This week’s episode of Trivia Tangents is a bit different. Since it falls on September 11th, I wanted to pause our usual trivia format to honor and remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the attacks of 2001. In this brief tribute, I reflect on the four hijacked flights, the courage shown by passengers and first responders, and the lasting impact of that day.

We will never forget.

(00:00):
Hi everyone, this is your host Lena, and welcome to Trivia
Tangents. Normally this is a fun trivia
show, but today's episode will be different because this week's
episode falls on September 11th.I wanted to pause our usual
format and take a few minutes toremember and honor the lives
lost on this day in 2001. On the morning of September

(00:24):
11th, 2001, four passenger flights were hijacked in
coordinated terrorist attacks. Nearly 3000 people lost their
lives that day on the planes in the World Trade Center towers at
the Pentagon, and in the aftermath of the attacks,
thousands more were injured and countless families and

(00:44):
communities were changed forever.
American Airlines Flight 11 tookoff from Boston bound for Los
Angeles. It was the first plane to be
hijacked and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade
Center. This flight carried 76
passengers and 11 crew members, all of whom died.
Included in the passengers were David Angle and Lynn Angle.

(01:09):
David Angle, 54, Pasadena, CA was the creator and executive
producer of the hit NBC sitcom Fraser.
He was travelling with his wife and they were returning from a
wedding on the East Coast to attend the Emmy Awards in Los
Angeles. United Airlines Flight 175, also

(01:29):
leaving Boston for Los Angeles, was hijacked shortly after and
crashed into the South Tower. This flight had 9 crew members
and 51 passengers, all who died. This flight included the
youngest victim of the 9/11 attacks, 3 year old Christine
Hanson. American Airlines Flight 77 left

(01:49):
Washington, DC headed for Los Angeles.
It was hijacked and crashed intothe Pentagon. 64 victims on
board the aircraft, six of whom were part of the crew. 125
victims at the Pentagon. One of the passengers, Marie Ray
Sauper, Santa Barbara, CA, was awoman's gymnastics coach at the

(02:14):
University of California, Santa Barbara.
She had just gotten the post on August 31st and was making the
trip to California to start her work.
United Airlines Flight 93 departed from Newark bound for
San Francisco. When passengers learned what was
happening, they fought back against the hijackers.
The plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, PA, preventing it

(02:38):
from reaching the hijackers. Intended target of Washington,
DC. There were 33 victims, of whom
were 26 passengers and seven crew members.
Mark Bingham was a 31 year old from San Francisco, owner of the
Bingham Group. He was able to call his mother
on the plane 15 minutes before they crashed and he was able to

(03:01):
tell her, I love you very, very much.
Christina Snyder was 32 years old and was on her way home to
Kailua, HI from a work conference in the East Coast.
She had been married less than ayear.
Each of these flights carried ordinary people, parents,

(03:22):
children, coworkers, friends. On what should have been a
normal day on Flight 93, passengers like Todd Beamer and
others worked together to stop further tragedy, sacrificing
their own lives in the process. At the World Trade Center and at
the Pentagon, first responders ran towards danger to save

(03:45):
others. Their bravery and sacrifice will
never be forgotten. I'd like to invite you to join
me in a short moment of silence to remember the nearly 3000
people who died that day, as well as their families and loved
ones who still carry the weight of their loss.

(04:21):
Thank you for taking this momentwith me to honor their memory.
Next week we will return to our usual trivia format, but I felt
it was important today to use this episode to reflect and
remember. We will never forget.
