Speaker 1 (00:00):
Have you ever found
the perfect award flight for
your family?
But it leaves from a differentcity.
That's where positioningflights come in, and with a big
family it's a whole differentballgame.
Listen in for some logisticaltips and ways to save big on
your next positioning flight.
Hi, I'm Raya and I'm Dwayne andwe are your hosts of the Travel
(00:33):
Party of Five podcast, where weshare how we travel as a family
of five around the world.
We will also share how we usepoints and miles to travel as
affordably as possible andsometimes even completely free.
So if you're wanting to travelmore with your family but you're
not sure how, we'd love for youto listen in.
So welcome to our podcast, where we hope you learn a thing
(00:53):
or two to get you closer to yournext trip.
Hi, friends, how are you?
(01:15):
Welcome back to Travel Party ofFive podcast.
I'm so happy that you're here.
Thank you so much for listeningtoday.
My name is Rhea.
I am your host.
I am solo again today.
We are just in a very busyseason of life, but I do think
Duane will be back on nextweek's episode.
So today we are talking allthings positioning flights.
I wanted to do this episodebecause I just booked us a
(01:35):
another set of positioningflights for our spring break
trip for 2026.
And I got to thinking you know, this is like the third time
that we're going to do this in ayear and I've learned a ton
about like kind of the best timeto book and how to book them
for where we live specifically.
But I think I have some goodtips, no matter where you live
(01:58):
in the country, for how you canfind maybe the best airports for
you to position to, and thensome tips on how you can get
flights you know you to positionto, and then some tips on how
you can get flights you know foryour family without spending
1000s of dollars.
So let's jump in Number one.
What is a positioning flight?
So, if you're brand new topoints and miles, a positioning
flight is essentially a flightthat you will take like a long
(02:20):
haul flight that you will takelike a long haul flight that you
will take that leaves from adifferent airport than the one
closest to your house.
So, for example, you knowbooking an award flight from JFK
when you live in Denver orDallas or whatever.
And there's kind of two mainreasons, I think, why someone
(02:43):
would do this and, as a sidenote, these flights are fairly
common in the points and milestravel ecosystem, but I think
when you have a big family theybecome more difficult and
sometimes cost prohibitive tomake this work.
(03:03):
But here are the main tworeasons that I think in my
experience someone would book apositioning flight.
So number one would obviouslybe to get better or cheaper
award availability than what'savailable at your home airport.
Especially if you live in asmaller airport, there's either
going to be limited options forpoints flights out of that
(03:27):
airport if it's again a smallerairport, or the points cost is
going to be very high, whereasif you fly to a bigger airport,
then that you know that has moreinternational flights, there's
a greater supply of these pointsflights, which means you can
typically find them for cheaperpoints cost.
(03:47):
So that's the first reason isto find either better award
availability or cheaper awardavailability on points.
The other option is to findbetter flight times.
So sometimes again, especiallyif you are living near a smaller
airport, the flight times thatwill leave out of your home
airport are maybe they're ared-eye flight and you don't
(04:10):
want that, or you know theconnecting options that you have
are just not good.
So those are, I think, the twomain reasons.
So, number one, obviously, define better award availability
.
And number two, better flighttimes that are more convenient
for you and your situation.
Now, booking for a family offive is much trickier, right,
(04:34):
because maybe it's okay, it's$150 for me to fly from Phoenix
to LA.
Okay, lax is a hugeinternational airport.
They have a ton of flights inand out every day, obviously,
but, more importantly, a ton ofpoints and miles availability.
And $150 is no big deal ifthere's just one of you, but
(04:56):
when you have a family of fiveor even more, you know, for a
family of five that's $750.
That is a lot of money, in myopinion, and kind of defeats the
purpose a little bit of usingpoints, right, because we're
using points here to save moneyand so we don't want to spend a
ton of money just to get to anairport to take a points flight,
(05:17):
right?
So here's a few tips that I'velearned and I'm going to share
my most recent example offlights that I booked.
So for spring break 2026, we aregoing to go to Thailand, and
when I was looking at this was alast minute.
Well, sorry, a fully aware thatbooking a year out is nowhere
(05:40):
near a last minute decision.
However, if you've beenlistening for a while, you've
probably heard me talk about howour spring break 2026 trip was
going to be Belize, and that wasthe plan for a long time.
I planned almost the entiretrip.
I had lodging booked.
The only thing I did not havebooked was our flights, and that
(06:01):
was because we were planning tofly Southwest and we were
planning to use companion passes, which we don't have yet.
So at the end of 2025, we wereplanning to start the companion
pass process and we very wellmay still do that.
But, number one, southwest hasrolled out a lot of changes and
the points costs have gone upconsiderably.
(06:23):
And the points costs have goneup considerably, and a big
reason that I chose Belize isbecause I was having to choose
from places that Southwest fliesinto and you know that's a
fairly limited set of optionswhen you compare it to a regular
international airline.
So we were going to go toBelize.
(06:44):
I was not super excited aboutit, but I still thought it would
be fun and memorable andenjoyable for our family.
However, with all the changesSouthwest has come out with some
of which are not bad, I mightadd I was hesitant to kind of
put all our eggs in one basketand have this trip fully planned
(07:05):
.
That where I wasn't sure numberone, if the companion pass, was
even still going to be a thingand you know, it does seem like
it will be but I also wasn'tsure what the points cost would
be.
Southwest does not have theircalendar released out that far,
and it just felt like I wasforcing a trip that I was not
(07:25):
super excited about.
And the lodging was veryexpensive.
Like we wanted to stay in somenice places because spoiler
alert we're used to nice placesnow because we typically use
points for nice hotels.
So the lodging was going tocost like almost $4,000.
And that just I mean that's aton of money, like a ton.
(07:47):
And so I just thought, you knowwhat, like where else can we go
that I feel super excited aboutand that you know we're March,
which is when our spring breakis, is a good time to visit, and
Thailand is very high on mylist.
And so I did a quick little bitof research, found a few super
helpful blogs and was like youknow what this is?
I feel so much more excitedabout this trip and so we are
(08:10):
going to go to Thailand.
It's not fully booked yet, soprobably when I do fully book it
I'll do a whole episode.
But we are going to.
I do have our flights therebooked and I have our hotels
booked.
The only thing that's notbooked is flights back, and we
are going to fly there out ofSan Francisco, I.
(08:30):
So I'm going to walk youthrough my process and then how
I booked the positioning flightfrom Phoenix to San Francisco,
and to bring this back to ourmain topic, which again is
positioning flights.
The process that I went throughfor this is exactly the process
that I would recommend foranyone who is trying to find,
(08:50):
you know, award flights fortheir family and maybe isn't
having a ton of luck out oftheir home airport.
So I always start on Googleflights, number one.
I go onto Google flights and Itype in first.
I start with my home airportand I type in the destination
airport.
I do a search and then I lookto see if there's any nonstop
flights.
That's step one.
(09:11):
So you have to do the searchand then filter the search
results by nonstop flights, eventhough and I feel like a broken
record because I feel like Isay this so much but even though
Phoenix is an internationalairport and is a fairly big
airport.
So much.
But even though Phoenix is aninternational airport and is a
fairly big airport, we do nothave a lot of good direct
nonstop flights.
So if that, if you are in thesame boat and there are no
(09:34):
nonstop flights to Thailandbecause there are none from
Phoenix, I've, I've checked.
The next step is going to be tothink about the airports that
are near you.
Right, and when I say near, Imean like within a one to two
hour flight.
Ideally, is what I think makesa decent positioning flight
(09:55):
without being too overwhelming.
If that's not, you know, ifthat timeframe is a little
different for you, that's fineFor us.
That's kind of what I'mthinking.
So that gives me airports likeDallas, so DFW, denver maybe, um
, lax, san Francisco, maybe SanDiego, um, and then like maybe
(10:19):
Seattle, but Seattle is a littlebit far, um, those are the ones
that I typically look at.
And then so if we're going toEurope, I would probably start
looking at DFW or Denver orChicago.
Chicago is another one, that'sactually where we positioned to
fly to Paris, and Chicago isprobably the farthest I would go
(10:40):
.
That's a three hour flight fromPhoenix.
But the reason I'm looking atthose airports are those are
airports on the way to Europe, right?
So, like we're going east andthose are east, I probably
wouldn't fly to LAX, which iswest, and only to then fly east,
because that just gives me alonger, long haul flight.
(11:01):
I mean, I might if it wasbusiness class, but generally I
won't.
And then for Thailand, for usit's the opposite, right, we're
flying west, and so I'm going tolook at San Diego, lax, sfo
those are probably the threemain ones that I'm going to
start with, and then I'm goingto start searching from those
airports.
(11:21):
So I'll do, for example, lax toThailand or SFO to Thailand,
and then I'll look and see, okay, what are the nonstop flights
and there will be nonstopflights from those and then I
look at, okay, what are thecarriers and what is the cost?
Um, one thing that I also liketo use is the points path
(11:42):
extension.
Um, this is a free extensionyou can install on Chrome and it
will then show you when you doyour search on Google Flights.
It will show you if there'spoints availability and, if so,
what it is kind of next to thecash price, or if there is no
good points.
(12:02):
Availability it will say usecash, and so for Thailand, we
actually did pay cash for ourflights there.
I'm attempting to use pointsfor the way back but have again
don't have the points I need andtherefore have not booked yet.
So TBD on that part, on thatpiece.
But using the Google flightsplus the points path helps give
(12:26):
me a rough idea of okay, like.
These are the carriers that flydirect flights from this
airport to the airport I want togo to, and from there I will do
two things.
So I will go to seatsarrow andI will do a search there.
You can also do this, checkingyour home airport to the airport
(12:47):
you want to go to.
The only problem with seatsaerois if you're using the free
version.
I think you can only search twomonths out, and so I do the
paid version for that, becauseI'm searching for award flights
constantly and so I do pay forthat.
If you have the free version, Imean yes, if you have the free
version, I would just stick withthe Google flights option and
(13:10):
then, whatever airports flydirect, then I would go to their
individual websites, like, forexample, american Airlines, and
then I would do the search and Iwould see what the points cost
is looking like.
Or Singapore Airlines isanother one.
I would do the point search andI would, you know, see what
kind of points we're looking athere.
For for me it's for five people, right.
(13:33):
And from there I'm going tostart to just formulate in my
mind, okay, like this isprobably the flight that I'm
going to take, because I havethese points that I can transfer
to this airline and book it andI have enough points and
whatever.
Fine, perfect, okay.
Once I have the date that Ithink we're going to fly, before
(13:57):
I book the flight I need tofigure out what my positioning
costs is going to be.
So if we're going to fly on,I'm going to make up a date
Saturday March 8th.
I don't think that's actually aright date, but it doesn't
matter.
If we're going to fly onSaturday March 8th, singapore
Airlines has a flight that I canbook.
(14:20):
There's availability on points.
I need to look for March 7th,probably for the positioning
flight.
7th, probably for thepositioning flight.
If your flight leaves super latein the day, like maybe 6, 7, 8
pm, then you could fly over inthe morning, but you want to
leave at least, I would say, sixhours between the time your
(14:41):
positioning flight arrives andthe time that your long haul
points flight leaves the airport, and I am too nervous to do
that.
So we typically will fly overthe day before, we'll stay the
night in an airport hotel andthen we'll, you know, fly out on
our flight the next day.
(15:01):
When there's five people, itjust increases the chances of
something going wrong Maybesomeone's bag getting lost,
maybe you know the flight beingdelayed or canceled.
And if the flight gets delayedor canceled it's going to be
much harder for me to findanother flight when I have to
find five seats on that flightversus if it were just me.
(15:24):
It's easier, right, one seatmuch easier to find than five,
you know, day of.
So typically I would recommendfor bigger groups flying over
the day before using the freenight hotel certificates that
come with some of your hotelcards, like the Hyatt card comes
with a free night every year, the IHG premier card comes with
(15:47):
a free night every year.
There's, you know, a bunch ofMarriott cards come with free
nights, and using those nightsfor a positioning flight, like
staying in a hotel the nightbefore your long haul flight,
that can be a really great useof those certificates and that
is you know what I, that's whatwe did when we flew to Paris,
(16:08):
and I think we're using pointswhen we stay.
Uh, we're positioning to SanFrancisco when we fly to Japan
and I'm pretty sure I bookedthat hotel using points.
But because it's a categoryfive and it's a Hyatt and the
Hyatt free night certificate isonly category one through four,
(16:29):
but again a Marriott card woulddo the trick as well.
They have a lot, of, a lot ofcheaper airport hotel options
for points.
So that's what I wouldrecommend for staying overnight
and how to kind of do that onthe cheap.
And then booking early is goingto be one of the best ways to
(16:51):
make sure that you are notspending a ton of money or
points on the positioningflights.
So let me get into kind of a fewtips for how I would book these
for cheap.
Number one I would use points, and some of the best ways to use
not a ton of points is going tobe to use Alaska Air and book
(17:15):
their flights using miles.
You can book short hauldomestic flights on Alaska for
as cheap as 4,500 miles perperson, so I can fly my entire
family of five for 22,500 Alaskamiles one way from, let's say,
phoenix to San Francisco.
That's the positioning flightthat I just booked for Thailand,
(17:38):
and it costs 22,500 miles plusaround $90 total in taxes and
fees.
The cash price would have been,I think, between seven and $800
total for all five of us.
So that is a great value.
That's close to three, threecents per point, I think, if not
(17:59):
a little higher, and so superhappy with that.
But one thing I've noticed isthat you have to get these
Alaska fares.
They're called saver fares.
That's like the cheap ones, because they only have a certain
amount per day that's availableand it's not on every flight
either.
So you're going to be a littlelimited in when you can fly over
(18:23):
.
And so that's the one thingthat I've noticed is, the
earlier you book, the morelikely you are to find those
cheaper saver fares.
So, again for March 2026, I havealready booked our positioning
flight from Phoenix to SanFrancisco, and it is well.
When I booked it it was April2025.
(18:45):
So a full 11 months in advance.
I'm booking the positioningflight because I number one, I'm
not going to fly over more thana day early, right, like no way
.
That doesn't make any sense andthere was only one flight left
that had the saver availabilityand there were six seats and I
(19:05):
booked five of them.
So booking early is my numberone tip, especially if you're
using Alaska to save points.
You can also find cheaper pointsflights using American, but
they're not going to be as cheapas Alaska, and so I would
always start with Alaska.
Um, even if you think Alaskaairlines doesn't operate near me
(19:25):
, um, you're, you're bookingAmerican Airlines flights using
Alaska miles, so I would checkit anyways.
And again, short haul flights4,500 points a person.
For us, seattle is notconsidered a short haul flight,
so I think the Seattle pointswere from Phoenix, were maybe
(19:46):
7,500 points a person or 10,000points a person they were more.
And so I kind of realized okay, san Francisco is like the
farthest of the three Californiaairports that we could fly to
for the 4,500 miles per person.
The only way for you to figureout what that is from your
airport is just by doingsearches, and it doesn't take
(20:09):
that long.
You could probably find thatout in 10 minutes or less.
So tip number two for savingmoney on positioning flights if
you don't want to use points, can't use points.
Whatever it may be, I would saydon't skip over the budget.
Airlines, right, thespiritsirits, the Frontiers, the
Jet Blues of the world, evenSouthwest sometimes runs really
(20:31):
cheap fare sales from you know, like domestically, and so check
all of those.
And when you're doing likeFrontier or Spirit, just factor
in the cost of your bag, becauseyou're going to have to pay to
bring your bag on board, you'regoing to have to pay to bring
your, your personal item, yourbackpack, whatever.
(20:51):
So make sure you're factoringthat in.
And again, try to find a directflight, because if there's a
direct flight there's just muchless chance for things to go
wrong, things to be delayed, andagain, you shouldn't be flying
very far, so it should be rathereasy to find a direct flight.
You can also set up GoogleFlight alerts and Google Flights
(21:17):
will tell you if the pricing ofyou know the route is normal or
high or low, and so that'llgive you a rough idea to have,
like what you can expect ifyou're not wanting to use points
.
So again, you can set up analert so it'll alert you if the
price drops.
You can check like mistake faresif you are a member of thrifty
traveler or going I think it'scalled, which used to be Scott's
(21:39):
cheap flights.
You know you can watch those aswell.
And then, obviously, if youhave one or two Southwest
companion passes, this is afantastic way to utilize those,
because you essentially onlyneed to book three flights and
then, if you have two passes, you can get the other two
flights for just the taxes.
So, obviously, if you havethose, this is a fantastic way
(22:01):
to utilize them, and if we doend up getting our companion
passes again at the beginning ofnext year, that's likely
something that we will utilizethem for throughout the year as
well.
And then, if you are going tofly a budget airline like a
Spirit or a Frontier, if theyhave an office in your city,
like an office in the airport, you can often go to the ticket
(22:25):
counter in person and buyflights and then you save I
forget what it's called, but yousave paying some of the taxes,
essentially.
And so, again, when you'repaying for five or six people,
that money can really add up.
And so check that out.
But just be careful, because myunderstanding is it's generally
a very limited window of timemaybe like one day a week, for
(22:49):
example, like maybe Sundays fromtwo to four that you can go and
do this in person.
So look on their website, maybetry to search Reddit threads
for your specific airport andsee if that's even an option.
It is an option here in Phoenix, but I've never personally done
it because I hate thoseairlines.
However, they are cheap and soit can definitely be a money
(23:11):
saver and I think I would do itif I were going to try to fly
them.
So if you are going to bepaying cash instead of using
points, you just want to makesure you're maximizing the
amount of points that you canearn on a purchase.
So if you are booking directwith an airline, I think the
Amex Platinum, amex Biz Platinumfor sure earns 5x on flights
(23:33):
booked directly with an airline.
If you don't have that but youhave a Chase Sapphire card,
chase Sapphire should earn 3x ontravel and then also check,
like Rakuten, and see if there'sany offers for cash back you
know worth booking with aspecific airline, or check
Capital One, and then you canalso check if you're going to
(23:54):
use a chase card.
Check your chase cards for likemoney back every once in a
while.
That'll happen.
The reason I mentioned this iswhen I booked our Thailand
flights.
Part of the reason I decided topay cash one was.
It was fairly cheap, like itwas around $500 a person one way
to fly again from San Franciscoall the way to Phuket, thailand
(24:17):
.
So that's incredibly cheap.
But there was also a Amex anoffer on the AMX business
platinum to spend $2,500 onairfare and get a $250 statement
credit.
I feel like that is not supercommon, but it happened to come
around at the time when I waslooking at these flights anyways
(24:38):
, and so I earned 5x on my spendbecause I used my AMX business
platinum and then I also earneda $250 statement credit.
So if you are going to bepaying cash for the positioning
flights, just make sure thatyou're maximizing the amount of
points that you're going to earnon that transaction.
(24:59):
And then I think my last twotips are going to be first of
all, make sure that if you'regoing to fly in on the same day
that your long haul flightleaves, make sure that you're
flying into the same airportthat you're going to fly out of.
If you're flying in the nightbefore and leaving the airport
to stay in a hotel, it doesn'tmatter as much.
(25:20):
For example, when we flew toParis, we flew into Chicago
Midway and flew out of ChicagoO'Hare, but we were staying in
the city so it didn't reallymatter for us.
But if you are, for example, flying over in the morning to
Newark Airport and then yourflight at the end of the day
leaves out of JFK, you just haveto factor in the time and the
(25:45):
cost and the stress of gettingfrom Newark to JFK and I just
feel like the more like hoopsyou have to jump through, the
more opportunity you have forthings to go awry, and I would
just hate for you to miss yourlong haul flight that you are
clearly working so hard to geton.
So try to fly into and out ofthe same airport whenever
(26:07):
possible.
Plus, if you've got kids, youknow that limits the car seat
kind of logistical thing.
Um, as a side note, let me justum, let me just promote the
ride safer vest, though reallyquickly.
That was a game changer for uswhen we went to Europe.
I will link it in the shownotes.
Um, it's not super cheap.
(26:29):
I think it was between two andthree hundred dollars on Amazon,
but it came in so helpful forus and basically opened up a
whole nother world oftransportation, like taxis, that
we wouldn't have been able totake otherwise because we're not
lugging a huge car seat allaround Europe.
So if you do need somethinglogistically like that for kids,
(26:51):
look into that.
And then my other last tip ismake sure that you're checking
the weather forecast for boththe city that you live in as
well as the city that you arepositioning to, because if there
is a storm coming and there's achance that you might not be
able to get out of your airportor into the current airport, you
(27:15):
may want to either move yourpositioning flight up and try to
get there early so that youknow, especially if the storm is
where you live right and youneed to get out before they
close the airports.
You know, especially if thestorm is where you live right
and you need to get out beforethey close the airports.
You know, I would just payclose attention to the weather
the few days leading up to yourflight so that you can pivot if
needed, because you know yourairport may be closed.
(27:37):
But the the airport you'repositioning to may be just fine,
and obviously in that scenarioyou would miss your flight and
nobody wants that.
So keep an eye on the weatherSuper important, just fine, and
obviously in that scenario youwould miss your flight and
nobody wants that.
So keep an eye on the weatherSuper important, okay, so let's
quickly recap.
We have talked about whatpositioning flights are and why
someone would want to use them, why families need to approach
them differently and how to savesome money on those flights,
(28:00):
especially for a big family.
Um, so I think reminders areplan ahead, book early, use
points if you can, and neverassume that everything will work
seamlessly.
Always be prepared with a planB.
Check the weather.
So you may be listening to allthis and thinking is it worth
(28:21):
booking two separate ticketsjust to use like a points
redemption?
I think that the only personthat can answer that is you.
For us, yes, it is, when I.
So let me go back to my Thailandexample, when I was looking at
flights from Phoenix direct toPhuket, the.
So there were flight options, but the points options were not
(28:44):
good and the cash options weremuch, not much, but they were
like over $3,000 total for allfive of us, like closer to maybe
3,200, I think, which, again,that's not terrible.
That's a little over whatthat's like?
650 a person or something.
But the flight times were notideal.
(29:05):
Some of them had like a 24 hourlayover in South Korea and then
we would have to get on anotherovernight, like a second
overnight flight.
That was like seven hours toget to Phuket and the times just
were not ideal for a familywith younger kids.
We would have essentially beenon a plane for two overnights
(29:27):
versus just one, and so the costwas one factor in me booking
out of San Francisco instead ofPhoenix, but the other factor
was the flight times, and I wasable to get us a flight direct
from San Francisco to Singaporeand then we will stay overnight
in Singapore.
(29:48):
I think our layover is like 10or 11 hours, so we will get a
hotel directly in the Singaporeairport, we will not have to
leave, and then our flightleaves early in the morning for
Thailand and it's only a twohour flight.
So I am thinking about what it'sgoing to feel like in the
moment, and I know myself and myfamily well enough to know that
(30:10):
we're not going to want to beon like a 12 hour flight and
then have a whole day to exploreanother country which I love
that part, but with kids it justdoesn't, it doesn't work and
then have to get on anotherovernight flight, right?
So sleep on a plane twice.
That sounds terrible to me as aparent.
So as if I were going solo.
(30:32):
I would 100% do that, becausethen I would get a whole day in
South Korea, which sounds great.
But with kids we were like wejust want to take the super long
flight, we want to get as closeas we can.
Then we'll hang out in theSingapore airport, which is one
of the best airports in theworld as a side note.
We'll get a hotel and then wewill continue on to Thailand in
(30:53):
the morning.
A two hour flight is a mucheasier sell to three kids than a
seven hour flight.
So that's kind of how I'mthinking of it and how I'm
deciding.
Every one is different and everyfamily is different.
So you know, you may feelcompletely differently about it,
and that's fine.
Do what works best for you.
But the flight times justhappened to be way better out of
(31:16):
San Francisco and it wascheaper and I could get a good
positioning flight.
So all of those things added upto we are going to position for
the third time flight.
So all of those things added upto we are going to position for
the third time.
And I really wanted to do thisepisode because I think if
you're open to positioning, itcan open up a whole nother world
of points and can oftentimessave you a lot of points as well
(31:37):
, or cash if you're booking cash.
So that is all I have for today.
