We seize a national-stage win over Kansas City, then flip the cornerback room by trading Tyson Campbell for Greg Newsome. Trevor Lawrence steadies a rough start with his legs, hits BTJ for a dime, and caps the night with an unforgettable scramble for a game winning touchdown.

With the last few days being a roller coaster, we covered the win and the following topics:

• Trade rationale, contract relief, pick swap details for shipping Campbell to Cleveland for Newsome
• Why Newsome is an upgrade on the field
• Cornerback rotation and roles after the move

James Johnson and Phil Barrera bring you the best and most up to date Jacksonville Jaguars news. "Touchdown Jaguars!" is a tribute to the prospective ownership group "Touchdown Jacksonville!" In 1991, the NFL announced plans to add two expansion teams and "Touchdown Jacksonville!" announced its bid for a team, and Jacksonville was ultimately chosen as one of five finalists. In November 1993, the NFL owners voted 26–2 in favor of awarding the 30th franchise to Jacksonville. James and Phil have been fans of the franchise ever since and have had the honor (and sometimes dishonor) of covering the team professionally since 2017. The rest as they say, is history.

SPEAKER_01 (00:59):
Welcome to the Touchdown Jaguars Podcast.
Here are your hosts, JamesJohnson and Phil Smith.

SPEAKER_00 (01:08):
All right, all right, all right, all right,
ladies and gentlemen, welcome toepisode 125 of the Touchdown
Jaguars podcast, which isactually, at least this first
half is a re-recording of ourVictory Tuesday episode.
Um, because there was some newsthat just broke in terms of the

(01:29):
Jacksonville Jaguars making thetrade, which we'll get into
James Gladstone keeping me busyhere.
Um, but this is a re-recordedepisode here where we will add
that trade news in the secondhalf of the podcast that I
recorded is still salvageable.
I'll keep that, but this firsthalf I gotta re-record for the
sake of getting this news out onthe trade that was made today.

(01:51):
Um, big time trade, in regardsto um helping out that
secondary.
So I am James Johnson.
If I haven't previously saidthat one half of the touchdown
Jack Wars podcast riding thisone solo, shout outs to my
co-host Phil Barrera, who hashis hands tied in some things
right now.
But I told him, you know, fearnot.
Um your man's can handle thisone, especially with this one um

(02:15):
being a little bit easier tohandle in the sense that it was
a win, man.
And it was a big time win thatwe'll always remember.
As the Jacksonville Jaguars wereable to handle business on the
national spot, like ESPN intown, all that good stuff for
Monday night football, andovertake the AFC champions of
last year and the Kansas CityChiefs in a thriller and a um,

(02:39):
you know, you could a lot ofpeople will say it was an upset
because the Jaguars weren'tfavored it, even though they
were home and um they had astreak of wins coming into the
game, but um, that's neitherhere or neither there.
But the Jacksonville Jaguarsable to get a 31-21 victory over
the Kansas City Chiefs um on thenational spotlight on ESPN, and

(03:01):
um they did it in an amazingway, by the way.
You know, got the ball with lessthan what two minutes left, and
uh Trevor Lawrence makes somecareer highlight plays, more
than one actually, in this onegame, um, to get the
Jacksonville Jaguars over thehump, get the Jacksonville

(03:21):
Jaguars to lead and give us amoment in Jacksonville Jaguars
history and everbane fieldhistory that we will never
forget.
So, more on that later, we'lltalk about that later.
But man, am I riding a high fromthat alone, from the game alone,
and then we make this trade uhwhich can help us out in a big
way on that defensive side ofthe ball as well.

game itself, I will plug ourhandles real quick here.

podcast.
As for the news that broke andit caused me to have to do a
re-recording here, theJacksonville Jaguars here about
two, three hours ago, um, maybetwo and a half hours ago, um,

(05:56):
it's midnight here, by the way,um 1222 to be exact, um, went
ahead and made a trade that kindof took us by surprise here um
and kind of just came out of theblue.
It although we felt like thisparticular player wouldn't be a
part of the long-term plansbecause he is a player from the

(06:17):
previous regime.
Um, but the Jacksonville Jaguarsand James Gladstone making
headlines again, um, as if theyhaven't done that enough uh for
a lot of the right reasonsbecause they're winning, right?
And they seem to have turnedthings around.
But the Jacksonville Jaguarsmake another trade with the
Cleveland Browns, a team uh thatsounds quite familiar, right?

(06:39):
People from um, you know, backin the draft, uh we made a trade
with them.
But he continues to do businesswith the Cleveland Browns and
Eric Berry over there as theytraded cornerback Tyson Campbell
to the Cleveland Browns uh forcornerback.
Greg Newsome, a formerfirst-round pick.
Tyson Campbell, a formersecond-round pick.

(07:00):
So these are two guys who are inthe same draft class, by the
way, um drafted um not too farfrom each other in terms of
where they were taken.
But uh they will be sendingTyson Campbell to, and this is
according to Adam Schefter, theCleveland Browns for Greg Newsom
and um the Jets 2026 sixth-roundpick that the Browns acquired

(07:22):
from the Jets in some way, shape, or form.
And um the Browns on their end,of course, as I mentioned, of
course, they get Tyson Campbell, and they get um a 2026 seventh
round pick from the JacksonvilleJaguars.
Now, before we get into thestuff on the field, which you
know that's the most importantpart, right?
And that's um, you know, thepart I'm most excited to talk

(07:46):
about, we'll discuss theimplications, right, in terms of
what this does for theJacksonville Jaguars
financially, of course, becauseyou know, although the salary
cap is fake, um, this trade doesfeel like um part of it is to
help the Jaguars with future capspace.
Um, now in terms of theimmediate implications for the

(08:09):
Jacksonville Jaguars, Newsomcomes with a 13.3 million uh cap
hit, and he's on his uhfifth-year option, um, if I'm
not mistaken.
Um, so he basically is on thelast year of his deal, and you
know, uh he'll be a free agentin 2026.
So, you know, the JacksonvilleJaguars um, you know, taking a

(08:33):
hit there in terms of um whatthey have to pay him for, you
know, not even a year's worth ofservice.
But at the same time, it getsthe Jacksonville Jaguars off of
Tyson Campbell's contract thatTrent Balkey gave him.
And, you know, this is juststill James Gladstone washing
his hands and watching this, uhwashing the stench of Trent
Balkey off of this team, thatyou know, it some part of that

(08:56):
stench will linger, and it'sgonna take some time to get off.
And week by week, month by one,uh month, James Gladstone is
washing that stench away fromthis team and getting more and
more of Trent Balkey's picks outof here.
You know, some of these playersare salvageable and worth
keeping, but the ones that arehurting the team the most, and

(09:16):
when I say hurting, I don't justmean like on the field, but in
terms of hurting the team'sgrowth and you know, limiting,
you know, them financially aswell, um, because Trent Balkey,
of course, wanting to make itlook like he did a great job or
that he was good at his job, um,re-signed a lot of people that
he shouldn't have.

(09:37):
And James Gladstone is workinghis behind off to um free up cap
space and free up the finances.
And again, we do know the cap,the salary cap is is fake, but
you know, at the same time, still, you know, to some degree,
you can't be reckless with whereyou put your money.
So there is that.

(09:57):
But as we all know, Balkeysigned Campbell to a four-year
$76.5 million extension thatincluded$53.4 million in
guarantees, and that's the keyhere.
The Jacksonville Jaguars gettingout of that long-term
investment, saving some moneynext year towards next year's

(10:18):
salary cap because they, youknow, they have to make some
moves next year in terms of youknow, trying to keep Devin Low
and maybe keeping Travis ETN,you know, or some other guys
that you know they also uhshould be interested in keeping
as well.
So it helps them in that regardin terms of the long term.
And I just wanted to get thatout of the way, too, of like

(10:39):
what some of the thought conceptwould be.
And also, too, when you look atthat contract, it you know, it
was clear that Tyson just, youknow, wasn't performing to it,
right?
And then, you know, there'salways the injury concerns too.
He hasn't been the healthiestplayer, which I have said, and
hey, I'm a Georgia Bulldog, havesaid that many, many times, a
Georgia Bulldog fan.

(11:00):
And, you know, Tyson Campbell isone of those guys where I didn't
exactly love the pick when wemade it, and year after year, he
just never really made thestrides he needed to make in
terms of ball skills, right?
It feels like he's still thesame player he was as a rookie,

(11:20):
or not that far off from wherehe was as a rookie in terms of
the ball skills.
And when you invest this kind ofmoney that I just discussed in
the Tyson or a player, acornerback or safety or any kind
of defensive back, the ballskills have to be there, right?
Like you can't lack ball skillsand get paid this kind of money.
Um, so this regime who has nowho have no ties to Tyson

(11:44):
Campbell, and they uh they'vesaid some good things about him
in training camp.
Camp Neely praised him.
Um but when the lights went on,I think part of it is they
realized that he was not gonnalive up to that contract, right?
Um, but he was given everyopportunity to live up to it,
um, but just gave up too manybig plays because, and for the

(12:06):
same reason, many, many times,of just um the ball skills are
lacking, and that's where youwill see a difference between
him and Newsom.
I think I can remember watchingNewsom this year, um, and I
liked him coming out of college, out of Northwestern, I believe
it was.
Um, but I actually have seen oneof his games in full because I

(12:26):
think I watched the Bengals toum get a you know like a glimpse
of them before we played them.
Uh, so I was just kind of doingsome film study, and Newsom had
a pretty good game, you know, went back and forth uh with um
Jamar Chase in that game, had abreakup or maybe two, um forced
him out of bounds one time.
And of course, you know, Chaseis gonna get his too, but

(12:49):
Newsome is a player that youcould tell in that game that has
that dog in him that was readyto meet the challenge.
And we all saw what Chase andCompany did to Tyson Campbell,
by the way.
Um, but and it is a littledifferent because Newsom sees uh
Chase twice a year, right?
So there are some familiarities.

(13:10):
So in his defense, in Tyson'sdefense, um, he hasn't had as
many matchups and as manyopportunities uh to face Chase
back to back like Newsome has.
But just Newsom, you could justtell he's always up for the
challenge, not just againstChase and Higgins and you know
all of them, but you could justtell throughout the totality of

(13:31):
his career, anybody you put infront of him, he's always been
up for the challenge.
And clearly the ball skills arebetter than Tyson, right?
A lot of times when you look atTyson, either he's trailing the
defender, trying to catch up tothe defender, and his eyes are
never on the ball, right?
A lot of times when you watchhim, and of course, that depends
on like what kind of techniqueyou're using and and what have

(13:54):
you.
Um, so you know, there is that.
But a lot of times where Tyson'seyes need to be on the ball,
should I say they're not, right?
And that's a big, big problemthat's plagued him throughout
his career, and he struggled tofix it, right?
Whereas Newsom, who is also veryscrappy, no, he's a guy that

(14:15):
differs from Tyson there, right?
Um, he he gets his ball, hiseyes on the ball late, and you
know, he can sense he has thatawareness a little bit, a little
bit better awareness of when theball is coming his way and when
to get his head around and tryand make a play on the ball and
so on and so forth.
So while he's a guy that'ssmaller than Tyson, um he does

(14:36):
bring better ball skills to thetable, uh, which is a much
needed addition for thisdefense, which is already good
at takeaways.
But when you talk abouttakeaways, guess what?
The key thing is those takeawaysaren't coming from the
cornerback position.
So now we have made this trade, another trade with the Cleveland
Browns.
And um, you know, now we got agroup.
I I like this group now, youknow, and me and Phil said it

(14:58):
earlier in the year.
As we near the trade deadline, the two spots we were looking at
was like defensive tackle andcornerback.
So cornerback has beenaddressed, at least for now,
temporarily for this year.
And now we have a group that uma fiery group that I like a
little bit more than wepreviously had.
You know, you have to feel likemaybe this means that number
one, or excuse me, he was thenumber two overall pick, but

(15:20):
number one pick for theJacksonville Jaguars, Travis
Hunter, who um did a great jobon the national spotlight, by
the way, even though like thestats aren't super crazy, but
people got to see what he'scapable of on both of uh both
sides of the ball, and peoplealso now saw a reason to get

(15:41):
behind the hype with the casualfans, right?
Those people who don't watch theJacksonville Jaguars more on him
later, probably.
But you know, you have to feellike Travis Hunters are gonna
get more um opportunities atcornerback, his snaps is gonna
increase.
Um, somebody who I actuallytalked about and praised a
little bit, and he was one ofthe better graded players in the
last game at Monday NightFootball against the Chiefs.

(16:04):
Monteric Brown, who battled aninjury earlier in the year, but
is back.
Um Tarek Brown, a guy who had agreat training camp.
Uh, yeah, I feel like you'll seemore of him as well, and a way
more cheaper, way moreaffordable option than Tyson
Campbell, right?
In terms of the salary he's on.
And then you add in the new guyin Newsom, and then you can't

(16:26):
forget Jordan Lewis, who'splaying, although you know he
plays mostly at Nickel, isplaying at an all-pro level.
So I like that group when youtalk about those guys I just
mentioned.
I like that group a lot morethan I like them with Tyson
Campbell in the mix.
All right, so now for part twoof the show, as we'll get into
the game itself, and or betteryet, um, I'll run through the

(16:51):
stats, um, give some thoughts onboth sides of the ball, the
offense and defense, then giveyou all my key takeaways here.
So starting with TrevorLawrence, um, who you know will
be a part of one of my keytakeaways here.
We'll get into that later, butjust to go through the stats
here, um, he was 18 of 25, uhthrough for I need glasses here,

(17:17):
221 yards, one touchdown, uh,had one pick.
Uh, he was sacked three times.
And uh the pick was, you know, one that a lot of people
question, national and casualand local fans uh question
because it it was passinterference uh to the T and the
refs didn't call it.

(17:37):
And you know, that that was oneof the things coming into this
game that we thought we have todeal with is overcoming the refs
because that that's always anuphill battle for whatever
reason when you play the KansasCity Chiefs.
We'll get into that more solater.
Um then on to the rushing stats, guess who led the way?
None other than Trevor Lawrencewith 10 carries, um, 10 very

(18:01):
important carries, it feelslike, for 54 yards and two
rushing touchdowns.
So he accounted for 14 of theJaguars touchdowns.
Well, I mean, he accounted forall of them because, you know,
aside from the Devin Lloydinterception, right?
He accounted for all of the oneson offense in some way, shape,

(18:21):
or form.
But two of them he uh he gainedwith his feet on the ground.
Something that we've beenreally, really, really wanting
to see from him is him as acontributor um in the run game
and contributing and using hislegs um to help him get going
and help him get out of um thesesituations that we have seen him
in in the past.

(18:41):
Then not too far behind him wasTravis ETN for um he had 12
carries for 49 yards.
So the running backs weren'treally like able to get going
like we seen in the past.
Um so we'll talk about that alittle bit.
And then um, the only otherperson to register rushing stats

(19:02):
for the Jaguars was BachelTutan, four carries for six
yards.
The top receivers of the day orof the night uh were Brian
Thomas Jr., who had a monumentalcatch, um, a catch that we'll
always remember from Trevor latein the fourth quarter, again, by

(19:23):
the way, kind of like they didwith the Texans, right?
Um but Brian Thomas Jr.
led the way in receiving fourreceptions for 80 yards.
So he's he's getting better withthe drops.
He's easing up on that 100-yardfigure that you know we're used
to seeing from him at least lastyear in his rookie year.
Uh so things are improvingthere.

(19:43):
Travis Hunter, who also answeredthe bright light stage, right?
Um, that we all know is ESPN andin primetime football.
Um had three catches for 64yards.
Now, look, of course, likestatistically, that that don't
look super crazy, but it's thethe way and the impact of the

(20:05):
three catches he had, and justseeing him also on the opposite
side of the ball make an impactthere.
Um, he certainly gave thenational media and the national
viewers the show that they werelooking for because a lot of
people questioned theJacksonville Jaguars decision
when you you got the people whojust watch the box scores and

(20:25):
don't actually watch the games.
A lot of people were questioningwhat Travis Hunter's usage was
heading into this game and hiscontributions and what the
Jaguars gave up to get him.
And they kind of now can startto see the vision, right?
Some of them still probablydon't see it fully, but those
who have eyes and who actuallywatch the game can kind of see

(20:48):
the vision and where this isgoing and what this is brewing
up to be, right?
And then third on the list wasBrent Strange.
He only had one catch for 22yards, which was like in the
first drive.
Um, but he ended up leaving thegame and is now on IR.
Uh so he'll be out for fourweeks on IR.
And the Jacksonville Jaguarsalso um to kind of correspond

(21:10):
with the move.
Uh they signed Tim Jones, um,former familiar face to the
organization.
So um going to injured reserve,Brenton Strange coming on to the
practice squad, Tim Jones.
They released Eric Uzakanma offof the practice squad to make uh

(21:30):
the room for Tim Jones additionto the practice squad.
So, you know, Trevor Lawrencegetting a familiar face there.
Um, I think one of the guys hewent to the Bahamas with, right?
I know it was a lot ofcontroversy surrounding Tim
Jones' name when um we had thesituation with the the Houston
Texans last year, uh wheresomebody who shall remain

(21:52):
unnamed um hit Trevor Lawrencein a very, very violent way and
uh a very, very disgusting waythat we all just don't like to
um go back and review, right?
But anyway, continuing on to thedefense, um Foyer Aluican uh led

(22:12):
the way with tackles.
Uh, not a surprise, right?
I had 14, seven of which weresolo.
Um, Eric Murray was second onthe list for tackles with eight
and five of his were solo.
Dewey Wingard, pretty activewith seven tackles, which makes
sense when you're playing theChiefs.

(22:33):
Uh Tyson Campbell, seven tackleshimself.
We'll talk about him in one ofthose tackles as well, probably.
So those were your guys who hadseven tackles or more.
And then on the Chiefs' end,Patrick Mahomes was 29 of 41,
threw for 318 yards, had um onetouchdown, threw one pick, one

(22:55):
historic pick, too, that'llforever live in our minds.
We'll talk about that later.
But we knew coming into thisgame, you know, the Jacksonville
Jaguars, while it was going tobe hard to keep up that trend of
three picks or three takeaways agame, we needed one big one.
Um, and we boy did we ever getit.
So there's that.
Um Patrick Mahomes, much likeTrevor Lawrence on his end, led

(23:20):
the Chiefs in rushing.
So it was a battle of Russianquarterbacks here in a little
bit of a way.
But uh six carries for 60 yards, and then Kareem Hunt was right
behind him with seven for 49.
Pacheco had seven for 36 yards.
Um, two of their um touchdownscame from Hunt, and one came

(23:42):
from Patrick Mahomes on theground, that is.
And then leading the way on thereceiving end was uh Taekwond
Thornton, the speed threat, formerly of the New England
Patriots, with three catches for90 yards.
So he was just going off interms of his average.
Um, and then there was TravisKelsey behind him with six,

(24:05):
excuse me, seven catches for 61yards and a touchdown.
On their end, defensively, NickBolton led the way with 12
tackles, and Shamari Connor uhhad seven, so he was behind
Bolton in the tackles category.
And those are the main key statshere.
Um, as we'll get into kind ofjust um my thoughts and

(24:28):
takeaways on um each side of theball.
Uh instead of that, actually, yeah, we'll just go with my
three main takeaways because mythree main takeaways um will
cover a lot of the conversationsI would have about the offense,
um, defense, and special teams.
So uh my three main takeawayswill start with the first one.
And of course, as I mentionedearlier in the podcast, it was

(24:52):
the performance of TrevorLawrence answering the call.
You know, a lot of doubterstuning in to watch, and you
know, they they probably hadtheir tweets already in the
drafts ready, you know, all thebots and the the national
pundits and you know, all of youguys that you see on TV of
Stephen A.
Smith's um from first take, soon and so forth.

(25:14):
And I mean the doubters werethere clear as day in the
post-game process, right?
When you look at ESPN and theiranalysts and what have you, um,
only one took um theJacksonville Jaguars to win.
That was Scott Van uh Van Pelt, who um has Jacksonville ties.
Um, so it made sense that hewould go with Jacksonville.

(25:35):
But Trevor Lawrence answeringthe call in a high pressure
situation, things started roughfor him.
And well, the team in general, you could tell um the
high-pressure atmosphere wassomething they had to settle
into.
And Liam kind of mentioned that.
Liam Cohen mentioned that umbecause you know this is the
first time they were in thebright lights under Cohen.

(25:56):
Um, a lot of people coming intothe situation, trying to find
out if they're legitimate, youknow, if they're a legitimate
one lost team.
And by the way, you know, thatthey are now uh top for the top
record in football.
But yeah, a lot of peoplequestioning and wanting to see
if they are a legitimateone-lost team.
So it was a lot of pressurecoming into the situation.

(26:18):
The fans could feel it, ofcourse, the players could feel
it, the coaches could feel it.
And um, yeah, in that firstquarter, it was clear as day
that Trevor Lawrence could feelit, right?
Um, he had a fumble where hetried to um do his infamous leap
over the line, which if you'regonna do it, you got to protect
the ball a little bit better, right?
Um, I don't know, maybe you jumpover the line and cradle it.

(26:41):
Like it's a dangerous situationto jump over the line,
especially as the quarterback,right?
Um, so I guess what I would say, whatever you do, protect the
ball in that situation if you'regonna go over the line and uh
maybe I don't know, um, maybedraw up a play where we see all
the time where there's a delaybefore you take that leap over

(27:02):
the line, right?
And you kind of feel out whereit is that you can take that
leap over the line after justkind of seeing what kind of push
your offensive line gets.
Uh, we kind of see that all thetime.
So maybe that would have been abetter idea than the approach he
took, um, but it's a lessonlearned.
And um, as a result of that, theJacksonville Jaguars fell behind

(27:23):
14 to 0 and it caused a lot ofpanic, right?
Now, I'm not saying it caused alot of panic within the team
itself, but I know it caused alot of panic within the fan
base, and that is kind of whatcomes with when you're playing
the AFC champions and you'replaying the Chiefs, right?
That just kind of comes with it.
You're playing Angry, you'replaying Patrick Mahomes, like

(27:43):
you know it's gonna be an uphillbattle to recover from a
14-point deficit against them.
But again, this is a differentChiefs team, they're a little
bit older, um, they're not 100%healthy, and that was something
that I kind of kept in mind intohalftime.
I was like, yeah, I'm tickedoff, right?
I wish we would have had abetter outing and what have you.

(28:05):
Um, but this could be much, muchworse, right?
And this deficit could be a bitmore difficult to overcome.
But this just I just had to keepin mind, this isn't the same
Chiefs team.
Um, at least not yet.
And we need to give them somerespect too, by the way, in a
sense that I wouldn't be shockedif this team still makes the

(28:26):
playoff.
Like they're not out of it, likeby any stretch.
Now, look, maybe we see asituation where they're gonna be
um in the playoffs as a wildcard team, because their
division, if I can recall, is umdoing very well standings-wise
um between them and the Chargersand the Broncos.

(28:47):
Uh, so yeah, it's it's a lot ofum hurdles they have to overcome
to get first place.
Um, but even if they can't wintheir division, like it's hard
for me to envision them notmaking the playoffs, right?
They'll find a way.
They are resilient and they arethe Chiefs, and they are only
getting healthier, as Imentioned.

(29:08):
But going back to my point, right now, this Chiefs team is
one that if there were ever aChiefs team in the last five
years or so that you can make acomeback on, it was this one,
right?
Granted the circumstances, andboy, did the Jacksonville
Jaguars do that.
So, you know, Trevor Lawrence'sstart in terms of the fumble,
and he also had another one ofthose just head scratching

(29:32):
penalties that I mentioned, where it's like, are you
processing the mental part ofthe game uh where he um of
course threw the ball when hewas past the line of scrimmage,
right?
And again, that could that couldhave been very well nerves, but
we've seen that from TrevorLawrence in the past.
So, like it's like is it nervesor is it just Trevor Lawrence
just being Trevor Lawrence?

(29:54):
And when you just add all ofthat into the mix between the
penalty, which the JacksonvilleJaguars and We'll talk about
this later, didn't have a lot ofbetween that penalty um and
between the fumble and justgetting off to a 0-14 start.
The doubts began to creep inpeople's head in terms of

(30:15):
winning the game, and also, youknow, what is it that we have at
quarterback?
And man, did he answer the call?
And that, you know, that's whatwe talked about in the last
podcast.
Is it's just taking TrevorLawrence a while to get going in
this Liam Cohen offense, andLiam has said this that they're
asking a lot up out of him.
And I had to put this in thethread with um me and Vez and my

(30:37):
nephew and Phil because theywere getting upset a little bit
too.
And rightfully so.
I'm not saying that that waswrong of them to do, but I've
seen this before.
I've been down this road before,I've seen him start slow.
And also, too, again, like Ithink I'm a little bit more
lenient when understanding thatShod Cun put Trevor Lawrence in

(31:00):
a bad situation where he's hadthree offensive coordinators,
and it's just not gonna like getrolling as fast as people want
when you've gone through thatmany offensive schemes, man.
It's just not add that with thefact that Liam has said again,
and Troy Aikman said it too.
They asked a lot of him in thisoffense.
You know, it might take a littlewhile for him to get cooking.

(31:23):
Um, but again, boy, did the potstart getting hot around that
second quarter and headingforward in terms of him turning
it on, and he was able to startmaking plays with his legs.
And you know, I know Pete Priscosaid that some of the plays, you
know, he missed some receiverswhere he scrambled for it.
But at the end of the day, whocares?

(31:44):
If you come away with points, which he did in these scenarios,
who cares, right?
Um, and also just for the sakeof momentum and getting him
going, if you know, a few playsof him using his legs is what
gets him going um offensively, and that leads to touchdowns,
and that leads to um eventualsituations where he's able to

(32:06):
hit the receivers as well downthe field in the passing game.
I'm okay with it, right?
All well ends well, right?
So he was able to get hisrushing ability going, right,
which is something we've long, long just been asking for out of
him.
And this is gonna be the key tosaving his career and getting
his career going in the rightdirection.

(32:28):
He's gonna be have to he's gonnahave to become more of a runner,
right?
That's what's helped Josh Allenso much in his career.
That's what has helped PatrickMahomes.
Uh the older he gets is, youknow, there's a lot of times
where he has to make plays withhis feet.
Um, and it's especiallysomething that Trevor Lawrence
is gonna have to learn becausehe is the way he's wired is to

(32:51):
go for the home run all thetime.
And sometimes that's notrequired, right?
We saw it in this game a littlebit, you know, trying to go for
the home run at times.
But just sometimes just takewhat the offense gives you and
keep the drive going with yourlegs, right?
And live to see another set ofdowns.
Even if you miss a receiver hereand there in the process of

(33:11):
scrambling, that's okay.
Live to see another set ofdowns, get yourself some
momentum, and look what happens,right?
He had his best game of theseason as a result.
So after the fumble, and this isanother thing, too, and this is
kind of as Austin Lane said onum his show, him and Brent's
show, this is the TrevorLawrence experience, too.

(33:31):
It's gonna be a roller coaster,right?
Like, I think we just gotta wrapour minds around that.
You know, I would like for it tobe less of a roller coaster, but
he's a roller coaster type ofquarterback.
But after the fumble, man, hegot it going, which by the way,
the Chiefs scored after thefumble, scored a touchdown at
that after the fumble.

(33:51):
So that put them at 14 to 0 atthat point.
But that second drive in thesecond quarter, shout outs to
Trevor, you know, eliminatingall of what had previously
happened in his mind between umand on the field between the
fumble um and punting on um Ithey I think it was two, three,

(34:13):
and outs before that.
Good job on his part foreliminating what had previously
happened.
And Liam has, you know, hasreally coached this and stressed
this, and this is why this teamis going to go places, and this
is why they're resilient.
It's because Liam always hasprogrammed them to, hey, forget
what happened last drive, on tothe next.

(34:35):
One play at a time, one play ata time, and Trevor has said it
himself too.
And as a result, you know, he umis able to construct a 13-play
drive on their second drive inthe second quarter, where he had
a 16-yard run that was good toum get them a first down, he had

(34:55):
a 14-yard run to convert a thirddown, and then you sprinkle in a
little bit of Travis Etienne, and what do you know?
Your um on goal line situation,he's able to hit Parker
Washington for a three-yardtouchdown.
And, you know, another thing toois we just previously came off a
game where offensively ParkerWashington and Trevor were

(35:17):
trying to get on the same page.
Remember, he was, you know, chirping at Parker Washington on
a two-point conversion, and herethey are correcting their
mistakes.
And that's another thing aboutthis team, it's getting better
by the week, fixing things hereand there by the week.
You know, they're not fixingeverything on a game-by-game
basis, but small things aregetting cleaned up bit by bit.
And what you're gonna see by theend of the season by week 17 is

(35:40):
a team that has cleaned up amajority of their big-time
mistakes and the offense that'sfunctioning on a higher level
than it is right now.
But them able to get over theirmiscommunication last week, him
at Parker Washington, to go intothis week on Monday, linking up
on the three-yard touchdownpass, uh, was good to see on my

(36:04):
part as well.
I don't think a lot of peoplementioned or or noticed that.
Um, that here here we were lastweek.
Those two were having a hardtime getting on the same page.
And, you know, Parker wasdropping some balls before that
in the Texans game.
Um, but Parker Washington ableto contribute on the offensive
side in a big way and get theJaguars on the board for their

(36:24):
first seven points or well, six,and then the field goal or the
extra point uh to get them onthe board for their first set of
points of the game.
So after that, the Jaguars wereable to put 14 and 10 points up
in the next respective quarters.
And a big reason, of course, andwhen you beat the Chiefs, it
does come down to quarterbacksanyway.

(36:45):
A big reason for that was theplay of Trevor Lawrence after
that point in that secondquarter and heading forward.
He turned it on on his birthdaywhen a lot of people were
looking at him with the sideeye, not his teammates, because
you know, they've done a goodjob of just staying in the
moment and keeping each other umheads held high.
You know, they that's anotherthing that Liam has coached, but

(37:07):
he turned it on from that momentin the third quarter.
I think he started their firstdrive, a seven-play drive of 87
yards with a touchdown there.
That's the one, if I'm notmistaken, where he had to
scramble for a touchdown.
Yeah, a touchdown run.
I'm looking at it here uh for 10yards.
So again, using his legs to getgoing there.

(37:27):
All right, and then after thatrushing touchdown from Trevor
Lawrence, he gets some help onthe defensive side of the ball,
right?
That's when the monumental, uhhistoric, and you know, a moment
that'll live in our mindsforever.
Um, 99-yard touchdowninterception uh comes into part

(37:48):
in the last drive of the entirethird quarter for both teams.
Uh Devin Lloyd steps to theplate again and acquires his
what fourth pick of the year.
I think, and if I'm notmistaken, he leads the league in
interceptions.
Um, but again, man, we justcan't.
I know we're talking aboutTrevor Lawrence right now, but

(38:09):
we can't say enough how muchthis man has improved as a
player and what he'scontributing uh to this team and
just playing like the defensiveplayer of the year.
Like at this rate, he should winit, right?
If he continues on at this rate, and shoutouts to Campanilly,
Coach Campanili for putting himin better position and getting

(38:30):
more out of him because it feltlike the previous scheme not
only put him in a bad position, but also too, you know, at times
it feels like he he didn't wantto give his all to that scheme.
And again, you know, that thatcould have been um just the
atmosphere and just the youknow, just not seeing eye to eye
with the coaching staff and thenegative energy that was in the

(38:53):
building with Doug Peterson andhis group and Trent Balkey,
right?
Um, you know, who's to say weall wouldn't react the same way,
I guess, um, you know, if wewere in that atmosphere too.
But yeah, huge pick six took itback for 99 yards from Devin
Lloyd, uh, where he um, youknow, he came up to the line and

(39:14):
kind of dropped back into arobber situation and um was able
to cut off a route, uh, like alittle slant pattern or
something that was breaking offan angle route that was breaking
off behind him.
Patrick Mahomes didn't even seehim because I guess what
happened is when he saw DevinLloyd come up to the line and um
engage with, you know, thecenter or guard or whoever it

(39:37):
was, you know, he thought DevinLloyd was out of the picture.
And then Devin Lloyd um hits himwith a swerve.
And shout outs to Swerve, by theway, who was at the game, Swerve
Strickland of AEW.
Um he hit him with a swerve, drove back in the coverage for a
Robert situation, was able topick it off.
And, you know, while it was theonly pick of the night, Devin

(39:59):
Lloyd knew he needed to makethat one count.
And shoutouts to everybodyaround him on the defense
blocking to make sure he canturn that into a touchdown
because you don't pick offPatrick Mahomes much, right, in
this in this day and age.
And when you pick him off oryou're able to sack him, or
you're able to get a stripfumble on him, you need to make

(40:19):
it count.
And shout outs to them, youknow, understanding the gravity
of them needing to contribute umsome points to the mix.
While again, it wasn't the threetakeaways we're used to.
That's okay, it's it's theChiefs, right?
That's not gonna happen with theChiefs.
But just making the one pickthat we were able to get count
and his teammates for justblocking their behinds off, man,

(40:41):
and getting downfield andhelping them get to the end
zone.
But back to Trevor, um, in thefourth quarter in their first
drive, he throws a pick.
Again, that was a situationwhere there was clearly
interference, and everybody isjust baffled that that wasn't
called.
Like, I know the JacksonvilleJaguars are gonna like ask the
league about that and what anduh what WTF happened there in

(41:05):
terms of that.
And I'm I'm real curious to seewhat the league responds with
because that was insane.
Um, I forgot who it was, but theDVU ran into Park of Washington,
and um it resulted in a pick, and that pick also resulted uh
resulted in um an eventualtouchdown from the offense
because they had you know shortfield yardage, or uh they were

(41:27):
on the short side of the field,so they didn't have to do too
much.
I think it was like two playsfor 19 yards on the offense's
end, and bam, there you go,touchdown, right?
And all of a sudden, we're allsweating bullets again at the
score of 21-21.
Um, so yeah, man, again, thatjust goes back to what I was
saying, man.
It's not just a battle with theChiefs, it's not just a battle

(41:48):
with anxiety.
Um, it's a battle with the refs,too.
Every time you play this team, and it's just it's just funny
how it all works out when you'replaying the Kansas City Chiefs.
But um, still yet TrevorLawrence able to go on the next
drive after throwing that pickum and get the Jacksonville
Jaguars in good enough positionto come away with a Cam Little

(42:12):
field goal.
Um, shout out to Cam Little, only had one field goal attempt
on the day, but um he was ableto make that one successfully.
So he's trying to get back onthe right track after, you know,
having the miss that we hadpreviously discussed in the
previous episode.
KC answers.
They come back with a 12-play,86-yard sequence for six minutes

(42:34):
and 23 seconds that put the ballin the jazz court with under two
minutes left in the game.
The most Kansas City Chiefsthing ever, right?
And that's why they're so great.
You know, Andy Reidunderstanding the situation,
understanding we need to chewout as much clock as we can.
And they they maybe could havechewed out a little bit more,

(42:56):
and they maybe should have.
That you know, they made onesmall mistake, and that's what
it comes down to when you'replaying the Chiefs, it's like
always one like small mistake.
Um, and you know, in this case, like it I think it boiled down
though, not to just thatmistake, though, now that I'm
thinking about it though, soI'll take that back.
It also boils down to somethingI'll talk about for my next

(43:18):
takeaway and the pick six.
The pick six was a X factor uhfor the Jacksonville Jazz Wars.
But, you know, they put the ballin the Jazz court with a minute
and 45 seconds left, and TrevorLawrence goes out there and has
the moment we've been hoping heuh would bring to us ever since

(43:40):
that Chargers game, right?
And the the Trevor moment, uhthe Trevor Lawrence moment that
we've been looking for sincethat point.
And boy, did it ever come at abetter time uh because again,
the bright lights were there, the national stage was set for
him to have this moment, right?
And the people who've beendoubting him for so long and

(44:01):
questioning him for so long, theDan Orlowski's of the world, and
you know, all of these guys fromESPN, you it's Stephen A.
Smith's who I don't thinkStephen A.
Smith was at the game, but Iknow he was watching, right?
You don't miss Monday NightFootball and work for ESPN,
right?
Because you got to go talk aboutit on first take the next day.
But all of these um nationalpundits from ESPN and even other

(44:23):
networks because everybodywatches Monday Night Football,
because it's a huge talkingpoint on Tuesday, right?
But Trevor Lawrence goes outthere and he has the moment that
Jacksonville Jaguars fans werehoping for him on his birthday
again, by the way, um, for himto silence all of these doubters

(44:44):
and haters that he's had.
And he goes out there in thissequence, which was um seven
plays for 60 yards, took up aminute and 22 in time.
So they moved the field, uh, theball down the field pretty
efficiently there.
But he makes two dime notablethrows in his career, by the
way.

(45:04):
And what could be probably myfavorite throw from him since
that Jamal Agnew throwing theBengals game, like I that was my
favorite throw from him of hiscareer.
But I think this might replaceit the one to BTJ, which I've
watched many, many times.
And shout outs to BTJ too, um,getting over his case of um the

(45:25):
drops, right?
And he it looked like he hebobbled it a little bit, you
know, didn't catch it thecleanest, but he still was able
to, you know, bring it in.
And um, you know, ever sincethat San Francisco 49ers game,
he's been hit the hands havebeen fine, and he's gradually
getting back to himself.
Um, but a breadbasket throwwhere Trevor Lawrence uh puts it

(45:46):
right over the DB to a streakingBrian Thomas Jr.
on the sideline for what may bethe throw of Trevor Lawrence's
NFL career so far, a lot ofpeople would say at least.
Um so for that to happen on thenational stage was huge because
there's been all of this talkabout the hospital balls and all
of this, and you know, he goesout and and makes that throw.

(46:09):
And also, too, it was a throwearlier where it was actually
incompletion.
But I'm glad Troy Aikman broughtand shine the light on it.
It was the one to Tim Patrick, where he was explaining that
Trevor Lawrence was trying toput the ball, I think, on his
back shoulder to protect him.
I loved hearing that from TroyAitman.
I loved both him and Joe Buck,by the way, legends.

(46:30):
I wish I can get them on hispodcast one day or one of them.
But um, you know, you hear TroyAikman say the reason Trevor
threw it that way was him tryingto protect his receiver.
And you know, the the ongoingconversation has been,
especially amongst the like thebots and the fantasy pundits,
right?
Is that he throws hospital ballsand all of these people who are
just trying to get clicks andlikes and views.

(46:51):
And look, Trevor Lawrence hadn'tbeen the best quarterback in his
career.
We're not disputing that, butthe hospital ball thing is just
getting out of hand, is what I'msaying.
And for Troy Aikman to kind ofshed some light on that, I think
that was one of the parts of thegame that went unnoticed that I
probably should have retweeted, but or you know, tweeted
something about it.
Um, but yeah, you have him doingthings like that, the Tim

(47:12):
Patrick throw, and then droppingthe one in the bucket to Brian
Thomas Jr., when they needed himto do it the most.
And this is not the first timethat's happened.
They did it in the Texans game, him and Brian Thomas Jr.
able to connect when the Jagsneeded them the most and getting
the job done.
And then after that, he hitsDeMy Brown on a ball that if you

(47:34):
put it on a rope, had to be what45-50 yards where he he's going
to um he's doing thisoutbreaking pattern, right,
where he has some leverage tothe outside.
So able to hit DeAmy Brown onthat pass after that, putting
two dots together, you know, inthat sequence to get the
Jacksonville Jaguars where theyneeded to go.
And then he has a TrevorLawrence moment, right?

(47:57):
Uh, where he gives the delay ofgame penalty.
And we're all like looking likewhat in God's name, man.
So yeah, a third uh penalty thatput them in a situation where
they were third and 13 on KC'sum 16 or something like that,
somewhere in there, thatballpark.
He then goes, uh attempts to goback to Brian Thomas Jr.

(48:19):
And we get a shocking callbecause we don't hardly see
things call against the Chiefs.
So um, you know, a lot of peoplelike, oh, whoa, like what was
that?
But Brian Thomas Jr.
and it indeed was passinterference.
DB didn't turn around and locatethe ball, hit Brian Thomas Jr.,
wrapped him before the ball gotthere, and that set us up for

(48:39):
the wildest touchdown that we'veseen in recent history, if not
in Jazz history, period.
Um, where Trevor Lawrence is onthe one, gets his foot stepped
on by either Patrick McCari orMunheim, who's filling in for
our veteran, right?
He falls to the ground, tries topick himself up again.

(49:00):
And we've seen this happenbefore where Trevor Lawrence got
his foot stepped on, I think inthe preseason.
I think it was it against theSaints or somebody.
Um, but this has happenedbefore, right?
Um he tries to lift himself offthe ground, stumbles again, but
continues to have thewherewithal to just get to his
feet, right?
And of course, you know, him andLiam say, you know, the thought

(49:22):
process was to get up and throwit out of bounds to save time,
right?
Uh, because you didn't want tolike be in a situation where you
couldn't stop the clock,basically.
So he gets himself off of theground and realizes that he has
a chance to dart for thetouchdown and jumping on a grand

(49:42):
opportunity where you know, typically it feels like somebody
would have been there to tackle.
I mean, it, you know, he didbreak a tackle or two to get
there, but it feels like morebodies should have been there
ideally.
Um, and maybe, you know, thedefense just let up.
And, you know, Chris Jones wasone of which I I agree with the
people.
You you absolutely, if you'reChris Jones and you've been the

(50:03):
guy fussing at George CarlLoftus and, you know, fussing at
all of these younger guys aboutthem needing to pick it up, you
absolutely can't be the personnot running to the ball, you
know, something that you'retrained to do from the smallest
stages of football, by the way.
Always run to the ball until youhear a whistle, right?
If you don't hear a whistle, youneed to begin to the ball.

(50:26):
And for a veteran who is wellrespected, and that I, you know,
I love Chris Jones as a playerand how he plays.
I didn't love him on uhyesterday because he was playing
against us.
Um, but a guy that you know weall have great respect for, but
a guy who um is just way betterthan that, right?
In terms of the technical partof the game and always running

(50:48):
to the ball and um, you know, basically, you know, going into
the whistle, you know, playinginto the whistle.
He had a brain lapse though, inthis case, and um he, you know,
I think he even called it aflute play.
But look, buddy, hey, that's onyou, you know.
You as the all-pro that you are,and how you're wired, and how
you've been fussing that yourother players to be wired in

(51:12):
some of the same ways thatyou're wired, you should have
been running to the ball in someway, shape, or form.
You know, maybe you lost trackof them, whatever the case may
be.
But that is a play that I wasshocked to see out of an all-pro
and a guy who has playedfootball at the high level that
he's played.
And you know, it couldn't havehappened at a better moment
because it gave Trevor Lawrencethe opportunity to pick himself

(51:33):
up, break a tackle or two, andget into the end zone and make
one of the biggest plays of hiscareer, and the rest is history.
So that is how Trevor Lawrenceended his birthday on the field,
and that's how his night went onthe field as he was able to rise
to the occasion of the nationalspotlight being on him and um

(51:55):
kind of answering the call likehe did at Clemson, right?
The spotlight was on him oftenat Clemson, you know, he gave a
lot of these doubters the showthat they were looking for, or
maybe not looking for, I guess,in some some cases.
He gave them the show that theywere looking for, and it wasn't
a perfect game.
You know, there are things thatdefinitely need to be cleaned

(52:16):
up, but the biggest thing isthat he showed them that, hey,
while I am a quarterback that'sgoing to make mistakes, I can
also get my team back in thegame and keep my team in the
game and put the team on my backin this case and get the job
done.
So couldn't be happier for him,and how that whole situation
ended for him on Monday nightfootball.

(52:39):
My second takeaway here, andagain, I kind of mentioned this
um as I was discussing theTrevor Lawrence situation of one
of the X factors of the gamethat kind of helped the Jaguars
win.
The Jaguars didn't have a lot ofpenalties.
It was four penalties, and I gotthem pulled up here.
Um, as we know, they came intothe game as the most penalized

(53:01):
team in the league, like upwardsof 35.
