The.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
In the heart of Humacao, puerto Rico.
There lived a young man namedJohnny.
Johnny's girlfriend had apenchant for horror films,
always seeking the thrill andthe suspense they offered always
seeking the thrill and thesuspense they offered.
One evening, after watching aparticularly spying, chilling
movie with his girlfriend forthe very first time, johnny

(00:51):
decided to call it a night.
The film had left an unsettlingimpression on him and he could
still feel the remnants of fearas he climbed into his bed.
As he lay there, trying toshake off the eerie feeling, he
heard a soft thud coming fromhis closet door.

(01:12):
It was so faint that he thoughthe might have imagined it,
dismissing it as a figment ofhis imagination.
He tried to sleep, but then heheard it again.
This time it was louder, accompanied by a darker mood
that seemed to be carried by thewind.
His heart pounded in his chestas he dug under the shelter of

(01:36):
his bed sheets.
Everything was as it should be.
Nothing out of place, hethought.
Suddenly, and after hearinganother sound coming from the
closet door, johnny decided topeek through the textiles to see
what was happening.
It was quick, almostimperceptible, but he was sure

(01:57):
he saw it.
He turned his head to see thatthe closet door had opened by
itself.
His pulse quickened, his breathhit in his throat.
He rose from bed and ranquickly to the closet door and
closed it.
The room suddenly felt colder.
A chill ran down his spine ashe pulled his blanket closer.

(02:20):
He could see his breath in theair, which was strange for a
summer night in Puerto Rico.
Then, out of nowhere, thethought returned once again.
The door swung open by itself.
He could hear his own heartbeat, loud and clear, in the silent
room.
He could not understand whatwas happening.

(02:43):
After gathering his composureand strength, johnny returned to
the door to have it closed oncemore, but this time he placed
one of his boots in the slidingdoor rail.
But just when he thought thingscouldn't get any scarier, his
closet door began to shake.
With a loud and deep thud itcreaked open once more.

(03:06):
He held his breath, his eyeswide in fear.
He reached for his phone, turning on the flashlight, but
there was nothing there.
As quickly as he had started, everything stopped.

(03:32):
The room returned to its normaltemperature and the closet door
was closed.
Johnny heard the lawnmowerrunning as his dad worked with
some landscaping in the backyard.
He could hear his dad askinghim.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Tell me, how did you sleep my child?
Well, to be honest, not toowell.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Johnny replied.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
He then heard his father's voice one more time
saying that is because you aredoing something that you should
not be doing.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Johnny felt a bit guilty.
He knew what his father meant.
It was clear that exploring thedark subjects in a scary movie
was bad for him.
He shouldn't have done it.
After the scary and unsettlingevents of the previous night,
Johnny finally got back on hisfeet and prepared himself for
the day.
But as soon as he faced hisfather in the kitchen for

(04:30):
breakfast, he took the courageto ask him about his comment.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
What did you mean by what you said to me earlier, dad
?
I didn't get it, okay.
What did you mean by what yousaid to me, john?
I mean, I'm quite a bit losthere.
I'm not following what you toldme.
Dad, remember About me doingsomething I shouldn't be doing
when you were cutting grass backthere?

(04:56):
What did you mean by it?

Speaker 2 (04:58):
The reply from his father changed Johnny forever.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
John, I just got home from the store.
I was not doing landscaping orcutting the grass.
That is the lack of a neighbordoing that.
I was not even here.
I did not speak to you.
Someone else did, though.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Surely what Johnny felt was an advice from an
invisible helper giving him somecounseling, maybe even from
above.
After all, there have been manystudies concerning the effects
of watching horror films for theminds of young men like him.
In fact, in a study conductedby Michaela Holmes, clinical
psychologist, dr Natalie Scanlonwith the Texas Tech Health and

(05:41):
Human Sciences Center, said whenkids are exposed to excessively
scared movies, images or evenhaunted houses, they tend to
have some of the symptoms ofacute stress disorder or
post-traumatic stress disorder.
Dr Scanlon explained thephenomenon of being scared is an
experience that all humans canrelate to.

(06:03):
According to Dr Scanlon, however, people process fear in
similar situations differently.
Let's face it there is nobiblical direct verse that
identifies watching a horrorfilm as a sin.
However, paul tells theCorinthians in 1 Corinthians
10.23, I have the right to doanything, you say, but not

(06:26):
everything is beneficial.
I have the right to do anything, but not everything is
constructive.
Furthermore, ephesians 5.8 saysFor you were once darkness, but
now you are light in the Lord.
Live as children of light.
There is quite enough evidencethat is recommended not to

(06:48):
engage in such experiences, eventhough they do appear as benign
and seemingly harmless, likewatching a movie?
Well, a horror movie.
But this is precisely how theenemy of souls prepares his
attacks by simply usingsomething that seems harmless
and benign and turning it into amethodical, slow weapon of

(07:09):
destruction.
I am not saying that weshouldn't be watching any horror
films, but all I would like toshare is that perhaps it could
do us more harm than benefitingus.
I would only ask you a simplequestion.
With this true story andepisode I am sharing with you
today, if it's not a sin andunimportant for us to watch

(07:29):
horror movies, especially in theminds of young men like Johnny,
then why was he reprimanded byit?
Or, even more importantly, ifhis father was not the one
reprimanding him that day, thenwho did it?
That should be a good sign, right?
I believe so too.
Not the one reprehending himthat day, then who did it?
That should be a good sign, right?

Speaker 1 (07:54):
I believe so too.
