Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kool Aid brand Regular and Sugar Swheat and soft Drink Mix.
You're never too old for kool Aid and by Firestone.
The people tire people who now put steel between you
and tire trouble. This is Jim Simpson along with Sandy
Kofax in Atlanta Stadium. The National League the loses last

(00:20):
year by a score of six to four and a
game played at Detroit in which there were six home runs,
three by each side, with a deciding home run hit
by Frank Robinson. Robinson is now over the National League
playing with the Dodgers, but prior to last year's lost
to the National League, the American League had lost to
the National League nine consecutive times and the National League
a very slow starter in this series, it began back

(00:41):
in nineteen thirty three, now owns a twenty three to
eighteen edge. There was one tie in the second game
in nineteen sixty one, led up at Boston's Fenway Park.
It was one to one, with Colorvido's American League home
run the only run for the American League at the
end of nine when rain ended the doll So the
series stands at twenty three eighteen one. This broadcast is

(01:01):
authorized on the broadcast rights We're granted by the Commissioner
of Baseball solely for the entertainment of our listening audience
in any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions
and the Council of the Game without the express consentive
the Commissioner of Baseball is prohibited. We'll give you the
lineups in a moment. But first of all, we would
like to welcome all of you listening around our country
and those of you tuning in via satellite in Europe,

(01:24):
and we're also heard this evening by a shortwave cable
in Saigon, in the Philippines, the Canal Zone, Alaska, and Turkey,
as well as in Japan. And we say hello to
all of you. Now for the American League, the visiting team,
this is the lineup. Rod carew Off the Minnesota Twins
will lead it off and play second base. Rod is
hitting three to one in his sixth consecutive starting appearance

(01:48):
as the American League second baseman in the All Star Game.
Bobby Mercer is out in centerfield for the second time
in as many years, and Mercer is the lone Yankee
on this squad. How times have changed. Reggie Jackson of
the Fines who hit that mammoth home run last year off.
Doc kellis in Detroit is out and right field. Tonight,
batting fourth clean up and playing at first base is

(02:09):
Dick Richie Allen the Chicago White Six. This is Dick
Allen's fourth start. In nineteen sixty five and sixty seven,
he was a third baseman while playing with the Philadelphia Phillies.
In nineteen seventy, while with the Saint Louis Cardinals, he
played first base. Here he is over in the American League,
playing first base and representing the Chicago White Six. Carlistremsky.
Believe it or not, Carlias Stremsky had his first home

(02:31):
run since last September the third last Saturday. But Yas
has still been voted in to the All Stars starting
lineup and will play left field in bat fifth. Remember
a couple of years ago down in Cincinnati, that ballgame
went twelve innings A Stremsky played six of those twelve
innings in the outfield, six in the infield. He went
all away. Now a source of contention, Bobby Grich from

(02:51):
Baltimore is playing at short stop. Not that Bobby Gritch
does not deserve an All Stars shot. But when Luis Safaricio,
who was voted on to the squad, came up with
the action finger, Campy Campanius at the Oakland A's was
announced as replacement for him and announced that he would start.
And yet Earl Weaver said yesterday afternoon in the press
conference that Bobby Grich, his short stop with the Orioles,

(03:14):
had been hitting close to two ninety for him all
year and he was going to be start starting, and
Campy campanairas we'll talk about that a little bit later on,
is not happy at all. Brooks Robinson, who else that's
seventh is sixteenth consecutive All Star Game. The votim oriol
third basement, hitting a two fifty eight and batting eighth.
The catcher from Detroit and his sixth starting assignment is

(03:35):
Bill Freehand. The pitcher, another Baltimore oriol is Jim Palmer,
who has won thirteen and lost four. Now for the
National League and want to line up this is Joe
Morgan of Cincinnati, who leads the league and runs with
eighty one, second in stolen bases with thirty six, first
in walks with seventy three, leads it off now Roberto

(03:56):
Clemetti was to have started in center field, and I
Butt is not starting. Sliding into a base on Sunday,
his first time back after being out with the virus
for two weeks, he has hurt his knee and so
Woody Mays gets the starting called an Itand for Willie
this is his twenty third All Star game. Only one
man has more that is Stanleyman Musical with twenty four

(04:18):
out in right field, and you'll hear a great cheer
for him. Hank Aaron hitting a two fifty eight twenty
home runs this year, six hundred and fifty nine in
his lifetime and more than two thousand RBIs his home
runs and RBIs of course his second only to the
great Man Babe Ruth, whose two run home run out
in Chicago nineteen thirty three on the first American League
Game and the first All Star Game for the American

(04:39):
League by a four to two score. Woody Stargule will
back forth clean up, playing out in left field, hitting
a two ninety six last year's home run and RBI
champion for the Majors. Now remember Stargele and Aaron currently
are playing for the Braves and Pirates at first base.
But they're voted into the outfield. Johnny Bench, what a
sensational year, leading the majors with twenty four home runs

(05:00):
and seventy two RBIs catches from the Cincinnati Reds and
bat's fifth. Lee May, who has been on the All
Star squad before but is making his first starting appearance.
Used to be with Cincinnati, now with the Houston Astros,
will bat six and play first base at alsis for
a lineup when you can have the most valuable player
of last year, the man who led both leagues and

(05:20):
hits with two hundred and thirty. Joe Toy the Saint
Louis Cardinals is batting seventh. Believe it or not, Don
Kessinger off the Chicago Cubs switch hitter is playing shortstop
and batting eighth, and Bob Gibson is batting nine. Gibson
lost his first five games of this year and has
since won eleven in a row, so his record is

(05:41):
eleven and five now. Apparratiow we've already mentioned out with
a fractured finger from the American League squad. Amos Orders
of Kansas City also on the squad and he is
out injured, and Toby Harra also on the squad from Texas.
He is out injured. There was no such injury announced
until the night for the National League when Clementi out.
While Sandy Kofax is my partner. But Sandy for the

(06:03):
moment is not in the booth because Sandy next month
is going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame
in Cooperstown, New York. And will Sandy is not in
the booth. I can say these things about it. He
is the youngest man ever voted into the Hall of Fame.
He was voted in exactly five years after he stopped baseball.
That's the minimum that you must be out of baseball.
And he was voted in with the largest number of

(06:25):
votes ever accumulated by any one man. That's the kind
of man and the kind of player my broadcast partner,
Sandy Colfax was and is and after he and several
other Hall of Famers throughout the first ceremonial pitch us
tonight he'll join us in the booth. But I worked
for many years with a colleague of mine, former Yankee
great at shortstop. As a matter of fact, he played everywhere.

(06:46):
He was Rookie of the Year in nineteen fifty seven,
and he made the All Star squad in the second year,
nineteen fifty eight. He's working the television side for NBC Tonight,
and just moments ago by tape, I talked with the
former Yankee and friend Kuback going to there are all
different kinds of ways to approach an All Star Game,
and that Sandy Gofac, for example, would be talking about

(07:06):
the pitching. But you've been in this position before, a
youngster in nineteen to fifty eight and your first All
Star Game. What were your feelings back then? And I
quote them at the wilder, a youngster like Carlton Fisk,
who possibly was the action today, the youngster from the
Boston Red Sox. Jim, I know just what you're talking about.
And of course the.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
All Star Game at times has been mentioned even by
players as a glorified exhibition game.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Not true.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
I saw Carleton Fisk around the batting case today and
down on the field. He was in complete awe of
all the superstars around him, the Maze, the Clementes, the Yastremskis.
And I remember my All Star Game, the first one
when Ted Williams ran up and down the dugout.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Exhorting the American League gone to score more runs, more runs.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
And as soon as that first pitch was thrown, I
looked at Williams, who was my boyhood idol, and I
knew what that game was all about. It was played
for Keith, just like a regular season.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Game or a World series. And let me ask you
about two different pitchers. First of all Bob Gibson, who
reportedly said and then later denied it when Earl Weaver
brought it up, that he didn't want to pitch in
this game, that he thought the regular season was more
important and he was looking into a Thursday start and
did not want to start tonight's game.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
But Bob claims, and I think he was, that he
was misquoted. He did never say that he did not
want to pitch in the ball game. He said he
preferred to pitch Thursday against Montreal because it meant.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
The penat or the tenant could be at stake.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
And to turn that around a little bit, Jim, I
just came up from the American League clubhouse. I talked
to Campy campanairas to show you the irony of it
and a reverse of what the Gibson started Campanairas is
so incensed that he is not starting this ballgame. He
has come out until Earl Weaver, his manager, if you
don't start me, I don't want to play. Of course,
when the game goes along, he'll play. I'll bet another
thing happened now down in the dugout, Nicky Lolich, who

(08:43):
of course is not getting the starting now it will
be Jimmy Palmer.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Lolich just said I.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
Want to start this game. I deserve it.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
So that's completely contradictory to what we're talking about with
Bob Gibson.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
All right, now, maybe some people do not know that
Louis Zaparicio was selected as the All Star shortstoff. Campanaris
was later picked and named as a starter now by
whom I don't know, perhaps by the league office, not
by Earl Weaver as far as I know. And when
Weaver got done here, he went for his own youngster,
Bobby Gritch. And that is why Cappaneris is in sense. Well,
let's continue on with Lolich. Billy Martin is telling Earl Weaver,

(09:13):
his opponent in the American League East Pennant Race, don't
pitch my man more than two innings and apparently he
went to the league office to try to stop off
Erl Weaver. Earl Weaver said he has absolutely no comment.
He said he's going to start his pitcher, Jim Palmer,
with the full intention of Palmer going three innings if
he's looking good, he said, And that's answer enough. If
my man can go three innings in a pennant race,
Billy Martin's man can go three innings, that's a funny

(09:34):
thing hanging around and walking around and being with you
and Sandy. I get the National League viewpoint from Sandy,
and we'll get a lot of that through tonight's game,
but from you, I get the American League viewpoint. They
were leading for a long while then the National League
won eight straight before last year. What do you think
about the leagues and what do you think about.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Tonight Jim Tonight specifically, I feel that the National League
has the best eight men on the field better than
the American League. I think possibly because the American League's
pitching staff has had more rest. They have had pitchers
who have pitched last Thursday and Friday with two and
three days rest. In some instances, most of the National
League games has have pits just like Saturday and Sunday.
I think this gives the edge to the American League.

(10:11):
For this reason, I also feel that the American League's
defense may be a little bit better, especially in the outfield.
Willie Stargel has had knee problems. He does not move
around very well anymore. Clementy, I understand, is going to
be out of the ball game to night. He heard
his knee sliding on Sunday. Henry Atne is getting old.
Let's face it, He's in his late thirties. He still
hits the ball and was a great defensive outfielder, but
he is.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Hurting with that right knee.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
So I think that they have problems defensively in the
outco This could be the outcome.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Of the game. I'll say, hey, you left something out there.
The fellow is taking over for Clementy in centerfield is
no youngs to himself what he may well great ball player.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
He's going to be batting in the number two spot,
which what was Formenty spots. But again, will he has
slowed down somebody. He still knows the heaters, knows how
to play the outfield, but he has slowed down.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
One game does not make one league. Tougher than the other,
of course, But the National League has been the dominant
league in recent years. And is there a reason or
don't you believe that the National League is a stronger
league as most people seem.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
To do Jim.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Seven of the last nine All Star Games have been
decided by one run, so it has not been a
complete domination. Last year's All Star Game was decided by
two runs, six to four.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
The American League has some.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Power and this ballpark of the pitcher is not careful,
and this is a disadvantage for the American leaguecause they
don't know Atlanta Stadium if they get the ball hind
the strike zone.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Aaron Lee may Stargill, you know what's going to happen.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
You've seen it happen before. And Sandy can.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
Tell you that the balls are going to go out
of this park because balls it off the handles fly
out here. Dyna McLane and everybody listening knows the saga
of Denny the thirty one game winner with Detroit and
then of course he went on to the Washington Senators.
The old Senator's out with Oakland down of Birmingham and
is now back with Atlanta, and he is writing for
a local newspaper, and according to Denny, who had not
been in the National League before, he said, the launching

(11:48):
dead for all over our space shots should have been
Atlanta Stadium and not Cape Canaveral or Cape Kennedy.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
He's right, we've seen balls flyt here. And it's not
the discredit Henry Air and all the home runs.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
I think he'shit one hundred and forty six of his career.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
Home runs in his ballpark. But the ball doesn't fly here.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
But still my feeling is with these two pitching staffs,
I do not think we're going to see a high
scoring ball game. I do not think it's going to
be a power game because these guys could get in
the telephone booth and it's hard to hit a ball
out of the ballpark on them. It's just they're just
that kind of pitchers, power pitchers.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
All right, Tony, thanks for being with us. Before you
turn to the television side, before you leave. Any final
thought at all about the night's game as we're about
to begin.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
It, Well, I want to pick the American League because
of a well rested pitching staff.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
I just think it's going.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
To be a low scoring game. I'm even going to
go out and Lemon State three to two American League,
three to two American League. You heard it here, right,
I'll be wrong again, but you heard it here.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Thank you, Tony Kubeck very much. Well, we'll keep that
in mind. Tony Kubek, former New York Yankee No. Of
NBC picks the American League by a three to two score.
While we were talking with Tony, the top crowd here
at Atlanta Stadium in Georgia has been entertained by the
Third Army Band and the Georgia State University Choir. In
just a few moments, everybody on this American and everybody

(12:54):
on this National League squad will be introduced one by
one to the crowd here at Atlanta Stadium. Bob Gibson
eleven and five. This year he has won two hundred
and seventeen games lifetime six one hundred ninety five pounds.
He's thirty six years old. Bourne still lives in Omaha, Nebraska.
In one of the fastest working pitchers in baseball today.
We will hardly have a chance to get our breath

(13:15):
before Bob will be up and throwing again. How long
he will go tonight, of course, depends on how effective
he is now long really that his manager, Danny Murtaw
wants to keep him in there. But remember the pitchers cannot,
except under unusual extra inning circumstances, stay in the ball
game more than three innings. So the most we will
see Bob Gibson tonight is for the first three innings
eleven and five. This year finer and run average two

(13:38):
point four to nine. He has struck out one hundred
and eleven and walked only forty one. And as we said,
he lost his first five but then came back to
win his next eleven. And speaking of Danny Murtaw, remember
he was the manager of the winning Pittsburgh Pirates that
seven game thriller with the Baltimore Oils in the World
Cheries last year. Now Danny is retired and is back,
though out of retirement, to manage tonight's NATIONALAU All Star squad.

(14:00):
And talking to Mertaw before to that's game, he said
he has only seen about a dozen games all year long,
and they have been National League games. Well, Earl Weaver
has been introduced. He's managing his third consecutive American League squad,
and Weaver said, I'm not down here for the fun
of it. I am down here to have fun, but
I am down here to win. The American League must
come back. They are introducing the lineup as we gave

(14:23):
them to you, or run it down again. Rod Crew
at second base from Minnesota. Bobby Mercer in center field
from New York. Reggie Jackson batting third and right field
from Oakland. Pick Allen of the White Sox batting clean up,
playing first base, Carlis Strempskin out in left field, batting fifth,
Bobby Gritch batting six playing shortstop. Brooks Robinson a third base,
Bill free Hand the catcher, and Jim Palmer the pitcher.

(14:46):
Now for Jim Palmer, another big man, sixty three one
hundred ninety six pounds, twenty six years old, ten years
younger than his opponent tonight Bob Gibson, but Mike Gibson.
He is a right hander. Jim was born in New York,
grew up in Los Angeles, but had a great high
school career out in the Scottsdale, Arizona area, where he
was All State in baseball, basketball, and football at Scottsdale

(15:07):
High and now lives outside of Baltimore in Timonium, he
went to Arizona State University in also taosand State. Jim
Palmer is one of the great comeback stories of all time.
He was one of those youngsters back in nineteen sixty
six when the Baltimore Oriols took four straight from the
Los Angeles Dodgers, including one from Sandy Kofax had won
the World Series, and thereafter Palmer was just not the same.

(15:30):
He had back in right shoulder problems in nineteen sixty seven.
The very next year he pitched only nine games for
the Oriols, seven games in the miners. The next year,
nineteen sixty eighty, pitched only in the miners at for
ten games. He had suffered torn muscles in his lower
back in nineteen sixty nine and was on the disabled
list for about six weeks. But here he is in
nineteen seventy two and he is starting this All Star

(15:51):
Game the forty third now. Tony Kubeck, in our talk
with him, mentioned the fact that the American League pitchers
had been rested more. Jim Palmer. His last game was
last Thursday, so that gives him plenty of rest in
that he had no decision. The game of Kansas City
works seven and two thirds innings, gave up three runs
and seven hits. Bob Gibson has had rest. On Friday,

(16:14):
he went nine innings and defeated these Atlanta Braves by
a score of two to one. Now thereafter, when you
dip down into the barrel of who is to be next,
Earl Weaver of the American League has already said Mickey
Lolich will be next. The last he pitch was on
Friday when he won three to one at Texas, going
the full nine innings. As you heard Tony said, Loliz says,
heck guy should be starting this game. Weavers says, no,

(16:36):
you will replace Palmer as the number two pitchers. So
Weaver is showing strong family ties when he names Bobby
Grich as his shortstop over Bert Kampaneris, who had been
picked over the injured Luis Zaparichio, and when he picked
Jim Palmer to start the game over seventeen game winner
Mickey Lolich. Now the National League, who will go second? Well,

(16:56):
Danny Murtau has not said, but it is a sension.
As we said, Bob Gibson, we'll go first. Five and
the last seven games in this All Star Classic have
been decided by one run. The official scorers tonight, and
there are always some scoring disputes Jack Lang of the
Long Island Press, who's the secretary of the Baseball Right
Association of America, from the Minneapolis Star, Max Nichols, who's

(17:20):
the chairman of the BBWAA, and locally from Atlanta the
Atlanta Constitution, Wayne Minshew. So those are the three scorers tonight,
Jack Lang, Max Nichols, and Wayne Minshew. The Oakland Athletics,
who at this moment lead the Western Division of the
American League by six and a half games over Chicago,
have six players here. Baltimore, which trails Detroit in the

(17:43):
Eastern Division of the American League by game, has five
players here here and over in the National League. For
the Pirates, they've got the most. They've got five and
the Pirates right now lead their Eastern Division of the
National League by five and a half games. Because of
the player's strife and because of many rainouts in other considerations,
this All Star Game is about three weeks later in

(18:07):
the schedule than normally. But you know, there's an old
saying about the All Star break. The team that is
winning its division at the All Star break that hand
is for Willie Mays. They did not know he was
going to start tonight over Clementi. And let me pause
right here because the next man to be introduced is
Henry Hank Aaron with those six hundred and fifty nine

(18:27):
home run standing ovation for Aaron. And if you think

(18:57):
this capacity crowd as given Hank a welcome here, if
he hits one out of here tonight, we may get
this game held up for minutes. Well back to the
subject of standings. At the All Star break last year,
at this time in the National League, Pittsburgh was ten
games ahead of New York and Chicago and went on

(19:17):
to win its division. Pittsburgh now is five and a
half games ahead of New York in the National League West.
At the All Star break a year ago, San Francisco
was six games ahead of the Dodgers. But the Big
Red Machine of nineteen seventy has come alive in nineteen
seventy two. Cincinnati is now on top, six games ahead
of Houston. What happened to San Francisco, Well, they are

(19:37):
eleven games below the five hundred mark and sixteen and
a half games out. That's the turnaround the Giants have
had over last year in the American League. A year ago,
at the All Star break, Baltimore was on top of
the Eastern Division by five and a half games over Boston.
Baltimore now prails Detroit by one game this year. In
the National League West, last year, Oakland was eleven and

(19:58):
a half games ahead of te and the City. This year,
Oakland is six and a half games ahead of Chicago.
Once these players have been introduced, we will have those
ceremonial pitches that I spoke of, in which Sandy Cofax
will participate. Sandy to be selected to the while he's

(20:20):
already been selected, but brought into the Hall of Fame
at Cooperstown, New York next month. Our national anthem will
be played in just a moment. And that's another story,
a sidebar story to this year's All Star Game. Pearl
Bailey was asked to sing the national anthem and had
to climb because of illness. Ray Stevens, a fine musician

(20:43):
and singer himself, is an Atlanta boy, an Atlanta man,
and they asked Ray to take over, but he has
checked into the hospital, we understand, with a kidney stone problem.
And so as of this morning, they did not know
who was going to sing our national anthem prior to
this forty third Dollar Star Game. The answer is Dennis
Yost will be introduced and he will sing our national anthem.

(21:07):
After which we will have those first pitchers and manager's
Earl Weaver the Baltimore Earls in the American League and
Danny murtau X of the Pittsburgh Pirates and of the
National League will present their lineup cards and then this
forty third All Star Game will get underway. Pretty good
hand there For Manny Sangian, there's a great argument raging

(21:31):
around the National League, and I'm sure everywhere where people
will pay attention to baseball. Who's the better catcher Johnny
Bench Rob Cincinnati, who this year drew more votes than
any other man on either squad? Or are there those
who say that Manny Sangion of the Pittsburgh Pirates is
the better catcher? The coaches tonight, first of all, for

(21:52):
the visiting American League, Bob Lemon of Kansas City will
be stationed at first base. Is the manager of the Royals.
Dick william manager of the Oakland A's, will be stationed
over at third base. The coaches for the National League
Red Shandea's of the Saint Louis Cardinals. Remember that home
runn he hit back in nineteen fifty in the fourteenth inning,
the first extra inning All Star Game ever. He'll be

(22:13):
at first base, and over at third base will be
San Francisco's Charlie Fox. And now on one of the
few National League fields that is not artificially turfed on
the grass in front of the mountain, goes the Army, Navy,
Marine and Coastguard color Guard with our flags, and Dennis
Shost walks out. The microphone has brought out for him,
and in just a moment we'll have the playing and
singing of our national anthem. Well by the timetable at

(24:12):
the Atlanta Braves set up for this All Star Game,
they're running a couple of minutes behind time, but everybody
here in Atlanta, and we hope that you are wherever
you are, having a great time anticipating this forty third
renewal of the All Star Game. And now rising down
belows in the Commission's box, just part way down from
home plate toward first base, Buck Leonard is going to

(24:35):
throw out. He is a new member of the Hall
of Fame, will be inducted. He's going to throw out
one of the first pitches from the old Negro baseball leagues,
now admitted to the Hall of Fame. Buck Leonard as
the photographer standpois, Johnny Bench is over with him, and
now Bill Freehan of Detroit. So we've got a National
League catcher and an American League catcher, and Buck Leonard cosses
this first pitch to Bill Freehand of the Detroit Tigers.

(25:00):
Freehand returns the ball to Leonard shakes his hands. Now
early win pros one big gus with Cleveland and Washington
won more than three hundred ball games, and the Chicago
White Sox, of course, i'll Lefty Gomez throws it out
to Johnny Bench, and our friend, colleague and companion, Sandy

(25:22):
Kofax will throw out the next. Dandy becsus cost to
Johnny Bench and the ceremonial first pitches are over at

(25:43):
home plate. Now Danny Murtau, and it's good to see
Danny back in baseball uniform. He says he misses it.
He retired because of ill health, but he's back to
manage this All Star game. Earl Weaver, the Baltimore Orioles
joining him, there talking with the umpires and the umpires tonight.
Stan Landis of the National League is seventeen years veteran
is calling balls and strikes for the third time in

(26:03):
his All Star career at first base in the third
All Star Game. Lou de Murro the American League down
at second base. Lee Wire the National League in his
second game. Jerry new Decker the American League in his
third game is the third base. Now along the left
field line. Jerry Dale of the National League is in
his first All Star Game and along the right field line,
also in his first All Star Game. Remember he used
to be a picture with Kansas City in New York.

(26:24):
Bill Kunkle, now an umpire with the American League, well
as Marta and Wea were talked with this staff of
six American and the National League umpires. Let's pause ten
seconds for station identification.

Speaker 4 (26:37):
This is WMAQ NBC in Chicago, currently seventy three degrees.
Now back to Atlanta.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
Hello again from Atlanta. This is Jim Simpson along with Sandykofax,
who is still autographing baseballs down in the commission's box.
But we'll join us or the play by play and
commentary on this All Star Game that you're hearing here
in the United States and around the world. Umpires now
being announced. And again, as the players of the National
League are about to take the field, let us again

(27:11):
point out this is the forty third the National League
lost last year, but holds an edge of five games
over the American League. They've won twenty three, lost eighteen,
and tied one game, a rain shortened game where they
went to the full nine innings to one to one tie
back in nineteen sixty one. Umpires, Uncle and Dy all
start down the lines. Lee Wire marches out the second

(27:33):
base landis against the clear away behind home plate the
line so that he can get a better look at
that ball crossing the plate. Gerry new Decker goes down
to third and Loudomiro the first and we'll continue with
more pregame highlights right after this message.

Speaker 4 (27:47):
Is that home, sweet home of yours ready for a
new lease on life? Does it need a paint job
upstairs or downstairs, inside or out?

Speaker 1 (27:55):
Well?

Speaker 4 (27:55):
If so, go on down to your independently owned Ace
Hardware store because they've got the paint for everything. More
flat paints, acrylic paints, enamels, varnishes.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
They also have the brushes, rollers, ladders, you name it.
If it's something to do with paint, Ace has it.

Speaker 4 (28:07):
Get your home and tiptop shape, and visit the store
that gives you the popular prices and a tremendous election
of merchandise, more values, and certainly more service. That's Ace Hardware,
the more store in the Chicago Land area.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Now back to the All Star Game. Here's Chicago's weather.

Speaker 4 (28:29):
Partly cloudy and cool, low tonite in the middle to
upper fifties. Wednesday sunny with a high in the upper
seventies lower near the lake. Wednesday night cloudy with a
chance of showers and a low in the upper fifties.
Thursday cloudy with a chance of rain at a high
temperature reading in the upper seventies. Probability of precipitation zero
percent Tonight twenty percent, Wednesday forty percent Wednesday night.

Speaker 1 (28:50):
One of the few artificially not artificially turf diamonds in
the National League. Most of them are artificially turf wears
over in the American League. Very few are the Chicago
artificial trip on the infield only Chief Nakahoma, who is
the man who prances around and does his war dance

(29:10):
every time a home runs hit here for the Atlanta
Braves is out dancing around the pitcher's mound now, and
of course he'll be out there hoping that Hank Aaron
it's won for the Braves in the National League tonight.
The back of the stitum, which is jam packed three
hundred and thirty feet down each foul line, the National
League now takes the field three hundred and seventy five
feet in the power aullision right and left center field,

(29:31):
and four hundred and two feet straight away. Everybody talks
about what a launching pad this is for home run.
Sandy Kofax can tell you a story that he tells
on himself. He was pitching here a line drive went
by his ear. It bounced off the wall beyond the
fence and came back in the playing field. By the
time Sandy turned around, he was streaming for someone to
field the ball. The ball got out of here so quickly.

(29:54):
By the time he turned around it had bounced back.
He didn't know it was a home run. Big Bob
Gibson of the Saint Louis Cardinals eleven consecutive wins now
warming up with the man who drew more votes than
anybody else. Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds. Johnny drew
one million, two hundred and twenty nine six seventy seven votes.
And by the way, the fans, who for the last

(30:14):
several years have been again the voters, the people who
select the starting squad for the All Star Team, this
year turned out in record numbers, more than three million.
We're glad to know that you're involved with the All
Star Game, and we hope you enjoy tonight's game wherever
you are. Defensively, as we have already set Gibson as
the pitcher and Bens the catcher, it is Lee May
of Houston at first base, Joe Morgan of Cincinnati at

(30:37):
second base, don Kessinger of the Chicago Cubs at shortstop,
Joe Torry of Saint Louis at third base, Willie Stargell
of the Pittsburgh Pirates and left field Willie Mays starting
over the injured Roberto Clementi. May's of the New York
Mets now out in center field, and Hank Aaron of
the Atlanta Braves and right field stepping in is Rob
Carew hitting at three to ozho one on the year,

(30:59):
caruw an All Star play and as we said, this
is his sixth All Star starting assignment is oh for
ten as yet to get a base hit in All
Star play. Gibson is ready and guess what gives him
the fastball and Keru tried to bun his way on
its foul off the third base line, picked up by
bench toss to Torrian, back to Gibson. Only Terry Moore
has gone oh for ten in as many games now.

(31:22):
Others have gone oh for ten. But then in that
game in which they're also over ten, they've gotten a
hit to make themselves one for eleven. But should Keru
go hitless in the night's appearance, he's going to set
an All Star record that he wished he didn't. Gibson ready,
Torrian on the grass, swings and misses at a slider
this time and it's quickly two strikes two. Rod Carew
on deck is Bobby mercer Off the New York Yankees,

(31:44):
naturally the American League and the traveling uniforms. They are
the visitors in Atlanta. Gibson is ready, comes back with
a fastball. It's foul out of play off to the left,
makes the seats down the left of the aligne keru
left tended batters stands deep in box, crouches over, and
a slider missus low and in around the knees. It's

(32:05):
one ball, two strikes. Gibson, as we said, pitched last
on Friday nine innings, defeated Atlanta. Drive that is over
the glove may picked up by Morgan. Gibson covers and
a fine play true is out. Lea made charged us
right off the bag, but it was a looping drive

(32:27):
that fell in front of Joe Morgan, who was coming
toward first base from his position at second, and Gibson,
one of the finest athletes in the game, was quickly
over there to cover and had Karou by a couple
of steps. Here's Bobby Mercer hitting at two eighty one
on the AAR fourteen oh runs forty five. RBIs the
lone Yankee representative lieutenant hitter with the crouch. Pops the
first one up bench very casually by the plate, tosses

(32:50):
aside his mask and now cracks it down and one
hands the foul papa A. Mercer goes for the first
pitch now Reggie Jackson two fifty two out in the year,
but eighteen horm runs fifty seven RBIs. Dick Allen leads

(33:11):
with twenty two in the American League, Norm Cash, Mike Epstein,
Reggie Jackson, they're all behind him with eighteen. Jackson hit
that mammoth home run remember in Detroit last year in
the All Star Game. Came off DC Evins deep in
the upper deck and this is a drive out to
right field.

Speaker 5 (33:28):
Aaron is on his way back.

Speaker 1 (33:29):
To the warning track and looks up at his off
the fence. Jackson on his way around first, then steams
in the second, hitting the first pitch for a double
off the mark, just to the left side of the
three seventy five mark Oh Jackson took dead aim And
here comes a fellow that has faced Dick, Bob Gibson
many times before and has even been on the same

(33:50):
team with him. Talking about Dick Allen, three hundred is
average this year with the Chicago White Sox, and he
leaves the American League with twenty two home runs and
sixty six RBIs, and he got more votes than anybody
else in the American League. Right handed batter, but has
great power to all fields, and they play him straight
away in deep hind inside to him and Bob Gibson

(34:13):
says hello to Dick Allen with a pitch under the chin.
Jackson down at second base to two out on the
top of the first. There is no score. This one
is a slider that catches the outside corner for the
ease on ball, one strike. Gibson has yet to change
to anybody. Bob is out there and simply throwing hard
to the batteries. We got Carew and Mercer easily. Jackson

(34:33):
hit him for a double ground ball chance for Morgan
at second base. Second Big Hop goes on the first
base and has it pall. No runs, one hit in
the American League first, no errors, one man left. We
go to the last of the first. There's no score
on this forty third Annual All Star Game.

Speaker 6 (34:48):
When I say maid in Detroit, what do you think
of automobiles? What car companies? Can you think of?

Speaker 1 (34:54):
GM? Christ Board?

Speaker 6 (34:56):
When I say engineering, which of those companies do you
think of?

Speaker 1 (34:59):
GM?

Speaker 6 (35:00):
Do you know what company came up with the first
fluid drive? I'm sure I'm intended to say Chrysler, right.
Do you know what company first offered power steering?

Speaker 1 (35:08):
Chrysler?

Speaker 6 (35:09):
Uh huh? Now do you know the first company to
use torch and bar suspension in all its cars, also Chrysler.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
I'm picking up a pattern here.

Speaker 6 (35:19):
What I'm trying to prove, what you're proving for me,
is of course that when I say engineering, now, which
one of those car companies do you think of? Now?

Speaker 1 (35:27):
I would say Chrysler, which.

Speaker 6 (35:29):
Is actually too which is what most people do. Say,
your body.

Speaker 1 (35:34):
When I think of Chrysler, it's it's the engineering that
I think of when.

Speaker 7 (35:37):
You mentioned Chrysler. It's extra care and engineering. The nineteen
seventy two cars of the Chrysler Corporation, Chrysler, Plymouth and.

Speaker 6 (35:44):
Dodge, and you take extra care to buckle up U
seed and shoulder belts.

Speaker 1 (35:51):
And Atlanta, Georgia for the bottom half of the first
inning of this All Star Baseball game, Jim Simpson and
welcome Sandy. And honestly, I can say it in front
of all people, it was a thrill for me to
see you toss out one of those first balls and
realize you're going in on the Hall of Fame next month.

Speaker 8 (36:05):
Then, Jim, thank you very much. It's a thrill for me,
but it sort of makes you feel like an old timer.
And in the clubhouse, I saw some people I've played with.
I didn't feel that old throw he at a first ball.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
I don't know.

Speaker 8 (36:16):
It's a great honor. It's a great thrill. Just being
at the All Star Game is a thrill.

Speaker 1 (36:20):
All right. Here's Joe Morgan of Cincinnati. Leads the league
and the majors for that matter, and run scored with
eighty one and walks with seventy three. Is also stolen
thirty six bases. What the leadoff man he is for
the Cincinnati Reds. Jim Palmer a Baltimore throws hide of
moregon ball one. Palmers record thirteen and four on the year.
Lee May's will follow, then Hank Aaron Botting clean up
as stargule bench is the five hitter, Lee May, six,

(36:43):
Joe Troy, the seven hitter, Don Kessinger, and Bob Gibson.
There's a strike at the letters one ball, one strike. Defensively,
Allen is at first, threw with second, Richard short, Robinson third,
the strepskin left, Bobby Mercer and center Jackson and Wright
free hand behind the plate on Palmer throws and that's
ball too, two ball strike.

Speaker 8 (37:01):
You know, I think it's interesting to me that the
All Star game has taken on a new complexion. For years,
it seemed like it was just an exhibition game, the
best players in baseball, both leagues.

Speaker 1 (37:09):
Wanting to win, but nobody really out there that hard
I thought.

Speaker 8 (37:15):
But this year, all of a sudden, it looks like
both teams want to win very badly, and it's a
different situation, a different feeling.

Speaker 1 (37:23):
Right two to Morgan and Palmer is ready again. It's
two balls, two strikes, spous This one off the fist
set out of Pudd waiting on deck is a fellow
that he did not expect to start. But what a
World Series career, or I should say All Star and
World Series career for that matter. Willie Mays has had
more about that. When Willie steps said no score, last
of the first count of two and two to Morgan,

(37:43):
left handed hitter and hits this one off the fists
free had turns around the look, but it's going to
hit up on the screen and drop down to some
fans below in back of first pits Hot Muggy Night
had a thunderstorm in the area about six o'clock. Another
one expected about non Ocock. That is eastern daylight time
in the United States. Two balls, two strikes. Palmer big

(38:06):
right andw throws a slider that stays up high. It's
three and two. Jim has struck out one hundred and three,
walked thirty seven, is earned run average one point nine
to two. Back with the three to two pitch lined
a deep center field, Bobby Mercer goes back a few
steps back for the warning crack and takes it for
the first half. That'll bring up Willie Mays in his

(38:34):
twenty third All Star Game. Only Sam Musical has more
with twenty four. What about Willie? Most advant's an All
Star Games seventy two, most runs score twenty most hits
twenty three, most stolen bases six, you name it, and
Willie's done. It hits the first pitch, pops it up
off to the right side, three hand over to the
commissioner's box, and foul territory. But it makes it in

(38:56):
the seat. Strike one to what he made.

Speaker 8 (39:00):
Talk about whether or not the players willing to be here. Willie,
who's twenty third one this year. Talking to him before
the game, he said, I could have had three days
off because I was a little tired. He says, but
this is the biggest thrill of the year to me,
He says, I just love coming to the All Star Game,
love to be here, love to play at it. And
you watch him play, you can tell he's having a
good time.

Speaker 1 (39:18):
Breaking pitch high bouncer Robinson takes it at third base
and has plenty of time to throw out what he
mays two down and the National League person in the
totals game, Hayes, was up there swinging, and here comes
Hank Rain, aaron, right handed batter, six hundred and fifty

(39:41):
nine home runs, tied with Babe Ruth for the most
home runs ever hit for one man with a single
ball club, and of course Ruth went on to hit
a total of seven hundred and fourteen. Aaron needs fifty
six more to beat that s twenty this year. It's
on the outside corner strike from Palmer, and of course
Hank has more than two thousand career RBIs most of

(40:01):
the National League and second only again the Babe Ruth.
One strike to hek rowd wants him to hit one.
A big lollipop slow curve comes up, and this is
this one and one.

Speaker 8 (40:11):
Given for all that all the records that Heck has set,
he's never really had the good All Star Game. He
had a home run last year in Detroit, but his
All Star record has never been as good as he'd
like it to be.

Speaker 1 (40:21):
Fastball has him swinging strike two. His home run in
Detroit last year was his first All Star home run,
and he's only hitting one eighty two in All Star play.
And this is his fifteenth start, his twenty first game basketball,
and he's caught looking strike out for Palmer Moron's hits.
The aras are gone through one inning. American League nothing,

(40:42):
National League nothing. I'm Kyle Roade.

Speaker 9 (40:46):
Last year during the World Series, I helped introduce you
to the amazing two bladed razor from Gellette, the Track two.
Since then, over three million men have made the Track
two the most successful new razor in history. Why because
Gellette discovered an entwo harly new shaving principle. Then no
one blade razor can duplicate. Even if you shaved twice
took two strokes instead of one, your one blade razor

(41:07):
just can't shave you like the two bladed Tract two.
You try, it beats any one blade razor ever made.
If you think Firestone's new Radio V one tire gives
you forty thousand miles or more.

Speaker 1 (41:20):
You're right.

Speaker 9 (41:21):
If you think the Radio V one rides rough like
some other radios, you're wrong. Radio V one will give
you a really comfortable ride. Firestone is so sure they'll
give you seven days to test right it. If you
don't like the way it handles or rides, you get
your old tires and your money back. The forty thousand
mile Radio V one another people tire from Firestone.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
Well, we've been talking an awful lot about baseball in
the All Star Game. Let's talk about where we are.
We are in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, which yesterday
is celebrated it's one and twenty fifth versary, and they
had a giant take downtown and a great crowd on
hand to celebrate this anniversary. Bob, this great seven city
in the United States, and they've already flashed on the

(42:10):
board that fifty three and seven have paid their way
in here this evening to watch this All Star Game.
And that is the largest baseball crowd in Atlanta history.
Bob Gibson has completed his warm ups. When a scoreless game,
DARCOA League has one hit. Reggie Jackson's double deep off
the wall in right center field National League has none.
Carlis Streempsky will leave it off. Stempski hitting at two

(42:31):
to eighty one. This is his eighth consecutive All Star game.
His mind call together one home run, remember that was
last Saturday, his first since last September. The third left
tended better and swings on the first pitch. Morgan there
at second base. It's plenty of time to flip to
Lee May and there's one up him.

Speaker 8 (42:50):
And we're getting a little action now in the National
League Bullfit. It looks like Steve Blast up and throwing,
is going to replace Bob Gibson next inning. And I
think that's what Gibbson meant when he said he didn't
really want to start the game. Most years, the starters
will go three innings. Danny Murta this year the manager
not managing any club. He's decided no pitcher will go
over too.

Speaker 1 (43:09):
Well. Here's Bobby Grich, whose selection takes a high pitch
from Gibson. Some consternation. You heard Tony talk before the game,
camp to Campanairas, very upset, does not want to play.
Rich and Baltimore selected over Kampaniras after Apparatio came up
with a fractioned finger. Second pitch from Gibson catched the

(43:29):
corner at the knees and it's one ball, one strike
to Grich, right handed. Better crouches. He's going to be
a star, I mean a real star, and that accidentally
felled off to the right. Checked his swing ball, hit
the bat and bounced near the commission's box, picked up
by Bob Lemon, manager of the Kansas City Royals and
coaching at first BIS an All Star career. He had
one ball, two strikes to Grich. As we begin the

(43:52):
second breaking pitch, it has hit high in the air
and off third base. Comes Joe Tory in foul territory,
moving Dick Williams out of the bows fox and takes
us for coaching box and takes it for the second half. Sandy,
I don't know about you, but it looks pretty dark
up there to me. You've had that one thunderstorm and

(44:13):
it doesn't look that good. Let's hope. Here's Brooks Robinson,
right handed batter, and look out, it's high and inside
to him from Gibson. Robinson in his sixteenth All Star Game,
hitting two fifty eighth this year with four home runs.
Gibson the fast workers right back with a fastball, high bounder.
Tory has to wait for it to come down, throws on. Robinson,
not the fastest, chugs down the first and he has

(44:35):
thrown out. And for the moment Lee may forgot that
Gibson got him one, two, three, Ron fits the aras
none left. We go to the last of the second
American League. Nothing, National League. Nothing.

Speaker 10 (44:45):
I think, unless you're reel on the air, it's got
to show through. I think the person who is a
pretender had better change his pretense. It's like Abe wink
and one says, don't be a liar unless you have
a great memory. And I love conversation with people.

Speaker 1 (45:02):
I learned from.

Speaker 10 (45:02):
People as much as I learned from the erudite writers
of our fourth Estate. I believe that I learned as
much from the taxicab driver who brushes next to society
all day long. I like to talk to women who
have problems not only in their marital status, but how
do you maintain the budget in these days of inflationary prices.

(45:24):
So I learned from people as much as I learned
from writers more experienced.

Speaker 11 (45:28):
Get acquainted with Howard Miller and mornings from six to
ten right here on WMAQ.

Speaker 1 (45:46):
Well jumps up to the Sandy Kofax the last of
the second inning and Jim Palmer or would anybody be
out of the woods against these kind of hitters, Sandy Willis, Stargo,
Johnny Bench, and Lee May, all of them can hit
it out of here in Nevado City. I think that's
the toughest part of pitching an All Star Game.

Speaker 8 (46:02):
In most lineups, you get past the fifty six hitter
and you know that well, they're not going to hit
it out that often. Maybe there's two or three home
runs by this time of the year for the seventh
and eighth hitter. But in this kind of lineup, everybody
can hit the long ball, and you make one wrong
pitch to slip once and all of a sudden.

Speaker 1 (46:17):
You're down a run. Stargel, the big left handed hitter
nineteen home run sixty eight RB eyes and he gets
a breaking pitch look like a slotter that drops over
strike one. They play him around to the right and
they play him deep. Will He stands deep, high fastball,
one ball, one strike, big left handed bout him. We're

(46:41):
in the last of the second, no score. Stargel a
beat off Maine with the one ball, one strike count.
This fastball Missigan sodom hives two balls, one s fright,
Willy Starger one for hitting home runs, RB Eyes he's
working sickle cell anemia and in drug abuse program. It's
quite a man high fastball from Palmer, a little upset

(47:02):
with himself as he walks off as he's behind three
and one. The stargu and waiting on deck is Johnny Bench. Palmer,
like Gibson, a pretty fast worker, is back with a fastball,
and look out, his bat may have gotten a photographer somebody.
I guess it went over Bench's head and the on
deck circle. It's a hot, humid, muggy night. So what

(47:24):
imidiately goes for the pine tar rag as he took
a vicious swing and the batman farther than the ball
which only traveled to Bill Freehan's myth Three balls, two strikes. Now.
The last time that Palmer had a three two count
was on Joe Morgan, who does have some power, and
little Joe hid a deep to center field on a
three to two pitch. It was a fastball. Let's see
what Palmer throws Willy Stargel on free two high fastball

(47:48):
and walks in him first base runner for the National League.
And here's Johnny Bench in his spot All Star Game. Johnny,
with those twenty four home runs and seventy two RBIs
leads the majors and Bench hit two home runs on
July the twelfth, but in the last ten games since

(48:11):
during the regular National League season, Bench has not hit
a home run. And awesome being made here that Johnny
drew more votes than anybody else one du two on
twenty nine thousand, six seventy seven, and for that honor
he receives a special reward our runs, one hit, no

(48:31):
errors for the American no runs, no hits, no errors
for the National But Woody stargel, mad knees and all
he'll not be running is down at first base that
Allen is holding and is the first pitch ground ball
up the middle behind second basis. Keru steps on second,
goes on the first and the quick double play.

Speaker 8 (48:48):
And with Peru playing bench to pull right behind second base,
it was a very easy double play right over the
bag as he caught the ball, stepped on and through
the first And those are the guy that usually you'd
like to see hit to the short step because it's
that easy for the short step coming across the bag.

Speaker 1 (49:02):
But there it didn't make a bit of difference. Lee
May now with Houston, hitting a two eighty seven long
time with Cincinnati Reds twenty home run sixty two RBIs.
He takes a cut at the first pitch and missus.
It's strike one. May for the first time started with
a National League. What a trade that was. He pays
your money and it takes your choice. Will Morgan doing

(49:25):
a great job for Cincinnati. Lee May doing a great
job for Houston. Another swinging foul tip, this time that
rides back into the stands behind home playing two strikes
to May, Palm are let off the sitting by walking.
Stargo got Vence to hit the first pitch to ground
on the double play and now is ahead of Lee May.
Oh and two. Joe Tory of the Cardinals waits on
day Mom already and throws the breaking pitch. It's down

(49:48):
in the dirt, ball one, playing May straight away. He
has great power to all fields back again this breaking pitch.
Really they got away from Palmer. You could see that
he began to release the ball sandy, and they did
well about four or five feet to the right of
the place.

Speaker 8 (50:07):
She didn't look like Palmer might be working on his
change out, but you don't think of the All Star
Game as a place to experiment. But he's thrown Lee
three change ups in this series of pitching, just to
one fastball at first pitch of the change up. It
looked like those two were change ups. Also, if you
don't get them down, you're in trouble. So possibly a
little too low.

Speaker 1 (50:24):
Breaking pitch stays outside from a little harder. Looked like
a slaughter. Three balls, two strikes. Well here he is
again a three and two. He got Morgan on a
three to two county walk. Scar Jold throws a breaking
pitch line right base hit, although the Shruts got Rich's head.
Delibaya Stremskin left field, and Lee May has the first
National League base hit hel Joe Tory for many years,

(50:48):
remember the amount of raids. More recently with the Saint
Louis Cardinals who changed in from a catcher to a
first basement and now to a third baseman, and Tory
lost viable player last year hitting three h two this
year ten home runs fifty one RBIs great student of
hitting lost. All that weight has great risk. Weights on
the pitch a lot and can hit the ball and

(51:09):
with power to all fields. Strike when Palmer it's interesting.
Lee May continues to hit the Baltimore pitching staff. I
think he was the only Cincinnati read in the seventies
series who had any luck at all. And here he
is tonight. He walks up against Palmer and hits the
line drive, swinging a miss by Tory, hits two strikes. Well,
talking about that Sandy, and he did a good thing here.

(51:30):
He hit the ball away from Brooks Robinson. That was
the year in which Brooks took everything away from Cincinnati.
I think Cincinnati learned that in that series. Two out,
no score, last of the second, Lee May on the
first base and Tory is behind as May was owing
to to Palmer, big curve and he just gets a

(51:50):
piece of and fouls to the screen. Two strikes. I'm
sure Jim not too happy with that curve ball. He
hung it, got it up high and got away with it,
and love to have it back. Getting to notice what
you put it out, saidy. Palmer is not throwing that
fastball too often. Here he comes in with it and
he went around swinging. Tory try to check up and

(52:12):
it's strike free swinging, so Palmer has a second strikeout,
no runs, one hit, no errors, one man left at
the end of two, there's no score, and there's forty
third Annual All Star Game.

Speaker 4 (52:22):
Been down to your race hardware store recently, Well to
make your do it yourself, George down here.

Speaker 1 (52:27):
And then I'd get on the air and blow my name.
Get acquainted with Jim Stagg.

Speaker 11 (52:32):
Evenings from eight to midnight on w MAQ, The Sound
of Chicago.

Speaker 1 (52:39):
We paused thirty seconds for station identification.

Speaker 4 (52:43):
This is WMAQ NBC in Chicago. Chicago's weather for cast
partly cloudy and cool, low tonight.

Speaker 12 (52:50):
In the fifties, if somebody was talking about radio performers
and they said a radio performer as an actor, I
don't believe that he said a person.

Speaker 1 (53:00):
He has to be a person. You can act. I
suppose and be a person. But for me, maybe I'm
different and maybe this isn't the way to do it.
But I try to be a person. I try to
be John Patrick, Francis Sheriff, and I tried to get
acquainted with hadn't share it.

Speaker 11 (53:15):
Midday from ten am to one pm here on wm AH,
The Sound of Chicago.

Speaker 1 (53:23):
Off against Steve Blast Bob Gibson. After two innings, retired.
He gave up one base hip of course, no run,
struck out nobody, and walked nobody. Last out of Canaan, Connecticut,
thirty years old, the hero of last year's World Series
eleven and four this year with the Pirates. Burnernovers two
point sixty three in his first All Star Game and
Steve was talking weeks ago. Thanks, Hey, I hope I'm selected.

(53:45):
I grew up watching the Cleveland Indians. I've only seen
the All Star Game on television. I'd like to be there. Well,
here he is ready to face Bill Free in the
third inning, and the first pitch is high. All on Tim.

Speaker 8 (53:56):
Bill is a good fastball. He's not overpowering, but it's
a good, live fastball. It moves well, and he has
good control. He throws a slider that he keeps outside
to the right hand hitters, and he's been very effective
since he acquired the good control with the Pirates. For
a few years, struggled a little bit with his ability
to throw the ball where he wanted to do. As
soon as he was able to do that, he became

(54:18):
a very effective pitcher.

Speaker 1 (54:20):
Last's second pitch was a slider outside back quickly with
another breaking pitch outside, and he has gone three and
oh on Bill free Hand. As soon as I talk
about his control, he has a little trouble. Gave the
ball over. Well, you got to know Sandy. He knows
he's in his first All Star Game and that the
world is watching here. He comes back with the three
and oh pitch and its way outside, gets away from
bench and actually bounds back onto the playing field. Lee

(54:42):
May will have to pick it up. So on four pitches,
Freehand draws the walk off. Steve Blasts and Jim Palmer
he is going to pitch a National League third inning
because he is coming up.

Speaker 8 (54:54):
To hit or perhaps a bunch. Well, Jim is a
good hitter. He's been used Iro Weaver for Baltimore many
times to fitch hit. But in this situation, I don't
think you figure you're gonna score too many runs in
an All Star Game. So I would think Jim's up
there to bun. So does Joe Tory.

Speaker 1 (55:11):
He is well on the grass from third base, May
holding on to free Hand, who has not great speed
at first base. Ar'm a right handed hitter, as he
is a pitcher Blast now pitching from the stretch, of course,
looks and throws, and there's the bun up the first
base line. May has to go to first base where
Morgan is there, and the sacrifice bun is completed as
free Hand slides into second. Kim and I wonder if

(55:32):
from here on in the National League pitchers are only
going to go one inning each.

Speaker 8 (55:35):
Don Sutton now up throwing in the National League bull
then getting ready as if he were going to pitch
the next inning.

Speaker 1 (55:42):
Here is Rod carew oh for eleven in All Star play,
try to drag bunt his way on and with that
in Montory is still at the edge of the grass
at third base. Crew of course, left handed hitter been
the rookie of the Year's been an American League batting champion,
got a good lifetime average of better than three hundred takes.
Ball one outside from Steve blasts no score in the

(56:07):
American League third there's been no real threat fastball over.
It's strike one one ball one strikes. The American League
has had Jackson as far as second base on his
double in the first, and now free Hat as far
as second on the walk and the sacrifice fun last
League has only gotten men as far as first base.

(56:27):
Last looking back now throws a big curve. It's in
the dirt and bench short hops it takes it out
and it's two balls, one strike. Last ready throws again,
breaking pitch up the middle. Base hit free hand. On

(56:49):
his way around third base, incomes twenty Mace picks up,
guns the ball home. Here comes free end Bay, it's weight.
He slides in safe. The ball gets away backed up
by Last. It's one to nothing the American League as
Keru gets his first All Star hit and drives in
the first run of the nineteen seventy two games in freehand.

Speaker 8 (57:13):
Who doesn't have that good speed, but he get a
break on that ball. The balls hit right back through
the middle. As soon as he got past the pitcher,
he knew the ball was the base hit. If the
balls hit the other part of the field, he has
to wait a little bit longer just to make sure
he gets through the infield, and in this case he
didn't have to un scored. It was going to be
a little bit close, but I think May's had a
little problem getting the ball out of his glove.

Speaker 1 (57:34):
Bobby Mercer, who swung at the first pitch, and fouled
out of the catchers up swinging at the first pitch again,
it is grabbed just off the ground by May, who
crawls the first base for the double play. W ad
not happened past line ride and May, who caught it
a foot off the ground on his knees, crawled the
first base and Peru is an easy out on the
double up and one run scores on one base hit,

(57:54):
no Arazon, none left. We go to the last of
the third. The American League leads the National League one
to nothing.

Speaker 9 (58:00):
If you think Firestone's new Radio V one tire gives
you forty thousand miles or more, you're right. If you
think the Radio V one rides rough like some other radios,
you're wrong. Radio V one will give you a really
comfortable ride. Firestone is so sure they'll give you seven
days to test right it. If you don't like the

(58:21):
way it handles the rides, you get your old tires
and your money back. The forty thousand mile Radio V
one another people tire from Firestone.

Speaker 11 (58:32):
Nothing can the.

Speaker 1 (58:34):
Turtles back pay, Nothing can crack the turtle back.

Speaker 13 (58:38):
Come detergent greased salt, whether turtle wax comes through because
nothing comes through the Turtle's hard show finish, shine your
card off blinding brilliance in twenty five minutes with turtle.

Speaker 1 (58:48):
Wax, turn turtle, turtle, sack.

Speaker 13 (58:54):
Turtle wax in liquid or paste. Anything else is mock turtle.

Speaker 1 (59:06):
In Atlanta, where the Braves fans and therefore National League fans,
are understandably a little shocked that their team with a
great eight man squad and that starting lineup has fallen
behind the American League and Jim Palmer wanted nothing. Don
Kessinger to seventy five hitter, a switch hitter batting left handed,
of course, against Jim Palmer, is the batter. Casssinger is
on a nine game regular season streak, hitting at a

(59:28):
four hundred average over that space and is a fastball
at as him moving away and it's ball one.

Speaker 8 (59:35):
Him in action now in the American League bullpen, and
it looks like the round left hander of the Tigers, Micky.

Speaker 1 (59:42):
Lolitch, who wanted to start seventeen game winner. This pitch
from Palmer knicks the outside corner fastball one ball one
strike to Kessinger breaking pitches outside ball too on deck.
It looks like it is Glenn Becker Cassinger's mate the
Chicago Cup second baseman, who's going to back for the pitcher?

(01:00:02):
Steve Blast two balls, one strikes, wins at a high
past ball, fouls it off the screen. It's two and two.
Jim Mickey lowis wanting to start.

Speaker 8 (01:00:11):
Is a tough position for Earl Weaver if you're in
a pennant race and your contenders like Detroit and Baltimore.

Speaker 1 (01:00:17):
If Weaver were to start Lolich, he is.

Speaker 8 (01:00:20):
Open for criticism by the Detroit fans people that he
started the opposition pitcher hoping that he couldn't pitch again
maybe on Thursday.

Speaker 1 (01:00:27):
So I think Weaver did what he thought was right
by starting his pitcher. Fly ball left field, and Yastremsky
has to back on it. Kessinger's showing him a little
bit more power to the opposite field and what he expected.
Although it was not hit very deeply. Messinger is out,
and here is Glenn Becker. Becker to the Chicago Cubs,
hitting at two seventy three, three home runs, twenty four

(01:00:48):
rvis and many times has been an All Star second
baseman himself. Beckert the pride of Alleghany College outside of
Pittsburgh comes where he was all everything in basketball and baseball.
Falmer throws him a breaking pitch outside. It's ball one
one run, two hits, no errors for the American League,

(01:01:10):
no runs, one hit, no errors for the National League.
Palmer Ready throws a fastball, get out to the right field,
Jackson over Mercer over. Jackson takes it in there. Two outs.
That'll bring up Joe Morgan, who worked the count of
three to two in the first inning, and then lace
the ball deep to center field if Mercer caught on

(01:01:31):
the line. Steve blast who always wanted to be an
All Star Game and made it at age thirty, worked
one inning, gave us one run, one hit, and walk one.
Two out, and the last of the third, Palmer Ready
throws a fastball that's right at the waist of Joe
Morgan on the inside corner. Strike one, Farmer, as we said,

(01:01:53):
very fast worker. This one hits in the dirt alongside
the plate. Ball one. San Lando steps out, the dust
off the plate and Joe Morgan goes back to get
some pine tar for his hands. Willie Mays waits on
deck on a hot, humid night in Atlanta, Georgia, with
fifty three seven looking on here and more than six

(01:02:15):
hundred stations around the world listening to us. Morgan foules
this one off back of home plate again, but this
time well back in the seats. One ball, two strikes,
and we're sant and I look just off the first
base side of home plate. We're looking at Jim Palmer, Baltimore,
Bobby Gritch of Baltimore, and Brooks Robinson of Baltimore. Change

(01:02:36):
on this one, laced down the line. It is foul
down the right field arve. Joe Morgan picked on one
of those Palmer change ups, Sandy and almost got it. Hugain.

Speaker 8 (01:02:47):
Palmer got the off speed pitch up high, and most
of the time with the slow pitch, the off speed pitch,
any kind of change of speed, you've got to keep
the ball down. When it's up like that, the batter
gets too good a look at it.

Speaker 1 (01:03:01):
This one another off speed fitch miss is outside. It's
two and two. The Morganson, Afrey show, Otis Sinhara, all selected,
all not here because of injuries. And there's a ball
hit out to left centerfield. Is French. Sky's over waits
and has it for the third out. So Palmer goes
a very effective three innings. He just gave up one

(01:03:22):
hit and walk one and he is through. And this
third inning the runs hits, the eras none left. They've
gone through three innings of the American League leads the
National wand and up it.

Speaker 6 (01:03:31):
Mike Moyer, wehead Mike Moyer. The dryer, Woizuka, wehead Roizuka,
The dry.

Speaker 14 (01:03:41):
Look, Dry look, Aosol hair control. You look so much better,
you won't believe your ears. The webhead is dead. And
the dry loop from Gellette did it. More men use
it than any other aerosol. Charlie Meiesmer the dryler, the
dry Look from Gellette.

Speaker 7 (01:04:03):
Nineteen forty three, the year Gillette sponsored their first All
Star Game, The year the blue blade was the best
thing in shaving.

Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
A lot of things have changed since then.

Speaker 7 (01:04:13):
Some haven't, because Gillette still makes the leading double edge.
Today it's the Platinum Plus blade with an edge so
smooth you can actually feel the difference. Platinum Plus from Gillette.
We made the first blade and we're still the first blade.

Speaker 1 (01:04:32):
Changing star came well, Don Sutton, the Dodgers has come
on fine, earned one average one point nine, are always
one twelve and lost five And what am I doing
sitting here talking about Don Sutton, when Sandy Kovac, ex
of the Dodgers, knows all about Don Jim Dunn.

Speaker 8 (01:04:48):
Satton came up to the Dodgers quite a few years ago,
I believe it was about seven years now, and came
up with a fine curveball and good fastball, and everybody
talks so much about his curveball. He became a curveball
pitcher in forgot about the fastball and then did not
have as much success for a few years as he
did early, and all of a sudden this year he's
gone back to the fastball, using it more often. He

(01:05:10):
has done a great job and also came up with
a screwball, which he learned from Jim Brewer, the left
hander and the Dodger bullpen, and it's helped him quite
a bit. And he's a complete pitcher, but again not overpower.
He's the kind of fellow has to have good control
and does most of the time. While Sutton, the man
he will face first is Reggie Jackson. With the first
pitch he saw from the starter Bob Gibson, and lace

(01:05:31):
the double the right center field Jackson deep in the box,
left handed hitter, lots of power, eighteen horme runs on
the year with those fifty seven RBIs Sutton ready to
throw throws a fastball way high ball one well after
three innings in an All Star game, you can make
all kinds of changes.

Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
The starters who've been voted the must play the first three.
There have been no changes in the defensive lineup for
the National League, only the pitcher. And Jackson has a
second base hit as a line drive drops in front
of Aaron out on right.

Speaker 8 (01:05:59):
Field, and Reggie Jackson seems to be a pretty fair
All Star player last year. One at bat as a
pinch hitter hit that towering home run in Detroit, and
here tonight two for two.

Speaker 1 (01:06:09):
Already, Here is Dick Allen rounded to Morgan at second
base to end the first inning with Jackson down at second.
Now he comes up with Jackson on at first and
none out, and this time facing Sutton, and of course
Allen was a teammate of Sutton's last year. Ground Ball
Tory waits for the third base, goes down to second base.
Theres one and that's all that they can get is

(01:06:29):
Alan hustles down and is safe at first base. Jackson
erased on the feelers choice that'll bring up Karl Yastremsky.
Carl came up swinging in the second inning and swung
it the first pitch and grounded back to Morgan. Speaking
of Jim Palmer, who worked those three shortest innings in

(01:06:51):
All Star Game history, Now Palmer has worked eight innings,
surrendered three hits and no runs. Pretty good record for
that young man. Here is Sutton bring a breaking pitch, Yostremski,
that's too low. Ball on two.

Speaker 8 (01:07:02):
I think a pitcher like Jim Palmer, who does have
the overpowering kind of stuff a great fastball, throws very hard.
I think he has an advantage in an All Star Game.
He doesn't have to know the hitters as well.

Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
Fastball deep to right field, Aaron goes back, Mays goes back,
Mays is there and makes the catch right at the
wall about three hundred and seventy five feet away. Allen
hustles back to the first.

Speaker 8 (01:07:24):
Ken Yastevsky must not have gotten that as well as
it looks, because this ballpark is a good hitters ballpark.
The ball carries very well and usually jumps out of here.
And when Carl hit the ball, I thought it had
to go out, but it didn't even get very deep
on the warning track.

Speaker 1 (01:07:40):
Here's Bobby Gritch. He foul to Tory. Two out. Now
and the American League fourth they leaded one to nothing.
Sutton of the Dodgers is the third National League pitcher
goes a fastball. This one has popped up and back
toward us. Gibson started where two innings, Blast came on
and gave up the only run of the ball game,
And now Sutton started this fourth and a. The American

(01:08:05):
League has seen nothing but right handers Gibson, Glass and
now Sutton. Wolitch, a left hander scheduled to come on
for the American League. In the Nation League fourth breaking pitch,
it's too low. Ball one, one ball, one strikes Bobby Gritch.

(01:08:29):
Now checking at first base is Sutton. The calendar not
strayed very far. One and one toy moves back a
couple of steps at third base. Sutton throws a fastball
outside bench, whipped down the first base, and Allen just
slide back. Well, there's that arm that enhances the overall

(01:08:52):
value of bench. He can hit, but he's some kind
of catcher and thrower. Two balls, one strike Grich, and
now again they're checking on Allen over at first base. Nick,
known for his hitting and his power, has stilen ten
bases this year. Her ball.

Speaker 6 (01:09:15):
Gets over.

Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
It's two balls, two strikes, two and two. Allen leading
off at first base on this muggy night in Atlanta.
Sudden takes a look at him and comes in with
a fastball at his strike free call, and Gritz has

(01:09:38):
to take a seat. Now runs one hit, no errors,
and Dick Allen left at first base. We go to
the last of the fourth still the American League. One
in the National League.

Speaker 7 (01:09:45):
Nothing a dimmer switch being tested two hundred thousand times.
A little thing, a dimmer switch. But the Chrysler Corporation
takes care to make certain.

Speaker 1 (01:10:00):
The little things on their cars work. Extra care and engineering.

Speaker 7 (01:10:06):
And big things like electronic ignition proved in a million
miles of street and highway driving, like the Unibody construction
with four thousand wells, like the gigantic wind tunnels, the
test engine cooler so you won't be left running hot,
like the typhoon test so you won't be left wet.

(01:10:31):
Extra care and engineering from the Chrysler Corporation.

Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
We want you to be happy with your Dodge.

Speaker 7 (01:10:37):
Chrysler or Plymouth from the day you buy it until
the day you buy your next one.

Speaker 1 (01:10:44):
For you take extra care to buckle up. In the
nationally court. The schedule batters amaze aeronam stragel. Defensively for
the American leg, everybody's the same element first through a second, Bridge, short, Robinson, third,
the Stempsky, left, Mercer and center Jackson and Wright three.
Hamm the catcher, but his battery mate Mickey Lolitch will

(01:11:07):
be on the mound. Lolitch is seventeen and six on
the year, seventeen and six with half the season to go.
Arn run average two point three nine jivin what a
great arm.

Speaker 8 (01:11:17):
Mickey has a good fastball, good control with it, throws
two kinds of fastballs, the sinking fastball, one that rides,
good curveball, good slider and gets them all over.

Speaker 5 (01:11:28):
And a very durable kind of arm.

Speaker 8 (01:11:30):
Seems like he rarely gets tired, complete ball games, and
just a very valuable pitcher to have on your ball club.

Speaker 1 (01:11:37):
And he told Earld Weaver, I should be starting this game,
but he's not. He's out there now in the face
William Ayes, who bounced off to the Brooks Robinson back
in the first inning. Ay, he's replacing the injured Clemetti
hurt his knee in Sunny's game. First pitch is a
strike to mas Dude. All fess fairness to Mickey. I
believe he said that either he or gay Lord Perry

(01:11:58):
should be starting this game. It was just for Mickey
loledge back with the pitch that sinks into the dirt.
Its ball one stripe one American League Rod Crew with
his first All Star hit ever after ten hitless trips
to the plate, drove in Bill freehand. That's the only run.
American League one run, three hits, no errors, and Nash
League no runs, one hit and no errors. May's fouls
this one back. The only base hit for the National

(01:12:21):
League was Lee May's single in the second inning. Hank
Aaron kneels on deck one ball, two stripes to Willie
Mays in his twenty third All Star Game. Lawl it's
ready and comes back with the pitch at May's goes
around on foul, tips it off the screen. Didn't get

(01:12:47):
much of that ball at all. Red shandeans to the
Cardinals coaching down at first. He's the manager of Saint Louis.
Charlie Fox coaching at third the manager of the San
Francisco Giants, Lulach, ready, we have tender throws, and May's
has to do a little two step to get out

(01:13:08):
of the way and winds up in the dirt. All
thrown lowing around his knees and Willie jumped over it
and fell in the dirt. Two and two. I knew
something was strange about Willie. Sandy. It's to see Ets
written across the front of his blouse instead of Giants.
I remember the New York Mets. Lola's ready on the

(01:13:29):
two to two count throws and it's missing three balls.
Two strikes were out here. Atlanta comes alive. They would
like to see that National League gets started. This is
a National League town. Nolitches, Sandy said, gets the ball
over tries this time man, it is balve tip strike three.

(01:13:51):
I think he got part of it. And theny event
it is strike three and Mays sits down, the third
Mashion leaguer to strike out, as Farmer struck out too.
The roar of courses for Hank. Aaron, the sand and
I were talking as the inning ended. In the first
Hank took a pretty good looking fastball for a third

(01:14:14):
call strike three and the Sandy said Hank, not knowing
the pitchers, was probably guessing curveball and saw the fastball
and struck out up for the second time, this time
facing a left tender, and the ball is in the
third ball one the erin Jim.

Speaker 8 (01:14:26):
I think a lot of people talk about the pitchers
having to know the hitters and doing this or doing that,
or trying to pitch a certain way. But all your
good hitters know the pitchers, and they know what they
throw and know what they throw in certain situations.

Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
And you're right.

Speaker 8 (01:14:38):
I think that first time up, Henry just looking for
the curveball with two strikes and didn't get it. Got
the fastball on the outside corner and he knew it
was a strike.

Speaker 1 (01:14:46):
And just walked away. Second pitch from Lolich misses the
outside corner, two and zero, the sch holding out ball
in his love as he gets it's the sign now
ready and throws and that's the called strife. The ball's
one strike. Willy Stargell is on deck in this one

(01:15:14):
nothing ball game. In the last of the fourth, the
American League leads back again with the fastball. Good fastball,
nowns it back and it's two and two, keeping our

(01:15:36):
fingers crossed about the expected rain. Some went near here
several hours ago. Well, it's ready. Ball is hit high
to the right side. Out goes Karou, In comes Jackson.
Jackson calls off Karu and has it near the fell
line for the second half. That'll bring up Willie Stargul,

(01:15:57):
who walked back in the second d Later a race
on a fast double.

Speaker 8 (01:16:04):
Play and Lolich might be a little tough for Stargel
Mickey with the good arm capable of dropping down. He
does throw side arm occasionally to the left handers and
make it awfully hard for him.

Speaker 1 (01:16:17):
May's and Aaron of course, right handers and Starguars stepping in.
There is the left handed with a bat and constant
windmill motion. Now waits and hits the first one off
his fist, fouls it off behind the plate. Freehand comes back,
but it's going to make the seats. Strike won the
Stargule two ninety six on the year, nineteen home runs,
sixty RBIs and one of the prime reasons why the
Pirates are five and a half games up on the

(01:16:39):
New York Mets in the Eastern Division of the National League.
Strike one count Loel. It's staring in at Stargel who
whips that bat around again? Now Mickey has a song
strike to Stan Landers, who's behind the plate. Tonight from
the National League ludimrror. The American League is at first,

(01:17:01):
Basic Lee Wire, the National League at second, Jerry Neudecker
the American League at third. Jerry Dale of the National League.
Down the left fiel On and Bill Kunckle, former American
League pitcher, American League. I'mpired on the right fiel line.
It's three thirty down the lines. This one is hit
high and off the fist, therefore not too deep. Keru
goes out on right field. Jackson comes in and again
Jackson calls off Karuz and Hasard and Lolich has a

(01:17:22):
very effective first inning of pitching in the bourt No
runs hits the ears, and he struck out one. None
left at the end before the American League one, the
National League nothing.

Speaker 12 (01:17:31):
I try to think of the people who are listening.
I actually try to envision a lady in her kitchen working.

Speaker 1 (01:17:39):
I try to envision her just being disturbed with somebody
ringing the bell and having.

Speaker 12 (01:17:45):
To run when she's involved in maybe scrubbing the walls
or the floors or waxing or things like that. I
try to think of everything that possibly could happen to
our ladies on wm IQ as I go through the show,
includes the gals in the office and everything else. I
try to switch on metal images of what they are

(01:18:06):
doing while I am doing the show and to correlate
with that with the things that I have outlined for
that day in the show, so I could bring everything
together and make it timely in something that they will
find interesting and worthwhile I try.

Speaker 11 (01:18:21):
To get acquainted with Pat share as spons from midday
from ten am to one pm here on WMAQ The
Sound of Chicago, we.

Speaker 1 (01:18:33):
Pause thirty seconds for station identification.

Speaker 15 (01:18:38):
Have you been to your ACE Hardware store recently? You
know you can make your do it yourself yours just
a little bit easier. ACE has a big selection of
power hand tools for you, and there's plenty of nationally
advertised electric drills. You'll also find power saws as well
as jigsaws, plus hammers and pliers. We suggest you head
down to your favorite A store, the store that gives
you popular prices, a tremendous selection of Richard nice and

(01:19:00):
more value, more service for your money. That's ACE Hardware
the More Store in Chicago. This is somebody you make
Q Chicago.

Speaker 1 (01:19:09):
In Atlanta, Georgia, this is Jim Simpson along with Sandy
kofax Is. Don Sutton of the Dodgers. The third National
League pitcher has completed his warm up. Sam Brooks Robinson
with the first pitch he saw from Bob Gibson back
in the second inning and bounce. The third base is
up for the second time again. As we survey the
National League defense, there are no changes at all. Sandy

(01:19:31):
remarked while we were away, probably won't be many changes
as long as the National League is behind. They want
to win. The American League won last year. Sutton ready
throws a curve that's the strike at Brooks Robinson too, and.

Speaker 8 (01:19:42):
Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies, now warming up in
the National League bullpen, will probably be the next pitcher
after Don Sutton.

Speaker 1 (01:19:51):
Comes back with the fastball, but it's too low. One ball,
one strike to Brooks Robinson in his sixteenth consecutive All
Star appearance. Sutton ready and comes back with a fastball
that's popped up to the right side. Joe Morgan goes
out on the grass waves everybody off and has it

(01:20:11):
for the first out of the American League fifth That
brings up Bill Freehan, who walked went down the second
on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Jim Palmer up the
first base line and scored when Rod Caru singled through
the middle in the third inning, and free Hand, running
on the pitch of Sandy, said, once the ball went
up the middle, he knew that it was going to

(01:20:33):
be a base hit and chugged on home ahead of
the throw from Willie Mays. Right handed batter takes up
high with a fast ball from Sutton. Ball one Freehand
his sixth starting assignment in an All Star Game. One

(01:20:53):
and oh, pitch missus loan outside. It's two and oh.
Speaking of free Hand, a mighty fine pitcher, But in
the years to come, he's going to be challenged by
a young man that's on the squad already, Carlin Fisk
of Boston. And don't count on another young fine American
League catcher, Johnny Oates of Baltimore. Two and oh. Sutton
ready and throws ball is hit deep the right center

(01:21:14):
field maze is back near the warning crack backing toward
it now and the old basket catch, puts it away. Ah,
Mickey Lolitch is coming up to bath. Lolitch, left handed thrower,

(01:21:37):
is a right handed hitter to out of the American
League fifth one to nothing American League leads as Lowland
sees a fastball and fouls it off directly in front
of Willie Mays in center field. There's a big Braves
emblem with the All Star insignia, the official tin and

(01:21:59):
emblem of this year. All Star gave big painted circle
out in center field. High fastball and it's one and
one to Loulig. Thinking Mickey with some respect, not too
shallow and about straight away and in fact there's a
big hole as they do not expect him to pull

(01:22:20):
between Kessinger and Tory. Fastball missus two balls, one strike.
Hey Lord Perry, hasn't he been in the news lately,
not only for winning ball games? But we're supposedly throwing
the grease ball at the grease pitch is out warming
up in the American League. Hit off to the right side,
it'll make the seats. Poul two balls, two strikes to Lolig,

(01:22:49):
fifty seven backed into the stadium that I would imagine
the temperature now may have dropped to the upper eighties
started out in the nineties breaking pitch misses. It's down
low and Sutton has gone all the way with pitcher
Mickey Lowlick. Three balls, two strikes. I don't want to

(01:23:12):
lose him and bring up carew comes back with one
and Mickey fouls it off again right behind Bence. She
retrieves it. Stan Landis puts another ball in play still
three and two. Fastball gets him looking at the knees

(01:23:37):
at strike three. Sutton as his strikeout his second. The
runs hits theer eras none left. The last of the
fifth we go. It's still the American League one, the
National League nothing. I'm Kyle Roade.

Speaker 9 (01:23:50):
Last year during the World Series, I helped introduce you
to the amazing two bladed razor from Gillette, the Track two.
Since then, over three million men have made the Track
two the most successful new razor in history. Why because
Gillette discovered an entirely new shaving principle that no one
blade razor can duplicate. Even if you shaved twice took
two strokes instead of one, your one blade razor just

(01:24:11):
can't shave you like the two bladed Tract two.

Speaker 1 (01:24:13):
You try. It beats any one blade razor ever made.

Speaker 9 (01:24:18):
If you think Firestone's new Radio V one tire gives
you forty thousand miles or more, you're right. If you
think the Radio V one rides rough like some other radios,
you're wrong. Radio V one will give you a really
comfortable ride. Firestone is so sure they'll give you seven
days to test right it. If you don't like the

(01:24:39):
way it handles or rides, you get your old tires
and your money back. The forty thousand mile Radio V
one another people tire from Firestone.

Speaker 1 (01:24:52):
Parrel Weaver, manager of the American League, has made his
first defensive change. Sal Bando of Oakland has gone in
to play third base, replacing Bert Robinson. Got a zick
out in the first drew at second, Richard short Bando
a third Estremstein left mercer and center Jackson right free
hand behind the plate, and Mickey Lolich about to begin

(01:25:13):
his second inning of pitching. He got May's Ernand Stargell
on a strikeout and two easy flies to right field.
Here's Johnny ben first time up, hit the first pitch
that he saw from Jim Pommer and drounded into a
first fast double play to crew down at second. Base.
Lullis drows it's outside ball one to Johnny Bench. Bench,
in case you're not aware, did not hear leaves the

(01:25:34):
majors and home runs an RBI's with twenty four and
seventy two lollits back and throws, and this one misses outside. Also,
it's two and zero to Johnny Bench. In this one
to nothing ball game, which the American League leads, Lee
May kneels on deck Detroit Battery out there now free

(01:25:55):
hand catching Lolich pitching, and that's the strike. Catches the
outside corner. Two balls once right the bench and was
looking all the way on that finish. It high in
the air down the line, fairer fowl. Jerry Dale is looking.

(01:26:17):
It is foul. Jerry Dale. The umpire down the left
field line turned and look it was far enough, but
Dale signaled fowl ball. It's two and two. We almost
had a drive all game. Dude, them balls like that,
it's hard to tell you know just how far fairer
foul they are. The ball was hit higher than the

(01:26:38):
foul pole here in Atlanta, and it didn't go that
far foul when it was in the seats, and it
was curving pretty quick, so it just had just gone foul.
Loulich for the life is back and there's a line
drive base at the left field bench not to be dried.
That is just the second man All Star hit. The

(01:27:02):
other's on by Lee May, who is stepping in on
the right side of the plate now to do his swinging.
He had a three to two count and line the
single left field back in the second inning on to
nothing the tying run. Johnny Bench on at first base.
May stares down at Charlie Fox, his coach at third base.
His free hand went out to say a few words

(01:27:23):
to Mickey Lolich, his pitcher Joe Tory is on deck.
They big right handed better STEP's in free hands pointing
and they wanted, I believe Lee Wire, the second base
umpire to move away. He was in Lee May's line
of sight as he looked out at the pitch of
Mickey Lolicch. So he moves up the line forward first
base drive hit the left field the stepski doesn't move

(01:27:44):
too far forward and he's not too deep and has
it for the first out. So that's one odd and
Tory who struck out swinging against Palm and the second
inning up for the second time, Bench of course, anchored
at first base, Don Kessinger is coming out on deck,

(01:28:05):
so Danny Murtou is not making two moves except too
many moves, except with his pitching staff. Try right hander
that hell direct waits for the pitch and puts the
first one down the line. It is curving foul, and
it's a foul ball again in the seats again, and

(01:28:27):
Lolits has had bench and now Tory pulled the ball
well down the line. But each one of those balls
hooked foul at the last moment, and Mickey doesn't look
like he's throwing the ball as well this inning as
he did the last ny.

Speaker 8 (01:28:40):
He's thrown a few balls up. He got away with
the breaking pitch to Lee May jammed him with a
bad curveball up high, but all the balls that have
been hit hard have been up.

Speaker 1 (01:28:50):
Lola's Ready throws this one low, but it's also inside.
One on one to Tory, one ball, one strike out,
one man on. And this one to nothing ball game,
which the American League leads in the last of the fifth,
This one's too low. As Tory checks his swing, two balls,

(01:29:10):
one strike, Lolich has a sign in the stretch, looks
over at bench comes in with the fastball. It is
too low again and he is behind to Joe Tory
three balls, one strike. Well on a three and one

(01:29:40):
count against a fellow like Joe Tory, let us see
what a seventeen game winner like load it stows him.
Does he give him the fast ball? Does he give
him the breaking ball? On three balls, one strike, Sandy said,
some of the breaking pitches have stayed high, and he's
almost gotten in trouble. Comes in with the pitch and
it has popped up to the right side. Dick Allen
foul territory by the coach seeing box, tases it down

(01:30:01):
and almost has it get away from him, but has
it for the second half. Don Kessinger bench still at
first now to a Kessinger fly to left to Yastremski.
Back in the third inning, Yastremsky had the back pedal

(01:30:26):
where Kessinger's drive. Don at that time was hitting left handed.
Now he is moving around to the right side against
the left handed Lolitch, a little bit better hitter from
the left side. Ground ball charging his Grich who goes
to the second basement. Peru and Lolich is out of
what appeared to be for several moments they're all out
of trouble. The runs, one hit, no eras and bench
left at first. The end of five, the American League

(01:30:48):
won the National League. Nothing.

Speaker 6 (01:30:51):
It's fun being on the air. It is not an
ego trip anymore. It was at one time. I probably
wouldn't have gotten into this bit said I not had
some sort of aberrated ego.

Speaker 1 (01:31:03):
I don't think the psychedelic mind of Joel Sebastian.

Speaker 6 (01:31:05):
Starts out on a solid foundation with any sort of
philanthropic ideas that I'm going to save the industry or
the world or myself. It's gone into because of the
stroking you get from people.

Speaker 1 (01:31:21):
Right between the ears of Joel Sebastian.

Speaker 6 (01:31:24):
I don't think it's dishonest at this point to say
I don't want that anymore, because I don't if I
were to say it and use that as a guise
of getting it, because somebody would then say, oh, gee.

Speaker 1 (01:31:36):
Isn't he different.

Speaker 6 (01:31:36):
He doesn't want to be called at this jockey, and
therefore I would get more adulation, then freak out.

Speaker 4 (01:31:41):
Every afternoon with Joel Sebastian from one until four on WMAQ,
The Sound of Chicago.

Speaker 1 (01:31:52):
Ill Again. Jim Simpson along with Sandy Kofat's and Steve
Carlton is on around now and he becomes the fourth pitcher.
Carlin leads the Majors and strikeouts this year with two
hundred and one and one hundred and ninety six innings,
and that tells you something has a nine game winning
streak going for him after losing five in a row,
and Carlin's overall record his fourteen wins and six losses

(01:32:17):
with a two point four to eight Earn Roun average.
Now we have some wholesale changes made by Danny Murton.
Manny Sanghian is your new catcher, Chris Spier of the
San Francisco Giants is your new shortstop. Billy Williams of
the Cups is your new left fielder, and Caesar Sadanio,
who leads the major leagues in hitting with the three
fifty five average, has gone to center field. So it

(01:32:38):
is san Gian of the Pirates behind the plate. May
at first, more than a second Spire at short, Tori
at third, Williams and lefts a Dane one center, and
Aaron in right field. Sixth inning, one to nothing, American
League Rod Krue grounded out, Morgan made a good play
on him in the first inning, and then single up
the middle to drive in free hand with the only
run in the third inning. Up now to face Steve Carlin,

(01:32:59):
big tall, left handed.

Speaker 8 (01:33:02):
To even talk about overpowering pitchers, Carleton's got great stuff.
He throws very hard at good fastball, very good curveball.
In the past again as a young pitcher, a little
control trouble, that's all gone now, as you said, two
hundred and one strikeouts in one hundred and ninety six innings.
There's no doubt about the fact that he can throw hard.

Speaker 1 (01:33:28):
If you are keeping score with us, SA Daniel, who
replaced Mason center Well, bat second as Mays did. Williams
will replaces Stargele. We'll about fourth of Stargel did, and
san Gean it was right in Johnny Bench's number five spot,

(01:33:49):
and we'll bat there. So they bat just in the
same order in which they replace their men. Let's take
over not only in the outfield, but also in the
batting lineup. The same lineup. Rob Carew leads it off,
as we said, and that is ball wand from carlon
Tory is well and on the grass as Carlin misses

(01:34:10):
again up high it is two.

Speaker 8 (01:34:11):
And all, getting Bill Stoneman up and throwing in the
Montreal bullpen in the bullpen now from the Montreal ball
Club in the National League bullpen. So I'd have to
think that Danny Mirto is trying to give his pitchers
or get as many as he can into the ball game.
Otherwise he would have put Steve Carlton in a different
spot in the lineup.

Speaker 1 (01:34:28):
The pitcher due to hit next inning. Carlin's next pitch
is over. It's two balls, one strike to crew and
he's ready again. And Drew tries to drag his way
on with Missus and it's two balls, two strikes. Well,
the wholesale changes have the gun. As everybody likes to
see their favorite all stars play. It's quite a bench
that each manager can maneuver with. There's the two to

(01:34:49):
two pitch from Carlin that missus lowing away, and it's
three balls and two strikes. The Rod carew Im Sutton
in their two innings gave up no runs, one hit,
and struck out two. Here's a foul hit out of play.

(01:35:11):
Very few walks and as anyone will tell you, walks.
Ken Hirtcher the only man that has been walked in
this game by the National League pitchers. Here's a ball
four to Carew. The ball gets by the catcher sandgame,
the Carew cannot go any farther. I was about to
say the only walk was too free hand and he scored.
And now there's the second walk given up by a
National League pitcher, and it is the leadoff man. If

(01:35:33):
Bobby Mercer do up, and Mercer's taking a long look
down at Dick Williams, the third base coach, who is
splashing the signs Carlon a left hander. Mercer, a left
handed battle Tory, is behind the bag at third base.
Mercer looked as if the swing it's lone away and

(01:35:54):
it's ball one, one to nothing the score. We are
on the top of the sixth inning. The American League
leads it in the game that has only seen five
hits combined in one run score. Carlin now checks over
at first base. Crew is back. In plenty of time.
Lee May is holding there fastball Missus pops out of

(01:36:19):
the glove of Saan Game picks it up. Caru cannot advance.
It's two and oh. Now to Mercer, who again looks
down to Tick with him flashing signs in a third
base coaching box. Reggie Jackson, who is two for two,
is on deck. Carlin ready again and throws, and this
one misses. It is too low. He has walked one
man and is now three and oh to Bobby Mercer

(01:36:40):
of the New York Yankees, Big Steve Carlin throws it
is high but across the letters for a strike three
and one. Mercer has some power, are fourteen home runs

(01:37:01):
this year playing for the Yankees. There's a check at
first base on the three and one count, was making
sure the crew is not going anywhere, and Rodney gets back.
Carlin throws ground ball, May has it goes down to
second base and the shortstop part goes back to first
fast double play.

Speaker 8 (01:37:23):
The fine double play by Lee may one of the
toughest for the infields to make the first to short
back to first. And when the first basement is that
close to the first base bag when he catches, there's
a terrible tendency to step on the bag and take
off the fourth and make it a lot more difficult
to tag the runner at second.

Speaker 1 (01:37:40):
But Lee didn't. He just went ahead and took the chance.
Here's Reggie Jackson, who doubled in the first and singling
the fourth he's two for two. Well, that's the second
fine double play that May has turned in a night,
and both have been on balls hit by Bobby Mercer. Jackson,
left hander, looks to the fastball if misses inside, one ball,
no strikes on nothing. The American League spire of the

(01:38:06):
shortstop is almost behind second base, where Jackson, a pole hitter,
takes a mighty cut and almost goes to his knees.
One ball, one strike, Chivin.

Speaker 8 (01:38:14):
I think if you're wondering, you know, everybody's talking about
how do you speed up the game of baseball? You
see tonight that when you've got pitchers who've got good
stuff and go after the hitters and aren't missing the
plate a lot, that the game gets speeded up quite
a bit. We've been playing a lot now a little
over an hour, and this is the sixth inning.

Speaker 1 (01:38:33):
Bitcham Carlin is outside, two balls, one strike. It is
moving right along. The National League fans are in Atlanta
have not had much to cheer about it.

Speaker 5 (01:38:40):
All.

Speaker 1 (01:38:40):
American League pitching has look good. And there's a sinking
ball thrown by Carlin that Jackson again takes a good
cutout and again misses two balls, two strikes, with two
out in the sixth, brows ground ball, but Morgan is
waiting at second base because down his knees, gets up,
throws home to man's out all hipster horizon un left.

(01:39:02):
How we go to the last of the six and
the score remains the same. The America League one, National
League nothing. What do you do, sir, I'm a physician,
I'm a doctor.

Speaker 6 (01:39:12):
In your line of work, do you believe in having
the right tools and that call for inspection should be
made at the proper time.

Speaker 1 (01:39:18):
I don't know what you're getting at. What do you
mean by well extra care and engineering?

Speaker 6 (01:39:22):
When you have a vacation, leave your office, a body
leaves your office like a body leaves a Christ Corporation plant. Yes,
when that body leaves your office to go out into
the world, how do you want that body.

Speaker 1 (01:39:33):
To link function as maximally as possible?

Speaker 6 (01:39:35):
And it's the same. It's Christ of Corporation.

Speaker 16 (01:39:38):
They use four thousand wells in a unibody and in
all their cars built in North America they use torsion
bar suspension. GM uses torsion bars only in Cadillac El
Dorado and Oldenbale Toronado. Vice A Corporation inspects, and the
inspectors are checked in by other checkers extra care and
engineering in every Dodge, Plymouth and Chryslo.

Speaker 6 (01:39:59):
What's your medical opinion of all that?

Speaker 1 (01:40:01):
I can't really about.

Speaker 6 (01:40:03):
It's okay, then how about a driver's opinion.

Speaker 1 (01:40:05):
I thinks you're better off for Christler than a doctor.
Gay Lord Perry is out warming up for the American
League as we begin the last of the sixth inning.
Nikoi Lolach, who was struggling in the fifth inning, has
left the game. He pitched two innings, That's what Billy

(01:40:28):
Martin's manager wanted him to do, no more than two.
Gave up no runs one yet struck out one walk.
Nobody now Perry, a sixteen game winner, is on. He's
got a new catcher in Carlton Fisk. Reggie Jackson's moved
to center field, and Richie shine Bloom, the American League's
leading hitter, has gone on to right field in these

(01:40:48):
wholesale shakeups, and we now have a pinch hitter for
the pitcher, Steve Carlin, who only works one inning that
I believe Chris Spire was in the game already not
a hitch hitting, so he must have been inserted in
the pitcher's spot and Steve Carlton probably in the eighth spot,

(01:41:11):
in the spot that don Kessinger was hitting in. Oh
here we wont go with Chris Fire. Well that's the
fun you have at every All Star Game, trying to
figure out where they're going to bat and who's in
the game and who's not. They try to get everybody in.
They aren't Perry ready to throw the spire. And remember
these two used to be teammates with the Giants, Perry
and the trader with the winner that brought Sam McDow

(01:41:33):
to the Giants and sent Perry on to Cleveland and
the z had a ball there. He's won sixteen ballgames
and like in the Nash League, been accused of doing
something with something on it as a ball hit out
the right field, sinking fast. Iin Bloom just in comes
on to take a catch at the knee tops for
the first off.

Speaker 8 (01:41:48):
Dude, what a year Perry is having. He's thinking about
winning sixteen ballgames. Hits a great feat. Lolich Is won
seventeen at the All Star Game. But Mickey's pitching for
a first Divisional Division leading club of the Gaelord Perry.
Pitching for a club is not winning, it's having its travels.
He had a chance to win seventeen before coming here
and got to be two to one on Sunday, so

(01:42:09):
he's just had a great year.

Speaker 1 (01:42:11):
Joe Morgan, who has lined the center and fly the
left up for the third time. Perry is the third
American League pitcher which is too low to him ball one.
The National League has used Gibson, Glass, Sutton, and now
Steve Carlum. American League started with Palmer, who worked three
nearly perfect innings, then Lolich, now Gaylord Perry, John Ball

(01:42:34):
Peru on the grass grows on to Allen at first
base and they're two off the National League. Fans everywhere
know of Caesar Sedaniel of Houston. He is hitting three
fifty five. He has thirteen home runs, forty two RBIs,
twenty six stolen bases, a great arm. He is twenty

(01:42:57):
one years old and as a superstar of the future.
He said back for the first time, right handed, better, young,
eager ball player, and he is already something. But he
is going to be a star for many, many years,
barring any kind of injury in there to face Skylord
Perry is facing before over in the National League, Perry
is ready and rose a strike cho out with Sadania

(01:43:20):
up and Aaron neeling on deck, and this won a
nothing game. The American League took the lead in the
third inning and is held on to it. So looking
for some of that explosive power from the National League match.
There's a change up and as I've all hit past
the shortstop, grits and Sadaniel taking on his way around
first base and hold it. He has to come back.
He's always going for the extra base and that ball

(01:43:41):
was just hitting short left field, but say Or was
off and running.

Speaker 8 (01:43:44):
Jim He's one of the most exciting players I've ever seen,
and a great young player. All the tools, as he said,
a fine arm, incredible speed.

Speaker 1 (01:43:53):
Good power, and looks like he loves to play. A
lot of people have accused him of being a little
bit of a hot dog. But when you want to
run everything out like that, I think it embarrasses some
people who don't quite run as hard. Well. Here is
Hank Aaron Wany home runs six hundred and fifty nine
zero for two to nine up against Gaylord Perry, who

(01:44:15):
has only given up six home runs all year. Oul
Perry is tough to hit the home run off of,
but Aaron hits them off of everybody.

Speaker 8 (01:44:26):
Jim, I'm sure that somewhere in that's six fifty nine
there's one or two with Gaylord's name on it. I
think anybody who's pitched a few years in the National
League has got a little.

Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
Something in that six hundred and fifty nine. There's a
ball hit the deep left field. If lets he goes
back near the.

Speaker 5 (01:44:41):
Wall, looks up, he goes up fits ball.

Speaker 1 (01:45:19):
The National League Leagues two to one on the home
run by Hank Aaron and Atlanta Brave, and the fans
are still on their feet.

Speaker 5 (01:45:29):
Is there any doubt who Aaron plays for?

Speaker 1 (01:45:36):
Al Perry? Aaron picked on his first pitch and just
rifled it out of here. Little Nodell Billy Williams is
up now in his fifth All Star Game, and he
has been some kind of hitter in the regular National
League season. Left handed battle they call him tweak wi
him pops the first from up val Bando gives Chase
down the line along the third base line, but it
falls out of reach. Williams in his last fourteen games

(01:45:59):
are the right gular seasons hit five hundred thirty one
hits in sixty two at bats and nineteen rbiys, and
Billy has been hitting it a four to eighteen clip
in the last forty one games of the season. And
when he goes back to playing on Thursday, he'll be
playing for a new manager. In case you have not heard,
Theodorasia of the Cup stepped aside, why he Lachman is
the new manager of the Chicago Cups. One strike that

(01:46:21):
counts to Williams two to one the National League last
of the sixth Perry Ready fastball strike. It's two strikes
now to Williams. Mell Aaron had been blanked by a
couple of pitchers, Palmer and Lulich, but he got to
Perry with two out in the last of the sixth inning,
with Sedanew on base ahead of him. Minutes two to one.

(01:46:44):
The National League curveball hit off the fists, not too deep.
Jackson comes in and short center field stops now near
that big circle and takes it. But the two runs
score on the two hits, including the home run by
Hank Era. Now Era's gone left at the end of
six the National League two the Market League one.

Speaker 17 (01:47:01):
I too have my down periods. I fight with my
wife just like everyone else does, and I have my
blue days and my up days. Now, you can go
to work with a pretty good grouchun and I can
and do. But for the four hours I'm on the air,
I can't let that show. When I listen to the
tapes after the show is over, and I'll critique the show.

(01:47:23):
Sometimes I will cringe. And I can go home and
say she had a terrible show today, and my wife
will say I thought it sounded great, or on the
other end, I can have what I feel is an
exceptionally good show, and my timing will be infallible, and

(01:47:45):
I'll meet someone in the hall and I say, hey
had kind of a loose show today.

Speaker 11 (01:47:49):
Get acquainted with Clark Webber. Afternoons from four to eight
pm on w MAQ, the Sound of Chicago.

Speaker 1 (01:48:03):
Will pause thirty seconds for station identification.

Speaker 15 (01:48:07):
Is that home, sweet home of viewers ready for a
new lease on life? Well, why don't you do it
yourself with a paint job upstairs, downstairs, inside, and outside.
Then get on down to your independently owned Ace Hardware
store where you can get the paint for everything. More
flat paints, more acrylic paints and ammos and varnishes. They
also have the brushes, the rollers and the ladders too.
You can get that home of viewers in tiptop shape

(01:48:29):
by visiting the store that's got the popular prices. It's
Ace Hardware, the More Store in Chicago and what do
you make you Chicago, along.

Speaker 1 (01:48:38):
With Sandykofax Jim Simpson back in Atlanta, there is still
another picture for the National League and he becomes a
fifth bill Stone Banat of Montreal. The ex bos picture
has one eight lost, seven arn on an average of
three point one six. Harlan, who has departed, he only
came on. If it's the sixth inning right now, could

(01:48:59):
be the winning pitcher. This ball game is not over
by a long shot. A Storman a right hand I
must face Dick Allen, Karnis Tempsky and Bobby Gritz. They
are the scheduled hitters in the American League seventh. In
this two to one ball game, the National League has
dramatically taken the lead on the home run by Hank
Aaron Stoneman ready and throws the first pitch, breaking pitch
that drops over strike to Allen. Allen has the kind

(01:49:23):
of back that can tie this ballgame with one swing.
Storman watches as his curve ball sinks low and away
from Dick Allen. It's one ball, one strike. Stoneman with
that red, white and blue capit of the expost so
is a fast ball that's fouled out a playoff to

(01:49:44):
the right seamen out in the American League bullpen, wilver
Wood of the Chicago White Sox has gotten up and
starting to warm Stoneman five to ten from Illinois ok
park control problems this year, that's been his biggest problem.
Throws a curveball. Their bouncing balls fire, the shortstop charges it,

(01:50:05):
takes it on second half, rose on the May and
that's one out of the American League seventh due. It's
interesting to watch Chris Ferry.

Speaker 8 (01:50:12):
Last year we did a couple of ball games with
the San Francisco Club and he had a little trouble
getting rid of the ball. He took a few too
many steps and it took him too long. But it
looks like he's changed that now. He made that play
very well, got rid of the ball quickly.

Speaker 1 (01:50:26):
Carlo Stremski round to the second base and he sent
Willie May's deep to the wall in the fourth inning
ball it looked like he's gonna get out of here,
but did not. Lieutenant Batter sees a fastball from Stoneman,
stay high and outside. It's ball on. Two runs, four hits,
no errors for the National League. Now one run, three
hits and no errs for the American Stoneman ready throws

(01:50:50):
another pitch, looked like a slot of that time, and
it drops over. One ball, one strike. Spire pulled a
way around at shortstop. Morgan way over toward force May
near the line. So Daniel and left in left center.
Big swing by Yassky for strike two and Aaron in
deep right. Some teams will shift for you. The National

(01:51:24):
League does not have a complete shift off. Stoneman back
throws a fastball and strikes him out. That is the
third strikeout registered by a National League pitcher, two of
them along to Don Sutton, whoop, it's two winnings. Here's
Bobby Gritch who is all for two and he's not

(01:51:52):
gotten the ball out of the infield. He's fouled out
to the third baseman and looked at the third called
strike along away with the fastball. It's fall one. Well,
remember what we were talking about. Pregame, Tony Kubeck reported
the county. Campania said he did not want to play.
He'd been selected to replace Aparicio, selected to start. Oh
Weaver changed it, he said, I don't want to play
for you. That ought to be something with Oakland and

(01:52:12):
Baltimore hook up throughout the season. Breaking pitch is too low.
Two and oh. Now to Grich, I'd be a little
bit more pressure on the youngster to help his manager
log and his judgment to play him over the veteran
camponeras two and oh. Pitch, it's outside and it's three

(01:52:35):
and oh. Sal Bando, who has not been up yet,
is on the on deck circle. Rich crouching from the
right pide of the plate, watches a fastball catch the
corner and it's three balls one s right, taking all away,

(01:52:57):
and now I steps out to look down to Dick Williams.
The three to one pitch ground ball spire charging its
shortstop again, gets them all away fast, great arm and
has his man Ron's hit. Cerreira is none left. We
go to the last of the seventh still the National
League two, the American League one. Hey, are you one

(01:53:21):
of those guys who turns into a roughneck every morning
because shaving leaves your neck rough and irritated, and if
it does, let.

Speaker 9 (01:53:29):
Me myle radio v one another people tire from Firestone.

Speaker 1 (01:53:39):
A couple of more changes. Day Lord Perry stays on
the mound as they move to the National League seventh,
but the front norm Cash to move the first base
to play thing. Dick Allen and Carlis Kremski is out
of the ball game, and Joe Rudy, who for some
time has led the American League in hitting but Sims
dropped off the pace down to a three h five average,
is out of left field. It'll be san Ghian, May

(01:54:08):
and Toy scheduled in this last of the seventh National
League on the strength of the two runs two out
home run by Hank Aaron and the last of the
sixth lead the American League through the one. The only
run of the American League came in the third when
Rod Caru drove in freehand and walked and been sacrificed
the second. Hay Lord Kerry, the big, tall right hander,

(01:54:32):
ready to throw to san Ghian, breaking pits to the
right side. It hit Cruz there doesn't have to move
thros on to Cash, and Sanghian is a quick out.
Manny swings at nearly everything in sight all the time,
and he's up there so quickly, an oilyous, so quickly
we couldn't tell you he was hitting free twenty five
on the Year of the Pirates, the May have singled

(01:54:54):
and lined the left. Perry checks around at his infield
and outfield, and pros just noticed something, Sandy. I don't
know why they'd noticed before. Reggie Jackson of Oakland is

(01:55:17):
wearing a yellow shirt blouse, and Bando and Rudy are
wearing green, and Dick Williams is wearing a yellow glove.

Speaker 8 (01:55:24):
To the open players, half of them are wearing yellow
shirts and half of them green.

Speaker 1 (01:55:30):
Breaking pitch is over. It's one ball, one strike to
Lee May with one autumn of seventh. Hey, lord Perry,
that hand of his around his hat now into the
glove ready with a one one pitch, just Smith, two balls,
one stripe. May in the early season with Houston was

(01:55:54):
in quite a slump and actually booed down there. But
it has come on to have quite a year and
to be voted onto the All Star squad. Twenty home
run sixty two RBIs it's this ball to center field.
Jackson started to run in now almost backpedal Bill chasing
it and now goes off those left and hauls it in.
Looks like there could be some win.

Speaker 8 (01:56:12):
Two down the National League bullpen. Now Tug McGraw, the
left hander from the Mets, is up, and Troy and
Clay Carroll league final relief pitcher from the Cincinnati Reds,
the right hander.

Speaker 1 (01:56:23):
Here's Joe Toy struck out on foldout. Well, they asked
Earl Weaver, manager of the American League, why did he
pick any relievers? He said, what are you talking about?
I have wilber Wood, who set a record for appearances
as a reliever, would only in recent seasons has been
made a starter.

Speaker 8 (01:56:37):
Jim, I think this is the first time that any
manager has really gone ahead and picked a predominantly a
relief pitcher. Usually they're all starters, and I think it's
the great thing. The relief pitchers today in baseball are
not necessarily somebody who can't make the starting rotation. They
might be the best pitcher on the club, and having
two fellows like Clay Carroll and Tug McGraw can't hurt

(01:56:58):
you late in the ball game.

Speaker 1 (01:57:00):
Count nows. This pitch misses is two balls, No strikes
to Toy with two outs, last to the seventh in
Atlanta aper high eighties, very muggy, more rain expected. The
game has not been delayed in anyway. Although there was
some rain and they did not take batting practice. Sorry
fouls this one off to the right. There was not
actually any rain falling with any regularity or an intensity

(01:57:23):
here in Atlanta Stadium at six' Ten eastern, time when
they were expected to take batting, practice but rather lightning
was in the, area and the, players the coaches and
the management everybody, said let's just stay out of. That
the two to one pitch is the breaking, ball And
tory has his first base in a line drive the
left field As rudy goes down to one, knee picks
it off and throws it on the crew at. Second

(01:57:43):
a two out single By Joe. Tory harry has given
up his third. Hit Bill, stoneman the pitcher will back
for himself with two. Outs stoneman bats as he throws

(01:58:05):
from the right, side a spire comes out on. Deck,
well there's something our little squawk box here tells us
that out of those six hundred and fifty nine home
runs That aaron had hit in the regular season two
and two only have come Off. Gaylord. Kerry we got one.

(01:58:26):
Tonight that's the difference in the ball. Game harry ready
and throws the breaking pitch That stoneman files.

Speaker 8 (01:58:33):
Away in, Fact, jim there is a mark on the
left field wall here that Is Hank aaron six, hundred
and that was one Of. Gaylords it doesn't Have gaylord's
name on it Has Hank aaron on.

Speaker 1 (01:58:45):
It six. Hundred then his Second All star and the
one that could win this ball game for The National.
League kerry has given up some important home. Runs it's down.
Low they're all, important but at times when you notice
number six, hundred for Example All, stars one, ball one,
strike very working from the stretch with Torri on at

(01:59:13):
first throws And stormland fishes for a bad pitch down
low and. Away, yeah just THINKING i probably gave up
number three hundred, somewhere but that's so long ago nobody even. Remembers,
well we were talking about that the other, Night. Sandy
when you were, Pitching hank was a little bit different
kind of. Pitcher he went with the pitch and didn't
try to pull. Everything and With Joe NAIs has one,
ball two strikes and back with the pitch And stoneman

(01:59:35):
fowls this one.

Speaker 12 (01:59:35):
Off.

Speaker 8 (01:59:36):
YEAH i don't think he's necessarily any better or worse a,
hitter BUT i think as you get, older a lot
of players have to start the bat a little bit,
quicker and he's become more of a pull hitter than
he used to. BE i think part of that is
this ballpark here In. Atlanta there's so much foul. Territory
he was worried that if he hit the ball the
opposite field and maybe hit a pop fly or somethink

(01:59:57):
down the first base. Line there's a great deal of
foul territory on both sides of the field that would bother.

Speaker 1 (02:00:03):
Him nonman has called out looking at a third call,
strike no, runs one, hit no r As tory left at.
First we've gone through seven. Innings now The National league
leads The American league to the. One you can be,
scratch indeed you but to cool Kool aid Brand SoftBank.

(02:01:11):
Mix you're never too. Old hello again From. ATLANTA a special,
hello not only for those of you listening in our,
country but around the. World An American Forces. Network we
understand that we're going live by. Satellite the europe were
being heard in such places As, Saigon turkey in The Far,
east and of course he In, japan and we say

(02:01:33):
hello to all of. You Ron santo has gone in
to play third, base Replacing Joe tory two to one
ball game as we began the top of the eighth,
inning stone when taking his warm, up The American league
scored first in the third inning when free hand walked
was bunned down a second By Jim palmer Of, baltimore
who worked the first ratings as The American league pictured
had then scored on a Rock crew single up the.

(02:01:54):
Middle The nationally got its two runs in the sixth
inning in rapid fire. Fashion After Gaylord perry got the
first two men, out he gave up a single to
Says Our, sadanio, who as he continued on the, second
would never have set Up aaron's home, run but he
scrambled back to first after getting a, single And Aaron
hank immediately followed hitting the first pitch over the left
field tense for a Second All star home, run and

(02:02:17):
that's put The Nash league in. Front through to watch
and here we are in the eighth. Inning it looks
like we're getting a change right now in the. Ballgame
Al oliver from The Pittsburgh pius just ran out to
fit right. Field Henry aaron is coming, off AND i
think the reason is. Obvious So hank can get his
hands and he gets the.

Speaker 8 (02:02:35):
Ovation and that's the kind of thing That danny murtaal
would think. Of danny back this year after managing the
tires of The World championship last, year to manage in
The All Star game and one of the nicest Men
i've ever met in.

Speaker 1 (02:02:51):
Baseball Al oliver goes out to right field style bando
up for the first time two forty eight on the,
year ten home, runs fifty. Rbi he's the captain of
The Oakland a's and takes low From Bill. Stoneman stoneman
working his second. Inning ball game Is sandy pointed out
is not yet two hours. Old and here we are
in the eighth. Inning fastball hit up the, middle But

(02:03:13):
morgan is there for the second hop and the second
baseman throws on the may and that's one Of, well
here's the youngster they call Him pudge born In New,
hampshire the third string catcher when The Boston Red sox
started spring. Trending submy is their first dring. Catcher he

(02:03:35):
is hitting three ten fifteen home, runs thirty six RBIs
stolen four, Bases carl And fisk and he is absolutely
amazed and an all to be here and loves it
right handed better stepping in now Against Bill stoneman with
one out in The American, League gate thom already and,
throws And fisk is looking all the ways the ball sales.
Outside it's ball. One National league has won twenty three

(02:04:04):
The American league. Eighteen there was one tie last. Year
The American league won at six, games six to. Four
in the game in which there were six home. Runs
they had a low one away pitch From. Stoneman and
there's two and, OH i think that well since two
and oh now they're changing it as Umpire stanlander says
that was an accidental foul tip ball. Won strike one

(02:04:27):
that changed on the, board will change it with Few
stoneman throws a curveball that is too. Low now there's
two balls and one. Strike santo at, Third spire at,
Short morgan at, Second may at, First williams in, Left
sadaniu And Senator oliver And wright sangi and the catcher

(02:04:48):
And stoneman has a sign and he is ready to
throw To Carlton fisk, fastball And, fisk in his First
All star, game has a base Hist Well perry is

(02:05:13):
out And Reggie smith is. In Reggie smith came on
also due to an injury When otis Of Kansas city went.
Out Reggie smith was picked to sixty seven, hitter switch
hitter with a lot of power eleven home runs forty
Rv eyes batting left handed Against, stoneman the right, hander
And smith is a little bit better hitter from the
left side of the. Plate he can hit the ball

(02:05:34):
out of. Anywhere first, pitch and he took the big
home run swing With vissits fist down at first space
with one, out two to one The National, league where
in The American, League Gate stoneman is ready throws him
a breaking. Pitch it is, inside one, ball one. Strike

(02:06:00):
this down at first base has to be absolutely thrilled
hitting a base hitting his First All star at bat
ball has fouled away and it goes over the head
of the fellow kneeling on, Deck Cookie, rojas obviously a
nice catch made by a. Fan up of the stamps are,

(02:06:22):
left one, ball two strikes The. Rojas the second basement
is about the bat Or karu a second, basement big
swing way out in front of, it and down swinging

(02:06:44):
Goes Reggie Smith stoneman has a second. Strikeout Cookie rojas
comes on now from The Kansas City. Royals rojas hitting
at two ninety, eight not a power hit or two
home runs thirty nine rbiyes and of Course rojas long
time of The, phillies made it The All star squad

(02:07:07):
before as A national. Leader now here he is as
An american. Leader but two outs tis gone at first
base to the one the score of The National. League
thorman looks At, fisk who's going. Nowhere there's a breaking
pitch that catches the Outside connor strike. One rojas was

(02:07:27):
voted by The phillies sometime agoes they're all time best second,
baseman and they've had a lot of them in that
long career of that, franchise The Philadelphia. Phillies gilman out
of the stretch looking at, fists comes back of the
breaking pitch that's in the dirts and he and digs
it out and bluffs the throw down the first base one,

(02:07:48):
ball one. Strike Lee may has gone all the way
and so as a second base Partner Joe, morgan they
were swapped from for one. Another may From, Cincinnati, Houston
morgan From houston To night last, winter both of them
having great. Years breaking pitch And ross reaches across the
bit almost as if to punch it to the offosite,
field and misses one, ball two, Strikes morgan Giving rojas a,

(02:08:11):
great big hole and on the first base side of.
Second he's playing almost as If rojas were a pull,
hitter which he's. Not but in this, SITUATION i with two,
out maybe Figuring cookie will try and pull the, ball
going for the long ball a little bit. More breaking,
pitch it has hit deep to left. Field williams goes
back to the warning. Prack he is there and it

(02:08:31):
has Gone, rojas he, said not a power hitter pulled
away on The American league takes the league three to.
Two Dun Billy williams got back there and it looked
like he was going to catch the, ball and just
as he thought he was going to catch, it he
hit the. FENCE i think if if he had gotten
back there right away and been, waiting he would have

(02:08:53):
caught that. Ball but just as her it ran into the,
fence it looked like it deflected his body enough so
that he couldn't get the. Ball, rojas the, man one
of the men that you would not expect to bust
the ball out of, here has. Done so DID i

(02:09:14):
take that back WHAT i said About Billy. WILLIAMS i
had the benefit here of looking on an instant replay
from the television, booth And billy was back there in
tadball just was too. High he couldn't reach. It Ritchie
Shine bloom switch, hitter leads The American league with the
three twenty four averages up And Chime bloom is hitting
from the left, side and he is a better hitter from,
there and it as quickly three balls and no strikes As.

(02:09:37):
Stoneman he's a little upset with himself and quickly misses
The Shine bloom. Fastball ground ball may making another fine,
play and the two run homer Of Cookie rojas has
put The American league back on. Top and REMEMBER i can't,

(02:09:58):
help but Remember Tony kubeck said the final score to
be three to two of The American ligue go to
the last of the. Eighth The American league lead three
to two over the last of.

Speaker 6 (02:10:05):
List you, KNOW i used to hear that old story
about when you're in broadcasting you had to visualize this,
one you, know, person and you had to broadcast to
that one. Person AND i got ADMITT i never visualized
one individual. FACE i couldn't make them all into one
face for some.

Speaker 1 (02:10:25):
Reason SO.

Speaker 6 (02:10:27):
I think that the image. Changes it changes because of
what's going on in your.

Speaker 1 (02:10:33):
Head at one particular, moment you, know a lion and a.

Speaker 15 (02:10:37):
Sawn might come, along and all of a, sudden you
think about.

Speaker 6 (02:10:41):
Your, wife or you think about a check that you had,
yesterday you, know or something.

Speaker 1 (02:10:46):
Like, that or you think about a guy that you.

Speaker 6 (02:10:48):
Read, into you, know and you relate whatever that particular.

Speaker 11 (02:10:53):
Message is that's happening in your show to somebody. Else
so get acquainted With jim's. Day evenings midnight.

Speaker 1 (02:11:00):
On w M aq The sound Of, Chicago jim steps
along With Sandy coofax and who would have thought of
the three runs for The american leave all come from
the leadoff Spot Rod crew in the third And ingrove
in one run and Now rohok replacing him as a pinch,
hitter and the eighth inning with his home run drives

(02:11:22):
in the other two and through all three RBIs have
come from the leadoff. Spot but of course something has
gone to form, tonight and that is the fact That
Hank aaron has hit a home. Run Wilbur wood has
come on. Now Wilbur, wood longtime member of The White
sox bullten while down in the goalten with a bunch
of fellas that could throw the, knuckleball learn the knuckleball
and was one of the few left handers that pros.

(02:11:43):
It And wood has had some kind of season he
is now fishing is a. Knucklebutter his earn run averages
two point five. Four he's won fifteen ball, games he's
lost ten AND i would imagine that Young colin fists
the catch is going to, say what's this he's throwing
because he's got to handle Wilbur wood raid to to the. Score,

(02:12:05):
rojas of, course stays in at second. Base spire who
lined the right and his only other time at bat
is up for the second Time chriz from The San Francisco.
Giants wilverwood has already started twenty nine times this year

(02:12:28):
Second All Star. Game he was on the squat last,
year but did not pitch first pitches in the dirt
ball One gray to Two Gaylord, perry who gave up
the two runs could be the winning pitcher Because rojas
got him back with interest ground, ball charging over his Gritz.

(02:12:49):
Ford second base goes on the first To Norm cash
and there's one, out very fast ball. Game when the
last of the eighth inning and the ball game is
about one hour and fifteen minutes. Old believe it or, not,
Well Joe morgan is up for the fourth. Time first time,

(02:13:09):
up he Drove mercer at that time playing center field
deep to take his mind drive since its fly to
left and. Grounded the second left Handed morgan against the
left Hander Wood stripe Swinging wood is the Fourth American league.

(02:13:30):
Pitcher So daniel kneels on deck the strike one pitch the,
knuckleball it misses his up high one ball one. Strike
bando is in on the grass at third, base and
yes this is grassed on artificial church here In. Atlanta
the one to one pitched the knuckleball again and it
stole down the line and may make the seats back

(02:13:52):
at third. Base three, runs five hit snow erres for
The American, league including the two on Homer, rojas two
runs on the home run By, aaron five hits and
no errors for The National. League as we are in
the last of the.

Speaker 8 (02:14:05):
Eighth then beginning to, wonder do you Think Tony kubeck
news that three before the, game and he picked The
american three to.

Speaker 1 (02:14:11):
Two we will never hear the end of it if
it comes out that. Way bowl tipped By. Morgan, No.
Tony we get Together San, Antonio Kirk gardy AND i
at meetings every spring before the baseball. Season we all
make our own little. Picks And tony Picked detroit Over
baltimore in The American League, east and he's letting us

(02:14:33):
know about. It but THEN i reminded him he Picked
minnesota in The American League, west at which point he
plans up a little bit one, two and the knuckleball
is fouled. Off disc is back looking into the, seats
is it's going to drop on the screen behind home?
Plate taking his, time has the new ball and is

(02:15:03):
now staring in At, morgan who now steps, out And
wood does not like the ball he, had so he
asks for another. One And Tom, sandy who showed me
many times it just doesn't feel. Right you don't know
WHY i would have done feel.

Speaker 8 (02:15:15):
Right that's, True, jim AND i think even more so
for a fellow who throws the knuckleball using his teams
as much as Wilbur wood. Does he putting his fingernails
actually into the. Teams if the ball doesn't quite feel
right to, him he's in. Trouble so if he gets
the ball he doesn't, like he's going to get rid of.

Speaker 1 (02:15:32):
It knuckleballs outside is two, too and this one is
in the dirt and it's free and two now with
one out To Joe.

Speaker 8 (02:15:38):
MORGAN i think the knuckleball in this ballpark what Converted
Joe tory from a catcher to a third Base and
there are quite a few knuckleball pitchers at one time With,
atlanta And joe just had a little bit of trouble with.

Speaker 1 (02:15:53):
It he.

Speaker 8 (02:15:54):
Said ALL i did was make friends with the people
in the box seat behind home. Plate three two ground,
ball it is Fat i'll and not gloved the cash
gave a wave out it the ball bounced off his
glove and foul. Territory Red shaneeds coaching in first, base
keeps the ball in.

Speaker 1 (02:16:08):
Place the ball's two. Strikes atlanta, Fans National league fans
Want morgan to get something started here with one out
of The National league gate and there's the pitch that's down,
low and it's Ball forth that skipped away From. Fist

(02:16:29):
morgan is All wood has walked, him and here Comes sodanio.

Speaker 8 (02:16:34):
Situation here Also morgan good speed decking in the league
and still and vases and a knuckleball pitcher on the
mound And Carlton fist the catcher not handling him very.

Speaker 1 (02:16:45):
Much this is probably the first time he's ever had
to Catch.

Speaker 8 (02:16:48):
Wilverwood and it's not easy to catch the knuckleball at any.
Time but a fella that you don't know what his
knuckleball is going to do, it it's almost. Impossible morgan
good lead off at first, Base wood a left handed
looking at.

Speaker 1 (02:16:59):
It morgan's not going big swing and amiss By Sadaniel,
dallas happy As Cardon fist was with getting a single
in his First All star at. Bat, now As sandy
has pointed, out he is somewhat in the. Switches he's
got to catch his knuckleballer and Keep morgan the tying
run close at first base With danio a dangerous, HITTER

(02:17:22):
Dl oliver is on. Deck wood checks over at first,
Base morgan is, Back morgan is on his, way and
the pitch gets five Fift he can't handle. IT i
Think morgan had too bit of jump on him anyway
for the knuckle, ball but this couldn't handle. It the stolen,

(02:17:46):
base one, ball one strike To. Sadanio Now, morgan who
leads The majors and runs scored with eighty down at second.
Base he checks With Charlie, fox the manager of The,
giants is coaching at. Third this has walked out to

(02:18:07):
talk To wood and the organist here gets The braves
fans that for The Nation league. Fans lie Wants sadaniel
to do. Something he singled and scored ahead Of aaron's
home run last. Time Up Wood, ready it's up. High
if this cast had come up off his haunches to
grab that one up around the head Of. Sadaniel two,

(02:18:30):
balls one. Stripe What Carlin fisk does not want to
happen here is the pass, ball which with one art
would Put morgan over at third base and just a five,
ball good, story swing in the miss, fists hold on to.
It it's two, balls two. Strikes oliver is not kneeling on.

(02:18:54):
Deck he's standing on deck swinging the bat because of
that electrical. Star and we had no batting. Practice, Remember
oliver's not swung a baps In sunday's games two and
two and the three to two ball, game The American
league leads in the last of the eighth, knuckleball he
struck him out and Fist pole's onto it and immediately
looks out and down At morgan's.

With Santa. Kofax Jim simpson back In atlanta the ninth and.
Ning Reggie, jackson along With Bobby, gritz are the only
two men in The American league lineup to work the entire.
Game thus, Far jackson is up for the fourth. Time
he is two for, three The grass record on the
year aside from those fifteen saves and in twenty seven

(02:24:49):
games one three, lost four two point zero two or
in run. Average Facing jackson left tender and there's a,
strike the route is very, quiet and there's a swinging strike. Two,

(02:25:16):
well they're gonna start calling pretty, Soon. SANDY i think
they already have the Most Valuable player. Award Rojas, Palmer
perry gave up two. Runs could be the Winner aaron
for hitting the two run home. Run might be a
popular vote here In. Atlanta her and. Two but the
ballgame is not over. Yet jackson has a count of

(02:25:37):
two strikes at. Him the pitch is up high one and.

Say one two pitch just misses at the. Knees inside
it's two balls and two. Strikes American league, Three National league.
Two we are in the top of the ninth In.
England doug McGraw, pitches throws and strikes Out, jackson, swinging

(02:26:21):
the Fifth american leaguer to go down And Norm cash
up for the first. Time, cash a Former American league batting,
champion has been in The All Star game many times
before this. Time this, year he's hitting two fifty four
but has eighteen home runs and forty three. RBIs Like,

(02:26:43):
jackson is a left hander to face the left hand
of McGraw and takes ball. One Joe rudy waits on
deck as there's a strike called one. Ball one strike
has not been up. Yet bar working, quickly is back

(02:27:09):
at missus, again look sets a strike at the. Knees
cash didn't think so and land this was a little
slow with the call one, ball two. Strikes cash is
behind and their strike. Three, looking here Comes Joe. Rudy

(02:27:35):
rudy the open a's top fielder hit three hundred a
couple of years, ago but nowhere near that last, year
and then burst on the scene this year is a top.
Hitter he has since fallen, off no longer leads the,
league but is still very much in the, running with
a three zero five average in The American league three
twenty four that Of richie shindloom as the top mark as,

(02:27:57):
compared for, example the three fifty five By sdania on
The nationalist two out of the ninth. Inning McCaw ready
And rudy watching the low that's fallen.

Speaker 8 (02:28:06):
TOO i think the difference in batting averages in The
america And National league has to be attributed in a
great part to the fact that The National league has
so many more artificial in fields and artificial playing. Fields
the ball gets through much, quicker and their more base.
Hits especially In houston Where sadonia is, playing HiT's the.

Speaker 1 (02:28:24):
Hardest and the fastest in.

Speaker 8 (02:28:25):
BASEBALL i, think and everybody felt for a long time
that somebody In houston should lead the league any year
now because of those the astro turn.

Speaker 1 (02:28:33):
There basketball from McGraw is. Over it's one in one.
Thing he's ready to throw. Again this ball is laces
to the right side over the glove Of. May rudy
on his way around first, Base oliver into the hole
to pick it, up and seeming in the second base
Is rudy with a slide and the double two out
Double Lee may gave it to a big leaf And

(02:28:57):
lee is run over six feet to all times lead,
perfectly but the ball was just hit too high for.
Him and Now Bobby, grich you Like Reggie, jackson has
gone all the. Way he's zero for, three hasn't hit
the ball out of the infield. Yet baltimore youngster with
a great future in his First All star, game facing

(02:29:20):
the left hand of, McGraw watches the strike rich that's
right handed and insurance ron Which i'm sure That American
league would love to. Have Joe rudy is down at second.
Base gral's. Ready this one hits and bounces off the

(02:29:40):
chest that sang in after it hit in front of
the plate. Man he picks it up quickly And rudy
is going. Nowhere one, ball one, strike two. Out in
the ninth, hell McGraw whipped her for the pickoff, play

(02:30:01):
but there was nobody to throw it too for the
Pickoff All Star, game AND i GUESS i was just
in the craw doing his own. THING i doubt that
they worked on that because they never had time to
work on. Nothing one ball to, strike he just whirled
around And rudy got at a race, back But spire
was anchored at short in more than second one, ball
two strikes, well taking a lot of. Time now throws

(02:30:33):
it is down low, grips gave it the little wrist,
movement but did not bring the bat. Around it's two and,
two which that time actually brought his wrists, forward but
never broke his wrists and started the bat around two

(02:30:54):
to two. Pits he striked, enough swinging. Well he struck
out the, side But rudy got a double in. Between no,
runs No, eric what it up the second for the
last of the. Night But i'm almost the last test
for the last of leagueague lead three to. Two I'm Kyle.
