(02:28):
Okay, let's dive in.
You might be thinking why memorize a song when I can just use the music?
Well, there are many reasons to memorize a song.
If you've memorized the song, you can play it anytime, anywhere, without having to lug around
the music.
And when performing, it's also easier to engage with your audience if you're not needing
(02:54):
to look at the music.
Here's my 7 simple steps to memorizing a song.
1.
Choose a song to memorize.
It's easier to memorize a song you really like.
When you're trying to decide which one to memorize, the steps are easier if you're already
(03:14):
familiar with and like the song.
2.
Listen to the song as much as possible on your device.
Actively listen to the song, which means singing along, tap your foot, keep the rhythm while
you're listening, you get the idea.
It will help you to be more familiar with the nuances of the song.
(03:38):
Then passively, too, that is, while you're doing something else, like when you're driving
or cooking.
This will help you solidify the song in your mind.
Step 3.
Research to find the lyrics and either the chords or tablature.
Be sure to try out a few versions so you can choose one that fits your playing abilities
(04:03):
and voice.
Hey everyone, I'm super excited we've been really busy here in my studio getting ready
because in April we'll be launching tips for guitar playing success on YouTube podcasts.

to us guitarists, but I'll be able to show you what I'm talking about, too.
Stay tuned, the first episode will air on April 10th.

The link is in the show notes and let's make some music magic happen.
(05:17):
Step 4.
Practice the song over and over playing along with the recorded version.
That will help you become even more comfortable with how to play the song and loop the song
so you can keep replaying it as often as possible.
Step 5.
(05:37):
Learning how to remember the lyrics.
Keep in mind that lyrics typically tell a story and notice in the song you've chosen the
verse chorus pattern.
Oftentimes the chorus is the same, which makes it easier to remember the chorus.
The verses usually change but again it's typically telling a story.
(06:02):
Step 6.
Focus on the chords or tablature of the song, only no lyrics.
A good way to do this is to hum the tune and play the chords or tabs.
Again, no words.
And step 7.
Try playing the song without anything in front of you.
(06:24):
Put the music nearby though in case you need to just take a quick glance.
And if you find that you're stumbling a little bit more than you'd like to, then go
back through the steps, particularly 2 through 7 since you've already chosen the song.
Repetition is the best way to memorize anything.
(06:46):
So let me repeat that.
Repetition is the best way to memorize anything.
When you take your time through these steps then before you know it, you'll know it.
Alrighty, to get started, go to step 1, choose the song and off you go.
(07:07):
I hope this episode's tip has helped you to continue expanding your guitar playing skills
and knowledge.
