Touchdown Jaguars.
Welcome to the TouchdownJaguars podcast.
Here are your hosts, jamesJohnson and Phil Smith.
(01:08):
All right, ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the Touchdown
Jaguars podcast.
It has been a while butnonetheless I am James Johnson
here for episode 115 here and Iam very excited to be back after
a long hiatus.
What has it been?
(01:30):
At least a month since we'verecorded and I think we have
mentioned, you know, in the pastthat the spring we would kind
of take some time to rejuvenateall that good stuff and then
kind of pick things back uparound the summer.
So here we are in the summerand hopefully we will be able to
pick things up.
Now.
Phil will be working a lot onthe Wait For it podcast and me
(01:53):
and him talked about that andyou know when football ramps up
he'll be able to join me.
So I'll be doing probably a fewsolos, you know, at least for a
month, maybe a little bit more,I may reach out and have a
guest on, occasionally a guestco-host, and you know a guest in
terms of a guest to the podcastas well.
(02:16):
We'll cross that bridge laterdown the road, but I wanted to
really get out a episode, sinceit's been a while, and let you
all know that we haven'tforgotten about you all and we
appreciate the love and supportthat you all have been giving us
at the touchdown jaguarspodcast for many, many years.
All of that said, as you allknow if I haven't said it
already, which I probably haveI'm james johnson.
(02:39):
You can follow me at sportsGrind underscore Dunn on Twitter
, and you can follow my co-host,phil Barrera, at Phil the
Filipino on Twitter as well, andyou can also follow the
(03:01):
Touchdown Jaguars podcast handle, which is touchdownjadwarscom,
where we put a variety ofcontent on there, whereas
archived episodes of thispodcast, written content, so on
and so forth.
So, all of that said, we willget into today's episode, and I
think it was only fair.
(03:21):
You know I got a list of topicsthat I wrote down, um, that we
could talk about, but I think itwas only fair for us to cover
minicamp, because we didn'treally talk about it others,
aside from maybe some tweets andwhatnot but we didn't really
talk about that in terms of anaudio format and getting that
out and uh, by the way, whileI'm at it and while it's on my
(03:43):
mind, um, feel free.
We also have now moved into theTik TOK realm and, uh, just the
short video footage realm, um,so we'll also have stuff on
YouTube shorts and, uh,instagram.
But feel free to follow our TikTOK page as well, which I've
put out at least about fourvideos on because we wanted to
(04:08):
get a video format going as well.
That's kind of something thatthe podcast is lacked, right, a
lot of our stuff is audio driven, so we want to get some video
content out there and you know,a lot of people have shown the
tiktok page some love and it'sonly growing by the day.
But, yeah, follow us attdjagspod there and, um, you
(04:32):
know, let us know what you think, check out the videos, send us
your suggestions, all that goodstuff.
But back to what I was saying um, I think it's only fair that we
do an episode, being that wereally haven't discussed the
whole aspect of minicamp or OTAsreally on the podcast, as
opposed to, you know, on theTikTok page and on Twitter and
(04:54):
on social media, that we, youknow, discuss minicamp in some
way shape or form for thepodcast.
So that's what we're going todo here, and the topic that I
settled on was three playersflying under the radar for the
Jacksonville Jaguars afterminicamp.
I thought about doing anepisode where we would predict
(05:19):
the 53-man roster, but I want todo a little bit more research
before I go into an episode um,that would have a lot of context
to it, like that one.
So I settled on this topic ofthree under the radar players
coming out of minicamp andheading into training camp and,
(05:40):
um, yeah, we will go over a listof players here.
I settled on and you know, ifyou have been looking at a tick
tock page, my hat has beentipped on two of these, right,
but I said I settled on twoplayers from the offensive side
and one player on the defensiveside, so we'll get right into it
(06:02):
.
I will not hold you all up toolong for this episode, but the
first player that I have on thelist is Monteric Brown.
So we'll start on the defensiveside and then the other two
players will be on the offensiveside.
So, monteric Brown he now he'sa guy that I haven't mentioned
(06:22):
on the TikTok page.
So this, this is a little bitof new content in terms of stuff
that I haven't put out therealready.
But yeah, monteric Brown is aguy that you know when you look
at all of the reports and all ofthe you know beat writers who
do a good job covering theJacksonville Jaguars and those
(06:44):
who were able to attend thepractices and they weren't able
to attend all of the practices, neither were the fans, and we'll
get more of a look at the teamin training camp as well, and
you know, of course, that's ourplan to provide training camp
content for you all too, when itarrives.
But you know when the reporterswere able to go there, you know
I've seen many reporters eitherspeak or you know, put out there
(07:08):
in a tweet or in articleshighly of how Monteric Brown has
looked, since you know hethinks that Monteric and I might
just be paraphrasing him here, and please forgive me if I
(07:31):
misquote him, that's not whatI'm trying to do here Shout-outs
to John Shipley but he feltlike Monteric was like the most
active cornerback or DB in termsof getting his hands on, you
know, passes.
So that's a good sign and, if Ican recall, I was listening to
T-Wigs podcast to locked onJaguar Shout outs to him.
(07:52):
He mentioned how Monteric Brownhas looked and that you know
it's possible.
You know you will see MonterreyBrown as a starter.
Maybe you know and again I'mjust paraphrasing here, so you
know a lot of people speakhighly of him.
Anthony Campanile has spokehighly of him too, just kind of.
(08:14):
You know basically in a postgame or a post practice presser
kind of mentioned that you knowhe's shown up consistently, if I
can recall, and you know he'skind of been one of those guys
that kind of fit the mold ofTyson Campbell, a veteran player
who just has been consistentthroughout the process, right,
(08:35):
and shout outs to Tyson Campbelltoo.
But all of that said, theemergence of Monteric Brown is
an interesting developmentbecause at one point in time I
was very high of Monteric Brownis an interesting development
because at one point in time Iwas very high on Monteric Brown.
And then you know we sufferedthrough terrible defense with
our last regime and we sufferedthrough terrible decisions in
(08:58):
general with our last regime, whether that was on Doug
Peterson's part or TrentBaalke's part.
It was just hard to watch theorganization in general.
But somehow we made it throughit.
And you know, throughout thatprocess, especially last year
under the previous in the, youknow, one time one year
defensive coordinator in RyanNilsen, you know it looked like
(09:21):
a lot of the guys, first andforemost, didn't want to be
there and at times it looks likethe effort wasn't there.
So you know that applied to alot of players and not
necessarily all of them, but alot of players.
And one thing that I'm noticing,at least in the early stages
and it's always this way in theearly stages because you're just
getting introduced to the newdefensive coordinator, but I
(09:52):
think this is something thatwill be long term too is that
the players really like AnthonyCampanile, you know, and the big
one of the big thingsculturally about this team right
, that we've discussed isthey've come into the situation
saying like, hey, we want ourplayers to be nothing more than
themselves and we're going toallow them to do that, and you
know that's kind of on thecoaches to allow them to do that
(10:13):
, especially when it comes tothings on the field, and do what
they do best, and everythingwill fit basically like a puzzle
.
And when everything fits like apuzzle, you have a complete
puzzle, you have a complete teamwhere you know you'll have this
mixture of people thatcontributes or does something
(10:33):
well in every aspect of what youneed on defense and what you
need on offense and what youneed on special teams, and what
you have is a fully functionalteam because you have these
different pieces who arefocusing on what they do best,
which may make up for theweakness of another player.
So you have all these piecesthat basically complement each
(10:57):
other and for the players whoare lacking in some aspect of
their game, that's okay becausethere could be another player on
the team who thrives with thatspecific ability.
And again, it makes a completepuzzle.
And it sounds like to me that, defensively, in terms of this
scheme, and especially when youhear the players talk about
(11:18):
Anthony Campanile and you hearthem the personnel talk, you
know, in terms of you knowCampanile himself and James
Gladstone and Tony Bocelli andLiam Cohen, when you hear them
talk, it's all about, you know, putting the players in position
to do what they do best andthrive at it.
(11:41):
And you could tell that a lot ofthat is going on in the early
stages of the game or the earlystages of this new regime change
, because coming out of OTAs,especially when you look at the
skilled players, which OTAs isdesigned to kind of make the
skilled players stand out morethan you know the players in the
(12:01):
trenches.
You have a lot of people comingout of OTAs feeling a little
bit more than you know theplayers in the trenches.
You have a lot of people comingout of OTAs feeling a little
bit more comfortable, at leastagain, I'm talking about skilled
players here coming out of OTAsmore comfortable than we've
maybe seen in the last few years.
And again, that's because youknow the staff is putting them
in position to go on the fieldand do what they do best and do
(12:24):
what they feel most comfortablewith doing.
So I think that applies toMonterrey Brown, and not just
Monterrey, though.
You hear and you hear a lotabout you know how the
cornerbacks in general didn'tlook bad at all.
Right, tyson Campbell you knowthat was one of the guys I
mentioned in my TikTok as aplayer who is coming out of OTAs
(12:47):
on fire.
Basically, you know you hear alot about how the impact of
Anthony Campanile has helpedTyson Campbell.
Right, and Anthony Campanilehas said it himself as well.
Right, that you know Tyson isnow more focused on something
that we've complained about fora very long time as fans and
media members and all this stuff.
But he's more focused on thetechnical aspect and I think I
(13:11):
heard Liam Cohen say this toothe technical aspect of his game
.
In that same post practicepresser that I mentioned earlier
, you knowanile and I put atweet out about this was saying
that he's really fired up aboutTyson Campbell quote unquote and
he says that he's really workedon the key details, which to me
(13:35):
, rita, is the technical aspectof your game and things that
Tyson has kind of struggled within the past, right like um
reacting to receivers out of thetop of their routes, right and
um reacting to them the rightway in terms of coming off of
the line of scrimmage and so onand so forth, locating the ball,
(13:55):
things like that.
That's, that's what that readto me, and I'm mentioning that
because Campanile's effect looksto be not just one that's
impacting people on the top ofthe depth chart like Tyson
Campbell, but it also seems tobe impacting guys like Monterey
Brown.
(14:15):
When you hear and talk abouthow he's been very active in
breaking up passes, it sounds tome like they have put him in
the best position to thrive andput him in position to do what
he does best, and a lot ofpeople would say that's to be in
a position where he can kind ofkeep his eyes on the
(14:35):
quarterback, right.
So you know he'll be one ofthose guys I want to watch in
person when you know I go totraining camp and what have you.
But he is one of those namesthat's going under the radar in
a sense that, of course, alleyes are on Tyson Campbell,
because he's the number onecornerback on the team and he
got paid a lot of money lastyear and he's shining, you know,
(14:56):
and he's in the battle.
He's basically on the the bigstage, basically because he's
battling with Brian Thomas Jrevery day in practice, going
back and forth with him, whichis a good thing.
But all eyes have been on TysonCampbell, right, all eyes have
been on Jordan Lewis, who is anacquisition that we got in free
agency this year and, you know, paid a lot of money to.
(15:18):
All eyes have been on TravisHunter, who, you know All eyes
have been on Travis Hunter who,you know, probably is one of the
most talked about players inthe league in general, right,
although he's been playingmostly offense more so than
defense.
He's still been a big topic ofdiscussion when mentioning the
defensive side of the ball andplaying defensive back and
(15:39):
playing cornerback.
So you know he's overshadowingwhat Monteric Brown is doing as
well.
So there aren't a lot of eyes onMonteric when you mention those
three cornerbacks, right, thereisn't a lot of people outside
of the reporters, the localreporters, talking about
Monteric Brown and how he'slooking.
But he very well can findhimself taking a significant
(16:02):
amount of starter reps andthat's good because I feel like
he's coming off a decline lastyear, as are multiple people on
this defense, and here you haveAnthony Campanile being able to
get the best out of him and someof those players who stopped
decline last year.
So that's a positive sign andwe'll see if it translates in
(16:23):
training camp.
It's hard to feel like that.
It won't translate because intraining camp you can only be
more physical than youpreviously were.
I don't think you know they'regoing to get less physical,
right?
So you have to feel likeMonteric's momentum will
continue and he'll end up makingthis team.
You know, at the rate that he'sgoing, as you know, maybe the
(16:44):
cornerback four or five, whatever the case may be, and,
you know, depending on the usageof Travis Hunter, and also
something to consider is justkind of depending on the health
of Tyson Campbell, who hasn'tbeen able to stay healthy for
the Jacksonville Jaguars, hisrole on this team is going to be
very important, which is whyit's very good that he's showing
(17:04):
out right now and it'll be goodthat he continues to show out
when training camp arrives.
All right, so the next person onthe list who we will discuss is
one of my favorite draft picksthat we made this year and he's
a guy I mentioned in the tTikTok video, so you all might
know where I'm going with this.
But it's LaQuint Allen, who wedrafted two running backs in
(17:28):
this draft and he wasn't eventhe first one we drafted.
We actually drafted BasialTootin before him and we got
Allen in the seventh round.
We got Tootin in the fourthround, fourth round.
(17:49):
But I think we did discuss inthe post-draft podcast, um, that
I wasn't like as as big ontooting as some people are, and
it may be because I did readthat at one point in time in the
year.
Um, he was playing with a kneebrace and I'll have to see if
this is accurate and true, buthe was playing with a knee brace
and it kind of hampered him alittle bit, and then when he
came out of that knee brace, that's when he kind of took off,
and maybe a lot of the gamesthat I watched were early for
(18:11):
him when he was in that stage ofwearing the knee brace.
But I have to, you know, research, but I mean, I saw some
good things out of him, but Ijust wasn't super high on him
like some others were.
All of that said, though, whenI watched LaQuint Allen on film,
I was more so high on him thanTootin' and you know, when you
look at the reports coming outof OTAs for him and minicamp for
(18:35):
him, a lot of that checks outwith what I saw, and a lot of
that makes me excited about whatthe future holds for him.
Now, when you look at many ofthe scouting reports on him, on
Allen, you know they mentionedhis ability as a pass catcher,
but when you watch the film ofhim, like he made some tough
(18:57):
runs in between the tackles too,and I think that's significant
because we're coming up on atime where you know Travis ETN,
there's a lot of talk about himand you know if he'll be traded,
which I don't think he will be,I think the Jaguars, or you
know, probably start him thisyear and play him as the starter
this year and then let him gonext year.
(19:18):
And if that's the case you'regoing to need somebody to
replace him, and to me I couldsee that being Allen in some way
shape or form, because he doesoffer the pass catching ability
that ETN offers.
But he may even have moreupside, at least in the eyes of
the coaches, as a runner.
(19:39):
Between the tackles.
He made some physical runs outthere for Syracuse man and you
know, when you look at thescouting reports, he was one of
the players that I did somethingrare with.
I looked at the scoutingreports first before I watched
him.
Normally it's the other wayaround, because I like to watch
the player and see if what I sawon film is being put in the
scouting reports and see if itchecks out, and then, you know,
(20:02):
I go from there.
But for some reason I took abackwards approach with him and
just kind of reading thescouting reports and just you
know what people were sayingabout him in general.
When I watched him on film, youknow, dare I say he kind of
shocked me a little bit in termsof what he could do between the
tackles and the physicality hebrings in that regard.
But you know, he was mentionedin, I think, one of Shipley's
(20:25):
reports on Jad or SI, and Tootinas well.
I don't want to discreditTootin as well, but just about
how you know they really bothshine in the passing game I
think maybe it was passprotection or with catching the
ball either.
Or Trevor Lawrence praised bothof them as well.
(20:45):
But I think Allen is a guy thatwe're just seeing the beginning
with him Because, again, afterthis point it only gets more
physical right.
And now we're going to get tosee what he offers between the
tackles.
And you know, while and againthey might be ready to go and
roll with etn and tank bigs meatop the depth, atop the depth
(21:10):
chart in terms of um, you know, getting those hard yards between
the tackles, and you know, ifwe're going to talk about that
topic, you probably would thinkTank Biggs be more.
So is the guy for that.
But I think that the staff willbe able to get a lot out of ETN
between the tackles.
(21:31):
But even with that being thecase, I think they'll be
comfortable enough with whatthey've seen, with everybody
else behind him, to wherethey'll let him go next year.
So I think, like he's basicallyon a one-year plan, not a plan
where they plan on trading himthis year, but more so on a
one-year plan with this regime, and I mean, like you know, with
running backs.
Anyway, typically executivesdon't like to pay them a lot of
(21:57):
crazy money unless they're likesuper special, like Christian
McCaffrey or something like that, which kind of correlates to
what I was saying earlier, whythey drafted a guy like Allen,
so they can have a successionplan in place for when Etienne
goes next year.
They'll have some cheaper way, cheaper a seventh round pick
(22:17):
option as opposed to a firstround pick option to succeed him
as well as to and you know, you'll have Tank Bixby still
here as well, hopefully at thatpoint in time.
But all of that said, therewere good things said about
Allen again, more so in thepassing game, which, again, that
makes sense because you can'tbe as physical as you want in
(22:40):
the minicamp and OTA stages.
But I think, like that hisstock is only going to grow in
terms of when they put the padson, because I think he might
shock some people in terms ofwhat he could do between the
tackles.
And I think, you know, also intraining camp he'll get a lot of
opportunities.
You know, also in training camphe'll get a lot of
(23:02):
opportunities, whether that'spractice reps or in-game reps,
because you know, obviously youdon't want people at the top of
your depth chart getting hurtwhen you're in those preseason
games and that opens up a widewindow for, you know, guys like
Allen, like Tootin, to get a lotof carries in terms of maybe
playing for a full half or maybeeven more than that in most of
(23:26):
these training camp or most ofthese preseason games.
So I think that'll give himmore of an opportunity to shine
and impress people even more andI really, really like what I've
seen out of that young man onfilm, all right.
And then the last player I'llmention is another one I
mentioned on TikTok.
Uh, so you all might know whereI'm going with this, but Joshua
(23:47):
Cephas, the wide receiver fromthe University of San Antonio,
texas, that we um grabbed lastyear as an undrafted free agent.
You know, he's a guy that Ithought should have been drafted
in the fifth round but theJaguars got him in undrafted
free agent.
He's a guy that I thoughtshould have been drafted in the
fifth round but the Jaguars gothim in the undrafted free agency
and they kept him on thepractice squad.
He didn't make the team, butthere are some good things that
(24:09):
are being said about him comingout of OTAs and minicamp.
I remember hearing Liam Cohenspeak about him and it was in
May, I think in the early stagesabout the, what he's seeing out
of Cephas, and then, you know, also later down the road in
minicamp I think it was day oneof minicamp there were reports I
(24:32):
think John Shipley was one ofthem Go back and reference my
TikTok video, just to be sure, but John Shipley was one of them
mentioning how you know know, cephas stood out in day one of
minicamp.
And to me, what that says, youknow, it kind of also goes hand
in hand with what I mentioned, with this present regime being
able to get more out of theplayers, not just on the top of
(24:55):
the depth chart, but on the topof the depth chart, but on the
back of the depth chart way morethan the previous regime was.
That's part of it, but also, too, what that says too to me is
that, like many late roundpicks or undrafted picks.
You know Cephas just needed toget a year of NFL practices
under his belt.
He didn't play in any games, ifI can recall, so really all he
(25:17):
could really take advantage ofwas the practices, you know, and
just getting not just the speeddown and getting the element of
practicing with NFL playersdown, but just getting the NFL
grind down over the span of ayear.
Because you know people say thisall the time that rookie season
(25:39):
is tough on rookies because notonly are they getting prepared
to be an NFL player, but thepre-NFL process is also rigorous
on them as well.
Right, you got to get ready forthe combine.
Right, right after your season.
This is how it goes.
You start training for thecombine, you know, and if you
are somebody who's going toparticipate in one of the
(26:01):
all-star games, you know you getabout what three, four weeks
off, depending on how quick yourseason ended in college in
December, and then in Januaryyou spend a block.
You're back on the field forthe all-star games.
If you were good enough to go toan all-star game, which I felt
like C Cephas probably was, Ihave to go back and research it.
(26:21):
You, you go through theall-star game, you start
practicing for the combine, goto the combine itself, you do,
you know, workouts for theseteams before the draft and then
comes the draft.
So before the draft even getshere, you know, for rookies it's
a whole year process thatthey're going through with
(26:41):
getting prepared before they'rein the NFL and then when they
get into the NFL, that's a grindin itself and adapting to it in
itself.
So you know, after a year ofall that, what that says to me
is that Cephas has adjusted toit well and he's coming to year
two with something to prove, andhe's also coming into year two
(27:05):
with just familiarity and, um,you know, just less of a
rigorous process on his body.
Uh, because of course he had atrue off season this year.
So you know, that says to methat he is in the beginning
stages of being able to takethat next step of what it takes
to be a pro in the NFL.
(27:26):
And again, kind of like what Isaid for Allen, right, he's
going to get ample opportunitiesin the preseason too.
You know, and I know they docuts during the preseason as
well too.
You know and I know they docuts during the preseason as
well, but I think he's goodenough to stick through the
whole preseason process, atleast for all of the games,
right?
I think he's good enough tostick to this roster to the very
(27:47):
end, to final cuts, and I eventhink he can make the roster.
I think what may hold him frommaking a roster?
We have to see what he offers asa special teamer, because when
you're talking about that fifthor sixth wide receiver, that's
the kicker, right, that's thedeal breaker.
Can you help us on specialteams in a significant way?
We'll cross that bridge when weget there, though, but he's
(28:09):
going to get ample opportunitiesin the preseason, just for the
simple fact that you know LiamCohen and company, if they're
smart, they're going to want toprotect the guys atop the depth
chart, right?
So you're looking at a guy likeAllen and I'm talking about
Cephas here who's going to, youknow, see a half worth of snaps
in many of these preseason games, maybe even more.
(28:31):
You know, maybe you even seesome of these real young guys
enter the game in the secondquarter.
You know, in some of thesegames We'll see in time We'll
tell what kind of plan LiamCohen has for the starters, but
I think there'll be ampleopportunities for Seaford's to
get snaps on the field and youknow it won't shock me if you
(28:51):
know him and guys like Allen andguys on the back of the depth
chart young guys and you knowguys that are in year one or
year two are leading the team, which is normally the case.
Um are leading the team in snapsin the preseason.
Right, it's just on him to makethe most of them.
But he has stood out inminicamp and uh, that makes me
(29:12):
think he has some more in him interms of highlight plays that
he can make and uh, yeah, we'llsee in time we'll tell.
But yeah, he's a guy I'mexcited about because in the
first place, as I mentioned, first and foremost, he's already
kind of showing that he shouldhave been drafted at some
capacity.
Whether that was, you know, Ithink it was a fifth round pick,
but whether that was as a fifth, sixth or seventh round pick,
(29:34):
he's kind of flashing that heshould have been drafted and I
think more flashes could be onthe horizon for him this summer,
now that he has familiaritywith the league and now that
he'll be in a position wherehe'll get probably a decent
amount of looks during trainingcamp and during the games, all
(29:55):
right.
So, all of that said, we will goahead and wrap this one up.
You know, I just wanted to makethis one a little bit brief but
at the same time, give a decentamount of my thoughts and put a
decent amount of my thoughtsout there in terms of what
happened in minicamp and someguys that I'm kind of eyeing,
that I'm excited to watchheading forward, that I'm kind
