Lindsay Fluckiger (00:00):
Hello and
welcome back to Tile Trends,
your go-to podcast for thelatest in tile design and home
renovation.
I'm your host, Lindsay Flukiger, and today we're excited to
welcome back a very specialguest, Janelle Payne, also known
as Nailgun Nelly.
J it's so great to have youback.
Janelle Payne (00:18):
It's so great to
be back.
I absolutely love chatting withyou guys every time, so I'm
happy to be here.
Lindsay Fluckiger (00:24):
Awesome.
The feeling is mutual for sure.
The last time we delved intoyour origin story as a nurse,
mom, diy enthusiast, we talkedabout your fantastic RV kitchen
renovation with tile clubs, mintpalisades, picket tiles.
Give us the scoop.
How are those tiles holding upfor you?
Janelle Payne (00:43):
Oh, they're
absolutely perfect.
I still get asked where I gotthem all the time, but they work
out perfect.
They are a highlight in ourlittle tiny kitchen and, yeah,
it was my first time everinstalling real tile in an RV
and we did this back in was itMay, I'm not sure, but it was
(01:05):
like in the springtime andthey've held up perfectly.
There's absolutely no shift, and so I fully intend on going
real tile all the way.
Lindsay Fluckiger (01:17):
That's great
news, yeah, To our listeners.
If you go back and check outthe previous episode with
Janelle, we go over all thingsher RV renovation, including the
tile installation but give usreally quick the rundown on what
you chose to do as far assealing or grouting the tile in
this situation.
Janelle Payne (01:39):
Yeah, because
there is so much movement within
an RV, I didn't want to do thetraditional mortar with grout
because I've heard that and itmakes sense.
With going down the road shiftsin the walls, it could crack
potentially.
So I decided to take I can'tremember the brand exactly, I
(02:01):
think it's QuadMax, but it's asuper strong glue basically, but
it comes in like a big cock gunand I just glued them all in
place, used tile spacers thesame exact way, but instead of
the mortar I used a siliconecaulking as my grout, which is a
little more time consuming buttotally worth it because it is a
(02:25):
high flexibility and so withthe movement in an RV, you're
not going to worry about anystress, cracks and there hasn't
been absolutely any.
So it just allows movementshifts and yeah, and it's super
easy to clean that way and itlooks just as perfect as the day
I installed it.
But yeah, I'm super happy withhow it turned out.
Lindsay Fluckiger (02:48):
You'd never
know any different.
you did such a great job withthat, thank you.
So, Janelle, tell us about yourupcoming holiday giveaway and
how our listeners canparticipate.
Janelle Payne (03:03):
I'm so excited.
I had this idea last Christmasbut it came to me a little late.
It was already in the holidayseason, so I didn't get a chance
.
So I knew this year I was likeyou know, when it comes to
Christmas time, I want to plan areally awesome giveaway for my
followers, and so we're doingthe 12 Days of Christmas
giveaways, and Tile Club is oneof my 12 days.
(03:25):
So basically, you can tune into my stories starting December
1, and every day from December 1through December 12, I will
have a different brand that issponsoring a giveaway, and I've
worked with all of these brands.
I love them all and you justhave to watch my stories slide a
little bar and you get enteredin to win some amazing prizes.
(03:46):
So, super excited and I'm superexcited.
Tile Club is a part of it andpeople can get their hands on
some of your guys' style.
Lindsay Fluckiger (03:54):
We're excited
to participate.
We really appreciate the inviteto do that, because we will
link everything below,especially Janelle's Instagram.
You guys will have access toher social channels to make sure
you can participate.
I would love to talk about yourrecent project, the Home Gym
renovation, and I know you'vedone a way more since then and
(04:14):
in between, because you'realways busy and doing something
awesome with DIY.
But let's talk about that.
What motivated you to createthis specific space?
Janelle Payne (04:24):
So, man, do I
wish this was at my house.
This project I actually did atmy parents' house and it's
something I've been wanting todo for them for a while.
They have this perfect littlecutout area in their garage that
they had some gym equipment in,but it turned into like this
catch-all area and I wanted tomake a nice organized space with
(04:48):
their gym equipment so thatthey can have a space for them
to be able to work out at homeand I do definitely go and
borrow some of that sometimes aswell.
But I wanted to make it nice, like I wanted it to be a gym,
but I wanted it also to be kindof just like a cool, beautiful
place to walk into, and I endedup doing an entire wall of your
(05:12):
guys' Luna Art collection and Ilove it.
It is so stunning.
I love how it gave just like alittle glam to the space and
it's crazy.
It's like you look at the wholegarage, you're like, oh, it's a
garage, and then you look overhere and you're like, whoa, what
is this going on?
But it was really neat.
I had a different feature oneach wall and, yeah, it turned
(05:34):
out amazing.
Like I'm so happy with how itturned out, and it was
interesting because that wallthat I did all the tile on had
this central back that I had toget creative around, and so
that's why I ended up doing likea built-in to make it look more
homey and be able to hold allof their weight storage, but it
(05:58):
didn't look like a gym in thatsense, and so that's why I was
able to get away with puttingthe tile and just making it a
little fancier.
Lindsay Fluckiger (06:04):
It turned out
so beautifully, what I really
loved.
I know that you were pullingyour followers, too, to see like
which tile to go with, and itwas so interesting that that was
the one that caught everybody'seye, and I love that.
It's not like such a huge popof color, but it's just enough
to like still feel like serenebut eye catching at the same
time.
Janelle Payne (06:24):
I know that it
was so hard for me.
I've the slat tile, the Japan D, I believe it's called.
Oh man, I have just been dyingto use that and I love that
style.
We almost went with that, but Ifelt like we just needed that
pop of color and that kind ofshine and I'm really happy we
ended up going with that.
But yeah, I just love thelittle arcs.
(06:49):
Gives it a little more shineand a little more definition
than just your normal subwaytile.
And doing it vertically, moreof a modern stack, was different
for me and it worked out reallywell.
I'm really happy with how thatproject turned out.
Lindsay Fluckiger (07:03):
So, nems, in
general you think, oh, subway
tile is so basic.
But there's so many ways thatyou can stack the patterns and
then the colors and the textures, and the lunic collection has
the standard, and then the arcand you can mix and match, or
you can just do the arc and it'sjust we love it.
If you do end up going with theJapan D-slot, we should do a
bathroom together.
Janelle Payne (07:24):
Oh, I know, I
know, tell me about it.
I'm just a spot so beautiful.
Lindsay Fluckiger (07:31):
I love all of
that.
So, janelle, I have personallybeen enjoying your YouTube
channel and you actually createda tutorial on the gym
renovation.
Were there any challenges thatyou faced during this project?
Janelle Payne (07:46):
I think honestly,
my biggest hurdle of trying to
figure out how to make that shopor not shop vac but central vac
disappear but disappear whereyou're like.
Why is that cabinet there?
You know, I was able tocompletely hide it but it looks
purposeful and it took me awhile to wrap my brain around
that and I'm really happy withhow it turned out.
(08:09):
But I think I got really luckywith I mean, I did some brick
paneling.
That was the first time where Ihad to try and get the seams to
be able to match up well and Ithink it turned out really nice.
I was able to use more of likea sanded grout to mimic the
other grouting in it and itturned out really well.
(08:29):
Yeah, no, it was.
Lindsay Fluckiger (08:30):
I think the
vacuum thing was definitely the
hardest situation for me, but Ithink it turned out well, yeah
awesome, so tell us a little bitmore about what our viewers and
listeners can find in regardsto your YouTube channel.
Janelle Payne (08:46):
I went to a
conference this past July and
when I left it I was just likeso motivated to be able to do
the long format.
It's so different when you comefrom doing these short format
reels, where it's like littleblurbs of everything, to really
going into detail and I usuallydo that in my stories, but when
(09:06):
you're needing to film it forlong form, it's a really big
learning curve.
So I really try to put I makesure that I come out with a new
one every Monday at 9 AM and Ijust want to have it be another
resource for my followers.
I get asked a lot aboutdifferent tools I use, so I'm
trying to make it just more of aeducational platform for the
(09:28):
basics of a miter saw, thebasics of multi-tools.
So many people that follow mejust don't know simple things
about tools that in my mind I'mlike well, how do you not know
that?
But it's just second nature tome.
So it was really interestingbecause when I'd start my Tools
101 episodes, I felt like why amI telling people this?
Like, who really needs to knowthis?
(09:50):
I felt like I was just beingkind of silly, but I've gotten a
great response and there reallyis a need to just have that
basic knowledge.
If you do know nothing aboutany tool, I can always send
people to those longer formattutorials, and so I'm slowly
just trying to build up mycollection and work on my
(10:10):
editing as I go.
It's a learning curve.
Lindsay Fluckiger (10:13):
Awesome.
I think it's going so well.
I'm loving it.
I've watched everyone that'scome out since a few months or
since the time of the tutorialit's just been great.
I love watching and seeing thatwomen can step up.
We can learn these things, wecan do it.
We don't have to wait for theHoneydew list to be done.
So, absolutely, can you give usa sneak peek into any upcoming
(10:37):
projects that you may have?
Janelle Payne (10:39):
I have a really
big project going on right now
that right after this I'm goingto go out to, but I actually am
redoing another trailer.
I know, surprise, this one isactually it's for kind of a
bigger project that I don'treally want to talk about yet,
but it's going to be reallyexciting and I am trying a bunch
(11:04):
of new techniques that I'venever done.
I'm going more of aMediterranean kind of vibe, and
so I'm going to be dabbling withmicrocemit in a trailer which
is going to be new and we'll seehow it holds up.
But yeah, it's going to be areally cool experience because
(11:24):
I'm adding in a lot of newfeatures, like a farmhouse sink,
going copper, like justdifferent finishes.
I'm kind of on a tight deadline.
I'm hoping for sure I have tohave it done by March.
So and we're in demo right now, demo rebuilding.
So it's kind of it's an old oneagain, 1970s, but after that
(11:44):
I'm really hoping that I canfinally give myself my bougie
workshop.
I want a workshop, so bad, andso once this is done, that's
like my goal is to we'll see Imight possibly do like a storage
container conversion or justbuild one on our own.
We'll see what happens.
(12:04):
So it's going to be big andit's going to be great and I
can't wait and it's going to bevery bougie, oh yes.
Lindsay Fluckiger (12:11):
Of course I
know.
So exciting for thoseespecially who didn't hear the
previous episode, where we gotto know who you are, kind of the
heart of DIY, which was just soinspiring.
Tell us a little bit about yourtips for juggling being a mom,
a nurse and a social mediainfluencer on top of being a
(12:32):
DIYer.
What are some tips that you cangive to our listeners who might
be in a similar boat or mightbe exploring the idea of doing
something similar to what you do?
Janelle Payne (12:42):
Yeah, I would try
and be a travel influencer.
No, I'm just kidding, I'm like.
Sometimes I think I'm like, whydidn't I do that route?
I just get to go on trips.
I absolutely love what I do.
I'm kidding, but honestly, Ithink I might have said it Like
I live by.
I think I said it in our lastepisode, I'm not sure.
(13:03):
But so many times we look at ourto-do list and we're just like,
oh, my god, how am I going todo this?
But it's like you just chipaway, be like you have 5,000
things on your brain, but let'sjust focus on this one because
it'll take it off your plate.
And once you do that, yourealize like, oh, I'm actually
knocking stuff out and it's justeasier to focus on a task at
(13:26):
hand, like, what do you want toget done this day to have it be
attainable?
And people just I think that'swhat it was.
I think the quote is peoplewill underestimate what they can
do in a day, but underestimatewhat they can achieve in a year,
because you don't realize like, looking back, you can do so
much.
It seems like you're drowning.
(13:47):
But really stop and look atwhat you've accomplished and
you're going to be like dang.
Wow, ok, I guess I am doing this, but yeah, I don't know.
I mean, I frequently have tosometimes just take a break and
gather myself, because there'salways like that mom guilt of
like, oh, I need to not go workon that project, I need to be
(14:08):
here with them.
But, like I tend to do a lot oftimes, I'll just bring them in
and be like here, here's ascrewdriver, just go do that,
and then you just start talkingand hanging out.
You just have to figure out howyou can get things done in the
time frame of whatever you'redoing.
I usually do all my editing atJiu-Jitsu practice, you know
like, and so I just try and seeokay, this is the time they're
(14:30):
in school, so I'm gonna build,I'll do the editing, I'll do the
writing, like when I'm withthem, but I'm not technically
with them, it's just constantbattle.
But I keep reminding myselfit's only this little bit of
time, and soon I'm gonna haveall the time in the world.
Lindsay Fluckiger (14:46):
Right, right,
oh, it's such good advice for
sure, and yes, the mommygill isso huge Always.
But I, you know, I find likeit's always quality over
quantity.
If I have 15 minutes, as longas I like, pour into them
everything I can in those 15minutes, their attention span is
just like okay next, and theygo into the next thing.
(15:08):
But then I know I've pouredeverything I can in that amount
of time and everything's fine,as opposed to just trying to
juggle it all or, like you know, cancel or push aside things
that really are important to me.
I'm still able to kind of fitthat in.
Janelle Payne (15:22):
So that's really
great and a lot of times it's
like with kids.
I feel like if you give themthat dedicated 10 minutes, 15
minutes, that's all they reallywant.
And then they're like okay, like I'm gonna go play now, but
it's like they were like, oh,okay, I have her attention.
It's almost like they won.
So, yes, okay, but yeah, youknow, what else is really
(15:44):
helpful if you do wanna be acontent creator, is having other
content creators that youbecome close with.
It was something that I was toldfor so many years and I'm like
I don't have like, how do youbecome friends with people like
that?
It's so possible.
It's like you reach out and Imean I have a good solid like.
There's like, I think, a groupof eight of us that I mean I
(16:06):
talk to them literally on thedaily and it's so nice, because
being a content creator there'snot really many jobs like that.
People don't understand it andhaving that other group of
like-minded individuals is goldand you can like really like,
bounce things off of them andjust feel normal, like, feel
(16:27):
like you can talk.
Lindsay Fluckiger (16:30):
So important
to have a community of people
that understand and can alsogive you insight into, like,
what works best and what doesn't, and vice versa.
That's great Now.
Thanks for sharing that.
I hope that our futureinfluencers out there are
getting this and taking note.
Oh, totally, yeah, well, andwe're gonna wrap this up.
I think we've covered all thegreat things about our
(16:52):
renovation, things that havehappened in the past, things
that are coming up.
Definitely wanna let ourlisteners know that we have some
exciting projects coming upwith Janelle as well, and an
exciting announcement that willbe coming in the new year.
So do be sure that you'refollowing Nelga Nelly on
Instagram and the Tile Club, andwe just so look forward to
seeing Janelle continue to be amover and shaker in the industry
(17:14):
.
Janelle Payne (17:15):
Oh, thank you so
much, and I am so excited about
everything that we have plannedfor the future and look forward
to it.
Lindsay Fluckiger (17:23):
Awesome.
Thanks so much for being on theshow today, Janelle, and we'll
talk soon.
All right, thank you.
