going to fail.
Now, that voice, that innercritic.
It doesn't shout, it whispers.
It disguises itself as logic, caution and even realism.
But here's the truth If wedon't learn how to master that
(00:43):
voice, it will master us.
In today's episode, we're goingto talk about how to win the
battle over your inner critic.
We'll also explore how scienceand spirituality both agree that
your inner dialogue can eitherbe your prison or your
liberation.
So take a deep breath, keep anopen mind, because by the time
(01:05):
we're done, you'll know how toturn that inner critic into your
most powerful inner coach andfinally step into the life you
were meant to live.
So grab a pen and a pad and ifyou're ready, let's begin.
Hello and welcome to anotherempowering episode of
Transformative Living Radio.
(01:26):
I'm Andre Flax, your host andcertified life and leadership
coach.
I want you to imagine somethingfor a moment.
Imagine if every word you saidto yourself, every doubt, every
encouragement and everywhispered dream was written in
the sky above you right now.
What would you see?
(01:46):
Would you see hope, courage, clarity, or would there be
clouds of I'm not enough or Ishould have done better?
Or what if I fail?
In today's episode, I want totalk about how to win the battle
over your inner critic and howto harness the power of your
(02:07):
inner dialogue.
To begin, let's acknowledgethat we all have a voice in our
head.
Psychologists call it the innervoice.
Spiritually, some might call itthe narrator of your life.
It's this constant stream ofthought that gives meaning to
everything you experience.
It's this constant stream ofthought that gives meaning to
everything you experience.
Now, our inner critic oftenwears the disguise of just being
(02:29):
realistic.
It tells us it's only pointingout our flaws so we can do
better, but in truth, it canshrink our world.
Now here's the fascinating part.
Your inner voice evolved forsurvival.
Let me explain.
Your inner voice evolved forsurvival.
Let me explain.
Thousands of years ago, bybeing hyper-alert to danger, it
kept us alive.
(02:50):
But nowadays, instead ofscanning for saber-toothed
tigers, our inner voice scansfor mistakes in our emails, the
tone of someone's text or theway we stumble through a
presentation.
In the book entitled Chatter, ethan Cross describes the inner
voice as a kind of mental Swissarmy knife.
(03:12):
It helps you to remember things, plan your day, rehearse
conversations before they happenand even make sense of the
world.
Spiritually speaking, it's thebridge between your conscious
mind and the deeper layer ofyour being.
But here's the problem thatsame inner voice can turn on you
(03:32):
.
Instead of being your guide, itbecomes your judge, your jury
and your executioner.
That's what Cross calls chatterthe endless loop of negative
self-talk that not only makesyou feel bad but also hijacks
your ability to think clearly, make good decisions and stay
healthy.
(03:53):
You see, when chatter takesover, it's like having a toxic
coach in your head, someone whoyells at you from the sidelines
things like you're not enough, you're messing up, you'll never
get it right.
So why does that matter?
Well, it's not just aboutfeeling better.
Science shows that chatterliterally affects your
(04:15):
performance.
You see, it keeps your brainlocked into what is known as the
stress response, which floodsthe body with cortisol, which,
over time, impacts your immunesystem, your relationships and
even your physical health.
Spiritually, when you liveunder the rule of an inner
critic, you're cutting yourselfoff from your creative mind, the
(04:37):
part of you that is connectedto inspiration, intuition and
possibility.
You're no longer creating yourlife, you're just reacting to
fear.
So how do we reclaim controlover our inner voice to fear?
So how do we reclaim controlover our inner voice?
How do we move from chatter toclarity and from criticism to
(04:57):
counsel?
Well, ethan Cross offers somepowerful tools that, when weaved
with spiritual principles, theybecome life-changing.
So let's start with the firstone.
The first technique is calleddistant self-talk.
This is one of the simplest, most powerful things you can do
when you're caught in the loopof negative self-talk.
(05:18):
Now, instead of speaking toyourself in the first person,
for example, when you say thingslike I'm so stressed, I can't
handle this, I always mess up.
Switch to the second or thethird person.
I always mess up.
Switch to the second or thethird person.
Talk to yourself the way youwould talk to a dear friend, for
example, instead of saying Ican't believe I did that.
Try, for example, andre, you'vehandled harder things before.
(05:42):
You know what to do here.
Now why this works.
Well, science calls thispsychological distancing,
because it interrupts what isknown as Solomon's Paradox, the
fact that we often give betteradvice to others than we often
give to ourselves.
Spiritually, it's a reminderthat we're not entangled with
(06:02):
our thoughts.
We can step back, we canobserve and we can still choose.
Now, the second technique thatCross talks about in the book
Chatter is to seek wise counsel.
You see, not every conversationabout our struggles are created
equal.
Venting might feel good in themoment, but studies show that it
(06:23):
often fuels the fire of chatterinstead of calming it.
So what helps Talking tosomeone who listens with empathy
but also helps you to zoom outand see the big picture, someone
who reminds you of yourstrength, someone who says I see
what you're going through andhere's another way to look at it
Now, spiritually, this is whycommunity matters.
(06:47):
In the book of Proverbs it saysas iron sharpens iron, so one
person sharpens another.
You see, having the right voicein your ear can quiet the wrong
one in your head.
Now, the third technique thatCross describes in his book
called Chatter is to experienceawe.
Now, experiencing awe is likehitting the reset button on your
(07:10):
mental noise.
It's what happens to us when westand under a vast, starry sky,
or listen to a piece of musicthat's so moving that it takes
our breath away, or maybe it'swhen we are watching the waves
crash against the endless sea.
Cross found that when youexperience awe, it reduces
chatter because it shifts yourfocus away from yourself.
(07:32):
Your problems suddenly feelsmaller in the presence of
something vast and beautiful.
From a spiritual lens, awereconnects you to the divine,
the infinite intelligence andbeauty that's bigger than your
fears.
It's a reminder that life isnot just about your to-do list,
your worries or yourimperfections.
(07:53):
Life is about wonder.
I want you to imagine somethingnow.
I want you to picture yourinner critic as a character.
Maybe it's a stern teacher orsarcastic comedian, or maybe
even a worried parent.
See it clearly in your mind.
You got it Now.
(08:13):
I want you to see or imagineyou, the real you, the calm,
wise, centered.
You.
Step forward Now.
Speak to that critic withkindness but authority.
You might want to say somethinglike hey, thank you for your
concern.
I know you're trying to protectme, but I am capable, I am safe
(08:35):
and I am guided.
You see, it's not aboutsilencing your inner voice.
It's about retraining it,turning it from a critic to a
coach, from chatter to clarity.
Now, as we wrap up this episode, here's my invitation to you
the next time your inner criticpipes up, pause, step back and
(08:59):
speak to yourself like a trustedfriend, seek wise counsel when
the noise is too loud, and thenfind something to fill you with
awe.
Because when you master yourinner dialogue, you don't just
quiet the noise, you awaken thetruth of your power.
You start living from a placewithin you that is unshakable,
(09:21):
unbreakable and unstoppable.
You see, your mind will alwayshave something to say, but you,
you get to choose which voiceyou listen to, and when you
choose the voice of wisdom, compassion and possibility,
that's when your life begins toexpand in ways you never dreamed
of.
Remember, you are not yourchatter, you are the
(09:45):
consciousness that commands it.
