock in the run. Cannot then bounced into a
double play in the fourth inning, after san Friano had
walked the lead off winner Tinker lead because they cannot
bowl back on the screen, so the Angels have nine
(01:31:40):
base hits off Seattle pitching, but frail four to two.
And here they'd gone first ball hunting two against Segie,
which is no doubt in watching him warm up with
this idea of money. Tommy Sapriano first pitch for the
base hit, and Bobby Cannop going after the breaking ball,
trying for the same thing, trying to get back against
Sagi too, because he owned six lifetime wins over the Angels.
(01:32:01):
One strike to Canop, who checks his swing on a
high fastball, one and one diegle Pamplo Segee, now thirty
years old, six feet tall, one eighty Cuban born, one ball,
(01:32:21):
one strike the gun to Babi Canop Rodriguez away from third,
Satriano from first, The pitch swung on and a five
ball toward right. It's down the line and slicing toward
the stands, racing over as Whittaker. He leans in but
can't get to it. Whitaker, jumping on top of the
tar poland and trying to reach in it landed just
in the first row, and Cannop's spot was well chosen.
(01:32:44):
Had that ball been hit a little farther than Whittaker,
would have had to play, but a tarpolan actually served
as a barrier, keeping Whittaker away from the ball. Jack
Acre and John Morris, acer right hander. Morris a left
hander warming up. Now for Seattle, here's the pitch swung
on a miss three. I changed my Sagie and he

A repose in the infield work and batting practice tonight

(01:35:46):
following a walk to Rodriguez allows a single by Satriano,
and here's the one. Two pits swung on a miss
right three and sage in the clutch after giving up
the single to Satriano has recorded back to backs than
out says he knocks down ken up and repose, and
here's Bill Voss. Voss looking for his first tip. Great
(01:36:08):
deal over three line the center group, fly ball to
left field and grounded unassisted to the first baseman Don
Mincher and Voss, who delivered so many times in the
clutch the spring to win an Angel contract has asked
to try to check in at least one run. Here
in the Angel sixth inning, two away, now runners at
(01:36:29):
the corners Saginia odds yes to the sign by mcnurtney,
and here's the pitch Boss takes inside it gets away
from mcnurtney. What they say, foul ball, Yes, Nest Shenlock,
motioning that the Bault had tipped the bat of Voss
as it calmed high in the air out in front
of home play. So one strike to Voss. So not
(01:36:52):
only are the Angels not making contact with Segee, but
they're not getting good swimmings. Can up and repose both
to a healthy swing as they were fooled by the
pitching slants of Diego, Sage and Boss. Here on a
check swing as one strike, Angels trail four to the pitch,
ins at one and one. A fastball at the letters
(01:37:19):
Marty Patten five innings plus allowed two runs and eight hits. Segi,
after giving up a hit on his first pitch to Santriano,
has struck out canop and repose runners get their lead.
Here's the pitch swung on fly ball to center field,
but it's play a ball waiting there and Hauling is
(01:37:41):
the center field or gutsker and he makes the catch.
So quite a bit of pitching by Diego Segee, with
knowing out and runners at third and first, he gets
the Angels on without scoring. The Angels no roads, one,
no air as they strand too, and no state runners
in the ballgames after second office Seattle four the angel
(01:38:03):
bill ever hear of the losers in a pro game
getting more money than the winners. It happened in the
First World Series nineteen oh three. Pittsburgh owner Barney Dreypus
turned his share back into the player's pool. It came
to one hundred and thirty four dollars more per man
than the Boston winners got. Now what you may ask,
does that have to do with Bush, the genial host
(01:38:24):
of this time period. Well, how about something like everybody
comes up a winner when he calls for Bush best
popular priced beer in America? In Bush best popular priced
(01:38:53):
beer in America, have a glass, or visit our Los
Angeles by and we will prove it. And I'm steady
amount opening night they had got out of nearly twelve thousand.
(01:39:18):
I've watched the Seattle pilots score four times when the
top of the first inning and hang on to that
lead for to two top of the seventh. Now, and
the new Angel pitcher is left hander Rudy May, who
won four ball games in the spring, most by any
Angel pitchers. So the young last hander, once up with
a big club, then armed Trouble, went down to the minors.
Slipper Guns has returned to the big league the angles
(01:39:39):
and figures very prominently in this nineteen two nine season.
Roger Ripo has moved into right field, replacing Bill Voss.
And we'll hey the end the pitcher's spot and May
then now go into the ballgame. Is playing in the
top spot in the betting order, the number one spot,
all said, top of the seventh, and here again is done.
Who you may one of the Angels in the departments
(01:40:01):
where they have had their problems end to night and
the second inning to have a man at third and
in less than the chance right then top tho a
score run that would have whittled away in the lane.
They picked up one run in the second, but they
missed the second run and for the Angels, and the
ending just completed the same story. So instead of a
tied up game, the Pilots lead the Angels four to two.
(01:40:22):
Rudy May's fastball in for a strike to Steve Whittaker
and its own one. So a couple of missed opportunities
for the Californians tonight the end of seven innings to
San Diego. It's San Diego two and Houston one. May
have fast worker in the one strike pitch fastball higher
inside down of the dirkiose Whittaker ball one and strike one.
Whittaker has been up one time in the ball game three,
(01:40:49):
coming into the lineup to replace the starter in right
field Vegan. They just cut on the pole as will
work out of place. All one in strike two, so
Rudy Maaming comes the fourth. Angels pitcher Jim mcglothin set
(01:41:10):
of it off, worked only a third of an inning,
gave up four hits, four runs, no strikeouts, and walk one.
Clyde Wright worked in ning him two thirds, struck out two,
walk one, no hits one two pitch almost had him
a little bit inside the counters two and two. Eddie
Fisher then worked four innings, allowed only one hit, struck
out too, and walked to Payer. And we're in the
(01:41:32):
seventh dive of the Pilot's leading at four to two.
Seattle with five hits, the Angels would matage nine. May
set up again in the two two delivery tiss ball
cut on and that's pustrike three, so we Aker right
over the top of this, and Rudy has his first
strike out. The battery will be Tommy Davis. Tommy with
a single and a run scored in the permya Clyde
(01:41:54):
deep right field in the second and flide deep into
center field in the fifth. Left hander May fires away again,
Curve Beauty stykelad Well. The relay pitchers, it's almost like
(01:42:16):
working with a machine with right pusher and now the
way Rudy May has started off things here on the
seventh Innay serve me been a machine like proposition. The
one strike offering now to Davis, fastball and he shoves
it fall down the first base side, about five feet
outside of the line to kund of strike two. So
(01:42:36):
Rudy working rapidly and just as quickly jumping out ahead
of the hitters, going ahead of Winaker, not Tommy Davis.
Davis will be followed by Don Mincher. The two strike
pitch checked Don a fastball took it high one and two,
(01:43:01):
so May we'll try it all over again. Winde up
and the one two pitch change hare turn one over,
throw it outside two and two already after's steaming a
(01:43:21):
couple of pitches in there to Tommy Davis not trying
to change speeds on him. Had he been able to
throw it somewhere near the strike zone, it might have
been an effective pitch. It was about six inches outside
two two delivery fastball pounded foul up on the screen.
Just tried to buzz it by him, and the count
stays at two and two. Davis has gone for distance tonight,
(01:43:41):
but he's one for three. The next pitch ground fall
up the first pace side its fall and blocked by
Dick Stewart charging across the line two and two. I
imagine that as the season progresses, that little Stewart section
(01:44:03):
will develop in the seats in the Laura decks around
first base, as was the case at Sunway Park in Boston.
Calling at Stuart's private section fastball kind on miss Psy three.
But Tommy Nave has just collapsed at home, played with
the lilas of his swing and trying to find this
one he's seeking fastball by Rudy May had a pair
(01:44:23):
of strikeouts here in the seventh Nay. Now Don venture
steps on the you're listening to.
Speaker 9 (01:44:30):
The Angel Seattle Pilot game of April the eighth, nineteen
sixty nine, the night dick Enberg made his debut as
a Major league baseball announcer here on Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:44:41):
Seven to ten k in PC. Okay, let's get back
to baseball.
Speaker 9 (01:44:45):
We fit things up now with Don Wells as the
Angels come to that in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Speaker 2 (01:44:50):
Seattle leads at four to two. Stretch half of the
seventh inning. Let's see what happens now. Jim Fergussi steps
face Diego Segie better George up. The adult bundle came
(01:45:12):
in the first sting when they picked up four runs.
The Angels have been trying to got away at it
ever since, running the second one and the fifth and
a couple of missed opportunities for Gussie, who homered in
the fifth steps in Diego Segee and the line up,
the elaborate wind up, the fetch ground ball up, the
metal going for toiler, shuts up, hazard fires gets in
by ten fo seventh one down. Let's pause right now
(01:45:35):
for station nightdentification. This is the Angels Baseball Network. Stay
tuned following to night Angels game for me, Johnny Magnus,
I have selected is on exciting music and I've got
the weather with the beat. Stay tuned to CA Yeah.
(01:45:55):
Johnstone gets a chance here in the last half of
the seventh against the right header the egg Segi Jay
had a baseheat in the first thing, and since Santa's
grounded out and also popped out, Diego works to the plate,
curved Day ran up on it, took it law and
outside ball wae San Diego with a two to one
(01:46:18):
lead over Houston at the end of eight. There are
game to night at San Diego, Quart trying to continue
his perfect night. That's played as the man's on deck,
Segee deliver's fastball swung, I'm popped up. I'm gonna be
(01:46:38):
shadowing right center field coming in for it as Jim Gosker.
He wants that the center fielder moves in and makes
the catch for out number two. Imagine about these six
lifetime wins that Segee has posted the competition with the
Angels once in a while. He was one and there
(01:47:03):
against the Californians last year. That elaborate motion that the
big turn of the back turns his back toward home plate.
Supposes all of that number twenty four right card lofts
at a slider, hard slider for strike wand then you
(01:47:25):
run this man long after say it started like Marty Patten,
who there's more of the conventional wind up style of delivery.
We tough to pick it up right guard with a
feeble swing on this Rick trying to figure out what
he had thrown pitch that kind of turned in on Rick,
kind of boring movement to the right hander at it,
(01:47:47):
strike two, right guard to the base hit the left
of the first went to right field with his head
in the third up the middle of the fifth Segina
post the advantage two strikes on Rick, two outs of
that on Pilot's four the angels to last half of
(01:48:09):
the seven. Sage takes some time. Right card steps out,
mister shyl Like now making the indication to go ahead
and pitch two strike delivery by Diego outside with it
(01:48:32):
one and two one two delivery and the right card
takes a Lord of the Corn has ball too and
(01:48:52):
strike two and as Harry Whismer, the late Harry Whismers say,
we've just received a very nice telegram here from Bill Tucker.
Bill Tucker sending a wire to Dick Nelson and said,
it is nice to know you'll be back again this
year to do whatever it is you do. And the
(01:49:12):
two too delivery right card lobs at poul Let's put
out a pool that hangs at two and two. Bill
Tucker always did appreciate Dick's talent. Sism engineer producer yours
two two count on the right card, nobody on the
(01:49:35):
basis and two and the pitch by Sage and a
spiking a message of the past blombers like crave So
Diego has three strikeouts or the Angel is a quick
story with nothing across the score now at the end
of seven innings, as Seattle poor and the Angels too.
More than twenty years ago, Cincinnati and Brooklyn set a
(01:49:56):
major league record that still stands in the record book
nineteen in to Baseball that ended with the score Cincinnati
nothing in Brooklyn nothing, the longest scoreless tie game ever recorded.
You're smoking, However, there's no such thing as a tie
when it comes to taste. Camp out scores all the
others king size or one hundreds. You just light up
(01:50:17):
when good taste happened. No wonder people ever were are saying, Hey,
what a good time? Or I can't a good time?
Speaker 6 (01:50:36):
The good taste wisdom like the day.
Speaker 2 (01:50:42):
When good times happened. That's the time for a kid.
Speaker 5 (01:50:45):
You light up and pay good taste happened.
Speaker 2 (01:50:54):
You can bet her home run for the money as
often as you wish. Send your entry to Box three,
Los Angeles nine, double O, five to one, many special
dribs in a test that I Little love running from
Bom Springs from Howard Matter with two hundred and twenty
five Tom Springs, the Pilots and the Angels, with Seattle
leading four to two, Rich Rollins steps out of the
(01:51:15):
batter's box, so look at Rudy may see if then
he gets underway. Let's get back to dickon Angels trail
four to two and Rollins takes the first pitch of
fastball out cross the letter through a Coles strike. Rollins Tonight,
the third baseman has flown to left field, grounded the
third and walk facing Eddie Fisher in the fifth inning,
he's over two. He'll be followed by Jim Gosk and
(01:51:36):
Jerry mcnurtney. May rocks into us wind up in the pitch,
curveball line drive left field. It'll drop in for a
base him in front of right card ball. I hit
that hard as it was off the handle of Rollins,
but he served it into left field, the ball dropping
quickly for a base hit. So that's the first hit
off May and the sixth hit by the pilots. Tonight,
Luke Pias tingle to left field center, Jim gotscher oh
(01:52:01):
for two, walked in the first inning, grounded the short
and struck out Angel. Relief pitching out standing. Clyde Wright
worked in ny and two thirds no hits Eddie Fisher
in four innings of work allowed only one hit play
Kent Newport and True's exciting game home run for the money.
No one has a better chance of winning one thousand
dollars in more than you, and we had a winner
(01:52:23):
tonight on Jim Fergussi's home run. The pitch buntry towards
Stewart at first base, Stuart bumbles off May and safe
at first basis Coscar, I'm moving to second is rich Hollins,
May breaking off the mound as Stuart came in to
(01:52:44):
field the ball. It was a high, chopping bunch. Stuart
evidently took his eye off it because it bounded off
the heel of his glove to May. May, trying to
pick it up quickly in surprise, dropped it and by
that time Seattle had runners at second and first and
knowing up. So the first air nineteen sixty nine almost
predictably goes to Dick Stewart.
Speaker 5 (01:53:07):
Catch.
Speaker 2 (01:53:07):
Actually Oscar not charged with the time at bat as
he was trying to sacrifice. He's safe on the earth,
rollins to second base, and here's the catcher mcnurtney, and
May steps off the rubber. Stewart already creeping in from
first base and Rodriguez from third, anticipating the bun by
mcnurtney the pilot's funding with one on and knowing not
(01:53:29):
and now with two runners on, it figures they would
try to move them along. Leading four to two. Top
of the eighth inning, May from the belt. Here's the
pitch curveball grounded two frogosiat short. He goes to canop
for one Cannoff's three lay the first double fla oh,
(01:53:50):
the pitcher's best friend, the double playing Fregosi to canop
to Stewart six, four to three, and with two away,
Rollins moves to third, and here's ray Eyler NOI. Rickney
has jumped out of the Angel dug out and is
trotting out to the mound to be sure that Rudy
May and Tom Satriano know all the possible plays that
might be in the works for Seattle. Oiler is not
(01:54:12):
a strong hitter. They have an open base at first base,
and it may be that Rigas at least asked his
battery whether or not they'd like to walk Oiler and
force a decision by manager Joe Schultzez to whether or
not he wants Segie to hit or lift him for
a pin shitter, and of course, the way Segi has
been throwing, the Angels would like very much to get
(01:54:35):
him out of the ball game. He has handcuffed the
Angels since coming in in the sixth inning and relieved
party pattern. So here's ray oilers oiler is over too.
He walked rounded the first and popped a third, winding
up as may and here's the pitch hi fastball ball one.
(01:54:58):
So the Angels were their first double play of the
new year as the keystone combination of Fregosi and Canapp
turn it over the pitch toiler, curveball bunt try missus
strike one one and one. Well, the expansion teams have
made it three out of three and they're leading in
the fourth game. The Padres of San Diego two the
(01:55:21):
Houston Astros one a final from San Diego two, four
and oh for the Padres, one five and one for Houston.
The pitch swung on tap toward Corssetti, the third base coach,
who gives it a hotty ado and lets it roll
down off the barrier into the left field corner. The
winner with stick Semma the Lozard nine Wilson twenty three thousand,
(01:55:43):
three hundred and seventy in San Diego to welcome Major
League Baseball tonight. The one two Pitchiler, he takes hive
ball two, rollin's at third base, two away. Eighth innings
Seattle four, Angels two, so Kansas City beat Minnesota four
to three. Montreal outlasted the New York Mets eleven to ten.
(01:56:08):
San Diego wins two to one, and Seattle leads here
four to two. Swing and a miss right three. Eiler
goes down swinging and they pitches out of the inning.
Rudy's third strikeout and four Seattle in the eighth, no run,
one hit, one air and one man left Angels coming
to back bottom of the eighth inning with a score
(01:56:29):
Seattle four and the Angels two. Last of the eighth inning.
The Angels, with nine hits, three more than Seattle, but
a frail droughout, go now four to two and against
Diego sagee. It'll be Dick Stewart, Aurelio Rodriguez, and Tom
Satriano for the Angels. Stewart they suck out twice and
(01:56:51):
walked in their third inning, and Stewart facing Diego Segee
to win. Two innings of work has taken care of
half of the outs himself with strikeouts perched to top
the rubbers. Segie ball in the glove, gets a sign,
winds and delivers Hi with a fastball ball one segee
(01:57:12):
in a modified version of Louis Tian's Show the Hitter
your numbers, delivery will kind of pause for a moment
on his right foot while Perch turn his back to
the hitter and then twist and fire the ball. Here
it comes. One ball delivery, swung on and miss strike one,
A ball and a strike to Dick's Stewart. Angels got
(01:57:39):
their two runs one and the second inning on singles
by Rodriguezatriano and can Up and a home run by
Fragosi in the fifth the one one pitch the Stewart
he swings and missus one and two to stew The
Pilots with four runs in the first inning off the
start of McLoughlin, a double by Harper, He's scoring on
a home run over the right fields by Mike Heagan,
(01:58:01):
a single by Davis Minure hit by a pitch, a
walk to Gosker, and mcnurtney's basis loaded single accounted for
the four rounds, and they have held up throughout the
pitch taken high two and two. Segee turns to look
at the big A scoreboard shows the totals four six
(01:58:22):
and zero for Seattle, two nine and one for the Angels,
knowing up last of the eighth and the Angels running
out of time two to two. Pitch from Sagee to Stewart,
strike three, swinging Stewart down for the third time tonight.
(01:58:42):
The four strikeout by Segee, who has been overpowering third base.
That's the eighth strikeout recorded by Seattle pitching tonight and
tomorrow night it'll be Mike Marshall and Andy Messersmith as
Seattle and the Angels complete their break two game series
off day Thursday, then the Twins in Friday night, Saturday
(01:59:03):
night and Sunday afternoon, and then on Monday night one
game with the White Sox, and then we go on
the road to pitch to Rodriguez, high curveball ball one
Aurelio one for two. He singled to open the second
inning and scored on Bobby Knopp's long drive at the
forced hegan into that collision course in the right field corner.
(01:59:24):
He struck out in the third and walked in the
sixth inning, and it was the walk that caused manager
Joe Schultz to pull his pitcher, Marty Patten inside with
a fastball to and zero. In the sixth inning, Rodriguez
walked the lead off. That's when Segie came in to
replace Patten. Satriana on the first pitch lined a long
(01:59:45):
single down the right field line, and with runners on
first and third, Segee struck out canop and reposts and
got lost to fly out line drive one hop, Oiler
with a fine play is underhanded throwing plenty of time.
Ray Oiler with some fancy fielding in the SA battle
in field, a low liner by Rodriguez that exploded at
the feet of Oiler, who made the short hop and
(02:00:06):
then the easy throw across still away for the Angels
in the eighth and Tom Satriano two four to two
tonight looping single to center in the second inning, walked
in a vood and a line single down the right
field line in the sixth inning, the only hit off Sagee,
who since has retired eight men in a row. Satch
(02:00:29):
left handed inter chokes up on the bed, Segee wines
and fires Hi with a slider. Seattle infield and outfield
well balanced medium depth playing Satriano straight away right guyed
(02:00:49):
with three hits, Satriano with two. Tonight the pitch fastball
in there for a strike, Fregosi with a home run.
Johnstone was the single right guard with three singles, a
single by Rodriguez, two singles by Satriano, a single by Canop.
(02:01:09):
The Angel nine hits. The pitch foul back to the screen,
one and two to Tom Satriano. That was an off
speed pitch by Seghie. Jim Bouton, who is now a
bona fide knuckleballer, has stopped throwing, and now it's John
(02:01:30):
Morris working very easily down in the bullpen for Seattle.
Jack Aker is also resting after being completely warm. The
one to two pitch round ball sharply in the right
field and Satriano has his third hit of a knife
so satch and right guard three hits apiece and the
(02:01:53):
Angels now with a total of ten rail four to
two and Bobby Canopp representing the dying run with two odds.
In the eighth n go step in he knocks and
dirt from his plates as he checks with third base
coach Mike Rored. The Angels have Bob Chance big left
headed hit her on the bench head at the possible
pinch hitter. As we come up to the pitcher's spot,
(02:02:15):
the ninth spot in the order manned by Roger Repos
and then after Repose, it's the pitcher's turn where a
chance might be used if a right hand is still
in the game. Here's the pitch to come up inside
fastball ball one. Bobby with that long fly ball into
(02:02:38):
the corner and right Heaven made a spectacular play on him,
but as he caught the ball crashed into the barrier
and was knocked a woozy ball fall three. Kannop got
an RBI single but was out as he passed the
runner Sat Priano at for his base. The pitch grounded
sharply but right at Robins at third. Big Coffee goes
the short way for the force of seconds. So the
Angels are out on the eighth inning, no runs, one hit.
(02:03:01):
Nowhere is one left the stranded nine, and we go
to the top of the ninth inning with the new
Seattle Pilots leading four to two. Beer Bus shot the
best rice beer.
Speaker 6 (02:03:26):
Basalt based.
Speaker 2 (02:03:38):
Appear Bush best popular priced beer in America, and Yambrick
(02:04:17):
with Don Wells and Dick Nelson, We're mighty happy that
you joined us on opening night at Anaheim Stadium, as
the Seattle Pilots are just three outs away from making
it a clean sweep for the new clubs. The new
franchises about three outs away at least about to make
it a sweep. Four victories on opening night, and that
(02:04:38):
really the odds on that, Jimmy, the Greek Las Vegas
would have to be up in triple figures. Pick them
up with a line on all four new teams winning
their debut games. Here's Diego Sagee leading off against Rudy May,
a big swing and a miss a little right handed
(02:04:59):
hitter Marty Patten, the starter was one for three for
the Pilots. First trip up there for Sagee with Seattle
leading four to two, four runs in the first inning.
I with the fastball one and one, Rudy May drawing
(02:05:20):
to Diego Sagee. Then it'll be Tommy Harper and Steve
Whitaker for the Pilots. Pilots with six hits in the ballgame,
four in the first inning, swung on a mist of
curveball one and two. Harper's double all run by Hegan
single by Davis and a bassis loaded single by Jerry
(02:05:40):
mcnurtney and Jim McLoughlin was out of the ballgame four runs,
having scored two. Then on strike three, called as May.
It's the outside corner with a fastball. Rudy May very
effective in relief Tonight has his fourth stringer of her
seven base in fact the angel relief pitching since McLoughlin
(02:06:10):
retired but one hitter in the first inning the rest
of the way, allowing only two hits. The pitch to
Harper is a fastball on the corner inside for a strike.
Harper laid off double In the same inning he recorded
the third out when he grounded the Rodriguez where the
bases loaded. Aurelio got the force at third. He walked
in the fourth and popped to third his only other
(02:06:31):
time up. So Harper is one to three. Tommy with
great speed, takes outside one in one May wears glasses,
ranks up and fires again curveballs strike two, call clide
(02:06:52):
right and inning and two thirds in relief of McLoughlin
in the first inning, no runs, no hits. Eddie Fisher
four fine innings allowing only one hit, no runs, and
now Rudy May working in his third inning. He's allowed
just one hit and no runs. May nod's okay, the
one to two picks Harper takes outside and high ball two.
(02:07:15):
Angel infield remains intact. Rodriguez for Goo see Knop and
Stewart the outfield right, Carton left, Johnstone and center and
Roger Repo's and Wright. The pitch swung on and missed
strike three. Roady May strikes out Saghee and Harper to
(02:07:37):
open the ninth inning and now has a total of
five two and two thirds. Sayings to work, and here's
Steve Whittaker. Whittaker up twice in relief of the injured
Mike Hegan, has grounded the second and struck out first
man facing May in the seventh Inny Heagan were happy
to report the first indication was he suffered only a
sprain wrist and a bruised hip. The pitch to Whitaker
(02:08:01):
a long drive to ride, but it'll be fouled by
a good distance way back in the stands in the
mezzanine level, and then it trickles down into the lower
deck where a youngster racing with a ball all the
way down the line down an empty aisle got the
rebound one strike to Steve Whittaker. How this scores Pittsburgh six,
(02:08:22):
Saint Louis two. The pitch filed back to the screens,
the Cub seven, the phil six. Montreal beat the Mets
eleven to ten, and San Diego over Houston two to one.
Atlanta the only team in the Big leagues with two
victories on the New year. I tend to two win
of the Giants. Tonight the American League, Kansas City beat
(02:08:43):
Minnesota four to three. Detroyed over Cleveland sixty two. Boston
de Baltimore. The pitch, excuse me, swing and a file
back to the screens, Boston de Baltimore six to five.
S I guess that takes care of all the games
(02:09:04):
except this one here. Oh, and Oakland tonight defeated the
White Sox five to two. We'll have all the home
runs and pitching details on the postgame show. The pitch
swung on and miss like three. Rudy Mace rights out
the Pilots in the ninth inning, and he leaves after
three sparkling innings, striking out six Seattle hitters. Three up,
(02:09:26):
three down for the Pilots. Bottom of the ninth inning
and the Angel's final turn as they trail Seattle four
The Angels two. If a baseball team slipped an extra
man into their infield or into their banning order, it
would hardly be sportsmanlike, although at times you might be
tempted if you had the chance. The Continental Airlines has
(02:09:49):
an extra man on their flight team, and it's absolutely great.
He's called the Director of Passenger Services and he's on
every confidental bowling fanchet. He doesn't do the work of
the four Lovely hostesses, Oh no, sir. He's on board
to do extra things for you, things that aren't easy
to come by on the other airlines, like owning a
head for you to make a hotel or rental car reservation,
(02:10:11):
or helping you make a close connection, or even selling
you a ticket if you didn't have time to buy
one before you came aboard. Wide As Continental put this
extra crew member in the cabin. Well, that's the difference.
Pride makes the airline that's better because it wants to
be Continental Airlines. The proud Bird. Now let the gold
Otaale number twin you Wayne Comber. Wayne Comer inserted as
(02:10:38):
a defensive replacement in the Seattle outfield Comer is in
left field, replacing Tonny Davis. So the outfield for the
Pilots reads Comber and left, the Oscar and center Quitaker
and right it's Mincher and Harper, Boiler and Rollins on
the infield. Nurt Me the catcher, and Diegosagie his fourth
(02:11:00):
inning and relief. The picture, Roger repos leads off for
the Angels, to be followed by the pitchers spot and
Lou Johnson is kneeling in the on deck circle. So
Sweet Lou will make his official debut under the Halo Tonight.
Final score AVA playoff Oakland one twenty one, Denver ninety nine,
(02:11:22):
all set. Now last to the ninth inning, Angels trail
four to two. The Pilot's pitcher, Diego Sagie winds and
fires the repost a strike at the knees. As Joe
Schultz told Don Wells on our Angel warm up show
before the years over, the American League will know all
(02:11:44):
about us, and we're going to rough up a few people,
and the Angels know all two zoons. Sage delivers low here.
The Diego turn that one over a bit as it
was moving away from the left handed hitter, a ball
and a strike to repos. Roger has a pin sitter
with one out and runners at the corners in the
sixth inning, became the second strike. Add victim of Segie.
(02:12:06):
This is his second trip. Angels would like to see
him get on there. The one one pitch inside and
just missed the corner. Two and one. The Angels and
(02:12:26):
they're cut down to twenty five, have nine pitchers, three catchers.
They have six infielders and seven outfielders. Segie brushes off
the first sign given by mcnurtney, and here's the two
to one pitch, checks wing low ball three, three balls
in a strike and Segee unhappy with himself as he
(02:12:49):
had evidently negated the sign given by mcnurtney. He wanted
to throw that change and a drop Low reposed did
not bite. So Roger for the Angels trailing four to two,
and any base runner would bring up the potential trying run,
may be asked here to take this three one pitch.
Segee nod's okay, wines and delivers high all four. That's
(02:13:24):
the hearse walk. You don't have buy Sigie and the
fans recognized sweet Low, said Lou Johnson well. Lou Johnson
(02:13:44):
has played only one game in this park as an Angel,
and that was last Sunday. He was three for four
and hit a two run home run in the ninth
inning to tie it and send it into overtime sixty
six with Oakland, repos with his lead the pitch to Johnson,
check swing straight, call on the outside corner. A good
slide that's gone by Seghie. So I'm thirteen thousand fans
(02:14:06):
in the ballpark. Some have left, but some here to
fight a cheer on the Angels. In their final turn,
trailing four to two, repose with a lead the one
strike pitch to Johnson. He takes just off the corner
one and one. Old Dizzy Dean would say, eyes like
an eagle on Edwin. That was a good pitch drawn
by Seghee. A ball in a strike. Jim Fragosi on
(02:14:28):
deck if you want to look ahead After progotiate's Johnstone
and Reichard proposed with a walking lead Minture playing just
behind him. The pitch in the dirt blocked nicely by mcnurtney.
Two and one the count and Johnson asked played umpire
Nessar Shilac to look at the ball after it skidded
into that raved red brick around home plate and Shilac
throws it out of play. Mcnurtney rubs a wrinkle into
(02:14:53):
a new ball and returns it to the mount and
Diego Seghee down in the Seattle bullpen. Action stirs a
right hander and a left hander. The left hander is
Morse i've leaeve. The right hander is Acre. Two bolts,
one strike. The action pitch coming up to Lou Johnson.
(02:15:14):
Lou of that open stand says, repost takes his lead.
Here it comes Hive all three and here comes the barber.
Sal Magle jogs out to the mound to talk with
Diego Segie, and Segi walks off the mound and blows
on his hands a little aliva, and gave made quite
(02:15:38):
a point of walking off the mound to do that,
to make sure he was on the grass part of
the infield. Maglid out for the first time when Marty
Patten was removed. It was the manager, Joe Schultz who
came to the hill. Segie stays. Maglide jogs back to
the dugout, and he evidently had a message that was
(02:16:02):
very brief. Go offer his little right handed relief staf
three balls and a strike, and Segi is ready, checks
the runner and delivers high ball four. So the time
(02:16:24):
run is on. Lol Johnson works Aga for a walk.
Repost moves up ninety feet and here's Jim Fergossi. Rich
Rellins comes in from third base, and this might be
a delaying tactic. Rellins hauled in to Chad with the
gate got Faghossi. They hit her Aker, a right hander
(02:16:47):
works is ready, and the left hander Mori Racosi tonight
one for four. His home run in the fifth inning
cut the lead to four to two. Angel fans calling
for a repeat, Runners take their lead. Fragossi squares and
take five all on. So the bunt was on. Mincher
(02:17:09):
pulled in from first base, and here comes Joe Schaltz,
So that'll be all for Segee, who suddenly has become
wild high Segie with us back to the Seattle dugout
in a manner of not wanting to look at Schultz,
but he's through. This is the second appearance five the
Seattle manager or his representative in this inning. So Sagie
(02:17:30):
after three brilliant innings in relief, allowing only one hit
and striking out four runs into control problems and the
last of the ninth inning leading for to two. He
walks Rippos, and he walks Lou Johnson and assumed Praghossi
waits in chats with Jay Johnstone, the on deck hitter.
We paused for station identification. This is the Angels Baseball Network.
(02:17:53):
This is Bruce Hason, KMPC News. When the news breaks,
KMPC puts the pieces together following the game for the
latest news. The Japangel the count one ball to Jim
(02:18:13):
Fragosi leans on as bad as if it were a
big walking stick, now turns and nervously strolls forward. The
Angels ug out hearted. In from the bullpen in right
field is the right hander Jack Acre, a K E. R. Acre,
(02:18:33):
a Fireman of the Year trophy winners well with the
Kansas City As and then the Angels have long sought
to get under a halo themselves. But there's exactly are
Jack Delaine Acre, twenty nine years old from Zi Larry, California. Six.
(02:18:59):
He was drafted twelve by to Seattle and his first
pitch as Elon Jerg gets away from the Casher Mcnerthny
in nineteen sixty six. Acre won the Fireman honors as
he had twenty six saves to lead the major leagues
(02:19:21):
and won eight more ball games, losing four in sixty
six game appearances. Then in sixty seven he sailed off
to a three and eight record with a four point
three o ERA. The year before the year he won
the Howner one point nine to nine as he was
almost letter perfect. Last year with Oakland, he divided eight
decisions four and four, and his cra again was over
(02:19:43):
the four run mark four point oh eight, Jack Acre
and down. Trying to search back to the exhibition schedule.
I believe it was Acre that was pitching when Dick
Stewart did one of the springtime home runs. So we
may be an airlor. He got to think, you're right,
(02:20:05):
that goes out. I look back to something else too.
He kind of tied for Ghosty's nuts that same game.
That side as off. The man's got to come from
the side to the right headers here. You got to
keep your head in there. You got to stay and
head out to God one and oh in a fourteen
to nine win. He add over the Angels in tenth Eve,
(02:20:27):
Dick Stuart hit a grand Slam pinch home run off
taker that gave the Angels the late eight to seven. Fagosi,
with the infield in looking for the bun Aker stares
back at second his pitch inside ball two, knowing out
repos up good runner at second base. Johnson, who loves
(02:20:49):
to fly, is at first base, representing the tying run.
The count now to and zero. And if your manager,
Bill Rigney, do you let faghosts take us wipe at
this two old pitch with that infield moving your looking
for the bunt acres ready here it comes funted by Progosi,
good fun third baseline, Rollin passes this roll cross in
time and Praghossi gets the job done. Are they are
(02:21:16):
all kinds of things that make you a major leaguer.
And there's one of the toughest plays to make you
have to bunt it hard enough so that the third
baseman has to heal the ball. And Forgos's fun was perfect.
Rollin's got the footouts going with Tommy Harper the second
asman covering at first. The oup recorded five to four.
I was won away. Jay Johnstone, the hitter repos at
(02:21:40):
third and just a single away from time the game
is Lou Johnson at second base the right side of
the infield, looking for Johnstone to pull very deep. Harper's
on the grass and Don mentioned the first basement only
a couple of steps away from the outfield grass outfield
deepen around toward right the wind up by Acre. The
pitch Johnstone straight, call a fastball on the outside corner.
(02:22:05):
Johnstone to knife single. In the first inning, the grounded
the first hop to second fly ball to center field.
He's one for four. Rick Reitchard, who is three for four,
is in the ondeck circle. Johnstone back held straight perpendicular
to the ground. The pitch off the barel end of
(02:22:25):
the back queed right two right guard in the ondeck circle.
Strike two. So Johnstone out in front of that curveball
just a little mistew over the right guard all and two.
Acre way ahead, goes to the middle of his cap,
then to the rosen bag, then to the dirt, turns
(02:22:45):
his chin, wiping the side of his face on his
right shoulder. Now Fidgets goes to the belt ball on
the glove as he gets a sign from Lucnurtnee. The
O two pitch on its way to Johnstone, Jay swings
taps apart the right side a run wall Star, but
Harper throws out Johnstone. They're two outs and Lou Johnson
moves the third three postscores the third run for the Angels.
(02:23:12):
The score now Seattle for the Angels, three Lou Johnson
blue si at third days and years, Rick reycard rech
Cart singled on the ground the left in the first,
singled on the ground the right in the third line
to single the center in the fifth. He struck out
against the ghee in the seventh, and he's three for
four and the RBI king last year for the Angels
(02:23:35):
and again this spring. Asked to deliver on opening night
and force this one into overtime. Johnson strolls away from
third base right Cart ready in the batter's box. Acre
delivers swung on a miss Fike line inside fastball thrown
by Acre right into the power of right guard. He
(02:23:56):
had a good rip outfield very deep for and the
right fielder, Steve Whitaker now has motioned to move back
toward right field. He's been playing over in right center.
In field deep Johnson with his lead Acre will work
from the stretch the one strike pitch side arm chock
Faul right at the feet of right card oh and two.
(02:24:18):
So Jack Acre jumps in front of Johnstone oh and
two and now has two strikes on right guards. Both
pitches to the right handed hitter right card have been
from the side arm delivery, and both fatballs tailing right
in on the hands of Rick dying round ninety feet away. Loud.
(02:24:40):
Johnson hands on his hips, studying look atcher Raker, who's
in position on the rubber right guards seven the batter's bucks.
Here comes the two pitch from jack Acre. He looks
at third, looks again, now again, and now delivers shot
down the third base line file. A play like that
(02:25:01):
should be troublesome for the Seattle infield. As we mentioned,
they're playing right guard very deep and reite guard has
excellent speed, and an infield hit would serve the same
purpose of a triple here, that's to tap the ball game.
Johnson eagerly takes his lead at third base as far
(02:25:21):
away from the bag as rich Rowlands is from third base. Baker,
not working from the wind up, says no, and then yes,
just strike pitch chop down the third day line. Rollins
has it on too, hots his long throw in time
and the Seattle pilots Cuba and played leap in the air.
They have won their first game ever and it's a
(02:25:42):
clean sweep for all the new franchises. As the Pilots
in the final game to go into the books on
this opening night, followed the lead taken by the Montreal
next post the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, and
now it's the Seattle Pilots to the night at Anaheim
Stadium before eleven thousand, nine one hundred and thirty Mans
defeat the Angels four to three on more first inning
(02:26:04):
runs with a totals years time I four Seattle's four runs,
the flext head snow airs, they left seven n on
the Angels three runs, ten hits, one airs Mans of
ten men Frodnie Patton the winner now one of those
and Jim mclough and the loser on won three homers
in the game. Mike Heagan of the first and the
mat on, Jim Fergussi and the fifth with Domedy on
and the paint attendance eleven thousand, nine hundred and thirty five.
(02:26:28):
Our guest tonight is Tommy Davis of the Seattle boff
Up and following the palm run by Mike Eagan with
a mat out of the first and then Tommy came
through with the base head police kept it rolling. Finally,
Jerry mcnurtey came through with a single that drove in
two runs as both Tommy Davis and Don Mitchell score.
Let's meat. I guess right now, Tommy Davis and start
things up with Nick tom with two outs and Loud
Johnson at third and the ninth inning and the score
(02:26:50):
then four to three. As Don Mitcher caught the throw
from Rollins for the final out of the game and
Seattle had won, he leaped triumphantly off the bag, both
hands over his head, and I guess that pretty well
symbolizes the feeling of all the ballplayers who are now
with a new team. The pilots and congratulations on your
first win.
Speaker 5 (02:27:06):
Thank you, Dick.
Speaker 2 (02:27:07):
We worked very hard this spring.
Speaker 8 (02:27:09):
We've got a lot of fellows who've had experience and
they know the meaning of winning, and we want to
prove to the rest of the league that this is
no pushover.
Speaker 5 (02:27:17):
We're not a team that's just gonna go out in
the field and that's just lay down on every game.
Speaker 8 (02:27:22):
They have a pretty good offensive blub you know, you
got Rich.
Speaker 5 (02:27:25):
Rollins and you're starting off.
Speaker 8 (02:27:27):
The Tommy Hopper who was a good leadoff man, and
young Mike.
Speaker 5 (02:27:32):
He can know.
Speaker 8 (02:27:32):
I can't say enough about because you had a fantastic
spring and then you got mentioned Don Minscher. They have
tell us to go to a swing that bet and
with the fishing handling itself like you did tonight.
Speaker 5 (02:27:43):
I think we're going to be a pretty tough day.
Speaker 2 (02:27:45):
Time. You won the game in the first inning, So
let's go back to that very first time at bat
for the franchise. Harper gets the double, then Hegan hits
the home run, and it appears that your line drives
through the middle against Mclothin I've set in perhaps even
more than the home run. You really drilled one through them.
I don't know. You prevented that ball from hitting him.
Speaker 8 (02:28:02):
In fact, well that could have upset him because if
he had got hit when Daddy might have gotten hurried.
Speaker 5 (02:28:06):
It was hit fairly good, but it.
Speaker 8 (02:28:08):
Next you sometimes can't get down fast enough to protect himself.
He worries about them up and then getting maybe a
home run or something, because he could be out for
a while and and maybe not get a chance to
get it.
Speaker 5 (02:28:17):
To gain his confidence in his in his style again,
I would imagine he took.
Speaker 2 (02:28:22):
A little time to recover.
Speaker 5 (02:28:23):
But Begarth is a good pitcher and I'm quite sure
he'll come back.
Speaker 2 (02:28:27):
So Tommy made a comment earlier about your manager, Joe Schultzer.
Joe is a fellow that doesn't like to see any
timid hitters around it. That was one of the defensive
hitters on his team. You guys are off, you know,
you're up up there everywhere is going to take a
good rip.
Speaker 8 (02:28:43):
I'll tell you, Joe, keep keep your mind on baseball.
He had his working pretty good to spring, and he
gave the ball player, the hitters on the club, a
lot of live batting directors. So he'd like to see
a lot of hitting and also a whole lot of exercises.
Speaker 2 (02:28:55):
The whole lot of running.
Speaker 5 (02:28:56):
In the spring too, he did a lot of a
lot of Cali sets.
Speaker 8 (02:28:59):
Huh I did We did it factally every day until
in fact we did it so he got tired. No,
in fact, we did it yesterday.
Speaker 2 (02:29:06):
Off though. Did the calus ends.
Speaker 5 (02:29:08):
Up to the beginnings the season?
Speaker 2 (02:29:10):
Well, you know, it's an interesting thing. You see, fellas
you've known in baseball, especially say an opening night or
opening day and there's usually a little looseness, but it
doesn't seem to hold true with your team when they
arrived tonight. You're kind of a somber crew and it's
sort of the death. It seems that the dedication started
early for you.
Speaker 8 (02:29:28):
I'm telling you, we could feel a different I feel
joke got us together. Are real quick as a family
and a fellows seem to know each other. We've been
playing for a long time, so I think this is
going to help.
Speaker 2 (02:29:39):
This is gonna be a good, good club. I think
Tommy Mike Keingan made a sensational play on the outfield
only to crack in that collision course into the outfield wall.
Have you had a chance to see him or talk
with him since the injury?
Speaker 8 (02:29:51):
No, I haven't. I asked a couple of plays on
the bench what had happened, and somebody had said earlier
that it was bleeding from the mouth, but that wasn't
a major injury. Evidently must have been his tongue or something.
Speaker 5 (02:30:04):
But he ran into it with his wrists and his hip.
Speaker 8 (02:30:09):
Now they're gonna take his storys of it.
Speaker 5 (02:30:11):
I mentioned and what he said he felt real good,
and uh, it's just pretty bad bruises.
Speaker 2 (02:30:17):
I guess boy, he's a good one.
Speaker 5 (02:30:19):
I'll tell you it's.
Speaker 2 (02:30:20):
Gonna be great.
Speaker 8 (02:30:20):
He's can't avantas to spring and right now he should
be here because he really wrecked hot tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:30:26):
So Tommy, I know one thing looked out of the
lion scores of the other games of the American leg,
the White Sox had three hits in their game at Oakland,
so their attackers about the same. I think that you
fellas are on the right track. You're gonna come up
with quite a few of his story of the course
of the year.
Speaker 8 (02:30:41):
Yeah, well, yes, you well know the White I said,
Dodgers and a couple other clubs they played for the
one run and and if things don't go right for them,
they could eat and get in trouble. But if you
have a cluble they might give up one or two
or runs defensively, but it can get sick to ten offensively.
Speaker 5 (02:30:57):
It's a different story.
Speaker 2 (02:30:59):
But I want to thank you rad much for being
our guests, and we certainly hope that you have a
terrific nineteen sixty nine with the Seattle Club. Don and
Dick is always nice talk to you about Tommy Davis
our guest.
Speaker 10 (02:31:09):
This is John Miley speaking. We hope that you have
enjoyed this game. If you want to know more about
other items that exist in the Miley collection, call one
eight one two four seven nine nine one four three.
We will look forward to talking with you and hope
that you are pleased with our presentations.
Speaker 7 (02:31:28):
That's how I usually end each of our presentations. But
we have a little time left over and I would
like you to hear something that I just acquired. Most
of you have probably not heard of Rod Belcher. Rod
is not years young now and living in Des Moines,
not Iowa, but Washington. Rod has lived, like most of us,
(02:31:50):
a varied life, and he has many interesting accomplishments. For instance,
back in the fifties, when Liberty Radio ceased doing recreations
of baseball games, Rod got on board with a group
that was forming a recreation network. His job was to
bring those recreations alive to the listening audience. In fact,
(02:32:11):
he is the one who handles the recreation part of
Game three of the nineteen fifty three World Series, a
game we sell out of our catalog. He also did
some advertising work, some pa work, and indeed was a
jack of all trades. In fact, he actually did some
work with the Seattle Pilots. One day, he got the
idea that maybe the Pilots needed an official song, as
(02:32:34):
some teams.
Speaker 2 (02:32:35):
Have had down through the years.
Speaker 5 (02:32:37):
So what did he do.
Speaker 7 (02:32:38):
He became a songwriter and he wrote a song he
entitled Go Go You Pilots. The Pilots liked it so
much that they decided to play it for their fans
when they opened up at home against the White Sox
on April eleventh, nineteen sixty nine. And how did they
present it? They asked Rod to sing it to their
fans in pregame ceremony. Rod obliged, and the rest is history.
(02:33:03):
As they say, Rod never sang this or any other
song on any baseball field again. However, the Pilot's commissioned
Doris Doubleday, isn't that an interesting baseball name, and his
command Pilots an instrumental group to put the song on record,
and several thousand of those records were sold to the public.
Rod recently sent me a copy. We're going to end
(02:33:26):
this presentation by playing you this song of the Pilots,
Go Go, You Pilots.
Speaker 2 (02:33:32):
We hope you enjoy Go the pilot.
Speaker 6 (02:33:47):
You brought the major.
Speaker 2 (02:33:53):
You're going to be the destructive, said all read Sons.
Speaker 6 (02:34:01):
And whole fields. What they was still football?
Speaker 2 (02:34:04):
Uh is the ever a league that you've got? What's
all the spies?
Speaker 7 (02:34:08):
So you see it's.
Speaker 10 (02:34:10):
Only to be a guy, go.
Speaker 6 (02:34:16):
To do.
Speaker 2 (02:34:33):
Quite SuDS a fighter. The angels and the age see
the football.
Speaker 6 (02:34:38):
Allot Son or day Over reels sad.
Speaker 2 (02:34:42):
That there was then the ends and play.
Speaker 6 (02:34:46):
They that they die.
Speaker 2 (02:34:47):
You go.
Speaker 6 (02:34:49):
Go, you fire you got and see every see don't
go over to file beside the shot. The street were
with the fire, your bigly stuff
