Welcome back, I'm your host,makita.
I want to thank you so much forsharing your time, your space
and, of course, your amazingenergy with me today.
I am so grateful to be herewith you diving into another
conversation that I hope willinspire you, uplift you and help
take you to the next level inwhatever that is and what it
means to you.

(01:53):
So a few years ago at aconference, I met this amazing
lady.
She was in her late 50s and shewas radiating this quiet
confidence that just drew peopleto her, and I'm sure you know
what I mean.
You've ever met someone thatjust exuded confidence in this

(02:13):
quiet, but this way that it wasjust like so authentic and so
calming that it was just likeyou wanted to be in their space.
And as we were talking, I askedher about robotics and she
shared that she spent 30 yearsas a corporate accountant, a

(02:38):
career that paid the bills butleft her feeling empty and
unfulfilled.
Then she said, at the age of 55, after a health scare, she
pivoted.
She enrolled in culinary school, something she'd always dreamed
of but never dared to pursue.
And today she runs a smallcatering business specializing

(03:01):
in dishes inspired by hergrandmother's recipes.
Growing up, and as she wastelling me this story, I mean
her eyes sparkled, like youcould see the complete joy and
happiness that she felt.
She said you know what?
I'm not just cooking, I'msharing love.
And her story just reminds methat we are never too late to
pivot, transform or step intowhatever purpose that fits your

(03:27):
soul and makes you happy.
Which brings me to today'stopic pivoting at any age,
trusting the process to findwhat brings you joy, because
life is a journey of discoveryand sometimes the path we're on
no longer feels right.
I'm sure you've been in acareer, no matter what the age

(03:50):
was, that you felt like thisisn't it?
Like there has to be more, andwhether you're 25, 75, pivoting
is about dreaming out loud, without limits, is about
dreaming out loud without limits.
I had this conversation with myyoungest daughter not too long
ago where I asked her well,actually, I didn't ask her, I

(04:11):
dared her to dream her biggest, wildest dream, with no limits.
I wanted her to think aboutwhat her life could be if she
just dared to forget about money, cost everything, and she could
just live her life out loud inany way that she felt would

(04:32):
bring her joy.
What would it look like, whatwould it feel like, and who
would be there with her in thosemoments?
And I told her you know what?
Take a moment and really thinkabout this.
If you're not quite sure andyou really can't feel it or
visualize it, every day you getup.
I want you to think about thatfeeling of living and dreaming

(04:52):
limitless what you would bedoing.
I really truly feel that if youdream it long enough, if you
visualize it, you can bring thatdream into reality.
It's about trusting that you'recapable of the impossible and
embracing the transformationthat leads you to joy.

(05:14):
Now, sometimes these pivotshappen by choice.
We decide okay, this is notfulfilling me, this is not the
life that I expected, I'm goingto try something else.
And yet there are other timeswhere they're born out of
necessity, whether that's a jobloss, a health crisis or a

(05:36):
moment of clarity that you justcan't ignore.
Whatever the catalyst, a pivotis a bold step toward aligning
your life with what trulymatters to you.
So, before we dive into all thejuicy details and not only do I
share how you can start makingthis happen, but some of life

(05:58):
lessons that I had to endure tohelp me pivot, because we're all
in this process of pivoting.
We had moments where we pivotedafter high school, after
college, after you had kids.
There's always a pivot and atransformation.
It's just what we do with thoseopportunities that make us who
we are.
So we're going to groundourselves with an affirmation to

(06:21):
carry us through.
Okay, our affirmation today saysI am capable of creating a life
that lights me up, no matterwhere I start or how old I am.
Now I want you to say it withme and I want you to feel it
deep in your bones and I wantyou to let it guide you as we
explore this topic.

(06:42):
Okay, so let's say it togetherI am capable of creating a life
that lights me up, no matterwhere I start or how old I am.
All right, now let's dive in.
Let's talk about pivoting atany age, because I feel like, no

(07:03):
matter where you are, it startswith dreaming out loud, without
limits, because too often webox ourselves in with should'ves
and can'ts.
I should have stayed in thisjob because it's stable.
I can't start over because I'mtoo old.
But what happens when you letgo of those limits?

(07:25):
What if you allowed yourself todream as big as you did when
you were a kid?
If you allowed yourself todream as big as you did when you
were a kid, maybe you've alwayswanted to write a novel, start
a business, travel the world.
Dreaming out loud means givingyourself permission to imagine a

(07:47):
life that excites you, withoutimmediately worrying about the
how.
It's about tapping into whatsets your heart on fire,
trusting that the path willreveal itself.
Now I know you're like I needthis job.
It pays the bills.
Or I don't even know where tobegin.
I don't know how to start.
The start is the dreaming.

(08:08):
It's the saying it out loud, even if it's to yourself.
It's the writing it down inyour journal.
It's creating a vision board tosay this is my dream, this is
the life that I want.
At that point we're notworrying about or trying to
figure out how we're going tomake it happen.
We're just allowing ourselvesto imagine that life, because

(08:33):
the truth is, most of the timewe don't know how we're going to
make anything happen.
I mean, think about all thetimes when you did not know how
you were going to get through tothe next day and yet somehow
you made it.
Somehow there was a way, somehow you figured it out, or
somebody was placed into yourlife that helped you get to that

(08:54):
next level, get to the nextstarting point.
So take away the figuring outhow and just concentrate on the
dreaming of the possibility.
But now, if we're real, you knowpivoting isn't always a choice.
Sometimes life forces us totransform.

(09:17):
Maybe you faced a layoff, adivorce, or a moment when you
looked in the mirror and thoughtthis isn't me anymore.
These moments are painful, canbe powerful.
They can be the catalyst thatchanged your whole life.
You know, I was talking to afriend and he was telling me

(09:37):
that he recently got let go ofhis job after 15 years, and they
were devastated.
It was like their identity wastied to that role.
Role, but necessity pushed themto pivot and they started
volunteering at this local youthcenter, something they'd never

(09:59):
done before.
That experience led them totrain as a life coach and now
they help other people navigatetheir own life transitions.
No-transcript.
I just want you to know thatsometimes that life happens and

(10:22):
it's what we do in that momentthat can carry us through to the
next level.
I mean even for myself, pivoting and transforming.
I can't tell you how many timesI've pivoted and transformed
and I feel like I'm always inthe midst of a transformation.
I mean, when I first started out, before nursing, I worked as a

(10:44):
security guard and I did thatfor years and I wanted to get
into nursing and it just feltlike impossible.
When I talked to people thathad went to nursing school or
had thought about going tonursing school themselves, I got
the same answer it's impossibleto do that and work.
Well, I had small kids, so Ihad to work.

(11:04):
That was something that had tobe done.
I could not afford to not workand pay the bills and take care
of my two girls.
But I was like but I want to bea nurse.
And I let that dream die.
That's how life happens, right?
Something comes back to us,that seed that was planted,

(11:26):
someone reminds us that you knowwhat, why not do it?
And then at that moment, Ithink I was talking to someone.
It was like why don't you lookinto this yourself?
And I was like, yeah, why am Iletting someone else dictate
what I do?
So I reached out to the school,I talked to the counselor, I

(11:46):
went down and I had thismeaningful conversation and then
I went to my supervisor andthey were like you know, there
are ways that this can work.
So I found out everything thatI needed to know and I went to
school and I didn't let anyoneelse the how, how I was going to

(12:08):
do this stop me, because I waslike, if I got this far, we'll
figure out the rest along theway.
And then even into pivoting, into podcasting that was never
my goal to podcast, but it was aspark, it was a pivot when
someone said to me you would begreat at this, you should think

(12:32):
about it, and that someone wasmy husband.
It's always sometimes thatsometimes we don't see what
other people see in us, so it'salways a great reminder to have
people around you that believein you more than you believe in
yourself.
And it's also about trustingthe process, because when we

(12:55):
pivot and trust the process, itcan make anything possible.
It's about believing you'recapable of the impossible.
Age experience or lack thereofdoesn't define your potential.
I mean, consider Vera Wang, whodidn't design her first wedding
dress until she was 40.

(13:15):
Ray Kroc, who turned McDonald'sinto a global empire in his 50s
.
These stories aren't outliers.
They're reminders thatcapability isn't bound by time.
You don't need to have it allfigured out, you just need to
believe you can learn, grow andadapt.
That belief, paired with action, turns the impossible into

(13:39):
reality.
And I have to stress action, because you can dream all day,
but until you take the firststep into action, that's when
you start seeing things happen.
Because I truly believe thatwhen you start to believe that
you can do anything, when youbelieve that you're capable of
it, even if you don't know whatthat first step should be and

(14:03):
you're just like you know what,I'm just going to wing it and
put myself out there.
I'm just going to do this thing.
I believe the universe makessure that there are people
placed in your life that helpyou.
Every step of the way, you geta little bit of this from
someone else.
You meet this other person thatreminds you of this.
I just truly believe theuniverse works together to help

(14:29):
you reach your goal, to liveyour purpose.
Now, of course, pivoting doesn'tmean abandoning responsibility.
If you have a family, bills orother obligations, your pivot
might look like carving out anhour a day to work on your
passion project or taking anonline course while keeping your

(14:52):
job, and that's how I started.
I took some online courses atfirst when I was going into
nursing school Anything that Icould do online first.
That's why I started.
It's about starting where youare with what you have.
Small, consistent steps buildmomentum and as you move forward
you will find that joy isn'tjust in the destination, it's in

(15:14):
the process of becoming who youwere meant to be.
Now, before we wrap up, let'stouch on the emotional side of
pivoting, because change, evenwhen it's exciting, can bring
fear, doubt or grief for thelife you're leaving behind.
And that's normal.
Trust me, fear is definitelynormal.
Doubt and grief because youknow, especially if you lost a

(15:40):
job that had become youridentity, and sometimes that
happens, like your whole purposeseems to be wrapped up in the
identity of a profession and youforget that you are more than
just that profession.
You are more than just a titlethat someone gave you Way more.
But it's okay to experienceloss, but give yourself grace to

(16:05):
feel those emotions.
If journaling is something thatyou've done in the past that
works, continue to journal.
Talk to a trusted friend.
You can seek a mentor, and thething about mentorship is.
I know a lot of people thinkthat you have to meet someone
and that person be your mentor, but not necessarily so.

(16:26):
You may not even personallyknow your mentor, but there are
people that I constantly look upto that continue to inspire me
and be my mentor without me everhaving to meet them.
Some of my mentors LoveyAjayi-Jones, sarah Jakes-Roberts
those are people that areconstantly shaping the way and

(16:52):
reminding me that anything ispossible.
So surround yourself withpeople who believe in your
dreams and it can make all thedifference.
Okay, trust me, having someonein your corner saying you can do
this, even on the days when youdoubt it and you don't know how
and you are so fearful and youthink, oh my gosh, what am I

(17:14):
doing, having that person theresaying you got this, I'm with
you, can change everything.
And, the most important thing, don't forget to celebrate your
wins, no matter how small.
The first time I got my firstdownload listener, I celebrated.
I mean, I celebrated like crazy, because that meant that was

(17:37):
one person who heard what I hadto say and was like thank you,
and for that I'm, like I aminternally grateful.
Thank you to that one person.
Thank you to the three, thefour, the 25, the hundreds, like
thank you, all right.

(17:57):
So finish your first painting,be amazing.
Sign up for that codingbootcamp.
You're a rock star.
Every step is a progress.
So just signing up for a classis a win.
You took a first step.
Celebrate that.
You know you spoke to acounselor.

(18:20):
Celebrate that.
Celebrate everything.
Now, as we close here, there arethree key points I want you to
take with you.
Remember to dream withoutlimits.
Let go of can't and imagine alife that excites you.
Two trust the process.

(18:42):
Trust the process.
Pivots are messy, but everystep forward counts.
Third point believe in yourcapability.
You are never too old or tooinexperienced to chase what
brings you joy.
This week, I want you to takeone small step towards your

(19:03):
pivot.
Write down a dream you've beenholding back.
Sign up for a class or have aconversation with someone who
inspires you, whatever it is.
Start where you are and trustthat you are capable of the
impossible.
Now, if this episode resonatedwith you, please leave a review.
It helps others find the showand to join our community of

(19:25):
dreamers and doers.
Don't forget to tune in nexttime for more conversations to
spark your soul and fuel you tokeep going Now.
That is all the tea that I haveto spill today.
